Adam Lambert in His Own Words: Sexuality, Kris Allen, Life After Idol

When American Idol ended and Adam Lambert was surrounded by a crush of reporters asking the “question dangling over his head,” he was tempted to speak out about his sexuality, but he held back. “I almost started talking about it to the reporters, but I thought, ‘I’m going to wait for Rolling Stone, that will be cooler,’ ” Lambert says. His incredible coming-out story is the new cover of Rolling Stone, on newsstands today (check out exclusive video of his cover shoot).

Here’s more from Vanessa Grigoriadis’ conversation with Lambert — Adam, in his own words, discussing his relationships with fellow Idols Kris Allen and Allison Iraheta, his plans for his music career and why he refuses to hide his sexuality. “Private lives don’t exist anymore for celebrities: they just don’t,” he tells us. “I don’t want to be looking over my shoulder all the time, thinking I have to hide … going down the red carpet with some chick who is posing as my girlfriend. That’s not cool, that’s not being a rock star. I can’t do that.”

“Wild Idol: The Psychedelic Transformation and Sexual Liberation of Adam Lambert” is on newsstands now.

Adam Lambert is the most gayest weirdo besides Barack Obama

Def Leppard Fan4Life | 6/10/2009, 9:37 am EST

Now I will have the job of searching every bookstore here for this issue! RS, where is your outlet here in Barbados?

DS | 6/10/2009, 10:19 am EST

loser

Linda | 6/10/2009, 12:56 pm EST

I’m going crazy cuz I can’t find this issue of RS anywhere here in Sweden!!! Srsly, I need at least 3 copies! Adam is awesome!

Miranda | 6/10/2009, 1:01 pm EST

I really like what Adam said about life after American Idol, he was being so realistic about it. He knows that it could go either way, he could be great or he could fail. I’m glad he knows that and doesn’t think it will just come easy. It makes me feel reassured in some way. Because Idol has never had anyone like Lambert it’s gonna be really interesting to hear how his music will sound.

I, for one, can’t wait for it! Thank you Rolling Stone for this beyond Amazing interview with Adam. I srsly can’t thank you enough. He got to say what he wanted in his own words and you did a wonderful article with beautiful pictures. Thank you.

And to all the haters out there, if you really hate Adam then why waste time complaining about him? If you have nothing positive to say, don’t say anything.

Mary | 6/10/2009, 5:09 pm EST

I am a 58 year old married woman and grandmother. I absolutely love Adam Lambert. I think he is destined to be great. He is an awesome talent and I for one will totally buy his music. I could care less whether he is gay or not. It certainly has nothing to do with his talent. Besides that, gay or not, I could look at those baby blues all day long. :-) His sexual preference is and should be his own personal business. All that should really concern anyone is that he is a decent human being, which from what I’ve seen – he is. I am a huge Adam Lambert fan!

Jeff | 6/10/2009, 5:53 pm EST

Attention Folks:

Adam Lambert is currently no more and no less than a very decent KARAOKE SINGER.

Can we please move along from this until he WRITES something worth paying attention to?

Because if we keep giving this much credence to KARAOKE SINGERS, we are never going to discover the next Kurt Cobain or next Billie Joe.

Never Off-Topic | 6/10/2009, 6:21 pm EST

With the amount of attention this guy is getting on this website, it is understandable why RS would do a cover story on him. It is also a real shame what popular music has become!

Yerf | 6/10/2009, 6:48 pm EST

@ Anonymous Reality.

Sounds like you just figured out how to get past the internet filter that your parents activated you to PREVENT you from getting on sites like these.

Get a life, kid.

mi | 6/10/2009, 7:19 pm EST

Zena | 6/10/2009, 9:01 pm EST

Hopefully now Adam can get on with his career as a SINGER…….are you all finished yet with the questions? Good!! Now let’s here some ass kickin’ music and vocals dude!! Hope all your tunes are not electric, I like the sound of real instruments with your voice, espec rock and blues . The Idol musicians were outstanding, Glad Adam gave them credit where due!!Love your vocal range and twists! Stay a nice person, and keep smiling, you have great teeth!! Hope you play in my area NE PA.

SantaBarbaraGranny | 6/10/2009, 9:15 pm EST

Attention Jeff, DS and anonymous reality:

Why in the MAD World would you come here & post your stupid, ugly hateful comments???????
Geez, I would never dream of doing that on a STARS thread…. if I didn’t like them.
PLEASE show some CLASS…your Mom & Granny would be ashamed!

I am buying 10 copies | 6/10/2009, 10:26 pm EST

This is a collector’s item! LOVE beautiful Adam!

Rachel | 6/10/2009, 10:42 pm EST

Adam,I Love your amazing voice, your personality, and your courage.Someday, people will finally recognize that we all came from the same place, that we ALL were here from the beginning, and always will be, that we are no different from each other. BUT, Adam darlin, you are different! You are the most talented, mesmerizing, entertainer I have seen in many years, and I have seen a lot of them. I was a highschool girl in the 1960’s. I listen to your songs from “Idol” every day. I am addicted to you and am going through witdrawal now that you are no longer on TV. Did I mention that you are “One Hell Of an Entertainer”. You need to make lots of videos where we can see you. I am looking forward to your album and wish that I tunes would offer more of your music and videos we can buy them. I admire and respect you and would be proud to call you my Grandson.

Raine Ann | 6/10/2009, 10:51 pm EST

Thank you Rolling Stone for recognizing Adam as the Talented and Uniquely Divine person that he is and ADAM–HURRY UP WITH THAT NEW ALBUM–MA MA NEEDS NEW INPUT!!!!

Beyond_The_Sky | 6/10/2009, 11:24 pm EST

Adam is the second-coming of Elvis. Now I wasn’t able to be there the first time around (much to my constant dismay), but I’m not missing it this time.

Tina | 6/11/2009, 1:51 am EST

I am sick to death of all the negative comments made against Adam! Give the poor guy a chance to release his album and show what he’d made of!

He is an amazing talent, and if he needed AI to get his name across to the world and become recognised, then good on him for taking that risk! Because that’s exactly what he’s done – can you say the same?? He’s braver than any of you losers who can only critisize his talent, his religion and his sexuality! Grow up!

Adam has taken the WORLD by storm and yes not just America! People from all over the world are waiting with baited breath for his album to come out! And that includes me, in New Zealand…

Adam – you are amazing, incredibly talented and we all believe you have an awesome future ahead of you!

Good luck and hurry up with the album – I for one am definitely going to buy it!

Zara | 6/11/2009, 9:39 am EST

Adam is beautiful and super talented! I love that he’s gay and I’m even more in love with him since he came out proudly! He doesn’t care what people say – he just wants to be himself. I cannot wait for his album and the magazine!

DSevere | 6/12/2009, 12:38 am EST

Loved the article (his dad was a Deadhead, that explains a lot… ;) I was never a big AI fan, but I love Adam Lambert, listen to his collection of songs from AI every day. He is so talented, and so cool and real!

Fire | 6/12/2009, 12:51 am EST

Damn, has the dude ever heard of chapstick? And he’s gay, he should be the last person on earth to have dry, cracked lips. Cause they know all the beauty maintenance stuff.

anonymous | 6/12/2009, 12:56 am EST

I guess freedom of speech allows all people to speak their minds. Adam Lambert is an exceptionally talented, incredibly authentic young man who is seeking a place for his gift in the world. I pray he finds it and remains humble and true to himself. LOVE his voice. Barack Obama is beyond amazing….two gifts from the Lord himself. So sorry if people can’t see that.

Lulu | 6/12/2009, 1:03 am EST

Rolling Stone is nowhere to be found within a 20 mile radius of my house……

Carla | 6/12/2009, 3:23 am EST

Got my copy today- last one in the store! Y’all gotta go and get a copy, the pix are worth a frame. Love the article, Adam is the real deal. Screw American Idol, it’s a stupid show. Adam made the show his bitch and now he’s kicking it to the curb. He’s upgrading. Can’t wait for his album and solo tour.

Delilah | 6/12/2009, 5:55 am EST

How rare and refreshing to hear that someone actually “owns themselves” in this day and age. If we all had half his “guts” the world would be a better place. Kudos to RS for the best cover I have ever seen bar none, and an honestly frank and well written article to go with it. RS you are on my “to buy” list from now on. I appreciate and respect your professional treatment of a delicate and controversial subject.

KD Steele | 6/12/2009, 6:05 am EST

So proud of you Adam!

espy fortin | 6/12/2009, 7:58 am EST

Love Adam…..

Betty | 6/12/2009, 9:24 am EST

I am a 80 year old grandmother and I love Adam Lambert voice I couldn’t wait each week to hear
him sing . I KNOW he is going to the top with his beautiful voice and I will be buying his cd’s. I wish him the best.

Laura | 6/12/2009, 10:46 am EST

Adam is the coolest gay, I wish all the gays were like him!!!! And overall – Gay or no gay, what’s the difference??? He is the best, amazing, addictive…love him no matter what!!! End of story.

Adamisforreal | 6/12/2009, 10:53 am EST

I might need to purchase two copies of RS – one for rubbing on my crotch and the other to read!

Brooklynns Mom | 6/12/2009, 12:05 pm EST

I normally only read these posts & never make my own comments but feel I have to this time….To the people who feel the need to post negative things about Adam (or any other star for that matter) WHY are you even on here reading about them if you don’t like them? Save the breath of fresh air that he is for the people who appreciate him for who he is and for being real about who he is. I absolutely LOVE him – my husband on the other hand does not, but never does he speak negative about the music or artists that I like unlike the haters who obviously have nothing better to do than bash someone who has more guts in his black painted nails (go Adam!) than you have in your whole entire being! Adam, in case you read these – keep rockin’ – for each person who speaks negatively about you, there are 25 more of us who will wait in line to buy your music!

New England Girl | 6/12/2009, 2:00 pm EST

Love the Glambert! He is this generation’s Elvis. His sales will be in the stratosphere. And by the way,he had to come out with all this info to stay ahead of the idiots like Perez and TMZ.

Ava | 6/12/2009, 6:56 pm EST

I just got my copy of the Adam Lambert cover of Rolling Stone. Thank you so much! I love Adam Lambert – he is so gorgeous and talented with the best voice. He’s the best in the music scene.

XGlambert1877X | 6/12/2009, 8:23 pm EST

Adam you are so amazing

MiMi | 6/12/2009, 9:01 pm EST

You can buy Rolling Stone magazine at Barnes and Nobles and Borders and at your local newspaper/magazine store–that is if there are any left. I reserved a copy and was glad I did. They are selling like hot cakes.
This cover is the bestest/beautifulest/sexiest ever cover on Rolling Stone, and I loved the interview!!!!! I hope Rolling Stone keeps publishing the rest of the photos from the photo shoot over the next months because everybody will be buying those issues, too.
We just can’t get enough of Adam.
Can’t wait for his first album.

Cindy M. - New Jersey Shore | 6/13/2009, 9:57 am EST

I’m in my 50’s also and have become an Adam Lambert fan. I’ve been watching American Idol since it’s start and never have I seen such talent. When you didn’t win I was so upset but realized with your talent you will surpass all of the winners!!!! I cannot wait to see where your career takes you and for your new CD. I have my Ipod pumped with all of your songs and videos from American Idol and look forward to seeing you in Atlantic City in August. My Mom, age 86 is also a big fan of yours along with my 10 year old niece!
I commend you for the way you handle yourself and the press. Hopefully the world will now concentrate on your amazing talent.

Cindy M. - New Jersey Shore | 6/13/2009, 9:59 am EST

I forgot to mention that I just subscribed to Rolling Stone Magazine because I’m a “Glambert fan.” I don’t want to miss any articles or photos!!!!!!

Vanessa | 6/13/2009, 11:36 am EST

Love him!!

Kate | 6/13/2009, 12:14 pm EST

Best RS cover ever!!
Best interview – with Adam Lambert – ever!
Adam your voice is incredible, stunning -Your vocal range is AMAZING!!
We didn’t want AI to end because no more chance to see what fantastic performance Adam would do.
We only watched Idol for Adam.
Can’t wait for your album Adam and the Adam Lambert concert tour!!
RS good for you for honoring this FABULOUS WILD IDOL!!!

jacksoniam | 6/13/2009, 12:33 pm EST

I just don’t get it! Take the makeup and hair dye away and what do you have, someone who couldn’t make it in the real world until he went on AI and put on the show he thought would get him fans. So it worked, but Adam will never be a Freddy, he is just a cheap imitation, a poser! When the newness wears off and the real Adam comes out he will lose a lot of his following. Steady gets it not flamboyance and dramatics, those will fade. Adam is smart and calculating enough to use it while the public is still reeling over the shock of his display.

oracle | 6/13/2009, 3:59 pm EST

just got my 7 copies before they ran out. started looking 2 days ago. there were always 2 other women looking for the mag wherever i went. adam has the talent(don’t forget that he can sing like an angel/devil), he is as handsome and as beautiful as he can be(looking forward to those life sized posters for my boudoir), he has the smarts,(he orchestrated his whole body of work on ai),and he’s genuinely a nice and generous guy. i want as much as he can give,as often as he can give it. love him ,love him, love him.

I CANT WAIT TO BUY HIS CD ALBUM.

I LOVE YOU ADAM LAMBERT. YOU ARE MY IDOL!

MiMI | 6/16/2009, 8:50 am EST

RS magazine can be found at Borders and Barnes and Nobles. Good luck with this issue, it is selling out fast. I live by Ithaca NY and I was able to find a copy at Borders the day the magazine came out.
If you are worried about not finding Adam’s CD in the fall, pre-order it from Amazon now.
I am so happy for Adam. I miss seeing his performances each week. America needs this talent big time. We have been waiting for somebody like him for a long long time. It’s all love.
