Zack Morris and the Roots Rock “Friends Forever” On “Fallon”

6/9/09, 11:06 am EST

It’s not every day Rock Daily gets to write about Saved By The Bell, so we’re going to relish the moment: Actor Mark-Paul Gosselaar showed up on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon last night as his SBTB character Zack Morris for one of the funniest and most nostalgic television moments of 2009. The interview itself was hilarious, with Fallon and “Zack Morris” bouncing joke after obscure joke about the cult teen sitcom. But the real highlight comes toward the end, when Gosselaar — trying to prove he didn’t lip sync on the show — takes the mic with Fallon’s house band the Roots to perform the song “Friends Forever,” which SBTB fans will remember from the Casey Kasem-hosted episode where Zack daydreams he fronts a rock band called Zack Attack. Sure, Gosselaar’s singing voice has changed (for the worse) since hitting puberty, but that doesn’t make the performance any less awes-mazing (as Kanye says).

The Roots also performed the legendary Saved By The Bell theme song, which in itself is a must-see event. Fallon has been on a mission to reunite the SBTB cast on his show since taking over Conan O’Brien’s old spot earlier this year, so bringing Gosselaar — who’s on a TNT show called Raising The Bar — seemed natural. However, the appearance of Gosselaar was Morris was an unexpected bonus, with Morris even busting out his huge cell phone and calling “Time Out” several times during the segment.

Thus far, Fallon has managed to get all but two members of the original cast to commit to a class reunion. Only Screech Powers, played by actor Dustin Diamond, and Tiffani-Amber Thiessen’s Kelly Kapowski have yet to confirm. Considering that Diamond has released sex tapes and seems like he’s available to appear at parties, only Thiessen stands in the way of making this reunion a reality.

The “Zack Attack” episode of Saved by the Bell has to feature some of the absolute worst mimmicked “instrument playing” in the history of television. Truly a classic!

Glad to see Mark Paul has a great sense of humor. I hope his new show does well.

It was the most significant and greatest moment in Saved By The Bell history in the last 15 years. The amount of past episode references was mind boggling. It was also a brilliant way for Zack to promote his new TV show, as everyone between the ages of 25-35 will be watching this clip and emailing a friend to watch it as well. I just hope when Screech makes his appearance on the show, I’ll be making a cameo.

Just awesome. He never broke character once. You had to be a true hardcore SBTB fan to catch every single ep reference.
