Jay-Z Calls For “Death Of Auto-Tune” With “Blueprint 3″ Cut

6/8/09, 12:31 pm EST

When Kanye West said there would be no Auto-Tune on Jay-Z’s upcoming Blueprint 3, he meant it emphatically: The first single off Jigga’s third Blueprint, fittingly called “D.O.A. (Death of Auto-Tune),” debuted June 5th on New York hip-hop station Hot 97. The No I.D.-produced song, which samples heavily Janko Nilovic and Dave Sucky’s “In the Space,” takes aim at the ringtone-happy state of rap while also calling for a cease-and-desist to all artists using the voice manipulating Auto-Tune. Ironically enough, Kanye himself is one of the most notorious users of the technology, as evidenced by his 808s & Heartbreak.

The premiere of “D.O.A.” was the culmination of weeks of rumors surrounding Jay-Z, as the rapper was reportedly considering record label suitors to distribute his Blueprint 3 after buying out his Island Def Jam contract. While there’s been no confirmation, Jay-Z — who was seeking a distributor for both TB3 and the output released through his Roc Nation label with Live Nation — will distribute 3 through Atlantic Records, while his Roc Nation artists will be distributed through a deal with Sony Music, MTV reports. The Blueprint 3 will reportedly be released on September 11th, exactly eight years after the original Blueprint hit stores.

Last night at Hot 97’s Summer Jam all-star concert in East Rutherford, New Jersey, Jay-Z made a surprise appearance to perform “D.O.A.” with T-Pain, another producer and artist who has had a hand in Auto-Tune’s return to prominence. As Jigga says in “D.O.A.,” “You rappers singing too much, Get back to rap, you T-Pain-ing too much.” Check Nah Right for video of Jay’s “D.O.A.” at Summer Jam.

Great, you’ve eliminated ONE crutch from hip-hop. Now get rid of sampling and you’ll be doing something for real. Letting someone else write your backing track isn’t much different than letting a computer keep your voice in tune.

Jeff | 6/8/2009, 1:15 pm EST

At least Kanye admits he’s using AutoTune and it’s used as an effect.

Where is the Rolling Stone investigatve story about how auto-tune and backing tracks are sucking the life out of 95% of “live” concerts these days? Hmmmm? Would you like me to do it for you?

Oh wait, you wouldn’t want to risk losing an interview or a cover story by ratting out your subject now, would you? That would require chutzpah. Get some.

Josh | 6/8/2009, 1:45 pm EST

DOA..hot

Crochet | 6/8/2009, 2:59 pm EST

Wait, no Auto-Tune? That would mean the end of T-Pain’s caree— OH, THAT’S A GOOD THING!

k rockum | 6/8/2009, 4:46 pm EST

Get rid of sampling? A crutch? Hip-hop was built on sampling.

BK | 6/8/2009, 5:02 pm EST

Good. Time to get back to punk. I always wondered why these uber-successful rappers did this. Didn’t they know, you don’t need to know how to sing to sing. This should produce some decent honesty and fleece the herd.

Urbancowboi | 6/8/2009, 10:36 pm EST

Anyone hear the version with biggie or know where I can download it? I don’t know how to post the vid. Thx

Urbancowboi | 6/8/2009, 10:39 pm EST

I found it on you tube in the side bar of the video you guys posted. Here’s the title.

Jay-Z – D.O.A (Death of Autotune) Feat. Biggie

Black Hole Sun | 6/8/2009, 11:27 pm EST

Great song, but it would hold a lot more weight if he wasn’t collaborating with the very people he’s speaking out against in this song. Kanye, who’s a prolific auto-tuner, produced this record and he just performed with T-Pain, the guy who’s the KING of auto-tune. It’d be like writing a song against lip-synching, then doing a duet with Britney Spears. There’s some discrepancy going on here.

If you need to sample and auto tune you must really suck. Poor rappers. And this is the stuff that killed rock? Pitiful

Ron ur a idiot. rock is dead get ova it. listen to some daughty

John T | 6/9/2009, 9:13 pm EST

Just came across one of the funniest sites:

DeathOfAuto-tune.com

It’s all about why Auto-Tune should be killed off. Pretty funny.

Please Explain | 6/10/2009, 9:04 am EST

1st, Jay Z is a terrible rapper, not lyrically, but the way his voice is. I can’t understand why he’s popular.
2nd, rock has been around much longer than rap and requires MUCH MORE TALENT, i.e.- singing, playing one’s own instrument, etc. Any fool can rhyme some words together and have someone produce a decent hook for them.
3rd, why is it rap values idiocy? U no wat, i can tawk ignerrant 2 and I shood b abl 2 sel a millin recardz 2, wurd UP dawg.
That shit’s hilarious.

Iceberg | 6/10/2009, 2:04 pm EST

Ahh, who wanna bet us that we don’t touch leathers
Stack cheddars forever, live treacherous all the et ceteras
To the death of us, me and my confidants, we shine
You feel the ambiance, y’all niggaz just rhyme
By the ounce dough accumulates like snow
We don’t just shine, we illuminate the whole show; you feel me?
Factions from the other side would love to kill me
Spill three quarts of my blood into the street, let alone the heat
Fuck em, we hate a nigga lovin this life
In all possible ways, know the Feds is buggin my life
Hospital days, reflectin when my man laid up
On the Uptown high block he got his side sprayed up
I saw his life slippin, this is a minor set back
Yo, still in all we livin, just dream about the get back
That made him smile though his eyes said, “Pray for me”
I’ll do you one better and slay these niggaz faithfully
Murder is a tough thing to digest, it’s a slow process
and I ain’t got nothin but time
I had near brushes, not to mention three shots
close range, never touched me, divine intervention
Can’t stop I, from drinkin Mai-Tai’s, with Ta Ta
Down in Nevada, ha ha, Poppa, word life
I dabbled in crazy weight without rap, I was crazy straight
Potnah, I’m still spendin money from eighty-eight… what?

Yeah he sucks…..washed up??? WHAT??? Idiots you probably liked, Bartender! The problem is you can’t comprehend the complexity of his metaphors. And if you don’t know what a metaphor is go to Dictionary.com and look it up. Thank goodness he came back like Jordan wearin the four-five or we would have nothing but garbage rappers catering to uneducated 14yr. olds.

U2BLIND2C | 6/11/2009, 11:06 am EST

This track is not aimed @ T-Pain u dumbasses! I can’t stand the auto tune shit my damn self but this aimed @ the no talent ni**az that jumpin on T-Pain’s nutz. And a lot of yLall and society think this auto tune is some new shit? Do ur history if u a true music head…Roger Troutman and Teddy Riley ring any bells???

jackdeezutz | 6/12/2009, 12:33 pm EST

jay z you are a lyrical genius like you said in your song. i think you should keep rappin about these lame ass rappers we got now they ain’t shit, 40 years old and you still doin it, nas gangstarr and all the old school rappers need to show these little gangsta’s how to rap

rapperz delight | 6/12/2009, 5:24 pm EST

tpain and lil wayne should be the only ones be doing autotune. I dont care for jay z to be honest. I prefer real rappers like eazy e, 2pac, biggy, nas, cam’ron, fat pat,lil troy, dre, snoop dogg, method man, redman or wutang,

KBECK | 6/13/2009, 6:42 pm EST

Yo first hip hop is dead, no jay z says its not and auto tune is the new death to rap. First off, jay z is a plain ass hater. Auto tune is hot right now. Dudes be making shit loads of money off of it. Jay z is a lyricist, but fuck his beats are whack. Dude should be in a poetry den with a set of bongo drums playing and him spitting rhymes thinking hes hot, whole people be making auto tune songs making cash and he cries like a little bitch trying to plan the next horrible beyonce song to come out and THAT BITCH IS GARBAGE GARBAGE GARBAGE. Shes got one gay ass song after another OMG dont even get me started on that lame bitch. Why people even listen to that shit is beyond me. Jay z you an old fool. Your rap days are over. Jus cuz you say auto tune is dead don’t mean shit. Why you think you are the father of the rap game is beyond me. You suck dude plain and simple. Sit back and let the new guys handle it. Your off beat rhymes make me sick. God I can’t stand Z dude, he’s just awful, ryhmes are sick but songs with them are awful. Like I said, POETRY DEN BRO. FUck.

Eric | 6/15/2009, 12:12 am EST

First off weezy is garbage and so is t-pain and so is kanye’s 808’s. Graduation was incredible but kanye’s rep died when he stared the autotune. Autotune was originaly for recording people that couldn’t sing well, it was to cover up mistakes and off key notes. The t-pain effect is when u turn the auto tune up way to much. Auto requires no tallent, and p.s. Just because there’s songscare making money doesn’t mean that they took talent to make.
Second jay is the king of hip hop. No one is more real them he is, no one can come up with lyrics like he can, even haters agree with that, and his beats are good, beeps and boops is not rap it’s fake.
Third thank god autotune is dying. There’s no musical value in it, if u need it to make music please quit. Autotunes a joke and there realest rapper out there, the father of the game, the top dog is telling you. You don’t believe? Go listen to reasonable doubt, blueprint, or the black album, then tell me what’s talent, jay or the army of new, bullshit, fake, autotuners.

béke | 6/18/2009, 5:57 am EST

you know keep hating, he doesn’t need anyone to smile on this. he’s THAT good of a rapper!

Marcus A Dean | 6/21/2009, 5:41 pm EST

I feel you all made sound comments, but the point is this. Hip hop died in 1996, the death started with the break up of deathrow. Dre left the camp, Daz did a great job of making beats but we all know Dre is the greatest. Then Pac died and the was a huge blow the real lyrics, beats and meaning in rap. No one had to worry about being compared to and all eyez on me album. Along to go with snoop dog bouncing around from the row to no-limit, horrible, just killed rap. Then of course with the death of biggie, also in 1996,killed the game. So Jay-Z saying auto tone killing hip hop is incorrect. Nas said it best Hip Hop is dead. You can kill something that is already dead. Auto tone is just a branch of the new hip hop, we do not have to embrace it, but we mustv respoect it. Of course if Pac, Biggie, DJ Quick, DoggPound, Snoop, Nas were still all at the top at once, as they were in 1996, then auto would be a none factor. But they are not and we must grow and move on. MAY THE RAP YEARS OF 1993-1996 LIVE ON FOREVER.

THE BAY FOR LIFE, HOLLA

Sauce R | 6/23/2009, 10:23 pm EST

Once again the east coast washed up old ass can’t sell like I use to, oh and married a bitch from the south hatting ass hipicritical dumb-ass has something to say. Who is listening, Wayne shut this dude down with auto tune his boy did a whole album in it, and if you wanna a hit T-Pain is who you go get and now since the new school wants nothing to do with him he, is mad. Please why don’t you live off that fake chick who forgot where she came from, she sells oh and by the way hip-hop I never listen to it, it has always been rap and it lives in the south idiot.

True Haters | 6/24/2009, 7:25 pm EST

I never really saw haters this angry. This dude just made a song and some of your are writing words mad. Like you are punching the keys on your computer ready to throw it. Chill out relax and don’t deny the greatness of Jay-Z. Artist and storyteller. Forget about all the great radio songs, just listen to The Parents and understand how a story line is put together with perfection.

got love the track!!!!!! hova ripped this track up, in my opion he proved why he is still king. I am also a huge weezy fan! why people hating on jigga? you will see, HOVA started something amazing, wait til those mixtape remixs starting coming up, then watch all the haters jump on jiggas d*ck! WEEZY is gona come hard on DOA…….. just wait for it

Rod | 6/25/2009, 9:21 am EST

Cut and dry hawaiin sophie aint shit he was living foxy browns shadow have we all forgotten? Im sure you have let me tell you why. Jay is the product of good advertising hip hop was on the decline till the west vs. east coast feud was going. Hip-Hop was successful again then the deaths of rappers laid that to rest, and to make up for the void this left who? Three “rappers” DMX ja-rule and jay-z. It just so happened that the less messed up/ less love song producing rapper Jay came out alive. Have we also forgotten he got murdered on that Ether track? Nas just didnt get as well publicized and you all eat right up, just like this DOA thing. Think for yourselves!!!

higher education | 6/25/2009, 10:04 am EST

you people should also realise making music is hustle. i dont care what you say its about makin money, listen to any rapper in an interview and he will tell you the games about money. People make music that will sell. you may think weezy sucks but the millions of fans that buy every song he releses will probably disagree. Rap died in 96? your an idiot, nobody cares bout shit that happened 15 years ago. yeah maybe shit would be different if biggie and pac didnt die but they did, life goes on, records aree still sold. jiggas is simply trying to tell rappers theyre acting like r and b singers….. i agree autotune is played out, and its not to cover up mistakes its an effect. t pain made it hot, and mad people jumped on his d*ick and use his shit, why? cause its makin money for him, why not give it a shot? like everything else in this world, shit is hot tell everybodys on it, then its old shit and its dead!
most comments here people are just takin shit….. if u think hip hop is dead (no matter when it died) you agree with HOV are hes trying to revieve it by reminding rappers what the game is about. so why you hating? like kat williams said “i guess a haters job is just to hate”

higher education | 6/25/2009, 10:20 am EST

ROD- what are u saying? u like the track and whats its about or you dont? u said hip hop is dead. if thats true why are u hatin on jay for trying to fix it? and now on this nas topic…… nas is a great rapper, thats why jay z signed him there beef is over. get off it already. i think if nas thought he was better the jigga he wouldnt work under him.

P Funk | 6/25/2009, 11:12 am EST

anybody who truly loves hip hop knows that it’s not dead. word is bond.

but i just love reading these rock listeners comments. please take a moment to pull your heads out of your own asses.

this message was brought to you by one of the few surviving TRUE hip hop heads.

David | 6/25/2009, 2:53 pm EST

what??
hip hop is dead!
u just have bad taste of music…
some rapper needs to bring it back…
because lil wayne and kanye west kill hip hop because of the auto tune..and especially soulja boy kills hip hop! definitely!
jay-z is helping to keep hip hop alive!
by making ” death of auto tune”

Rod | 6/25/2009, 7:06 pm EST

higher- I’ve never liked Jay i mean theres songs here and there but hes always lacked originality, swagger jackin, hes bit BIG’s style hes bit Pac’s style, He’s bit De La soul, he’s even bit Luther vandross chorus’ word for word wtf?! This is is the king of hip hop no way if this was actually true(which its not) I wouldnt want anything to do with hip-hop, I like this track, I DO, but i dont love it, its mediocre and his delivery is starting to sound like weezy. On the NAS beef hahaha!! See you say Jay the best rapper, but then i mention when he got owned on ETHER all of a sudden youre like get off it already, NO! I wont it happened NAS is the greater rapper. Just like Game killed 50. LL killed cannibus.

Thabo | 6/26/2009, 3:02 pm EST

I ain’t no fan of Jigga,Actually his Days are long Gone,But D.O.A is on point, its been a minute since he laced some good delivery on a Beat!!!

Anonymous | 6/27/2009, 5:56 pm EST

Thank you Jay…godbless.

the only thing more obnoxious than autotune is the ringtone fad. Yes I’m lookin at soulja, weezy, t-pain, and the rest of you no talent mops…now tell us how jays ass tastes.

higher education | 6/29/2009, 10:19 am EST

rod- swagger jacking is a form of respect, most rappers do it. in DOA he says “stop your blood clat cryin the kids the dog everybody dying no lying” thats a direct biggie line…. why? is he trying to bite off biggie cause he cant write his own lyrics? NO! i think hes trying to remind people what a rapper is supposed to sound like….. on the nas thing, u can argue on this all day, jay sold way more albums then nas threw out his career, meaning more people are listening to him the nas….. statistics dont lie, nas is a great artist and lryicly he is better then most rappers out there but the bottom line is people dont wana hear the truth….. people like bullshit rap, punch line rap. so to me nas will never have be on the same level as jay z, never. money talks, your opion, my opion dont mean shit!

to this Anonymous jackass, please read some facts befpr you open your mouth, its make you sound really dumb. youtube seach the interviews related to this song and u will see jay z say this song is not ment for people like weezy and kanye who are usuing autotune and making sic tracks…. this is ment for people who think they can hit it big by makin an auto tune track. and how can u put weezy on the same scale and soulja boy? are u retartded? u really lost all respect there…..

anyways to the true hip hop heads if there is any left, the bottom line is this…. whether u like him or u dont, u gota respect the fact that hes trying to bring hip hop back to what is supposed to be befor it died (so somr think) i cant hate the man for that, hes old, yep, past his time, maybe but i dont think so, i do think that this track will make a huge ripple in hip hop. other rappers will take jay song serious because they know hova’s influence on the game. i really cant wait till those mixtapes start coming…. they u will see what the moster created….. HEY WEEZY lets go already!!!!! give the niggas another hard body!

trina | 6/29/2009, 10:52 am EST

jayz is the **** and always will be for once there is a rapper who doesnt have to rap about what he drives and how much money he makes every breath…when u kno he makes way more than these cheesy commercial rappers ..but he doesnt have to do that he can rap about real stuff and still remain among the few many legends who could… and someone said he is a hater???LMAO what in the world does he have to hate on??? way after he dies ppl will still remember him and his lyrics ..but whos going to remember superman that ho and all these songs teaching u how to dance its hilarious that hip hop is going so far down hill to dance instructing videos!!!!!!!…. jay is the realist!!!!

cizach | 6/29/2009, 6:31 pm EST

does anyone remember who stated da auto tune. it was Zapp and Roger. was da first heads to use that shit. t pain and lil wayne are straight trash. the cant make a hit wit out it.

stuckinthepast | 6/29/2009, 7:48 pm EST

zapp and roger used a talk-box with emulated the sound of their keyboards, not to be confused with auto tune, auto tune was a computer based product not released until “recently”

Mika | 6/29/2009, 9:04 pm EST

I LOVE D.O.A!!! It is definitely needed in this ‘ringtone rap generation’!!! People have to understand there is a HUGE difference between Hip hop and rap. Rap is like pop commercial music (Brittney, backstreet boys= Soulja boy, Gucci Mane and the rest of those clowns) hence the soulja boys and others I don’t know there names because I don’t listen to or like it. I don’t care for lil weasel either BUT he knows how to ride the fence, he at least knows how to have some songs where he is actually saying something and others where he is just hitting one liners that rhyme but the song itself makes no sense, so I give him props for that, I still wouldn’t buy his album because that scratchy voice stuff irritates me to pieces AND though he can be humble sometimes, he’s an ignorant problematic little something who has no appreciation of how far he’s come and in the name of ‘keepin it real’ acts like a damn fool embarrassing the culture! He’s not alone though just another follower.

And Um hate to bust your bubbles but, THERE IS NO MORE GANGSTA RAP!! Thank goodness that ended in the 90’s NOTHING in the 2000’s could be considered gangsta rap, rap beefs and bragging about selling drugs and guns is NOT gangsta rap, that’s trying to fake and wear your ‘G’ on your shoulder, I was always told ‘Real G’s don’t TALK about their crawl through the mud’ when you gotta tell someone how gangster you are, then you not one at all(Rick Ross you are NOT a gangster you Effin idiot and cut that bush shit off your face!). And it’s simply all out dumb ass hell shining the spotlight on yourself, just walk into the DEA office with a pound of weed and an ‘arrest me sign!’ Effin morons I swear, I’ve never seen so many men trying hard to IMPRESS OTHER MEN!!! Sounds a little gay makes you wonder about the undercover home thugs out there.
(No I don’t have a problem with gay 2 of my bestfriends are gay as rainbows lmao but they are REAL and don’t front. I have a problem with FAKE people, the DL’s I have NO love for)

Anyway, I’m not saying that all rap/hiphop has to be super serious because no one likes to be constantly preached to, it can be fun and about having good times, but be an individual, stand out amongst your peers, be a LYRICIST and actually have a FLOW!! Hip hop is basically poetry with music, an expression so to speak. It’s not about the bling and oversized chains, and iced out ears, and name dropping and bragging that you hear in almost every song on the radio now, and the MAJORITY of the ‘rappers’ out have the same song with a different name by a different peson, I mean when Missy and Timbaland came out, their beats were new and innovative and EVERYBODY COPIED! When the lean with it Rock with it beat came out EVERY OTHER SONG SHARED THE DAMN BEAT! These kids aren’t leaders they are followers. T-pain was being inventive with auto-tune thing bringing it back, the OTHER ringtone artist wore it out. Ja Rule started the sing song rapping and it was nice back then, most likely was a song about a woman (EX: Where would I be without you), other ‘rappers’ wore it and and is still wearing it out. I don’t too much mind the sampling as long as it’s with permission and it’s creative to where I can’t really tell what was used unless I listen closely a few times, what’s new becomes old and whats old becomes new again it all goes in a circle, in truth without the sampling there would be a lot of forgotten about very hot songs and tracks, but once again it’s overdone and sometimes not for the best don’t sample a song and FUCK it up! I do love the ‘original’ tracks best. And just to let you guys know, T-Pain and Jay are cool, even he’s tired of the overuse of auto tune.

I guess some of us complain because we’ve entered a new era. The Soulja boys and the rest of them are for this generation, somehow they can relate, maybe it’s about being young and not having anything to take seriously yet so them rapping about nothing pumps up a good time. It’s almost the same as when our parents called our music noise. I remember riding in the car with my Mom and us arguing because I didn’t want to hear the Christopher Cross, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin Funkadelic, or Bill Withers stuff we’d had to listen too almost EVERY day riding with her, Jodeci had just came out with ‘Forever My Lady’ and I was Tribe called Quest Crazy lmao, I didn’t understand then but I do now, Now they are ALL classics and in my collection (I love Bill Withers and Jimi Hendrix) lmao wow who’d have thought I’d be saying ‘Bonita Applebaum’ is an ‘Oldie. It’s sad our children will be in their 50’s and 60’s reminiscing to ‘Superman that &%*’. Times are a changing, I guess.

Mika | 6/30/2009, 12:51 am EST

P.S. and yes I know Peter Frampton and Zapp used the talk-box, something similar but not to be confused with auto tune.

higher education | 6/30/2009, 5:03 pm EST

It has started, today the local hip hop radio station in Toronto had the doa debut. They started by talking about the history of auto tune and how it was used way back by cher in believe. But any ways they also played a clip of about 50 recent auto tune tracks then they jay song. After that they talked about rappers making shitty music, people say jay is to old to make a difference in the hip hop game! Lol having radio djs bashing auto tune songs might help fuel the fire under these rappers, to mika u make some strong points but u lost me when u started talking about hip hop being dead, u don’t like Rick Ross cause he raps about his shit, u don’t like rappers who talk about the glam, what are these “gangsta rappers” suppossed to talk about?

oldhead | 7/1/2009, 5:49 pm EST

I’m an old head ok I can take ya back. I’m not a historical genius by any means, but I had a strong love for the music or what yall are calling the “real” hip-hop. I’m talking about EPMD, NWA, Public Enemy, KRS ONE, CUBE, DRE’, LL. KOOL MOE DEE, DJ Quick and Cash Money. Out of all of these I just named every one of them were different, but for us back in the day they represented Hip Hop. I saw Jigga’s performance at the BET awards I thought it was great. Best performance of the night. I read all the lyrics–From his perspective he is right–I understand what he’s saying and I agree, but by the same token this is a business about making money. Hip Hop culture is not dead and because someone comes at it from a different perspective doesn’t lessen what the original meaning was. You will always have those that remain true to the original intent such as Jigga, but by the same token, in order for artists to make money they have to appeal to what the generation is wanting—and this generation is wanting something different than we wanted—Albeit profane and empty—that’s what they want. Soulja Boy is a product of his generation…That’s why he rhymes about whatever it is he rhymes about. Yes!!its empty lyrics but I saw some of everybody even old heads doing that dance. Soulja Boy will fade when this generation stops wanting his music. And by the way–I’m not a fan of Wheezy, True, he does a lot of one liners, but he does have swagger. I’m not a fan of Kanye West, but nobody can beat him performing. But Jigga said something in this song and he delivered it well, he’s one of the Hip-Hop greats.

oldhead | 7/2/2009, 11:30 am EST

I thought about this, and I just knew someone would blast me for adding NWA,Cube and Dre’in my line up for true Hip Hop. I thought most of the Hip Hop phinatics would say that they were gangsta rappers–and I saw some elluding to that in some of the posts. I think they are a part of Hip Hop even though they were considered gangsta rappers Why? because Hip Hop is multi-faceted and that era was another facet of Hip Hop. For all of the ones who’ll say that it was a disgrace to Hip Hop, that is your opinion, however….Old Hip Hop was known for having beefs all the time. LL.CoolJ and KoolMoeD had one of the most COMMERCIALIZED beefs in Hip Hop. There was the West Coast East Coast beef as well and true they were using lyrics to battle instead of talking about shooting and gankin’ someone but nevertheless it was some devisiveness to it. I also thought -could we include Heavy D and Mc Hammer in “real” Hip Hop? I know I do. But they were yet highly COMMERCIALIZED artists with all the dancing etc. I don’t think anyone thought they were clowns at the time (until Mc Hammer went broke). I do agree real rap is poetry with music, but there are different degrees and styles of poetry and some of the newer artists are just plain entertainers getting paid–I’m not hating on them, but man…when they and this generation look back as someone else was saying 20-30 years from now I hope they have more to celebrate than Wheezy and Soulja Boy. (Not that Wheezy is on Soulja Boy’s level, but a lot of his stuff is very empty.)

Dirty Rotten Mister | 8/13/2009, 4:44 pm EST

Stop using auto tune. It’s annoying. PS you can still use it when you sing. Cause 82.235% of you rappers/ hip hop artists can’t sing anyhow, let alone rap.

MUG | 8/17/2009, 7:03 pm EST

@ THE END OF THE DAY, IT’S JUST A GENRE OF MUSIC. THESE ARE’NT WORLD LEADERS WERE TALKIN BOUT. WHAT DIFFERENCE DO THEY REALLY MAKE?

Mr Horizontal Ladies Club | 8/25/2009, 12:12 am EST

Auto-tune will fade and return someday like the wah-wah petal, and every other new and old effect in recording. Keep the great music coming and weed out the crap by not supporting it. It’s that easy!

Rob | 8/25/2009, 4:41 am EST

The simple fact of the matter is Jay is absolutely correct in saying that auto-tune is “ONE” of the things killing hip-hop. But what I personally believe he means is, auto-tune, talking over the beat, making up words that dont even make sense…WHATSOEVER(COUGH WEEZY COUGH), it all adds up to the genocide of what once was a state of mind. Music to these guys is a serious thing, money is part of it, but its not ALL of it. Nowadays, its about the money…these rappers dont take pride in their music, Any one of you could get on a track and write nursury rhymes as good or better as these chumps…and make a million dollars. What happend to the days of punch-lines (that make sense), flow, street credibility, good clean BATTLES!? When someone can make a song using the line LOL I MISS YOU as the chorus in a song and still be respected by fellow mc’s and on the street something is terribly wrong. I remember when, if a MC remotely went soft they stopped selling records. Its becoming quite aggravating that when everytime I turn the radio on I hear R&B, because its just that, R&B…Regardless of the fact that its “WHATS HOT RIGHT NOW”…its not RAP…its SOFT wanna g’s in a sweet sugar coating. DEATH TO SINGIN RAPPERS AND BACK TO THE REAL. Get your act together. for real.. D.O.A. is hot…period. Its hip hop at its finest.

One the most polished songs by Jay Z .. just shows how great of a producer is kanye ..

nikkid | 9/10/2009, 10:05 am EST

Auto-tune is some real bullsh*t. It’s hot right now because morons keep entertaining no talent having “artists” by purchasing their records. It’s garbage. Listen to T-Pain’s records, he talks about the same lame ish over and over. It’s played out. I’m over shallow “artists” writing about banging girls out, money, bling, and other pointless material crap. Dear to be profound. I hope auto-tune is on it’s way out along with the era of the ringtone rappers.

Clay | 9/14/2009, 8:46 pm EST

Finally Jay say’s what all real hip hop fans have been saying since day one. AUTO TUNE KILLED HIP HOP! It is turning the urban art form that channels all the troubles of inner city life into popped up over produced pieces of crap. I do think it is kind of ironic that out of all the producers to produce this, its Kanye. He, in my opinion, is the most latent abuser of auto tune. Lets get hip hop back to its root’s with artists like cube, dead prez, nwa, etc. Everybody else has said all of the other ones. Basically, WHAT WOULD PAC AND BIG SAY? would they be down for this massacre of hip hop roots? *off my soap box*

M.I.T. | 9/17/2009, 3:34 am EST

it’s obvious he is dissing lil wayne and his trendiness…your pants too tight, your voice too light? he is dissing more than just auto-tune

haterfree | 11/19/2009, 12:22 pm EST

why is it when jay-z does a song called deatch of autotune does it mean then autotune is dead. If he makes a album called singing is dead or something just for example would it be dead then? noooo! fuck this T-pain will never die with or without autotune.
