“Guitar Hero: Van Halen” Nixes Michael Anthony, Sammy Hagar

When Rolling Stone checked out a trailer and some video footage of the new Guitar Hero: Van Halen from last week’s E3 Expo, we noted the band seemed short a few members — namely founding bassist Michael Anthony and onetime frontman Sammy Hagar. Our suspicions that the former members would not be included in the game were confirmed today by a spokesperson for the game.

An Activision/RedOctane rep says only David Lee Roth and Wolfgang Van Halen will appear in GH:VH alongside Eddie and Alex Van Halen. Inquiries about the track list — to determine whether the game will feature any Hagar-era tracks — went unanswered at press time, but according to reports out of E3, only DLR-fronted songs like “Jump,” “Panama,” “Hot For Teacher” and “Little Guitars” have been revealed, among other tracks from the band’s original lineup.

(Van Halen Reborn: Photos From the Tour Opener.)

According to IGN, in the game “You’ll start out seeing the modern Van Halen, but eventually unlock the classic images of the band with huge hair and tight pants.” However, as Rock Daily joked last week, even as the band’s image changes from the spandex era to modern day, young Wolfgang’s appearance stays comically consistent throughout. For the non-Van Halen songs in the game — tracks by Weezer, Queens of the Stone Age, Queen, Blink-182 and many more — players will take on the guise of previous Guitar Hero characters and not Halen themselves.

Complete BS.

I hope the Van Halen fan base rises up to dispute this.

Ruining the Hall of Fame because of childish feuds was inexcusable.

Now, they want to cater this game as if Hagar and Mike never existed? Who exactly do they think is going to BUY this game?

As with the HOF, Eddie & Alex are screwing over fans caught in the middle of their own bitter, personal game. Bottom line.

Complete BS and I hope die-hard VH fans make a stink about this.

llyanabuey | 6/8/2009, 6:31 pm EST

thats weak…im not going anywhere near this game…what a bunch of douchebags…fatty dingdongs van halen cant sing back up vocals and has the stage presence of a mic stand; yes its important for it to be there but is any one really paying attention to it

Go VH! | 6/8/2009, 7:16 pm EST

I’m a diehard Roth fan, but…yeah, this is more than a bit silly. I sorta understand being at odds with former bandmates (even if it is over childish nonsense), but acting like the past didn’t happen is unfair to the fans.

ROCKNROLLPIMP | 6/8/2009, 7:53 pm EST

my one time favorite (still alive) guitarist is a big fat PENIS
bought the “foot” lp
will pirate the VH one
and to think the self titled lp is (was) in my top 10 all time.
this just gits my goat :)

Bocephus | 6/8/2009, 9:18 pm EST

I agree.

Ed ruined a great bandwith great history.

So sad.

Stubborn EVH.

Josh | 6/8/2009, 9:29 pm EST

I think Eddie did the right thing I mean these guys went out there and formed a band called The Other Half selling there tequila and hot sauce playing van hagar songs without the man that wrote the music for those songs. That`s totally disrespecful to eddie and alex..I think Dave Ed Alex & Wolf are in the studio right now creating what will be the next VAN HALEN CD !!!!

The Rickster | 6/8/2009, 9:46 pm EST

Josh, You’re way off base. EVH kicked Sammy and Michael to the curb — after they waited for him to get his act together…and waited…and waited. Now he wants everybody to believe that they quit. That’s ridiculous.

For him to erase them from this game, especially Michael Anthony, is appalling. Michael Anthony was a HUGE part of the Van Halen sound — his background vocals were amazing! All Wolfgang did was one tour — big deal. Nice to have a dad who just hands you the keys to the car — The car Michael Anthony helped build. For Wolfgang to be featured with “classic” era Van Halen in this game is completely stupid.

I won’t buy it, that’s for sure.

GassyPhil | 6/8/2009, 9:58 pm EST

Eddie is dilusional!

Anonymous | 6/8/2009, 10:11 pm EST

Love Dave

Unchained | 6/8/2009, 10:36 pm EST

Eddie is the problem, as usual.

I won’t even look at this POS game. I can’t wait until VH releases new music so I can laugh at it.

Luck ran out. | 6/8/2009, 10:43 pm EST

Michael Anthony has been the luckiest man in Rock n Roll ever. I agree with Josh. He made his choices, and now he is living with the reality of it. Landing on your Chickenfeet isn’t that bad.

Tina Young | 6/8/2009, 11:23 pm EST

To leave Sammy & ESPECIALLY Mikey out of this game is just another stupid move on the part of the VH brothers. My son has almost all of the Guitar Hero games, but this one he will NOT Be buying! Eddie screws Mikey (& Sammy)AGAIN!

Big Daddy | 6/8/2009, 11:38 pm EST

“Go VH” said it right-this is silly. Actually it’s pretty disrespectful-and the fans are the ones this hurts, because most die-hard VH fans wanted the Roth reunion, but all this bullshit taints it. Why can’t Eddie be gracious for God’s sake-nobody has to be the bad guy in this situation.

I have a hunch that this is more about $$$ than anything else, because I’m guessing if he uses Van Hagar era music or includes Michael Anthony, that would shrink his piece of the Guitar Hero pie.

Great to have Roth back in the band, but this other crap is embarrassing. Love you Eddie, but get over yourself.

Mike | 6/8/2009, 11:44 pm EST

Ed, you’re a moron.

Josh | 6/9/2009, 12:41 am EST

Have you heard Chickenfoot doing “Oh Yeah” from Conan ?? Is that the world famous Michael Anthony background vocals everyones talking about ?? Give it a listen and then reply.

six-string Pete | 6/9/2009, 2:04 am EST

Josh, bringing up the song “Oh Yeah” is a poor example, as it’s a “gang-singing” track.

But I’ve heard the album and it has great background vocals. Michael Anthony brings his game.

dbennett5150 | 6/9/2009, 4:36 am EST

Hey, Josh “there” music. Please read your post. And do you know they are in the studio?, Did you look through a window? Even though EVH said he has only been over to Roth’s house to talk about writing.
Richard, right on point about the HOF. Disgrace to the fans.
llyanabuey, “Presence of a mic stand”….(LOL)
Eddie is probably at a used CD store with an eraser trying to get MA’s face off VH1 and OU812!!

Ray | 6/9/2009, 7:00 am EST

People are fighting over a silly game? I guess the REAL problems of the world aren’t important enough.

six-string Pete | 6/9/2009, 7:12 am EST

I do talk about the REAL problems of the world – on the Huffington Post. If you want my take on the situation on N. Korea, I’d be happy to discuss, but I don’t think this is the proper forum.

We’re talking Van Halen here, more specifically, “What’s wrong with this picture?”

Don | 6/9/2009, 7:43 am EST

Eddie,
Your a prime example of how cocaine can dilute one’s mind! Maybe your brother Alex is on the crap too.
To desecrate a monumental band like the one that all four of you created is just the icing on the cake!
First your marriage, Then your status of a guitar GOD. After Fair Warning your creativity disappeared as quick as each line you snorted up your nose. You have become a disgrace to the guitar world!

Your day is coming!

Don't buy any new VH stuff | 6/9/2009, 8:49 am EST

Boycott this and anything VH does. That will smarten Mr. Alky-coke head, Eddie, up!

OU8crap | 6/9/2009, 8:49 am EST

Chickenfoot is an embarrassment, as anyone who watched Conan can attest to. It’s Eddie’s band, and MA decided he’s rather be with Sammy. Dave is back and all is right with the world. MA is totally expendable, while Eddie is (still) an iconic guitar legend.

Ali Beer-Line | 6/9/2009, 8:53 am EST

Just curious – did they re-record Mike’s bass parts for the game?

He’s not in it, so I wouldn’t put it past Eddie to have Wolfgang recut the songs.

NewVH | 6/9/2009, 8:54 am EST

By the way, the last tour with Dave and without Michael Anthony was, by all accounts, a HUGE success. Shows who is really needed in the band. Can’t wait for the new VH album! And all you who are calling for boycotts and saying you’ll never play GHVH are really just kidding yourselves.

weesediver | 6/9/2009, 10:00 am EST

love Van Halen old and new…

Jeff | 6/9/2009, 10:20 am EST

Effing ridiculous. No Sammy/Gary tracks? How about “Right Now, Poundcake, Runaround, A Year to the Day, Aftershock, 316, Pleasure Dome?”
And before you DLR lovers start ripping those songs, just remember this is a video game, not a greatest hits CD. Those songs would be fun to play on the game.

Anonymous | 6/9/2009, 10:50 am EST

I say good! The world had enough of the sammy era of VH. Time to get back to the roots….

Dirty Duck / Ducky | 6/9/2009, 10:57 am EST

I say good! The rock world has had enough of van hagar! Let’s get back to the roots of the band! Granted, mike’s no longer there but he’s with sam now so thats that! Get over it and look ahead!
VH gave us the BEST 6 rock albums ever recorded and it’s time to add #7!

VH5150 | 6/9/2009, 10:59 am EST

“It’s Eddie’s band, and MA decided he’s rather be with Sammy.”

Apparently the decision was made for Mike, he found out he wasn’t in the band when everyone else did. He didn’t get a phone call.

Before the 2004 tour, Eddie didn’t want Mike in the band and in order to be a part of the tour Mike had to sign away a lot of his rights to the Van Halen name.

Jeff | 6/9/2009, 11:02 am EST

and btw, BALANCE is the best VH album ever.

VH5150 | 6/9/2009, 11:18 am EST

Even when VH does something good like this, they find away to sour it for part of their fan base.

Everything they have released or done starting with the 1996 Best of Vol. 1 through the GHVH has always had something good, but a hit of something sour.

Best of Vol 1 that teased a Dave reunion.

The Dave “reunion” in 1996.

VH3 being horribly produced by Mike Post.

Recording tracks with Dave in 2000 only to scrap them.

The 2004 tour where Eddie was hot and cold depending on the night.

The 2004 “Best of Both Worlds” Greatest Hits album with rotating Hagar & Roth tracks instead of one disk each.

The DLR reunion tour without Mike.

Now this game that gives them a new audience for their music celebrating their history, but ignoring part of it at the same time.

Horrible marketing and management.

Gav | 6/9/2009, 11:20 am EST

just to add to someones earlier point…the best VH album is balance, no question…it really connects emotionally unlike any other VH album and the feelin’ solo is as technically as great as erupytion with bucketloads of, well, feeling!.

i will NOT buy GH:VH if it doesnt feature any hagar stuff…

Dirty Duck / Ducky | 6/9/2009, 11:22 am EST

I couldnt stop laughing when I read jeff’s comment on “balance” being the BEST VH album! Man! No matter how old i get people still baffle me with their taste in music…
Thanks for the laugh jeff!

Jeff | 6/9/2009, 11:37 am EST

Ducky–
Tell me what you love about VH, and I’ll show you where it is on that album. They were all 4 at the top of their game, while DLR was giving mouth-to-mouth to drunk trannies in NYC.

Gav | 6/9/2009, 11:44 am EST

LOL, it is the most powerful album there..and sounds so emotive. Plus as a guitar player it is technical wizadry!

Steve | 6/9/2009, 12:07 pm EST

Please someone just stick a fork in these guys. They’re done and the last tour proves my point. They should have taken Mike back and not including him on Guitar Hero and pretending that he never existed or contributed to what made Van Halen Van Halen is just sad and very juvenile. Eddie and Alex – GROW THE $#@$ UP!

Dee Dee Ramone | 6/9/2009, 12:08 pm EST

I’m waiting to buy the Chickenfoot version. F Eddie, go back to doin’ speedballs. You haven’t made a decent album since 0u812.

Marvin Hamfist | 6/9/2009, 12:12 pm EST

I bet Gary Cherone is pissed….

Valerie Bertinelli | 6/9/2009, 12:12 pm EST

Man, I hope Chicken Foot goes Double Platinum and the next VH record bombs, if it ever gets released. I won’t be buying it. I might download it for free. bwahahah.! Hey, it’s past Wolf-Faces bedtime. Tell him to put the twinkies down!

JX | 6/9/2009, 12:19 pm EST

Don’t buy the game.Don’t buy the album. Don’t see the tour.Ignore them.Support CHICKENFOOT !

james | 6/9/2009, 12:22 pm EST

Last I looked, wasnt it was “EMT” DLR that brought us the BIGGEST selling tour in the history of VH?
92 million was it? And as far as your emt comment it lacks class. Why kick a man for trying to save lives? Sad.

Ali Beer-Line | 6/9/2009, 12:35 pm EST

Buy the new Cameltoe, er, Chickenfoot album! It rocks.

Jeff | 6/9/2009, 12:39 pm EST

it definitely was their biggest tour, and rightfully so since they reunited with their original singer. that doesn’t change the fact that BALANCE was the best album they created. and, yeah the joke, it lacked class, sort of like the VH family turning on those that helped make them who they are (fans and ex-bandmates alike.)

VH5150 | 6/9/2009, 12:40 pm EST

I wouldn’t hold my breath on the new album talk. Eddie has had “10 albums worth of music” waiting on a singer since 1999.

VH5150 | 6/9/2009, 12:41 pm EST

“BIGGEST selling tour in the history of VH?”

Nostalgia plus $100 tickets will do it.

Oddjob | 6/9/2009, 12:53 pm EST

Gary Cherone is a footnote in the Van Halen tradition, I would have been shocked if he was included in the game. As for Hagar, not that DLR is back I can almost understand them leaving him out of the band- their sound was so much different when he was in the band, leaving him out can be justified. But leaving out Michael Anthony, and placing young Wolfgang in his place- in the totally anachronistic circumstances, as though he was part of the history of the band- ust makes the Van Halens look like juvenile idiots.

Michael Anthony went out to play with Hagar because he gets bored sitting around with his thumb up his asshole for 6-7-year stretches, which the Van Halens routinely do. That kind of time wasting may be good enough for a dried-up old former talent like Eddie, but MA has his sh*t together and would rather do something. Kicking him out of the band as punishment? Grow up, morons.

Bman | 6/9/2009, 1:32 pm EST

Hard to believe that all the members of Metallica could put their differences aside but Van Halen can’t. 10 years ago who would have thought that James and Lars would have a better heads on their shoulders than the VH brothers?

VHwithDave | 6/9/2009, 1:34 pm EST

Someone actually said “Balance” is the best VH album? SERIOUSLY??? So much for the credibility of THAT moron!
Michael Anthony (or “Mikey” as some of you who seem a little too comfortable with the man put it) was a part of a legendary rock band. If he would have valued this legacy, he wouldn’t have sided with Sammy when Sammy left. The VH brothers are totally justified in kicking him out, because his actions were a slap in their face. Roth will go down as the best frontman in rock history, and Ed is still the most innovative guitarist alive. And anybody who has seen Wolfgang play AND SING BACKUPS knows that he’s a more than able substitute for Michael Anthony. VH just was not VH with Sammy, and anything after “1984″ is not true Van Halen. And as far as the best album, that would be the first one DUH!

PG | 6/9/2009, 1:54 pm EST

It is a shame. Michael Anthony was a key member of the band. He provided killer bass lines, all the back up vocals and provided the arrangements. It is terrible how such a talent can be swept under the rug and replaced by a toddler.

VH5150 | 6/9/2009, 2:00 pm EST

“If he would have valued this legacy, he wouldn’t have sided with Sammy when Sammy left.”

He didn’t side with anyone. He sat at home after the tour with Cherone from 1998-2002 waiting on something to happen with the band and then he was invited to go on the Hagar/Roth tour of 2002 so he went.

“The VH brothers are totally justified in kicking him out, because his actions were a slap in their face.”

Which is it? Eddie said he quit, now you are saying they kicked him out.

“Ed is still the most innovative guitarist alive.”

He is? He’s released 5 songs in 11 years. Three on a best of album in 2004 and 2 on a porn soundtrack. Nobody has heard anything innovative from him in years.

Eddie is one of my all time favorites, but Van Halen hasn’t been the most fan friendly band over the past 15 years.

I’m the one that said Balance was the best VH release. Like I posted earlier, tell me what you love about VH and I’ll show you where it is on that album. Top to bottom, the best release from them.

It’s got variety-
-good time sex-drugs and rock n’roll songs (Big Fat Money, Amsterdam)
-ballads (can’t stop lovin’ you, not enough, take me back)
-good ‘ol fashioned hard rock (7th seal, don’t tell me, aftershock)
-the blauchitherium guitar instrumental has so many layers, you hear something new every time you listen to it
-the percussion instrumental (doin’ time) is amazing in it’s own right. AVH actually MAKES MUSIC thru the drums, not just keeping time, playing fills, etc.
-the weak link for me (strung out) always kinda creeped me out
-”Feelin” is got to be one of their greatest songs ever. The powerful message, vocals, and the breakdown from 2:55-4:10 is some of the best you will ever hear.
-It made it to #1 on the Billboard charts in 1995, which was not a good time for rock bands.

For the haters out there, I suggest you give it another listen, even though you probably don’t own it and probably haven’t even heard most of it, you just dismissed it as Sammy-era stuff. You’re robbing yourself of some great music.

VH5150 | 6/9/2009, 2:53 pm EST

Balance is a great CD, but it’s held back by the awful Can’t Stop Loving You. The only reason that song made the album is because Ray Danniels wanted Eddie and Sammy to write a pop song.

What sucks even more is that a great song Crossing Over was left off the album to put Can’t Stop Loving You on it.

Van Halen’s debut album is their best, followed by Fair Warning.

Just my opinion.

Van Huesan | 6/9/2009, 2:55 pm EST

I’d rather listen to some Chickenshit. Hagar and Michael Anthony rock.

Michaels | 6/9/2009, 2:56 pm EST

hey josh, you are a clown! What do you think david lee roth was doing from 86- til 2007. He was in a cover band of van halen.

VHwithDave | 6/9/2009, 3:20 pm EST

Van Hagar was such a bastardization of the real Van Halen, and it’s all because of that obnoxious thumbnails-on-chalkboard sound of Hagar’s vocals and his pg-rated fan friendliness. The old VH was a dangerous band, and they had a cool edge to them. With Sammy, it became watered down pop rock. What the original VH had was the cool factor and certainly originality. The first album (and other Roth albums after that but certainly the first one) made people sit up, take notice and go “WOW!!”.

Granted, as people, Sammy and Mike are probably real nice guys (and I admit Dave and Eddie are probably real pricks). But as far as who delivered the best sound for Van Halen and who made the biggest cultural impact on rock music, you have to give that to the original Roth-fronted Van Halen.
Now as far as Anthony not being in the group, nobody knows for sure what happened. All I’m saying is that when you’re in an iconic rock band, you don’t screw up that legacy by playing shows with an ex-bandmate and taking a cheap shot at VH by calling yourselves “The Other Half” while playing the band’s legendary music, and I can easily see why Ed and Alex were PO’d. And yes, cornHOLE, I’ve been in bands for the past 26 years, douchenozzle.

Eskimo | 6/9/2009, 3:22 pm EST

This band is almost comical now. Amazing how every single time the band is faced with a decision to make, it makes the one that gives the finger to VH fans? (RRHOF induction, Kicking Mike out of the band for what could have been a true reunion in a lowlife fashion, then erasing his image from album covers). Now this. It is so unbelievably bad to watch Ed throw away the legacy of this once mighty band.

HOLE | 6/9/2009, 3:32 pm EST

ed van halen is a scumbag, coke addict, jerk with the maturity level of a 15 year. he consistently insults fans with his “business decisions”. and the new van halen is pretty much a comic book version of the band. it stinks to watch such a great band turned into a joke because eddie is such an arrogant loser. they will never get another dime from my wallet…unless there’s a real reunion.

Did he quit? Was he fired? Who the hell knows. But I saw the tour and seeing Roth with Eddie again and performing well was damn sweet. It would have been nice to have Mike there, sure, but Wolfgang was, at the very least, a suitable backup and is, for his age, a damn good rock bass player and backup singer whose performance in the backup role allowed the tour to work very well. And yes, cornHOLE, I’ve been in bands for the past 26 years and I’m looking forward to not only Guitar Hero Van Halen but also the next REAL Van Halen cd with Dave on vocals. It will undoubtedly be better than anything fat Sam and Chickenfeces are doing.

So a bunch of gaming geeks are upset they can’t pretend they’re Michael Anthony or Sammy Hagar? Boo-hoo. I myself can’t wait to be Wolfie.

BRUCE | 6/9/2009, 3:48 pm EST

IT’S just sad -for the fans, the band we all love-whether it’s sam or dave-go down like this.this is the band -now the fans fight among themselves-and why -because the van halen band and the members are like family-the music-van halen fans are very loyal-and we all try to hold on to hope, that maybe one day-that all the members will find peace with themselves-we hope as fans to see the KING of guitar-show the fans once again-long live VAN HALEN

Rob | 6/9/2009, 4:10 pm EST

It doesn’t bother me so much that Sammy isn’t in the game and I love Sammy. But not having Michael Anthony is a complete joke. What makes it even more ridiculous is the fact that Wolfie will be lip-synching to Michael Anthony’s background vocals.

Trust me, Eddie will release “Rockband: The Hagar Years” when he needs more money.
GO CHICKENFOOT!!!!

“Hard to believe that all the members of Metallica could put their differences aside but Van Halen can’t. 10 years ago who would have thought that James and Lars would have a better heads on their shoulders than the VH brothers?”

James realized what an a-hole he was, made up for it to his bandmates (including Newstead) and quit drinking. Eddie…. is he still sober? Then again Ed strikes me as one of those cats whose never at fault at anything be it band break ups, or his addictions. (my old man gave me cigs and volka)

Again it is humorous how there is a Gold Mine of music just laying around 5150 ready to be produced and recorded, but Ed just hasn’t gotten around to it yet. I know Ed’s getting hitched, Wolf is graduating etc…. but after years of set backs and false starts you’d think he’d be ready to roll ASAP. Or is there something else he isn’t telling us?

Ed has said it before and I’m sure he’ll say it again, it’s his band. You like the new stuff buy it, don’t like it, then don’t.

Anonymous | 6/9/2009, 4:15 pm EST

“All I’m saying is that when you’re in an iconic rock band, you don’t screw up that legacy by playing shows with an ex-bandmate and taking a cheap shot at VH by calling yourselves “The Other Half” while playing the band’s legendary music”

The Other Half name didn’t start until 2006, two years after the last Van Hagar tour and it was pretty obvious that Eddie didn’t want Mike around.

DLR went out for over a decade playing songs he and Eddie wrote together. (In fact his whole show was pretty much all Van Halen and even even hired a VH cover band to be his back up band.) Hagar and Anthony had every right to go out and tour and play songs they helped write. At least they had some pride in their work outside of Van Halen and didn’t just do a tribute show.

So I guess Eric Clapton can’t do any Cream, Blind Faith, Yardbirds or Derek & The Dominoes songs in his shows?

Gregg Allman can’t do any Allman Brothers songs in his solo shows?

Where is the line drawn? If Springsteen does another solo tour, can he not play any songs he recorded with the E Street Band?

This reminds me of when an eccentric millionaire leaves all of his money to his cat because he’s mad at his family.

VH5150 | 6/9/2009, 4:39 pm EST

Eddie wouldn’t use his band to market anything, because if he did that he’d be a hypocrite since he was all upset over Sammy and Mike promoting their booze and hot sauce.

Jeff | 6/9/2009, 5:15 pm EST

Let’s face it everybody, VH is done. They may string together a couple of songs to release and do another greatest hits tour, but the VH we all know and loved ended many, many years ago.

But, the good thing is that you can still think of them as your favorite band, because you still have those songs, cds, tapes, live videos, etc. (like me with Balance.) Nothing can change what they did. The musical landscpae has passed them by and they didn’t try and keep up (or do anything, for that matter.)
So, if they are content with doing nothing, we should lower our expectations accordingly and expect nothing from them.

What a non-issue. If you want to make music like Van Halen, go buy a damned guitar and learn how to play it like a real musician. Don’t waste your time and money on poseur games. Do you think chicks are gonna dig you ’cause you play a toy plastic guitar that any monkey can play? Pathetic. Visit your local music store, find some folks to jam with, and make it real!

Bob C. | 6/9/2009, 7:32 pm EST

Those who know, know Van- Halen was much better with Hagar ! In 1991 Eddie said it himself ! If the latest tour with Dave was so good why no live recordings for us to listen. Why no new music !

Anonymous | 6/9/2009, 7:49 pm EST

I love all the Sammy Hagar bashing that STILL goes on. David Lee Roth quit Van Halen and they had no choice but to carry on with out him and THEY chose Sammy and made a Fuck ton of cash with him. It’s not like Sammy kicked Dave out the door. Sammy didn’t do anything except give 110% to Van Halen and yet some of you out there (including Eddie and Alex) still cant except that. Was Sammy Dave? No, he was Sammy, and he and Mike were really the only ones who cared about preserving the Van Halen Legacy, and they still got shit on. But to hear Ed tell it, he’s the victim and never done a damn thing wrong. It’s sad really, because I enjoyed the Sammy era as much as the Dave era. I think they were a better “band” with Sammy. I might be in the minority, but I’ll stick by my guns. Sammy was great in Van Halen, and without him, Van Halen would be a footnote in rock history and not THE GREATEST AMERICAN ROCK BAND EVER.

I love how everyone is an expert on how dave and eddie are as people. all you knownothing have never met hung out or even spoke to them. I bet you are the same people that said the 2008 tour would never last past 2 shows and it would fall apart. You were all wrong, it was the biggest most successful tour Van halen has ever done. So you know nothing can keep spouting your drivel cause you all don`t have a clue whats in story for Van Halen.

Josh | 6/9/2009, 8:06 pm EST

I love how all you know nothing act like you know Dave and Eddie are as people, when none of you have ever met hung out with or even spoken to them . I bet you`re the same people that said the 2008 tour would`nt last more that 2 shows and fall apart.Well..it was the biggest most successful tour van halen has ever done. You have no idea what there doing or about to do.

Leon | 6/9/2009, 8:13 pm EST

Mike and sammy don`t deserve anything from van halen their a bunch or backstabbers. sammy uses ever chance he gets to use the van halen name to get press and slam eddie. hell.. thats the only reason people even care about him.and as for mike he was replaced by a kid. a teenager replaced him and pulled it off on a world tour.damn..that must sting.

VH5150 | 6/9/2009, 8:17 pm EST

“You were all wrong, it was the biggest most successful tour Van halen has ever done.”

Biggest? No, then never left North America. Almost any of their tours prior to 2004 were bigger.

Most successful? Debatable since ticket prices went all the way up to $140 in some markets. It may have grossed more money, but that was more due to higher ticket prices than anything.

“you all don`t have a clue whats in story for Van Halen. ”

True, neither do you though. If you go with history, it will go something like this.

Eddie will do an interview saying they are going to start a new album and things are great. He will say (insert current lead singer here) is his soulmate and the band will never work with another lead singer and if this doesn’t work out he’ll take up the tuba.

Months will pass before we hear something again.

We’ll finally hear something, but it’ll will be that the current lead singer is no longer the singer, but they are getting (fill in the black of a previous singer) back in the band and are working on new material and a tour.

Months will pass before we hear anything again…

I’m just going by what has happened in the past almost 15 years.

1996 fire Sammy Hagar
1996 bring David Lee Roth back for 2 new songs on the Best of album.
1996 tell world DLR wasn’t back
1996 hire Gary Cherone
1998 release album and tour with Cherone
1999 tell the world you are working on new material with Cherone and things are going great
1999 Fire Cherone
2000 Bring DLR back to work on new tracks
2001 stop calling DLR and he tells the media that you have worked on new songs, but it apparently won’t see the light of day.
2001-2003 NOTHING
2004 Bring Hagar back and release another greatest hits album, record 3 songs and tour off of that.
2005 Record 2 songs for a porn soundtrack
2005-2006 NOTHING
2007 Bring DLR back for a huge tour, but delay it for months almost immediately after the press conference…however as an immediate buzz kill announce that Michael Anthony has been replaced by your son
2007 Remove every picture of Michael Anthony from your website.
2007 announce a 3rd greatest hits album, just for the years 78-84, never release it
2007-2008 tour with Roth

I’m sure big things are in store next.

Don’t Kid your self into thinking that the kid sang and played bass all by himself on that tour.

The Mynx | 6/10/2009, 1:28 am EST

Hey Leon,

You have no clue. Mike and Sammy have been totally classy. They could slam Eddie to hell, but they don’t. In fact, I’ve seen recent Chickenfoot interviews where they say what a great guitarist he is.

And as far as “a kid,” replacing Michael Anthony, uh, it helps that that kid is a blood relative. Who can’t play nor sing half as well as Michael Anthony.

And face it, Wolfgang looks ridiculous in that dice outfit his dad wore 25 years ago.

This game shows one thing: Eddie’s utter disrespect for the fans.

Aaron D. | 6/10/2009, 1:44 am EST

It’s so funny that people still talk about Van Halen as if they were ever that great. With the sole exception of 1984, the quality of their albums is spotty at best.

“Those who know, know Van- Halen was much better with Hagar ! In 1991 Eddie said it himself !”

Ed also said the Gary Charone lead VH III would blow away the Hagar and Roth era. Few would agree that is the case. Then again what do you expect him to say “Oh, it’s Ok but it lacks the fire and passion we had 20 years ago.”

RP | 6/10/2009, 11:09 am EST

Ed can suck it! That is if he has enough tongue left. DLR may be everyones choice for top VH front man but replacing MIchael Anthony with your chubby son. What an f’in joke. This clown keeps screwing with all the true VH fans. How many “lost” years has this band had. Pathetic! What is Anthony supposed to do sit around until Ed gets his act together and now Guitar Hero with your fat kid. I give up. Great guitar player, terrible person.

YankeeRose | 6/10/2009, 9:25 pm EST

I’d buy it, if it also had Hagar era VH tracks. It’s sad they are ignoring half the band’s history. Even sadder they are putting Wolfie instead of Mike in it.

Aaron | 6/10/2009, 9:41 pm EST

This isn’t too much of a problem cause I mean, I haven’t been too impressed with the new GH games (Have them all except Metallica, which I heard was good. I may get it). I’m a pretty big Van Halen fan and boy did it bother me that Wolfie gets the passing ticket. I mean, it makes sense that Eddie would choose family but Wolfie is almost as old as I am and something just doesn’t feel right about that. From what I know, the game will be going thru time periods? Jeez, it took Wolfie that long to get his pubes?

Terry from South Detroit | 6/10/2009, 10:33 pm EST

WTF is the matter with you people? Who gives a rat’s ass about any geetar hero? How many of you tools actually play that crap?
Thank god I’m 50-years-old and remember real rock’n'roll and great journalists like Gonzo because, if he were alive, he’d puke on you punks.
To discuss a playlist for nerds who stand in the entranceway at Best Buy and play fucking plastic like the little turds they are, jesus christ, the geeks from the eighties have grown up, had kids and read Rolling Stone and discuss…Guitar Hero? Fuck off.
Eddie was a great guitar player in his day. If his dick was as big as his ego, he’d still be banging Valerie. If he could still kick ass, Sammy would be singing, not Hollywood Dave and his adorable hat display.
Van Halen smoked in their day. What is their appeal now? To old broads in their forties, thirty pounds overweight, with their asses crushed into leather.
By the way, is Wofgang named after Eddie Munster?

top jimmy no more | 6/10/2009, 11:38 pm EST

Cash those checks while you still can Ed, you and your desperate old man attempts to keep your VH empire ‘all in the family.’
Of course you want Mike and Sammy out, so you don’t have to pay them. That’s alright, I’m sure between pre-VH Hagar, Van Hagar, Cabo Wabo, and Chickenfoot, they ain’t hurtin.
At least Sammy and Mike seem to still be enjoying themselves and having fun, not to mention making some pretty good music.
I hope your bride to be this month makes real good money because your gonna need it – oh yeah, I forgot, she works for you – more of that empire.
Sadly, you will never put out another relevant thing. Take a good long look at Michael Jackson Ed, (musically), because that’s where you are headed. DLR – god love ya man, it breaks my friggin heart – but I don’t think it will ever be possible to regain those diamond dave days, not with Ed at least.

I haven’t played Guitar Hero, but Rock Band is a great party game. You have entire band with drums, bass, and vocals, just not guitar. Beatles Rock Band is coming out soon. The trailer is very interesting. You’ll notice that they didn’t omit any band members. I’m glad the Beatles legacies could set aside their differences for the good of the product.

deano | 6/11/2009, 3:04 pm EST

This VH soap opera is getting as ridiculous as Kiss making Tommy Thayer and Eric Singer put on Ace Frehley’s and Peter Criss’ makeup. When will these old hacks all just give up and admit it’s over? And the dang record labels are no better — they can’t find any young guns that can rock as good and sell as well as the old dudes. Oh wait — they can all make money selling video games featuring our old music. Why try anything new?

At the point where EVH said that he didn’t want Anthony in the game, the folks at GH should have said – then why bother with a stand alone game.

basser | 6/11/2009, 5:53 pm EST

Man, Eddie needs to get happy. He just got married recently (she’s sweet, I’ve worked with her before during part of Van Halen’s 2007-08 tour), so you would think Eddie could bury the hatchet re: Anthony and Hagar. And people criticize The Who now for putting Moon and Entwistle on some – but not all – of the recent tour shirts, posters and buttons. Pete pays the families of Moon and Entwistle a lot of money to be able to still use vintage imagery on some of the recent tour’s artwork. Eddie and Alex don’t have to embrace ex VH members quite like that, but the dirt really should stop flying.

Gerald | 6/11/2009, 7:28 pm EST

Some supergroup Chickenfoot is..even with all the hype live concerts and tv apperances and big names involved they only sold 49k . That`s not called a supergroup thats called FAILED !! So. im sure we`ll hear from Sammy and Mike talking about Van Halen again to generate interest in there DOA band.No Eddie or Dave equals NO INTEREST HAHAHAHA

VAN HALEN MAN | 6/11/2009, 7:59 pm EST

Sammy and Mike should be left off the RockBand gam. I mean who cares about those two guy ?? I mean they could only sell 49k of there supergroups cd, how weak is that ?? Dave & Eddie are what sell not sammy and mike.

George Halen | 6/11/2009, 8:33 pm EST

Sadly, Eddie now has irreversible brain damage from alcoholism but he was a musical genius and I’d pay to see him play a ukelele if that’s what he were playing.

My preference: he play with Dave AND Sammy (bass player and drummer are really irelevant) and Dave drops the Neil Diamond shtick. Without any one of those three, VH as we know it does not exist.

Anthony seems to be the most sane and definitely the most humble of them all, but Sammy certainly seems easy enough to get along with. Alex seems to just be a lackey for Ed who defintely seems to be the problem (because of the aforementioned irreversably damaged brain).

Wolfie’s just a kid so I’ll just say that he could have a very bright future without the VH cover gig. Cherone, well, Extreme is back together, aren’t they?

Robert | 6/11/2009, 8:34 pm EST

To leave out Michael Anthony is a travesty. HE IS THE ORIGINAL BASSIST AND FOUNDING MEMBER. WTF? Do not buy this game. And for the record, Sammy is a million times better than David Lee Roth will ever be. Even when he wasnt in Van Halen, all Roth could talk about was Van Halen. Sammy was successful before, during and long after Van Halen. What did Roth do post Van Halen? Not a damn thing that was any good.

Fan Halen | 6/12/2009, 1:16 am EST

No way im gonna waste money on this game without Sammy and Mike.. some say Sammy and Mike didnt help make VanHalen? are you retarded? or just a bit slow.. 1984 was a great album with Mike and DLR included and when Sammy came along.. WOW! They made great albums.. Hell every song on every album they made together was good..

VanHalen Greatest Hits? if ya dont songs like Dreams, Humans Being, 5150, Right Now, Love walks in, Why Cant this be love, Cant stop lovin you and many more then to me thats not giving the consumer the Greatest of Van Halen.. I mean comon Damn.. put songs on these games that we can relate too… not crap that ya have to be 60 yrs old to remember.. lol If ya cant bringem all then dont waste ya time..

I love Eddie and Alex and DLR but if theyre keeping mikey and sammy out.. thats just plain stupid and disrespectful..

Mike Anthony deserves to be on there. Hagar, not so much. If they wanted to do a seperate GH with his songs so be it, but Van HALEN will always be the DLR, MA, Alex and Eddie. Not Wolfie- he is a REPLACEMENT until he pisses his dad off.
And to whoever said Van Hagar was better- get a grip.

As an older diehard fan of VH from clear back to the beginning…..I’m done with’em!
They’re no longer VH.
Wolfie is not VH.
I have no interest in hearing or even worse yet seeing him in a video game.
No Mike = no V.H.
Won’t spend a dime on their crap.
Really sad how little they care about the fans or past band members.
You SUCK Eddie.

Matt | 6/12/2009, 12:14 pm EST

This could’ve been a very cool game, but Eddie and his overinflated ego has to go and fuck it up. Go on making the same mistakes over and over.

Hey Ed, when are you actually going to RELEASE SOME NEW MUSIC? That’s what musicians do, you know?

LoopGuru | 6/12/2009, 1:38 pm EST

Eddie really blew the obvious chance to make something for ALL VH fans bu putting ALL past and present members on the game and letting the player choose which ones to use…that way EVERYONE got the VH they wanted! God knows it would be the first time in decades that he would have been able to make everyone happy at the same time… dumbass.

Buzzramjet | 6/12/2009, 2:57 pm EST

Eddie has to be considered clinically insane and his brother is just an idiot who parrots whatever his brother says, no intelligence there at all.

Leaving out Michael is without a doubt the most selfish, egotistical, meanspirited thing I have ever heard of in the music biz even more so than Credence and John.

Personally I’m not getting it for that one reason and I can only hope the game is boycotted.

As well everyone knows Wolfie didn’t play but was fake playing, there is video on Youtube showing him goofing off on the bass while real bass lines are heard through the speakers. Wolfie and Eddie are frauds now.

vanfan4life63 | 6/12/2009, 5:22 pm EST

the game is gonna suck. i will not buy it. and vanhalen if they ever make a cd. i will buy it. but not the game. 50 buck and no songs i like and you can’t play as sammy or mike. mike was a intrigal part of the band. and eddie spits in the fans face. what a friggin retard eddie is. god he needs help.

Joe Voodoo | 6/12/2009, 6:51 pm EST

The Van Halen Camp I heard is also re-recording the Bass Tracks with Wolfie so as that Michael Anthony doesn’t get any royalties from the game. This is not only a slap in the face to Mike but to Van Halen fans. Give Mikey his due.

It would of been great to have a Celebration of Van Halen on this game. Half Roth and Half Hagar and half Wolfie and Half Mike. Hell even Gary Cherone should be in there for about 2 tracks.

Really though, time to get getting quick money schemes, overpriced tour tickets and MAKE A NEW ALBUM. I use to love getting a new V.H. album and immediately wanting to hear more! Remember when it was about the MUSIC and not the money! Hmmm, seems a new band called Chickenfoot is enjoying CREATING music than glorifying there bank accounts on a Video game!

Guitarist... | 6/12/2009, 7:05 pm EST

The debate who is better in the Van Halen Roth vs. Hagar era is a done subject. They are both good but different. Both Rock but in different ways. When did music become so competitive? I thought that was up to sports teams while musicians are to express music. Unfortunately ego’s do get involved. But really there is no trophy to win. People are bag’n on the new Chickenfoot Band. Why? It’s different, they are not trying to “compete” with Van Halen, they are just what they are suppossed to be doing… Getting energized, giddy and excited about… MUSIC! Not a video game! And those who post there Guitar Hero Skills on Youtube. STOP and pick up a guitar instead.

Keep up the bad work..Sorry, I don’t buy that “Wolfgang” (another egomaniacal act, naming you kid that) can play Mikes stuff, and GUARANTEE they will have to have someone come in to write and record new bass tracks for any new material…like we will ever see any…How are these guys still relevant, anyway? No new music in countless years (VH# does’t count for anything) and front covers of Rolling stone, Guitar player, ect? I don’t know anyone who plays guitar that respects or cares what EVH is doing these days. Hey, he may be a great guy, but man, from this distance he looks really bad as a human bieng.

uhhh.. I guess you guys don’t know how to read. Chickenfoot is #4 on the billboard 200, not number 6. And Eminem only sold 141,000 copies of his new one. Album sales as a whole are down 15% this month…. bad economy remember. If you haven’t heard it.. Chickenfoot rocks!

Ed | 6/13/2009, 1:26 am EST

uuuh i guess you don`t know how to read, eminem sold 608,000 in his first week and dmb just sold 424,000 in their first week..Chickenfoot sold 49,000 in their first week..I don`t think cd sales are down as a whole just down when it comes to Chickenfoot.I think your figures about eminem selling 141,000 are his sales for his 3rd or 4th week out. Shows you how bad sales were for the foot.as you can see sammy and mike wont be missed in the new game or by the fans.

Mike | 6/13/2009, 11:06 am EST

I can’t believe this!

RyLow85 | 6/13/2009, 11:24 am EST

Only 3 days of the Chickenfoot album sales are accounted for on this weeks chart as it was released on a Friday and charts run Monday through Sunday.Next weeks chart will account this previous weeks sales.

Dave | 6/13/2009, 12:31 pm EST

I love how all the Sammy fans try to explain why Chickenfoot the so called supergroup can`t sell cd`s.Next weeks sale will just show that they sold less than the week before.Even with Chickenfoots months of pre hype sold out tour and guitar magazine covers and a prime spot on Conans and a string of radio and television interviews they flopped BIGTIME.

Chain | 6/13/2009, 12:38 pm EST

Obviously if Chickenfoot is #4 this week then the theory that the first week sales were only Fr-Monare true.

and being a longtime Van Halen/Hagar fan, I am pissed at this report. Good job re-writing history for those of us that stuck with you for years and loved ALL the stuff.

Idiot. I’m done with him.

yeah #4 on the charts in 3 days qualifies as a “big time” flop. I just stick with the facts like what I said before and I’ll say that the fact is you are a moron.

RyLow85 | 6/13/2009, 2:52 pm EST

It’ not like this hasn’t happened to others as well, Green Day and Metallica would have had huge opening weeks had they started on tuesday’s but they started on friday’s and sold between 200-000, and 400,000 in 3 days granted much bigger than chickenfoot but Metallica and Green Day are 2 of the biggest names in rock.

RyLow85 | 6/13/2009, 2:53 pm EST

by the way Dave are you DLR?

overmatik | 6/13/2009, 3:01 pm EST

Van Halen is a joke now. Chickenfoot rocks!

dave | 6/13/2009, 3:49 pm EST

haha..still trying to justify why chickenfoot flopped .. face it dude no one cares about sammy or mike any more and even less will care about them next week..but people still care about eddie and dave over 90 million bucks on a tour all the sammy fans said would`nt last last pass 2 shows..oh yeah right..i`m dlr lol

Anonymous | 6/13/2009, 4:31 pm EST

I still like old Van Halen but I’m not holding my breath for any new stuff from dave and eddie, and I can’t wait to see Chickenfoot live.

ED | 6/14/2009, 6:04 am EST

chickenfoot/ Who are they. Your dads band?

Ed | 6/14/2009, 6:05 am EST

Who are chickenfoot? Seriously never heard of them.

D | 6/14/2009, 7:26 am EST

Chickenfoot? More like Chickenshit. The band sucks.

The Mynx | 6/14/2009, 4:28 pm EST

Chickenfoot are #4 with only 3 days’ worth of sales behind them. Hell, if they were on sale for a whole week, they’d be #2.

People dig this band and this music. EVH can go screw himself.

Tommy | 6/14/2009, 8:52 pm EST

Van Halen’s disregard for their fans is disgraceful and replacing a seasoned performer with a high school kid is outright embarassing. Van Halen will never get another cent from me.

As far as Chickenfoot goes, it’s not a great album by any stretch of the imagination, but at least it is something. The next VH album is taking as long as Chinese Democracy and I am pretty confident it will just as bad as well. VH RIP.

Jon | 6/15/2009, 1:54 am EST

I’ve had it up to here with EVH. First he took Michael Anthony’s picture of their album covers on their website. And he continues to crap on a founding member who not only played on every Van Halen album, but also responds with nothing less than class. Eddie may be a musical genius, but he’s also a self absorbed bitter old man. I refuse to put any more money in his pocket.

David Gee | 6/15/2009, 4:21 am EST

Van Halen are such assholes. I hope sales of this game tank.

Me Fan | 6/15/2009, 8:59 pm EST

Mike and Sammy…no doubt very talented musicians… but this is all about reviving our memories about a great band. Without a doubt, mistakes have been made in the management of all the careers involved… but who here hasn’t done things they wish they could take back. But these are rock and rollers… do what you want when you want…I truly admire Eddie for developing his guitar… Dave for driving the emergency van… Sammy for bottling some tequila… they do what they want…I think that’s wonderful… I sure as hell ain’t going to have anyone tell me how to manage my personal career and life… They don’t have any obligation to me or anyone else… Essentially, Guitar Hero is about ME…if I can relive the memories of my youth with a plastic guitar… and stand up in front of my TV and pretend to be Eddie… hell I’m there…!!!

xD | 6/16/2009, 11:45 pm EST

THEY BETTER HAVE ERUPTION

Adamius | 6/17/2009, 3:48 am EST

All the members should have been included, they could even put the pathetic third lead singer in as an unlockable. Saying DLR never did anything good outside of VH is just untrue. Yankee Rose, Just Like Paradise, Just a Gigolo, California Girls, Going Crazy (From the Heat)…what were all those? Hagar only had one hit outside of VH: “55″. I don’t say that to diss Sammy, but to shut up all the people dissing on Diamond Dave. Maybe you do have to be a little older to remember Dave TV, but those of us that do remember why VH wasn’t just a great band, but a revolutionary band against the backdrop they popped up against. Dave and Eddie MADE VH great. Sammy continued to KEEP VH great. Both of those should be recognized.

scrape | 6/17/2009, 8:22 pm EST

No Van Hagar in Guitar Hero is the smartest move they made!

Joe | 6/18/2009, 8:19 am EST

Sammy and Mike quit the band. Why would they be featured in the game??

That’s like coming up with a new NBA game and featuring SHAQ on the LA Lakers.

yleekiyote | 6/18/2009, 9:43 am EST

Alot of crybabies here. I guess most of the folks here seemed to have forgotten that Dave (Diamond David Lee Roth) QUIT THE BAND to pursue his solo act. To make matters worst, he tried to steal the “Van Halen” name because he felt “He was the voice of VH”, and took them to court. How foolish is that? And now Sammy has become the scapegoat for Eddie’s failures of drinking and his drug addiction. Since Mikey worked well with Sammy, Ego Eddie dissed him as well and decided to teach Wolfgang the bass parts. Is this REALLY about the music or the mighty dollar folks? Eddie doesn’t care for the fans of VH. He dissed all songs after 1984 as if they didn’t exist. I’m sure he has those platnium albums hanging in his mansion right now. I’m sure his bank account shows that extra money that Sam helped him achieve while he was in the band. HE made the decision to hire and fire Sammy. Sammy has at least been professional enough to go out on record and say “If ever he wanted me, I was there”. I never heard anything mentioned from Ed about that. This last tour was about money as he didn’t really have to pay Wolfgang since he is his son. My guess is in about 5 years or so, Wolfie will sue his dad for the past royalties owed and VH will be dead, all thanks to Ego Ed. If VH is not for the fans, then Ed is looking for all the money now. Dave was working as Radio DJ, and got canned after a few weeks. He worked as an Ambulance assistant, and who knows what else he had to do to earn an income. Where did his music talent go to? Steve Via couldn’t wait to leave the group. So Dave would be washing Eddie’s clothes just to make a living right now.

To me, Eddie has sold out VH for ever by not attending the HOF. When Mike and Sammy are there to accept the award and be honest by saying thanks back to Ed, Alex, and Dave for what VH meant, that meant it was from the heart. No reason why Alex or Dave could not be there. Because they were under strict orders from Alcoholic Ed to not attend.

yleekiyote | 6/18/2009, 10:46 am EST

One more thing I wanted to add, for all those believers out there that Wolfie played the bass lines to all the songs, you know Ed is a smart enough man to put down the bass parts for Wolfie to follow along with. I don’t know about you, but when you are playing bass or guitar, you can hit a sour note very easily. Reports were that Ed was hitting a few sour notes during the tour. It’s amazing that Wolfie nailed all of his? It’s called “technology” folks. Much like the way Geddy Lee from Rush can play keyboard parts while Alex can play guitar and each of them can play the bass pedals to any song.

To the Chickenfoot bashers, do what you must. The music is fresh and yes, It’s not as enjoyable as I would have liked, but at least they are out there having fun with the fans and hanging out. Yes Halen was great when their first album came out. Just about everyone sounds great on the first album because they had a whole lifetime to write it. When Roth left the band, Ed wanted Sammy, so that decision lied on your savior folks. At any time after 5150, For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge,& OU812, Eddie could have pulled the rip cord and gotten rid of Sam. Prior to Balance, everything was fine until Ed started slamming Sam for his time. Sam didn’t write the music and could have done the guitar parts, but sat out of the mix, which I thought was the reason was to have two great guitarist in a single band. So history was made and all the Roth fans bash Sam for what Ed wanted him to do. That is fricken funny because if Sam wasn’t the choice for Ed, who would have been then? VH could have ended right there.

Stop living in the glory days folks, this “new” band will not ever become the band it once was, not even close. Their tour made money because ticket prices were higher, so what? They sold t-shirts and booklets to help bring in that money. They got to see the soap opera called Van Halen, where Dave and Ed kiss and make up because he can not admit that Sam was right. When GH comes out and has poor sales, Ed will probably swallow his pride and release the Hagar years GH, which will show a better sale but still, who wants to give Ed their hard earned money for a game? I sure in the hell will not. My kids will not either.

vegas81 | 6/18/2009, 1:15 pm EST

YLEEKIYOTE, Man do you have your facts all wrong. Just about everything you say is twisted in some way. By the way Dave still got paid for his full contract term as a D.J. and he didn’t “work” as a paramedic, he was a volunteer,he wanted to see what it was all about since members of his family work in the medical field and his Dad was a doctor, Dave has never been broke. I understand Eddie is a control-freak, prick but take it for what it is. Don’t support them by not going to their concerts and purchasing their music or support them. Bottom line none of us can control what Ed,Dave,Mike or anyone else does, I still love both bands because the music is what it is all about.

vegas81 | 6/18/2009, 1:17 pm EST

You guys over analize everything and take it personally…..

Big John | 6/18/2009, 1:36 pm EST

I am tired of all the narrow-minded VH fans who know nothing abuot Sammy Hagar, saying he was nothing without VH.
Besides his massively influential Montrose days (yes, even VH admitted it was influential and even took “ideas” from the record), Sammy’s resume includes:

Hagar’s breakthrough album arrived in 1981, “Standing Hampton” climbed the U.S. Pop chart reaching the #28 position and generated a string of hits including: “I’ll Fall In Love Again” which peaked at #2 on The Mainstream Rock chart, “There’s Only One Way To Rock” reached #31, chart.
Title-song to the soundtrack of the film “Fast Times At Ridgemont High”, the track reached the #21 slot on The Mainstream Rock chart.
“Your Love Is Driving Me Crazy”, peaked at #13 in U.S. Pop chart, soared to the #3 spot on The Rock Tracks chart Mainstream Rock hit singles: the #6 “Remember The Heroes” and the top 30 “I Don’t Need Love” as well as “Never Give Up” which entered the top 50 of the Official Pop Singles chart.

“I Can’t Drive 55″ which climbed into the top 30 of The Billboard Hot 100 and peaked at #9 on The Mainstream Rock “Two Sides Of Love”, also made top 40 on the same charts.
Active Rock #1 single “Give To Live”, which also peaked at #23 on The Billboard Hot 100; The Mainstream Rock Tracks chart with “Winner Takes It All”, used for the soundtrack to the Sylvester Stallone movie “Over The Top”.
“Marching To Mars” 11-song set peaked at #18 on The Billboard 200 Albums chart, it yielded the Active Rock chart-topping “Little White Lie”, plus the title-track, which rose to #3 and “Both Sides Now” peaked at #11 on The Mainstream Rock list.

the smash single “Mas Tequila”, which peaked at #2 on The Mainstream Rock chart; the second single, “Shag”, reached #22 on the same chart.

Active Rock top 10 hit “Serious Ju Ju” and “Let Sally Drive” which reached #16 on The Mainstream Rock list.

Let that go against VH with Roth. One #1 song – “Jump”.

Come on!

tony | 6/18/2009, 3:14 pm EST

this is another thing that should embarass a true vh fan. they sold as many or more cds with hagar than with DLR. Eddies ego is out of hand.

Joe | 6/18/2009, 6:16 pm EST

Big John- that was a dumb post you spent a lot of time on.

All that stuff means nothing. Being in Van Halen greatly helped Sammy and Dave’s career.

Regardless of all the stats, Van Halen with Dave is really what Van Halen was all about.

Son of Bob | 6/19/2009, 12:09 am EST

Eddie needs to grow up. As far as EVERYONE was concerned, Van Halen has always been a BAND…not just Eddie and Alex.

Michael Anthony was a huge part of VH, and his high harmonies were part of their signature sound. When they parted ways with Sammy, he kept it classy…Eddie did not. The whole “Let’s pretend Michael quit the band so my fat son can join” deal has been a farce. Screwing Sammy out of the GH deal is dumb, but pretending that the kid has always been there and that Michael Anthony wasn’t part of the driving force of this band is ridiculous. Seems that the Van Halen brothers need to grow up. Really classless.

Joe | 6/19/2009, 8:26 am EST

Thinking like Son of Bob…..

Jerry West, Kareem, Magic, and Shaq should all have been on the current LA Lakers roster and should all be giving 2009 championships rings because they all played an important part in the history of the Lakers.
Brett Favre should always be featured on the Packers and Jets because he played his part there.
Instead of advertising The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien, it should be The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, Jay Leno, and Conan O’Brien. Because Johnny and Jay played such a big part on the show.

yleekiyote | 6/19/2009, 10:13 am EST

Vegas81, I couldn’t agree with you more about the music, but my comment about Dave quiting the band and then later trying to steal the Van Halen name is a fact, look it up. He got laughed out of court because his ideas of becoming a solo artist flopped. Outside of Eat Em And Smile and a few decent tunes on Skyscraper, he ran out of material. His Just A Giggilo was a remake, along with the Beach Boy’s California Girls got him started. I understand he got paid for replacing Stern but it wasn’t his fault that 75% of the audience went out and bought Sirius radios and turned off the FM radio. But the guy made a decision and his ego showed what VH was. Eddie was happy when Dave left and Sammy took over. Ed wrote the music as Sam wrote the lyrics. Why is Ed complaining now about Sam’s involvement? If I see a trainwreck about to happen, I will at least do my part and save someone. Why spend 15 years of your life with someone if you didn’t like them? All I am saying is Ed has become the same illness and he is pointing the blame at Sam and Mike for the destruction of VH. He makes excuses for not showing up to the HOF, your once in a lifetime induction because of his ego. That is how you reward your true hardcore fans, by spitting in their faces. They made you and created you by paying for your records and THIS is how he repays them. We agreed, he is a prick, but the facts are still there that Dave is not the savior of this band now, with Ed still callinig the shots, and dissing Mike from all albums and cutting from the royalties. You can have him, I’m done with VH.

Austin | 6/22/2009, 5:00 pm EST

Guys look at the positives… I’m actually not that angry, I mean if they had Sammy in the game and they didn’t have Roth that would be terrible we can all agree, be thankful we have Roth instead of Sammy, it would be nice to have both, Van Hagar was good but not great, the only Sammy songs I like are ‘Dreams’ and ‘Why Can’t This Be Love,’ and both are in my Top Ten. And having Eddie’s son be the bass player, is lame but atleast 3/4 are original members. And if Sammy was in the game that would leave out more classic DLR era songs, and I would rather have DLR songs than Hagar songs. This is just reality and we have to deal with it, arguing won’t solve anything. I know I’m sounding like the peacemaker, but give it up! I’m gonna buy it so I can play 25 classic Van Halen songs. Think of it this way, what if we had the modern technology today in the late 80’s/early 90’s, and this game was coming out with Eddie still hating DLR, then we would have Sammy in the game and no Roth at all and almost all the songs being from the Van Hagar era, and that would be way worse. I’m not trying to bash Sammy in any way, I love his music and is doing great solo, but I’m going to buy this game with or without Sammy. I only wish that they would just release this game in a way that would make everyone happy.

vanhalendlrband | 6/23/2009, 4:13 pm EST

Finally the REAL Van Halen fans get some justice for all the years of hell we went through with Sammy and Gary fans trashing David Lee Roth!

Well tough guys, the fan base that made VAN HALEN THE NUMBER 1 TOUR IN NORTH AMERICA DESTROYING THE 2004 VAN HAGAR TOUR IN SELLOUTS is rising up. Rising up against the BS that is the other 2 eras of Van Halen.

Thank god Guitar Hero Van Halen isn’t rotten with 20 Van Hagar love songs.

The other era fans just can’t stand the fact that the DLR era is FAR FAR MORE POPULAR WORLDWIDE AND IN EACH AND EVERY COUNTRY ON ITS OWN CITY TOWN VILLAGE AND TRIBE IS SO MUCH MORE SUCCESSFUL!

Can’t wait for the new album that will probably be DLC for GH:5, its going to be so awesome. The best part about the game is no Sammy or whineass Micheal Anthony.

Anonymous | 6/24/2009, 12:57 am EST

What the hell are they thinking??? So you’re to tell me that Eddie Van Halen is just going to ignore a good run with Sammy Hagar as the vocalist just because they’ve had a falling out? There were some good songs during that era!! Is he not even proud of the work he did on those songs?? And Michael Anthony was one of the founding members for God’s sake!!! What an assy thing to do to leave him off of this thing! I think that they could have used Mike AND Wolfgang in the game… You don’t have to exclude one to include the other! This is a highly disturbing and depressing turn of events…. This is just tragic! I love Van Halen’s music but I can’t believe that more than half of it won’t even be featured! Does Eddie not even have any pride about the songs he made with Sammy and Mike??? Those years where VH had success with Sammy can’t override Eddie’s personal feelings enough for him to include them for the game? I am one VERY unhappy fan. This is shit!

Anonymous | 6/24/2009, 1:17 am EST

I love B-man’s comment, it’s absolutely perfect! Eddie needs to get over himself…

Austin | 6/25/2009, 5:45 pm EST

Does anyone know Eddie personally so me or someone could call him up and just tell him to put Sammy and Mike in the game, does he realize that he’s making tons of people mad? The fans just want a awesome Van Halen experience, does Eddie want that? Obviously not. Good guitarist but very self-centered.

Austin | 6/25/2009, 5:52 pm EST

mike isnt in it?thats just wrong.

Mike | 7/21/2009, 11:01 am EST

Im a fan of both Van Halen eras. Im was really looking forward to rocking out with both Sammy and DAvid…and both of their tunes.

samson | 7/23/2009, 8:54 am EST

screw this game… Dreams would have been a kick butt song to play, with the solo’s and the singing. Sometimes I wonder why bands cant let go of their childish hate towards certain people. Think of all the famous bands that split or had fallouts. Journey, GNR, Styx, are just to name a few. Eddie needs to get over himself and just include the one song that sammy is recognized for and thats “Dreams”.

bluray | 7/24/2009, 11:35 pm EST

Mikes not in it because he wasnt around, nor was sammy. ed fell back on dlr because he didnt have a choice. sam and mike were up against a hard line drunk (and druggy there for awhile) mike didnt hang around 5150 as a punching bag and wanted to go where the fun is (and life) so he followed sammy who sure as hell wasnt going to stay around that mess. ed hit bottom kiddies, harder than you can imagine (back then)

DLRVH | 7/25/2009, 5:47 pm EST

You all need a clue the real Van Halen Is Roth Not Hagar! Sorry bout Mike. Really sad bout that but at least they got the music and front man right.

DLRVH | 7/25/2009, 7:52 pm EST

I read some of the other responses and on thing became clear to me… If it were not for Roth there would be no Sammy. No doubt Roth Helped drive VH to 1984 and Sammy beyond that. And by the way VH 1 and 1984 are still two of the most selling albums ever. Do not take that as Sammy is not a talent because he is… Roth just Rocks harder. Period.

Stiv | 7/27/2009, 12:49 pm EST

Yet another Van Halen product I’ll not both with.

Wolfie wasn’t even a wet spot on Eddie’s jeans when MICHAEL was helping him, his brother and Dave create the legacy that is the Van Halen music that will be remembered in years to come.

van halen fan | 7/28/2009, 12:29 pm EST

A good thing about just putting the Roth era on this game is that’s where all the crazy guitar solos and rocking out took place. The Van Hagar era had keyboards and synthesizers, and tons of love songs. It wouldn’t be called “Guitar” Hero, if it didn’t have any guitar playing in it. And nobody plays guitar hero to here a bunch of love stuff.

Angel | 8/6/2009, 1:43 pm EST

As far as I knew, true Van Halen fans didn’t like the Hagar era. Hmm… But what would I know. I wasn’t alive until 1988 anyhow.

Regardless, I’m not a hardcore Van Halen fan, so I’ll have plenty of fun playing these songs. It’s not like buying a CD or something… it’s a friggin game. Guitar Hero has plenty of remade songs for their games.

I understand the disrespect, but for those of us who aren’t sincerely devoted Van Halen fans, this game will be lots of fun.

Van Halen Fan 100 | 8/6/2009, 7:49 pm EST

This game looks good, I am a big fan of both eras but if they included both, there would be less sogns from the Roth years and meaning, less of Roths hits would be in, but since they didnt include Hagar, there is more Roth Songs. Dave also has a more hard rock feel with as little synthesizers as possible and a lot of guitar solos. So a possibility is GH: Van Halen 2, it sounds corny, could be a complete mess, and probably wont happen, but that is way to get Sammy and Mike in the game, but it really is just a video game and depends on how well GH: Van Halen sells.

Bob | 8/7/2009, 9:44 pm EST

Is Gary Cherone in the game?

UGH! Michael isn’t in the game. That sucks. WHAT???? HAGAR ISN’T EITHER! What’s wrong with Eddie? They were pals! Come on! Dreams had an awesome concluding solo, that would have fit in the game….Yet it isn’t in the game……. UGH I might not buy it. The next game they should make SHOULD have Anthony and Hagar. THEY SHOULD MAKE A LIFE SCENE. LIKE 1977-1984 (Roth years)Gary Cherone next, and in 1986, SAMMY should come. Then they break up again till Roth reunion in 2007. *Sigh* Yet they make this game that has other bands. SO IT ISN’T JUST VAN HALEN: GUITAR HERO. Did you see the trailer? Weezer is in the game. Man, what kind of crap is that!!?? Sad….soooo Sad. The next Guitar Hero game should be a good band. Like Rush, Journey, Styx, Night Ranger, Dokken, any 80’s or 70’s bands……

Jimmy | 8/17/2009, 6:43 pm EST

um too all the people saying whats wrong with Sammy not being in VH, remember Sammy and Eddie after the fall out with Sammy’s son being born and Eddie demanding Sammy to come back to Cali from Hawii to Record tracks because ” eddie was ready” just shows how people for get their history and why some people might not want to be related to VH anymore, I know from history Eddie may be a great guitarist, but personally working with him, f*** that hes a d**k

lil boo | 8/23/2009, 11:16 am EST

sammy sooooooooo should be on it coz david lee fuckin shit roth is nothing compared to hagar, so there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

nick 5150 | 8/25/2009, 8:22 am EST

The fact is Vh sold more records with Hagar than..the Roth Era ever did.. I like Dave, but he doesn’t have his voice anymore..so how far they can go with this is questionable. Also, Mikey was in the Band for over 25 yrs and for eddie not to include him..Is down right wrong! I Still love VH, but what they did to Mikey is wrong and eddie needs to get his head out of his ass! They must add the hagar stuff to the GH!

hi | 8/28/2009, 8:17 pm EST

HOlY GOD! how can you want a guitar hero Styx or Dokken? gh Van halen will be the pinacle of music videogaming, regardless of whether Sammy and Michael Anthony are in it or not.

Because Styx and Dokken has bad a** solos. So there. TAKE THAT.

People will still buy the game. People “have” to have it for their status among friends. Boycotts would work if people actually got behind them. To me the band without something from all era’s in a no go and I won’t be buying it. Now if 3-5 million people did the same thing then someone at the other end would get the message. And another thing. If you can’t fill up a game with only the band on the label then don’t bother making the game. Ever wonder why those copies of Guitar Hero: Aerosmith still sit all dusty in the bargain bin for $19.99? Something to think about when you spend you money on your next game.

I concur… All thos bands you mentioned my friend were amazing. At the very least, make solid DLC with those bands. You know, the one’s who actually had killer guitar work involved. Seriously Guitar Hero So Called Developers, Enough of the euro crap and the alternative garbage… Follow rock bands lead to a degree and LISTEN TO THE PEOPLE WHO BUY YOUR CRAPPY REHASHED GAMES FOR A CHANGE… Better music would help the franchise considerably… At this rate the next game from them is gonna be “Guitar Hero 6 : One Hit Wonders (God help us all)…

They are using the CURRENT lineup of the band! That makes sense. Former members are not shown. They are NOT being “left out”!! They just are not in the band now! Did you expect to see 7 people on stage???

And Van Halen is showing RESPECT by not doing Sammy songs with Dave on this game!

Eddie_Van_Halen's_Friend | 9/8/2009, 11:31 pm EST

Alright! I’ll get the game. I’m just scared cuz Eruption is on the game. LOL. Hope so much it’s on expert mode. THAT will be a big challenge.

What a smack in the face to real van halen fans?
I liked both eras Dave and Sammy. You are going to tell me Judgement Day, Poundcake, 5150, Sucker in a 3 Piece, Don’t Tell just to mention a few don’t rock out as much if not more than any of those on that playlist.
Give me a break…….. thsi game is crap

Sorry I really liked VH (Don’t take me wrong, EVH is great) but I dare him to beat Joe’s rocking. Will keep VH1 and other stuff as great work – personally I do like Humans Being among the rest, and not very much the mellow songs – but CHICKENFOOT IS the band, maybe when VH GH gets down to bargain price will buy it but just for good time and the memories

The best revenge is being better: Chickenfoot will rock their way up as a band

Dave | 9/20/2009, 1:49 pm EST

This is a travesty. You DON’T CHANGE HISTORY! Eddie’s ego knows no limits. Michael Anthony was a key part of Van Halen. Wolfgang has no stage presence as was handed the job… pure nepotism. Did EVH think that fans would be ok with this? Does he forget that we fans made him the rich man he is today?

Unbelievable.

WhyCan'tThisBeLove | 10/14/2009, 2:14 pm EST

I for one am not buying Guitar Hero: Van Halen . . . I’m getting it for free for buying Guitar Hero 5. I wouldn’t pay money for anything without either Sammy or Mike and having a Van Halen name stamped on it. I wasn’t much of a fan of Chickenfoot’s CD. I hope they’re next one has better songs.

i have guitar hero van halen now, and the game is great. It’s still a fun game even without michael anthony, but now I don’t even want to get near the Bass career, because of of Wolfgang. It feels like it’s 25 years in the past when you unlock their classic costumes. The tracklist is incredible, and it looks and sounds great!! Every Van Halen or Guitar Hero fan should own the game, if you have your doubts just rent it, then see if it’s worth buying. (I got it from the GH5 offer)

I’ve always been a huge VH fan. But I just can’t take any more disappointments from these guys. Eddie always seems to be at the center of every controversy….and I’m sure it’s because of drugs, alcohol, whatever.

I don’t even care about the new game now. There’s always a tinge of hatefulness coming out from Eddie and Alex. Always. They could have put out 4 or 5 new albums over the past decade. What did we get? Squat.

“Eddie’s got 100 songs in the can, ready to record”. Um….no. He doesn’t. That rumor has been going for 10 years.

Their music was great but I wish they would either go away or come out with something new…and if it’s the latter, then do it with some class and dignity and act like Sammy and Dave actually meant something to you and the band. It’s all so sad now.

Got the game through GH’s free offer (with purchase of GH 5). Played a bit before I realized that the last 25 years had been left out. As has been stated over and over, this just doesn’t make sense. Very disappointed, and I certainly wouldn’t pay money for this game.

Nicolas Goles | 11/14/2009, 8:24 pm EST

Very disappointed too, no Sammy Hagar ? Damn, this sux.
