Behind the Jonas Brothers’ World Tour 2009: Photos, Video and More

6/8/09, 1:24 pm EST

The Jonas Brothers have promised their World Tour 2009 will be their biggest spectacle yet — a massive trek featuring an in-the-round stage, a host of additional musicians and a few stunning surprises — so with just two weeks to go before the June 20th launch in Arlington, Texas, Rolling Stone popped into the band’s Dallas rehearsals to get a first-hand look. (Click above to watch the band chat about their eye-popping plans and a first glimpse at the new stage.)

“Putting this show together is so much different than anything we’ve ever done before,” Nick Jonas tells us. “We wanted a great way for everyone to have a front-row seat,” Kevin adds, noting, “You might have to come more than once to see it all because you might not catch it all.” Joe says that “Much Better” is a definite highlight: “It’s like a dance party onstage.” Get the full story behind the show in our rehearsal report here.

Plus, check out photos of the Jonas Brothers onstage and backstage in their little rehearsal space — the American Airlines Arena. Our cameras captured the band singing and testing out special new light effects (the show boasts 350 lighting units and requires 19 trucks to cart all the gear around), and more relaxed candid moments of the Jonas Brothers just being themselves — Nick chatting with bodyguard Big Rob and playing ping-pong; Joe trolling around on a Segway; Kevin hopping up and down on a trampoline; the band’s spread of healthy munchies. It’s also your first look at the band’s new stage, which practically stretches from one end of the arena to the other.

What? No pics of any of the Jonas Brothers taking a dump or leak backstage? Or any of them picking their noses? Those would be more realistic of what they do in their spare time than the pics shown in that link.

Also I know who the “stunning surprise” guest will be. Its none other than Mickey Mouse who will come out on stage and dance up a storm and throw out some promo t-shirts into the audience for all the little boys and girls. Damn, this will be a can’t miss performance!

RS1234 | 6/8/2009, 2:32 pm EST

This is ABSOLUTELY PATHETIC Rolling Stone, thanks for taking all of your journalistic integrity and throwing it all out of the window. since when did you start covering the Jonas Brothers? Really? I can still remember when you where only covering real artists like Pearl Jam, and The Black Crowes. What Happened? SHAME ON YOU ROLLING STONE!

vh | 6/8/2009, 2:50 pm EST

um, they were on the cover last year? bye.

ouch | 6/8/2009, 3:01 pm EST

dang these comments are harsh. haha.

Tim | 6/8/2009, 3:22 pm EST

No need to bash them they are young and doing well. I’m sure Pearl Jam has some detracters like yourself.

Green Collar | 6/8/2009, 3:31 pm EST

Yeah, I love how RS is all over them like white on rice now, then a few years from now when they’re a bunch of has-beens, RS is gonna make fun of them. You just jump on the bandwagon of the hottest trend, then hop off when it’s no longer in. You guys are so transparent, it’s sad.

Gwen | 6/8/2009, 3:32 pm EST

wow.. people are beyond rude and disrespectful.

remember that they are a company and they need money…so they report on whats most popular..its what sells so shut up or else there will be no rolling stone.

ps. the Jonas Brothers are awesome and i am so glad that they are in Rolling Stone again.

jules | 6/8/2009, 3:45 pm EST

Musical snobbery is sickening. Believe it or not, music is a personal thing and just because what sounds good to someone else doesn’t sound good to you does not make it bad. Too assume that your taste in music is the only type of good music is beyond arrogant. Yeah, they might be with Disney but they work hard like any other musician. The musical arrogance some people have is just sad. So you don’t think someone is as good as another artist? Well that’s your opinion, but you have to give due credit where credit is due. These guys work their asses off, even if in the end it’s only to make a shit load of money for Mickey. People need to get off the pedestals. Let people like what they like and if you don’t like it, accept that other people do and just because you don’t doesn’t make it universally awful music.

MRS JOE JONAS | 6/8/2009, 4:05 pm EST

STFU .. the jonas brothers are amaazing .. and get this into y’all little heads .. they do music and they’re famous , gone double platinium and probably sold out most of their shows i mean the burning up tour made 62 million ( check it ), they have tons of fans and not only teenies or a bunch they have a really mature fan base aswell , won ALOT of awards and nominated for grammy in their early age i mean the youngest is just 16 , and they earn 25 millions per year if not more !! and what do y’all haters have .. NOTHING so quit bashing on them they do alot for their fans and these boys will NEVER fade they are amaaazing i mean it’s their what 4th time or 3rd on RS !! so when you get to half of where they are or been throught all of the tours and rumors and paparazzi shit y’all could talk about them

Carolyn | 6/8/2009, 4:06 pm EST

I completely agree with joules and Gwen. You don’t like these boys and their music? That’s fine but there is no need to be an asshole and attack them. Some people are seriously pathetic.
The Jonas Brothers are musically talented, they are promising young musicians. I’m going to a concert on this tour and I’m very excited.

Lilian | 6/8/2009, 4:12 pm EST

Jeez. People are ignorant sometimes. You know, people have their own taste in music. These boys are young, they’re talented, wheather you like it or not. Hating them is not going to make them disappear. Yes they are teen idols, but i bet you too had a teen idol or an artist you admired when you were young. No need to hate on them that much.

Sophie | 6/8/2009, 4:21 pm EST

I bet you people have idols right? you have people that you admire that you like and that you listen to regularly. What would you feel like if i someone insulted them? if they told you that they suck? I bet you would say something like: “what?? are you kidding me? shut up, he’s awesome, etc etc” yup, i think you see my point here. People have their own inspiration, you should not be criticizing these boys, you cannot expect them to be as great as some out there, for Christ’s sake, they’re just getting started with their carrer! i they they deserve better than that.

Vegas | 6/8/2009, 4:35 pm EST

“The Jonas Brothers are musically talented, they are promising young musicians”. Ha-ha, yeah right. Keyboard Cat on YouTube has more talent in one paw than Disney’s version of the Three Stooges put together. Look, if you idolize the Jonases, then that’s fine, you’re entitled to like whatever you want to like, but try to remember that this is Rolling Stone, not the Jonas Bros Fan Forum, so you can’t tell us to shove it with our critiques. The same way you’re entitled to profess your eternal love for the JoBros, we’re equally entitled to point out how much they suck. If you love them so much, then our criticisms shouldn’t affect the way you feel about them, right?

deano | 6/8/2009, 4:44 pm EST

It’s been about 13 minutes, Jonas boys. The clock’s ticking …

BACKDAFUPOK | 6/8/2009, 4:52 pm EST

Y’all need to just back up with all the hate. Y’all haters make me sick and need to take a hatecation in your hatercopter, flying over cape haterous, drinkin your hateraide and eating some hatertots

mackie | 6/8/2009, 5:11 pm EST

if you had the chance to go around the world, make tons of money, but had to play their type of music, you probably would

Yusei Fudo | 6/8/2009, 5:11 pm EST

God I can’t stand them. Such hacks and downright poor musicians. Only 1 of these three twats are talented, the other two are shitheads and there songs are horrid.

Mander | 6/8/2009, 5:13 pm EST

The Jonas Brothers are talented young musicians who write their own music and play their own instruments. I enjoy listening to their music. And, I like that they have good values. Nice looking too! Thanks for reporting on them.

Catlin | 6/8/2009, 5:20 pm EST

WOW 19 semis driving around the country to carry crap. Not a very environmentally friendly group are they?

Jacob | 6/8/2009, 5:21 pm EST

I don’t know why people feel the need to hate or even comment if it’s not something they like. To the person who said something along the lines of if you love them so much then whatever we say shouldn’t change that. You’re right and it does not change the way I think or listen to them one bit, it just get’s boring and very annoying constantly hearing about someone who hates them or says they have sucky music. Music is art, just because you like hard rock doesn’t make the Jonas Brother’s music any bit less than that type of music. It’s perception and opinion and comparing them to other bands that are in different genres and have been around forever is pointless and fairly ignorant. It would be like me(I’m a photographer) comparing Ansel Adams to Annie Leibovitz. Sure, they are both photographers and are amazing and great visions but they are two completely different beasts and have/had completely different artistic visions.
Jugheads’ Revenge, I find your comment ignorant and very condescending. Rolling Stone’s has covered Popular Culture forever. To those of you saying they are going to be has beens. There have been people saying that last year, the year before that, the year before that, and the year before that and yet, it still hasn’t happened.

AMEN TO THIS COMMENT

Viking | 6/8/2009, 5:26 pm EST

I’m over these hacks, only the younger one is talented and career focused. The other two should just go away.

No Green | 6/8/2009, 5:28 pm EST

Wow they are taking 19 semi’s but they push about being green on the Disney channel. WTF is wrong with that picture.

Jimmy | 6/8/2009, 5:45 pm EST

A JOKE!!

Laura | 6/8/2009, 5:51 pm EST

First of all, all you haters can seriously just SHUT. UP. Stop saying they don’t have talent. If you say that, you’re retarded. If it was SOOO easy to play many different instruments, sing, have a tv show, play a ton of sold out shows, get close to no sleep at night and STILL perform great the next day, i’m sure you’d do it too. doesn’t sound so easy does it? these boys are young and they’re doing what they love. i could care less if you don’t like them. we don’t go off being pissy little bitches about bands you like, so don’t do it about bands we like. and yeah you’re entitled to your opinion, fine whatever but you’re not entitled to be a douche bag. just because this isn’t “real music” to you doesn’t mean it isnt to millions of fans who look up to them. and don’t hate on rolling stones for giving them another, yes ANOTHER cover. like i said, Rolling Stones is a music magazine. the jonas brothers play music that is loved by plennnnty of people. clearly if this band is loved by so many, they’re gonna wanna publish stories of them. and this is their second cover, so they must be doing something right. the jonas brothers are NOT these “Gay little teenies” who play shows for only little 4 year old girls. they’re maturing. they’re men. but hey, i mean you wouldn’t know that cause you would never give them a chance cause youre judgemental and pathetic.

and for whoever that dumbass who said that mickey mouse would be performing with them? i don’t even know what to say to you. you’re retarded. first of all, its physically impossible. mickey mouse isn’t even real. second of all, they don’t even have a disney record label. disney has nothing to do with their music. they write and sing what they want to sing and you can’t blame them for doing what they wanna do. shut up. you’re pathetic. bye

Yusei Fudo | 6/8/2009, 5:52 pm EST

Also jacob, the Jonases are fading quite fast kiddo. Fucking up at the grammys with Stevie, lossing the grammmy which could’ve been the only thing to make some people get an ounce of respect for these idiots, there movie made almost no money and was a complete box office failure, the ratings on there show are low as can be even by disney standards, AND there new single is low on the tracks. These three did’nt get really big till late 07, when Disney kicked them into high gear, and ever since after there last album came out EVERYTHING went downhill for them. They’re fading, the numbers show it, the only people who still care bout them are the obsessive teen girls, you, and the kids.

Yusei Fudo | 6/8/2009, 5:57 pm EST

*FIRST COMMENT DID”NT POST*
Jacob as someone who’s seen you all over Youtube I find it quite patehtic how you freak over EVERY single JB insult. They’re a disney pop boy band, a majority of there music has very little soul to it. People don’t hate them because they’re not hard rock. I enjoy pop music, but these guys are terrible. They have no musical vision and have no idea how to balance maturity with pop elements proper, so they play it safe and stay with the Disney audience. There music is bland, been there done that boy band garbage that we’ve had too many times before. Only difference is this time around they’re fading faster then all the others did. Good thing, they were at the top for a year, gave us three good songs, and soon they will be history. Hopefully Nick, the only one with a brain or talent of the three, will break out like Timberlake did, but as for the rest of em, if they stick to what they’re doing now. They’re screwed. Why anyone calls there music rock is beyond me.

Note to self | 6/8/2009, 6:01 pm EST

Sad day when you read stuff like this in rollingstone and not 17 or some other teenie bopper mag. Rollingstone has become the equvalent of the lavish cake that got stuck in Whitney Hustons ass, it was rich and grand at one point, but now is a unrecognizable, smelly mess of a dookie bubble.

Lynn | 6/8/2009, 6:11 pm EST

I love the Jonas Brothers music. I like many many of their songs, and the new song Paranoid is great. Much Better byte I like too. They are very talented musically and some of their songs of their last few albums are some of my favorite songs — including Burnin Up and When You Look Me in the Eyes. I am no teen either. I have tickets to their tour and am looking forward to it. The stage/set looks awesome!

Jacob | 6/8/2009, 6:14 pm EST

Yusei,
I don’t freak out, I just give my opinion. I’m sorry you don’t feel the soul in the songs as much as I do. I could care less about success, they love music so I’ll know that they will always find a way to make music and I’ll always find a way to support and listen. That’s the main complaint I hear about them and they are always compared with classic rock bands which is ludicrous to do. It’s clear you haven’t given them a fair chance or their simply not your style as music. As I said below, it’s all about perception, I guess you didn’t perceive it as well as I did, your loss, not mine.

Me | 6/8/2009, 6:15 pm EST

Oh good lord, people that are all ‘I can’t believe this is in Rolling Stone,’ get a life. There are different tastes and genres–and these guys are really good! Your insults are immature and unamusing except to you and those of like feeble-mindedness.

Tony | 6/8/2009, 6:18 pm EST

I get why some people are pissed. I enjoy JB alot but as a regular reader of this magazine I don’t get why they’re getting ANOTHER cover issue in such a short period of time. Well I do get it, I just don’t see a point really. There tour looks very interesting though, and there new album may finally be the push they need to prove themselves beyond just “Disney boy band” status. I wish them good luck. In a world of celebs with giant egos and pissy attitudes, it’s nice to see a group of young respectful guys get some fame for once.

Zamunda | 6/8/2009, 6:24 pm EST

Hello I am from south Africa. Please come to our country, your song umm bop is a big hit here. We play it at the discotech.

Jacob | 6/8/2009, 6:28 pm EST

LMAO, It’s been a while since I’ve heard a Hanson comparison. I think it’s actually been a few years.

JENNA!! | 6/8/2009, 6:34 pm EST

alright, all of you saying they have “no talent” are stupid, because if they had no talent and were peices of SHIT! then rollingstones and everyother magazine or show, or anything like taht wouldnt say a word about them, you need to realize they may not b your taste in music alright, im 17 years old going on 18 and they are my favorite band alive.. alright “what was soo special about the beatles” uhm howabout a whole lot of nothing their music was annoying and full of stupid shit, lets write songs about fucking drugs. howabout get a life. alright. im not saying they didnt have some good songs but you guys need to leave them the fuck alone alright… if you hated them soooooooo much and think they suck or faded. why are they still so big, and the biggest group outthere. alright. really , this is going to b a cant miss performance. and if you dont like them so be it. and they mess up at times because they are HUMAN! everyone makes mistakes and im sorry their mistakes arent as bad as brittany spears or anyone like that. they respect everyone, and are great guys. so if you dont like them then SHUT UP! okay thanks :)

JENNA!! | 6/8/2009, 6:45 pm EST

and agian you guys are stupid, if THEY SUCKKED rollingstones wouldnt have them TWICE now on the cover alright. so suck your own dick, and really, bashing them isnt going to make them lessfamous so why dont u move on to new things like bashing the stupid whores like brittany spears, and other stupid druggies alright they havnt done a DAMN thing wrong they respect everyone and they deserve everygood thing given to them. theyve won more awards than half the artist out there and they are on their 4th album release already so just leave them alone. disney is just what got them started alright. leave them alone, ill stand up for them no matter what. and ill always be a fan of theirs and they will NEVER die down.

lindseyx | 6/8/2009, 7:35 pm EST

I love the Jonas Brothers, and their new album is really a new, mature sound. I love it.
If people would take the time to look past the fact that they’re associated with Disney and have a lot of young fans, they’d see that these three really are talented.
I love them to death and they write what they want. They’re very real and talented.
Give them a real chance. Don’t jump to conclusions.
I can’t wait for them to be on the cover again

RS? | 6/8/2009, 8:09 pm EST

if anybody feels that Rolling Stone is giving attention to the Jonas Bros for their art and not for the readership and magazine sales that a Jonas Brothers cover will bring in is a serious state of denial. This magazine is a corporate rock n’ roll publication. It’s frustrating.

RS? | 6/8/2009, 8:17 pm EST

Oh, and Jenna!!!, im sorry but please don’t even go there. I’m sure you are a smart girl but please… you are not helping yourself.

chester copperpot | 6/8/2009, 8:34 pm EST

nick has to go solo.
he’s the talent

michelle | 6/8/2009, 9:28 pm EST

to Jenna!!!:
“what was soo special about the beatles” uhm howabout a whole lot of nothing their music was annoying and full of stupid shit, lets write songs about fucking drugs. howabout get a life.”

okay, i love the jonas brothers too, they’re one of my very favorite bands, but you clearly no nothing about music if you think the beatles music is a piece of shit. jonas probably wouldn’t be where they are today without the beatles, they’ve been an huge influence on many musicians, probably most of the ones that you listen to. so if you were smart, you wouldn’t be talking shit about the beatles on a post about JONAS… go listen to sgt. pepper’s and just shut up.

Broomstick | 6/8/2009, 10:01 pm EST

“and for whoever that dumbass who said that mickey mouse would be performing with them? i don’t even know what to say to you. you’re retarded. first of all, its physically impossible. mickey mouse isn’t even real. second of all, they don’t even have a disney record label. disney has nothing to do with their music. they write and sing what they want to sing and you can’t blame them for doing what they wanna do. shut up. you’re pathetic. bye”

Ok, first of all, the Mickey Mouse comment was SARCASM, look it up, you imbecile. Of course Mickey Mouse isn’t real, nobody believes that a freakin’ cartoon character is real, do you really think that people reading it are as dumb as you are? Second, The Jonas Brothers are signed to Hollywood Records, which is owned by the Disney Company. Therefore, they ARE signed to Disney, and if you had the brains to some research before talking out of your ass, you wouldn’t look like a complete fool. Disney has EVERYTHING to do with them, their music, their image, their TV show, their purity rings, EVERYTHING. Disney would never sign an artist that they can’t market as pure and wholesome, regardless of talent. That’s why their music sounds so artificial, so cookie-cutter. Who’s retarded now?

s | 6/8/2009, 11:30 pm EST

Jenna, darling. You will realize one day that there’s more out there than JoBros. Give the Beatles a listen before you call them shit cus you obviously are living in your own little 17 yr old girl world. Please don’t come on RS and rant about The Beatles sucking and Jonas Bros being hated on and how much you LOVE them. They aren’t doing anything The Beatles didn’t already pave the way for them to do.

Chris | 6/8/2009, 11:38 pm EST

Hey to each their own. If you seriously get a buzz off of the Jonas Brothers then good for you! I personally think they’re absolute shit, can’t hum a single tune by them and they can’t sing live but hey I’m sure twenty somethings said the same stuff about the bands I liked in my teens (maybe not though as many of the Seattle bands and Britpop bands have lasted) but it wouldn’t have mattered to me. I think why people are pissed is because there are truly better bands out there. If the Jonas Brothers weren’t on MTV, Teen magazines and in the teen pop culture nobody would listen to them solely based on music alone. People who love music are very protective of the music they love and rightfully so but hey, if the kids like it then let them like it. As for Jenna, you may be around 18 but you write like you’re twelve. I’d hold off on bashing the Beatles until the Jonas Brothers make 13 huge albums in seven years, re-invent recording technology, break up before they turn 30 and then forty years after they break up, with two dead members, manage to still sell millions of records and gain legions of fans with each generation. Not too many bands do not list the Beatles as an influence. When you trace popular music back to where all the elements of songwriting, instrumentation, production, performance and popular culture impact came together it goes back to the Beatles. Before them, you had great artists, songwriters and performers but never did they combine the elements with such mastery. Don’t believe me? I bet the Beatles Box set that comes out in September outsells the Jonas Brothers 2:1 and you can quote me.

Morgan | 6/9/2009, 12:34 am EST

I think the tour is going to be amazing! I cant wait to see the Jonas Brothers and the awesome new stage!

I don’t like the Beatles much (not because I think their music wasn’t good, I’m just not into them), but to diss them and their influence is just about the dumbest thing one can do. I don’t listen to them, but I know their music is responsible for 90 percent of music made in the past 20 years, they layed the foundation for great pop music and rock music, along with Elvis, so I will always tip my hat off to them. Asking what’s so special about the Beatles is like asking what’s so special about Mozart. If they never made music, the Jonas brothers would probably be working at McDonald’s or Burger King instead of going on tour and making millions of dollars off of hormonal teenage girls. Think before you speak, Jenna.

Is this RS or Tiger Beat??? | 6/9/2009, 9:35 am EST

I can’t tell the difference anymore!

Mrs. Nicholas Jonas | 6/9/2009, 11:03 am EST

Stop dissing Rolling Stone for putting them in the maazine! Most likely all of u who are dissing them have never sat down and listened to their music. Therefore u have no right to say anything. Maybe if u actually did then u would actually understand how amazing talented this boys are. Everyone has a different taste in music so you can say that u don’t like their music. But don’t say they suck and they are untalented. Because that is false. They have worked so hard and they totally earned the popularity they have now. Also it’s pretty lame of u to be wasting ur time dissing a band. Don’t u have anything better to do?

Pslightly Psycho | 6/9/2009, 11:21 am EST

I’d like to shove their purity rings so far up their asses they’d end up being tongue studs.
As if these douches don’t get enough press, now a “respectable” music mag like RS is giving them print time.
Then again Lady Gaga was their covergirl recently.
I’ll stick with SPIN.

Iselda | 6/9/2009, 2:05 pm EST

woo jonas!
they are amazing musicians
cant wait for the concert in dallas

i love that alot of people bash about them
they keep getting publicity from morons
that for some reason hate on pop artist.
o let me guess these people are adam lambert fans! thats why!
but who cares what some people think about them.
everybody gots their own kind of music
and some people just happen to like Jonas!

weee, its an amazing world!

Alexandra(: | 6/9/2009, 2:12 pm EST

Relax !
RS is not going to become a teen mag !
They probably only posted this because of the cover shoot they did with the boys awhile. This blog post is just RS doing a follow up to see how the boys are doing with their World Tour coming up.

Katie | 6/9/2009, 2:18 pm EST

Funny how the very people who like to tout their musical superiority, are the ones who so crassly insult the Jonas Brothers like petulant children. Honestly, I have artists I can’t stand, however I don’t PERSONALLY ATTACK THEM. That’s really mature and definetley shows you’re musical superiority guys. Ugh. If you dislike them at least be constructive with the criticism and stick to hating on the music. You don’t know them as people so hating on them as individuals is a pretty low blow. Honestly, some of you guys are just as bad as the “OMG JO BROS ROCK! THEY ARE PERFECT AND NEVER DO ANYTHING WRONG!!” crew. You’re all just making yourselves look very immature.

dlt | 6/9/2009, 3:40 pm EST

I don’t hate the Jonas Bros. It’s just that I’ve been around long enough to know that they’re mere pawns. Ask Keith Partridge/David Cassidy.

Anonymous | 6/9/2009, 3:57 pm EST

Don’t you think all those bands (Kings of Leon, The Beatles..) started out at the Jonas Brothers’ age??? Their music is refreshing because it’s not all about drugs and alcohol!!!!!!!

Lesson Of The Day ? | 6/9/2009, 4:06 pm EST

The Jonas Brothers are a band that write and play their own music and are liked by many, but also hated by many. Some peoples’ comments here are ridiculous. People have and are entitled to their own opinion. You can like a band, or not, whatever. It’s YOUR opinion and no one else’s should taint that.
People need to understand this little thing called acceptance. You need to accept the fact that people have different tastes than you.
Personally, I am a Jonas fan, but I’m not coming on here bashing anyone who says anything bad or mean to say about them; and the people who are doing this need to stop. It’s uncalled for and makes it look like anyone who likes this band can’t accept that.
THE ACCEPTANCE OF OTHER’S OPINIONS WILL GET YOU FAR IN LIFE.

Ghost Writer | 6/9/2009, 5:24 pm EST

Now, I’m not saying I hate the Jonas Brothers, but I have to agree with some people here: they are bland, their music sounds liek every other boy band out there, and they’re just not exciting at all (same album, again and again). I do listen to Disney (classics), but the JB are not a rock band: they are a Disney machine trying to pass as a rock band.

yes. | 6/9/2009, 6:51 pm EST

YOU. YOU ARE STILL RETARDED. yeah no fucking shit saying mickey mouse is performing is sarcasm but its not even like, a good joke because it’s just.. retarded. but hey, i’m retarded too cause i thought you were serious about mickey performing with them for a second. naht. there are plenty of bands signed onto hollywood records that i have never once seen on the disney channel first of all. second of all, their show on the disney channel came out MUCH MUCH MUCH later than any of their music did. before their show, i never saw them on disney channel. maybe like once or twice on a commercial or two but besides that, nothing. and why don’t YOU do some research to see that they’re making their own record label. and shall i say it again, DISNEY HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE SONGS THEY WRITE. THEY WRITE THEIR OWN. sure, in the beginning they might write cleaner songs. but no matter how clean the songs are themselves, they still wrote them. they have young fans, what do you expect them to do? sorry they’re actually a decent group of guys who isn’t going to write about drugs and all that shit. but now as they’re maturing their songs are too. and yes they are still writing them themselves.

“Oasis is an extremely flat version of the Beatles”

Aside from their haircuts and the fact that they openly admit to loving the Beatles, Oasis are nowhere near the Beatle copycat band that American media portrays them as. There are elements of the Beatles in there but no more than any other band. If you actually listen to their records (Try their latest “Dig Out Your Soul” you’ll hear nods to the Sex Pistols, Led Zep, The Who, The Stones, and more. Their influence is wide and varied. Tell me how “The SHock of the Lightning” or “Falling Down” sound anything like any Beatles song. Wonderwall was named after a George Harrison album of electronic music but there is no Beatle song that it mimics. You want to hear Beatle plagiarism? Listen to “What I Got” by Sublime and then listen to “Lady Madonna” by the Beatles. The fact is though, Oasis just did a stadium tour throughout North America and are finishing up a massive world tour that is well attended; 15 years after their debut and with zero radio or press support.

Derivative music. Original acts are rare

Re:dlt | 6/10/2009, 10:56 am EST

dlt | 6/9/2009, 10:46 pm EST

“Derivative music. Original acts are rare”

True. I can’t think of one artist to come out in decades that is an ‘original’ act. I’d say U2 were the last because U2 carved their own sound that has often been mimicked and never duplicated and no I’m not a super U2 fan or anything. Even a band like Radiohead were very derivitive for “Pablo Honey” and “The Bends”. “Creep” was your typical quiet/loud grunge song and “High and Dry” chorus is just “Stay” by U2 with different words. OK Computer was probably the last ‘origingal’ sounding album of accessible music that anybody has made and that hasn’t happened since 1997. I’m sure anybody can point to a bunch of underground bands that make music that is far out there but that just makes them derivitive of “Revolution 9″ or Pink Floyd or Sonic Youth. Derivitive doesn’t always mean bad. I loved Nirvana but Kurt wrote like Noel in that he took bits and pieces from all of his influences and put them together into something else. It all comes down to what you like or don’t like but Oasis are no more derivitive than any other rock band since the 80s. It’s Rock and Roll; there are only so many ways to do it and Oasis have never pretended to be anything other than a solid classic rock and roll band with quality songs.

When U2 first hit, the Edge’s guitar sounded like bagpipes, or something. It was unique. He doesn’t sound unique these days, however.

Regarding Bono, Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan were there first. And they were better.

It’s not hip to be unique. No money/status in it

I have to disagree with you on one thing. Yes, there aren’t a lot of original acts out now, but I have to say the stuff Green Day has come out with in the past few years is like nothing I’ve ever heard before. Their new album “21st Century Breakdown” is really like no other album out there (same with “American Idiot”). They are probably the only big artist out there now that are radically changing their music each new album that comes out. Sorry, big Green Day fan, so had to get that out there. The Jonas Brothers are whatever (don’t really like them to tell the truth), but after seeing Green Day in concert multiple times, their concert is never going to be as good.

JBlover22 | 6/14/2009, 8:34 pm EST

Listen up all you haters.
You shouldn’t be hating on the Jonas Brothers or any of the other bands they were talking about because you know they are out there doing something with their life’s and making a difference in kids and teens life’s It’s not like they are sitting at home on their parents couch not having a job or going to school. like some teens and people this days. so I think no boding should be hating on people that are out there doing what they love to do. SO PLEASE STOP HATING ON PEOPLE BECAUSE IT IS RUDE, WRONG, AND DISRESPECTFUL SO DON’T DO IT… YOUR PARENTS DIDN’T RAISE YOU THAT WAY.. I am not saying this because
I love the JONAS BROTHERS. I’m saying it because it is wrong and my parents didn’t raise me like that either.
SO PLEASE STOP…..

Congratulations everyone on here who has taken the time to talk abut how gay and stupid you think the Jonas Brothers are. Here’s a little news flash for you, NOT EVER ONE IN THE FREAKIN WORLD LIKES WHAT YOU LIKE! Weird huh? Someone might actually disagree with you. I personally like Joe, Nick and Kevin. I like their music and I did buy tickets to their World Tour. Oh my gosh. I just disagreed with you! So go ahead and reply to me, and tell me your freakin views. Guess what, it’s not gonna change what I think of JB, and another thing they’ve been on THE COVER OF ROLLING STONE BEFORE!!!!! So why they are out making the most of life you spend your time on here telling everyone how stupid, ugly and untalented they are. You really deserve a BIG round of applause. Congrats.

KellyJ | 6/15/2009, 8:20 am EST

Oh no! You poor babies!!!! Did RS publish something about a group other than your very favorite one? How dare they!!!! Don’t they know that your mommies told you that you are the most special people on earth, and that everything should be just the way you like it? You’d better run and tell your mamas right away about the mean old magazine who doesn’t think you’re the most important, precious little people in the universe. Get a life you pathetic narcissists and shut up already!

they actually have real emotions in their songs dealing with problems that actually matter.

JBlover_ | 6/15/2009, 11:11 pm EST

Please leave the Jonas Brothers alone. They deserve to be in this magazine because they are very cute and cool. I love their music cause it talks about what i feel. You should not hate them just because you dislike them. They are only three genius guys who love to do what they do. They write very nice songs that are very very original. I think they are the best band since the beatles disbanded. Don’t think that I only listen to the JB, i also like many other bands like Panic at the Disco, Mcfly & Avril Lavigne. Please don’t hate the JB. They dont like to be hated. Think as if you were one of them. How would you feel?? They have felings too. Dont treat them so mean.

Hey Rolling Stone! I see some haters. But you know what, just ignore them. Because so many people are going to buy this issue!

Now what I don’t understand is why you haters bother. If you hate them, why do you spend so much time on them? Most people are smarter than that.

jen0519 | 6/17/2009, 8:43 pm EST

Alright, some people here are ridiculous. Saying that you don’t like their music is fine, I’m not forcing you to listen to them and you have the right to your own opinion. However, some rude comments on here are directed straight at the Jonas Brothers themselves. And that is really immature. You don’t know them personally, so don’t attack them. Being a Jonas fan, I hear them same crap all the time. “THE JONAS BROTHERS ARE GAY, THEY SHOULD DIE, WHAT THEY DO ISN’T MUSIC” It’s so sad how much hate their is out there. Plus, do somehow think you’re being original by hating the Jonas Brothers? I am 16 and get so much crap for it, but you know what? I DON’T CARE. I listen to what I want to listen to, whether it be The Jonas Brothers, John Mayer, Dave Matthews Band, or U2. And NOBODY will change my opinion

Okay, so you claim we should listen to “real music”. The beauty of music is that it is a universal language that can connect and inspire people. It makes people feel happy, or calm. It gets you pumped up, or it connects you to your religion. It makes you cry, it helps you get through a rough patch in your life. Music can be so many things, and certain tunes and lyrics mean different things to different people. What if what you consider is your ‘real’ music isn’t what we consider our ‘real’ music? You may be inspired by or in awe of your favorite song, because your life and experiences have enabled you to connect and find deeper meaning for that song. But another person might not get it the way you do. People connect with different songs. For me, Jonas Brothers songs are my ‘real’ music. I connect with them, they make me feel happy, they inspire me. Would you rather we (Jonas Brothers fans) force ourselves to listen to ‘real’ music if it doesn’t mean anything to us? This is the epitome of the quote “To each his own”. It’s sad that while music can be a great comnnector, it often becomes a great divider. Please, let’s get over this immatureness and just accept others preferences. Thank You.

dont assume something about their music just because of their image, fans or the fact their on ‘disney channel.’ i actually know a lot of people who hate disney but think their music is really great.
i hope this will let people with pre judgments take a second look and give their music a try.

jen0519 | 6/17/2009, 9:16 pm EST

Voice of Reason, I completely agree %100

there is no such thing as real music. Music defined by merriam-webster:

a. the science or art of ordering tones or sounds in succession, in combination, and in temporal relationships to produce a composition having unity and continuity b: vocal, instrumental, or mechanical sounds having rhythm, melody, or harmony

Anonymous | 6/18/2009, 8:48 am EST

Thank you jen0519.

Anonymous | 6/18/2009, 7:47 pm EST

This topic is getting a little out of hand. Attacking them personally is ridiculous. Why can’t you just accept that there are different genres of music? Like others have already said, everyone has their OWN opinion. These boys are young, talented musicians just doing what they love. If it’s so easy to go out and act in your own TV show; do interviews, radio shows, and talkshows; perform in concerts while also taking care of the business and construction aspect of it; while also being morally grounded and family oriented, why don’t you do it? Sure, they may generally appeal to teens, but what’s so bad about that? I’m sure YOU had a teen idol when YOU were growing up.

JBFan | 6/18/2009, 8:13 pm EST

To all the haters out there…
It’s fine that you don’t like the Jonas Brothers and you ARE intilted to your opinion BUT it is really immature of you to waste your time writing hurtfull things about them. Think about it this way-if we went onto a video or something of an artist who you really admire and said that they suck and their songs are meaningless, you’d be pretty upset wouldn’t you-do you see my point? All we ask is that you keep mean or inappropriate comments to yourself…like I said before it’s okay that you don’t like them. Just please use your time on something YOU acutually like.

The JBs are just another NKOTB or N’sync. They’ll have 3-4 years of megasucces, and then vanish. The most popular one will likely go solo and the other two will blow through their trust funds and get fat. That’s just how it is with young (manufactured) bands with a young fan base. They are sustained by media hype and fickle crazed teen hormones – not talent. The fans will mature, lose interest, and move on to the next “big” thing.

denzepp58 | 6/22/2009, 4:54 pm EST

This just proves how lame this magazine has gotten when you cater to the teeny-boppers who listen to this PABLUM… Jonas Bros,FOB,Britney, ad nauseam..I can’t believe this..inside Camp Jonas!!!! What drivel!! This is not serious music…I know music is in the ear of the beholder and all that and there is a place for this kind of music but RS USED to be about serious music and did not cater to the pre-puberty market and it has lost it’s integrity by not covering serious artists who are still making Great music,Both older artists and the best of the new artists like Secret Machines,Black Keys,Jack White School of Seven Bells and others..instead we get Jonas Bros and rap noise..Shame on you!!

Everyone has their own comments and their own taste in music. Yes, I like the Jonas Brothers. I also happen to like the Counting Crows and REM. That is why we are all individuals. This magazine shouldn’t go by just YOUR opinion. There may be one month with Britney Spears on the front of a magazine. I don’t prefer her music, but I won’t complain. I won’t bombard rollingstone.com saying she’s a disgrace and never read the magazine again. I won’t even comment. If you like her, then comment saluting the magazine. If you don’t, then call one of your friends and tell them. You shouldn’t waste your time on a band you don’t like and go out of your way to comment how bad they are because then the Jonas Brothers just waste 5 minutes out of your life.

Anna | 6/23/2009, 8:37 pm EST

It’s great how their attitude towards things have changed. I think that they’re growing up with their fans and demanding respect. Their concerts will make you think highly of therm if you do decide to go to one. They may of gotten bigger by disney but I’ve been a fan for a LONG time and I can see that disney is losing it’s grip on them. the jonas brothers are great I would like to hear in person. the music of jonas is cool like them.
buscar.

mary | 7/8/2009, 9:40 am EST

when I saw that I was going to see a concert of the jonas I begged my mom a thousand times that I wanted to go to this concert and I could not go. skeptical that it would be front row screaming pass me all day with my 8 years in a concert of the jonas could not believe it.
music, voice, and I them in the concert had a great bunch of girls screaming and stronger when they left was their cry and that was my comment but it sounds like a story.
is no longer comment but it is what I think.

You little fan girls and boys just don’t get it. I think you all need to start engaging your brains and exercising some individualism a little more and following every other brainwashed tweenager a little less.

People don’t hate the Jonas Brothers for their sound (which is arguably not the greatest) and of course guys aren’t jealous that the Jonas Brothers “get all the girls” (let’s face it – they wouldn’t even know what to do with a girl if they did manage to “get” one).

People hate the Jonas Brothers because of what they stand for. Artificial, manufactured Pop Music which is lowering the standard of music in general, brainwashing today’s youth and fattening the pockets of greedy, morally bereft executives – all at the same time. This is exactly the opposite of what music is supposed to be about – blood sweat and tears, enlightenment, creativity, freedom, expression of the soul…

I agree with you all that what defines “good music” is completely subjective and I also believe everybody should be entitled to their own opinions about music.

However, the fact of the matter is The Jonas Brothers are simply a money making device for Disney and they wouldn’t be anywhere without their corporate puppet masters pulling the strings for them. That’s the cold hard truth.

If you want to hear music that’s not simply a product of corporate greed, there’s plenty around; You just have to look a bit harder…..

Georgina | 10/25/2009, 11:53 am EST

Rise up, Jonas lovers!
So what if they don’t fit some people’s twisted idea of what a ’serious’ musician is? You pretend that you don’t care about image… but you are so hung up on the fact that these boys are young and work for disney that you refuse to listen to their music or respect their fans.
And I think the figure speak for themselves. People like the Jonas Brothers. No, people LOVE the Jonas Brothers. They buy so many tickets to concerts that stadiums sell out in minutes, they buy t-shirts with their names on and put their posters up in their bedrooms. The Jonas Brothers are loved by many. Deal with it.

personyadontknow | 11/9/2009, 10:53 pm EST

Jesus people, rolling stone magazine is not some golden beacon from above, capturing the glory of rock and roll icons, its business. And if rolling stone needed some doe i’m sure the brothers jonas were happy to exchange that for a cover. Dont be so upset, its a not a way of life, its a magazine.

personyadontknow | 11/9/2009, 11:04 pm EST

what a waste of time hahahah

Kirsten Chamberlin | 11/18/2009, 9:42 pm EST

You guys are so arrogant, AND ignorant, it’s rediculous. Jonas Brothers are and always will be AMAZING.
Shove it, por favor.
Thanks :)
