Aerosmith Lose Guitarist Brad Whitford For Part of Summer Tour

Just two days before Aerosmith launch their summer tour, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame band revealed in a statement that guitarist Brad Whitford will be missing the opening stretch of dates due to a medical problem; he will be recuperating from an unspecified surgery. However, the show must go on, and Whitford’s temporary replacement will be guitarist Bobby Schneck, who previously performed with Weezer, Green Day and Slash. You can bet Schneck has had Aerosmith’s Toys in the Attic on constant rotation the past few days, as the group recently revealed that they would play their classic 1975 album in its entirety during the tour.

Whitford’s absence continues a string of health-related bad luck for the band. Plans to record a new Aerosmith album prior to their summer jaunt with ZZ Top were delayed after guitarist Joe Perry required knee surgery. In the past three years, singer Steven Tyler has gone under the knife for both throat and foot surgery. While today’s press release made no mention of how long Whitford would be sidelined, it did stress that he’d only miss a part of the tour.

ted | 6/8/2009, 4:42 pm EST

Toys in the attic is one of my all time fave’s. I might have to go see them this time.

deano | 6/8/2009, 4:43 pm EST

Great, yet another excuse for the band to stay out of the recording studio.

Inside Edition | 6/8/2009, 4:56 pm EST

It is being reported that Brad Whitford fell and could not get up. Thank goodness he had his Jitterbug near by.

T | 6/8/2009, 6:12 pm EST

Aerosmith will make a massive comeback with a new album once everyone is healthy. I just hope they return to the roots and lay waste to all these new rock bands they influenced. No more ‘cryin’ please. Toys in the attic live! cant wait.

heathen2002 | 6/8/2009, 8:01 pm EST

Looks like they need to hang it up..This is getting pathetic..

Jonah | 6/8/2009, 9:57 pm EST

Schneck doesn’t need to have “Toys” on constant rotation — he cut his teeth on it! He’s the real deal, a great guy, a team player, and will not disappoint. BTW — he was selected by Brad himself.

Schneck and Aerosmith are cool. Get well soon Brad. All that good stuff.

But isn’t it funny how this always seems to happen AFTER tickets (very expensive at that) go on sale?

kepp | 6/9/2009, 1:44 am EST

When was the last time Aerosmith was good? Oh yeah, the 70’s.

Funny the author lists the medical problems Aerosmith has face the last few years, but fails to mention Tom Hamilton’s serious bout with cancer.

Jon G. | 6/9/2009, 12:43 pm EST

Kepp, were you unconscious when “Pump” was released?

Bo Reeder | 6/9/2009, 4:55 pm EST

Bobby Schneck with Aerosmith? You bet your A$$!!! Couldn’t think of a better man to step up! Have fun Bobby, play the V!

Ian | 6/9/2009, 5:47 pm EST

Thank God someone mentioned Tom Hamilton’s bout with cancer.
Does anyone ever remember when Rolling Stone magazine wouldn’t put someone on the cover until it was earned. I say let’s put Aerosmith on the Cover.

Now the mag just need to be paid enough to promote the highly fixed American Idol “contestant”.
Major BS.

I am trying to get tickets to see these guys, and this is a major bummer. The tickets are a pricey (although it is TWO amazing bands). Whitford is probably the unsung hero of the group, he plays lead guitar on Nobodys Fault, Round and Round, and Last Child, to name a few. Without him, Joe Perry really would have trouble. Not that the new guy is bad, I wish more than the best for him. I am stoked that the band will play all of Toys in the Attic. I hope that they will ditch the power ballads (save for Dream On and You See Me Crying) for the sleazier and harder rocking stuff. For me, they started to lose it after Get A Grip, I don’t Want To Miss A Thing is OK, but not really true Aerosmith. Real Aerosmith is the 1973-1978 version, some of the best music you can get your hands on. Permanent Vacation and Pump are good, but thats when they started to get sappy and kinda poppy. Honkin On Bobo was a great return to their roots and a good album. If the new album is like Bobo, or better, it will be a good one. Aerosmith: good luck, and bring back the seventies Aerosmith, the REAL Aerosmith, not the Miss a thing and Jaded version

This is a slap in the face to Brad’s son who should have first dibbs on his dad’s position.

Kelly Foxx | 6/9/2009, 8:18 pm EST

Aww, I love Brad. That really blows. Hopefully this Schneck guy has what it takes. He sure has some large shoes to fill…

kill the industry | 6/9/2009, 9:42 pm EST

They didn’t offer it to Jimmy Crespo or Rick Dufay…. another stupid, disrespectful move from what used to be my favorite band…

Just retire you money grubbing cheaters.

Kelly Foxx | 6/10/2009, 12:11 am EST

I partly agree with the blogger below me. The position totally should’ve been offered to Jimmy Crespo or Rick Dufay. Many people don’t realize it, but they were members in the early eighties after Joe and Brad temporarily left the band. The least Steven Tyler could do is let Crespo take Brad’s place, then again, maybe he wouldn’t want to. Oh well, I still love Aerosmith more than anything. =)

Steve F | 6/10/2009, 12:37 pm EST

It’s just not Aerosmith without
Brad.

This is BS | 6/10/2009, 4:28 pm EST

Brad whitford should not be replaced, the tour should be postponed. I’m going to refund my jones beach tickets………….

We are going to see the Pittsburgh show on June 24th and it won’t be the same without you, Brad! Get well soon! Best of luck to a speedy recovery! :)

Great choice. Bobby is as good as it gets! A great guy and a great guitarist. And here’s hoping Brad gets well soon!

Eyup. Brad placed him in his shoes himself. Can’t ask for a better endorsement than that!

lively | 6/13/2009, 7:05 pm EST

Bobby rules! Couldn’t have been offered to a better guy.

John H. | 6/14/2009, 4:23 pm EST

Brad you will be missed,You and Joe Perry are the BEST one-two punch guitarist in Rock and Roll.
Get Well Soon

Dan | 6/15/2009, 1:02 pm EST

Mr. Whitford,
I feel your pain. I just experienced an anurysm 2 weeks ago but modern medicine is out of this world. After the surgeon inserted a coil in my brain via my thigh to seal off the leak all is a lot better. If you experience like a nose freeze followed by a hot flash I am assuming that is from blood pressure medicine, as this was my experience. Rest is the key.
Don’t even worry about going back to work just take care of yourself for now. Good luck

G | 6/15/2009, 1:55 pm EST

Maybe they did offer it to Jimmy Crespo or Rick Dufay or even Brad’s son. How are we to know?

stratguy | 6/15/2009, 2:49 pm EST

Brad blows Joe away. I’ve got tickets to VA Beach and have to take my younger family member or I”d take them back for refund. They should have canned these 10 shows and rescheduled. What an insult to Brad. They wouldn’t do this if it was Joe or Steven.

Bobbys_Babies_Mama | 6/22/2009, 1:10 pm EST

You might consider that the band interviewed/tried out several replacements before deciding on Bobby. You might also consider that Brad endorsed Bobby as his replacement. The kick-off show in St. Louis rocked and Bobby held his own. He’s a professional and fairly humble, and he was willing to step in to fill those really big shoes. I’ll bet none of you would have turned the gig down. I have Bobby’s very talented children, who are quite proud of their papa, not only for this tour, but all the work he’s done in the industry over the past 25 years. The show must go on and so it does, with a more-than-adequate replacement. Don’t any of you naysayers have anything better to do than sit around and take pot-shots at someone who you haven’t even seen perform? Why not see what you’re talking about before you start talking. . . .????

Just Patti | 6/22/2009, 1:14 pm EST

I’m so sorry to hear of this news.
I hope you will be back in play soon. I’ve always have said, you need to watch out for the quiet ones.Gee, I wish I could hit my head in a Ferrari! It’s just some down time. Your noticed Brad. Take care. Aerosmith isn’t Aerosmith without you. This guitarist has some shoes to fill.

Great Auntie | 6/22/2009, 10:41 pm EST

Much respect and well wishes go out to Brad for a quick recovery. In the meantime, go get ‘em Bobby! We saw the opener and you rocked! Mid-Missouri loves you, baby!

stratguy | 6/26/2009, 11:41 pm EST

I’m hearing that the shows are very sub par. They should have canceled until Brad gets back. Why not just finish the CD. Some of you must have never seen them with Crespo or Duffay. They were awefull! I’d rather see JPP than an Aerosmith without Brad Whitford. Nothing against Bobby. I’m sure he is a great guitar tech.

blackbird55 | 6/28/2009, 10:46 pm EST

hahah person who said “i am going to refund my Jones Beach tickets” I went and it was amazing..you missed out bro..Their replacement was just as good if not better..so suck it up and if you did sell your ticket, your loss, moron.

PINK FLOYD | 8/10/2009, 3:35 pm EST

The life of a millionaire is tough, isn’t it? You gotta be very careful and watch your head when exiting your Ferarri. It probably will hurt a lot more than if you were just exiting a Toyota.

wolfdude64 | 9/19/2009, 1:38 pm EST

It won’t be the same without Brad

T Whitford | 10/2/2009, 3:21 am EST

Show must go on! hope you can still ride your motorcycle.

"coop" | 11/2/2009, 10:36 am EST

It is not shocking to me that half of these people are obviously clueless when it comes to the music industry. It’s as if they think people actually plan illness whether minor or major. They also fail to realize how extremely difficult it is to keep a band together for over 30 years, so quit your whinnin’ and show some appreiation. This is from another former major tour musician who has been through replacing players from the jerks that think they can play to those one can only think “good move”.
