Just three years ago Drake (born Aubrey Graham) was known for his role on the N’s Degrassi: The Next Generation, where he played a basketball star who winds up wheelchair-bound after a shooting. Now the 23-year-old MC is the star of a major label bidding war as executives angle to grab the hottest unsigned rapper in the game.
“It’s just one of those moments in time, where the right person comes with the right music to the people,” Bun B explains. Rolling Stone tracks Drake’s rise from his first mixtape with DJ Smallz to his eventual partnership with Lil Wayne, who has mentored the young rapper and recruited Drizzy into his Young Money fold. “Wayne told me to just remember it’s about your thoughts, you got to think about what you want to say beforehand,” Drake tells Rolling Stone. “When he gave me that advice it was almost like him giving me like a cheat code. Here, I’m gonna give you something; I’m gonna give you a piece and see what you do with it.”
