Daryl Hall on His “Oddball” Life in Hall & Oates, Web Series

Next month, Hall & Oates will hit the road for a short tour before Daryl Hall returns to work on his latest solo album. Hall, whose jam-session Web series “Live From Daryl’s House” celebrated its year-and-a-half anniversary in May, marked the occasion with a special episode featuring the Doors’ Robby Krieger and Ray Manzarek. He recently spoke with RS about the status of Hall & Oates, his opinion on pop and his biggest regrets.

Why did you want to do “Daryl’s House”?
I’ve been traveling my whole career, which is most of my life. I thought why don’t I bring the world to me for a change? I’m a person who thrives on collaboration, so I said, ‘OK, let’s have guests on with all these different styles of music and let’s be as eclectic as we want to be, both generationally and stylistically.’ We’re on our 18th episode. Every show just blows me away.

Who is your dream guest?
Maybe Bob Dylan because it would be so fucking weird.

Looking at who’s out now, who are you a huge fan of and would like to have on “Daryl’s House”?
As far as new people, I hear new people all the time.

Any of the Idol people?
You know what? I’m not big with the “singing sensations.” If you notice the people that I tend to pick, they’re players as well as singers. They’re not really pop-oriented. They’re more rock, edgy, unique.

When you see the Britney Spears types these days, what do you think?
That’s got nothing to do with my life. The music has gone in two different directions. You have that direction, and then things like Daryl’s House is another direction.

Can I ask you about Gym Class Heroes’ Travis McCoy, your first guest?
After this Daryl Hall for President thing that these guys did [the name of one of the Heroes' summer tours] I obviously was made aware of them. We started talking, hanging out backstage. He really loves music. A lot of rappers don’t have traditional music abilities, he does.

Looking back over your career, is there a favorite moment, era? Is there a time when you just felt like you had it all?
I never felt like I had it all. In 1985 I had reached a certain point, all those things had happened, like Live Aid, We Are the World, Farm Aid, and I did that thing with the Temptations Live at the Apollo. I had the ability to sort of assess myself in the moment. But most of the time you’re still involved in it. You’re living. It’s the same way with music. I’ve never felt comfortable in the time that I was working. Maybe now I finally have, but in the ’70s I was sort of an oddball. In the ’80s I was definitely an oddball.

What’s the current state of Hall & Oates?
I think it’s only unclear because I don’t do one thing. John and I work together and we tour together pretty often. We play shows. We play our songs. We have different versions of them. Right now we’re doing what I call an up close and personal tour, we do a sort of acoustic version of our songs. Outside of that we do separate things. I’m very devoted to my solo stuff. I’m doing a solo album that I’m going to start in about a month and obviously I’m doing “Live at Daryl’s House.” I do the occasional Hall & Oates tour or gigs.

Are there any regrets from your career? Anything you wish you would have done?
There’s a lot of people that I wish I hadn’t of associated myself with. Both John and I came up out of Philadelphia and Philadelphia music is the hotbed of all anybody ever talked about as nefarious in the business. It was the street version of music. It was nasty. It was crookery. It was dog-eat-dog. We moved into the New York scene, which was pretty much the same thing. So we come from a very tough business. The fact that we’ve survived and thrived is a testament to our strength of will and also our ability to bounce back. We’ve been messed with. If I had it to do over, I probably would have chosen my relationships more carefully.

Have wasted a few work hours watching “Daryl’s House”, and it’s a pretty entertaining show. Would recommend the episode with the electronica duo Chromeo for anybody who’s semi-interested in checking it out…

Daryl’s web episode with Manzarek and Krieger was great as well as very interesting. They all still have it.
I love stuff on the web like this.

Katie | 6/5/2009, 7:30 pm EST

I think Live From Daryl’s House is fantastic..this “private” man brings us into his home once a month and never fails to entertain.

john nixdorf jr | 6/5/2009, 8:44 pm EST

Looking forward to a new solo album, long overdue. Am a devoted LFDH fan. I think my favorite episode was with Company of Thieves (great new band). Thanks for all of the fabulous music over the years.

msobe13 | 6/5/2009, 10:36 pm EST

darryls house is awsome, love it , love the mixes, laughs, different beats to same songs, keep it up we love you and your strenth . live on strong.

T | 6/6/2009, 7:27 pm EST

I like his response to the Britney question. He ignores it and so should everyone else. Daryl has always been a great and real musician.

Angela | 6/6/2009, 8:06 pm EST

Daryl Hall is in a class all his own and he keeps getting better! LFDH is like the dream I always had! I love the variety and the different sides it brings out of Daryl.

Arlene | 6/6/2009, 10:49 pm EST

Daryl and the LFDH is terrific! I don’t think a day goes by without my daily dose of Hall and Oates. Those guys still rock and even after all these years, they are truly amazing musicians!

badJet | 6/7/2009, 11:21 am EST

this was the only interesting piece i found on your page. some silly stuff for sure, but at least honest and soulful.

ninecasey | 6/7/2009, 3:52 pm EST

Great article. I really wish their “War Babies” album–produced by Todd Rundgren would hit CD one day! While Todd has insisted that Hall wrote all of the songs, sonically, it fits very, very well with Rundgren’s “A Wizard, A True Star” and “Todd” albums. It’s really something.

Kurt Jones | 6/8/2009, 10:44 am EST

Daryl, man, you are just so honest and sincere – thanks for the fresh air! The Philly music scene didn’t deserve you, there’s the rest of that truth.

A layed-back, kick your shoes off and stay a while, Midnight Special sort of thing – Daryl’s House ROCKS! Like you.

Dan80 | 6/8/2009, 11:09 am EST

Hadn’t of? I think Daryl would have said “Hadn’t have”! Please keep an eye on what you print. Oh yeah and War Babies is on CD- I’ve got it! AMAZING album!

ReeSansRue | 6/8/2009, 12:56 pm EST

I’m glad to read that my favorite singer is about to make another solo album; I hope an H&O CD is on its heels. Meanwhile, LFDH will tide us over quite well.

Raina | 6/8/2009, 1:24 pm EST

Daryl rocks! ’nuff said. :)

Danny | 6/8/2009, 2:20 pm EST

Live From Daryl’s House is the BEST music show on the web. Where else can you see the Doors, Finger Eleven and Chromeo in one spot for FREE.

CharleneWepner | 6/8/2009, 3:18 pm EST

Daryl Hall is a true artist. Not like most of these ‘won’t remember them in five never mind ten years.”
I only read RS periodically now because for the most part it sucks.

Launatk | 6/8/2009, 5:24 pm EST

Daryl Hall is a magical artist. He has allowed every life experience to enhance the man he is today – authentic and the real thing in music and lin ife. He’s straight-forward about his life’s mission – the music!!! — Not the singing sensation or fad.

Liz | 6/8/2009, 6:36 pm EST

All I can say is this life would not be the same for me without this man’s music! It touches the root of my soul. It’s the real deal for me. For 34 years I have been a faithful follower. Let’s also remember all the good people he has associated with! Keep it coming! You’re simple awesome!

Dawn | 6/8/2009, 6:52 pm EST

I’ve been loving Hall & Oates, loving Daryl Hall, loving John Oates since, 1981 and will keep on loving them til the end!! I think it’s an incredible act of generosity and kindness for Daryl to put on these shows every month and invite the world into his home to watch and listen compliments of Daryl Hall!! Thank you SO much Daryl for continuing to “Make My Dreams” come true for almost 3 decades!!!

Ray | 6/8/2009, 7:15 pm EST

One thing I remember most about high school in northeast Pennsylvania in the mid- and late 80’s is that it was not cool to be an H&O fan… I was surprisingly ridiculed like you wouldn’t believe. Despite the fact that they besically were considered a local band.

I’m glad I stuck to my guns. Something tells me there were more H&O fans than I thought… they just kept it hidden.

Ron Mexico | 6/8/2009, 10:19 pm EST

Great to see Daryl on RollingStone.com. I’ve been a fan for thirty years since I was a kid. To this day “I Can’t Go For That (No Can Do)” remains gangsta as f*ck!!!

Julie O'Brien | 6/9/2009, 11:21 am EST

It’s so nice to see Hall and Oates still at the top; I, like many of their fans have loved them for years; their music has progressed with every year, and is always new and fresh, but still has that Hall and Oates sound, which we all love. They deserve all their success, as they have truly worked hard for it. I will buy their music for as long as they keep producing it, and even when they retire (heaven forbid) I will listen fondly to every song they have written… Thank you Hall and Oates for your music, soundtrack to my life, and many others.
Love

Livefromdarylshouse.com is one of the best Internet shows. I hope eventually a best of CD will be available for download. Looking forward to his new solo CD.

Peggy Garr | 6/11/2009, 12:15 am EST

Each and every episode of LFDH is amazing and unique! Daryl can make any song his own with his “Daryl” style…It’s mesmerizing to watch Daryl sing…especially when your watching LFDH…I feel like I am right there in his house sitting back and enjoying the fun listening to the great sounds of Daryl Hall! It’s a warm and fuzzy feeling! Thanks so much Daryl!

Hall & Oates have been consistently outstanding for over 40 years now and they haven’t lost an ounce of ability (or a lock of hair for that matter). RS makes a good article but for all that, they saw fit to put Britney Spears and Prince albums in their all-time album list but not a single H&O album. “Along The Red Ledge” belongs on top. Where’s “H20″, “Abandoned Luncheonette” and plenty of the rest of them?

livefromdarylshouse is a great internet music show on the 15th of every month…I would encourange anyone who hasn’t seen it yet to give it a view. It’s pretty amazing stuff. Kevin Rudolf episode and Gym Class Hereos episodes are way cool.

TRUTH BE TOLD | 6/20/2009, 5:57 pm EST

Daryl Hall is a MALE WHORE! He has no respect for himself nor any ONE else. He has taken advantage and impreganated more female fans; that the Z-ROCK clip is laughable at best. The majority of folks like him because he is typical blond, blue eyed good looking man. He wasn’t FAITHFUL to his wife Byrnn, nor longtime mate Sarah (to take your girlfriends sister to bed)is the ultimate betrayal. NOW he’s gonna break Amanda’s heart. And the fans think they will change him LMAO!! ENOUGH of this SEX MANIAC!!

Anonymous | 6/27/2009, 12:25 am EST

Daryl Hall has no respect for anyone and runs his mouth way too much.

Mertie | 6/30/2009, 2:11 pm EST

Wish Daryl would drop the facial fur and let us see his fabulous face again! His music certainly has stood the test of time, he only gets better and better. I’d love to see him have Todd Rundgren on LFDH!

Patti | 7/1/2009, 7:43 pm EST

I would like to see H&O together on the road again doing what they do so well together. They can bring their guest in when they do their shows. When you are in music, the “Road” is in your blood. You stop when you drop. BB King is in his 80’s and still kickin’ it.

Drew | 7/2/2009, 1:11 am EST

We want to see John more often as well. H&O=Hall&Oates.Sometimes I think H without the O=nothing and O without the H=nothing. What happened to Geoff Byrd?

Looking forward to the new cd – love the solo stuff! LFDH is the highlight of my month.
A very, very underrated male vocalist.

Just call up You Tube and watch the live versions of Method of Modern Love, Someone Like You and Everytime You Go Away to see TRUE TALENT: I WISH I were as talented as this man!

I so look forward to the monthly installments of “Live From Daryl’s House”; the latest one featuring Todd Rundgren is absolutely amazing! These guys belong in the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame; I can’t believe they’re not already. But at least they have a boxed set coming out that’s a more complete retrospective of their amazing careers. Hope it finally wakes some folks up!

Mack | 9/28/2009, 3:50 am EST

I have loved Hall & Oats since the 1970’s,beginning with “Sarah Smile”. I was a young man at the time and ‘In Love’,and so that song really spoke to me and still does now that I am older because when I hear it it brings back all of those old memories. “Live From Daryl’s House” is a ‘Brilliant Idea’,and I never miss a show. I only wish I could sit in on one of them. Daryl,’Thank You So Much’ for all of the truly great music over the years. And “Sweet” with Todd Rundgren, which I’d never heard before is ‘FANTASTIC’! I’ve re-played it so many times my computer’s ‘SMOKIN’!

Tim | 10/20/2009, 5:33 am EST

Daryl Hall is one of the most underrated vocalists of our time. Sacred Songs, his collaboration with Robert Fripp, is one of my favorite records, ever. (And I was very excited a few years back when a new edition of Fripp’s Exposure included the original Hall vocals.) Rock on, sir.

Shannon | 10/22/2009, 7:32 am EST

Daryl is absolutely an amazing singer and can’t think of anyone, in my mind, who has a better voice. I fell in love with Hall and Oates when I was ten, when H20 came out and I remember how uncool it was to like them in elementary school. At ten, I went back and bought all their old stuff on vinyl. I have been a faithful listener since and now my 4 1/2 year old daughters favorite song is “Kiss On My List.” I get this absolutely weird feeling like I am hearing myself as a kid when I hear her singing it from the backseat. I remember as a kid never really liking the songs John sang on and I love it that my daughter loves his singing just as much as Daryl’s.
