“Guitar Hero: Van Halen” Trailer Rolls Out at E3 Expo

6/4/09, 5:21 pm EST

The trailer for Guitar Hero: Van Halen that’s screening at the E3 Expo in Los Angeles has hit the Net, and while there’s no official word whether former members Sammy Hagar, Michael Anthony and Gary Cherone make appearances in the game, the band’s current lineup — Eddie Van Halen, David Lee Roth, Alex Van Halen and Wolfgang Van Halen — are the only ones to appear as avatars in the clip. It’s already been a controversial week for VH, as our interview with Eddie Van Halen touched a nerve with Anthony, who spoke out again to reiterate that he never quit the band.

The trailer shows the band in spandex and long hair like it’s 1979 and Van Halen II just came out, then in short hair and plain ol’ pants — and Wolfgang stays a teenager in both scenarios. He’s like Richard on Lost.

(Don’t miss our list of the 50 Best Rock & Roll Video Games of All Time.)

While the game features 25 classic Van Halen songs and “3 Signature Eddie Van Halen Guitar Solos,” it’s unclear if anything but the David Lee Roth-era songs are mined, since it would be strange to see digital Roth singing “Why Can’t This Be Love?” Other artists with songs in the game include Queen, Weezer, Queens of the Stone Age, the Offspring and Blink-182. As Rock Daily reported last month, Guitar Hero: Van Halen will be released in the latter half of 2009, along with Activision games Guitar Hero 5, Band Hero and DJ Hero. Earlier this year, the company released Guitar Hero: Metallica.

The game’s track list hasn’t yet been revealed, but more leaked footage reveals that both 1984’s “Jump” and “Panama” will be in the game. Video of one E3er’s butchering of “Jump” is right here:

What a fucking wanker in that second video.

I’m sure Eddie took Michael Anthony out of the whole thing and stuck Wolfgang in. Which means, I have no interest.

Michael Anthony contributed to the Van Halen sound and look. He has no right to be so disrespected.

Master V | 6/4/2009, 6:30 pm EST

ABOUT FREAKIN TIME!!!

“HEY MAN, THAT SUIT IS YOU”

six-string Pete | 6/4/2009, 6:43 pm EST

yeah…About freaking time…if they had the real band in there.

The Beatles Rock Band — now that’s a game worth getting!!

That is to weird looking for me. Not a huge VH fan but it is odd to see Wolfgang with a 1984 VH. They are messed up individuals to totally cut a person who was a big part of their sound. I really hope Michael Anthony has great success with his new band just to stick it to EVH.

Alex Van Halen is Satan.

Eddymon | 6/5/2009, 11:06 am EST

Mike Anthony quit Van Halen and deserves to be cut from this game. He should STFU too and stop complaining in interviews about being fired.

Anonymous | 6/5/2009, 12:16 pm EST

Fuck this guitar hero bullshit already! I want REAL rock and roll. Not a GAME that a bunch of spoiled brats can sit around playing to impress their friends or significant others. Pick up a REAL instrument and get up off your asses and do something with your lives. This generation is such a joke and all we do is keep spoon feeding them new technology so the real thing can be forgotten….bullshit.

Joe | 6/5/2009, 3:12 pm EST

Ah Eddymon, you’re an ass here too huh?

to anonymous | 6/5/2009, 10:50 pm EST

DUDE FUCK OFF! i play a real instrument, bass guitar. ive been playing for a year now and i started playing guitar hero when guitar hero I came out, then i got addicted, got better, beat them all on expert…and about the time that guitar hero world tour was being made i picked up the bass guitar and never stoped. so even though i may sit on my ass all day playing every instrument on expert (including the metallica drums on expert+) the game brought me to the real music by getting me excited and wanting to learn an instrument…SO FUCK OFF ASSHOLE!

Anonymous | 6/6/2009, 2:28 am EST

And how many albums has Wolfgang recorded with VH? Big VH fan but this is gonna screw things up…I can understand wanting to do the Roth era only but without Mikie?

Sexy lexi | 6/6/2009, 10:57 am EST

Roth looks sexy in the game too!!

axl rose | 6/6/2009, 12:46 pm EST

No panama?

DJB | 6/6/2009, 9:33 pm EST

I thought it was strange to see Robert Truijilo with a 1986 Metallica. Now Wolvegang is in a 1984 Van Halen, that’s even stranger.

linker239 | 6/8/2009, 12:59 am EST

I know that Anthony not being here is crap, but he quit of his on accord, therefore VH has the right of finding a replacement. Besides its almost the orginal VH atleast we have Roth back. I saw these guys at little rock and it was insane. It beat AC/DC and that is hard to do.

Josh | 6/8/2009, 9:33 pm EST

Forget about Mike he quit the band to be with Sammy and sell hot sauce. VAN HALEN !!!!! WOOHOO !!!!

Anonymous | 6/8/2009, 10:40 pm EST

this is true oversaturation. why do we have to pay full price when we can buy tese songs on rock band dlc? what?!?!? over 500 songs in rock band and not 1 by van halen? no wonder why there making this game

Tony | 6/8/2009, 10:47 pm EST

I’m a VH fan, it is weird to cut off Michael Anthony and Sammy Hagar. The band with Sammy took another dimension that was not going to take with Diamond Dave as front man. If you count the hits songs with DD and SH, Who got the most? Michael Anthony have the right to be part of the game.As for Wolfgang, it’s Eddie’s son, so he’s been blessed and no one is going to take it out of the band. If I had the decision on the game, I started out with the band as in 1984, then the quitting of Diamond Dave, Sammy gets in, then out with Michael Anthony and finally the band right now.

ihaterockandroll | 6/9/2009, 1:21 pm EST

Rock Band/Guitar Hero; what a joke. So you’re an expert at pressing buttons, whoo hoo!

Arjay | 6/10/2009, 6:39 pm EST

I’m a huge Van Halen fan and was very pleased to hear that Activision would be coming out with a Guitar Hero: Van Halen. However, that excitement has been spoiled by the news that Michael Anthony would not be a playable character in the game. Let’s forget about Hagar and Cherone. I understand why they’d want to focus on the original Roth-era VH discography. But I’m soured by the omission of one of the founding members of the band AND the guy that played all those amazing bass lines on the songs to begin with! Who cares if Michael Anthony left the band on his own accord, a topic that is still under debate. He still deserves to be a playable character in the game, at the very least. I’m not saying leave Wolfgang out completely (though I’m not sure he deserves a spot in the game line-up), because I’m sure his presence will appeal to the younger crowd. I plan on boycotting this game unless (or until) they include MA. Van Halen fans unite! I invite you to join me in this boycott until Eddie VH and the people at Activision give credit where credit is due. Mikey, we miss you!

Gav | 6/11/2009, 7:12 am EST

yeah micheal anthony was (much like alex) key to the supporting of the band. Without his great bass lines and interesting vocal input the band would not be anywhere near as good.

also, video 2 = what a tw*t . :D

ANTHONY5150 | 6/14/2009, 3:30 pm EST

MICHAEL ANTHONY IS THE GREATEST BACK GROUND VOCALISTS IN HISTORY,THATS IS WHATS GOING TO BE HARD TO REPLACE,YOU HAVE TO KNOW THIS IF YOUR A REAL VH FAN!!!!

D'oh | 6/18/2009, 4:43 pm EST

Maybe Van Halen should change their name to Van Sucken for all the crap they put Michael Anthony through. Plus any music they put out now would probably suck as well. Eddie should’ve stayed drunk, their music was better.

Rocco | 6/18/2009, 11:44 pm EST

Not having Michael Anthony is totally insane. Whether were the reasons why Anthony quited the band, there’s no reason to take him out the VH legacy. It’s silly pretending that he wasn’t there in the 80, All my respect to MA. I’ve learnt a lot from his bass lines

kahafa | 6/20/2009, 11:34 pm EST

Eddie Van Halen must be hanging out with Gene Simmons from Kiss and reading his book “How to rip off your fans and screw your former bandmates over.”

Someone should send him a bottle of liquor with a note that says you were better guitarist and person when you were drinking!!

Diamond Dave | 6/23/2009, 7:57 pm EST

VAN HALEN RULES!
WITHOUT EDDIE THIS BAND WOULD HAVE SUCKED>>>GET A CLUE!
EVH ROX!

adam_york | 6/29/2009, 4:50 am EST

can you play it on ps2

Austin | 7/6/2009, 12:21 pm EST

Van Halen is the best!! I’m not bummed Mike isn’t in it. I just wanna listen to some Van Halen music while playing it. It’s gonna be a blast!! I hope the tracklist will be good too.

Austin | 7/6/2009, 12:26 pm EST

It also seems more people are mad about Mike not being in the game then Sammy. Man people are getting angry over a video game!! How pathetic… But I guess it sort of proves that Eddie doesn’t care about his fans.

Bill | 7/9/2009, 1:47 pm EST

I like all incarnations of Van Halen (EXCEPT Van Halen III–I try to pretend that was just a bad dream)–so I’m disappointed that Sammy and Mike won’t be represented in the game–just sucks…but I’ll still get the game—and hopefully it comes with a choice of different Van Halen guitar controllers!

Fingers are hurting.... | 7/11/2009, 3:55 pm EST

How hard is this one going to be???
I remember the first ten times i failed hot for teacher on expert I threw my controller across the room…

Xero | 7/21/2009, 9:38 pm EST

If this is a TRUE Van Halen game, there are some songs that had BETTER be in it…Love Walks In, Dreams, Jump, 5150, Why Can’t This Be Love, and I just don’t get why there HAVE to be other bands in a Van Halen game. I am still VERY pissed off that in the Aerosmith one, three of their BIGGEST HITS OF ALL TIME are not in it, them being Crying, Crazy and Amazing. I mean, I truly felt like I got cheated. If Love Walks In isn’t included, I will seriously NEVER BUY ANOTHER GAME AGAIN. I have been PRAYING that Van Halen would make one since GH1, and I will seriously sell the games I have (every one,) my 5 guitars, drums, and EVERYTHING if I have to “create” them on a game myself. I have no patience for doing all the work, not that I could do so anyway, because I am not some 13-year-old kid born with a computer keyboard and mouse in his hands. I’m 33, and should NOT have to do it myself. I still don’t get how Aerosmith could just IGNORE three of their top-sellers and most popular songs. If Dreams isn’t in the Van Halen game, I will seriously picket the stores and do whatever I can to hurt the company. Ignoring popular songs and replacing them with “filler” songs shows complete and utter disregard for fans.

mohawk1026 | 8/3/2009, 9:48 pm EST

I love van halen so much and once i heard that GHVH was coming out i was so happy. Eruption better be on it tho

Connell | 8/10/2009, 6:41 pm EST

Van Halen is the bomb. I have grew up listening to his music, so this outta be good. Plus the solos are goin 2 be sweet. Long live Eddie Van Halen!!!!

Jr | 9/9/2009, 8:13 pm EST

NO MIKE OR SAMMY I WILL PASS ON THIS ONE EVH SUCKS

lbs86 | 9/12/2009, 8:40 pm EST

I was excited when I saw that there was going to be a van halen installment to guitar hero.I planned on getting it for my daughter – who loves the game & has been able to become familiar with so much music that so many of us grew up with. However, when I watched the promotional trailer for the game, I was surpised that Michael Anthony & Sammy Hagar were not represented within the game. The absense of their characters & the associated catalog of music is a sore disapointment. I could only imagine the motivations that spawned those decisions. Its laughable to see Wolfgang wearing the outfit that his dad wore when he (Wolfgang) wasn’t even born yet. Its a slap in the face to the band members and the fans. Its obvious that the all mighty dollar and overblown egos don’t mix. I use to be a huge Van Halen fan, but as the years have progressed, I have become more and more disenchanted by the behavior of Eddie. I am sure he is in a position to where he does not care, but its a sad state from a fan’s view point. I wish Michael Anthony & Sammy Hagar the best. I am sure they are firm on their feet. However, since I appreciate good music I will go listen some of the new Dokken. Its great stuff.

aceman | 9/22/2009, 10:14 pm EST

Disappointed to say the least no Michael or Sammy is a joke.Dave is a great showman but Sammy is a much better musician and Michaels backround vocals added to the VH sound.Goes to show how much of a self righteous ass Eddie really is.Sammy you Michael deserve better and got it with Chickenfoot you guys rock and have a even better guitarist and a class act in Joe Satriani Eddie sucks compared to Joe

to JR | 9/23/2009, 7:08 am EST

FUCK YOU EDDIE VAN HALEN IS ONE OF THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME SO FUCK OFF

shotgunpopsikl | 9/30/2009, 2:16 am EST

Enough about Mike getting punked. He quit the band back in 06 and has been touring with Sammy. Boo Hoo get over it. He is a bassist an ok one. Quick name one song that you can here his bass prevelence. Got it “Your No Good” Van Halen 2 1979. His claim to fame has been that JD bass he has been carrying around since Fair Warning. Give wolfie a break. The kids first show was at 17 years of age in front of 15000. Deal with it!

shotgunpopsikl | 9/30/2009, 2:22 am EST

P.S Seen them with and without Dave numerous times. Sorry kiddies Diamond Dave blows sammy off the stage. Seriously are you all kidding me. I’ll bet you bank that Chicken Foots album will NOT go platinum nor will they sell out any large venues. Sissies!!!

Anonymous | 10/26/2009, 12:04 pm EST

I saw Van Halen in concert in 2008 before they canceled the remaining shows. It was the best concert I have ever seen. It was also the only Van Halen concert of my life which my make my following comments bias. I like a few Van Haggar songs but Diamond Dave blew me away with his stay presence. As a fan I’m fine with the current band members. Most of the Haggar songs don’t have much guitar anyway. All of the Diamond Dave songs is where Eddie tore it up. I was shock to see Wolfie as the bassist. They could of at least had Michael somewhere on the game. As a fan I won’t miss Sammy on the game.

murderer | 10/28/2009, 1:42 pm EST

this game will be amazing i love VAN HALEN
