X’s Exene Cervenka Reveals She Has Multiple Sclerosis

Exene Cervenka, co-lead vocalist and original member of famed Los Angeles punk band X, revealed in a statement today that she is suffering from Multiple Sclerosis. “After some months of not feeling 100% healthy, I recently had some medical tests run and the prognosis is that I am suffering from Multiple Sclerosis,” Cervenka said. “Apparently, it has been affecting me for quite some time.”

(Look back at pioneering punks X, in photos.)

In a sad coincidence, X announced just last month that they were embarking on the “X on TRL” tour with the purpose of raising money for the Sweet Relief fund, a charity founded in 1992 by singer-songwriter Victoria Williams, who was also diagnosed with MS, to aid to uninsured musicians. “Although this is obviously unfortunate news, I am choosing to see the positive in it. I, and X as a band, have supported the Sweet Relief charity since the mid-1990s; the irony of this is not lost on any of us,” Cervenka said in the statement. (And for the record, the “TRL” tour has nothing to do with MTV; the set lists are all done by “total request.”)

“While this diagnosis will most certainly mean some changes for me, personally, it will not affect my commitments to the current X U.S. tour, nor will it affect my solo album that is slated for release this fall on Bloodshot Records,” Cervenka added. “My focus will certainly be on maintaining my health — many people remain strong and continue to live their lives as productively as they had before an MS diagnosis and I plan to be one of those people.”

Last month, X singer-bassist John Doe, who was once married to Cervenka, said he was working on songs for a possible new X album, the band’s first since 1993’s hey Zeus!. In January, Cervenka and Doe were joined onstage by Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder during an Obama inauguration party in Seattle.

Devastating news. Not a praying guy but sending all the best wishes in the world to Exene. Caught a Knitters show in March that is still probably the best show I’ve seen this year. Love to all.

This is the saddest news I’ve heard since the death of Lux Interior. Still, best wishes for a long and productive life to Exene…

I second that, seen both X and the Knitters throughout the years, and have all there records (how awesome was it that Johnny Zoom came back! Saw his first show back in Boston, and he was grinning ear to ear!), here’s hoping the disease goes easy on her, and a long and productive musical career still in front of her.

Still the best live show i have been to in years. And such a sweatheart. Hope all goes well

God how can you idiots be so horrible. I hope something this tragic befalls someone you love and see what insipid remarks you have to make then.

Heartbreaking news. Too bad there are some who think that looking like some stereotype is more important than being one of the greatest and hardest rocking women in the music business. Obviously, they have never been to an X show b/c I don’t know anyone that has that doesn’t leave a believer that X is one of America’s greatest bands.

Keep living your life as though you did not have MS – check out drug TYSABRI – IT WORKS.

Eh, “Stan the Man” and “XU” are the most common thing on the web, young males with low self esteem who lash out. That nagging sense of self hatred will eat at them through out their lives, as they age, get fat, have kids who grow into self loathing young men….they’ll die bitter, alone, their lives meaning less than nothing. Try to remember this Stan and XU….remember it as you lie on your death bed. And when you die you’ll be forgotten instantly…as though you never even lived :)

She is one of the greats and I know that she’ll continue to be one of the greatest.

X are a great band. But Exene has always been unfriendly. Actually she’s been awfully bitter and awful throughout the years to me and others.

I dont wish to see anyone sick. Maybe though this will soften her up and she will become more of a HUMAN and less a hateful diva she has acted like. Extend the courtesy to others that has been given so generously to you Exene.

Good luck.

This is very sad news. She is a great singer in a great band, and I hope that her health holds up so she can continue to perform for many years. I saw X play about 24 years ago, and am planning on seeing them again next week (am really looking forward to it). Rock on Exene.

OK so she’s no TAYLOR SWIFT but why judge a musician on looks alone? I thnk she is very reative regardless if she is no beauty.

Rick | 6/3/2009, 12:45 pm EST

Exene is a survivor. This is little less than a mere distraction on her path through life. We’ll be seeing Exene for years to come.

re:James G | 6/3/2009, 7:48 pm EST

I agree 100%! While it’s true Exene is no living goddess like Taylor Swift or Scarlett Johansson she is indeed very creative regardless of her frumpy looks. Not everyone ( sadly!!! ) can look like Taylor Swift.

I’m seeing X at 930 on Friday and I’ll give a special shout out to Exene. I’ve loved X since I bought my first album of theirs in the early 1980’s. A great American band and I’m so happy to see them touring still. Long live Exene.

I spent a year with exene in 1998 and she changed my life forever, she remains close to my heart and I will always love her…nobody gets over exene, and I surely haven’t…she is pure gold and one of the greatest gifts god has given this earth

susie | 6/4/2009, 5:10 pm EST

Is not the end of the world. Im a Pilot.
Was diagnosed with MS 2 years ago and have continued to live my life pretty much the same. Make sure you have a great Neurologist that knows MS and start medicine rught away. You are not alone!!!!!!

SLAYERSWINE | 6/6/2009, 9:29 am EST

The years have not been kind to her.
Just look at that picture…YIKES!
I am sure Viggo Mortensen is glad he bailed on that marriage.
Hell I’d bang Schmiegel before her…

Very sad news, but Exene is going to be fine. She has so many people thinking of her and sending her good wishes. I love her like a family member. Exene has been an enormous influence in my life since I first saw X play at the Roxy in 1980. I love you, Exene. Take care.

Just saw X Thursday night in Chicago – a BURNING show. Exene and her voice were in fine form, no signs of any physical problems – I know she’ll get through this, but I couldn’t help but sadly wonder if this was the last time I’d ever see X live – this is one of the greatest bands of all time. Oh, and all you TAYLOR SWIFT devotees – get a friggin’ life – Exene has forgotten morre than TS will ever know

Jeff Pospisil | 6/29/2009, 8:20 am EST

Best wishes to Exene, she has been such an influence on me as a songwriter/musician. My favorite “punk Rock” girl as well as the most exciting female in rock!!!!

God bless Exene! I saw her at USC’s Town and Gown in 1983 I think and have been smitten ever since. Exene you have courage and talent! I’m wishing you all the best!!!

Bonnie B | 8/14/2009, 9:07 pm EST

Was never into punk until I saw Exene on tv, hey I said, there’s an old broad like me who can really belt out a song, we are the same age and all I can say is “go girl” and get well! Love from the BC Kootenays just north of Idaho!

Angelic Urchin | 10/2/2009, 9:14 pm EST

“Exene is frumpy? She’s no Taylor Swift goddess?” Any of you realize how skin deep you are being??

OUKnow | 10/23/2009, 11:42 pm EST

Anonymous-I am pretty sure that I know who you are. And you deserved ALL of it!!

She is a wonderful caring person and I wish her the very best with her career and her health.

And if anyone deserves to be a DIVA, its her. Hell, she has paid her dues.

Diva it up girl!
