Pearl Jam Debut “Backspacer” Track “Got Some,” Cover Art on Conan O’Brien’s “Tonight Show”

6/2/09, 8:00 am EST

Conan O’Brien spent his first evening at the Tonight Show desk yesterday, kicking off his run as the show’s host by quizzing Will Ferrell about L.A. culture, taking over a tram on the Universal Studios tour and bringing back onetime sidekick Andy Richter as announcer. But the highlight of the show was definitely a special appearance by Pearl Jam, a band known for its longtime relationship with former Tonight host Jay Leno’s rival, David Letterman. The White Stripes performed on Conan’s final Late Night show in February.

“Launching a show like this takes a lot of hard work and one of the things that has sustained me over the past three months was knowing that at the end of our first show I’d get to watch a performance by one of the greatest rock bands in the world,” O’Brien said. Announcing they were playing the “world premiere of a song from their forthcoming album, Backspacer” while holding up cover art featuring a human head and torso split down the middle with one half’s insides exposed, Conan introduced Pearl Jam, who immediately kicked into a new track featuring heavy, layered guitar work and some major Matt Cameron drum fills. Eddie Vedder’s vocals were a bit low in the mix, so it was difficult to discern the song’s lyrics, but Conan’s Tonight Show official Website indicates the name is “Get Some.” The band’s reps have since told RS the song title is actually “Got Some.”

“This Modern World” comic strip author and artist Tom Tomorrow posted on his Website that he has been working on Pearl Jam’s album artwork, and that Conan showed off a part of a larger whole.

Yesterday, Billboard confirmed that Backspacer — the band’s Brendan O’Brien-produced autumn LP — would be sold via a combination of deals including a retail partnership with Target. The now label-free Pearl Jam is also close to finalizing deals with an online vendor, a gaming company, a mobile partner and a network of indie retailers according to their longtime manager Kelly Curtis.

Backspacer was also the name of the 375-kilogram female sea turtle Pearl Jam sponsored in the Great Turtle Race, an April event that tracked 11 leatherbacks traveling from Canada to the Caribbean to lay their eggs. The competition (which lasted two weeks and was tracked online) raised money for Conservation International, a group that seeks to find a balance between humans and nature. Backspacer came in first place, beating R.E.M.’s Nightswimmer.

SELL OUT’s. The unwavering antiestablishment band has finally sold its soul to the corporate machine. I wonder what Eddie will rant about now during the shows. I guess we’ll soon be getting that Visa commercial featuring the song Alive.

Sanchez | 6/2/2009, 8:51 am EST

Great tune, they were due.

dot30 | 6/2/2009, 9:04 am EST

I truly don’t think Pearl Jam would sell out. They make plenty of money through live concerts & album sales & have a legion of fans across the world akin to the Grateful Dead’s Deadheads that will try to get their hands on most anything they put out (including me!). You want to talk about the corporate machine? What do you think a record label is?

FJ | 6/2/2009, 9:13 am EST

@Fail:

Oh yeah, because a record label is soooo not a big corporation… I believe Sony is much bigger corporation than Target.

Chris | 6/2/2009, 9:22 am EST

That song is awesome and catchy at the first listen. Also, Rolling Stone, it is not the complete album cover. On Tom Tomorrow’s website, he said it is part of the album cover, not the whole.

Also “Fail”…they are not sellouts at all.

RJ | 6/2/2009, 9:49 am EST

Fail – what the fuck do you care what Eddie rants about? you won’t be there – at least i hope not.

Great Song! | 6/2/2009, 10:10 am EST

Pearl Jam is just finding new ways to go about selling their music. This is a good thing because for the last 50 years, music sales were completely controlled by the record companies. Now bands are finding new ways to do it, which gives them greater creativity and freedom.

So what that if it’s Target? Would you prefer that they hand deliver burned CDs to your local record store? Oooh that’s cool and edgy, so anti-establishment! Grow the F up, they have families to feed and bills to pay.

Pearl Jam has always taken pride in their album art and need a venue to distribute that too, so you need a store like Target. And no, a PDF isn’t the same as holding the actual CD (or preferably vinyl) in your hands.

And if you don’t like it don’t buy it. No one is trying to convince you that PJ is cool.

scott | 6/2/2009, 10:14 am EST

what is a sell out now days. judge each person and band on their own merits.just to remain a band and keep giving us output is all I ask of eddie and the boys.

Fail | 6/2/2009, 10:24 am EST

Keep it coming you phony apologists. I’m sure you are the same people that have always sat there and said “Pearl Jam would never do that” every damn time a band made a similar decision. How is Eddie going to comtinue his questsave the small business record stores now?

You want to defend them to the bitter end and I understand that, but deep down you know this is a smack in the face to everything they have stood for and ranted about for YEARS.

You know I’m right. Hate all you want, but you know I’m right.

MB | 6/2/2009, 10:25 am EST

The song last night was awesome! I love everything Pearl Jam puts out but last nights energy was truley vintage PEARL JAM!

MB | 6/2/2009, 10:27 am EST

Like Conan said one of the greatest rock and roll bands in the world! Last nights song was amazing! Vintage PJ!

to Fail | 6/2/2009, 10:46 am EST

No, it isn’t.

Every single album they have produced has been sold in big, corporate stores. By doing this, they are keeping it from generating revenue for less favorable corporations (see Wal-Mart).

Think about the new industry for a second. How can a band as big as Pearl Jam get widespread physical distribution without a label? If you can answer that reasonably, I’ll consider your side a bit more.

Fail | 6/2/2009, 10:51 am EST

To FJ,

Not sure if you’re smart enough to realize that you just made my point.

PJ leaves corporate giant Sony to release their next album independently so that they can have full control over how their music is distributed – Hooray PJ

The result – They sign an exclusive agreement with a corporate giant to distribute their music – LOL

To RJ,

I have been there, from the beginning. If you actually had you would be just as upset about this as I am.

Keep it coming apologists.

Rich CT | 6/2/2009, 10:56 am EST

Are you kidding me?? What a pc of garbage that song was!! Nothing original, lame lyrics. They havent written a decent song since Vitology, loved them early on, but their new stuff is garbage.

Boner | 6/2/2009, 11:01 am EST

The song Pearl Jam played on Conan sounded like TV on the Radio’s Wolf Like Me which sounds like Rebel Yell by Billy Idol.

c | 6/2/2009, 11:04 am EST

When was the last time Rich listened to a Pearl Jam album? Probably right around Vitalogy.

The performance last nice was a bit rough though. Sound was a little screwy–vocals hard to hear–guitar too loud–bad acoustics. Whatever.

Snaves | 6/2/2009, 11:11 am EST

Its not an exclusive deal with Target. Target is the only major store selling it, but it will still be sold at independent record stores as well.

Swingline | 6/2/2009, 11:13 am EST

While watching that performance last night, the last thing running through my mind was the deal they struck with Target.

And considering The Who, Sabbath and Zeppelin have all been featured in major ad campaigns in the last five years, not a bad company of sell-outs to be a part of.

Have loved Pearl Jam since day 1 but don’t sit around like a drooling puppy waiting for Eddie to deliver me the next set of life lessons. He’d be the first to say that his rants are just one man talking, and anybody who blindly worships that probably shouldn’t.

The song was great, can’t wait for the rest…

Brandon | 6/2/2009, 11:18 am EST

The song didn’t impress me very much. Also, I’m not sure what Rollingstone is talking about but PJ was for sure not the “highlight” of the show. Will Ferrell was much more entertaining!

Fail | 6/2/2009, 11:22 am EST

To “to Fail”,

I do see your point and it’s a good one. I would be able to accept it better if PJ didn’t make such a big deal out of the fact that they were leaving the corporate machine. Maybe I just expect more out of them than their casual fans. I expected innovation. Instead we got the same old thing disguised as control over distribution.

Boris Dignan | 6/2/2009, 11:29 am EST

It’s important to note that “Backspacer” will not be an exclusive Target release.

Pearl Jam are also in talks with several independent record stores, Internet, and mobile.

I believe this tactic is called “selling music to your fans”.

-Not Selling Out-

I’m so sick of people throwing the bastard word around like they are some kind guardian of musical integrity.

It never ceases to amaze me how clueless people are.

Mrmojorisinca | 6/2/2009, 11:32 am EST

wow..
when the boys start wearing target logos come talk..until then its a smart move, if you actually read, all small indi stores will still be allowed to carry the album, Target was the only Big corp that would allow this..
now shutup and just listen and if you don’t like what you hear stop..becuase I’m fairly certain no one in PJ has a gun to your head :)

Fail | 6/2/2009, 11:42 am EST

To Boris Dignan,

Please enlighten me as to what “selling out” is.

To Mrmojorisinca,

“when the boys start wearing target logos come talk” As a matter of fact I’m sure we will see that logo several times during the PJ approved Target commerical.

Mike Stanton | 6/2/2009, 12:04 pm EST

Pearl Jam = SELLOUTS.

Loved em when they stuck to their guns. Now, they’re like the rest of the dinosaurs who can’t sell without big box retailers. Target and Pearl Jam. Wow. So edgy.

Trapdoor | 6/2/2009, 12:13 pm EST

I can’t speak for anyone else on here, but I listen to Pearl Jam because of their MUSIC. I don’t care about their views on record labels, distribution, or even presidential candidates for that matter. It’s great that they feel so strongly about what they believe, but what they believe will not get me to buy a CD. Who cares if you think they sold out by allowing target to sell their next album (how would you expect it to get sold without someone selling it anyway?). I’d go down to Sony and buy it from them if that’s where I could, because its about the music.

Javier | 6/2/2009, 12:14 pm EST

Before i get shread to pieces, let me just say im a HUGE PJ fan.
However i feel like they went backwards yesterday. First off, theyre OLD they should face it! They honestly looked like losers yesterday.
I think they are trying too hard to sound what they sound like instead of just playing what comes to mind.
They should play by their age. Yield, now that was a great album cuz you could see how much the music progressed as they got older.
Ofcourse this is just my opinion and im not trying to indult them.

jammer | 6/2/2009, 12:14 pm EST

They’re releasing the album on their own. To do so they need to have deals in place with stores to sell it. Target is the “big” retailer with whom PJ has agreed to work with.

PJFAN4LIFE | 6/2/2009, 12:20 pm EST

It is simply about the music, not the political rants, label, distribution avenues…you people need to put on a pair of headphones and shut up.

A | 6/2/2009, 12:24 pm EST

Fucking lame i’ll be honest. The deal and the tune. Not sure what dissapointed me more yesterday but i have to say after anxiously waiting yesterday’s performance since the day it was announced, that was certainly a let down.

As a young musician and having so much respect for pearl jam and what they have stood for, yesterday was probably one of the most shocking days i’ve experienced in the world of music.

From a musical standpoint, that song was crap. Strait up. Was expecting something great, groundbreaking, aaannndd.. nope. FAIL. Everyone keeps ranting about this target shit, which i guess served as a pretty good distraction from the fact that last night was one of the most dissapointing pearl jam performances i’ve ever witnessed. Lame tune, lame lyrics, and what the fuck was going on w/ mike’s tone? It sounded just about as weak and airy as a ds1 blown though a pocket amp. what the fuck man.

A | 6/2/2009, 12:26 pm EST

IN ADDITION, not sure if anyone noticed this but the tune goes over the same progression as Katy Perry’s “I kissed a girl”. Just thought i should point that out.

Sanchez | 6/2/2009, 12:26 pm EST

One song off an album of many, and they’re terrible? This is foolishness. Best live show you’ll ever see.

A | 6/2/2009, 12:30 pm EST

Don’t get me wrong, pearl jam is one of my favorite bands to ever exist. I fucking love them, and they’re a hell of a live show. And that right there is why I am so disappointed. Cmon now what the fuck..

A | 6/2/2009, 12:44 pm EST

Shuda played leash…

Danny | 6/2/2009, 12:47 pm EST

So let me get this straight, any band who sells albums in a big store is a sellout? Well I guess every band in the history of the world is a sellout.

Last I checked you can go buy 10 or Vs in a Target store.

Who the hell cares where you buy a record, its about the music.

A | 6/2/2009, 12:59 pm EST

it is about the music, and to be honest the music last night was pretty damn disappointing. There was nothing special about that tune, the words were pretty lame and the song was just damn basic. Nothing against simplicity but this wasnt the tune pj wanted to use as a first peak into the new record. Something interesting like an “I am mine” esc song would have been nice. Especially after the work eddie did with into the wild.

In addition, the band looked uncomfortable last night. Matt had a great performance for sure, that was the nicest part to see. But mike looked like he was trying wayyy to hard on his stage presence with the lack of energy of pearl jam’s usual crowd and it just looked un natural.

Really hope to see a good record come out of this, I’ve been excited. However last night was a disappointment and a bit alarming to be honest.

tom | 6/2/2009, 1:00 pm EST

After paying huge service charges now, you can’t tell me they aren’t right about ticketmaster!

Fail | 6/2/2009, 1:05 pm EST

Danny,

This isn’t all that complex. They leave the record label because they want to control distribution and not be part of the machine, then turn around and make the same exact deal that a record label would make.

Zach | 6/2/2009, 1:14 pm EST

a. Their deal with Target isn’t exclusive. You’ll still be able to get the record at your local independent record store, I guarantee it.

b. Sony, who they’ve had a record deal with for going on 20 years, is (as others have already pointed out) a far bigger corporate giant than Target.

b1. They’ve stuck more to their principles when it comes to “selling out” than any other major rock band I can think of over the past twenty years.

c. You can’t complain about the sound on a late night talk show, they all have notoriously bad sound.

d. I actually enjoyed the song quite a bit.

Rpaq | 6/2/2009, 1:26 pm EST

Agree with those who think the music was a bit disappointing yesterday. Not that it was bad but they sounded like a band that tries to prove they can still rock hard. And I don’t think PJ are at their best when they rock hard.

I’ve always preferred their softest songs. Thumbing my Way, Given to fly, Whislist, Daughter, Ederly woman, Man of the hour, I am mine, Off he goes etc…

Rob | 6/2/2009, 1:30 pm EST

Great song.
Pearl Jam and Oasis are the last of the great rock bands…….

Mrmojorisinca | 6/2/2009, 1:30 pm EST

to Fail:

The Commercial is not for Target Alone, it’s for prompting the Album..I know when In Rainbows was released to the stores I saw a commercial with the album cover..So they did a longer live thing that wasn’t ONLY for Target but a Documentary as well..

get over it!

“Selling out” refers to the compromising of one’s integrity, morality and principles in exchange for money, ’success’ (however defined) or other personal gain.

They left Sony who was a boss, now are with Target who are a partner, they have complete control of everything within the Pearl Jam Corporation not anyone else, they still thinking about us as fans..

Peace :)

TC | 6/2/2009, 1:32 pm EST

As a member of the Ten Club I have to say I’m a little disappointed in the target deal.

To Fail,

I do understand what you are saying. Because of their stance on the industry I have supported them though concert posters and bootlegs from the site. I think this decision goes against what the real fans expect from them.

Mrmojorisinca | 6/2/2009, 1:32 pm EST

The sound was off (Not fault of PJ), but the song rocked :)

TheCoz | 6/2/2009, 1:33 pm EST

I personally loved the song but I have to agree that the audio was terrible. I was hoping they’d play at least two songs, considering there wasn’t a third guest on the show.

As for this “sell-out” bullshit…Pearl Jam have remained one of the most loyal bands to their fans, refused to make a video to promote “Vs.” (which sold almost 1 million copies its first week without media promotion), holds front section seating open for their fan club members AND was the only band with enough balls to take on TicketMaster.

Personally, I’m happy about this deal with Target for two reasons:

A. Those scumbags at Wal-Mart won’t profit off of one of my favorite bands.

B. Pearl Jam is keeping the tradition of physical albums alive, giving music meaning to its owners unlike the “chew and spit out” culture of iTunes etc.

Fail | 6/2/2009, 1:45 pm EST

Mrmojorisinca says “They left Sony who was a boss, now are with Target who are a partner” Thanks, I needed a good laugh.

TheCoz | 6/2/2009, 1:51 pm EST

@ Fail

Please explain to me where Pearl Jam used to sell their albums before this Target deal. At least they are able to choose who they boycott (cough, cough, Wal-Mart) instead of Sony making distribrution decisions for them. Let me be the first to apologize on Pearl Jam’s behalf for them making music that more than 500 people can appreciate. Most bands can’t even fathom the idea of “selling-out” because only their friends and family will make some pity purchases. Complete strangers are a little more careful with their money.

mrmojorisinca | 6/2/2009, 1:52 pm EST

Im glad I could make you laugh..
its only fair since you’ve had me laughing since this morning :)

Lukin | 6/2/2009, 1:52 pm EST

“Fail” you are missing the whole point of this target/selling out thing. It is true that Pearl Jam is turing around and doing exactly what a record company does. But isn’t that the point???? To do exactly what a record company does but not have to give them a huge cut and ownership of the music? They are doing it themselves.
They have to sell have to sell their music somewhere and it might as well be target and a bunch of indie stores. “Fail” if you can honestly tell all of us that you have never purchased music from a retail store in your whole life and helped your favorite bands “sell out” then I might listen to what you have to say. If not, then what you say is pointless. (don’t lie)
It’s funny that pearl jam is selling their music at one big store and a bunch of indie stores instead of all of the big stores and indie stores and it’s only now that fail thinks they have sold out. If that’s his/her argument then every single band in the world has sold out.

mrmojorisinca | 6/2/2009, 1:54 pm EST

lets all be honest..no one here is going to change anyone’s mind. the pro people car sit a spit out all pearl Jam has done, and the cons will point out the cracks..so to everyone Keep on Rockin in a free world :)

Rpaq | 6/2/2009, 1:54 pm EST

I got no problem with Pearl Jam being association to Target.

Does that make them sell out? Maybe, but I don’t think so.

In these times of economical crisis, the concept of ‘being sell-out’ needs to be redefined.

If Pearl Jam associate is name to an American company with goods ethics, who takes good care of is employees and are concerned about the environment, is this a bad thing?

If they help this company to make more money and secure American job, can we blame them for that?

mrmojorisinca | 6/2/2009, 1:57 pm EST

lets all be honest..no one here is going to change anyone’s mind. the pro people are going to sit a spit out all the good pearl Jam has done (me being one of them), and the cons will point out the cracks..so to everyone Keep on Rockin in a free world

Jungleland2 | 6/2/2009, 2:00 pm EST

“Their deal with Target isn’t exclusive. You’ll still be able to get the record at your local independent record store, I guarantee it.”

Read the post – the band will work with (1) Target (2) a digital company – maybe Itunes, maybe Amazon? (3) A network of indie stores

I have to say this is not a horrible plan. The Indies are the ones that get screwed on the big box deals. They end up buying a few copies retail and reselling them, but make no money on it.

So Best Buy and Wal Mart won’t have the record, but Target and Independent stores will.

pj romo | 6/2/2009, 2:04 pm EST

To all those who think pearl jam are sell outs and that think they’re trying to hard. You guys are watching too much high school musical and reading too teen bop. You guys aren’ t real fans, you guys are bandwagen kids. Grow up. To all the real pj fans keep on rockin’ fellas!

pj romo | 6/2/2009, 2:06 pm EST

Brad | 6/2/2009, 2:08 pm EST

I agree with mrmojorisinca…I read several comments before realizing, “What the fuck am I doing?” Every one of these message boards turns out the same, and we always get pulled into feeling like we have to defend a point of view about something absolutely trivial. I am a huge PJ fan, but in the end, I should spend my energy on something more important than a fucking performance on a late-night show. Target: Big fucking deal. Is Pearl Jam supposed to sell their CDs from a fucking lemonade stand and do monkey dances at our request? Someone will always find something negative…not constructively critical…NEGATIVE. Absolutely useless waste of fucking oxygen.

Fail | 6/2/2009, 2:09 pm EST

Coz and Lukin,

I think I’ve already addressed this.

The difference is THIS TIME THEY MADE THE DECISION, not the record company, this is PJ’s choice. THEY SOLD OUT. They weren’t forced to do anything or sell anywhere by a record company, they just decided to do EXACTLY what a record label would do. So in essence, how is their integrity any better than that of a giant record label. For me, it’s not. Not anymore.

Based on what you said Lukin PJ should just sell tickets to all their shows through Ten Club at the same price that a Ticketmaster would sell them at. That way PJ would “not have to give them a huge cut”. Because this is what this deal is about – MONEY.

thatguy | 6/2/2009, 2:09 pm EST

the song was boring and trite. sounded liked amped up counting crows. weak and uninspired.

…and that’s the single!!

BAHAHAHA

Boo.

Rich CT | 6/2/2009, 2:10 pm EST

The song was garbage, they are fakes and they suck!! The avocado record flopped so now they have to sellout. You can’t knock Starbucks and whine about corporate America then go sign a deal with them. They did this for $$$, most people download their music anyway.

Lukin | 6/2/2009, 2:11 pm EST

It’s funny listening to people like “Fail” complain about Target so much. The only people I know that complain about companies that much are the people who work at those companies.

“Fail”, shouldn’t you go back to work and start putting up that PEARL JAM “Backspacer” Display?

TheCoz | 6/2/2009, 2:15 pm EST

@ Fail

Pearl Jam write and perform music to make MONEY?!?!?!?!? I always thought they were weekend warriors who flipped burgers Mon-Fri. It’s called a career, look into it.

chds | 6/2/2009, 2:18 pm EST

There is no such thing as a sell-out anymore…everything is commercialized to the point where “selling out” is just a musicians means of survival, or in Pearl jam’s case, changing with the times. By the way the song rocks…I like Eddie off the guitar being a frontman again.

A | 6/2/2009, 2:18 pm EST

Lots of controversy over this shit eh? i think what’ll be interesting is to see how many of the real pearl jam fans decide to speak up and show up to pj concerts w/ red target painted posters and tshirts. might throw off the vibe a bit there but not a bad protest. For those who want to actually make a difference in the target issue, that might be an immediate course of action.

Fail | 6/2/2009, 2:19 pm EST

Lukin, I couldn’t help but notice you didn’t have a counterargument. You can defend them all you want, but you know I have a point. This is about PJ, not Target.

pj romo | 6/2/2009, 2:23 pm EST

Lukin | 6/2/2009, 2:25 pm EST

Ok “Fail” Your argument doesn’t make any sense, but who cares. Lets just settle this right now so we can get back to listening to “Get Some”. Let’s hear you solution.
How should pearl jam go about releasing their music in a way that would not make them sellouts to you?

If you had a band and no record company and had to get your music to millions of fans how would you do it? How would you get it to people who don’t have internet access or very slow connections? How would you get it to people on a low income? How would you get it to people who don’t have access to independent record stores. How would you get it to people who want the Vinyl version of the album? I just want to hear how you would go about doing all of this? Let’s hear it.

STUPID PEARL JAM GARBAGE FACE!

Trapdoor | 6/2/2009, 2:28 pm EST

I am just curious, for those who are so against this whole Target thing. How do you expect them to sell their music? Do you really think you can depend on private and individual stores to sell hundreds of thousands of copies? Why is it such a crime that Pearl Jam actually gets more money for their own music, rather than most of it going to a record label? So what if they did something a record label would do, would you want a record label to get most of the money from YOUR music? Would you want to only see pennies on the dollar for every album sold because the record company makes the profit from your YOUR music and not you? If you answered yes, then I’m surprised your brain functions enough to even read this. Why does it matter to you?

B Gates | 6/2/2009, 2:30 pm EST

That money argument is so played. If you want an audience then people say it’s about money. Fuck that shit. The best bands admit they want a taste whilst staying relevant and trying to sell as much records as possible. U2, Pearl Jam, Coldplay, Killers. They wanna sell records.

Blow | 6/2/2009, 2:33 pm EST

PJ blows anyhow, who cares how they release their album. And I can tell you why Vedder’s vocals were low, it’s because he sucks. It doesn’t take a genius to know that when a “singer” can’t sing that well they lower the vocals and turn up the instruments.

pj romo | 6/2/2009, 2:34 pm EST

Exactly “Trapdoor”! Someone else with rational thoughts on this subject.

Fail | 6/2/2009, 2:37 pm EST

Lukin,

My agrument doesn’t make any sense? How so?

Before I answer your question, you may want to do your research. Avocado has sold under 800k to date. So maybe we can work this out with those numbers instead of the millions you quoted. Think maybe they could hatch a plan to move under a million units, or even just over, without a deal with the big boys? They have a very successful website that could easily handle both digital and shipped copies for those that require them. For Pete’s sake they could start taking advanced orders today. Maybe you should check it out sometime and buy a couple bootlegs. It’s called pearljam.com. That in addition to independent shops isn’t good enough?

A | 6/2/2009, 2:39 pm EST

The problem with “get some” is that to be honest, it sounds like it could be a chick punk song that eddie put lyrics over. It just doesnt sound like pearl jam to me. I wish some people in this blog would take a second to discuss the music. Isn’t that what this shit was for anyway?

Trapdoor | 6/2/2009, 2:39 pm EST

Why do you think ticket prices have tripled in 5 years (for all bands)? Because bands don’t see money from their record sales anymore. It all goes to record labels and iTunes. Just one example of many, I saw ac/dc 6 years ago for $23. How much is their summer tour now? nearly $100 for even worse seats. Let them decide, and let them keep the money.

Also, I love brendan, but it seemed like this tune lacked production (and i dont just mean the shitty sound quality). Does anyone agree? I feel like so much could have been done with this arrangement that just wasnt. It feels blocky to me. I don’t like the arrangment (if you could even call it that)

Agree with Trapdoor…

God forbid a band wants to get more return for the work they put in on it.

This independence was achieved through hard work, not selling out.

Lukin,

My argument doesn’t make sense? How so?

Before I answer your question I’d ask that you do a little research. Avocado has sold fewer than 800k copies to date. So let’s work out this problem using those numbers and not the millions that you quoted.

In case you didn’t know, PJ has a pretty successful website that could easily handle digital downloads as well as shipped copies for those that require them. You should actually check it out sometime, and while your there buy a couple bootlegs. They could even start taking advanced orders today in preparation. That and independent shops really should be enough.

no code | 6/2/2009, 3:05 pm EST

good grief theyerok thats what being a pj fans is about. go post your comments on you myspace.

Sweet And Low | 6/2/2009, 3:12 pm EST

And the Target ad doesn’t bug me. You think Eddie and crew don’t have their fans’ best interest at heart after 20 years? I think they know what they’re doing. it won’t be sold exclusively at Target, which is how much smaller than Sony, the giant they were tied to for 18 years?

Go ahead; I stopped caring what anyone thinks about this amazing band a long, long time ago. I love them and your opinion means nothing to me.

Can’t wait for the new record, which I will buy at Target the day it comes out.

Viva la Pearl Jam!

imo it kinda sounded like a lot of other things and didn’t highlight any special guitar work of vocal ability.

Trapdoor | 6/2/2009, 3:49 pm EST

TC -
Its about the music to ME, I wouldn’t care what politics or opinions they have. I just wanted to ask why is it a big deal to everyone else. Would you do your job for free? So why should they? Why should anyone blame a band for expecting to see money from record sales? Bands have sold millions of copies, and still wind up owing the record company money do to poor record contracts that favor the label. Is that what bands should strive for?

Mark | 6/2/2009, 3:52 pm EST

Seriouslu, why argue with these musically challenged PJ haters? I LOVE that fact that they don’t like them..it’s already ridiculously hard enough to get a ticket to their concerts, and that makes one less musically impaired person sitting to my left at a PJ concert wondering why 35,000 people are singing their lyrics at the top of their voices…please haters..continue hating!! OUR gain–your loss!!
I’ll even make a deal with you, I won’t show up at your Britney Spears concert if you don’t show up at Pearl Jam’s..ok? OKAY!!!

Lukin | 6/2/2009, 3:52 pm EST

FAIL=”The difference is THIS TIME THEY MADE THE DECISION, not the record company, this is PJ’s choice. THEY SOLD OUT. They weren’t forced to do anything or sell anywhere by a record company, they just decided to do EXACTLY what a record label would do. So in essence, how is their integrity any better than that of a giant record label”

Here’s why your argument doesn’t make any sense. You are arguing that Pearl Jam made the decision to sell their music somewhere other than their website and that is the definition of selling out. ???? Did you think they sold out with their last album? They sold it the exact same way. The only difference was that they sold it at every big box store. Now they are only going to sell it at one big box store and a indie record stores. How else are they supposed to get their music in the hands of fans? They have to sell it. Right? In stores like target even.
Yes they are better that the record companies. Record companies own the music that bands create and make a profit off of that bands art. Record companies do not create the music. Is pearl jam making money off of someone else’s art? No! They are selling their own product that they’ve worked almost 20 years to own outright. You say “how is their integrity any better that that of a giant record label”. I say you need to look up the word integrity. They have nothing but integrity.

Just because they only sold 800,000(which is a huge amount) copies of “pearl jam” doesn’t mean they only have 800,000 fans. Maybe 500,000 thousand fans didn’t like the album so they didn’t buy it. Maybe another 700,000 didn’t have the funds to purchase it so they stole it or a someone gave them a copy. Then there are fans like me that bought it 3 times. I bought the fan club edition, the retail edition while I was waiting for my fan club edition to arrive in the mail, and the vinyl edition.

FAIL=”In case you didn’t know, PJ has a pretty successful website that could easily handle digital downloads as well as shipped copies for those that require them. You should actually check it out sometime, and while your there buy a couple bootlegs.”

Yeah, I know about the bootlegs. I own about 30 of them. I bought most them at retail stores. Like I said, not everybody has a internet connection or if they do it might be very slow. I have only one record store in my town and it’s a pretty good sized town. I’m sure there are many states out there that don’t have record stores in every town. But I’m sure they have a target near by. If you made a product you’d be out of business in a day.

Mark | 6/2/2009, 3:55 pm EST

Hey all you self-righteous, self-important people out there…before you start taking hits at pearl jam for making a fair deal with target that includes indie record stores and environmental cause be sure you’re holding yourself up to the same standards…I take it all of you buy only locally grown organic food, walk or ride bikes to work/school, don’t own a pair of sneakers made by some child in a third world country that gets paid about 1 cent a day…you are all vegans and have never eaten at a fast food chain….think before you speak….if you believed in the music then you would want to share it….not everyone has access to a computer, nor a credit card to shop online all the time…and if you still have a problem with it, don’t come to any more shows…gives real fans a better chance at seats you may be taking up

Fail | 6/2/2009, 4:12 pm EST

Lukin,

You keep talking in circles.

First you say they can’t distribute on their own because of volume, then you make excuses based on the actual number of album sales.
Then you say that some folks have slow internet, but I’m pretty sure everyone has access to US Mail.

I have a hard time believing that you know anything about PJ and what they have stood for in the past. I wrote “how is their integrity any better that that of a giant record label”. I noticed you didn’t answer that at all but to write “they have nothing but integrity” . Not really an answer at all.

They could get this gone if they wanted to. Plain and simple, this is about money. Maybe I should show my support for the new Pearl Jam Corporation by illegally downloading the new album.

FAIL is a loser | 6/2/2009, 4:13 pm EST

Did you really just spend your entire day posting on here about how Pearl Jam is “selling out”? You don’t have something better to do with your time? Like a job?

So they made a deal with Target. WHO CARES?? You can still get the CD online or at a local store. Why do you care so much?

Rich | 6/2/2009, 4:15 pm EST

Sweet and Low sorry sweetie but you are not very bright. The best interest of their fans?!! They are SELLING OUT to try and get more fans! The last record they made was boring and failed at a time when other artists put out good stuff. They are only in this for money and fame. Get a life stop idolizing these middle aged losers.

divinations | 6/2/2009, 4:25 pm EST

i live in nyc and in the last year alone i’ve seen two prominent virgin megastores close (one in time square!) and two tower records. in other words, there’s a diminishing platform for bands to sell music, other than digital. PJ seems to be partnering w/ Target for mainstream access for people = fine. and they are still selling thru independent stores = cool too. as for their music, like it or leave, but have some respect for their longevity and dignity–some of you will when you get a bit older and bands like tv on the radio are still recording and the 24 yr old next to you is calling them old news. PJ are a class rock act that does nothing more than create music.

Sweet And Low | 6/2/2009, 4:25 pm EST

Rich,

Are you that clueless? Pearl Jam’s last album is estimated to have sold around 700,000-750,000 copies DESPITE being on an off-shoot music label (Clive Davis’ J) and no huge marketing campaign. The band recognizes that a big portion of its fan base doesn’t like mp3 quality sound, etc, etc, and is committed to printing on cd AND mp3, and even vinyl whenever necessary.

Faithful | 6/2/2009, 4:28 pm EST

Rich, you’re an ass clown.

Killing new song, love the drum intro!!!!

I’ve been in the tenclub since ‘96 and am obviously a huge fan. That being said, I was a bit dissapointed in the performance, but am willing to chalk it up to shitty TV sound… I think the could sound great on the album.

ari | 6/2/2009, 4:32 pm EST

plain and simple…their new song sucks.

Sweet And Low | 6/2/2009, 4:37 pm EST

Interesting. Rolling Stone still hasn’t posted my comment declaring that Pearl Jam blatantly ripped off a Devo song for Got Some. They saving that analysis for themselves? I wonder.

Lukin | 6/2/2009, 4:39 pm EST

I didn’t say they couldn’t distribute it because of volume. I said the volume of fans makes it impossible to distribute it only through their website and a few indie stores(which is your suggestion). I’d like you to tell me how someone without internet access can oder the album online?

Do I have a hard time knowing with PJ stood for in the past? I don’t think so. I grew up in north Seattle and was there when Pearl Jam got big. I know pretty well what they stand for as a fan. I know about the free concerts they played. I know the shows that I missed because they stood up to ticket master. I know what they stood for when I never got to see their video for their first single off of VS. I now what they stood for when they released Vitalogy on vinly before CD or cassette. I know what they stood for when they released “who you are” off of No Code instead of a Main stream single. I know what they stand for when I get floor seats through the Ten Club. I know about the hard work they put into their music and now have the opportunity to do what they want. I know that they care about their fans. They might not care about you, but they care about their fans.

Do you need me to tell you what Integrity is? Go get dictionary. I’m still waiting on your better plan to release their album. Because the only thing that you changed from their plan is to take Target out of the deal.

Anonymous | 6/2/2009, 4:40 pm EST

Fail, what are you talking about? I’m not understanding your point. They were on a record label with Sony for 18 years. And now they are going independent but have made an agreement with Target to sell the album on their shelves. What’s the big idea? How could they be antiestablishment if they were on a record label forever? You are confusing me.

But the song was alright. Eddie is sounding a little rusty. He tried to hit some high notes to no avail. I hope they mix this well.

Leece | 6/2/2009, 4:44 pm EST

Seriously ppl, get over it, so they made a deal with Target? Who the eff cares! Pearl Jam (along with Nirvana)are responsible for an entire culteral revolution. They are to the 90’s what the Beetles were to the 60’s. They are an amazingly talented band, that has held it together for almost 20 years, solely becuase they believe in the music they write, and the causes they support. They’re not about the money or the fame, although i’m sure they appreciate it more than others. If you don’t like them, then who cares what you think, and if your a true Pearl Jam fan, you understand that they wouldn’t do anything unless they thought it was good for everyone involved.

Anonymous | 6/2/2009, 4:50 pm EST

Oh and if they didn’t make a deal with some “big box” corporation, how the hell would I get my hands on the album? I’m not an internet shopper and there really are no local independent music stores around this area. Target is the only place I could buy it from. If you listen to Pearl Jam, I suggest you stop. Music doesn’t seem to matter to fans anymore. They just want their favorite artists to go the Radiohead route.

faithhappy | 6/2/2009, 4:59 pm EST

badass!!

Disapointed | 6/2/2009, 5:04 pm EST

I’m going to back up Fail here. As a long time PJ fan, I feel a bit disheartened by the deal PJ worked out with Target. Yes, in order to get the music out there to more people, they’ll need to distribute it to the big chains. But do you really need to film a commercial for said chains? I don’t think Radiohead did commercials with every single chain that carried In Rainbows. In my opinion the avenue they chose to distribute was much more creative. It also proved that a band with their stature can easily get their music out there without making a very public announcement about corporate deal, such as the one we heard about with Target and PJ.

Another thing I find odd is that PJ gets about 300 random people in Seattle to take part in the commercial. Why not get 300 loyal ten club members, who have been waiting anxiously for PJ to play a proper Seattle show since 2003, to come and watch the performance for the recording instead. And you can’t count the Gorge shows as Seattle shows cause that’s more than 2.5 hours from Seattle by car. In addition, I find it odd how Eddie hasn’t officially included Seattle on his solo tours either. My bass player’s sister was one of the 300 participants at the event and she doesnt own one PJ album. Does it sound like they truly have their fans in mind when it comes to their music with stunts like that?

It keeps on coming up that it should be about the music. That’s a fair point. I’ll address that by saying I wasn’t too impressed with the song they played last night. Trust me, I want to love it! However, apart from some of the cool fills Cameron has, nothing really grabs me in the song. I feel like the last PJ song that caught my fancy was Sad, off the Lost Dog b-side album.

To all the PJ loyalists who might get upset at what I wrote, know this: Not too long ago I used to be one of the guys attacking the haters. Really its about what you dig and can tap your toes to. The past five or so years I’ve discovered bands like the Black Keys, Wilco, My Morning Jacket, Andrew Bird, Gomez, and countless others who get my music-loving ears exciting like PJ did until recently.

For all those that end up buying the album, I hope you enjoy it. Anyway, I’ll leave it at that.

Anonymous | 6/2/2009, 5:04 pm EST

“Fail” has no good answer to anything. If he doesn’t like the music, that’s fine. But to question Pearl Jam’s integrity as a band is ridiculous.

Javier | 6/2/2009, 5:23 pm EST

I honestly dont care about the target thing. yeah its a busines, you make money. Please people! Thats how you do it, you sell something that is worth buying and has a cost and we (the fans) buy it. So what?
i do think however that someone made a good point saying that it woulndt have bothered them if pearl jam wouldnt of made such a big deal of it in the past… You know.. When they were communists…

Lukin | 6/2/2009, 5:31 pm EST

Here’s why they didn’t use Ten Club members.

Pearl Jam’s Manager Kelly Curtis

“There’s a lot of unemployed actors in Seattle,” says Curtis, “and we wanted to go through all the proper unions and make sure everyone got paid” — and that all those in attendance signed non-disclosure agreements

So instead of getting free extras(which would have been easy) they went and actually paid out of work actors. Hey “Fail”, That’s what you call integrity.

ed ked | 6/2/2009, 5:37 pm EST

Their music? It’s regressive yahoo butt-rock with vocals that might just as well be Michael Bolton or “Beef” from Phantom of the Paradise as far as I’m concerned.
I’ve loathed it viscerally since the first song of theirs I ever heard. The shitty influenced-by-PJ bands are really just icing on the cake. PJ followers are orders of magnitude shittier, which must reflect on the source in some way.

ed ked | 6/2/2009, 6:00 pm EST

To some of you on here.
So, basically, expressing an opinion about the subject at hand in a comment thread where people are meant to be discussing said topic is being an asshole? The old “haha you spend too much energy on this you must have no life lol” argument. Bullshit through and through. So why even be here talking about anything at all, ever? Why aren’t you out having a life and getting laid instead of bitching about people bitching about stuff you claim not to care about?

Great vocal delivery by Eddie once again.. what amazing talent… pearl jam sounds great… like always.

I hate Pearl Jam’s music. It’s about 17 years later, and that song “Jeremy” still loops through my brain. “Jeremy spoke in – spoke in – Jeremy spoke in – spoke in…” then like a monkey he starts going, “Hoo Hoo Hoo Hoo HOO hoo HOO!” Fuck you, Eddie Vedder, if that is your real name.

It’s not Nightswimmer. Show some respect to an album you gave five stars back in 1992.

PT | 6/2/2009, 6:58 pm EST

I love how people call Pearl Jam a sellout now when they were with Sony (a much larger corporation) for years …. Pearl Jam wants to reach a large audience because guess what people? They are a BIG band!!! They have a loyal fan base that travels to see them all over the world time and time again… I mean people who bash bands like Pearl Jam are these types of people-

1 Emo band mtv loving teenagers who wouldnt know what good ROCK music was if it smacked them in
the face

2 TRUE corporate rock lovers of bands like CREED, Nickleback, 3 Doors Down…

3 People who have no idea who Pearl Jam is and what they stand for and how many charitable causes they have donated to over the years and how hard they work to be socially aware and to make music that actually has a purpose, not just a song to hit the top 10 but songs that MEAN something…

Also Pearl Jam were thrust into the spotlight with Ten , they did not ask to be the poster boys of grunge and sell a million records but it happened because people connected to Eddie’s lyrics and the bands music and wanted to be a part of it… I mean they pulled back by not doing mtv videos for a LONG time and not doing interviews and didn’t tour as much sometimes just to stay sane and NOT “sellout” so come on people, to bash a band you must fist know the TRUTH about the band you are bashing so if you babies are all done now can we please get to the bands we really need to bash like CREED 3 Doors Down, and Nickleback ???????? Thanks

11 posts that took me a combined 20 minutes to write, posted throughout the day. Yeah I have no life, no job, no responsibility. At least I have a point which is more than I can say for most of you lemming apologists. So go ahead and hate cause that’s all you’ve got.

Believe me I understand. Television ads are expensive and PJ needs to meet their profit margin, so why not let Target flip the bill. After all it is the music “business”. I mean a band like PJ needs TV promotion, Coldplay has TV promotion, U2 has TV promotion. I’m sure Target will throw some money at the enviroment to help PJ save face- hooray.

As for me I say good luck to the Pearl Jam Corporation and wish them all the luck in the world. I’m sure soon enough they will be wishing for those Bush tax cuts for the rich.

OK, say goodbye to the bad man.

Ian | 6/2/2009, 7:02 pm EST

As for the music……really liked it on first few listens. Sound quality not great on recording, but bound to be better on the actual album. I actually can’t wait, I think I am possibly looking forward to this release more than there past few records.

As for the ‘debate’ (such as it is), given that PJ were signed to Sony for such a long time, I don’t really think they can be attacked as hypocrites for doing a deal with Target. I see no inconsistency there. Technically speaking, they sold out the day they signed with Epic (as did Nirvana when they signed with Geffen, Alice in Chains with Sony, Soundgarden with A&M…I could go on – I love those bands by the way, but they are still technically sell outs).

disillusionedpjfan | 6/2/2009, 7:16 pm EST

Whether Fail’s opinion is right or wrong in regard’s to Pearl Jam’s business decisions (I will keep my opinion on that matter to myself), I do think Fail has fully beaten the proverbial ‘Dead Horse’.

Brad | 6/2/2009, 7:38 pm EST

Jeez, we should ALL punch ourselves in the face for even giving a shit about any of this. It’s a band, it’s a song, it’s not a big fucking deal. I’m a fan, but for the music, so I respect the people who are concentrating on the music, and I even respect the people who hated the performance. In fact, I’m glad to see very little ‘why didn’t you like the song? Boo hoo!” It didn’t blow me away, but it wasn’t bad either. I’ll buy the album, probably from an indie store, and life will go on. I’ll have friends who’ll say “Pearl Jam are still together” or “I haven’t listened to them since Vitalogy” and I’ll be cool with that. I’ll even have friends who are all about the inevitable new Creed coming out and, fuck it, good for them. Life is short; fuck this trivial bullshit.

Kims Deeler | 6/2/2009, 7:51 pm EST

Pearl Jam have earned the right to do whatever they want. I damn well will compare them to Led Zeppelin. They sure as hell haven’t become as pathetic as the Stones.

Rich | 6/2/2009, 8:02 pm EST

We have no idea who Pearl Jam is and what they stand for?!! Eddie Chedder has bitched and moaned about corporate America and put down companies that offer real pay-not $7 an hour, and benefits like Starbucks. Now that their last record tanked and they’re desperate for new fans they join with Wal Marts better cousin and make a tacky commercial. So they donate to charity. They are filthy rich they should donate!! You are confusing their little sales pitch with reality. PJ will do anything to sell their lame music because they SUCK.

Mahrker | 6/2/2009, 8:11 pm EST

I agree this song was flat out boring. It doesn’t really sound any different from the past few albums since Yield. It could’ve been an outtake from the record for chrissake. And McCready’s solo goes nowhere. A sign of Brendan O’Brien cutting down his solos again. From VS. to Yield, Mike was the invisible man with almost no long solos. Coincidence? I THINK NOT

Landrew | 6/2/2009, 8:47 pm EST

I think any band which has been around so long has a hard time remaining relevant. Whether you love or hate P. Jam. Pick any favorite band of yours. They will all fall into a corporate rut, and produce some so/so albums over time. It must be nearly impossible for most to create a truly new sound all over again. That is the nature of the music business. Look how many great bands sounded best on their first albums, when their sound was new and fresh? How do you move beyond that threshold creatively? Don’t just speak out against P. Jam. Look at the whole range of artists who have taken this route over the last 30-40 years. MTV ruined some of the best 70’s bands ever in the 80’s. Thank god that is over.

R.E.M. named their turtle “Nightswimmer” in honor of their song “Nightswimming”. Now apologize to Rolling Stone!! Haha

“FAIL” No life, no job, no responsibility. You summed yourself up pretty well I think. Your name says it all “Fail”. I would just like to ad that you have no point. I hope you had fun today using your big corporation owned internet access, on your big corporation computer, posting nonsense on a big corporation’s magazine website, wearing your big corporation clothes, that you bought from a big corporation’s store. I thought you sounded like a bush tax cut guy.

Science Fiction | 6/2/2009, 10:16 pm EST

For all the lessons Vedder should have been learning at Neil Young’s feet, they evidently didn’t sink in too well. Wonder what the guy who sang “This Note’s For You’ thinks of the Target shenanigans.

Amazing how people think that dressing the part actually means something. Vedder gives himself a Mohawk, or grows a beard, or wears an Army field jacket, and people think he’s a champion of the proletariat. C’mon, folks, he got into music for the easy life.

yellow ledbetter | 6/2/2009, 10:19 pm EST

its obvious from the posts who are the real pearl jam fans vs the wannabe kids who were in 3rd grade when 10 was released. the new song “Got Some” was rocking. Their last album probably had some of the most artisistic lyrics since Binaural. Im not a big fan of using Target to market thier new album but whats the difference of using Sony records to being a label. you may not be a fan but the band has not tarnished over the years

Chi Town | 6/2/2009, 10:33 pm EST

Pearl Jam has still been selling out stadiums continuously since their inception. This may be a band that has fallen off the hipster radar, but they are far from being a forgotten about bargain bin band. That is exactly why this hurts. They don’t need the over exposure. They have a massive, dedicated fan base that would have stood by them through just about anything. Problem is, I think they are starting to realize that and have finally decided to cash in. The $75.00 Chicago shows are ludicrous but people are still going. The only other sin they could have committed in my mind was exactly this. It really is confounding. It’s not like they don’t make a ton off touring. This was a chance to prove their indie/punk ethos and they blew it. It’s naive to think the companies the band complains about are any less of a problem than Target. If they are on tv promoting this album is “exlusively at Target” and they’re your altruistic hero type, you might just go to Target instead of taking the time to try the local store. Target 1, local store 0. Maybe Target can also sell replicas of the band’s neo-grunge outfits in their clothing section as a cross promotion. Any respect due them has no doubt diminished in the wake of the news that they are now charging a week’s worth of groceries for a ticket to see them. Fuck these guys.

knik | 6/2/2009, 10:43 pm EST

@ FAIL: Ok, you’ve made your point. You believe they are sell-outs and hypocrites. So move on. Why keep on harping on the same shit? There are those who love the band, so let them. Go find yourself some bands who haven’t sold out yet and see if they last 20 years.

jimmy | 6/2/2009, 11:15 pm EST

You know what the biggest difference between Pearl Jam and Bad Company is? Sincerity. I don’t find Eddie Vedder too credible when he’s singing about being an abused daughter, but I certainly believe Paul Rodgers when he talking about how much he loves women. They’re still re-heated classic rock. For proof look no further than how (and why) Green River broke up. They’re the impetus for major labels re-branding corporate rock as “alternative”.

bortvwoy | 6/2/2009, 11:25 pm EST

so so song from a great (and still relevant) band. fans are smiling cuz mike’s still got the rock star moves. non fans probably won’t be swayed (target deal notwithstanding). and the PJ bashers will continue to be Candlebox lovers.

Fail,

What a very sad life you must live. Pearl Jam gives hope and joy to all that share in listening to their music, irrespective of how it was recorded, what your interpretation of the lyrics are, wher or how it is sold. But keep on trashing them, please, because if more people listen to you, then the real fans will get tickets closer to the front.

Good luck to you.

As for Pearl Jam, I’m pretty certain that an Australian tour will be announced very soon. This, with the release of the new CD will make for some very cool times!

TC | 6/3/2009, 8:32 am EST

Lukin,

You are a complete joke. You posted on this site today about as much as “Fail” did. Then you called him out for having no life. You are actually a bigger loser than he is.

Honeypie | 6/3/2009, 9:08 am EST

Wow this looks just like the TenClub forums :)

I’m not sure if anyone has noticed but there are a bunch of people who have posted here at RS that agree with Fail on this topic, though obviously not as persistent. Which is why I guess Fail is getting the most flack. :(

As far as I’m concerned, I come down on the side of disappointed. I do think that this move is a bit contradictory to the position PJ has taken in the past. I know several people have said it’s about the music, but anyone who has followed PJ knows that PJ has often used their fame and stature to take a stance on issues that have nothing to do with the music.

That being said, I can’t wait to hear the rest of the new album.

a-just one day | 6/3/2009, 9:17 am EST

good sound, nice vibe… all you can ask for really…

Fail-the name suits you | 6/3/2009, 11:47 am EST

Hey Fail-
You’re so cool. No really, you’re way too cool for the rest of us idiot assholes. I’m guessing you only listen to bands that sell records at the 15 indie record stores left in the country? And you never shop anywhere but mom and pop stores? And you drive a vehicle that runs on vegetable oil?

Check yourself, asshole. You made the point yourself-Pearl Jam leaves corporate giant Sony only to make the same deal a big record company would make with a retailer.

Exactly! They eliminated the middle man, effectively acting as the record company themselves. They have maintained control and have just enlisted many sources(Target being one of them-the biggest one)to distribute. The Stones did the same thing when they started Rolling Stones Records back in the 70’s, so that they didn’t have to creatively answer to a record company.

You’ve tried to make some good points, but you’ve “Fail”ed. And no, the rest of us aren’t stupid, we just disagree. Are you so insecure that you have to call people stupid when they disagree with you?

Who do you listen to Fail? C’mon, put your money where your mouth is and stop taking the easy way out on this issue. It’s easy to sit on your cozy little perch at home and snipe at PJ, but tell us who you like. I would be willing to bet-oh no!-that they sell records through a record company or retailer.

Lastly, I like a ton of different bands, but PJ are more generous with their fan base than any other I’m aware of. After 18 years of being a fan, I’m willing to give them the benefit of the doubt.

JoeD | 6/3/2009, 12:36 pm EST

Looks like someone really hit a sore spot with the PJ fans. This dude Fail hasn’t posted in 17 hours but he’s still getting beat on. What’s even more funny is that a lot of people who posted seem to agree with him (including me).

Jon G. | 6/3/2009, 1:05 pm EST

Notice RS called “Got Some” a “track.” I approve, because these guys don’t write SONGS, they write grooves and jams. Good players, Ed has an interesting and powerful voice… and they are not songwriters.

PJFANATIC | 6/3/2009, 1:09 pm EST

I think that the folks beating down on “Fail” should take a look at the forums at pearljam.com. Read through the thread “Is this getting out of hand now?”. The 10C members are ripping PJ to shreads for this decision, and these people are their most loyal fans. Looks to me like “Fail” isn’t failing that much after all.

Hammersmith77 | 6/3/2009, 1:20 pm EST

The song is called Nightswimming, the turtle was named Nightswimmer. Read the article first, dumbass. Pearl Jam is one of the best bands of all time.

Morons | 6/3/2009, 1:21 pm EST

Anybody calling PJ sellouts are retarded. Who cares if they went with a big label unless PJ claimed they never would or took a stand against big labels. Unless that happened, they’d be idiotic for not getting as rich as they can. Being a musician is a business like anything else.
That said, I dislike PJ’s music to an extreme. Nirvana, Soundgarden, and Alice In Chains are much better grunge bands. Eddie Vedder’s voice grates on my ears. But that doesn’t mean if the rest of you numbnuts like them PJ shouldn’t get rich from their music.

Can't Stand | 6/3/2009, 1:23 pm EST

I can’t stand PJ’s music period. As to whether they sold out or not, we all have a price. It just takes more for some than others. And if any of say you don’t, you’re lying.

Swingline | 6/3/2009, 1:36 pm EST

If I checked and judged the “ethical inventory” of every artist and album in my collection, I’d probably be left with little to nothing.

All of this should be music that just gets you through the day. You choose to pay money for their art and if you don’t, you’ll most likely move the fuck on to what you do like…

Be secure in your opinion, which usually does NOT include beating down every instant you’re not agreed with…

CK | 6/3/2009, 2:07 pm EST

What happened to this band? I use to love these guys but it looks like they just got swallowed by the corporate machine. If anyone needs an example, check out what they did to a long-time fan blog ‘I am Fuel You are Friends’.

Makes me now want to be a fan anymore.

all the people on here bashing PJ are probably the same tools listening to Nickelback and going to see the Creed reunion. PJ’s last album was awesome and this one will be also. So they have no record label and people call them sell outs ok…whatever. This band can do what they want and will still be better then all the crap out there today.

whatever already | 6/3/2009, 3:01 pm EST

CK- you need to realize there are people out there, because of the internet, that feel they deserve attention. Pearl Jam was successful before the internet became a free for all. This “blogger” does actually have a shitty blog, and she violated the law. Now I’m a huge Pearl Jam fan, I know that everything they do will be a work of art. But if everyone thinks that selling out today is forming an alliance with Target, a respectable retail service, well theyre wrong. Pearl Jam sold out back in 1992 when they signed with SONY. Take off your tin foil helmets everyone, enjoy the music, life’s short!

Fail-the name suits you | 6/3/2009, 3:24 pm EST

Hey “disapointed”, I appreciate your well-thought out take, even if you can’t spell. The fact is, if a band is popular in its time, it means they have “sold out” in some way, shape or form usually. My issue is how naive everyone is about it. Name a popular band, and I’ll give you an example of how they’ve sold out, at least by the way it is being defined in these postings.

BTW, I love Radiohead, fucking love ‘em. However, Radiohead are an estabished band THAT COULD AFFORD TO TAKE A MARKETING RISK BECAUSE THEY ARE ALREADY OBSCENELY RICH-hardly something that should make them heroes. That said, I thought it was a smart thing they did.

It’s about the music when it comes down to it. It’s there to be judged, and we are all entitled. But you hear this sell-out thing ALL THE FUCKING TIME-Green Day signed to a major label, their fans in the bay area called them sell-outs. Same w/Metallica. For all you Led Zep fans, they were the ultimate schills. They were famous for getting more money for themselves percentage-wise than any band before or since. And you know what-they are absolutely entitled to it. I’d rather give the artists my money then some record company exec sitting on his/her fat ass, never listening to or appreciating the music they are getting obscenely rich promoting. Pricing on PJ’s music/concert tix is usually less than the average artist, and they offer alot more than most to their fans.

And frankly, if the fans on their message boards heard the name Target and immediately lit PJ up for it, then fuck ‘em. Educate yourself before you react.

TC | 6/3/2009, 3:43 pm EST

Fail-the name suits you, Not only can you not come up with an original thought, you can’t even come up with an original name to post with. But I do give you credit for responding to a post that’s 23 hours old. Way to stay current.

PJFANATIC | 6/3/2009, 3:45 pm EST

from 10/24/00:

Ed mentions that before the show, there were two huge car company signs at the front of the stage which the venue didn’t want to remove. “We definitely didn’t want be a two hour commercial for Dodge…and they weren’t going to take it down. Actually, we could be a commercial for Dodge,” and proceeds to sing a little bit: “Can’t find a better van … or we could do one for Ford,” and then rips away at his guitar. Ed also says he was glad to play the Greek when it was still the Greek, and wasn’t the “Cisco Theater, or the Firestone Theater…”

And as recently as ‘03 (maybe more recently), the band insisted that all corporate signage inside of venues be covered up, as seen on their rider which is floating around the innerwebs somewhere. There are TONS of examples of this sentiment from the band.

the problem isnt promoting their album or their band or their music…the problem is that they are promoting a company at the same time, which has nothing to do with music.

Target is PROMOTING Pearl Jam, who by striking this deal, are in turn ENDORSING Target as a company.

They’re not telling YOU where and how to shop or what Target’s weekly specials are. And if you are on the computer reading this right now, don’t want to go to Target to pick up the album, and DON’T know any other means by which to get it, you need to tighten the chin-strap on the helmet, hold out the widest net you can find and hope a clue falls in their one day.

As a parent who’s buying diapers and baby food bi-weekly, I’ve come to appreciate the financial break Target can give when those things add up. I know I could get them a bit cheaper at Wal-Mart, but I don’t like the way they treat their employees, so I give Target my money instead.

And in doing so, I know I’ve lost all my cred in the indie diaper community, but I’ve accepted and moved on…

AGJ | 6/3/2009, 4:26 pm EST

Love PJ! From Ten to the Self Titled, i am hooked. With the amount of music they have put out on studio albums and other sources, it is utterly amazing that they can still jam new material. Some of us still love the hard rock sound – besides, Chris Cornell has shown us what can happen when artists go to far in the ‘experimental’ direction. For that matter, so has Tom Morello, The Pumpkins, etc… keep it simple. Garage Rock!!!

Five Digit Fan Club Number | 6/3/2009, 4:30 pm EST

Pearl Jam made me mad with the dozens of e-mails I received about the TEN reissue. They weren’t offering me a discount for being a member, just the opportunity to pay for it before everyone else did. When I sent an e-mail complaining, I got a very snotty response.

What about the kid who lost his 10c membership because he was the ONLY person they could prove distributed Riot Act (when he was just a stupid kid who used his real email address)?

The worst thing about them is their image. The image is not the truth. And that is why fans get so violent when you dare to question them. It turns into this heavy-handed underground thuggery. Signed, Five Digit Fan Club Number That I Use To Take My Friends To Shows, SO Fuck Off

coyote | 6/3/2009, 4:52 pm EST

This band is disgusting. It is hypocritical in the extreme for PJ to act like this. They criticize people who worked with the internet and made money from dot coms, when they made a ton of money from fans and now Target. Paul Allen gave away more money than they could ever dream of doing and yet they write a song to make fun of him. He’s not a bad guy. He’s just a socially inept geek. But yet, Eddie is buddies with Rob Glaser from Real Networks and plays at his wedding. Rob Glaser = okay for whatever reason. Rob is okay, in Eddie’s egomaniac mind, because of his philanthropy. Even though he is rich, and as we all know from following Pearl Jam doctrine, rich people are BAD! Unless you’re a rich person who can afford to follow the Ramones all over the world with your super-8 camera. Then it is A-OK!!! Pearl Jam fans are equally hypocritical. If you have something and they don’t, they will do everything they can to take you down. And if you dare to say anything about the band, they act as though you are personally attacking them. You can’t ever say that you don’t like a song or don’t connect with what they’re doing, or you will be treated like a leper, like you have committed treason.

KBilly | 6/3/2009, 4:59 pm EST

If Pearl Jam is releasing the cd themselves with no record label, does it not make sense to strike a deal with Target and make quite a bit of money to cover what I’m sure is a large expense on their part. Honestly, people are funny. You’re all wrapped up in things that don’t matter at all. I listen to Pearl Jam for one and only one reason, I like the MUSIC. What a strange concept.

Egotastical | 6/3/2009, 5:06 pm EST

Hey a famous band just released a brand new song, lets talk about the song, was it good, was it bad? No wait, lets just bitch about the retail partnerships they’re making to sell the CD. YEAH!

Casual listener | 6/3/2009, 5:19 pm EST

Looooooong time listener of Pearl Jam. I like A LOT of their music. With regards to the Target deal issue, I think that all bands are ultimately going to do what is best for themselves. I also think that fans should follow suit and do what is best for themselves. If fans don’t think that buying the next PJ album is in their best interest then they shouldn’t buy it. I personally can’t wait until it comes out and I really hope they don’t disappoint. I think they should stick with pop rock because that is where they excel.

y go home? | 6/3/2009, 6:05 pm EST

as a pj fan, i hope that all of the crap posted on here about how pj fans act is exagerrated. i have always been able to find a connection with pj’s music, but liking/not liking music is so subjective. any1 who loves music, should love the fact that there is no right and wrong when it comes to taste in art. as a pj fan, i know lots of ppl that dont like pj and somehow we have always gotten along… that said, pj rocks! always have…

I know a lot of PJ fans that when they first heard songs on No code thought it was the worst album ever. They gave it another listen / chance and now think it is a great album and love it to pieces. Also next time you walk out of a PJ concert and they have rocked the house down playing songs from the new album and the old classics. And you are on such a high because for those 2 hours they worked hard for there fans and the money you paid to see them.

Think about the things you are saying now

Just a thought

Fail is a Douche | 6/4/2009, 12:52 am EST

What’s funny about this Fail guy is that I’ve seen him posting on all the PJ articles. So this KID comes on here to slam PJ fans on all the PJ articles about how PJ sucks. Outstanding. What a douche.

I didn’t mind the song. It was catchy…I don’t know what people were expecting. It’s no huge single but comparable with the last album they put out. I was hoping that this album would be a little more folky like “santa cruz” (xmas single) or the into the wild soundtrack. and hey…it’s only one song so maybe it will be. They have to put out a rocker to prove they can still Jam. But some lighter folky stuff would be nice…that Santa Cruz is a wicked summer song.

Cheesecrop | 6/4/2009, 7:16 am EST

I’m split down the middle on this one. First off, I’m a fan from the beginning. Although I’m not a fan club member, I do own every one of their albums, and I will definitely pick this one up as well. I’m also not going to worry about where I buy it either.

Musically I thought it was pretty good. Vocals were something else. I assume part of this can be written off to the venue, but not all of it. The Avocado had some rough vocals as well, so I’m not sure what to ake out of this.

Finally – I love all the posts ripping into the band! Some of these posts are great. It’s not going to change my mind one way or the other. I’ll always like them, regardless of what others say. That being said, all the hyper-critical fans of the band have got to lighten up! Get a laugh out of it!

I will always love the negative comments among the mostly positive ones.

Mrmojorisinca | 6/4/2009, 8:36 am EST

I’m a huge PJ fan and probably always will be…
Now while I had the opportunity to write this after hearing more about the whole Target deal (something I wish more PJ fans would have done). I believe it’s was good decision for the band (not necessarily the best but a good one), they were still able to keep their integrity intact by working out a deal that will allow for other partners (including Indy shops) to still carry the album (this alone says a lot of the band and Target for that matter) not to mention whatever environmental and/or charitable cause is worked into the deal . Could they have gone the Radiohead route, yeah sure they could, but even Radiohead said they wouldn’t do it again so maybe it’s not perfect system either. Which brings me to the whole thing is an experiment and bands and fans have to come together to get this shit figured out. We shouldn’t just expect stuff for free because none of us work for free so why should any other band (including PJ).
Anyway that my say..
Keep on rocking in the free world 

JoeD | 6/4/2009, 9:09 am EST

To repeat my comment from yesterday – Looks like someone really hit a sore spot with the PJ fans.

The only thing I can say to all the people still choosing to beat on this “kid” Fail, you may want to add up the number of posters on this thread that share his opinion. The number is pretty high.

To PJFANATIC, I personally am amazed at the lashing they are taking ob the forums, though I have to imagine this is mostly a knee jerk reaction. A portion of the 10C forums have turned into a place to just over analyze everything PJ says and does.

Fail | 6/4/2009, 11:02 am EST

WOW

OK, this is the real Fail. The thread appointed enemy of PJ nation. I wanted to set a couple things straight.

1. In no post did I write that PJ sucks. I f’in love PJ, not just the music but what they have stood for in the past. What I hate is this decision to use Target (I think I’ve made that clear) and the way it contradicts the position they have taken in the past (see PJFANATIC | 6/3/2009, 3:45 pm EST and coyote | 6/3/2009, 4:52 pm EST)

2. People, please read more than just my posts. I am not alone in this opinion. If you haters actually took the time to read not only the other posters on this thread but the threads at 10C you would see that there are a ton of people that agree with me. If you do disagree with me that’s fine, I just think you are a little uninformed regarding the anti-corporate stance PJ has taken in the past. Replies stating I’m a loser with no life don’t really say anything constructive, though I love when losers attack losers

3. PJFANATIC wrote “the problem isn’t promoting their album or their band or their music…the problem is that they are promoting a company at the same time, which has nothing to do with music.” I think that just about says it all.

4. To “Fail is a Douche” who wrote “So this KID comes on here to slam PJ fans on all the PJ articles about how PJ sucks” That is just a lie, but whatever.

5. To all the “Fail is (whatever)” posters, I love the enthusiasm but where is the solid counterargument? The only real argument that any of you have made is that ultimately this is a way for them to make more money (I’m sure they need it). If that’s the case then fine, PJ should come out and say that. But they haven’t, and they won’t.

Well I guess that’s it.

Trapdoor | 6/4/2009, 11:27 am EST

First off, I am a huge PJ fan. I’ve seen countless posts on here claiming PJ fans defend PJ to the bitter end, and will never admit any wrong doing by the band. So let me say that even with all money I’ve spent going to shows and buying bootlegs (official and unofficial) that there are numerous PJ songs I cant stand. I’m sure even the guys in the band dont like every song, so what? And I do think they can be hypocrits. I thought it was weird the first time i saw their song on guitar hero, and now to find out they making their own Rock Band teamed up through Rhapsody. Bill Gates is evil because he’s rich, but Sean Penn is an American hero. The 10 reissue is a blatant attempt and easy money.
But in the end, WHO CARES? When i listen to a record I’m thinking “this song rocks!” and not “Bush is terrible and I’m so proud that PJ doesn’t make videos.”
If they want to be hyprocrits, then fine. As long as they keep putting out good music I’ll keep buying it. As long as they keep playing nearly 3 horus shows that tear the roof off I’ll keep going. And guess what else too, I voted for Bush….twice! and I’m still a fan.

Lukin wrote “Fail said that about himself. I just agreed with him.” Lukin, You may want to look up the word sarcasm in the dictionary, and make sure you read it slowly.

BTW, your total number of posts on this thread is at 9. You hardly seem to be a good candidate to call out someone for having no life or for being a loser.

TC | 6/4/2009, 11:39 am EST

FAIL FOR PRESIDENT OF 10C!!! :)

You would fit right in with the rest of the lunatics over there

Lukin | 6/4/2009, 2:20 pm EST

TC,

I find it flattering that you went through and read all of my post and added them up your your calculator again. That’s twice now. I also think you are a little weird for doing it. A bit scary even. Your like the official Rolling Stone, pearl jam comment thread stalker. How many comments have you made?

About calling FAIL out, I never did it. Fail did it himself. I just agreed. I’m not the one that wrote the words down. At least FAIL had an argument(as weak as it was). You’re just flailing all over the place trying to get something to stick.

yield to the target | 6/4/2009, 3:38 pm EST

eddie can be the new host for trl for all i care. fact is they make music that rocks. they kept the independent record labels in the deal AND did it without a record label. i think that speaks for itself. if any of you remember-radiohead released in rainbows w no label on a name your price basis. btw you can buy that record at starbucks.

megan | 6/4/2009, 4:49 pm EST

people are knocking this because like coyote said you cant be a self rightous hypocrite who slams other people then turn around and do the same thing. unless you want to become a joke. this was all about money money money by people who are already filthy rich. the mean fans who attack anyone who disagrees sound like a bunch of cult members with your unconditional sucking up to this stupid band.

admit it | 6/4/2009, 6:51 pm EST

that song was awful, that performance was awful and Target? really? I used to be die hard but still being a fan is hard to defend.

admit it | 6/4/2009, 6:54 pm EST

oh, and i agree with Fail 100%. People seem to be talking about him/her for some reason.
seriously, was that song/performance a joke? I was waiting for Bruno to sit on Stone’s face mid-riff

Woodsy | 6/4/2009, 7:54 pm EST

I have listened to it another 2/3 times and am getting more into in to it. I think it is a good song. Sound was not great but big deal

liked the riff and the vocal melody

each to there own I say

I thought the last album was solid with a good rock feel to it. I hope this is more of the same.

love PJ | 6/5/2009, 5:38 am EST

totally agree with Fail.

PJ is the only one I f’in love.

but the Target deal is disappionted me.

it’s not PJ fall, it’s because i just put more expectation on them.

that’s my fall.

Lukin79 | 6/5/2009, 11:05 am EST

Fail…did you ever think that the group was doing a solid for their friend Cameron Crowe, who is producing the commercial?

Also, you know–whenever PJ makes money, THEY GIVE IT AWAY…they give it to those in need. So if they “Sold Out,” and make more millions which will no doubt go to several different charitbale organizations, then good! The world needs more sell-outs like this.

Now go fcuk yourself

Lukin is owned | 6/5/2009, 1:06 pm EST

seems your opinion is now in the minority :) So maybe you should GFY.

BTW you wrote “did you ever think that the group was doing a solid for their friend Cameron Crowe, who is producing the commercial?” This may be the single most stupid comment on this entire thread. Are you actually saying that Crowe had previously signed to direct a Target commerical and that PJ signed an agreement with Target just so that they could help out their friend? Please explain because what you wrote borders on retardism

Jeremy | 6/5/2009, 1:34 pm EST

This thread is way to long but from what I have read I have to say that Fail is 100% correct.

If posters like Lukin79 don’t see the hypocrisy is this decision you either haven’t been paying attention or are just not a real fan.

I guess it’s PJ that has Green Disease now. :(

josh | 6/5/2009, 1:43 pm EST

these posts make youtube comments seem intelligent.

arguing on the internet…

TC | 6/5/2009, 2:00 pm EST

Lukin or Lukin79, why do you keep posting? You have clearly been owned by Fail and many others, so much so that you’ve been reduced to nonsensical rants about Crowe and telling people to “go fcuk yourself”.

Jeremy wrote “I guess it’s PJ that has Green Disease now.” LOL

jim jarmusch | 6/5/2009, 2:28 pm EST

fuck it…i was hopping for a better song from the band….fuck me….im not feeling it..what the hell…what the fuck..what happened?…this does not sound like a brendan obrien-pearl jam collaboration …im not sure about this…if all or some of the new songs will be like this..fuck no…in that case i want adam kasper back on the radar….fuck you brendan o brien..i was hoping the real comeback of pearl jam from the vs-vitalogy-no code-yield days with you behind the wheel as the master producer behind those pj masterpieces…but you turned my favorite band into a u2 cover band..fuck you!…pj needs to release another song…cause i have lost my faith in them cause of that fucking song…specially brendan…the guy was my hero but he just hit low…to me he’s as cheap as rob cavallo right now…2nd rate rock song…very shitty performance (im looking at you eddie..got tired already?…with 1 fucking song?)…althrough im a big fan of the band since vs…i dont put pj on a pedestal…and some fans must NOT DENY that…this sounds like a new u2-green day product..with bits of solos & good drums..but nothing more…overall it sucks…..why didn’t they came up with a slow tempo song a la “all those yesterdays” or “I am mine”..time to mature pj…specially if you cant clearly handle it (yes eddie..its you again).. but clearly there’s some pj haters here… and im not going to discuss that cause i have that kind of feelings towards some artists out there today too(tokyo hotel..chemical romance..lady gaga..anyone?..who are much, much worse than pj)… as for the promotion of the new album…im a big follower of pj “anti-this-that” kind of desitions but i keep thinking myself now:…if they are so anti-stablishment then…why the hell are they doing conan & giving rights to rock-star video game? the game is awesome & it could get some kids to know pj…but on the other side..putting the anti-corporate pj just doesnt sounds right..they should be out there making free gigs & putting huge posters or sampling mp3’s…in order to support the new material…if later..doesnt work out in the sales department..then why the fuck should eddie care?..after all part of pj’s policy is about NOT bitching about sales or money…(ticketmaster anyone?)..im pretty much dissapointed with this band…and this song was it for me…im still a fan but at some degree…so if they keep releasing shit like this song…i wont buy it…fuck it..i respect myself…definitely…ps:i was listening into the wild..it was decent..& i think eddie should go solo…cause this band is turning into a u2 cover band/clone…fuck it…on other hand..kudos for people like bob dylan, tom waits, robert plant, nick cave & neil young…they keep continuing as fresh as 40 years before…i always keep returning to them when the shit hits the fence…just like it did with this situation…

Jim and Fail are fools!

jim jarmusch | 6/5/2009, 4:54 pm EST

“Jim and Fail are fools!”…ahaha…you guys keep sucking eddie’s dick so much that is beyond my imagination…i admire pj’s work (mostly brendan o brien past collaborations with them wich are AWESOME)…but this song was shit….admit it…its like a shitty new u2 song with a couple of sub par riffs…fuck it..i dont buy it…it was a dissapoint…the lyrics are pretty moronic & the music is very “meh” (or lame if you want to)…they should have performed top class material on that big occasion…something in the veins of “inmortality” or “in hiding”…those are gems…or at least eddie should have saved an into the wild song for a new pj release…not this…on top of that..eddie seems to be a little off when it comes to fast songs…and i admit it being a big fan of him since day one….ps: were are not fools…in fact…in the famous words from the great pete townsend..its just that “we wont get fooled again”..so fuck you…being a fan isnt about raving every single stuff the artist releases..thats being a whore really…

jim jarmusch | 6/5/2009, 5:10 pm EST

“Jim and Fail are fools!”….ahah…you guys suck so much eddie’s (or pj’s?.ejej) dick that is beyond my imagination….you know..im a big fan of them (specially the brendan o brien era)…but even if we are fans…being a follower isnt about raving every single stuff that the artist releases…thats being a whore really…its about discussing the music & share DIFFERENT OPINIONS…so to me this song was a dissapointing start…the lyric is very lame…eddie was tired…the band was cool (chorus a la u2 (the new lame u2) plus a couple of sub-par riffs)…but awfull…plain bad song….they should have released a serious song or something..with heartfelt but zero bullshit…you know..in the veins of “inmortality” or “in hiding”…those are gems & i consider them very good rock songs…even eddie should have keept an into the wild outtake for this presentation…this song was moronic…ps: we are not fools…in fact…in the famous words of the great pete t: we wont get fooled again….if they continue to release this kind of shit… this is pj…not a u2 cover band for christ sake..fuck it..

Crowe is just plain stupid | 6/5/2009, 6:12 pm EST

The new song was garbage. The last record was pure garbage. Do whatever you need to do to sell music but filming a commercial is just stupid. The new cd with a turtle logo and the video game are a last ditch grab for new younger fans and money. They should have been focused on making records instead of sucking up to every dumb celebrity out there. I’m talking about the Olsen twins, Sean Penn, Crowe.

mATTERgOD | 6/5/2009, 9:57 pm EST

FUCK YOU !!!, jim jarmusch! I actually liked this song and can appreciate the fact that they are branching out and further evolving. And I wouldn’t go as far as saying that I follow the PJ boat all of the time. Riot Act and “self-Titled” left a little to be desired for me. However, this single wasn’t at all terrible IMO. Justification to wankers like yourself is not necessary.

We’re happy and excited here in PJ-land! You’re entitled to your opinion, but not much else. Not too shabby compared to “Self-Titled,” minus a few good cuts. Bless you boys on another successful album and tour…we’ve been anxiously awaiting!!!

Anonymous | 6/5/2009, 11:41 pm EST

“Launching a show like this takes a lot of hard work and one of the things that has sustained me over the past three months was knowing that at the end of our first show I’d get to watch a performance by one of the greatest rock bands in the world,” O’Brien said.

ENOUGH SAID

jim jarmusch | 6/6/2009, 12:58 am EST

truth..one of the great rock bands ever….they have my vote..but this was a moronic song with a shitty u2ish chorus and green dayish bridge all over and over and over and fucking over again…i wanted pearl jam…not commercial shit…ps: but conan’s favourite band ever are the white stripes…letterman’s fave are pj….just a little trivia here

jim jarmusch | 6/6/2009, 1:47 am EST

translating what mATTERgOD said earlier:

“can appreciate the fact that they are branching out and further evolving”
- translation = i’ll cheer them even if they release an emo song or a shitty u2 rip off….if evolving means to cover other bands…then bring it on bitch!

“And I wouldn’t go as far as saying that I follow the PJ boat all of the time. Riot Act and “self-Titled” left a little to be desired for me. However, this single wasn’t at all terrible IMO” – translation = im a pearl jam fan…so that makes me an automatic bitch with no thoughts..i review songs even without listening to them cause i’ll always give two thumbs wayyy up..cause..hell..its pj..its gotta be fucking good…they are almighty & i will suck pj & eddie’s dick even if they pooped a song….anyday

anyway..my opinion on pj’s evolution?..i say: fuck it…”im open” or “parting ways” were more original & better written than this “get some..larara..mumble jumble shit….” fuck it….lights years before this inmature song. then pj’s evolution as artists are afterwards? (excluding ten and vs of course)…unbelievable dude…just think about it…the avocado album & this song are nothing like “evolving as a band”…its subpar at best….for instance..no code is light years ahead of those….even the artwork of avocado was shitty at best..inside it looked like a sepultura album…i was like: “fuck me..is this pj? seriously?”..no code’s artwork was BREATHTAKING…and the music..oh man…like a strange marriage of the who-neil young-stones meet zappa-sex pistols-velvet underground….weird but genius at best…awesome lyrics too…avocado & this new song? = NOTHING…lets face it..pearl jam is not evolving like you said..get your facts fucking straight..

ps:..look..im a fan too…respect yourself as a pj fan…dont be afraid of criticism…its not bad…sometimes is healthier than you think….you know what song fits you?…rape me…rape me…my friend…ahahah (hate that fucking song too…but hey…it fits ya’ very well)

Grievance | 6/6/2009, 8:46 am EST

I can’t believe how many asinine comments are posted here. Sell outs? Hate rich people? Irrelevant? Last ditch money grabs? What the f@#% are some of you people on? Throughout their 19 year career, Pearl Jam have maintained their integrity and have consistently balanced what’s best for their beliefs and their fans. This is no different. They have broken away from a major label (Sony) and are attempting to maintain control of how their music is produced & reaches their fans. They are not endorsing Target as much as they are telling other corporate giants (ie Wal-Mart, etc) that they can’t sell their album. Target was selected because it allows them to sell through independent record stores & online retailers. Unfortunately, they need a major retailer to avoid alienating people who want to buy the album. When they fought Ticketmaster they had trouble playing smaller markets. Eventually they had to make concessions so their fans could see them live. This is virtually the same thing. Sell out is such a stupid term. They are being chastised for attempting to sell their music. If no one buys it, then no one hears it so what’s the point? Furthermore, Pearl Jam has always stood for fighting against the corporate machine as an abuse of greed and power. They’re not communist, they don’t hate rich people and they never claimed to. They speak out against the abuse of capitalism- corporate giants (and the politicians who support them) who lie, cheat, abuse their power and exercise their wills over the worker & consumer in the name of greed. At Lollapalooza in 2008 they didn’t tell people not buy BP gas. They asked people not to buy BP gas until BP stopped dumping pollution into Lake Michigan. They want corporate responsibility and accountability. They truly are one of the great rock bands in the world and it’s too bad so many don’t get it. I personally liked the new track but I do realize that PJ is not for everyone. To each his own. There is plenty of Creed and Nickelback to go around for the rest of you.

jim jarmusch | 6/6/2009, 12:03 pm EST

well put….agreed…but stopping capitalism & fighting against the corporate machine as an abuse of greed and power doesnt really justifies a shitty song…thats all im saying…i wanted pearl jam…not u2

joe blow | 6/6/2009, 3:53 pm EST

Integrity? This crap (new music and Target) is the last straw. I’ve made excuses for the band for years now regarding hypocritical moves (verizon sponsoring tour, outrageous super deluxe edition of ten, etc….) It has become apparent that they are just sellouts. It’s a shame cuz they inspired me at one time to stick to my principles, don’t compromise solely for money, and practice things I believe in. Apparently that was their angle, a cheap sales pitch shtick that I fell for along with millions of other people. Oh, and congrats on the Target deal. Can’t wait to see the cool bulls eye logo on your tour shirts. When their new album comes out I will be sure to pirate it and share with other people who are interested (all 5 of them).

Grievance | 6/6/2009, 5:28 pm EST

I’m sorry. Why are people bitching about the Ten reissue? Sony/Epic was going to release a re-mastered version of the album so the band got involved with Brendan O’Brien and offered a second re-mixed version w/ 6 bonus tracks as a second disc. The price didn’t change. They then offered a deluxe version with a DVD and super deluxe version for collectors. No one forced people to buy it. You either didn’t have the album anymore, had never heard it before or you were a collector looking for anything Pearl Jam. Anyway you cut it, the customer got what they wanted. Those who didn’t give a s#@% didn’t buy it. How is this wrong?

jim jarmusch | 6/7/2009, 12:28 am EST

Grievance is right…what does people want then?…a shitty album reissue? like those average shitty reissues from other artists?..fuck it…the new box set of TEN is a killer..its my least favourite pj album from the 90’s..but the whole thing is just amazing…this is what reissues are all about…ADDITIONAL MINDBLOWING STUFF..people..if sony or pj are milking some money from pj fans just like this amazing reissue..then bring it on!…i want more of this…do you imagine a NO CODE special edition with a bombastic package just like this fat bitch reissue of ten?…fuck yeahhhhhhhhhhhh..im counting the days….so stop bitching

Joe | 6/7/2009, 2:50 am EST

If you idiots read the interview with band Manager KELLY CURTIS you would not be saying any of this sell out bull… The band HAVE NEVER BEEN AND WILL NEVER BE SELL OUTS… give me break… read the interview douche bags…. its about cheapest prices for fans and the fact that TARGET will still let them sell the album through the TEN CLUB and to INDEPENDENT MUSIC STORES… they are the exact opposite of a sell out… THere is not a band in the WORLD on the local National or International Level that Cares about their Fans more than PEARL JAM… Not to mention the amazing show they and tours they put on

Lukin | 6/7/2009, 3:42 am EST

TC, and (Lukin is owned)

I didn’t write anything both of you put in your last posts that you directed at me.
Like I said before TC, go back and read slower before you go blabbering your mouth all over the place. It’s not hard. I posted my comments as “Lukin”, somebody else posted as “lukin79″. Can you see the difference? Hint- there’s a 79 an the end of the other guys name.

As for me being in the minority now. Where’s the proof? I know how you like to count posts. So I expect some numbers on your next post. Be fair because nobody else is going to check your work. So use the honor system.
If i’m in the minority, fine. If not, fine. Who cares? As convincing as your argument was about me being in the minority, I still love the song, and the band. If you have any pearl jam albums you want to get rid of, I’d love to take them off of your hands. I’m looking for the vinyl version of Binaural. If not, you are of no real use to me. Unless you count being my personal post counter useful. Get to counting TC.

Anybody ever heard of a band just having a bit of fun with thier music for once? Relax people and wait for the whole album, I kind of thought the new song was great and had a fun vibe! Being a big Tragically Hip fan here in Canada I must say that the hips new album is a bit of a departure for them and you can tell that late in thier careers they are celebrating thier success by losening up a bit and playing some rock and roll! Looks like PJ is doing the same thing and it sounds good to me! Loosen up and relax a bit people, when is the last time you listened to a song because it had a cool beat and not because of it’s political message?

again…i wanted pj..not u2…i didnt wanted a “political song” either…but i wanted a rock song made by grown ups legends…as pearl jam are (in my opinion)…40 year somethings saying “got some if you…” nah..fuck it..what can they do?..i wanted a rocking song a la “faithful” or “red mosquito”…ya know?..good rock songs a la “fucking up”…not a shitty u2-greendayish beat for emos…i HOPE the new album doesnt sounds like this…

bruce | 6/7/2009, 6:18 pm EST

The undertone here is kind of missed. Pearl Jam has been washed up for years. They can’t sell their music alone so they sell politics, causes. PJ are former “grunge” sell outs but more importantly they are irrelevant. In the absence of making anything resembling compelling music they’ve repackaged themselves as a classic rock band. Corporate sponsorships, pretension and nothing even approaching a sense of humor. Those guys don’t need the money from the Target deal, they don’t need anything. All Pearl Jam has anymore is the best marketers and lawyers. Instead of embracing the passion of their fan base they’ve decided to take it all for granted. There is a distinct formula somewhere…number of units moved + corporate money + tickets sold= more and more money. PJ knows exactly what they can get out of this formula and it upon the backs of their devoted fans that they reap the benefits.

Red Mosquito | 6/8/2009, 11:29 am EST

The Target deal is because they have shunned the record labels. All labels have deals in place with retailers. You need at least one big box ally and pearl jam, in a move to stick it to Wal-mart have signed exclusively with target. its not about the money people.I have watched this band(at times to my dissamay) fight the powers that be for almost 2 decades. anyone that is a fan of the band and not just a few radio tunes, knows what i’m talking about

Red Mosquito | 6/8/2009, 11:45 am EST

bruce…. what are some bands you like? just curious. Also if you have ever been to a pearl jam show, you’d know that they are far from irrelevant. They have never sold out and not releasing this album under a label is the ultimate FU to the industry. So bruce, stop being so jealous. Pearl jam and tool are the only 2 bands that have stayed relevant in the last 20 years.

jim jarmusch | 6/8/2009, 2:29 pm EST

i dont care if they are sell outs or stuff like that…i just want good music..no this “got some if you need it”..nah..i tried to like it..but i just dont feel it…it was like some shitty garage band wrote the song and gave it to pj…its a stupid song & the hooks are so lame…im a little bit dissapointed with thsi band & kings of leon…they have made some stupid desitions lately…

bruce | 6/8/2009, 8:12 pm EST

Pearl Jam is a washed up, irrelevant and yes, sellout band. A few reasons why they haven’t been relevant in years. Singing a bunch of cover songs and pretending songs are yours don’t get you many points. Jim and A sum it up about the music. It was their last label that said FU to them, not the other way around. J records dropped them when the self titled record failed despite heavy promotion. Speaking of Jim. Some of you should pay attention to his comment about what being a fan is and isn’t.

jim jarmusch | 6/8/2009, 11:13 pm EST

yeah man…bruce’s not a big fan of pj…but fuck it…im with him….at the end is all about music..and these last years (or should i call..new millenium) has been a hell for me as a pj fan….great shows..but the important part of all…the albums…are pretty lame…subpar songs…mostly after the brendan obrien era…so..i was waiting for this moment like forever and the first thing that i heard of this new collaboration between the band and brendan was this utter shit song….it felt cheap….and i feel that sometimes pj fans rave them mostly because of their “rebel outcast” behavior against stablishment…so they tend to lose focus on the music itself…the political or anti-stablishment part of pj i find it irrelevant cause there are some clear contradictions in some of their actions..so i focus sorely on music…first & most of all..its always about music man…

the real joe blow | 6/8/2009, 11:53 pm EST

I am not as concerned about the whole target/sellout thing as I am about the bands website forum removing any posts that are criticizing them on this issue. It seems to me that these “champions of free speech” have gotten into the censorship business.

p.s.-Joe Blow, I like how you borrowed only half of my post from some other website regarding this very issue. You even used the same fake name you unoriginal bastard. LAME

its like a “GOD” conversation. you all bitch about the presence or absence of god….same thing here….you are all bitching about the most useless thing ever motherfuckers. No matter how much you guys bitch about this, they still fucking ROCK!!!! give me the name of any other bands, who can write some meaningful shit and still fuckng sound amazing….PEARL JAM is the greatest band ever soon-to-be. deal with that.

get real | 6/9/2009, 8:52 am EST

Did you just compare pearl jam to GOD? They haven’t wrote anything meaningful or sounded good in the last ten years. So you keep drinking the kool-aid buddy. They started doing rollingstone and promoting themselves again once they became what they are now, irrelevant.

yeahyeahyeah | 6/9/2009, 11:23 am EST

The majority of the negative comments here come from little idiots who think not one decent thing happened before they were born, and if they don’t like it, then it’s just not good. Others have no idea about the expensive demanding requirements of making music.
This band has funded it’s own tours and ‘bootlegs’ and has been of the most fan-friendly groups ever.
If you don’t like them, go hang your Lady Gaga and High School Musical posters and don’t comment on what is clearly over your head.

Lukin | 6/9/2009, 12:50 pm EST

Bruce is a moron. Pearl Jam dropped from a 2 record distribution deal after releasing 2 albums? I don’t think so.

I can only imagine what it was like behind the record label doors.

Record company Guy 1: “We have this band Pearl Jam on our payroll that only sold close to a million albums their last time around”.

Record Company Guy 2: Pearl Who? How close to a million?

Record Company Guy 1: Between 700,000 and 800,000.

Record Company Guy 2: I say, we can’t keep a band on payroll with a rabid fan base that only sells between 700,000 and 800,000 copies of an album and sells out every show. Especially since they only signed a 2 record distribution deal with us!

Record Company Guy 2: I know, especially in these hard economic times where most bands cant even sell 50,000 records. We’ve made the right decision.

Record Company Guy 1: Yes we did. Hey record company guy 2, hows our new star Ruben Studdard doing?

Record Company Guy 2: We dropped him for only selling 71,000 albums in the first week.

Record Company Guy 1: We’re screwed.

Record Company GUy 2: “Calls Secretary” , Secretary, Get Pearl Jam on the phone!!!

Secretary: Pearl Jam is not taking calls from record labels at this time. They’ve decided to do it themselves from now on and do things their own way.

laughin | 6/9/2009, 1:48 pm EST

I can’t be bothered to read all the comments – but it is safe to say that if PJ is inspiring all this passion, love or hate, there doing what they always have. Rock on.

Are You Serious? | 6/9/2009, 3:50 pm EST

The band did not fund their own tours and ‘bootlegs’. Concert goers funded the tour when they paid for their tickets. They get paid serious dough to tour and be fan-friendly, it’s not charity work.

Dee | 6/10/2009, 7:28 am EST

Pearl Jam’s music is what quality music is all about. They’ve always lacked pretense, disdained silly trappings and glitz, rejected flashy superficiality, which is such an intrinsic part of what newer acts do, but their music always spoke on a deeper level. Their songs addressed issues that ranged from the politically charged hot topics to feelings alienation, pain, joy and everything in between. I’ve stayed with them through their every incarnation, seen them live many times and regret not a minute of it. “No Code” killed off the grunge-happy superficial hangers-on but times have changed and this Target deal, while a bit of a trip I’ll have to get used to, is not going to drive me away screaming. I’m here for the music and the Pearl Jam tribe. Rock on, Pearl Jam!

Jeremy | 6/10/2009, 9:24 am EST

Lukin, please stop posting nonsense. The way you name call posters makes you look like a 12 year old.

jim jarmusch | 6/10/2009, 12:57 pm EST

Dee…it seems to me that you force yourself to like pearl jam….whether they suck sometimes or not..whether they make bad choices or not..it seems a little bit cheap or hipocrit to me…you do it just because your a pj follower…again..im a huge pj fan since day 1 but sometimes i cant take the bullshit like you do..this is what i say: theres a thin line between the artist and their fans…you dont force yourself to LIKE things..it just flows…then your behaviour tells me that if pearl jam releases a bon jovi cover (i know they wont..but just to give you an example…and yes..i hate bon jovi)…then you’ll go: “fuck me…i think it is…i dont like it..it su…no it doesnt sucks..its rather cool..pearl jam’s style..hey…i can used to it..i like it…hey it rocks..its not bon jovi..its eddie..he’s the only one who can do bon jovi…i dont think the song sucks!”…i call it: BULLSHIT!..i agree on “new musical directions on an artist can grow on people as time passes by” cause that happened to at least until binaural…and those years where awesome..i didnt expected another “ten” or so….but its too evident when sometimes the artist falls on a very deep creative void…nobody cant stop that…and i dont blame pj..cause they had released too much wonderful stuff over the years (not much the last 9 years)..but ill wait for the whole album…time will tell..but this new song…i repeat..it a u2 cover song…not pj…ps: dont know too much about free speech or political rights or anti-stablishment so that side of pj is dead to me..they can do what they want to…dont care or ever care…i only expect good music..nothing more…

WMA | 6/11/2009, 12:45 am EST

To Jim Jarmusch,
I completely agree with you, man, it’s all about the music.
Watching the video of this song again, I just want to throw out there the fact that there was something obviously wrong with Vedder’s mic. As simple as this sounds, I think the reception of the song may have been completely different had we heard Vedder’s voice in the same clarity as we heard the guitars.
You pointed out that the song sounds like a garage band gave it to the band. Personally, I think it’s because Vedder’s vocals sounded just as shitty, sound-wise, as a garage band’s do.
Optimistically, I think the song will sound way better on the album.
I mean, I watched Green Day play the next night on Conan’s show and it was mindblowing how much better of a quality they sounded like just because Billy’s voice was heard nice and clear.
Just a thought though

Lukin | 6/11/2009, 1:18 pm EST

Jeremy,

Did I hurt your feelings by saying mean things like the word “moron”? Bruce’s comments about Pearl Jam’s label telling them FU, wasn’t true. So what bruce said was moronic. BTW, using the phrase “Name Calling” reminds me of something a 12 year old would say. There’s probably a place on the Nickelodeon site that might be a bit safer than Rolling Stone. You’ll probably be safe from the word “Moron” there.

Lukin is a Fool | 6/11/2009, 4:11 pm EST

Lukin,

WTF will you get a life. You’ve been posting on this thread for 9 days. PJ are sellout’s, get over it. Maybe the next time you are at their show, in the PJ shirt you purchased at Target, you can send in a text to the gigantic Verizon message board explaining how they are not sellout’s. Then you can go back to your mother’s basement and jam out to Alive on Rock Band. You are a f##king idiot, now STFU.

jim jarmusch | 6/11/2009, 6:47 pm EST

ejej…

lukin = good points on the label thing with pj…but you just got OWNED by jeremy…totally

jeremy = youre too easy to tease man…relax & dont let these kids get on your nerves…stand up dude…fuck em with facts…in my opinion is too late for pj fans to claim theyre not sell outs…cause after all..they were the biggest(money wise too) band coming from that grunge-alternative wave…in the first place they signed with one of the biggest record labels ever through the 90’s & half of this decade…they didnt signed to shit like mute records(awesome label..i still love to death all those nick cave & the bad seeds albums to date..dig lazarus dig is pretty epic)…they signed to fucking epic records..so the “pj are not sell outs” is dead to me…the sole fact that theyre with sony…i dont even care…ITS ABOUT THE MUSIC..they are MUSICIANS first & foremost…ahhh plus they sell each stadium they want…anyday…AND theyre in with that rock star game…so let these kids be…its their fantasy world to believe that such global band as pj arent sell outs..ejej…for me: its like this..pj is commercial..but not a la “lady gaga – u2″ kind of promotional artists-lets do 10 videos per album..but still they are like a passive commercial kind of band & notoriously popular…yes..they did the ticketmaster thing and are aware of some things but…theyre still a very notorious band….so im only counting on the music..and this last song by them sucked ass

WMA = yes dude…im waiting for a REAL pj-brendan obrien revival…im not so sure of that..even with the mic fucked up..i was hoping for a better song…but lets hope they’ll release decent music soon….

jim jarmusch | 6/11/2009, 6:56 pm EST

i meant…”lukin” got owned by “Lukin is a Fool”…

Hater | 6/11/2009, 9:27 pm EST

anybody who does not love pearl jam after vitalogy is clearly a complete idiot or one of those pansies that listen to the jonas brothers, i personally love the song, sounds a lot like versus, my favorite album. I hope the album comes out great

jim jarmusch | 6/12/2009, 12:00 am EST

hater: precisely…i worship pj after the ten album (i think the real pj came after that…just my opinion)….ive been a fan ever since…from the raging rebel fury of vs…to pj’s sabbathical year with vitalogy…then the monumental lapse when pj got struck by a lighting twice & in my humble opinion..pj at their very best giving their respective nods to classic rock acts like the who, zeppelin, neil young, stones or the ramones, etc with no code & yield….tchad blake was kinda cool too…but then it was downhill from that…riot was ok…avocado was kinda ok…some goods songs but nothing more after the brendan obrien era…so thats why i was counting this comeback..but this shit “lara lara got some..blah blah”…u2ish chorus, etc. does not sounds like vs as you said….are you saying that this moronic song sounds like animal?..wrong. go?..wrong. daughter?..wrong. glorified g?..wrong. rats?..wrong. dissident?..wrong. wma?..wrong. rm?..wrong. eldery?..wrong. leash?..wrong blood?..wrong. indifference?..FUCKING WRONG…..the overall sound of vs with this utter shit “got some” = NOT EVEN FUCKING CLOSE…lyrically?..i guess a bit..but still its too u2 for its own sake…

Awputz99 | 6/12/2009, 1:29 am EST

I think everyone needs to relax. If you like Pearl Jam listen to them, if you don’t, don’t. You are starting to sound like these pathetic sports fans who get into fights and arguments with fans of other teams. I think it is time people get a life.

jim jarmusch | 6/12/2009, 1:35 pm EST

Awputz99…no YOU get a life!…ahah..no..just kidding pal..but yes im going to relax a bit…the orlando magics losing the series…im gonna concentrate on that…fucking lakers…fuck you kobe…go orlando!

Awputz99 | 6/14/2009, 10:07 pm EST

Haha. Sorry jim jarmusch. I didn’t mean to offend anyone. I’m a big PJ fan and had a few beers in me.

jim jarmusch | 6/15/2009, 2:34 pm EST

ok dude…but fuck…the lakers just won…haha…time to get a life now…got my lady at least..

Seattle | 6/17/2009, 4:04 pm EST

Vedder, who’s “into harder core stuff” and “likes shi**ing on little girls heads” doing an ad for Target? Target could do better. Vedder is a self righteous, self serving Narcissist whose contempt for everyone is only thinly disguised.

Guero | 6/18/2009, 1:52 pm EST

Man, most of you on here on true morons. I came looking for a link to the conan vid, which i got. But reading all these comments is hilarious. Love’em. Hate’em. I see why PJ supporters would defend, but why do you haters even bother to post? I wouldn’t go to a board for a band that I didn’t like and post how they suck. Have better things to do. If you like them, LISTEN, if you don’t, DON’T. Rip-off of Devo, sell-outs for Target, blah, blah. I love the new song – it kicks ass, and I can’t wait for the new album. So many of the casual fan thinks PJ is nothing more than 10, and that’s fine, they don’t know what they are and have missed.

huber | 6/18/2009, 3:38 pm EST

Jim And the rest of Ed want a be’s, You hate PJ cause your all jealous you cant be them!!!! Your critics but suck at it. Shut your mouths and go eat shit.

jim jarmusch | 6/19/2009, 2:20 am EST

im not passing as eddie…im not trying to be an outsider or a rock critic bashing pj…i repeat…im a HUGE pj fan till the end…but sometimes people must THINK for themselves, focus on the music…NOT ONLY ON PJS INMORTAL IMAGE & STOP SUCKING EDDIE’S DICK SO FUCKING MUCH….this song was mediocre and the performance was subpar…i blame eddie…AND NOOOO…DONT EVEN GET ME THE “IT WAS THE MIC…ITS THE SOUND MAN..IT WAS FUCKED UP…YOU CANT EVEN HEAR VERY CLEAR EDDIE’S VOICE”…OR “YOU JUST HATE PJ” OR “DO YOU WANT ANOTHER TEN?” OR “THEYRE EVOLVING”…CHEAP SHOTS CAUSE WITHOUT THE MIC FUCKED UP OR WITH ALL THOSE SHITTY EXCUSES YOU GUYS KEEP POPPING OFF DOESNT STOPS THE FACT THAT IT WAS A U2ISH SONG PLUS EDDIE WAS CLEARY OFF & STRUGGLING WITH THE SONG…FUCK IT…DURING THE LIVE PERFORMANCE & HEARING EDDIES VOICE I WAS THINKING: “HE PULLS IT…BUT IS HE TIRED?…WITH ONLY 1 FUCKING SONG?…IS HE NERVOUS? WHY? GOD..SO PROBABLY LOTS OF PEOPLE (NON-PJ FANS / TV AUDIENCES) ARE WATCHING THIS…WHAT A PITY..THOSE PEOPLE ARE PROBALY THINKING THAT HIS STATUS AS A GOOD SINGER ALL THIS TIME WAS BULLSHIT…WE (PJ FANS) KNOW THATS NOT TRUE & PROBABLY ITS JUST AN OFF NIGHT FOR EDDIE…BUT STILL WE DESERVED A BETTER VOCAL PERFORMANCE..SPECIALLY IF ITS NEW MATERIAL FROM THE BAND..WHAT A SHAME” you guys know it…

…in reality fans like huber are just pj whores…REAL pj supporters actually find ourselves DISCUSSING the music & the lyrics…we dont care about the band’s legendary status…we just want the best & expect quality music coming from them….people like huber are just waiting for eddie and the rest of the guys to poop any song & then gangbang them…they dont care if the music is moronic, shitty or mediocre…they go “oh…it rocks” and they make the same stupid shit that jim carrey does on that movie “yes man”…for example: if eddie goes: “im covering a fucking linkin park song”…huber goes:”yes man”….fuck that….fuck you huber…you just glorify the band on whatever they do…what the fuck dude?…thats all im saying…people like you got no brains or what?…fucking robots…fans like huber are just pj grupies…they dont watch the performances..they just fuck the band with their eyes…period

ps: im still expecting the better pj….and man…theres a BIG difference between a GOOD rock tune & a MEDIOCRE rock tune…you can tell it…for instance a song like “in hiding” absolutely owns this “got some” shit….and you know it..it doesnt requires to be rock critic to realize that…so again…fuck you huber!

Guero | 6/19/2009, 9:25 am EST

Jim J – come on, get a grip, you dont think that the lousy sound of the vocals was the crappy set up, and think it was EV?? Wake up. Sorry, but crappy vocals or not, the song kicks ass.

MalcyR | 6/19/2009, 6:26 pm EST

The fact that you are even debating this performance and everything else here to do with Pearl Jam shows how important Pearl Jam, are/were?

Huber | 6/20/2009, 8:45 am EST

Don’t mind Jim!! He is a foul-mouth loser. And everything pearlJam makes isn’t great, I hate about 5 songs they did, but 99% of the stuff they did is great, Plus they write their own stuff. Jim get a life, your not a critic, I or anyone dosn’t see your point, your not special, your an idiot. Tell your sister to put a Vedder wig on you and your two can get it on! Write what you want after this! I’m moving on you foul mouth loser. P.S. when you playing for Connan?????????????

jim jarmusch | 6/21/2009, 3:54 pm EST

ahaha..i repeat…YOU GUYS DOESNT NEED TO HAVE A FUCKING DEGREE OR BE A MUSIC CRITIC TO KNOW THIS IS A SHIT SONG….i only hear the sound of salivating whore mouths waiting for a huge load comming from eddies dick..thats all….get a life people..this song was u2…”get some lara lara..mumble jumble..guitar feedback…shitty guitar mini riff….blah blah…” nothing special, original or rocking about this song…ITS NOTHING like other pj masterpieces….totally moronic lyrics and unspiring song…fuck it…come on people…let the grupies do that…

huber: 5 songs?…ahahah…youre the biggest pj whore on earth…fucking pussy

Obama | 6/23/2009, 2:06 pm EST

I love Pearl Jam they are the greatest band ever. I love Bush. I think everyone should be on welfare and no one should have to work. Everyone should just receive a governement check.

I love this song!n Cool album art work too! Can’t wait untill Sept. 22!

This song Rocks | 6/23/2009, 3:48 pm EST

Hope more songs like this are to come n the new album.

State of Love and Trust | 6/23/2009, 4:21 pm EST

Keep on rockin pearl jam. Still rockin after all these years.

pj always doin work | 6/24/2009, 3:41 pm EST

good shit.and for that d bag jim, everyone knows u cant judge a pj song by what hear live.its totally different.so shut the fuck up and if ur gonna talk shit why say anything at all. huber is right u not a critic,YOUR A DOUCHE. PEARL JAM TILL DEATH

pj always doin work | 6/24/2009, 3:46 pm EST

but jim is right bout how some songs and some shows gotta be discussed and not everything is the best.but cmom be pumped theres a new album comin out.

Impartial | 6/25/2009, 12:09 am EST

Come on. Fans will defend anything their favorite band does. First off, the record industry is so different than it was years ago. Again, if you like PJ you will listen to them, if you don’t, don’t. Everybody should stop trying to take “moral” lessons from people they’ve never met. If you think they are sellouts, get a life.

jim jarmusch | 6/25/2009, 2:41 am EST

neither i think or care if they are a sell out band…neither i think im a rock critic…its just that i expect the best from this band..and i think this was a shitty sub-par “mumble jumble..get your boots on..lara lara” song…nothing like other pj masterpieces AT ALL…

to “pj always doin work”:

hi man…and yes i can judge a pj song even if the premise is live and on fucking national tv broadcast…cause normally theyre good live…remember????!!! so fuck it…at least i can catch on with the lyrics & judge the shit out of them if i want to…ITS MY RIGHT…ajaja….like if pj changes the lyrics & music of a song drastically between live sets and studio recordings..like pum!!!..”you guys here we have this new single,we can fuck up the lyrics as opossed to the upcomming single this time around just like dylan..its more exiting and it will be fun!”…bullshit…pj doesnt do that…theres so few exeptions like reviewmirror or the ending of daughter…but trust me..im a huge fan..they dont do shit like that…so what a douche….it seems to me that youre confusing pj with the grateful dead, dylan, led zep or nick cave (awesome bands too)….the point? pj is a hard rock-punk roots based band unlike those artists…pj usually dont change lyrics or the sound of the music when performing live that drastically…they do flawless presentation of songs…they change some solos..the pace…few little words..but nothing that different(imagine in cornice anybody?)…so do not expect this fucking song to sound THAT different from the official release single…remember pj past premises such as wishlist or betterman on live shows before the official singles?…well…they didnt change that much those songs in contrast to the official release singles right?…so there you go…i can fucking judge the fucking song…plus fucking live too…SO YOU SHUT THE FUCK UP AND LET GO EDDIES DICK FROM YOUR MOUTH FOR A WHILE PLEASEEEEEE!…the only thing that could change in the release single is a better clarity of the song…in other words..like a more polished version of it..clear vocals…bass..drums…etc..cl ean up the ussual shit issues you guys keep popping off so fucking much just to make a cheap excuse of this subpar song….thats all….i just think you guys are so intimitated by the band’s legendary status that everytime pj releases some stuff you just shit your pants off…thats all im saying…so fuck it

Huber | 6/25/2009, 10:24 am EST

I had to look, glad I did, Jim ‘Cocksucker critic’ to write pages of shit after one another is telling me and others that you have nothing better to do but appreciate Pearl Jam, Yea you love them! perfect they are not, you cant jerkoff to Eddie anymore because of a ‘bad’ performance’ on Connan?? Get over it you dick! Yea five songs

jim jarmusch | 6/26/2009, 10:07 am EST

huber is an hipocrit

Lukin | 7/11/2009, 12:24 pm EST

jim jarmusch,

You are not going to convince someone who loves Pearl Jam and liked The Tonight Show performance to not to like it. They weren’t going to go play some long artistic weird song that “Jim” could sing along too. BTW, Eddies been messing up the lyrics since “TEN”.
They had like 3 minutes and a bunch of songs that probably weren’t all the way done yet, from an album that was 4 months away from being released. So they played a short catchy song that sounded pretty darn good even with the audio problems from the very first Tonight Show with Conan Obrien ever. Get over it man.

chloe dancer | 7/13/2009, 1:44 pm EST

You have no idea what your talking about just enjoy the music and shut up. It’s none of your business how they make their money. Does anybody talk about you how you make yours. For risking their career fighting ticketmaster for you, not for themselves is pretty impressive. How many other bands or singers had the balls to do that.

PJ Fan | 7/20/2009, 1:37 pm EST

Jim get a life.

Rock on Pearl Jam!

lambandit | 8/1/2009, 2:10 pm EST

in the end, this is a great song and then’ve been playing music for a couple decades. This is a similar song to save you and state of love and trust so it is not a sellout song. The fixer…you can argue is a sellout tune. Although i love it. There last album with the avocado o it was experimental and very enjoyable. I hope this one is too. Anyone can be like greenday and play the same song and change the lyrics.

DJ chuckie j | 9/2/2009, 4:56 am EST

Pearl Jam is tops. I am anticipating the new record, and show in Philadelphia.

grievance | 9/4/2009, 11:10 am EST

Sitting back in Australia reading this rubbish makes us laugh..We’ve been there from the start, but going online trying to “out pearl jam each other” is a joke..If you like the new shit, cool..if you don’t why get online and post negative stuff and pick cyber fights…..And ‘fail’…You are a dipshit…pj have done all they can do to not sell out..and that included sabotaging the band in the 90’s..Your’e probably a metallica fan.. No wonder pj decided to release backspacer in oz, 2 days earlier than the states…..

daveyhavoc | 9/4/2009, 11:26 am EST

you are a bunch of yanky freaks all trying to “out pearl jam” each other..get a life..Do you think any pj member, or real fan would condone this immature rubbish..Put on your favourite pj album, then look at yourself in the mirror..then hang your head in shame.. No wonder the new album is getting released in Australia 2 days before you try hard sell outs… I’ll talk to Mike about it in November… :)

Bob | 9/16/2009, 8:01 am EST

Who the hell cares about this stupid has been grunge band and their boring new record?

jeremyspokeinclasstoday | 10/24/2009, 10:15 am EST

To Rob –

How can you put Pearl Jam and Oasis in the same sentence – I know they shared a stage one time long ago, but that doesn’t put Oasis in the same league.
As for all of you who have criticised the performance, maybe you should have reserved judgement ’til you’d actualy heard the album – how can anyone say the pj’s are too old to rock out, does that mean that any of us that were in our teens the first time we heard Alive should be drawing our pensions now or pushing up the daisies?
As for selling out – pearl jam serve their fans better than any other band on the planet to my knowledge, access in one form or another to virtually every piece of music or artform they have ever taken part in and often for free.

One mouth, two ears – there’s a reason for that!
