How Danny Gokey Became the Year’s Most Polarizing “American Idol” (After Adam Lambert)

American Idol’s third-place finisher Danny Gokey may not have inspired as much online hang-wringing as runner-up Adam Lambert, but the church music director from Wisconsin discovered what it was like to become the victim of his own backlash after he was booted from the show. Season Eight’s early favorite stopped by the Rolling Stone offices last week to chat about his ousting, his now-infamous “Dream On” scream, his thoughts on Lambert and his tips for future Idol contestants — which will come in handy as this afternoon Idol announced audition dates for Season Nine.

Your first auditions made you an early favorite for winning the whole competition. How did being a front-runner so early on affect you?
I think it harmed me. The front-runner never wins on the show — that’s just what happens because there’s so much expectation. When there’s a lot of expectation on someone, people can get disappointed. In the beginning I paid attention to the blogs because I wanted to hear what people were saying, but after a while there was too much analyzing. People are fickle, so I had to let that go so I could remain true and consistent to myself.

Were you convinced at any point during the competition that you were going to get kicked off?
I survived the scream, but I don’t think it helped my run in that race. [The night I got kicked off], Dialidol.com said it was my time to go.

One theory on Kris Allen’s win is that your votes went to him once you were voted off. What are your thoughts on that, and did you expect him to win?
Kris and I draw the same crowd because of the ways we perform and the way we sing and what kind of music we do. I don’t have the answer but I will say my votes didn’t hurt him. I think if Kris had left his votes would have gone for me, but I left so I believe a majority of my votes went to him. But I don’t want to take away from Kris’ artistic ability and his singing. I didn’t expect to Kris to win. But I didn’t expect me to win; I didn’t expect anyone to win. Kris was really a dark horse in the competition and he shocked people with what he did and for good reason.

What’s your relationship like with Adam Lambert?
Adam is a great person. I think people want to cast him off to the side because of what he represented but he has a lot to give to the music industry in this day in age. He’s a personable entertainer and I hope people see that in him.

Your scream during “Dream On” in Rock Week quickly became infamous. How aware were you of the reaction?
I didn’t realize what happened because I couldn’t hear my scream at the end. I thought I did pretty good until the judges [reacted]. I went home and got on the Internet because I wanted to see what people were saying, and I laughed the entire night. I kept getting these images in my head of people covering their ears. It was hilarious. People may have questioned my musical abilities, but I’m never going to do rock, so we won’t have to cross this road again.

So, what can we expect from your album?
I’m going to make good music. I want to do a soul and R&B fusion with a sprinkle of Latin flavor on some of it. I’ll always have my gospel roots, so I think I’m going to put one gospel song on each CD.

What advice would you give to future American Idol wannabes?
Watch the show. It’s not just singing, it’s arrangements, it’s your image, it’s a lot of things, so get that worked out before you go onto the show. I would have spent more time familiarizing myself with more categories of music and arranging the music on the show. I wouldn’t have stressed out so much trying to pick a song; I would have just let things flow and just pick a song and just let it come.

There has been some controversy about the audition process and the involvement of your wife’s death in your the back story. What do you have to say to people who may have gotten the wrong impression of you?
There were some wrong impressions made for me. My wife was a big fan of the show, and I couldn’t watch it because I drove a semi truck during the day and I worked at the church at night. Eventually I started watching on DVR and got hooked. By February 2008 I had decided to audition because it was the last year I could do it. My wife was excited but we didn’t know the road we’d take to get here. A lot of people said, ‘Well he knew what he was getting into.’ I read some rough things, but we had no idea — she had a 90% survival rate for the surgery she was having for her congenital heart disease.

I was faced with a choice four weeks before the audition, and I decided to bury the misery. Music brought me hope, so I want to bring hope to other people through the foundation I started in my wife’s memory, Sophia’s Heart. The agenda is to mix my music with the foundation.

So many people go though their lives being defined by certain things, like maybe they were abused or they were a drug addict or they were poor and they let those things define them as opposed to having those moments become a defining moment that they use as a stepping stone. And I believe that’s what I did with this. I took a lot of criticism but at the same time I’m so happy I did it. Believe me I wanted to take that year off, but it was the last year I could audition. I came on the show saying, ‘I want to show the world who my wife was,’ and now through the foundation I want to show what she did.

I love this guy for being straight-up genuine, but also for his sexyhotman voice. I wanted him to win, but maybe it’s better this way. Maybe Danny Gokey can get a break from the insane, meanhearted scrutiny he has had to endure all season while he was also battling grief over his late wife. Jeez…I just don’t know how he did it and didn’t have a complete and utter breakdown.

TK | 6/2/2009, 6:35 pm EST

Danny was a semi driver and a music director at the same time.Wow.He seems to have lots of surprising histroy.
I still don’t get why some people didn’t like it when he sang songs that were probably for his wife. He made me cry with What Hurts the Most and You are so Beautiful and I bet he’s a great husband, you can just tell he’d be super devoted.Hope he goes far.

carl rogers | 6/2/2009, 6:55 pm EST

he’s a cool dude who can SANG!

Annie | 6/2/2009, 6:58 pm EST

I really like Danny. He has got to have really strong character to be able to rise above all the mean-hearted remarks. I wonder how many of those people would have the guts to say what they wrote on line to his face.
I will buy his album when it comes out. As Randy has said, he has ‘mad talent’. :)

Laura | 6/2/2009, 7:13 pm EST

I melt everytime i hear his voice!

dorina | 6/2/2009, 7:15 pm EST

my love for danny and his music didn’t change… waiting for his cd!

Mariana | 6/2/2009, 7:17 pm EST

With all due respect, Erica, I don’t think you adressed your topic very well. I thnk the reason Danny was subjectd to so much venom was b/c ppl thought he was some kind of proseletizer, which he never was. They poked fun of his grieving when he sang with emotion, then they knocked him for meeting with another singer, Rachel Lampa, and made him out to be a faking widower who didn’t care about his wife and only wanted connections and votes. They slammed him for so many things, but why? I thought your article was going to clear that up, but it didn’t. We all know he was beaten up mercilessly by the blogosphere, but why? Because he is a man of faith? Maybe that’s it. I honestly don’t know, but this whole thing has made me lose some of my faith in humanity, but gain a hell of a lot more admiration for this hard working joe from Milwaukee.

Can’t wait for an album, Danny! Your voice is so hot!

Janice | 6/2/2009, 7:23 pm EST

I get goosebumps when Danny sings. His voice just makes me want to get up and bust out singing with him, which I do constantly, tho it wrecks the song :) . I play his itunes in the car and BLAST them with a huge grin on my face. Danny makes me happy. Now I hope he will be happy, too. He sure has been thru a lot in the last year.

leyla | 6/2/2009, 7:35 pm EST

oops don’t know what happened but wanted to say i luv danny like crazy and hope the hate has stopped and danny can feel the love from his fans and make some superfine music with his superfine voice and i’ll be first in line to snap up his cd!

Regarding Adam | 6/2/2009, 7:56 pm EST

“… I think people want to cast him off to the side because of what he represented…”

What did Adam represent, Danny? Talent? Respect? Beauty? Love?

Who wanted to cast him off? You? Sarver?

And lol on your “album plans” – who signed you? Joe’s Auto Shop and Music Studio?

Frennie | 6/2/2009, 8:01 pm EST

Not sure I like the “…cast Adam off to the side comment…” but I’m hoping that in his own misguided way he meant well. I’m willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. Love how it all comes back to Adam.

linda | 6/2/2009, 8:28 pm EST

I guess a lot of contestants this year had to deal with mean hearted comments, none more so than Adam. Both he and Danny have dealt with things gracefully and with courage. I hope the future will be bright for both of them.

Gui | 6/2/2009, 8:36 pm EST

I love Danny’s voice. It just melts me everytime.
I just hope his album come very soon so I can hear more from him!
Go Gokey!

Katelyn | 6/2/2009, 9:15 pm EST

WTG Danny you come across as a complete tool again…what’s with the “I think people want to cast him off to the side because of what he represented but he has a lot to give to the music industry in this day in age.” comment. Ugh

Linda | 6/2/2009, 9:39 pm EST

I think Danny is a great singer and a sincere human being. He seemed very grounded for being in his 20’s and I hope he is very successful. I will buy his cd and I am 61!

Mitymo | 6/2/2009, 9:49 pm EST

I have never read such mean-spirited blogs as I did aimed at Danny Gokey. (Well maybe Pres. Bush..) Anyway – Danny did not deserve what those ppl wrote. He did what many of us can only dream of – Not only that – he did it with a heavy heart. Talk about making lemonade out of lemons. He’s a good roll model and a singer that I enjoyed listening to! I looked forward to seeing what he would sing each week. Looking forward to seeing him on tour. Go Danny – not everyone thinks like those few – hope he reads the comments on this blog! Good people here.

Claire | 6/2/2009, 11:12 pm EST

I think Danny Gokey is a remarkable human being and an enormously talented singer. I can’t believe what he’s been through personally with the loss of his wife and publicly with all of the unmerited attacks (that I see are still popping up here in this piece)

I really hope that everything works out for him. I will definitely buy his cd, no matter what genre he puts out, cuz I love his husky manly voice with sweet tones. ooh!

Margaret & Rob | 6/2/2009, 11:36 pm EST

Danny’s all heart. Wish I could protect him from the nasties out there, but I guess he must have some intense inner strength to have come thru what had to have been the vilest things anyone could have said about another person without cause, particularly someone they don’t know. Danny, if you are reading this, know that millions love you dearly and wish the best for you! Take care of yourself and that sweet, sweet voice.

Katbird | 6/3/2009, 12:37 am EST

I think the mean to just plain cruel comments emanated from people who saw him as the only real threat to their pet, Adam Lambert. Surprise, surprise. Lambert was still beaten by Kris Allen. Lambert’s talent is buried by his screeching and screaming plus he looked like a wide mouth bass when he let out those screeches. Not a pretty sight…

Since it wasn’t meant to be for Danny, the right man after him won.

jackie | 6/3/2009, 12:43 am EST

i’m so sick of danny getting dissed by the ew (idolatry) crew and other sites (mjsbigblog is another extremely toxic place)

apparently ppl feel they can say anything they want since they are anonymous, even hateful, hurtful, defaming words.

So-keep going Danny Gokey-follow your dreams! You’ve got legions of loyal fans and amazing talent.

dee | 6/3/2009, 12:58 am EST

there are genuine people who reach out to help others, if only with good wishes and sympathy. and there are shallow people who react to everyone with hate, spite, and vengefulness; who are dead inside. i never knew how many until i read blog comments. how dispiriting.

Shane | 6/3/2009, 2:16 am EST

I do not hate this guy. I hate some of the things he says and I do not like his voice.

His voice isn’t original at all… I feel that if you want to hear that sound from a person with albums listen to Michael Bolton *BLECH*…

I don’t know what he’s going to do in the future… What with his huge aspirations as a Glasses salesman but I can’t help but think any album he brings out will be as cheesy as hell.

Also I am very sorry that his wife died and all, and maybe bringing her up every five minutes is his way of grieving, but I can understand how people would think he’s pimping out her memory. Maybe we read too much into it.

SO glad that Adam and Kris were in the top 2. Wish Allison had been in the top 3.

LC | 6/3/2009, 5:59 am EST

Danny and Adam were resented by fans of the other contestants because of the favorable judges comments and the fact they were both considered shoe-ins for the finale. There’s only two spots, and they were considered taken. Don’t blame Adam fans for the flak Danny got. I don’t think Kris is a very good singer either, not better than Danny anyway. Kris kind of won by default.

Anonymous | 6/3/2009, 6:55 am EST

I think this guy is total ass****…
Kris is 100% better :)

Pam | 6/3/2009, 8:05 am EST

Danny Gokey is an honest, straightforward human being who has a golden voice.
I think he attracted haters because some people are so cynical they can’t trust a person who has pure motives. Even now, you see people who assign negative motives to everything he says (he defends Adam with an honest opinion how some negative people didn’t like him because of his image, says hes a great guy/entertainer, yet Danny gets put down for that? Go figure).
Whichever record company snatches him up won’t regret it; America is ready for some soulful/dance-inducing Danny Gokey-we need some positve fun in these times!

Ami | 6/3/2009, 9:31 am EST

The reason that Danny & Adam were both considered polarizing is cuz they were so polar opposites in voice, musical style, backgrounds, etc AND they were both pimped by the judges (Danny mostly just at the beginning). Their fans did see them as threats and the very worst of human behavior came out of that. I can’t believe that either Danny or Adam would be proud of some of their fans comments about the other and I still can’t believe that people won’t just leave Danny alone! There must be a lot of infantile people who have never lost someone close to them who say things like “Shane” said here. The producers were responsible for pushing Danny’s loss onto the public, not Danny – and, you know what? Even if he had talked about her in EVERY show, which he NEVER did,I would have considered that a part of his grieving process and not questioned it. But instead, many heartless and immature blogwriters, especially Kristin whateverhernameis at idolatry, made him out to be a criminal for having a heart. She called him a ‘ghoulish widower’ and worse and those types of comments got repeated daily all over the internet and beyond by equally immature readers of those posts.

Sickening, but that’s how the polarizing thing as you call it came to be.

Beccalynne | 6/3/2009, 9:49 am EST

DANNY! I LOVE YOU SO MUCH! SOOOOOOOOOOO MUCH!

TNTina | 6/3/2009, 9:54 am EST

Danny is an amazing human being.
There are rude and insensitive people criticizing him for the publicity over the death of his wife – which he did NOT promote during the show. Did anyone make those comments during the last show when the cameras flashed constantly on David Cooks brother?

KNY | 6/3/2009, 10:13 am EST

Danny is so cool and so REAL. He isn’t all polished and poised like some others, but I love his transparency and sweet gentle nature. I love that he has such a big heart that he took 80% of his wife’s life insurance money to start a foundation to help needy kids and their families b/c he wanted his wife’s life to mean something beyond her death.
And then his husky and sexy voice with all it’s range and power is just awesome and I can’t get enough. Hope he gets a album out soon and has a lot of fun on the tour. I’ll be there to see him!

Gina | 6/3/2009, 10:17 am EST

I respect Danny so much for being the person he is and standing up for what he believes in. He is a very honest person and he seems like a well rounded guy. All the haters out there are just sad, he has come so far for just being a city boy so why poke fun at him for that. As far as I’m concerned coming in 3rd or 1st, he is still a winner and can do whatever he puts his mind to do. You go Danny!

Chi | 6/3/2009, 10:35 am EST

Danny has been true to himself during the whole season, and continues to get bashed and hated by Adam/Kris fans, the media and slezebucket. He is a warm and humble gentleman who has an amazing voice, and I’ll be one of the first in line to buy his upcoming album.

Musik | 6/3/2009, 11:43 am EST

The truth is, that Adam Lambert was a professional and the other contenders were not. Many were talented but next to Adam they looked like kids.

It’s not Adam’s fault–the guy just wanted to sing and be discovered but it is the fault of AI, the judges, etc. pitting this huge talent against those who were rough around the edges. It sparked those who like to take sides and need causes or controversies to cry about and that is what AI wanted because they were loosing audiences who had become bored. And it worked.

I had never watched AI until I heard that I should check out Adam Lambert. I did and was blown away. I also felt sorry for the other contestants. They just did not have the stage presence that Adam did and got so much flack from those judges for being what they were, unprofessional singers who wanted a chance at a recording career.

I found Adam Lambert compelling and he has so much talent that it became a contest of just him against all the others. He was out front from his first note and people were shocked to see someone of that caliber on a show which usually showcases singers who are green and naive.

Danny’s story was used by AI to create drama. There was just so much manipulating going on by the AI machine that it made my stomach turn.

Now, I know why I never watched that show. I never will again. The whole voting thing is so bazaar. It really isn’t a singing competition at all. If it were, then the outcome or the winner would be much different than it was.

I hope Danny makes it in the music business. It is a business after all and it’s not always kind to talented people.

AJ | 6/3/2009, 12:37 pm EST

Yeah, I’m completely turned off to Am Idol, too. I think it’s a joke that Kris Allen won, when the two best voices in the comp were Danny’s and Adam’s. Kris simply won by default. At least he’s the one stuck with the crappiest song of all time written by the crappiest judge of all time, Kara. I hated the blatant pimping of Adam week after week when really, a professional since childhood should never have been on that stage. It skewed everything and made the others look amateurish. The judges made no attempt to help the other contestants improve with their snarky comments on how someone danced or their song arrangement, when in reality it’s supposed to be a singing competition and people with great voices who are in the biz hire arrangers to help them in many cases.
So much of the season was a huge turn off and I wish everyone well, but I’m done.

Danny, if you read this, I am truly sorry for all the salt the show and its mean offspring media rubbed into your very fresh wounds. The only advice I can give you is to keep singing and stay strong, because you have a fabulous talent that makes people happy! Go with that and have a blast! Ignore the ignoramuses of the world – life is too short, as you so sadly already know…!

Petra | 6/3/2009, 12:56 pm EST

I can’t even think about the bad stuff people say cuz Danny’s my #1 PYT, my Hero and of course, he is SO BEAUTIFUL TO ME! Sending out my love to Mr. Daniel Gokey!

Cindy | 6/3/2009, 12:58 pm EST

One thing I’ve learned from following the online entertainment media during this AI season, is that Danny Gokey could do NOTHING right. They made up their minds to hate him, and to interpret anything he says or does in a negative way.

He has said repeatedly that Adam is a great guy and deserves all the success coming his way. What more do you want? Good grief.

Why people like the EW writers and MJ would enjoy wallowing in hatred of a person they don’t even know is beyond me. I believe the world needs a lot less hatred, and I certainly wouldn’t be proud of flaunting mine all over the internet.

Those ugly things you say, feel, and write about are coming to come right back around to you. Karma is a b#%*h.

Cindy | 6/3/2009, 1:25 pm EST

Isn’t there room for all of them in this big country of ours and even bigger world? I think they’re all working hard to achieve what they want. Now that we all have newly discovered our musical idol preference, we should wish them well and support who you want. Freedom to choose is our luxury and people have been doing it for years.

I’m wondering what all these contestants did to you to get such a harsh words? They came out and sang and said “if you like me choose me” I can’t imagine what you say do not bother them. Remember they are human, too.

Music is supposed to bring people together. Enjoy their talents and be kind, we need more of them around.

Constalicious | 6/3/2009, 1:30 pm EST

So, errrr, Danny. Exactly, WHAT, does Adam represent? Oh, and exactly who is casting him off to the side? Sheesh…

Kathy | 6/3/2009, 1:50 pm EST

For all the people that wrote and said nasty things about Danny. SHAME ON ALL OF YOU !!! You do not even realize how talented Danny Gokey is. Every song that Dan sang he had to learn from the beginning. No one else had to do that. He did not ask the world to pity him. I blame that on the show promoters. I can not even imagine how much saddness he had to hide from the world. And of course I bet that all the nasty people were just waiting for Danny to break. I really really miss not seeing and hearing Danny sing I can not wait till he has a recording out. Dan if you read this I hope you know how proud Milwaukee is of you and know that you have and angel in your heart and it shows. God Bless You : )

BK | 6/3/2009, 2:01 pm EST

Gokey is a dork!

Cheryl | 6/3/2009, 2:24 pm EST

Danny Gokey has a beautiful voice and is a beautiful person who deserves much more credit and respect than he has been given by all the haters on the blogs. Idolatry was the worst of all the blogs. People who wrote and are still writing negative comments on the blog are fueled by the juvenile, ugly, cruel things Michael Slezak and Kristen say about Danny. Slezak and Kristen call themselves journalists – what a laugh. A journalist tries to be objective and they were as far as you can be from objective or professional. The sheep who follow them are equally repulsive. It is so easy to write anonymously on a blog and say things that are hurtful and ugly, without considering that Danny is a man who has gone and still is going thru tremendous pain. Everyone grieves and honors their loved ones differently – how dare anyone judge the way Danny has dealt with his grief. It is not Danny’s fault that because he is so extremely talentd AI designated him as a frontrunner and then pimped his story early on. Danny did none of that. Not once during the competition did he bring up his wife. The only people who did were the AI producers before the Top 13 were selected and the bloggers who kept the story alive by falsely claiming that Danny was responsible. Reading all of the crap coming out of the blogs reminds me of all the ugly things people wrote about President Obama when he was campaigning. The haters were out in full force on the blogs saying vile things about him and his family. These haters that talk about Danny are exactly like the Obama haters. Danny (like Pres. Obama) pushed thru the hate because he (like Pres. Obama) is strong in character and has proven to be a survivor. Danny – you should be proud of all you have accomplished. Your journey was a tough one, but you perservered and you deserve whatever success comes your way.

relyec | 6/3/2009, 2:32 pm EST

He never really truly has anything nice to say about anyone but himself! It’s always some kind of fake backwards complement. GOKEY IS HOKEY!!!

Cheryl | 6/3/2009, 2:38 pm EST

Constalicious: I believe Danny is refering the the fact that Adam himself said he read a lot of negative stuff about himself on the blogs and he had to point out that the competition is about singing and not about all the other stuff. Again, that comes directly from Adam’s mouth. So I think Danny was aware that real negative things were being said about Adam and he thought it was important to say Adam is a good guy despite what some of the idiotic haters of Adam think. I’m sure Adam would say the same thing about Danny. I believe Adam and Kris would despise the things some of their fans have been saying about Danny. Adam and Kris have class and seem very kind and openhearted and a doubt that they want anything to do with the haters who have been attacking Danny and some of the other contestants.

DK: Grow up!

Cheryl | 6/3/2009, 2:50 pm EST

relyec: You obviously have not listened to many of Danny’s interviews. If you had you would never have said he doesn’t have anything nice to say about anyone but himself. I heard him say that he was honored to be amongst such talented people. He said America would not have gotten it wrong if either Kris or Adam won. He said he wishes he could be like Kris because Kris is so calm and cool about everything. He said Adam is creative in everything he does. He said Allison has amazing vocals. He said Adam is a really great guy. He said Kris is a good guy. He said Adam and Kris are like family. He said both Adam and Kris would have been deserving of the win. Should I go on?

Cheryl | 6/3/2009, 3:12 pm EST

The hate that is being expressed on this site is unbelievable. I have to wonder what it is going on in a person’s life or what it is that a person hates so much in himself/herself that they feel it is necessary to rip someone apart on a personal level. It is very sad that people live their lives filled with hate for others. AI is a singing competition and if you do not like someone’s style or voice, just don’t vote for the person. But why on earth would people find it necessary to assault someone’s character, especially when you know next to nothing about the person? I think Adam Lambert must wonder the same thing. When Adam Lambert was asked if he read the things that people said about him on the internet and if the negative things bothered him, he said he was used to it and that he heard worse things said about him when he was growing up. Adam obviously knows what it is like to be ridiculed or to be the target of someone elses hate or negativity. I would bet that he is embarrassed for and a little sad for the fans who lower themselves to the levels they do on these websites.

Mia | 6/3/2009, 4:52 pm EST

People who insist on hating Danny are attention seekers who want people to respond to their posts. Either that, they really are hypersensitive people. When he refers to what Adam represents is not being deragatory, because there is no politcally correct way to talk about someone’s orientation. This is what people are assuming he means…those who are already hypersensitive about sexual orientation (which really says more about them than the person speaking). I think Danny was referring to Adam’s musical talents, love of rock, and his professional upbringing. I am not so narrow minded to think that he was ONLY referring to Adam’s sexual orientation. I think a lot of haters still are blaming his followers for Adam’s loss. Which is too bad, because how they placed in the show is only relevant as far as how long their contract is and who is guaranteed a contract. Adam got the exposure he needed in the show. If people were hoping that they could put Adam out as their poster boy for the gay rights movement they showed up at the wrong destination. That stuff belongs in politics.

Mia | 6/3/2009, 5:03 pm EST

constalicious–

So, errrr, Danny. Exactly, WHAT, does Adam represent? Oh, and exactly who is casting him off to the side? Sheesh…
—————————-

Aren’t you the ones bellyaching about how people are discriminating against him because he is gay…and then get angry when someone else comments on what you already consider as fact? You’re knocking on Gokey because he does acknowledge that people won’t vote for him because he is gay? Here’s a thought…get angry at homophobes, not at someone who acknowledges that there is discrimination. A little sensitive much, are you? Time to grow a thicker skin.

whatever | 6/3/2009, 5:04 pm EST

Gokey haters–

It is not Gokey’s fault that Adam lost. So quite blaming the messenger.

Thank you, Cheryl for a voice of reason (and all others who posted positive responses). I think that even if a person weren’t talented, they should be given the respect they deserve as a human being. THat said, DAnny is an incredibly talented person and I think he will continue to shine on in his life through his good works and his great singing. The haters can’t break him and I think that’s what they hate the most.

I saw him at his welcome home dinner and he addressed the profoundly negative attacks against him by simply saying, yes,I have seen a lot of stuff said about me, but nothing could ever hurt me more than losing Sophia. I will support and follow Danny’s career. I have never been inspired to follow a person’s journey on Am Idol or even to go online and check them out or write a response. Never. Until now. Danny’s story, his character, his gorgeous voice that moves me…the whole package that is Danny makes me want to follow him and wish him well every step of the way.

My deepest pity for Slezak, KRistin, MJ and Rickey (and all those at voteforthe worst) cuz you are all the very worst, the lowest form of human life. I’m ashamed of all of you and your rabid followers.

Alexa | 6/3/2009, 5:14 pm EST

Some people just can’t accept that there are really good people in the world and Danny Gokey happens to be one of them, doing good, living good, and oh, hell yeah, looking so very very FINE!

Not saying that the other contestants are not good people; just discussing Danny here :) :)

Love me some Gokester something wild!

randie n | 6/3/2009, 5:19 pm EST

i really love how positive and excited danny is about his foundation and mixing his music with that to help others. his positive attitude is so infectious that i just went to sophia’s

Michelle | 6/3/2009, 10:16 pm EST

I thought Danny, Kris and Adam were all good singers, although I think Adam was the true talent. The comments about Adam and that he shouldn’t have been allowed in the competition because he was performing since he was young yadda yadda yadda is not fair. Where do you draw the line? I guess you are saying that the rules should state – you must NEVER have been on a stage, performed anywhere but your living room for your family on holidays, and never made it anywhere close to your goal of being a singer. Then and only then can you be a contestant on AI. Ridiculous

Merle | 6/4/2009, 7:57 am EST

I always thought it was going to be an Adam and Danny final with Danny winning because of the heartland vote, even though there was no doubt that Adam was a once in a lifetime contesant and the best ever. I am sure Adam’s stage experience helped him perform so beautifully, but c’mon everybody aren’t we all so happy that we witnessed greatness on AI this year.
The sad thing is I probably won’t be watching next year. I think the voting for hours by one person is riduculous.

SX | 6/4/2009, 10:56 am EST

” …I think people want to cast him off to the side …”

Oh, poor little Danny, I got it, by “people” you actually means yourself, right?
So are you afraid to show us your real feelings or are you just such a HYPOCRITE???

Meg | 6/4/2009, 7:48 pm EST

Such a cool, down to earth guy. Really really dig his singing and his vibe. He’s a class act who’s gonna go far with his music and with his great foundation. Love your vision, Danny!

Cindy | 6/4/2009, 8:00 pm EST

Okay, I have to clear this for some of you. I am a huge Adam fan, but you people are not reading Danny’s answer right. When he said “people want to cast him off… because what he represented” I believe he’s talking about people who are prejudice against Adam’s goth look, his signature wail, his sexuality. The anti-Adam people. The ones who didn’t vote for Adam. I think Danny is talking to his fans. He didn’t have to say anything about Adam, but he complemented him. Danny’s sound isn’t my cup of tea, but I think he’s a nice guy.

THE CONTEST IS OVER PEOPLE, stop fighting and cheer them on for their great future.

John Rick | 6/5/2009, 2:52 am EST

Gud Luck with the foundation, Danny… JLU…

Lisa | 6/5/2009, 10:26 am EST

The Taylor Hicks of this season…but worse. The judges and I (and definitely some of these posters) were watching completely different shows most of the season.

Trish | 6/5/2009, 11:17 am EST

The only time I was impressed with Danny’s singing was in the initial audition video they showed of him. I never got the judge hype for him after that. Ever.

But, that being said, I think the producers used him and set him up to come across like a jackass. The guy is obviously hurting and very naive about the music industry. He was easy to cast in the good vs. evil meme.

My favorites of the season were Adam, Kris and Allison, and I have no problem with how the season ended. Aside from being white evangelicals, I don’t see any similarities between Danny and Kris. If Kris had been booted instead of Danny, I would have voted for Adam. As it was, I did vote for Adam in the end because, in spite of the ridiculous OTT pimping by the judges, I thought he’d earned the title, and I felt Kris would receive an unfair backlash. But now I’m glad he won.

Adam is already the Hollywood & media darling, and Kris won fair and square. Yeah, he may have picked up a few votes from some bigoted Christians, but he had no help from anybody but himself during the entire season. He and Allison were virtually ignored so TPTB could get their Adam vs. Danny finale. Guess Kris had the last laugh after all.

LA Music lover | 6/5/2009, 11:34 am EST

Good luck to you, Danny. I hope you can be successful in your mission.

I need to speak out on a presumption. Kris Allen got all of my votes after Allison Iraheta left. I had been splitting between the two.

Had Kris gone, Adam Lambert would have gotten my votes. From my little chair on the Internet, I saw more people who were fans of more than one Idol contestant and when one of their faves left, if they voted at all, they voted for their other faves.

Kris Allen made it to top 3 on his own merits and with little to no support from the Producers, the Judges, or the Media. It was through the support of the people who actually buy music.

I’m sure that some of the people who voted for Danny channeled their votes to Kris OR Adam. While not very vocal on the internet, there are many of us out here who aren’t so close minded as to like only one artist or style of music.

If Danny Gokey fans voted for Kris or Adam after he left, I would hope that is was because they enjoy them as artists.

Thalia | 6/5/2009, 12:11 pm EST

Danny’s beyond naive, and it’s both pitiful and annoying.

1. first, he has zero experience in nonprofits, and yet has no trouble asking people for money on his website. where is the business plan again? dumb, dumb, dumb.

2. he hardly knew ANY of the songs he sang on Idol…doesn’t that strike anyone as weird? have any of you never heard of “pyt” or “hero”? Ever? Did his semi-truck not have a radio?

3. a gospel song on EVERY record? oh, danny…slow down, son. let’s get you a record deal for ONE album, mkay?

4. someone please find me an interview or tweet of danny’s in which he congratulates adam or kris on the finale or kris’ win. it isn’t out there.

PhDude | 6/5/2009, 1:19 pm EST

Danny is the biggest douche ever on AI. He is annoying and out of touch. I am glad music producers are agreeing he will go away very soon and not have any sort of substantive music career.

George | 6/5/2009, 3:29 pm EST

This is a pretty lame article. It doesn’t address anything about the headline and the headline is just more subjective crap against Danny. How do you measure who is most polarizing? What are your standards? Where do you get your facts?

It’s one thing if you have something factual to report as a journalist; it’s another altoghether to just string together some inane q&a and pack it under a title that has no bearing on it.

Did you go to journalism school?

Eleni | 6/5/2009, 3:51 pm EST

STOP THE INSANITY! The competition is over. Everyone support and buy the CD’s of the people they want. STOP hanging on every word that Danny says. You are reading too much into every word and sentence. STOP twisting his words and comments! STOP making assumptions about his career and his actions. You are seeing only one blurp of the whole picture. STOP concentrating on one comment made by some Ex-producer. Why don’t you concentrate on the fact that the whole season he was never in the bottom and all the positive comments made by the judges. He has GREAT voice and will have a great career… as will Kris, Adam and Allison. Why do you negative people have to ruin every interview he does? Be constructive, instead of resorting to childish name calling and making unsupported accusations.

jan | 6/5/2009, 5:47 pm EST

Why does he always get ripped on? He has done nothing to anyone. He has a great voice and is trying to get foundation going. Why is that so disturbing to all you foolish people? If you haven’t met him and truly listened to him shut up. Give him a break and let him do his thing. I’m sure your all great human beings.

Francisca | 6/5/2009, 8:31 pm EST

I like Danny and always thought he got a raw deal from some but I sincerely hope he really didn’t say this:

” Adam is a great person. I think people want to cast him off to the side because of what he represented but he has a lot to give to the music industry in this day in age. He’s a personable entertainer and I hope people see that in him. ”

I hope he was just misquoted or misheard because, if not, it makes him sound as if he has been living on Mars for the past four months and particularly for the past two weeks. Particularly to RS that has become virtually an Adam Lambert fanzine! Having seen little about any other contestant but Adam in the media, with the exception of the contracted interviews with the winner, and the paps up Adam’s nose over the past couple of weeks – including two frankly dangerous incidents of a car chase and a run up and down the stairs – I have to wonder what Danny’s definition of being cast off to the side is. If Adam is being cast aside, what have they done to Kris? Thrown him out with the trash?

LaughingSoHardPeeingInMYPants | 6/5/2009, 10:10 pm EST

OMG> Danny, I Hope you are somewhere having fun and missing all this BS. They don’t call it Tinsel Town for Nuttin !!

Lizzy | 6/7/2009, 1:29 pm EST

Thanks for another great interview with Danny. Adam and Danny were both polarizing which allowed the dark horse non-threatening Kris to win the whole thing. It is evident what happened. When Danny was recognized as a frontrunner, the Christian boy from the mid-west was brutally attacked in the blogesphere – mostly by those who supported Adam (Glamberts) and found Danny threatening to Adams path to glory. What the Glamberts didn’t count on was that dark-horse Kris (who the Glamberts found non-threatening) would pass their boy for the crown. Danny is a good decent and extremely talented guy. He has a big heart and wants to carry on the legacy of his wife through his foundation and his music. His has a large devoted group of fans that want him to succeed in the music industry and I have no doubt that he will.

Linda | 6/8/2009, 10:56 am EST

I’ve just been reading all the nasty comments about Danny Gokey. what is wrong with these people. In my estimation Danny had the voice and soul that should at least have put him in the top 2. This was a singing contest. Danny, hang in there – you will be a huge success. Can’t wait for your CD to come out.

teegee | 6/8/2009, 12:39 pm EST

Danny is way off base by thinking he and Kris are similar musically. They aren’t anything alike when it comes to musical tastes or styles. I honestly don’t think Danny listens to much current music. He is a classic belter with roots in Christian/gospel music. Kris, on the other hand, is an acoustic pop-rock singer-songwriter who is well aware of what’s successful in music these days. The only reason why people lumped them together is because both are evangelical Christians.

It’s interesting that while there have been rumors all over the internet about record deals for Kris (who has officially signed with Jive), Adam (RCA, supposedly), and Allison (Jive, supposedly), there really hasn’t been anything about Danny getting signed.

I think Danny may have trouble in the music business unless he goes the contemporary Christian/gospel route — that seems like the best fit for him, and he’d likely be very successful. I have more trouble seeing him being successful in mainstream pop/rock/r&b. But I wish him luck!

lovingdanny4evahandevah | 6/8/2009, 1:47 pm EST

Love love love love love DANNY GOKEY. I mean, he’s amazing. Now, Rolling Stone, pls sit down and actually write something enlightening about Danny. There is so much that is great about him and this whole polarizing bidness is just boring as Kris Allen!

ejr | 6/10/2009, 11:47 am EST

First the media manufacture the stories about Danny. Then they say he was polarizing in order to keep their ugly rumors circulating. If Danny became polarizing, which I don’t agree with, it was because of YOU, the media! Get REAL honey and do your homework. All you can do at Rolling Stone is shoot a soft porn cover of Adam? That just confirms what your agenda is towards Danny.

Betcha | 6/14/2009, 12:23 am EST

If anyone reading this knows David Foster, or Danny Gokey, please tell them to contact David or Danny and let them know that the two of them together could make the most beautiful music, that will inspire and be uplifting to so many who need to be in these most unfortunate times. Danny deserves to be mentored by someone like David. We could all really benefit from a collaboration on their parts. Danny/David are you listening? We are all waiting to be listening to the results of your efforts, and the children of the world need you.

Linda | 6/14/2009, 4:14 am EST

Maybe he could be produced by Lionel Ritchie. He has a great voice. He will get a record deal.

rona | 6/14/2009, 7:56 pm EST

hi danny i hope you read that some day to that i really care about you
i could be hard with you that is because i love you so….
listen i think you may focuse more on what you really want to get what you want because i am so sad not to see you as kris ,adam, and allison signed with jive or other producers
because i really want to buy your record
so please make things right and you could alter your style to match the top music now because i think if you could get the right chance you could be a world stare
as simon said your song” you are so beatiful” was a master dgree
go on please danny for sophia
do your record for her

Bruce Kengsly | 6/18/2009, 12:00 pm EST

Danny Gokey and his family are a bunch of narrow minded bigots. He is cocky, arrogant and self-righteous. He uses the bible and the church as a weapon. First comes the video with Sarver talking about their “Godly Love” and how they love each other in the “right way”. Next comes Danny and his family spending an entire evening mocking Adam Lambert. His cousin was stupid enough to post the whole thing on her facebook page. The whole lot of them are smug and ugly inside and out. I can not for the life of understand how he even has one fan with that ugly personality of his. All the other contestants do not like him. They call him competitive. The only one he appears to get along with is Sarver who is just like him. Go away Gokey. Don’t subject the world to anymore of your dark, ugly heart.

grakky | 6/18/2009, 7:11 pm EST

What’s wrong with Danny? First it’s comments like this about Adam “I think people want to cast him off to the side because of what he represented but he has a lot to give to the music industry in this day in age. He’s a personable entertainer and I hope people see that in him.”
and then “I didn’t expect anyone to win.” Uhm, ahh, do you know what you’re saying?

Wildflower | 6/19/2009, 12:40 am EST

Danny’s a pitiful example of how nothing can get into a closed mind but mean, stupid stuff flies out of it all the time. What he did to Adam at dinner with his family was nasty and dirty and typical of the two faced crap you usually find in conjuction with mega churches. What a complete jerk.

Vincent | 6/22/2009, 9:06 am EST

Danny sucks at singing and he’s a douchebag through and through. One of the most ingenuine and hypocrite people I’ve ever seen! He’s the reason I hate christian people. GO TO HELL DANNY! I HATE YOU!

Dennie | 6/22/2009, 6:47 pm EST

I doubt Danny gives much thought to what the haters have to say about him. There are some truly sick people on these sites. So Vincent, you hate Christians and Danny Gokey, well, I’ll pray for you. You must be one miserable person to have so much hate in you, tis not good for the soul or body. Don’t you know it’s been scientifically proven that kind of negative energy can make you vulnerable to diseases like Cancer. You poor poor soul. To Danny Gokey, say what they will about you, there is no denying you can really really really sing. One of the best voices ever on AI. Can’t wait for your CD.

Cassie#1Fan! | 6/24/2009, 9:13 pm EST

People say what they want, people will judge cause there person didnt make it as far or wasent as good! People will be prejudice,
But through the whole season Danny Gokey had me from day one, He inspires people, in different ways. *He’s music and voice- there’s just something to it; that gives me chill’s, i just want to reply his songs over and over.
i can’t explain it; it’s werid that this world has all these pop stars and famous people that they have found & sing there little songs about brake up’s and cheaters, but they Never found the true STAR-Gokey.
i believe Danny’s cd’ will make music history!
I LOVE DANNY GOKEY! -i hope you get Everything you want, Cause you Deserve it.(All)*

#1Fan. | 6/24/2009, 9:18 pm EST

i don’t get what the big deal is about Danny Gokey; singing about his wife..
Thats what he wants to sing about; Everbody ele’s, sing what they want, he just has something good and truthful to sing about. I LOVE YOU DANNY GOKEY.

Millie | 6/25/2009, 7:12 am EST

I like him before and then get bored each week. After what he and his relatives did to Adam, totally hate him and also his relatives!I can’t see his face anymore.Make me want to puke!

John B. | 6/25/2009, 11:37 am EST

Pricilla, Thank you. I am not good with words, but you said every thing I wanted to say. Danny is just an ordinary guy, with a fantastic voice, who put his faith in his fellow man/woman, and only wished for fairness. Why the persecution? It makes no sense at all.

itsjuls | 6/25/2009, 12:24 pm EST

Danny’s quote about “what Adam represented” just makes me sad. Here are just a few things Adam “represented” to the world … strength and depth of character, humility, bravery, fortitude, friendship, helpfulness, consideration for others (especially in duets where he does not work to outshine his partner) and obviously, the willingness to overlook the flaws in those around him to give them the benefit of the doubt. I think the only people who might have been willing to “cast him off to the side because of what he represented” are very SMALL-minded people who are unable to recognize these qualities in Adam because they lack these qualities themselves. What Danny assumes Adam represents only reveals his own character. He has chosen to perceive Adam in a negative light.

SCat | 6/25/2009, 12:40 pm EST

I can’t believe you bothering interviewing this dork. Can he please just go away now. No more Danny interviews. The guy is completely out of touch with the music industry.

mark | 6/25/2009, 1:34 pm EST

not a fan of danny or kris because they can’t sing THAT well – danny especially didn’t impress me – the more he opens his mouth the more I wish he wouldn’t..his gravely voice is annoying…and the whole picture thing…and the wife thing..and he is just full of himself..and the glasses thing? Please. He is sooo wanting rich and fame and I predict he won’t go far…and he talks about his record..umm..where is his record deal? And he isn’t a true christian. He judges others and tries to push his beliefs on them and tells us we “have” to accept them..uh..no..we don’t…he is a homophobic douche

Tori | 6/27/2009, 12:22 pm EST

Danny is amazing. Just because he had a sad story of why he tried out for American Idol doesn’t make him any different. Every year they pick a few sad stories, and he was one of them. Apparently, everyone who says shit about Danny and his wife have never suffered a loss before. Clearly this is his way of coping with it. Music and reaching out to people. You guys are fucking disgusting people to ever say things like that. Just because you don’t like his voice, or the type of person he came out to be, you dont have to sit there and analyze everything WRONG about him. If you like Adam Lambert good for you. But people who don’t like Adam can sit there and analyze everything WRONG about him too. Clearly we all have different opinions, but to bring his wife into something and make him into something hes not is disgusting. Alright.. I love you Danny! Don’t let anybody tell you different :)

Montana Girl | 6/27/2009, 11:47 pm EST

Gokey….shallow, shallow, shallow…he truly has no joy for the success of others.

James | 6/28/2009, 8:08 pm EST

C’mon guys, he’s a regular person with a voice and a wife that died and just wanting to win American Idol. You guys are just hating on him cause you’re probably just jealous that this guy has fans, unlike you. Deal with it. Adam Lambert lost, Danny Gokey lost, and Kris Allen won. Got a problem with that? WEll too late, you should’ve voted when you had the chance. So I say good luck Danny, give you the best of luck.

Rachel | 7/1/2009, 11:54 pm EST

Love him!! Quit hating everyone that is hating!! Danny was awesome and the others were too!! He did what he had to do great person and Christian.. Good Luck and God Bless Danny!!! You deserve it!!

Danny-fan | 7/3/2009, 3:56 am EST

OMG!!! I can’t freakin’ believe how many Danny hater are out there! I mean… this guy has an AMAZING voice… His wife’s death was unfortunate and i didn’t hear him mentioning it further in the show… so just buzz off whoever is saying such nasty things about this great talent…

ANywayz… can’t wait for Danny’s album… =) I can GUARANTEE it’s gonna be MAGICAL!!! XD

G’luck Danny… eventhough you probably don’t need it since you have so much going for you anyway! =D

“he hardly knew ANY of the songs he sang on Idol…doesn’t that strike anyone as weird? have any of you never heard of “pyt” or “hero”? Ever? Did his semi-truck not have a radio?”

How old are you, 5? PYT was a Micheal Jackson song! You know, the king of pop? It was MJ week! I’m sure that songs some other contestants that week you had never heard either.
And Hero is a song by Mariah Carey, another iconic person in the music industry.
WHO’S the one without a radio?

Jack | 8/2/2009, 10:34 pm EST

Michelle, be quiet!!!! Why would he sing songs he never knew? Stop hating! Danny is great!

nnamseloc | 8/13/2009, 5:50 am EST

danny man, cant wait for your new album…… he is just so greaat in singing.. better than adam lambert.

Allen | 11/22/2009, 10:48 pm EST

Some of these comments are just rude. If you ever never been face to face with Danny then you truely don’t know him. Believing everything you read in a blog or online. This is America and even Danny should be able to live his dream. So many people bash other people and judge them like they are better. Danny is doing a good thing with his foundation and most people just sit around doing nothing. So what if he didn’t win the American Idol contest. He is better off. To the person who said their getting tired of hearing about Danny Gokey, well I might just write a book about him. I bet that would piss you off!
