Jay Leno: Conan O’Brien Doesn’t Need My Advice

When Jay Leno hands the keys to The Tonight Show, the late night vehicle that’s been his home for the past 17 years, over to Conan O’Brien tonight, he’s not going to toss in any sage wisdom along with them.

“I don’t need to give Conan advice,” Leno told Neil Strauss for our latest issue, on newsstands now. “Conan’s very good at what he does. Conan was a writer before he was a performer. So when he started the show, his performing skills weren’t particularly honed, but the writing was sharp. He was saying clever things; he just hadn’t learned how to say them in the physically funniest way yet. His show has been number one [in its time slot] for the past 15 years. So I’m sure he’ll make that transition fine.”

Friday night marks Leno’s departure from The Tonight Show, as he passes the torch to O’Brien (the new Tonight host is even Leno’s last scheduled guest). The transition has been a lengthy one — Conan’s move to 11:30 was first announced five years ago. “Here at NBC, they have this thing that they like you to leave before you peak out and you’re over the top. And that’s what they wanted to do with me,” Leno says. “I said, ‘Guys, whatever you want to do.’ I’ve never been one of these guys that breaks up with a girl and goes, ‘But why? If I do this, will you go out with me?’ I’m more like, ‘Babe, if you don’t want to see me, I’m gone. It’s over. Thank you.’ “

But as his Tonight departure approached, Leno tells Rolling Stone that he realized he still enjoyed his gig (and NBC, of course, still enjoyed his ratings pull). After exploring a nightly 8 p.m. slot, Leno and NBC considered something a little later. “I realized there hasn’t really been a successful 10:00 show launched in probably five or six or seven years,” Leno says. “CSI and Law & Order — those are all good shows, and they do very well, but any new ones that come in just fall by the wayside. And 10 seemed to be turning into the new 11:30. Even people in their 20s go, ‘Oh, man, I can’t stay up till 12 anymore. I gotta get up. I carpool, and I’m working two jobs.’ So I said, ‘Well, how about 10? We’ll try and do something different from what The Tonight Show is. Whatever you want to pay me is fine.’ ”

Leno is cautiously optimistic about his prime-time chances. Other observers are less generous — Sumner Redstone, whose Viacom owns CSI home CBS, went as far as to say that the crime drama would “beat the hell” out of Leno.

“Oh, that’s fine. I’m going to go with that one,” Leno says. “They will win. Hopefully we’ll catch them on the reruns. It’s like a Cadillac costs more than a Volkswagen, but if you sell enough Volkswagens, you succeed because of volume.”

I wonder if Neil and Jay went sarging together.

I hope Jay has enough cash to keep his 300 cars waxed.

I can’t wait til Monday. Awaiting entry into the CONE ZONE…..

(with Pearl Jam on the backburner, no less. this is gonna be goooood…)

Hello | 5/29/2009, 6:04 pm EST

I wonder what Letterman says

Anonymous | 5/29/2009, 6:14 pm EST

whatever you say.. we’re gonna miss him and his jokes about limbaugh

Bunny | 5/29/2009, 6:22 pm EST

Jay Leno is the funniest man on TV. I doubt that I will give up any sleep watching the Tonight Show after tonight

HIYA | 5/29/2009, 6:55 pm EST

Wow even though im 20 and have class at 8:30 for the past 2 years. Iv stayed up everynight to watch Jay Leno and Conan make me laugh my a** off. Great to know that ill be still seeing Leno and Conan everynight. Looking foward to monday.

Kyle | 5/29/2009, 7:04 pm EST

Jay Leno is a funny guy; though I am not a fan of his humor.

I think no matter what anyone says Leno did a solid job running the Tonight Show. Carson believed Letterman earned that spot. I still believe it should have been Letterman’s but Leno was able to throw all that non-sense out and stand firm for 17 years.

The question now will be what Conan O’Brien will be like now on the Tonight Show? I think he will learn like Dave did that its tougher on “prime time of late night tv” than being on 12:30.

ron | 5/29/2009, 7:47 pm EST

Conan will bomb. I can’t see his show getting any better because He’s moved up an hour. He’ll never be able to fill Jay’s shoes. He’s silly, not funny.

Moira | 5/29/2009, 7:54 pm EST

Well, I think both Conan and Jay have strong points. Jay is more stand-up orienteed, while Conan does weird, freaky, skit-based humor. I prefer the skit-based, but that could also be because by the time I watch Conan, I’m sleep-deprived and giggly. But yeah, Conan was Letterman’s protege, kinda, and Letterman would send the people from his audience overflow room to Conan’s show when Conan was having problems getting an audience, so I’d say Letterman likes Conan and wishes him well.

Kang | 5/29/2009, 11:06 pm EST

I think the studio dropped the ball on this one. They should have brought back Arsenio Hall to take over for Jay.

Ryan | 5/30/2009, 12:13 am EST

Ron: “Conan will bomb”

hahahahahahahahaha you’re an idiot
that is all

Conan sucks | 5/30/2009, 2:44 am EST

Conan sucks, he’s not funny at all. Jay Leno is so much better, what a loss. Letterman’s gonna kill the ratings now

Max | 5/30/2009, 4:24 am EST

Leno did a highly respectable job with the Tonight Show. I think the fact that he is a highly likeable guy also helped with some of the comedy that did bomb. I enjoyed headlines, jaywalking and lots of his comedy skits. People though need to give Conan O’Brien some space, he is not Jay Leno, his comedy is different, his version of the Tonight Show will be different. I do believe he will carry the tradition of the Tonight Show just fine and the show is in great hands. I love his interviews with celebritys, it’s fun. Some of his comedy skits on Late Night with Conan O’Brien were corny, but I think that was a part of the joke and his sense of humor. The saying “so bad it’s good” springs to mind. He will be fine, he is a seasoned pro with 17 years of experience and his writing is amazing. He will reinvent himself, people just have to let him run free.

Joe in Phoenix | 5/30/2009, 5:17 am EST

Some people like apples, some people like oranges. I truly think Conan O’Brien will kill the Tonight Show. He really is not that funny. He also better change his hair style, he’s starting to look like a Red Cockatoo. I’ve never liked Conan and I absolutely do not see that ever changing. I will be sticking with Jay Leno. I really hope he shows more of his cars!

Mike/Houston,TX. | 5/30/2009, 5:52 am EST

After Carson left – it was over for me. I happily became a more serious DAVID LETTERMAN Show viewer, and when CRAIG FERGUSON took over the Late Show, I followed to that as well, because Ferguson is totally perfect in this genre. Conan is boring, I can’t sit through five minutes of him nor his shows. NBC definitely dropped the bomb on this one – they should have stole CRAIG FERGUSON for the Tonight Show because Ferguson is quite a captivating entertainer who pulls out all the stops, frills and keeps folks on the edge of their seat. Ferguson is an enduring all ’round entertainer much like Johnny Carson was.*** Joe In Phoenix – you’re hilarious! Red Cockatoo indeed, LOL!

Meh | 5/30/2009, 6:22 am EST

“Joe in Phoenix” you are retarded.

MURPHY | 5/30/2009, 1:14 pm EST

CONAN IS KING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Cant fucking wait. Jay Leno made old ladies laugh, Conan is for the younger generation like me. I mean he wrote for the fucking SIMPSONS. CONE DOG!!!!!!!!!!!!!

David Letterman | 5/31/2009, 10:36 am EST

Conan Sucks.

mousey | 5/31/2009, 12:23 pm EST

good move putting in Conan because he’s the only guy who could potentially stand up to the amazingness that is Letterman. Luckily (for everyone with taste) Tivo exists so now we can enjoy both.

Allem from California | 5/31/2009, 5:28 pm EST

Conan, you fucking rock man! Can’t wait for tomorrow night, I will miss Kevin Eubanks though. For anyone who doubts Conan’s skill, youtube some of his episodes during the writers strike, ABSOLUTELY great!

Ari | 6/1/2009, 4:59 pm EST

Conan is for edgy 30 year olds, Leno is a class act. Letterman is polished. Ferguson is for the expats. Daly is for music buffs and Fallon is for the 20 somethings.

K WHITE | 6/1/2009, 5:15 pm EST

I CAN’T EVEN STAND TO LOOK AT CONAN…

Steve | 6/1/2009, 7:00 pm EST

Conan will give this show exactly what its needed for the past 10 years. A complete overhaul. He will turn it on its head and what was at one time a classic show will once again be relevant to people under fifty-five.

mike | 6/1/2009, 11:35 pm EST

I’m pulling for Letterman. Don’t know if he’ll win or not. But Letterman goes after the right in a way that I’m not sure Conan has the balls to do. We’ll see.

Jay | 6/1/2009, 11:39 pm EST

I like Leno and watched him consistently for years. Letterman is definitely a superior interviewer compared to Jay, but his show is just more fast paced and funnier. Whatever Jay’s detractors says, he kept the Tonight Show top of the ratings for years.

ConanSucks | 6/1/2009, 11:56 pm EST

His side kick is even worse. They should have the show to Wanda Sykes.

The Intl | 6/2/2009, 3:12 am EST

Conan is NOT funny. He’s stupid. He is unfunnily stupid. Now it’s official: NBC has the three stooges under contract: Conan, Fallon, Daly.

Dan | 6/2/2009, 3:51 am EST

I just saw the first Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien, and it sucked. Conan will not make it two years before NBC gives the show back to Leno, or will find a minority to host the show. Conan just doesn’t have the joke telling skills to keep the audience. It doesn’t take an Einstein to figure out that the host of the Tonight Show needs to be a joke teller, like Leno and Carson were. We already have enough mindless, slapstick, seat of your pants unstructured comics out there, and the NBC execs really screwed up with giving the show to Conan. I guarantee after the novelty wears off, the ratings for the show will tank, and NBC will be planning for a replacement for Conan. Most people like joke tellers first, and there is no really good late night show with a good joke teller on tv right now.
The execs at every network covet the younger audiences, because they generally spend more money, but we have an over abundance of younger, late night shows which feature hip, silly, unstructured comics. The original Late Night with David Letterman was the show that was the gold standard for hip, young people shows, and the networks have been trying to copy that format ever since, but what we have now is overkill with Letterman, O”Brien, Ferguson, Kimmel, Daly,
Fallon, all trying to capture the same young, hip late night audience. But they forgot about
their bread and butter audience. Regular people between 35 to 65 who are used to a great old fashioned comic with great timing, not just another unstructured, cookie cutter lame college frat boy type comic with no talent.

cav | 6/2/2009, 9:08 am EST

It blows my mind that people think Jay Leno is funny. The audience claps at his jokes instead of laughing. I think leno is for people who have no sense of humor and have to be told what is funny.

DY | 6/2/2009, 11:37 am EST

Jay Leno’s comments in the interview about not having to have all the money and not touching his tv money made me sick: if you don’t have to have all the money, you don’t need to draw a $30 million salary.

Anonymous | 6/2/2009, 12:25 pm EST

Conan is as painful to watch as Leno’s completely scripted, predictable, and force-fed B.S. interviews.

Go Letterman! Stay real.

joker | 6/2/2009, 1:57 pm EST

for the all morons who love conan and disparage jay leno…you have no idea what true talent is…your just bunch of mindless dolts who like slap-stick humor…its merely a differential of intelligence and perception…conan lovers are average minds …leno lovers are smart and like well though out jokes. so if your gonna respond to me by saying “you’re a retard” try to think and come up with something with an impact!

John | 6/2/2009, 3:55 pm EST

I think Conan bombed last night and for his first guest to be Will Ferrell what got last night was an OVER ACTING ACTOR who can’t get out of character and host who was nervous, uncomfortable and tends to over act when nervous or uncomfortable. Conan should CHILL maybe change to decaf and as for Will they both combined to make what I think GOOFY at Disney would say is, THEY ARE TOO GOOFY!
Last night we changed channels to Letterman.

John | 6/2/2009, 4:00 pm EST

Last night we changed channels to Letterman. Conan has arrived at number 1 but he does not understand, and I hope he learns to CHILL a bit and get into a rhythm…. Also the band needs a singer… Kevin and the tonight show band are a tough act to follow and they were not prepared.

Sad and bored | 6/2/2009, 4:10 pm EST

Conan will kill the tonight show, his brand of humor is only good for really late at night whan you are half asleep. He is just not that funny. He has no sense of telling a joke. His bits are way to long and shows no imagination. I doubt he will make the transition before he has killed al of the viewers.

yas_in Dallas | 6/2/2009, 11:04 pm EST

Conan is good for late late night not the time slot that competes with Letterman and night line, which I think ABC will pick up more viewers migrating form Conan. I saw his first show last night, he was terrible. It won’t be long before NBC will find a replacement. If any Jay Leno is needed now, his humor will be needed for these times of hard times, but it was planned they he would give it up to Conan long before he knew he would be needed.

PimpBot5000 | 6/2/2009, 11:05 pm EST

I thought Conan did a great job last night. He’s obviously trying to find a way to appeal to the 11:30 viewer and keep his base. It’s a tight-rope walk, but he’s the best one to do it.

I don’t dislike Leno, but he never really made me laugh. I always felt he explained the jokes too often and the Jaywalking and Headlines bits aren’t really funny as a result of him, but the people he exposes. His stand-up in the 70s and 80s was great, but I think he became way too watered down when he got “The Tonight Show”.

You really can’t define someone as funny, but Conan’s background is about as close as it gets. The only two-time Harvard Lampoon editor in that publication’s history, writer of some of the best Simpsons episodes of all-time, in the years it was prime, and a solid experience writing with SNL.

I think he did a great job carrying on the absurdist legacy that Letterman left “Late Night” and his respect for history and legacy of “Tonight” will certainly make him an ideal host.

Joker | 6/3/2009, 12:03 am EST

O’Brien yes you do need Leno’s advice. Why would you pick Vedder the cocky pickfucker to play music for the first show? You just jinxed your show Conan.

loved the Rodeo Blvd spree | 6/3/2009, 2:53 am EST

that was pure classic Conan and beat any skit Leno did in 15 years

Benson | 6/4/2009, 12:39 am EST

You know, I thought the first show was a little lame but the comedy last night and tonight were much better… Even my wife, who never liked Conan on Late Night, laughed at the Twitter sketch last night, and YouTwitFace was probably the best monologue joke I’ve heard from any host in ages.

BTW Joker, I think it’s awesome that you’re telling us what real comedy is. With a name like Joker, you should be the King of Zing!

Brian | 6/4/2009, 12:47 am EST

Jay Leno is not funny at all. His “one liners” are ridiculously bad and his jokes are so cheesy that, everybody including children can understand them. Conan is so much better at running the tonight show than Leno.

Ben | 6/4/2009, 1:12 am EST

Conan is not funny at all.
A legend in is own mind ,it , “The Tonight Show” will never be the same.

Comedy Writer | 6/4/2009, 2:01 am EST

Jay Leno was never funny but at least he was a gracious interviewer. Conan isn’t funny, has no sense of timing and tries to out-do his guests. (Will Ferrell was the best he could get for the debut show? A no talent interviewed by a boring guy. YAWN) Craig Ferguson is the FUNNIEST GUY ON LATE NIGHT, hands down.

Brooke | 6/4/2009, 8:27 pm EST

Conan is a smart mouthed rude creep. He’s never funny or even slightly entertaining. I’d settle for entertaining but his ego gets in the way. So sorry to not have Jay to look forward to and can’t wait for September and his new show. Jay might not be the funniest person on TV but he’s a wonderful host and very gracious to all his guests. Something Conan isn’t. Conan want to steel the limelight even from his own guests. And his show so far looks beyond stupid. But I never liked him so why would I start now?

Whammy | 6/5/2009, 9:37 am EST

Conan’s humor appeals to those who think that blowing a fart is comedy.

Conanisgod | 6/6/2009, 11:41 pm EST

To all the Conan haters, suck it long and hard because he’s not going off the air anytime to soon

flkmn | 6/7/2009, 3:28 am EST

I’ve never seen so many idiotic words in one place since Bush’s farewell address. Leno was mainstream and afraid to push the limit. Conan is slapstick, but it’s good. Slapstick and deadpan are two different things completely. And seriously, Jay and Kevin were alright, but it’s nothing to Conan and Andy. It’s like playing a Bob Dylan record to a Simple Plan fan. They just don’t get it.

tg23 | 6/7/2009, 10:33 pm EST

Thank god Leno is off (for now). Leno had horrible jokes and was even worse at interviewing people. Watching Conan is like being around with a group of friends there seems to be a bigger connection. While Leno was boring, stale, and awkward.

Dudeman | 6/7/2009, 10:44 pm EST

“Comedy Writer” says Craig Ferguson is the funniest guy on late night!?!?! Good lord…I guess you don’t really have a sense of humor.

Conan is 10 times funnier than Jay…not sure his brand of comedy will fly in the earlier, more stale, time slot…but we shall see.

Mr.Blunt | 6/8/2009, 5:13 pm EST

I cant stand Jay Leno. He is such an egotistical prick. He’s not funny at all. I don’t know how he’s survived 17 years on the tonight show. Can’t he just end on a high note and go away forever! But no. He has to come back for more. Like the greedy power hungry egotistical scumbag he is!

Bernie Lomax | 6/8/2009, 7:24 pm EST

I am so glad Leno’s gone. What a total bore he was. That new show he’s doing in the fall. I give it 3 to 6 months before it get’s the ax. I love Conan. I think he’s doing an excellent job! Now someone only needs to replace that dumb ass Craig Furgeson! Who only laughs at himself. Hey Craig everyone knows you don’t read the cards when you interview people. So stop tooting your own horn and tearing them up every time you begin your interviews. You dumb annoying Scottish drunk.

shnaz | 6/8/2009, 10:55 pm EST

I think the comedy is rather bland regardless of who hosts the show. (It doesn’t really stack up to the wit of Stephen Colbert at all).

Jenny Janes | 6/9/2009, 3:18 am EST

I love Jay. The guy was a natural.
He made me laugh.
I have listened to Conan and I just think he seems too silly too.

I’m sorry but the network made a big mistake here.
I am finding Fallon not funny either. He seems to be trying too
hard. Now I remember his first name is Jimmy.

I will be waiting when 6 mos comes and I pray there will be a smart one out there to snatch Jay up and
I can tune in to Jay late nights.

Jay please come back do not retire
you are too young yet. And I agree with someone who said you seem to be a work a holic.

You look healthy and have young genes. I think they liten your hair becuz it was just too dark for t.v.

I know I have same issues. I liten my hair even though I am dark headed.

It does show up better on t.v.

The best to you guys.
Jenny Janes in the house.

jadedeyes | 6/9/2009, 4:34 pm EST

Say what you will about Leno, he may not be exactly the most sharpest and funniest of hosts and he comes across with an ego as big as his chin, but in hindsight he probably wasn’t the worst considering the alternatives. There was a time when Conan was actually funny (when he had Andy Ritcher as his side kick) but with Andy’s departure his shtick became increasingly bizarre and stale and less funny, I like Conan well enough, but his appeal for me faded almost a decade ago. I doubt there isn’t anything about Jimmy Fallon I could say that hasn’t been said already. He lacks charisma, talent, comedic timing and ability, the “look” he’s just another overpaid SNL intern that happened to get lucky. He’s nervous, obnoxious and with each joke attempt you can pretty much tell he’s literally begging you to laugh and just go along with it. Personally seeing that bug eyed slack jawed hack hosting late night is an atrocity and further proof NBC needs the gas. Thank God SNL is on an upswing.

JudyD | 6/10/2009, 12:11 am EST

Let’s not forget, all these hosts have WRITERS and sometimes they click and sometimes they don’t. Everyone’s idea of humor is different. Personally, I watched Johnny Carson forever, enjoyed Leno’s interview style, could have egged his writers at times for the poor monologue material, and Conan is too juvenile for me. But I’m 64 and networks don’t care what people my age like. Since I’m still working, getting up early will be easier, as now my new bedtime is 11:00 p.m. Goodnight “Gracie”….

melinda | 6/13/2009, 8:45 am EST

I’ve tried to watch Conan, but keep switching over to Letterman. Conan’s comedy gets old real fast. I miss Jay’s skit’s and his way of interviewing his guests. Picking Will Ferrell for his first guest says a lot about what we’ll get with Conan.

Hutch7 | 6/18/2009, 3:27 pm EST

Prancing around the stage playing with his hair and telling lame jokes…I now watch Colbert and Letterman! When is Jay coming back?

Anonymous | 6/19/2009, 12:19 am EST

FUCKIN LOVE CONAN!

Manny | 6/25/2009, 4:10 pm EST

Conan has been and always will be funnier than Jay Leno. Jay didn’t even deserve to get the Tonight Show in the first place. Conan’s Tonight Show has an intangible “throwback” feeling that makes it reminiscent of Carson’s Tonight Show. Conan is bringing the show back to what it should be.

R_UNuts | 6/30/2009, 12:30 pm EST

Conan will drag The Tonite Show down to a ratings level equal to Katie Couric’s news show. Conan’s is dry, stiff and NON-humorus. Bye Bye NBC. Not a letterman fan either, Hello History Channel.

DISLIKE CONAN | 7/3/2009, 4:15 am EST

Seriously this dude isn’t funny..

He must be related ,or family to some old NBC Excec..

He has no talent..

Jay leno ruled..

Michele | 7/4/2009, 12:03 am EST

I can not wait for Jay Leno to come back to television. I do not know what happened to conan as he is not funny anymore. I probably outgrew his juvenile humor. Jimmy Fallon I won’t even waste time on him except to say he needs to go. I now watch reruns of Frasier and Sex in the City. Hurry back Jay we need some funny on the television.

Conan vs Jay | 7/9/2009, 1:28 am EST

I don’t watch the tonight show anymore now that Jay is gone. Thankfully Jay will be back on “The Jay Leno” Show coming in fall. Kind of wished it happened right after he left the tonight show though

Conan Bonehead | 7/9/2009, 2:24 am EST

For those of you who are in love with Conan, don’t forget use the screwdriver when you open your dorm or trailer doors. Conan reminds me of the movie “Idiocracy” where the average person is too dumb to communicate. Jay is constantly supporting activities which actors enjoy being a part of. Jay was good at getting viewer from various demographics (oops, locations for you Conan fans)

G.W. Bush | 7/9/2009, 11:55 pm EST

Conan is dumber than me and just as funny. Hey let’s have another war!

mike chechel | 7/15/2009, 11:56 pm EST

i dont know what happened to conan but he is not funny anymore, he had a much better show when he was on late night, he doesn’t use the actors in the audience anymore or do any of his funny skits anymore, i gave his tonight show a chance for over a month, but now i’m watching letterman he is so much funnier.

conan yuk | 7/18/2009, 8:21 am EST

Never liked him on his late show and now he is wrecking the tonight show..get him off NBC …ya made another mistake.

ranger | 7/29/2009, 1:10 am EST

Leno is hilarious; and so is craig ferguson…Conan needs to go back where he came from…

justmesayin | 8/4/2009, 2:50 am EST

Conan has been telling the SAME jokes for a decade: Charles in Charge theme, “i’ll even watch the show tonight, and I’m not a fan”, playing with his hair, making sure he throws in something “gay” in his monologue, and on and on and dreadfully on…
Ok, you had you’re little late night show … time to say bye.
ugh

JLN | 8/13/2009, 12:14 am EST

I miss Jay Leno. I cannot wait for him to come back on. Conan isnt funny most of the time and he doesnt have very good guests and he is always flipping all over the stage playing with his hair. What happened to the dialogues like Jay and JOhnny Carson did? What happened to actually interviewing the guest with some class. Why the change in TV Setting? We all I think for the most part liked that setting and I think Carso Daily could of filled those shoes better than Conan or even Jimmy Falin which I also love to watch. I liked Conan at late night but not now.

anonymous | 8/13/2009, 10:39 pm EST

Absolutely hate Conan (coming from a high-schooler). No sense of delivery. Not funny. Like watching a second grader.

noname | 8/21/2009, 3:04 am EST

I can’t wait for Jay to come back. Conan just isn’t funny; his humor is targeting an unsophisticated audience. He was probably successful at the later night slot because the audience was half asleep. Can’t imagine what NBC execs were thinking.

Very amused at the irony of Leno fans calling O’Brien fans unsophisticated. How I wish you all could see what flies over your heads. You call yourselves bread & butter. Well, I guess that’s partially accurate — cheap, empty calories.

Did Jay Leno crack into this message board and pose as all of these people? wtf? I’ve never heard so many people hate on Conan. Conan is hilarious. Although he is goofy, his writing is very sophisticated. (the man went to Harvard).. he definately has the witty, self deprecating humor or New York. Jay Leno is stale, washed up with a cocky attitude.

conan>leno
conan is easily way more funny than leno and his safe generic humour that is written for him!
i’m not saying that leno isn’t funny, just that conan is a far more funny and talented writer on his own.

Look at Conan’s ratings…They’re falling faster than Barack Obama’s approval rating. This guy only appeals to the Starbuck’s crowd. Leno is much more talented and seasoned.

I used to tape Late-night shows and watch them during dinner, next night.By fast-forwarding through commercials and lame skits,or guests they became my favorite shows (after The Simpsons).I soon gave up entirely on Letterman ( forced “goofiness” and the lamest monologues on TV).Conan’s opening became extremely annoying after a while, but his comedy bits were hilarious sometimes and his guests were much looser then they were on other shows.People like Tom Hanks or Gwyneth Paltrow said things on Conan that you would never hear anywhere else. But Leno’s comedy batting average is much higher, and his “bits” change frequently. His Tonight Show is almost always entertaining and actually better than Carson’s.Johnny Carson (like Elvis)was irrationally glorified after his death.I will go as far as admitting that Leno may be a jerk but he puts on a good show.

I’m glad Jay’s back. I think he got off to a better start than Conan. I would like to see headlines, jaywalking, etc. earlier in the show, but they’re still good. His monologues improved through the week and are better than Letterman or Conan.

darn it, what was that quote in the mag about Jay Leno and women.

Johnny Carson. Jay Leno. Conan O’Brian. BRASS. Class. Ass. That sums it up pretty good.

Leno Rocks!!! | 11/21/2009, 2:38 pm EST

Manny needs to see a GOOD shrink! If Conan farted,he’d be rolling on the floor. The comment from Dan,I agree with 100%.Jay Leno has earned his strips in being a well seasoned comic. N.B.C. dropped the ball on this one!!! What goes around, comes around.
