Dr. Dre Teases Long-Awaited “Detox” With Dr. Pepper Ad

Dr. Dre’s forthcoming album Detox has been delayed so long and is so eagerly anticipated, it’s starting to earn comparisons to another long-in-the-making project: Guns n’ Roses’ Chinese Democracy. Now the two albums are linked by an unlikely third party, Dr. Pepper. The soda company that famously egged on Axl Rose by offering a free can to everyone in America should Rose’s LP surface in 2008 is now partnering with Dre to offer a sneak peek of Detox in a commercial that will begin airing June 1st, Billboard reports. “Scientific tests prove when you drink Dr. Pepper slow, the 23 flavors taste even better. For me, slow always produces a hit,” Dre says in his version of the “Take Me, I’m A Doctor” ad campaign, which previously featured Kiss’ “Dr. Love,” Gene Simmons.

In the commercial, after taking over the DJ stand, Dre and his can of Dr. Pepper preview a few bars of what is reportedly a song bound for Dre’s Detox, the follow-up to his 1999 album 2001. As Nah Right points out, the beat featured in the ad is from the track “Shit Popped Off,” a previously leaked rumored Detox track and one of the supposed products of Dre’s recent collaboration with T.I.

So will Detox come with the promise of free Dr. Pepper? So far the company hasn’t announced plans to repeat their previous stunt — probably because the last one didn’t go so well — but at least we know now Detox is on the way with a late-2009 release date penciled in and a roster of guests that’s expected to include T.I., Eminem, 50 Cent, Nas and Lil Wayne. This week Dre collaborator Dawaun Parker told us, “Every year that anticipation [for Detox] builds. At this point, people aren’t even sure what they want it to sound like. They want to hear some kind of frequency that doesn’t exist.”

I look forward to hearing Detox when it finally comes out.

The problem is Dre’s production doesn’t seem to have evolved much since 2001 came out. But you can see a huge evolution between Straight Outta Compton to Niggaz4life to The Chronic to The Chronic 2001. He has been in a holding pattern since then.

And I think Dre taking 10 years (or more) between 1999’s 2001 and whenever Detox comes out is a much bigger deal in hip hop than it was when a rock band takes a long time for a follow-up. Hip Hop fans care more about what is current than concentrating on past years highlights. Fortunately Dre is a living legend, so this won’t apply to him as much as it would for another rapper being gone for a decade (which is 100 years in Hip Hop years.)

Marc | 5/29/2009, 11:14 am EST

Hate to say it, but this is the mark of a commercial sell-out. How can Dre have street cred anymore when he does shit like this? Eminem’s no good anymore either, regressing to the high-pitched whiny crap from the Slim Shady LP. The hip-hop world has moved on, and these guys just don’t get it.

Tex | 5/29/2009, 1:18 pm EST

This is a shot to his cred, but money and age will make rappers do strange things. Ice Cube, Ice T, Rev Run, and many other “older” rappers have no street cred left at all. That doesn’t mean they don’t have talent. Nobody know’s what this album is going to sound like so nobody can judge it yet. I’m hoping for some old school bumpin shit mixed with Dre’s grasp on the present day game. Nobody knows besides the people making the art, so stop hating the music before it even drops.

mfingninja | 5/29/2009, 2:09 pm EST

Dre does not need street cred. He is Doctor fucking Dre. Ever heard of N.W.A. Call him a sellout to his face I dare you!

Nick | 5/29/2009, 3:15 pm EST

It’s common knowledge that Dre never had street cred. He admits he was never in a gang because he stayed in his house practicing his DJing skill all of his teenage years.

The only NWA member who was actually a gang member was Eazy-E, who really did sell drugs for The Crips in Compton. Ice Cube was a Straight-A student who was going to college to be an architect , MC Ren was in the military and Yella was like Dre in that he just made music instead of gangbanging.

The most gangsta thing Dre ever did was pull a Chris Brown on TV host Dee Barnes in 1990.

Old | 5/29/2009, 3:27 pm EST

What?! Rappers lie?! NEVER!

Seriously, like Chris Rock once famously said “There is no such thing as gangsta rap because gangstas don’t rap.” Real gang members are dead or in jail before they turn 21. The ones left to rap about it exaggerate their involvement.

cisco | 5/29/2009, 3:57 pm EST

dr. dre is definetley not a sell out
who cares whos gang banging what or whatever
its all about the music
thats what hip hop is music
if you make good music then your a good music maker lol
it dont matter if you were in a gang or not

kidstaysfresh | 5/29/2009, 7:00 pm EST

Song is called “shit popped off” produced by The Buchanan’s sold to dr. dre for detox album.. same dudes who produced “What More Can I Say” on the Black Album and Amerie”s new single “Why R U”

To Nick | 5/29/2009, 8:01 pm EST

Who cares if Dre was never a true gangster? I don’t know any gangsters who can do what Dr. Dre does. Dre has been a musician since birth. He was the main musical direction in the World Class Wreckin’ Cru at the young age of 19 and is a pioneer in electro music. He has masterminded the beats and music for some of the most influential gangster rap albums of all time.

Detox will be a great album and I can’t wait to hear it.

three | 5/30/2009, 3:21 am EST

Personally, a good beat needs no words. Just like `Pac didn’t need a beat. What feels good feels good. I love music! Everything I know the Dr. to be will be put onto this album. It sure would not hurt if he kept the truth in his words and spread a revolutionary message just like the last time!

Please keep up the great work everyone… Together all things are within reach.

Loco | 5/30/2009, 11:43 am EST

If you know anything about him you’d know he doesn’t actually produce anything, he just supervises producers. Daz Dillinger produced a lot of the Death Row music he took credit for (especially Doggystyle), Bud’Da did most of The Aftermath and Mel-Man did most of Chronic 2001.

Just read the credits. He doesn’t write his rhymes either but everybody knows that. All Dre does is basically slap his name-value on a record.

Kia | 5/30/2009, 2:30 pm EST

Nick said ” hip hop fans care more about what is current than concentrating on past years highlights”
Bullshit!!
Have you listened to anything that has come out recently? Hip hop is dead as nas has said.
Old west coast and old east coast is better than anything made in the last few years.

StiGuy | 5/30/2009, 4:35 pm EST

I honestly dont give 2 shits anymore. Its too late to win me over on his new album, he simply just lost a fan. (By the way, “Chineese Democracy” was a piece of shit that wasnt wort waiting for. Fuck Dr.Pepper, Fuck Dr.Dre, and especially fuck Axl Rose for pumping us up for a terrible album.

Bob | 5/30/2009, 8:12 pm EST

I don’t give a shit if he ain’t a real gangsta! Now the world finally knows what he really is – he’s a pepper, bitches!!

Dr. Pepper | 5/30/2009, 8:16 pm EST

Yo DP is the real soda pop of the geto gangsta streets motherfuckers! Dr. Pepper will bust a cap in yo ass you ho!

jsg | 5/31/2009, 12:21 am EST

yawn – another middle-aged millionaire trying to be threatening and relevant.
also: most overrated producer ever.

Dr. Dre is GOD!! | 5/31/2009, 11:42 am EST

Hey jsg – get your head out of your ass. Where have you been the last 20 years? Dre is more relevant than Elvis, John Lennon and Bob Dylan combined. Dr. Pepper is the baddest carbonated beverage you ever tasted. Yo, it’s 2009 – you better get with it or your gonna get left behind.

dude | 5/31/2009, 8:05 pm EST

I don’t care what it sounds like, as long as Lil Wayne, 50 and T.I. aren’t in it that long.

The Truth | 5/31/2009, 10:02 pm EST

Oh. My. God.

Absolutely HILARIOUS.

The definition of sellout. And a complete joke.

The Real Truth | 6/1/2009, 12:09 pm EST

The real truth is that Dre, being the pioneer and innovator that he is, has finally proven once and for that selling out is COOL! The joke is on you if you are hatin’ cuz he sold out. Besides, he’s right when he says “when you drink Dr. Pepper slow, the 23 flavors taste even better.”

Funkmaster Nick | 6/7/2009, 3:22 pm EST

As a long time Hip Hop fanatic and also a musician who grew up on a open-minded (East & West Coast 90s Rap), then came to love G-Funk (94 until its end with Dre’s 2001),
I can say I’ve heard the Leaked Tracks, Shit Popped Off is as hot as you thought, Dre’s definitely still the Master. Like Quincy Jones, he only produces Quality material. Ever wonder why Michael Jackson never sounded Good without Q? Because, just like THRILLER, Dre’s 2001 to me has been he best sounding Hip Hop album. Nothing good since, besides maybe OutKast and Nas, and a FEW OTHERS come close to the Quality Production Dre creates. Believe ME, DETOX will bring back Classic Hip Hop because once it comes out, it will be the Blueprint for a new sound in Hip-Hop, and hopefully a new era. True that, Peace.

Funkmaster Nick | 6/7/2009, 3:40 pm EST

(Continued)…
Bottom Line is, Michael Jackson’s
so called ‘comeback attempt’ this year will be nothing compared to the Hip Hop Masterpiece Dr. Dre is almost ready to unveil. Think about the best R&B Albums, THRILLER, WHAT’S GOING ON, PURPLE RAIN, SONGS IN THE KEY OF LIFE…
Now remember the best Hip Hop albums,
IT TAKES A NATION OF MILLIONS…,
3 FEET HIGH & RISING, STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON, THE CHRONIC, ENTER THE WU-TANG (36 CHAMBERS)…

In my opinion there’s only been really a SELECT FEW ALBUMS since 1999/2000 that we can call Classic.
Outkast’s SPEAKERBOXX/THE LOVE BELOW is by far the best HIP HOP joint we’ve had, it was like Prince, Jimi Hendrix, Sly Stone, Dr. Dre, Ice-T, & George Clinton had a Jam sesssion.
YOU GUYS KNOW Dre’s 2001 was the best sounding West Coast album of the decade so far, even it came out in late 1999.
Maybe Nas, The Game, 50 Cent, and Eminiem made culturally rich in terms of MCing Hip Hop albums,
and Dre did a lot of great producing, even on Gwen Stefani’s Solo album. But, as far as WEST COAST PIONEERS, Warren G planned a record for FEB. this year that never saw light of day, DJ Quik is now a new man, and made an album with KURUPT, they’re a new duo team. Snooop is- well, Snoop and also the Newcombers are kicking up dust. Eminem has poised us for the Shady comeback, 50 Cent is doing I don’t know what -Reality Shows, and The Game is planning a new album. SO, everything’s set. DETOX will no doubt be the Best Album of the year. Anticipation is a bitch.
We’re all ready for a CHANGE in Music right now, and DRE’s album will sound trimphant and we’ll be all celebrating DRE DAY again!

Nick "The Tard" | 6/16/2009, 2:49 am EST

Yo bro, you need to get your facts straight and read Dre’s autobiography. You are a doosh and should have wear your handicap helmet the next time you use a computer.

Jason | 6/16/2009, 5:25 pm EST

I wouldn’t be so sure about that Funkmaster Nick all you guys do is underestimate MJ’s influence and power.

Poppinthangs | 6/18/2009, 12:53 am EST

It’s a coincident that Dre is doing a collabo with Dr Pepper because I remember on The Chronic at the end of one of his songs his Mentions “Pepper soda and all that shit” and now 17yrs later he’s doing a commerical with Dr Pepper.

westcoastin | 6/21/2009, 12:47 am EST

man i hope the detox is not full of down south colabos. Dont get me wrong i like the south. but this is album should be strictley west coast artist just like his others. dre would be a damn sellout if that happened.

Setting things straight | 6/23/2009, 10:32 am EST

Just for the record, 2001 was not all west coast, he had Devin the Dude on one of his tracks and besides the Game, who would he get from the west coast that was any good. Also, Eminem didn’t discover 50 Cent, he just signed him to Shady Records, 50 was already an established artist, especially in the East Coast. Finally, even if he has other producers help and he just oversees, you have to give him credit, he knows how to use the talent around him. I would call that genuis.

mike | 6/28/2009, 9:34 pm EST

2001 was entirely west coast theme you fucking idiots…what was still dre…them riding around in lowriders and smoking blunts…snoop says” HITTIN THEM CORNERS IN THEM LOW LOWS GIRL” not to mention the guest appearances…which include snoop dogg..nate dogg..mc ren…hitman…and xzibit…all west coast rappers…

brabaz | 7/4/2009, 3:21 am EST

dr said his just waiting till eminems album is released and shown off, then he’ll release his

tellindatruth | 7/15/2009, 7:56 am EST

Dr Dre is always billed as one of the realest but have you ever seen him with the wreckin cru?wearing lipstick with tight clothes on,and in 1988 he said he dosent smoke weed cause it gives you brain damage,4 years later he makes the chronic and hes suddenly an og smokin weed talkin about what he done back in the day. There was no back in the day for this nigga, and how much did he sell out with this advert?its like that bit in waynes world when they make fun of corporate adverts n shit.FUCK DRE,and dont call me a hater i just like 2 keep it real fuck all you dre dickriders

Anonymous | 8/8/2009, 5:00 pm EST

Little wayne and ti are garbage!! pac and big!! what happened to good hip hop??…hip hop is dead

TWSK | 8/25/2009, 11:23 pm EST

What Dre Really Needs To Do Is Concentrate On The Album and Stay Away From Bitches Like T.I., Lil’ Wayne and Flo Rida. As For Street Credibility, Eazy-E Basically Owned Dre’s Ass In ‘93 So There Really Isn’t Much To Say About Dre Being A “G”. He Needs People Like Snoop, Cube, Game, Daz, Eminem, Kurupt & 50 Cent To Make Guest Appearances Instead Of Some Of The Lame-Ass “Biters” Of This Era. Detox Might Be A Little Over-Anticipated, but It Could Possibly Be The Best Album Of The Decade. Peace…

blown1 | 8/27/2009, 12:46 am EST

all i know is wayne would fuck this album up for me t.i.isn’t that bad But i wouldn’t prefer him and rap is trash nowadays i only stick with the classics
