Kanye West Nixes Auto-Tune on Jay-Z’s “Blueprint 3,” Talks Book

With Jay-Z’s Blueprint 3 officially no longer Island Def Jam property since the MC bought out his old contract, the album’s producer Kanye West gave MTV an update on Jigga’s anticipated LP. “Jay is in control of everything in his domain,” Kanye said. “He’s just been working on it, and it’s gonna be amazing when he drops it.” West didn’t say if early songs from the album, like the Grammy-winning “Swagga Like Us” (which ended up on T.I.’s Paper Trail) and “Jockin’ Jay-Z,” would wind up on the final track list, but did add that the duo have made some changes to the album since they began recording the disc last year.

One of the changes — a positive or a negative depending on how you feel about West’s own 808s & Heartbreak — is that all Auto-Tune-enhanced vocals have been removed from the album. “We actually removed all the songs with Auto-Tune off of his album to make the point that this is an anti-Auto-Tune album, even though I released an album that has all Auto-Tune!,” West told MTV. “It doesn’t matter to me. It’s music; it’s just sonics.”

Kanye made the Blueprint 3 remarks while on a promotional tour for his advice book Thank You and You’re Welcome. Kanye had some more interesting comments to impart, this time to Reuters, admitting during the book tour that he doesn’t actually read and takes pride in being non-literary. “Sometimes people write novels and they just be so wordy and so self-absorbed,” West said. “I am not a fan of books. I would never want a book’s autograph. I am a proud non-reader of books. I like to get information from doing stuff like actually talking to people and living real life.”

Kanye’s Thank You, what he calls “a collection of thoughts and theories,” is a mere 52 pages long and features pearls of wisdom like “I hate the word hate!” and his personal favorite, “Get used to being used.”

Kanye West doesn’t read. That makes a lot of sense now.

Chuck | 5/27/2009, 10:53 am EST

Doesn’t or can’t? That is the question.

Anonymous | 5/27/2009, 11:48 am EST

If anyone needed legitimate proof that this guy is an idiot, these comments say it all. Now we know that he can’t read or sing.

Kevin the Robot | 5/27/2009, 12:04 pm EST

Auto-tuning is this era’s drum machine. Rap has hit its disco period. We need Celine Dion to come out with a big auto-tune hit, so we can kill this fad once and for all.

I just want Blueprint3

thegreatboges | 5/27/2009, 12:28 pm EST

kanye, you don’t get it. it’s not about being “anti-auto tune” it’s just about not using it on every single song. No effect has a place in every song. Only those that it feels divine and fitting should be used.

Anonymous | 5/27/2009, 12:41 pm EST

If auto-tune is used occasionally by a real singer, to achieve a special ’sonic effect’, then I have no problem with it.

If auto-tune is used solely to correct pitch by people who have no business singing…. then it’s sad.

Frances The Mute | 5/27/2009, 6:17 pm EST

Not a huge Jay-Z or Kanye fan, but I give them mad props for dropping the Auto-Tune….that shit just sucks. My fear is that OutKast’s next album will have some lame Auto-Tune on it…or even The Roots. That would suck balls! (It’s definitely not either of their styles, but you know, Auto-Tune is the popular thing these days.)

Black Hole Sun | 5/27/2009, 6:31 pm EST

Ditto Anonymous. For someone who constantly touts himself as being the most innovative artist ever, it’s pretty pathetic to see that he has to use special effects to make it sound like he can sing. He claims that he wants to be Elvis, but Elvis’ talent was genuine.

hahah | 5/27/2009, 7:52 pm EST

Kanye West doesnt read because he doesnt know how to!

L2thaK | 5/27/2009, 9:39 pm EST

I would like a copy of Kanye West’s book so I could take a big shit on it.

Amalia | 5/27/2009, 10:36 pm EST

Kanye West is a serious douche-bag. “I am a non-reader”… way to be a role model for high school students, idiot. How dare you play an “anti-drop-out” benefit concert with IGNORANT, DESTRUCTIVE statements like this?? Hypocrite!!!

Anon | 5/28/2009, 1:01 am EST

“I would never want a book’s autograph.”

Is this guy disabled?

dude | 5/28/2009, 1:15 am EST

Is he retarded? Going on a book tour to promote a book about yourself and then saying half-cocked things like “I would never want a book’s autograph.” I don’t like books, they’re too hard to read…they’re soo self-absorbed…?
speak for yourself douche.

Kanye West | 5/28/2009, 1:25 am EST

All of your comments don’t affect me in anyway. So what if the songs in my latest album only have auto tunes. Plus I don’t really care because I got more money then what you get paid weekly.

Kanye West | 5/28/2009, 8:09 am EST

Just ya’ll wait, this is all part of my plan, I am going to change the book game like I changed the rap game. My next book is going to be like a throw back to choose your own adventures, but I am afraid that you are not as smart as me so it is going to be Kanye choose your adventure for you books.

The Prof | 5/28/2009, 9:37 am EST

I love people who brag about not reading. Very amusing. What a moron.

Jimmy | 5/28/2009, 10:03 am EST

What is he, a gay fish?

T-Dizzle | 5/28/2009, 11:04 am EST

it’s a pretty sad state of affairs when an artist who has a huge impact on people (whether i like them or not) says “i’m a proud non-reader of books”.” He didn’t call it the College Dropout for nothin’. Now we can look forward to our illiteracy rate jumping up a bit as we strive to achieve our goals as the free world’s most uneducated in the world! If Kanye was really that good and the music spoke for itself, he wouldn’t even need to justify his own ego and talk about how great he is in every interview. He’s like a modern madonna, but madonna has a bigger penis and a deeper voice.

kanye..you're my hero | 5/28/2009, 2:07 pm EST

that’s right…you tell em!!! Your music and flow is dope, period.
You don’t need anyone’s approval, you’re a star…you do what you do. Everyone’s hating, yet they find the time to read every article on you and post long, thought out comments…
so Kanye, if you want to be a singer, turn the auto tune on, if you want to be an author, write 52 sentences on 52 pages…go right ahead

hey yeezy, do you like fish sticks in your mouth?

Jonah | 5/28/2009, 2:37 pm EST

So Kanye doesn’t read, he can’t sing, and he likes to put fish dicks in his mouth?… yeah, sounds like a guy I want an advice book from.

Jonah | 5/28/2009, 2:41 pm EST

So, what Kanye is saying is, don’t buy my book because, cool people don’t read. And don’t come to my autograph sessions because it’s stupid to get an autograph from a book author… not that I needed another reason to not give a crap about a book written by Kanye, but I hope his words inspire millions to never buy his book or try to get it autographed.

Jonah | 5/28/2009, 2:46 pm EST

Auto-tune is not a style… auto tune is just what it’s name implies: an effect to make someone who cannot sing on tune sound a little closer to on tune. But it really sounds nothing at all like singing. If Kanye wants to impress anyone with his singing, he is going to have to learn to sing for real… but then again, that may require him to READ some sheet music.

thedetoxg | 5/28/2009, 2:56 pm EST

kanye west is terrible as a rapper, auto tune singer, and producer so idk why jay z picked him as producer for blueprint 3. he is ignorant and thinks he is top dogg buttt naaaaaa!!!!!

Kvader | 5/28/2009, 3:03 pm EST

Kanye West def cannot read, couldn’t you tell by his use of improper grammar? Ignorance is bliss, especially for Mr. West

Cher | 5/28/2009, 3:59 pm EST

Sorry, Kanye and T-Pain. Using auto-tune is not being innovative. After all, I used it in one of her songs more than a decade ago.

I like the fact that Kanye’s book is only 52 pages. Let me guess, he wrote/dictated one “witty” sentence a week and at the end of the year he had a book? The book should be called Chicken Soup from Kanye’s Soul.

Yuri | 5/28/2009, 4:25 pm EST

Kanye admits that he’s an illiterate fool and is encouraging the youth of today to NOT READ BOOKS. He’s an idiot. I’m done with him.

Yuri | 5/28/2009, 4:25 pm EST

Can he get any dumber? | 5/28/2009, 6:29 pm EST

Wow. A black male rapper who says that he doesn’t like to read. Now when someone in the press treats him like the idiot that he is, he’s gonna cry racism. He’s the one that is perpetuating the negative stereotype about African-Americans; that they’re uneducated, they’re lazy and arrogant. And what makes this even sadder, is that he’s the son of a college professor and he grew up in an upper-middle class neighborhood. He’s not from the projects. I’d expect 50 Cent to say this, not Kanye. I’m pretty sure the only reason he got into college in the first place was because of his mom, since he clearly lacks brains. And he dares to call himself “the voice of this generation”? Yeah, cause that’s exactly what this generation needs, a pompous, illiterate fool to look up to. You set a great example for the kids out there, Kanye. “Don’t get an education! Just become a rapper and you’ll be rich like me!”. Unbelievable.

I just started reading Dick Gregory’s autobiography, here’s a guy who came from nothing, to a comedian, to a civil rights activist and realized the power of influence when the spotlight is on you. I wonder how he feels when he hears members of his own race say things like “I’m a proud non-reader”. I wonder how he feels when celebrities say such nonsense and gives the message to society that it’s ok to be ignorant. These last 8 years of George Bush (another proud non-reader) are going to happen again if people look up to idolization of illiteracy and not work at fixing the problem. We should demand more of our celebrities, athletes, politicians, etc. if Kanye needs an incentive to pick up a book and start reading, maybe you should consider that the more you read the more you wouldn’t need to hire ghostwriters to write your rhymes for you.

Kanye wants to be like Elvis? so black artists now want to be white artists who ripped off black artists? yep, Nas is right. Hip Hop is dead.

kayne | 5/29/2009, 8:04 am EST

simply a jackass

Anonymous | 5/29/2009, 5:05 pm EST

Y’know, he never said he can’t read or that reading is BAD. Maybe your the ones who can’t read correctly? Or are you just too obsessed with hatred to have any common sense? It’s ok to criticise but when you start overlooking facts just because you have some pathetic vendetta against a celebrity, you start looking silly.

Self-righteous idiots.

Spike | 5/29/2009, 5:31 pm EST

“West, a college dropout, said being a non-reader was helpful when he wrote his book because it gave him “a childlike purity.”

Translation: This book was written for the mentally challenged by the mentally challenged.

For someone who dissed George Bush, he’s proven to be just as dumb as he is.

Audio Engineer | 5/30/2009, 4:27 am EST

I was at Bonnaroo last year and witnessed Kanye’s massive ego firsthand. All I can say is FUCK KANYE !!

When will this guy go away?

RS….PLEASE stop giving him press !! If kanye is SO influential and he doesn’t read, do you think his fans are reading Rolling Stone? No more press for Kanye; let him be a DJ in a seedy Holiday Inn lounge in Newark…..

Joe | 6/1/2009, 9:56 am EST

jay-z is a legend. he’s changed the game, shit, he is the fuckin game!

You can judge him all you want for what he says about books or this and that-he is still dope-he is Kanye, he has been responsible for numerous platinum records-what have you done lately? I think his work speaks for him and most haters–really just hate that they are not the one everyone is talking about.

Jay-Z is a hip-pop-clown plus looks stupid in those suits (want to play the business guy too much…he wouldn’t stand a chance in the real busisness world). The lyrics on his DOA song are wack (the beats fine).

Anonymous | 6/18/2009, 11:16 pm EST

Auto-Tune wasn’t created to sound similar to a talk-box, or a vocoder-like sound, it was created to CORRECT pitch. If something was maybe 3 cents flat or sharp, you could easily fix that and you would still sound like a human. The same with guitar and bass. Auto-Tune is pitch correction. Now, when people discovered that adjusting the formant and re-tune speed to 0, is when they discovered that “Auto-Tune or now sadly, T-Pain effect”. (I hate when people say the T-Pain effect. It’s not like hes the first.) Anyways… people that hate on Auto-Tune just need to grow up. You still need to have some talent of singing to make that “T-Pain” effect still sound good. There are plenty of vocalists out there who can’t sing worth crap and Auto-Tune makes them sound worse. But there are others who don’t sound bad with it. It’s just a tool. Sure it is overused but Jay Z is taking this too far. Auto-Tune is dead? Nope. It’s actually just begun. Listen to the hardcore bands out there who are using it. It’s making them famous and rich. I don’t mind it. I think it is actually kind of fun messing with it. Oh, and Kayne West is a dumbass. Wow…. haha.

saasha | 6/29/2009, 12:18 am EST

Kanye,

I think your outlook is a little harsh! What about your fans? I think it’d be great for you to learn to read – regardless of how much money you make! Use your powers for good!!!

daddy warbucks | 6/29/2009, 7:35 pm EST

How in the fuck can u call sum1 stupid bcause they don’t like 2 read? I would think if u don’t like music why would u listen 2 it! If u don’t like kanye´s comments fuck it don’t follow it up!

justin | 7/14/2009, 12:44 am EST

Kanye doesnt like to read, so what!! Why would you do something you dont like to do..what you probably dont know is that this so called “gay fish” produced alot of the hits you fools are listening to on the radio or the songs you put on your ipod you people that call him ingnorant are just ingnorant yourselves i mean einstein flunked out of school twice so what!!! Look at him and how brilliant he was.kanye is a genius with an innovative mind and he is not afraid to be different from average mcs and speaking about what he goes through in his life not make up stuff like alot of them do today…and those of you hating on jay z he is the greatest rapper alive (sorry lil wayn) he has been ever since biggie died because jigga keeps raising the bar album after album..the ingnorance of some people!!!o well

Chethan | 8/18/2009, 2:37 pm EST

The fact that he’s proud of not reading makes him stupid. Not that he doesn’t read. That is nothing to be proud of especially in our intellectually inept society. So what he want authors to dumb themselves down so they don’t seem “self absorbed”? Sounds like he just doesn’t want to put forth the effort involved in thinking. And what the hell does “he would never want a books autograph” mean? Is everything about fame to him? You’re a great role model Kanye.

SNooPY | 8/19/2009, 2:14 am EST

He’s an ass at times so what, life goes on, and yall are still haterz, get a life!!!!
