T.I. said a temporary goodbye to friends and family at a farewell concert this weekend. Tip, who’s expected to report to prison today, performed at his native Atlanta’s Phillips Arena to a sellout crowd of 16,000, CNN reports. “T.I.’s Final Goodbye Bash,” as the concert was dubbed, featured a set list stocked with many of the rapper’s biggest hits, including “Whatever You Like” and “Swagga Like Us.” The performance also included appearances by Soulja Boy and Tip’s five children, who came onstage with their mother. “I’m doing the best I can to get out there, man, and put something positive on these young kids, man,” T.I. said. “I try my best. I need y’all help, though.”

As part of his plea bargain, T.I., born Clifford Harris, has spent the last year visiting schools and youth groups warning about the dangers of violence. T.I. was sentenced to a 366-day prison sentence stemming from an October 2007 incident when the rapper had his bodyguard purchase $12,000 worth of weapons. Due to a prior conviction on felony drug charges in 1998, Tip was not permitted to own firearms.

Under the plea bargain, T.I. was also held under house arrest and ordered to pay a $100,000 fine. During that time, T.I. recorded his latest LP, Paper Trail. The rapper is scheduled to begin his 366-day jail term today, May 26th, but the rapper’s time behind bars will reportedly be reduced to credit the days T.I. spent under house arrest. Last week, Rock Daily reported that T.I.’s lawyers filed an appeal to have the rapper’s prison term moved from the Forrest City Federal Correctional Complex in Arkansas to a minimum security facility closer to Atlanta.

“I’m doing the best I can to get out there, man, and put something positive on these young kids, man…”

Nothing says “positivity” like $12K in firearms. Nothing but “positive” things can come from that, right? Nothing “positive” has come from hip-hop since the mid 90s. Hope TI brings his a plug to cork his butt in the slammer.

i agree NYC Nate. thats pretty condradictory for him to talk to kids about violence when he purchased weapons.

“positive” is being accountable for your actions, which is what he’s trying to do. Everyone does something wrong. It’s how you deal with those things that make you the person you are.

Also, it’s not contradictory to talk about violence AND purchase weapons. There’s nothing inherently wrong with wanting to protect yourself, or your family, with firearms.

I give T.I. big props. He is man enough to admit what he did was srong and take responsibility for it. He is using his own wrong doings to change the minds of the kids of the future. There are some places people live and grown where what he did is all they know. Don’t judge someone from the ghetto or the streets if you have lived in the subs and house all your life, there are people that struggle. T.I. IS AND FOREVER WILL BE THE KING!!!!!!!!!!!

You’re making it sound like he bought the weapons AFTER he said he wants to be a positive influence. He made a mistake and he’s paying for it. He is truly sorry for what he did, and you should also know that his reasons for carrying firearms was for his own security. His best friend Philant Johnson was shot dead right in front of him, and the bullet was meant for T.I. He wasn’t trying to be “gangsta”, he was just fearful for his safety and made a a lapse in judgment in deciding how he would protect himself. No different than the Bible-thumping, right-wing nuts who fight gun control tooth and nail, using that very excuse of wanting to protect themselves, along with the right to practice their favorite hobby, hunting. But it’s hip hop that is the sole reason for gun violence, right? Never mind that the reason some kids have such easy access to guns is because their parents have them in the house .

Mabey prison will help his rhymes. his songs have gotten soft.

T.I . Hater | 5/26/2009, 7:03 pm EST

Hey “think on my own”-

I’m sure “protecting himself” wasn’t on his mind when he bought MACHINE GUNS. People don’t spend 12 grand trying to “protect” themselves.

Derik | 5/27/2009, 12:24 am EST

I really doubt that prison will inspire a great next album from him. I expected something big from Paper Trails considering he had learned of his sentencing when working on Paper Trails, but it just ended up being terrible.

think on my own | 5/27/2009, 10:33 am EST

T.I. Hater, how do you know what was on his mind?

There are lots of people in the US that own fully automatic weapons legally. You just need a special license. If you have the money, the license isn’t hard to get.

Again, TI’s downfall was that he couldn’t own “any” gun legally because of his felony conviction. He’s now paying the price for that.

But, don’t pretend to know what was on his mind because he was buying fully automatic weapons. Your presumptions mean nothing.

He did wrong, and is now paying the price. Simple.

HAHAHAHAHA!! A pre-prison concert! I bet he’ll “t.i.” in jail ;)

You all are morons | 5/27/2009, 5:46 pm EST

All you hating on t.i. are you serious? His best friend was killed in front of him. The car he was in was shot at 9 times, he watched his best friend die in front of him. You trying to tell me you wouldnt buy some protection if you went through that? He did something stupid, but admitted it, and spent 1,000 hours of community service, and if you didn’t notice, had a show on mtv where he went and helped 5 kids who needed to get directed towards the right path. He fucked up, he knows it, and has already spent a year and a half dealing with the consequences. If you are all telling me house arrerst isn’t bad, you’ve never had to do it. T.I. is a hero in my mind. Most rappers would have never helped kids out, they would just say they’re innocent and let their lawyers win the case for them. Props to t.i. for everything he has done
