Just days before Phish embark on their reunion tour, the quartet are releasing a new track titled “Time Turns Elastic,” their first fresh studio recording since their five-year hiatus. If the title sounds familiar, it’s because the track began as a collaboration between singer-guitarist Trey Anastasio and composer Don Hart, and a classical version of the suite debuted with the Orchestra Nashville in September 2008 and was performed in Baltimore last week. The Phish rendition hits iTunes today, while Trey’s studio version of Time Turns Elastic — along with his original demo — will be released on June 9th, 2009. Today’s iTunes release clocks in at 13 minutes and 29 seconds and features all four members of Phish; the track will appear on the band’s new album, due out July 28th, the band announced in a press release.

“I began writing this little tune for Phish — and it just kept growing and growing,” Anastasio said in the release. A video posted on the Phish site features footage of the band performing the track in the studio. The song is also streaming in its long entirety over at Phish’s MySpace page. Even before the announcement video, however, the track was found on iTunes by eagle-eyed Phans hours, according to Glide Magazine.

For their new album, the band’s first since 2004’s Undermind, Phish is working in a New York City studio with producer Steve Lillywhite, who oversaw the band’s 1996 disc Billy Breathes. The band’s own JEMP Records will release the still-untitled album on July 28th. Following Phish’s three-night stand at Virginia’s Hampton Arena in March (which also featured a new song called “Backwards Down the Number Line”), the band officially embarks on their reunion tour starting May 31st with a performance at Boston’s storied Fenway Park. From there, Phish will headline two nights at Bonnaroo and four nights at Colorado’s Red Rocks.

they dont need to make new records.

Anony | 5/26/2009, 5:56 pm EST

But you need to use punctuation.

Denton | 5/26/2009, 7:41 pm EST

Darren, as artists who care about their craft and who care about creating art, yes-yes they DO need to make new records.

If you want to be a phake phan, then don’t buy them or support them.

Anonymous | 5/26/2009, 7:56 pm EST

This song is god awful.

Dr.Gonzo | 5/26/2009, 9:00 pm EST

This song is not god awful. I think this song would be great live, and is great in the studio version.
P.S. YES they do need to make new records.

Septimius Severus | 5/26/2009, 10:12 pm EST

Wow.
That was AWFUL.

louis | 5/27/2009, 2:22 am EST

This song makes me smile when i hear it.

Klyde | 5/27/2009, 2:57 am EST

The song makes me crack a smile when i hear it too. Phish is about to do incredible things in 2009. Thinking about hampton i cant help but smile… Summer tour has been the only thing on my mind ever since. Im a yankee fan and im still exited to see phish at fenway park. Im seein them 17 times, tickets are cheap on stubhub. I think the highlite of the tour will be knoxville and bonnaroo.

Same old Sh%t | 5/27/2009, 7:05 am EST

Yeah. I’m pretty much expecting the mainstream morons out there to shit all over this song. And if they are, they have no patience and flat-out don’t get it. Fact of the matter is, this is the best material the band has come up with in YEARS, not including the 5-year breather. I was honestly taken back by this. Brilliant work.

Severus Snape | 5/27/2009, 8:47 am EST

My mommy likes them.

Dan | 5/27/2009, 12:59 pm EST

What a pile of tripe. Phish has all sorts of epic pieces they’ll probably never play again, and in it’s place we get Trey’s bleeding-heart solo material concentrated into 13 minutes. The Fluffhead opener at Hampton shows they’ll never play that again, the once-again flubbed YEM was an embarassment, and they can’t play Hood worth shit. This song sends the message that anyone looking to see their first Phish show this summer should just hang it up here. You’re not going to hear a great show, and the hostile fanbase is not going to welcome you. I’m doing you a favor, listen to what I’m saying.

Ryan | 5/27/2009, 1:17 pm EST

LOL@ Dan…
just another bitter soul on the internet. good luck telling phish fans not to see their shows, your talking to the wrong crowd.

Ryan | 5/27/2009, 1:19 pm EST

And by the way, give them a BREAK dan…those were the first shows they’ve played in 5 years, the fluffhead was great. So what if they flubbed hood (the yem was intentional, you noob). First hood in years, you can’t expect it all to be spot on. They sounded great for the rest of the shows.

Billy | 5/27/2009, 1:40 pm EST

Anony – pointing out someone’s lack of proper punctuation on a message board is the lamest thing I can think of.

Dan – The “hostile fan base” you’re referring to is yourself … someone who is quick to critique and point out the “flubs” in songs. Most people just go to the show to enjoy the music and have fun, and that’s what it has always been about.

To everyone who’s attending any of these shows this summer – have a great time.

PD | 5/27/2009, 3:05 pm EST

Trey could shit on a microphone and you’d call it brilliant. Face the fact that the song is bad. It’s nothing more than one man’s self indulgent trash. They haven’t released anything worth a damn in 11 or 12 years. It’s not going to change now.

Horse | 5/27/2009, 3:18 pm EST

Nothing good can come of this.

Dans a deush | 5/27/2009, 3:19 pm EST

Anyone talkin shit about hampton obviously wasnt there. Dan u are a moron, hampton was lifechanging…Summer tour will be aswell. Listen to what im saying.

andrew | 5/27/2009, 3:25 pm EST

this song will be better live. I was hoping for more though from a 13 minute song. Will Trey ever bring back the atonal fuges, the counterpoint and his compositional genius of 89-91? This is even’t close. Still not bad though. Anyone notice trey’s old tone? You can hear his old Mesa which he will switch back to this summer. Finally!!

shesmysister | 5/27/2009, 3:31 pm EST

Dan your a pVssy

scarface | 5/27/2009, 7:40 pm EST

I believe him yo. I dont know why but i do. Yea im not gonna see Phish this summer, because Dan says Hampton was lame. Yea im gonna listen to Dan instead of the thousands of people that went to the shows, and loved them.

Patrick | 5/27/2009, 9:09 pm EST

I’ll tell you this, after the abismal performance I saw at Coventry (what, maybe 3 good tunes from the whole muddy weekend?) this 100 plus show vet is very happy to hear what has been dropped by our boys from VT. It is what it is. Enjoy the shows. Can’t wait for Fenway…

RS think bands takeplural verb | 5/28/2009, 1:21 pm EST

“Phish is working in a New York City studio…”

“The quartet are releasing a new track…”

The quartet are? Neat! Phish do

Anonymous | 5/28/2009, 7:59 pm EST

When will you people learn that phish is constantly evolving? You’re not going to hear what you heard in the nineties ever again. But the new stuff is fantastic. Time turns elastic is a masterpiece.

MotTheWot | 5/29/2009, 8:58 pm EST

I have never heard of Phish, who the hell are they? None of their records are available in OZ and yet they are regarded as some sort of rock gods in the states? Who are they? what do they do? Is it Marillion? they were awful too? Somebody tell me!!

If i was u id move | 5/30/2009, 10:10 pm EST

MottheWot, Yea man your totally missing out, im about to see them 17 times this summer starting tommorow. Im freaking out!!! its gonna be Epic. Its hard to judge this band by there studio efforts. They dont make any hit songs for the radio or Tv. Phish became so big only because there Live performances are so intense and energetic. Its an incredible experience, like no other. Its a shame You will probabably never get a chance to witness it, unless you come to the northeast.

If i was u id move | 5/30/2009, 10:43 pm EST

Marillon manson? not even close

TheDosesKeepMeDancing | 5/31/2009, 1:27 am EST

I actually like this song and can not say that about much of there music written in their recent albums. I will be at Fenway tom. and would not mind hearing this song, but I want a Carini opener. As far as anyone hating, just stop going to shows and b*tchin on the forums because no one cares if Phish is not as tight as the 1993 tour. We just feel lucky to hear Phish rock put once again live.

Craig | 5/31/2009, 1:41 pm EST

This song in my opinion is amazing, a very well put together composition that sounds like Phish in their earliest recordings and in the tune Guyute that was a similar song in terms of pieces.

Anyone who has any negative things to say about this reunion tour, the “tightness” of the act, and the overall decision making of the band to come back, needs to think a bit. In this economy, and this global environment which is full of so much negative stimulation, Phish is a positive and fun influence that allows people to just have fun and see the lost act of improvisational music.

Phish is one of the most progressive music acts over the last 30 years and continues to explore new paths. I for one cant go to too many shows anymore but I will be attending three and cant friggen wait!

Enjoy the shows everyone

Same 4 guys.
Same ambitious song-writing.
Same feeling.
Same beautiful music,
-new verse.
Love it all-
-Appreciate!

bryan | 7/3/2009, 3:47 am EST

this album seems like its going to be the best they’ve put out since farmhouse, maybe even better than fh and bb!

tte, stealing time, ocelot, kdf

can’t f*ckin’ wait

Mulcahey | 8/4/2009, 8:08 pm EST

Anybody who is splitting open and melting over people dissing phish and trey are waisting time on a faulty plan. These comments are clearly accouted for by ignorance and a little to much bathtub gin. Phish is hands down the greatest act and more importantly the greatest following around today as of their reunion this year. For all you true phans reading these disheartening jabs, sit back, put on some phish, and you enjoy myself friends

B Schoff | 8/25/2009, 4:41 pm EST

It will definately be better than Farmhouse…that takes no effort
