It’s damn nigh impossible to write off Linkin Park as nu-metal retreads. They have a catchy hybrid of pop, rock, metal, and hiphop that is extremely popular. If I have an issue with them it would be underdeveloped lyrics. Live, they are very very good.

Not a Linkin Park fan but I love the comparison of most popular music to junk food. Contrary to some people on here I don’t think music quality has as much to do with structure (verse chorus verse) as it does with what I call the ‘x’ factor. Both shitty and great songs come in all forms; some are linear while others are less conventional. What great songs have in common, whether conventional or complicated, is that they make you feel something. You want to dance, cry, laugh, reflect or kick the snot out of someone. Although that can be done in a multitude of ways, it’s just not as present in today’s popular music. I see teenagers wearing Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Jimmy Eat World, AC/DC, Led Zep T Shirts all the time but I don’t see too many Limp Bizkit ones from a few years ago. I highly doubt we’ll be seeing Miley Cyrus and Avril Lavigne T Shirts in 20 years just as we don’t hear shit about Ashley Simpson (thank god) anyomre and yet she was massive a few years ago. Great music comes down to that ‘x’ factor that makes people feel something they can’t describe and it is rarely confined to a generation which is why the Beatles get millions of new fans with every generation and the Jonas Brothers won’t be.

everyone can bag on linkin park all they want, but i respect them because they write music to whats right to them, and not to what their fans would expect from their records. im a HUGE linkin park fan, and when i first heard minutes to midnight, i was kinda confused and a little upset. but the more i listened to it, it became one of my fav albums. the question is, are they changing how music is today? no, i dont really think so. i believe that they write what they feel and try to put it in a way that feels right to them.

To everyone that says they’re awesome live, I gave the live show a chance, and it was terrible. I saw them right when their first album came out and they sucked. Then I saw them on the Summer Sanitarium tour and they were just as bad. That just goes to show that a big budget stage show doesn’t make you good if you don’t have the songs in the first place.

I think LP is doing the best they can to find their place in the music world, just like many other musicians. They are still searching, and that is good. They obviously spend a ton of money on their productions which really helps with the presentation, but not the creativity. I have never seen them live ,but, their recordings seam to have alot of energy and presence.I’ve listened to several of their comps I thought were very good. ,but its all a matter of personal taste anyway. There was a point when they were a fairly fresh new genre, but that was Hybrid Theory. They then recycled that on Meteora. They came out with garbage with Minutes to Midnight and I am sure that they will recycle that as well.

Shinoda made me laugh… thus far all of LP’s records have been the definition of junk. I used to absolutely love Hybrid theory, thing about it was I was in eighth grade when that record came out.

Turns out, as puberty wears on, cheap rhymes about depression and how much you hate someone or why you’d rather just die pretty much lose their edge. Then, when you pick up a guitar for the first time and realize that within 3 weeks you’re better than their entire band…. yeah, Linkin Park kinda lost it’s luster pretty quick.

Even though sales and fan base are not the best measure of music quality, those are certainly measure of popularity. So, if it’s not for the music what makes them that popular? They are not in tabloids or on red carpets(actually very little is known about their personal lives and they are hating media attention). They are not partying, doing drugs or drunk driving. They are not politically active. They are not that good looking or young to impress teenage fans. They are just normal family guys. Their charity work is almost unknown in the mainstream public, because they are quiet and humble. SO IF IT’S ALL THIS WAY(and it is), IT MUST BE THAT THEY ARE MOSTLY POPULAR FOR THEIR MUSIC!!!

And calling LP numetal is out of place totally. They have so differentiated music and so many styles that they cannot be placed in any category. If someone thinks that Limp Bizkit and LP could go into the same genre, that person has not heard more that 4 songs of each group(which then disqualifies them from making valid comments).

For those, who think that LP has simple music: Guys, if you’re so gifted, just try to make one simple album with simple lyrics,

LP is unique.
And Chester’s voice is incredible!
No one has such beautiful, melodic timbre of voice. His voice has changed from 2004 to nowadays (I think it is result of mad screaming (or, maybe, smoking or having too many live performances) and I don’t like this fact. But he still has the best voice!
I’m waiting for his “Dead by sunrise” album as impatiently as new LP album!

I like Linkin Park, but New Divide sounds conspicuously similar to What I’ve Done… don’t get me wrong, I like the stylistic direction those songs are going in, but if they’re goal is to make each song sound like no song they’ve ever made before, I hope they are really saving their best for the new album, and that New Divide was not typical of what’s to come… we’ll see.

Anyone who says LP sucks, seriously guys…. come on, look at their album sales for each record. And then tell me they suck. If you suck, noone will buy your music. And it is very obvious that people are purchasing LP’s music.

I can agree that “New Divide” sounds like “What I’ve Done”.
It has 3(!!!) same chords…
4th (minor key) chord was changed into major key. Tonality also changed for semitone down (from G minor key to F sharp minor key) , though Chester sings higher…
But don’t forget, it’s just official movie soundtrack. Don’t you think new LP album will sound like MTM remix? I want to say, prepare for something new…

I’ve never listened to them years ago, preferring bands like Pantera or Sepultura, and then I got into hip hop and electronic music something heavy. And only then I heard the Linkin Park / Jay-Z mash up and it sounded mighty sweet to my ears. I’m certain I used to hate on Linkin Park in the past and I feel different now. I’d love to hear this new genre-bending album.

LP has changed so much, theyve definitely matured and changed their sound, which is a good thing. writing more self-conscious lyrics and understanding that musical genius lies way beyond songs that sounds pretty darn similar (in the beginnning several of their songs could be said to sound similar at times, they even contained the same pattern of verse-chorus-verse-chester screams-song ends). but their fatal flaw is that they make different genre music now to BE different… they decided they wanted to change instead of letting the change be organic… minutes to midnight was pushed this way, but was still successful sales wise just because they’re f*cking LP (but that has nothing to be with them being good, look at green day). shinoda saying that they WANT to be different seems to be a suicide note on their musical integrity, they cant push “genre jumping”… i love this band, well, perhaps loved is a better word…they’ve let their ego get the best of them…shinoda sounds like a d*ck here…

All of you are going to think I’m crazy, but here is what I think. These guys are massively popular, and if this album turns out as great as LP says it will, it could a Joshua Tree-type album, something that is both hugely popular and critically acclaimed. I know I sound delusional, and as a fan of Linkin Park I’m a bit biased, but I guarantee you that this record will this era’s version of Joshua Tree. And it doesn’t hurt that U2-style arena rock is already one of their fortes.

Linkin Park is awesome.I believe they can make a new genre with their new album, LP are really hardworking and are making music for the sake of it, not anything else.their songs are so meaningful and uplifting.they’ve inspired me so much.

In my opinion I think Linkin Park should take another 3-4 years and really think about what they want their music to represent. Sure Minutes To Midnight was a bit more bearable than the last two records but it just sounded like they were trying their hardest to sound grown up and break out of that nu-metal tag they seem to have following them everywhere they go. I’m not berating them or purposely trying to insult them but I think it would do them some good if:

1. They stopped using the same formula over and over again. We get it, you like guitars, who doesn’t.

2. Shinoda stops rapping. Seriously someone please talk to him about that. No doubt he’s multi-talented but rapping, sweetie no.

3. They change their lyrics. I don’t know who told these guys that moaning and whining about basically nothing is what makes for a great song. Stop please with the ‘why me’ ‘you did this to me’ etc bullshit. The lyrics seem too distant from the band.

4. If they changed their lyrics and actually wrote about matters and issues in THEIR lives then maybe I would actually believe Chester means what he’s singing. Though he’s a great vocalist his voice sounds empty and uninterested
(eg The Trapeze Swinger by Iron & Wine probably conveys more emotion than all LP songs combined. Isn’t that sad? One song is more of a masterpiece than about 30 odd LP songs.

I don’t know, who am I to judge a band that’s obviously doing very well for themselves. It just doesn’t make any sense how a band like Thrice, a band that utterly flawless gets looked over time and time again and yet LP can play The Garden.

I don’t know if anyone saw this but Mike did a poll on the LP message board asking LP fans if they could have their own radio station what would they want to listen to. Now the majority chose:

Hollywood Undead / Korn / Evanescence / Disturbed / Saliva / Breaking Benjamin

Now take note bands like
MGMT, JUSTICE, VAMPIRE WEEKEND, DEATH CAB… and even SANTIGOLD & M83 where options but no, not for your average LP fan.

Linkin Park the best band of the 21st century? Ummm….no. Linkin Park sucks. A lot. While its more than a little premature to guess, that title will probably go to bands like Radiohead, The White Stripes, The Mars Volta, Interpol, My Morning Jacket, and the Decemberists, and other artists that make intelligent music. You know, the stuff that goes beyond the mental capacity of a middle schooler.

And if they really do “suck” than explain to me why thousands of people are at every one of their concerts, and why millions of people listen and love their music. Just want to point out one thing, in response to:

While I’m not the biggest fan of the lyrical content in a lot of Linkin Park songs, some of them are based on personal experiences. In Pieces is about Chester’s divorce, Valentine’s Day is allegedly about how Chester always feels bittersweet on Valentine’s Day because that’s the day his father died, Given Up is about his battles with drug addictions, Breaking the Habit has been long-rumored to be about a friend of Mike’s who committed suicide, etc… I agree that their lyrical delivery can be pretty homogenized and dull at times, but you can have a sincere inspiration for a song and wind up not being able to put it into words that are very moving.

I fail to see how they suck, when then influenced nearly every band of this decade, including Linkin Park. Anyway, I don’t have very high hopes for this album. The irony of a Linkin Park member criticizing mainstream musical taste is not lost on me.

Well, it’s good to see that Shinoda is ambitious about the band’s future. But the way he criticises the “modern-day” music makes me laugh. I mean half of the songs that you “refer” to as junk include many of LP’s songs as well. I mean besides Hybrid Theory, they sounded totally repetitive in Meteora and suffered an identity crisis in “Minutes to Midnight”.

I think these words are only meant for the fans to make them believe that the band is not still dead.
Shinoda is talking as if LP is going to revitalise the music. Well,for that happen he’s has to change the entire band’s style of music AND kick out the guitarist who plays literally the same tune in every song.

Hey Anonymous how old are you? Your comment “people who like MTM aren’t real LP fans” is stupid. MTM is not bad, it’s just different. I started listening to LP when Meteora came out. The old style represents this time period for me and it was cool. But now I’m six years older and I have more mature view about the world. It must have been the same thing for LP, that’s why the wrote MTM. You can discover different proofs for my opinion on this record ( little things give you away). And why are slow songs bad songs for so many people?

Mike set the expectations for the next album very high with this interview. So they must have something new.

Looking forward to the new LP.

I’m a few years older than their average fan, and I’m definetly a little more free-thinking and critical than the average lunkhead who was into Hybrid Theory/Meteora.

Having said that, I could see that these guys were true artists…influenced from everything from anime and Sci-Fi to comic books and abstract art. The visuals and music feed off eachother, and as a graphic artist myself, I could see that the band truly cares about the art and overall visual image.

This band has opened my eyes to a lot of music I wouldn’t otherwise consider, and so I will repay them by being open to all of their future endeavors.

My only wish is that they’d cut completely loose with their prog tendencies and stretch out the instrumental and ambient sections.

Linkinyves, i never meant to bash linkin park, they are a fantastic, original band, and I’ve been listening to them since hybrid theory was first released, so I have very high standards for them. Yes, music does evolve for many bands, but they totally rejected their previous style, and replaced it with this “pop rock” feel. This switch happens with many bands, and usually has the same result: a loss in originality and credibility. I don’t hate all of Minutes to Midnight, but generally I found it to be far below LP standards, and I think most LP fans who have been fans since the beginning would agree. MTM is exactly what Shinoda calls “junk food”. I’m very excited for the new album, and hope that Shinoda isn’t just trying to hype the album to sell more. I want to see something NEW and fresh, not something like MTM.

And to “Simon”, if we simply accepted every album we hear from a band that we like as good, then they would continue to spew out crap music. For example, if we simply accepted Metallica’s shift from heavy metal to whatever you call “St. Anger”, then they would continue to make albums that the majority of listeners do not enjoy. You have to look at every bands work critically, not accept it just because you like the bands previous work.

In my opinion, M2M was not Linkin Park. I never listen to this album because i don’t like it. But after 4 years that I have been a great fan of LP (When I heard “Somewhere I belong” in 2003, I get interested in music and in 2005 I became a great fan of them), I’m still listening to “Hybrid Theory” and “Meteora” (Especially Meteora) and I haven’t bored with them yet. But M2M was not Linkin Park and I believe that every band (Especially successful bands like LP) must always have their style to be unique. Linkin Park was unique. their first two studio albums were extremely unique, but there are many (Thousands of) albums like M2M. Every fan likes the original style of it’s favourite artist. For example none of the fans of “Metallica” like them to sing rap or R&B. And also none of the fans of “Eminem” like him to sing Thrash Metal. I hope that Linkin Park will return to it’s origin and the next album will be another “Hybrid Theory-Meteora”.

All Linkin Park is trying to do is stay relevant. Changing styles was necessary since their nu-metal thing is dead (at last). I will agree that as far as “nu-metal” goes they were the best… but come on, they needed to grow up.

“Minutes to Midnight” was a transitional album, so it can be forgiven. But I wonder what they’re working on right now… a new genre? I doubt they’ll be able to pull something like that out. But i’ll wait patiently. If they fail, I shall look down at them and laugh at their faces.

Truth is, no matter how hard they try, they seem to be stuck with a fanbase of 15 years old. I hope they realized that’s not good for them and decide somehow to create something worth people’s time.

I’m tired of all this MTM bashing.

I’ve love LP from the beginning and I also love MTM. I started listening to them when I was a teenager and now an adult I can totally see how they needed to record MTM. They could have easily recorded a trilogy of similar sounding albums by repeating Hybrid Theory and Meteora but they chose not to. By putting out MTM they showed progression and what a great band they are through the diversity of sounds. To me that album had the highest standard of lyrics and music. I’m not hoping for a repeat of any of the three albums. A true LP fan would be open to anything by those six great musicians. Bring on the new album!!!

I’ve been an LP fan eversince they came out in 2000… and like most of the LP fans out there, Hybrid Theory is my most favorite LP album ever. They have carried the nu-metal banner for almost half a decade and now that the nu-metal has been gone, it’s time for them to move on. Minutes to Midnight was a risk for them; in all fairness, I think they did a great job with that album. LP stepped out from their comfort zones for this album and I believe it had been never easy for them. There were mixed reviews for the album, but all in all it was a success. Linkin Park proved that their risks paid off! Though in my opinion Minutes to Midnight was way different from the first 2 albums, it’s a great CD to listen and their songwriting has evolved, too! Can’t wait for the next album…

Every exploited sub-genre of rock gets two bands who survive because they were just slightly better than the others. Like in hair metal it was Motley Crue and Guns n Roses, and in nu-metal it is Linkin Park and Slipknot.

It doesn’t mean they’re good bands, they just don’t suck as bad as Limp Bizkit, Dope, Crazy Town, POD, Ill Nino and all the other nu-metal bands left for dead in commercial viability.

There is a damn good reason why LP got the title track to the last Transformers movie, and was asked to create another awesome song for the new Transformers movie. As for this “concept” album, it’s a wait and see type deal. A lot of bands go very wrong with this kind of thing. Then again, I wasn’t sure how they were going to sound fresh yet still LP on Meteora and Minutes, yet they did. This band is very talented, hopefully they won’t dissapoint.

I totally know what Mike’s saying about Junk Food/Junk Music. Most Music that is considered popular these days makes me want to barf because it’s all been done before. Sure LP has their share of Remixed stuff (of their own songs) but those remixes are at least honest ones and don’t sound exactly the same. I love New Divide though. As soon as I found out about it I had to listen, and lo and behold, It made me feel even better than when I first really sat down and listened to Minutes to Midnight all the way through.

Linkin Park basically said the same thing for Minutes to Midnight. It will be something new, fresh, exciting, and they took alot of time on it. Look how it turned out. Every song except for “Little Things give you Away” were horrible. Now most people are like:

“Zomg this sucks I wish lp would go to their old stylez dude”.

Now, as a band grows older, their style of music changes. I’m not expecting songs that blew me away like “From the Inside”, “With You”, “By Myself”, “In the End”, “Pushing Me Away”. They play these songs live still to this date, so it’s not like they forgot about how they used to be.

Lastly, creating a new genre is a bad attempt to get heads turning. It’s going to basically be a carbon copy of Minutes To Midnight, maybe with a tad more hip-hop verses, and maybe…just maybe…Joe Hahn can be heard on this album.

Hey Nick did you not hear Bleed It Out or Given Up or Leave Our All The Rest or In Between or In Pieces or No More Sorrow or What I’ve Done? All these songs where good songs your just don’t like them because they don’t have a lot of hip-hop in them. Linkin Park is not just hip-hop they are their own thing. I really hope that LP moves away from there new stuff (Minutes to Midnight) and i hope that the new CD has singles that are more like the Hybrid Theory and Meteora. There was a lot of good songs on Minutes To Midnight, but i think ther old stuff was much better. In Their Minutes to Midnight Cd there was like only two songs where both Shinoda and Bennington were in it, while in their old songs, they were both in almost every song.

Yeah, I feel the same way about the music that I listen to. I don’t know why we have this argument, but whatever. Honestly, though, Hybrid Theory was a good album. Everything after wasn’t, though. Or, in my opinion, it wasn’t. Which is why I don’t think they can do something different.

“Huh” have you not heard Meteora that was a great album, with songs like Don’t Stay, Somewhere I Belong, Lying From You, Eadisr To Run, Faint, Figure.09, Breaking The Habit, From The Inside, Nobody’s Listening, and Numb. Minutes To Midnight had a few great songs like Given Up, Leave Out All the Rest, Bleed It Out, What I’ve Done, No More Sorrow, In Between, In Pieces, and The Little Things Give You Away. Oh and Reanimation was good with all the Hybrid Theory remixes. What band do you like, who knows I might like them to. I love you Linkin Park!

Ok people. Linkin Park is my favorite band by far. But what i would like to know is why the hell wont they come Canada as much as they do the States and other countrys??? I live in Saskatchewan and we have had some big bands come here such as AC/DC, Rolling Stones, Rush etc. and all of those conserts were sold out in no time and turned out amazing. Thats all i am saying is that LP needs to really start moving away from the places they always play in and come to the places they never play in like Western Canada. This way they would get more new fans and alot more support.

There is an awful lot of LP bashing going on here. I think the majority of it stems from one angry source that feels like he was betrayed by the sound change. Every member of a band has different music tastes and each one of them’s style evolves differently. You can’t ask the same band to put out a million Hybrid Theory-esk albums or then they turn into fakes because they never looked beyond the current sound. Pearl Jam, U2, RHCP have all changed in ways that kept them viable for years to come. I’ve loved all the albums because each one invokes different feelings. Which is what they go for. So in the end don’t bash the band for changing judge yourself for having such a narrow and prejudice view towards music. LP is a class act and extremely versatile. So Deal. LP 4 Life.

What some people find awesome, others might find terrible. However I dare anyone to name a band they like that sounds anything like Linkin Park and has had similar success. They are by far the most original band I’ve ever heard. None of their song’s sound exactly the same (unlike green day, new found glory and most rap artists). I’m looking forward to their next album and hope that it will be what Mike Shinoda says.
