“American Idol” Winner Kris Allen on Rocking Softly, Covering Dylan

He’s only been Season Eight’s American Idol for five days, but Kris Allen is already moving on from last week’s star-packed finale and thinking about his next steps. In an exclusive interview with Rolling Stone’s Brian Hiatt, he reveals how he pulled off covering Dylan on the show and whether he would have entered the competition without his guitar.

People say you’re the “soft rock” guy on the show.
It’s nice to hear “rock.” People call Coldplay soft rock, and they’re amazing. For me, all the stuff that I did on the show, I feel like were pretty conducive to what I’m going to do on an album, that pop-rock kind of thing.

You’re one of the few singers to do a Bob Dylan song (”Make You Feel My Love”) on the show.
I was trying to beat the system, I knew it was a Bob Dylan song, and they were like, “Let’s do country week,” and I was like, “I know Garth Brooks did this,” so I was trying to beat the system, but it just ended up working out. I love Bob Dylan, he’s an amazing writer.

People saw larger significance in the contest, that there was a cultural battle being fought. What’s your take on that?
Me and Adam talked about it — we are really good friends — and people were talking about I’m getting the Christian vote and Adam’s getting… we’re not running for president, we’re not running an election here, we’re just trying to be musicians and be artists, and I hope that’s what people are voting on and people are calling in for, and I know that’s not always the case.

Now you have a career to think about. What kind of approach do you want to take to your career, what do you want to achieve?
More than anything, to be respected and be in the music business and just sell albums and make great music, that’s all I want to do.

Idol seemed like a strange place for rock artists to come from at first, has that changed?
Yeah, I think so. I think once they incorporated the instrument kind of thing that a lot of the rock people were going to jump on that bandwagon. There have been a couple — Chris Daughtry is one of them — who had an instrument and came along.

Would you have entered five years ago before instruments were permitted?
Probably not, man, because I probably wouldn’t have done well, to be honest with you. I think for me, the thing that got me the furthest was my ability to play and my ability to arrange songs and all that kind of stuff and make them mine and show that I’m an artist, not just a signer.

“Falling Slowly” was a song you don’t think of on Idol. Had you seen the movie, Once?
Yeah, I’d seen the movie, and I was trying to think of a song that week, and I was like, “What’s something I can really relate to?” I’d seen the movie, and I was like, “I really love that movie, and I’m gonna take a chance and sing this song,” and I knew it was going to be risky and not a lot of people were going to know it, but it won an Oscar, so I knew it was a very respected song. I went up there, and that week, I had watched it like three times, because I really wanted to feel the song, and I went out there and I just sang it, man.

Since you were the underdog and now you’re the winner, do you feel like you have to prove you’re worth it?
No, I think that hasn’t gone through my head. Throughout this whole competition, I think people were maybe … not underestimating me, but just not … Danny and Adam were frontrunners throughout this whole thing, and they’re great, and kudos to them, they deserved it.

I think he’s right when he says he’s an artist and pop-rock. He’s the only one who has proven he can revamp a song completely, play various instruments, be original in its arrangements and take big risks. He’s the true heir of people like sting, caetano veloso and so on. I liked adam but he reminds me more of axl rose if i had to qualify its vocals.

Iby Mathews | 5/26/2009, 6:47 pm EST

KRIS ALLEN IS SOO AWESOME. HE DESERVED TO WIN AMERICAN IDOL. AND I THINK HE IS GONNA BE A VERY SUCESSFUL ARTIST LIKE HE WANTS TO BE.
XOXO,
HUGE KRIS ALLEN FAN

KRIS ROCKZ MY SOCKS OFF ! ! !
LOL

Anonymous | 5/26/2009, 6:52 pm EST

Let’s not forget that Jason Castro did a Dylan song last season!

Rebecca Kris' #1 fan! | 5/26/2009, 7:02 pm EST

I missed most all of Idol this year because of personal problems, being gone alot and having a whole lot of work and school. The only episode I saw was Adam and Kris performing for the final vote. As soon as I saw Kris I thought, “Yeah, he’s hot,” but when I heard him sing I realized there was more to him than just his looks. I thought Adam was great, but I have never been the kind of artsy person he is. I am a cowgirl and have never listened to anything but country and gospel. However, after hearing Kris perform just one song, my musical taste has been tweaked. As Simon said, Kris has that special touch when he sings that makes you feel what he feels as he sings. I mean, I had chills fron his songs. He is an amazing artist and the only rock star I will ever like. (And I mean I have always thought of rock as ‘the devils music’). I wish Kris luck and that he will come to know the Lord of all, if he does not already, and that through that, his music will be even better, although it seems he can hardly improve it anymore.

Miranda | 5/26/2009, 7:07 pm EST

I swear, Kris is the hottest, cutest guy I have ever seen. As an 18 year old who has always been leary of guys especially if they are hot, I can safely say that Kris is one guy with not only a lot of talent that will most definatly take him far, but unless I miss my mark, he is more importantly a gentleman who I would not mind hanging out with. I wish you the best of luck Kris! Rock on!

Vada | 5/26/2009, 7:09 pm EST

Nice interview. Thanks R&R Daily.
Kris is an artist, in my opinion.

Kaylee | 5/26/2009, 7:12 pm EST

Did Rolling Stone interview Adam during the New York press junket? I know the magazine usually interviews both. When will that article/interview appear?

Tammy | 5/26/2009, 7:13 pm EST

Uh, yeah, Jason Castro did Bob Dylan last year “Tambourine Man” so Kris is NOT the first to cover Dylan on Idol.

pippi | 5/26/2009, 7:17 pm EST

I love kris, since day one I thought he was special, he was not as sparkling as Adam was, but he kinda of grows on you and before you know it he becomes your best friend and the guy you want to spend quality time with. I guess what I am tring to say is that you can tell his music comes from his heart and I am sure he is in for a wild long ride even more that he can immagine.

Anonymous | 5/26/2009, 7:22 pm EST

Kris is just Taylor Hicks all over again and will slide back into obscurity where he belongs.

evelyn | 5/26/2009, 7:27 pm EST

Kris will be a new Jackson Brown for the current era. Looking forward to great things from him. He has wonderful musical taste and a very war and engaging image. Be yourself Kris and make sure the 19 people let you make a record that sounds like you.

Roz | 5/26/2009, 7:28 pm EST

Kris Allen just brings the music. Simple as that. Authentic and creative, he is great to listen to and is real feel good, but with a twist. He won against industry hype and that takes resiliance, he’s got a lot more than folks see on first glance – love him in Western Canada!

slimdave420 | 5/26/2009, 7:33 pm EST

The article state a few have sung Dylan, dang read the article before you try and correct it.

Heidi | 5/26/2009, 7:37 pm EST

Long live Kradam. Love the boys & their close friendship.

Arkansasgirl | 5/26/2009, 7:42 pm EST

I respect Kris so much.He has stayed tru to himself and throughout the competition was the ‘quiet fire’.People didn’t expect him to win,not because he wasn’t talented, but because they just hadn’t seen much of him or because he wasn’t the judges favorite.I hate that they call it the “biggest idol upset”,there are alway going to be people upset of course. If their favorite didn’t win.But there were millions of people jumping up and down in their living room when kris won, including me:) In the end it doesn’t matter who got the title, they both won in the long run.Now they understand that,i just wish their fans did.I see so much arguing online between kris and adams fans it’s just so sad.I love Kris! Go Arkansas’s hometown boy!

Arkansasgirl | 5/26/2009, 7:45 pm EST

Oh and by the way Kris is nothing like Taylor Hicks, they can’t be compared.I don’t think Kris is going anywhere:)

safarigirl | 5/26/2009, 7:52 pm EST

To Evelyn I was thinking the same thing about Kris being this generation’s Jackson Brown. I don’t think we know him well enough yet to determine if he has the passion for causes that Jackson and others like him had and still have. Kris is really a good kid – Adam’s absolutely my guilty pleasure but I like the man that is Kris Allen. I want him to also be very successful in his own right.

Kris, please read this! | 5/26/2009, 7:54 pm EST

I did’nt really watch much american idol, especially these last few years. The last time I watched it I was in the fifth grade and a huge Carrie Underwood fan, and just look at how she turned out. I watched this season from the top 36 on, and ever since I saw Kris perform “To make you feel my love” I was hooked. I voted for endless hours and was thrilled every time he made it. I dont have many exciting things happening in my house lately, so that was the highlight of every week for me. I watched Kris and each week, as he sang, I was always moved, specifically when he sang Aint no sunshine, heartless, Falling Slowly, No BOundaries, and She Works hard for the Money. This kid is a genious and he totally deserves this, not only for his incredible personality, but his flawless performances and unaltered talent. Adam may be stronger vocally, but he lacks the emotion that he puts into each song. His many records are going to be terrific, and I truly in my heart feel that he is going to be one of the most successful American Idol winners ever. This will not be a Taylor Hicks repeat, I really think that this will be a Kelly repeat. Kris, if you read this, know that you are extremely talented and you will do great. Reguardless of the envious Glamberts and even Simon Cowell, you are going to be big. Just you wait. And thank you for being such an amazing person and projecting that through your music. Never let go of that. See you August 12th in the Nassau Coliseum!

Anonymous | 5/26/2009, 8:17 pm EST

At the beginning, I thought Adam was the greatest, and only voted for Kris because he is from my home state. But in the last 8 weeks he seemed to stand out more and more, and I saw him as the best, not Adam.

Katie | 5/26/2009, 8:18 pm EST

Can’t ever watch Idol again….Adam Lambert was the most powerful contestant ( and best singer )ever and he lost. Older voters don’t text and dialing doesn’t work – too many busy signals. It’s not a singing contest – it’s a texting contest….

Di | 5/26/2009, 8:34 pm EST

I love the fact that people are recognizing that Kris IS A TRUE ARTIST, not just a cute face. When I heard him sing “She Works Hard for the Money” I was completely amazed at the arrangement and thought to myself “this guy has a special talent.” My favorite has to be “Heartless” and “Apologize”, but “No Boundaries” is really growing on me (big surprise to me). Nice interview Brian Hiatt.

sjjblondie | 5/26/2009, 8:37 pm EST

sick and tired of hearing about how Adam should have won ! He came in second which is great. Kris is the winner so let him
enjoy his win . Good luck Kris and Adam and to all top 10 winners

achooo | 5/26/2009, 8:40 pm EST

fuck off kris allen…go write your own shit. i’m sick and tired of people becoming famous just because they can sing…it’s talentless crap and there’s nothing artistic about it.

Katie | 5/26/2009, 8:47 pm EST

Kris is great but Adam is going to be the real future icon.

Haley | 5/26/2009, 8:54 pm EST

Sweet kid but BORING. If he’s lucky, Kris Allen might have a moderately successful career…maybe a gold album, playing at medium-small venues. But I am 100% sure he will not become a Superstar. Adam Lambert on the other hand will be going multi-platinum, playing to sold out stadiums worldwide and winning Grammy’s. And fairly soon. I would bet money on it!

sami | 5/26/2009, 9:07 pm EST

Clay Aiken. Shame on you for attacking a fellow AI contestant. You did not win AI either, so you should be more humble about Adam Lambert. He is far more talented that you are or ever will be. I used to like you a lot, but you have lot my respect. Go Adam. We love you.

Cami | 5/26/2009, 9:08 pm EST

I love Kris. He is really talented and I wish him the best of luck in the music industry (Adam too!)

J9BT | 5/26/2009, 9:17 pm EST

Great interview. LOVE KRIS! To the person who said they wouldn’t watch any more – let’s just say you would have no idea who Adam Lambert is without IDOL. He was voted into the finals and won without winning. Kris won too. So if you hate music and up and coming artists, don’t watch.

So if you hate music and learning about up and coming artists, don’t watch.

anon | 5/26/2009, 9:24 pm EST

Whaaaat??? Kris won? Really, are you serious? I hadn’t heard. Oh well good luck to both!!

Julie | 5/26/2009, 9:29 pm EST

Great interview! Kris is an open-minded, smart, funny guy, and I’m glad he didn’t try to pander to get the Christian vote, or get votes for anything other than his music. His friendship with Adam is very heartwarming. I wish them both well.

tij | 5/26/2009, 9:52 pm EST

Kris is the luckiest guy in the world.
1) Beautiful wife
2) Didn’t have a job before idol
3) Wasn’t seriously trying out for idol – casual auditioning
4) Wasn’t seriously trying to win idol
5) Won $1 mil recording contract as winner of idol
6) Will now guest on all the TV shows

How could anyone be luckier?
You don’t have to work hard to have it all. God and the USA will give them all to you.

learst | 5/26/2009, 10:18 pm EST

Great short interview. Glad to see more articles now that focus on Kris himself rather than the OMG! Adam-loss angle.

Mariana | 5/26/2009, 10:26 pm EST

Thanks for this very good interview. Kris is amazing and his music really goes to people hearts. I’m so happy I found his music and his voice because he makes me a happier person. Thanks Kris!

laurei | 5/26/2009, 10:46 pm EST

Love Kris’ music! The guy has a true gift. I think its funny how people underestimated him in the show; first the producers who gave him no air time, then the judges who didn’t think he had enough flash, and now people are saying he won’t amount to much; well… There have been numerous artists with a low key style like Kris that have had plenty of albums go platinum. What is so impressive about Kris is that we didn’t have him spoon-fed to us like Lil, Danny and Adam, instead we were won over by his artistry and voice week after week. Particularly in the earlier rounds when someone so laid back as him should have been easy to overlook among Anoop, Megan, Scott (the blind guy) and the others, as it would seem the producers intended! However, America votrd each week for someone whose talent we appreciated.

Kimg714 | 5/26/2009, 11:08 pm EST

Okay! So I have watched Idol for all 8 seasons and Kris is marketable- big time. I worry about his album and I know 19 has a lot of control over it so it is a little scary to see what they will come out with knowing his genre of music. Lets hope he has staying power as I am a huge fan! If he sticks to the Jason Mraz, Gavin Degraw (forget Mayer – way overrated) kind of music I think he will shine!

Samantha | 5/26/2009, 11:26 pm EST

I didnt even know “To Make You Feel My Love” was a Bob Dylan song, have only heard Garth Brooks’ rendition. But since I saw a You Tube video of Kris Allen singing it on Idol, I loved it, and have listened to it every day. Kris has a sincere style that goes right to your heart as if the song is meant just for you.

Christina | 5/27/2009, 12:37 am EST

Lovely interview! Kris is an amazing artist, I have the highest of hopes for him.

mtlfan | 5/27/2009, 12:38 am EST

love love this guy!! He’s a great artist and I’m thrill to see what he’ll do in the future

Thomas | 5/27/2009, 1:32 am EST

I LOVE this guy. Seriously, I’m almost in love with him. Hope he makes it big!

JS2009 | 5/27/2009, 2:17 am EST

I just love the fact that Kris is not only a great singer/songwriter but that he is an extraordinary man. If anyone in the world deserves this, it’s Kris. I will buy every album you put out.

cyril | 5/27/2009, 4:33 am EST

He did it on his own, with no help from the producers or the press. He gave the only true original performance on the show, and sang it better than the original. He had allot of really good, nuanced performances, that went unappreciated by Simon. In the end, he beat Adam, so people must have loved his pared down music. I liked it.
Nicest thing is, Kris has fans, people who enjoy his sound. Not crazy and scary hysterical worshipers like Adam.
He won, and the other guy lost. Plain and simple.

danita | 5/27/2009, 4:41 am EST

kris is adorable, and he makes every song sound like a modern hit. He does so many different and interesting things with them, not just yell them out as loud as he can, like Adam. Also, he’s a great musician, and he’s going to write beautiful songs. Maybe he’s not “in your face” like Adam, but the best things take time, and he’ll outlast Adam and his one note style. He’ll be writing and creating music for many years after Adam has become yesterdays news.

Babyboomer Kradam | 5/27/2009, 4:52 am EST

I’m astounded by how much Kris’s singing reminds me of my 2 favorite singers back in the 70’s: Elton John and Stevie Wonder. He has the pure tone, diction, beat. I listened to “Big Brother” by Stevie Wonder last night and it spooked me when I thought Kris was singing. I’m thrilled to find a youthful new artist to bring me new music from today’s compositions; but Kris can sing RB, pop, country, rock. An even wider range of genres than Elton. I really hope Kris will have the right support to grow into a super star. He’s a humble artist, great young man.

Adam reminds me of a new David Bowie. American Idol really lucked out this year to find two super star potentials. Both are great people. Their friendship is awesome.

Andrea | 5/27/2009, 6:10 am EST

God, I can’t believe I’m bored wnough to post. I LOVE Adam, but I’m totally digging their bromance! lol
The one thing I wish is that people wouldn’t keep saying the nice/humble guy won. Watching interviews of them both, I feel they are the same in that respect. Its annoying how there is this insinuation that Adam is somehow less of a role model. I think ppl confuse his swagger onstage with how he is otherwise.

Mandy | 5/27/2009, 7:37 am EST

Kris Allen’s debut album will be released right about the same time as Jason Castro’s debut album. Castro is on a major label not affiliated with 19 Entertainment, Atlantic Records. He’s been working on the album for more than a year with 30 songs already in the vault and he has some of the best songwriters/ producers in the business working on it with him. Their styles are very similar. Kris even says Jason is the reason he tried out for AI. In terms of sales, this could be very, very intersting. Don’t underestimate Castro. We may be in for another “shocker” when he outsells the current American Idol. “Hallelujah”!

Cathy | 5/27/2009, 8:01 am EST

I was able to download Kris’ EP “Brand New Shoes” that he recorded a couple of years ago. The guy can write, believe me. But AI is not a showcase for songwriting. It’s a TV show first, then a popularity contest, then a singing competition (TM Elliott Yamin). If he’s able to collaborate with some experienced writers and the right producers, he could come up with a GREAT CD!

Shirley | 5/27/2009, 9:47 am EST

I’m so looking forward to Kris’s debut album. I know I’m greedy but I hope he can do some acoustic songs, some R&B, some uptempo pop rock, some rock ballads, some jazz/blues and country ballads. He’s the King of multi-genres! But I guess his album would most probably have to lean towards one direction. I’m still hoping that he can try to experiment with different types of music. I like variety on an album.

Susan52 | 5/27/2009, 9:59 am EST

Great interview. I love that Kris refers to himself as an artist and not just a singer. I believe America realized that he really is an artist and voted for him on those merits. I started following him because I’m from Arkansas, too, but I have truly become a fan.

Snaves | 5/27/2009, 10:35 am EST

American Idol blows. Can we just get that out of the way? Havving heard both a couple times, I can safely say that Kris will be doing about as well as the two Davids, a little better than Taylor Hicks. Adam…its tough to say. He needs a band. If he just comes out as a solo artist, I don’t think it will work. He was born to be a frontman. If 19 tries to sell him as a solo act, I think he will become another Idol who just kind of fades.

Karen | 5/27/2009, 11:52 am EST

I don’t really follow idol, but I do like to watch the final three. For me, it was no question who I thought was the most marketable and who would be the most relevant in today’s POP music world. That is the person who won…Kris.

I mean, don’t get me wrong, Adam can sing his butt off, but do I really want to buy an album by Adam, not so much. I would pay to see him live or on Broadway, which is where I think he will be a success. I mean, come on Rolling Stone, do we really think Queen, Kiss and hair band style music is going to make a comeback…I don’t see it happening. Would be kinda cool though. Plus, Kris is the only one up there singing songs made after 2000. :)

Last, Kris was the only one who played an instrument. For me, it is just karoke unless you know how to play and change a song up. Heartless is what got my attention, as I am sure the rest of the casual fans.

It still amazes me how crazy Idol fans are. I mean Adam’s fans remind me of the Claymates. They were scary.

Kat | 5/27/2009, 1:13 pm EST

The point about Jason Castro made earlier…ok, some may say that Jason and Kris are similar at the first listen but that’s about it. Jason is not a great singer but he may appeal to some peeps who like a low key mandolin/banjo kinda music. Kris is a much better interpreter and arranger and a better singer. That said, 19E is evil and they will probably try to fit him in some limited compartment. But, if people who appreciate good music buy Kris’ stuff he may be able to gain more freedom on his second album. The guy is so talented and he deserves success.

Yss | 5/27/2009, 1:32 pm EST

I love that Kris has always been very sure about the kind of artist he is…from the song choices and the arrangements is nice to know that he always had a reason behind it and that it was to stay true to himself…

Love Kris and Adam, KrAdam: the best top 2 in AI history!

rfb | 5/27/2009, 1:39 pm EST

Kris is great!!!!! Hope all the contraversy going on now doesn’t spoil it for Kris and Adam.

tricia | 5/27/2009, 2:21 pm EST

AI is irrelevant, but as for being Jackson Brown, Brown was a prolific songwriter, we have no idea if Kris is even a mediocre songwriter.

Having followed Mraz since I was in high school -9:30 club performances, before or during Java Joe phase I’d say Allen has a long way to go. I don’t think he ‘ll make it big after his first Idol promoted CD, but he’ll have a small loyal following.

Adam, he is dynamic, but it could go either way there as well. That will be about choices.

Brooke | 5/27/2009, 4:56 pm EST

I LOVE KRIS ALLEN HE IS THE MOST AMAZIGN PERSON ON THIS WHOLE EARTH!!! HE IS THE BEST SING PLUS HE IS REALLY CUTE!

CA music fan | 5/27/2009, 5:03 pm EST

Thanks for a great interview and more insight into Kris Allen and his artistry.

This guy got my attention for his choices. He auditioned with a Leon Russell song, dammit. He continued to make smart song choices that were not your usual AI fare and showed a real knowledge of the poetry of music.

He may not have the most technically perfect voice, but what he has is interesting and very nice to listen to.

I’ve searched out his original work and if he’s allowed to do his thing with his first album, we’re in for a treat.

Sean | 5/27/2009, 5:30 pm EST

I like Kris but i liked Adam better.

Im glad for Kris even that I wanted
Adam to win.

Im glad that it was Kris or Adam.
They were the best ones out.

Amanda kris's true #1 fan | 5/27/2009, 6:24 pm EST

I LOVE KRIS HE IS SO GOOD AND I KNEW THAT FROM THE START THAT HE WAS GOING TO WIN I USUALLY WAS NEVER EXCITED TO WATCH AMERICAN IDOL BUT THIS YEAR I COULD NOT WEIGHT FOR THE NEXT WEEK SO I COULD HEAR ANOTHER KRIS ALLEN ORIGINAL BECAUSE HE DID MAKE EVERY SONG HIS OWN AND ALWAYS MADE IT AMAZING I LOVE YOU KRIS AND I CANT WEIGHT FOR YOUR FIRST ALBUM I WILL BUY THEM ALL YOU ARE SO HOT BEST OF LUCK

Amanda kris's true #1 fan | 5/27/2009, 6:28 pm EST

KRIS IS SOOOOOOOOOOOOO HOT

lemoi | 5/27/2009, 8:19 pm EST

BTW, that is Jackson Browne not Jackson Brown. That being said, I agree Kris has that same vibe. Love him.

Starr | 5/27/2009, 9:33 pm EST

Having listened to Kris Allen’s earlier stuff from Brand New Shoes, I can tell you guys that this guy is a clever songwriter. His lyrics are witty, earnest and what I love most about him is the nuance in his voice. He’s not a power belter like Adam Lambert, but he’s taken a song, turned it around to make it sound fresh and current (like his take on Marvin Gaye’s classic “What’s Going On”), and vocally he has a combo of a little R&B and soul but also that pop/rock quality that makes him a dream to listen to on an iPod or the radio. I think this guy is going to go very far. He may not be your typical American Idol because he’s a musician rather than a singer, and he knows exactly who he is and what album he wants to be, and people will either like it or hate it, but I think this guy is a true artist and we can expect great things from him. I love that he didn’t compromise who he was as an artist during the course of the show just to get far. He stayed true to himself musically, and obviously it paid off. I think America’s choice of him as American Idol reflects well on where America is musically. Rather than choose someone like Adam Lambert, who let’s admit, although he is an exciting artist, is vocally a step back in the music industry – he has a voice that is reminiscent of artists of the past: Axl Rose, Steven Tyler, etc. Kris has a voice that suits the here and now in the industry, with the likes of Jack Johnson, Matt Costa, Gavin DeGraw and Jason Mraz who are successful today. Oh, and if he can take a crappy, preachy song like “No Boundaries” and make it listenable, he’s definitely got the musical chops.

Brittany | 5/27/2009, 9:41 pm EST

I agree that Kris is cute, but hey, that shouldn’t be the only reason he won. It’s pretty obviose that Adam is a much better singer. The only reason Adam didn’t win is because he is gay, and that should’t mean that you can’t vote for him. Honestly, I have loved Adam from that start, and he has never let any of his fans down. I think Adam is going to be much more successful with his career. GO ADAM LAMBERT.

ShariG | 5/28/2009, 12:50 am EST

Both Kris and Adam are amazingly talented in different ways. Kris is the grass roots guy, self taught, beautiful phrasing, nice job on guitar and keyboards, very listenable voice, all around guy next door likeability. He relates well to middle America and sings with a genuine honesty that is hard to resist. Adam has one of the most beautiful voices I have ever heard. He can sing anything. But, he chose to go the 80s glam-rock route that appeals to some but not all. Many found him too over the top, too theatrical, not genuine, rather playing the role of rock star. I think that may have hurt him, but you have to give credit to both of these guys for staying true to themselves no matter what the judges said. Kris did not try to out Adam Adam. He stayed believable with his connection to the music he arranged and to the audience. Adam took risks and entertained week after week with sometimes outrageous performances, like Ring of Fire that was very polarizing. I love them both and look forward to both of their albums coming out. But, I voted for Kris and am really happy that he won.

G-Bear | 5/28/2009, 3:52 am EST

Good luck to both winners !
Oh by the way Adam you are hot baby….hot !…hot !…HOT !
In the looks dept you remind me of a cross between Elvis & Kurt Russel when you sang “Trax of my Tears”. You owned that stage with every performance. Wish you would have sang “Lov’in Touch’in Squeez’in” by Steve Perry before the end, so keep it in mind, you’ll blow us away I’m sure.
PS-I loved your version of “Ring of Fire” ! Eat your heart out Johnny Cash !

There’s no doubt that Adam can sing. But I don’t think there’s much demand for the Kiss type of music of the past. So I’m glad that Kris won. I like his style. I think that he and Jason Castro will go far. I can’t wait for their albums to come out.

kris allen is an amazing artist, talented. unique.. he truly deserves the idol crown.

kichi | 5/28/2009, 3:29 pm EST

Kris deserved to win and let the guy enjoy his win! Adam gracefully took 2nd place. Wish the media and fans could be happy for Kris as much as he deserves. I like both guys and hope the best for them in their respective careers.

Carmen | 5/29/2009, 7:31 pm EST

Kris is great to listen to, but his talent doesn’t even reach Adam’s knees.Adam is a great performer, with a talent never seem in any of this seasons. It’s unfortunately that a company like ATT will get involved in this voting controversy favoriting Kris and breaking the rules of American Idol. Don’t get me wrong Kris seems to be a nice guy but with very little talent compare to Adam.America knows who the real winner was and he can have the title but will never have the talent.

Kelly | 5/30/2009, 8:11 am EST

Kris is signing with Jive Records. He’ll be on the roster with Jordin Sparks and David Archuleta.
Allison is also possibly being signed by Jive depending on how well she does on the tour.
Adam is signing with RCA. He’ll be on the roster with Kelly Clarkson, David Cook and Chris Daughtry.

bryan | 5/30/2009, 7:41 pm EST

Love Kris. Love Adam. Each will have their place on my ipod….Kris will be playing when I want to chill and Adam will be playing on road trips and the like. They both bring a different style and different skill set to the mix – for me it is not that one or the other is better – they both are awesome at what they do.

In five years time, the winner vs. runner up result will probably prove to have been the best result for each of their careers. Kris will do great either way but Adam would not likely fair as well under Idol contract for a year and having to fit their mold, instead of his own.

Can’t wait for the first CDs to drop – Congrats to Kris and Adam.

LeChatz8 | 5/31/2009, 1:40 pm EST

Well finally an article about Kris without Adam shadowing him.

He did after all WIN.

Rolling Stone should be putting him on the cover without the words shock, upset, surprise.

I was not shocked or upset and definitely not surprised Kris Allen won.

He’s awesome. He rocks. He’s an artist.

Anonymous | 6/1/2009, 12:21 am EST

Adam is by far and away the most talented singer that I’ve heard in years and years!!!! What a class act Adam is and A BRILLIANT SINGER!!!! Adam is the true Idol… nobody compares to him!!! Absolutely love adam!!!!!!!!!!!

Raining | 6/1/2009, 7:36 pm EST

Kris Allen ROCK period.
When will rollingstone really recognize Kris’s huge star power?

I’m waiting.

Sherry: Stop posting the same comment over and over again. Adam is not planning to sing Kiss or 80’s rock, just FYI, and he will not be “screaming” his way through heavy metal. He’s got an incredibly beautiful voice, and it is much toned down and showcased in studio versions, which are all on iTunes. And arrangements are done well to accommodate them. Obviosuly not many ppl have hear them but are quick to judge. I have absolutely nothing against Kris, but while he may fit the mold, he will do just that: fit in with the rest of the acoustic/ soft rock singers out there. Adam on the other hand, may create a whole ne genre and blow the music scene away the way the Beatles did in their time, who were also considered unconventional

He’s got a beautiful voice that showcases and is more toned down in the studio, along with arrangements that acommodate his unique style. Obviously, not many ppl have heart his iTunes songs, but are quick to judge. I have absolutely nothing against Kris; he will fit in very well with the likes of John Mayer and Dave Matthews, but that’s just it. Adam, on the other hand, might not fit the mold, but he certainly has a chance to create a new genre the way the Beatles did in their own time…

Ray, Ken, Greg & Tom | 6/4/2009, 2:12 pm EST

Could some body please tell us if we’re wrong…but didn’t even the judges look shocked when Adam didn’t take first place ?

Kittycomere | 6/7/2009, 1:48 pm EST

Kris is a mediocre talent, many, many times on the show flat or off-key, and America crowned him over a Hugely Talented impeccable vocalist like Adam Lambert why? We need to not give him interviews and pretend his crown has some merit. The only reason anybody reads his interviews is to scan through to see if they can glean any little tidbit they can find about Adam!

Singapore's Kick Awesome:) | 6/8/2009, 10:51 am EST

Kris is a wholesome, talented musician who plays instruments and re-invents songs. Check out his video performances on AI website: the latin-inspired “She works hard for the money”, the emotionally-haunting “Falling slowly” sung in his mesmerising lower register, a contemporary re-invent of the classic “Ain’t no sunshine”, the touching country ballad “To make you feel my love”, the sexy “The way you look tonight”, a more energised version of “Apologize”, the funk-rock re-invent of Beatles’ classic “Come Together”, the laid-back, chilling “What’s going on” and the acoustic soulful take on Kanye’s “Heartless”. For studio version of the songs, check out itunes/Youtube and you will realise this dude got a wonderful recording voice, with celebrity good looks to go along with:)

I hope that he can come to Singapore and the rest of Asia to promote his debut album:)

His coronation song “No Boundaries” is currently #1 on our country’s radio station! Go Kris Allen!

Jet | 6/8/2009, 8:44 pm EST

Yeah, Kris got me and my girl with “Make You Feel My Love.” My girl was like “oh, it’s like he’s singing it to me, why can’t you be like him..” Me? I was just blown by his cover of a Dylan song, Kris rocked, man! Then he did “She Works Hard For The Money” and “Heartless”. This guy is amazing! I hope he does as well with his original album and comes out with it soon, I think I have memorized all of his songs. Girl keeps playing them.

JAN LYNN | 6/9/2009, 1:28 am EST

IAM 56 AND I WILL NEVER UNDERSTAND
HOW SOME PEOPLE THINK AND I SUPPOSE
THEY MEAN IT THAT KRIS ALLEN IS
A BETTER SINGER THAN ADAM. ADAM HAS
SUCH A RANGE IN HIS VOCALS AND CAN
SING ANYTHING. STANDING O BY SMOKIE
ROBINSON,TRACKS OF MY TEARS, STAND-
ING O FOR MAD WORLD. HE USED A
DIFFERENT VOCAL RANGE. BRILLIANT.
I LOVE HIS ROCK MUSIC. BRILLIANT.
I OBVIOUSLY MISSED SOMETHING WHEN
KRIS WAS SINGING. A COUPLE GOOD
SONGS BUT NOTHING THAT I HAVEN’T
HEARD BEFORE. HIS PERFORMANCE ON
MARVIN GAYS, WHATS GOING ON, WAS
AWFUL. HE DESTROYED A GREAT SONG.
HE HAS WORKED HARD AND I REALLY
HOPE HE DOES WELL. BUT THE AMERICAN
IDOL, I THOUGHT, WAS A SINGING
COMPETITION AND I MUST SAY ADAM
BLEW KRIS OUT OF THE WATER ALL
THE WAY. I TRULY THINK ADAM WAS
JUST TOO TALENTED FOR AMERICAN IDOL. HE MAY NOT PLAYED AN
INSTRUMENT BUT HE DIDN’T NEED TO.
JUST WATCHING HIM SING/PERFORM
WAS ENOUGH. ROCK ON ADAM.

Kris’s fans better be ready to put their money where their mouth is! I know Adam’s fans will!

ella | 6/9/2009, 12:46 pm EST

kudos to you, kris! well done, and thanks for continuing that music genre on idol. clever, clever

Dana | 6/9/2009, 1:13 pm EST

I am happy that Kris won, I think he is a great talent, definitely more mainstream then Adam, you know someone wins and someone loses, but really there is no real loser here, Adam is going to do just fine, and lets face it, it was priceless to see Kris’ expression when they announced him the winner, Go Kris and God Bless

Thinking Twice | 6/9/2009, 3:41 pm EST

After hearing Kris sing the National Anthem (in person) I’m thinking twice about buying his music. He’s a nice guy and all, but I, and many others, was bored with his rendition.

Helena | 6/9/2009, 9:28 pm EST

Thanks for keeping us updated about Kris. I’m one of those who are anxiously waiting for his album to come out. He’s a one-of-a-kind artist and listening to his music has a calming effect on me. I love his interpretation of the anthem, simple yet beautiful. He’s also cute, that’s a bonus :-)

Jessie | 6/9/2009, 9:35 pm EST

I think Kris Allen’s fans have been showing their support to Kris all over. Inspite of No Boundaries being a lame song, it peaked at No. 11 in the Billboard Top 100 with Heartless at No. 16. Adam’s Mad World was only at No. 19, now No. 44. Even in Asia, NB has been topping the charts. Just google it.

I love Adam as well and I don’t like comparing them because they are too different, personality and music-wise. I just can’t help it when Adam fans question our support for Kris. We voted for him and he’s now American Idol. We’re buying his album as well.

Anonymous | 6/9/2009, 9:46 pm EST

@Kittycomere:

Speak for yourself! Still sore about Adam losing to Kris? Grow up and get a job! And note this: Adam had a crush on Kris during the AI season. Are you going to cry now?

Def Leppard Fan4Life | 6/10/2009, 10:05 am EST

I am so confused. Nearly everyone likes Kris – that’s cool – even Adam likes Kris and respects his music and has said so. However, people are absolutely mad, crazy, raving about Adam. It is like chalk and cheese reading fan comments about these two. So how is it possible that Kris got the majority of votes that night? Really this is not adding up!

ME | 6/10/2009, 3:46 pm EST

Def Leppard Fan4Life: Why are you confused? You say yourself that nearly everyone likes Kris, and that just translated easily into tons of votes and the win. Many people are crazy about Adam, but they are more vocal than they are numerous (i.e., they are very loud in their support, inconsiderate, disrespectful to others, etc., but their numbers pale in comparison to those who support Kris). Also, Adam has the curiosity/image/ presence thing that Kris doesn’t play to. The media have eaten Adam up, and those who are not rabid Adam fans are to the eye-roll stage when we hear the same stories repeated on the air over and over about him. “He’s gay. He had a crush on Kris.” Okay, big deal! Move on….

Kris’s pre-Idol self-produced CD “Brand New Shoes” is just great, one of the best indie releases I’ve heard in years. The guy is so talented, so likeable, I wish him all the success and more, talents like that deserve it.

Kris is Cool | 6/15/2009, 2:37 am EST

This guy is totally cool! I never watch American Idol because of the judges. But the show has produced real talents in the past. This Kris dude is no different. He’s a class act. Saw him singing Heartless, he rocked!

mtlfan | 6/18/2009, 12:49 am EST

From his first appearance on the show, I have been a fan!!! Looking forward to his first album!!!
Kris is kick awesome!!
