MGMT, “Closer” [Live NIN Cover]
Not a note is changed in this spot-on (and, apparently, live) Nine Inch Nails cover, but the song’s overriding sentiment somehow sounds way creepier coming from these dudes than it ever did coming from Trent Reznor.

Various Artists, Morrissey Covers
[Music Slut]
The Music Slut’s ongoing tribute to Moz on the honor of his 50th birthday continues, with a string of covers — a new one every Friday! — that range from faithful to far-out. May we humbly suggest you start with Exit Clov’s bright and charming take on “Sing Your Life”?

Theophilus London & Lykke Li, “Computer Love” [Kraftwerk Cover]
“My Facebook status says I’m sad,” announces London at the start of this appropriately minimal and electro Kraftwerk cover, officially nabbing him the prize for lamest hip-hop shout out of the last 10 years. Dude, why not
just holler “Five Dollar Foot Long!” afterwards and call it a day?

Black Eyed Peas ft. 50 Cent, “Let the Beat Rock” [Boys Noize Remix]
OK, yeah, fine, we posted a Black Eyed Peas song. We all have our moments of weakness. will.i.am’s flow is still, um, “interesting,” and 50 sounds like he’s delivering his cliché-riddled verse while flipping through a magazine, but Boys Noize’s screwball electronic backing track somehow salvages the endeavor.

The Oldham Brothers, “Wouldn’t It Be Nice” [Beach Boys Cover]
Because when we think of the perfect choice to replicate Brian Wilson’s angelic harmonies, the first names that come to mind are lonesome croakers Will, Ned and Paul Oldham. Surprisingly, they pull it off, retaining the
song’s fragility while branding it with their own kind of weird.

The MGMT cover has “I wanna fuck you like a dinosaur” at the end. Beautiful. Absolutely beautiful.

I can see big things from this group. They have the arrogance of a pop star yet can reject the mainstream. Their future could be quite interesting. If they can keep their sound fresh, they can continue to make good stuff…
