Kris Allen Beats Adam Lambert on Star-Packed “American Idol” Finale

Adam Lambert was the rock star on American Idol’s grand finale last night, but Kris Allen was the winner, walking off with the Season Eight title after a two-hour extravaganza featuring the Black Eyed Peas, Cyndi Lauper, Santana, Queen Latifah, Rod Stewart, Steve Martin, Keith Urban, Lionel Richie, David Cook, Jason Mraz, Kiss and Queen. A record-breaking number of votes — close to 100 million — were cast via phone and text Tuesday night, however the show failed to reveal the margin between Allen and Lambert (last year 12 million votes separated Davids Cook and Archuleta). That missing piece of information has left many viewers curious and Lambert devotees suspicious as Idol wraps its most exciting season in years. (Relive the night in Rob Sheffield’s live blog and look back at the night, in photos).

A bizarre array of celebrities filled the audience (Janice Dickinson playing air mandolin! Heather Locklear standing around!) as Idol welcomed back its Top 13 for a series of awkward group numbers that, as usual, served as a reminder that the talent sent home before the Top Five weren’t really the nation’s most talented after all.

Both Allen and Lambert stood out in the finale, but the two performances with the most juice both featured Adam: He strapped on cage-like studded shoulder pads Brandon Flowers would covet and sang Kiss’ “Beth,” then joined the face-painted legends for “Detroit Rock City” and “Rock & Roll All Nite.” As Gene Simmons’ tongue lashed beside him, Lambert punctuated the latter with a blistering scream from deep within his velvet goldmine. Later, Lambert and Allen stood together to sing “We Are the Champions” with Queen; at the song’s end, guitarist Brian May — who’s in the market for a new frontman — had a few words with Lambert, the man RS credits with saving the Idol franchise.

Cook took the stage first, hitting some remarkable notes on power ballad “Permanent” in honor of his brother Adam, who recently died from cancer. Then the duets began: Lil Rounds joined Queen Latifah on the rapper-actress-singer’s new single “Cue the Rain,” a hot disco-pop song that swipes the bassline from Talk Talk’s “It’s My Life.” Allison Iraheta and Cyndi Lauper traded verses on “Time After Time.” Anoop Desai and Alex Grace shared the spotlight with Mraz, Santana accompanied the cast on “Smooth” and Allen crooned with Urban on a strong rendition of “Kiss a Girl.”

Lionel Richie welcomed Danny Gokey for a medley that included “Hello” while Cook, who reinvented the track to great success last year, looked on. Rod Stewart made his way through “Maggie May.” And in perhaps the oddest team-up, roughneck Michael Sarver and songbird Megan Corkrey tackled “Pretty Flowers” with funnyman Martin on banjo. Fergie helped the ladies with “Glamorous” (no one-handed cartwheels this year for Mrs. Duhamel) and the Black Eyed Peas stormed the stage with their hit single “Boom Boom Pow,” which featured either the longest expletive in history or a five-second technical difficulty.

Producers wisely decided to bring back three notable singers who didn’t make the finals for “Golden Idol Awards”: theatrical comic Normund Gentle (who did “And I Am Telling You” from Dreamgirls), Bikini Girl Katrina Darrell (who had a brief sing-off with Kara DioGuardi on Mariah Carey’s “Vision of Love” that ended with DioGuardi baring her own bikini-clad bod — for charity, of course, and not shameless self-promotion) and drama queen Tatiana Del Toro (who was annoying while trying to make light of her annoying persona). Seacrest got his best line of the night in while announcing Darrell’s return: “I was going to ask you what’s new, but I think I know.”

After two hours of pomp, it was time for the results and Seacrest proclaimed Allen the winner. The low key 23-year-old Allen’s mouth dropped open and he said, “Adam deserves this” as the two embraced in a genuine hug. He was rushed into the maligned coronation song “No Boundaries,” co-written by DioGuardi, and the credits rolled.

So what’s next for Lambert, long considered Season Eight’s favorite — and was his defeat the result of playing it too safe Tuesday night (or our other Ways Lambert Could Lose)? Find out where we could see Adam next, and flip through photos of the show’s glam-rock sex god.

It is so pathetic to see Adam Lambert is embraced more in the rest of the world except his own country America. Adam already has a HUGE fan base from Europe going all the way down to Asia. That is in fact the majority of the world. America once again became a slave to their conservative ideals.Even those voters who voted for Kris Allen just because they didn’t want Adam to win, know it darn well that Adam by far was the better artist. Adam is the World Idol, let Chris be the American one. LOL.

StrummerJones | 5/21/2009, 8:58 am EST

Don’t complain too much, people. Adam still gets the same record deal and everything. He even gets the honor of No Boundaries not being his first single.

newyorker | 5/21/2009, 9:01 am EST

America prefers honesty and musicianship versus a lot of gimmick and vocal calisthenics.

Stupid | 5/21/2009, 9:01 am EST

Do you really think that the only way Kris one was because Adam was gay? Thats ignorance right there, if what your saying was true than Adam wouldn’t have made it past 8 place. If America was hateful he would have been gone A LONG time ago. But no they liked him for his singing and voted for him because of that. He made it to runner-up. So No America is not hateful. Your just ignorant. Kris Won because of songs like “ain’t no sunshine” “SWHFHM” “heartless” and “falling Slowly” so get off your stupid high horse and realise that people actually liked Kris more and voted for him because of that fact. Kris Allen has fans that are not just christian or tweens. Just because you like Adams style does not mean that the whole world has to like it to

buddha | 5/21/2009, 9:03 am EST

Basic life lesson is to always be true to who you are.

Rddean | 5/21/2009, 9:04 am EST

Chris Allen, the NEW Taylor Hicks. An incredibly average singer who will sell dozens of albums. America loves average, no suprise Chris won. On the bright side, Adam won’t be tied as tightly to American Idol producers strings.

Susan L | 5/21/2009, 9:04 am EST

Please keep us up to date on what Adam is doing–he is phenomenal! I could not care less at this point about anything else related to American Idol. I only watched to see him. I’m pissed that America made such a poor choice, but glad to get my Tuesday/Wednesday nights back from that horror show.

Mississippi Kay | 5/21/2009, 9:05 am EST

The vote outcome on American Idol doesn’t represent America, it represents a small percentage of Americans each voting thousands of times. And, in this case, the more popular contestant lost.

Adam is a star and will do fine. Kris will fade away after some moderate success. But I think this signals the end of AI years of US TV dominance. They keep saying it’s a singing contest but they proved that it is just another reality show. A reality show where the producers can enforce voting rules or not, and were a few thousand people in Arkansas can generate millions of votes.

s | 5/21/2009, 9:05 am EST

adam deserved to win from day one…no one could match up to his singing prowess….this comp is no longer abt singing..
its d biggest upset ever

momof2boys | 5/21/2009, 9:05 am EST

I agree with Sontana. Adam also has a huge fan base in Canada. I think people are so narrow minded that they would judge a person based on sexuality instead of talent. At least Adam won’t have to sing that lame song No Boundries.

Patti | 5/21/2009, 9:05 am EST

Kristian Conservatives did it again. When will these people go away.

Embarrassed | 5/21/2009, 9:06 am EST

America should be embarrassed demonstrating it’s stupidity and ignorance. At a time when the world is looking to the US for leadership, it is clearly apparent by it’s citizen population why it is no longer a world leader.

kitty | 5/21/2009, 9:06 am EST

I am from Japan & we love Adam Lambert here too !!! Looking forward to getting his CD&DVD ! :)

mexican | 5/21/2009, 9:07 am EST

mexico loves adam!!! shame we cannot vote :(

Rhonda | 5/21/2009, 9:08 am EST

Why doesn’t this write-up shock me? Of course you would insinuate that Lambert fans would be suspicious of the voting and only give accolades to perfomances by him. Kris Allen and Keith Urban were phenomenal. And more credit is due the remaining Idol participants whom had a truckload of talent. And news flash Rolling Stone … America has spoken!! Even though you and the judges thought we needed another politically-correct exhibitionist as our American icon, we chose humility, genuine character and sweet vocals over showmanship. Yes, Adam certainly gives a great performance, but Kris Allen has won the hearts of America. Can you relate? Doubt it!!

Texas Girl | 5/21/2009, 9:08 am EST

I am proud to be an American. There is nothing wrong with conservative American ideals. Please explain this to me: if American ideals are so terrible, why do so many people from other countries leave everything to move to America?

I believe the A.I. voters got it right this time. Kris Allen was genuinely the better talent–extremely creative, an awesome singer, vast musical knowledge, and enough skill to play at least two instruments.

On another note, when I listen to the A.I. competition, I often do not even watch the TV, only LISTEN to the music and the singing, so I can form a very objective opinion to answer the question–who would I rather listen to on the radio or on my iPod–a shrieking wail or a soulful melody???

DCguy | 5/21/2009, 9:08 am EST

Sonata- you comments are dangerous. As a country that just elected its first black president- we are not a “slave” to our conservative ideas. Get over yourself. Adam was over the top…

Anonymous | 5/21/2009, 9:08 am EST

Adam clearly deserved to win. America, once again, displayed its Puritanical, homophobic side. Well, at least we got it right last November and voted for Obama – which is far more important.

Ron Levitan | 5/21/2009, 9:08 am EST

This is the best thing that could happen to Lambert and his career….not to be locked in as an “American Idol.”

getoverit | 5/21/2009, 9:09 am EST

Who cares what the rest of the world thinks about music? We are the ones who invented rock n roll, country, gospel, blues, and jazz. We really don’t need dictation on musical matters. I also don’t believe there is anything particularly conservative about picking a singer-songwriter-musician. I’ve heard Kris Allen being slammed for being a clean cut christian and conversely as a guitar-strumming granola. Which is it? I think both are a case of sour grapes.

Cindy | 5/21/2009, 9:09 am EST

The voting system for American Idol is terrible. Only A limited number of votes per phone should be allowed. 100,000,000 votes what a joke. My votes didn’t count. I could not dial by hand faster than the power dialers.

PVG | 5/21/2009, 9:10 am EST

Stupid vote system is why you get this kind of results. The winner is intended to be the one with more votes, no the better singer. You can program your computer to send a thousand votes in one hour, instead of the program receiving one vote (mine) for an specific person. At home, 3 of us believed Adam was the winner, being my daughter the only one for Kris, but she spent 2 hours texting her votes. So, a 75%/25% turns into a 1%/99%. Get it?

twothousandone | 5/21/2009, 9:10 am EST

Now the comment about Queen having a few words with Adam after performing together is extremely interesting. Not that I believe Freddie Mercury could ever be replaced, BUT I think that Adam’s vocal talents, and range would be an awesome match to continue to pay tribute to Freddie, now that is a show I would definately want to attend. Which is new for me since I am such a die hard Freddie Mercury fan. My best wishes to Adam whichever path he chooses. Awesome, awesome guy!!!!!

Angie | 5/21/2009, 9:10 am EST

Adam only seems better because people are distracted by all of his dramatic staging and that scream. Can Adam sing? Yes but his theatresque quality started to become a problem over time. Need proof? His rendition of the (all be it terrible) song “No Boundries” had sooo much vibrato in it that it was impossible to understand. Kris, though a very low key kind of guy, has a strong, melodic voice that is marketable right now. Unfortunatley the whole sexual orientation thing is distracting from people focusing on what matters: Adam has the flash and the flare for a Broadway stage but not what is neccessary to crank out Top 40 hits.

Katydid | 5/21/2009, 9:10 am EST

In response to Stupid, please learn how to spell. American Idol is supposed to be a show about talent. Not that Kris Allen doesn’t have talent, but no contestant ever in Idol history, has generated such excitement as Adam Lambert. He’ll be a major star.

Katydid | 5/21/2009, 9:10 am EST

ro | 5/21/2009, 9:11 am EST

I will follow Adam’s career and buy every CD he records. I will never watch AI again. The most talented person lost the first spot but gained millions of fans. He is a winner in my eyes.

micky | 5/21/2009, 9:11 am EST

You would have to be dead in the senses not to feel the hate in people to vote so many times so the other won’t win. Of course it was religion based. Poor Chris was humiliated when they announced his win and will have to live with that the rest of his life. P.S. AI is dead so thanks for the double wammy.

Anonymous | 5/21/2009, 9:12 am EST

,.,.we all know ADAm deserve it,.!!

Doc | 5/21/2009, 9:13 am EST

Let’s stop calling American Idol a “singing Competition”. It is a popularity and morality contest. Kris is a decent singer and a boy next door kind of guy but as far as ability and talent, Adam is by far more polished a performer than Kris will ever be. This should have been the biggest blowout in Idol history.

Steven | 5/21/2009, 9:13 am EST

Adam was the better vocalist, but Kris was the better musician. It has nothing to do with conservative ideals…it has to do with completely different fan bases. Kris pulled in the preteen and teenage girl vote, which has proved a force in America for a very long time. Music trends live and die by that demographic here. Sad but true. I believe Adam should have won but I am in no way suprised at the result. Plus all the talk of Kris being the “Dark Horse” pushed him up… all-the-while, the Adam Lambert backlash began before the season was over. (EW and Ms. Perry had a hand in that one).

Babylove | 5/21/2009, 9:13 am EST

Adam was geat and wildo even better in the future.
Adam ur a awesome person and didnt diserve to lose, byt u wil always sta a winner in your hearts.

Jackie | 5/21/2009, 9:14 am EST

Well, no surprise here. Adam SHOULD have won, based on his far superior musical talent. BUT: yet again, America’s PURITANICAL submits its squeaky-clean votes for Kris. I am again nauseated by the hypocritical, loud-mouthed, under-educated, narrow-minded conservative bores that insist that America remain in the Victorian Mentality… Blechhhh…. !!

Amanda | 5/21/2009, 9:14 am EST

The majority just preferred Kris over Adam. Period. I personally love Adam and think that he is the most talented contestant that has ever been on the show. But I don’t represent the entire population of America. Everyone is entitled to their own preference of music and Kris just captured that for most Americans. It is what it is.

Missy | 5/21/2009, 9:16 am EST

Adam was robbed. I know he will still be a superstar but I am very tearful about the injustice of it all. I tried voting for him Tuesday night for 4 hours and only got in maybe 40-50 votes. I don’t have AT&T cell service so I had to use me land line. I feel stupid voting now because my hours of hitting redial didn’t do squat and was a waste of time. I truly font have a vote in this show if a few thousand people can cast millions. This is unfair!

Cassiopea | 5/21/2009, 9:16 am EST

Apparently, America wants Jell-o, strawbery flavored. It’s tragic to see an incredible artist been rejected like this, but obviously he will have a brilliant (an global) career. That doesn’t make it better, though.

Sonata | 5/21/2009, 9:16 am EST

DCGuy if Adam Lambert wasn’t judged in that manner he would have won it by a landslide. This is incomparable to the presidential election. Gokey voters voted Adam off not because they wanted Kris to win. We all know the background of Gokey voters. There are conservatives over there who are appalled by this result but they are in the minority. Kris is a cute guy with some talent but Adam is a prodigy. You will see whose career will be shooting to superstardom in the coming 2 years.

Karen | 5/21/2009, 9:17 am EST

I think it will be better for Adam in the long run…no one telling him what kind of music to make. I really think the reason Kris won is all those tweens. God knows that like to text. I was a Danny fan so it really was no surprise for Kris to win. Usually the “best” vocal does not win.

Vada | 5/21/2009, 9:17 am EST

I voted for Kris, because I love Kris. No other reason. I love his smooth as silk voice, and his mad song arranging skills.

I think that both Kris and Adam will be hugely successful, so there is no reason for the hatred that one side is spewing.

The music industry is plenty big enough for both artists.

Laurie | 5/21/2009, 9:18 am EST

I am disappointed that the best singer did not win. I do believe Adam will be more successful than Kris despite this. Another fact is I won’t ever watch AI again. I had never watched it until Adam and after this BS, forget it. I can’t wait to see a CD from Adam and as soon as he is touring I will be first in line to buy a ticket to his show. His performance with Kiss and Queen was awesome, he is a rare talent and humble and easy on the eyes. I could care less what his sexual preference is and I don’t believe in this day and age that is why he did not win. I believe it was just enthusiastic children who had nothing better to do than vote a thousand times. I do like Kris but Adam was the true winner. Even Kris looked embarrassed that he won. Good luck to both men.

AF Ashli | 5/21/2009, 9:18 am EST

I agree that Adam will do just as well as Kris, he deserved to win but, all the fans of Gokey I believe voted for Kris because they didn’t want Lambert to win, as I know many people did.
Adam will be a rockstar so there are no worries there.

VICKY | 5/21/2009, 9:18 am EST

ADAM ROCKED MY WORLD.HE WAS FANTASTIC LAST NIGHT. HE OUTSANG AND OUTPERFORMED EVERYONE ALL SEASON.HE IS THE ONLY ONE I VOTED FOR ALL SEASON.HE WAS THE ONLY ONE NOT AFRAID TO BE DIFFERENT. HE STAYED TRUE TO HIMSELF.AFTER LAST NIGHT, I’M DONE WITH IDOL.IT’S A JOKE. ADAM, YOU HAVE A FAN FOR LIFE. CANT WAIT FOR THE TOUR. YOU’RE THE ONLY REASON I’M GOING. THIS IS MY FIRST TOUR AND WILL BE MY LAST. I’LL BE WATCHING FOR YOUR CD’S AND YOUR CONCERTS.STAY TRUE TO YOURSELF, DON’T EVER CHANGE. YOU HAVE MY HEART.

Anonymous | 5/21/2009, 9:19 am EST

Congratulations Kris,I am happy for you & I wanted you to win, my name is debbie Durham from Prescott Ontario, Canada

Nicole | 5/21/2009, 9:19 am EST

Adam deserved to win. Even Kris said that. This is so disappointing. America got it wrong again!

GNaekel | 5/21/2009, 9:20 am EST

My love for Kris Allen was that he is a true musician. To me a musician plays musical instruments as well as using their voice- Kris was the whole package- a nice and humble boy- who never thought he would win. He will do just fine.

ollioop | 5/21/2009, 9:20 am EST

Last nites Idol was a total farce. Idol has finally proved what I have always thought…its not about singing or talent……its a popularity contest. I for one dont plan on watching anymore idol shows. This was a terrible upset. Whether you like Adam or not he is already a star and should have won. Kris had a few good songs but he paled in the light of Adam. It was an embarrassing finale…even Kris thought he should not have won. Oh well today is another day and time will tell who goes on to sardom

Anonymous | 5/21/2009, 9:20 am EST

I agree that Kris won largely because of anti-Adam votes than he did votes based on the actual competition part of this show. It has become a popularity contest, so Idol has to stop promoting it as a singing competition. The reason he made it past 8th place, Stupid, is because the homophobic vote was being split between Kris and Danny – once Danny got voted off, those homophobic votes went towards Kris. The whack voting system has to change if this is going to be a fair challenge in the future.

GNaekel | 5/21/2009, 9:20 am EST

My love for Kris Allen was that he is a true musician. To me a musician plays musical instruments as well as using their voice- Kris was the whole package- a nice and humble boy- who never thought he would win. He will do just fine.

Anonymous | 5/21/2009, 9:20 am EST

I was glad Kris won because American Idol is all about finding undiscovered talent. And Adam Lambert’s talent was already found because he had been on stage since he was 10 years old. Kris Allen never had that chance at stardom, which is why Kris Allen DESERVED to win. Adam was already spoiled with fame from his younger years.

Girlygirl | 5/21/2009, 9:21 am EST

Adam’s loss was crushingly disappointing to me. It’s so rare to see and hear someone so talented, and for him to lose makes me wonder about the authenticity of the voting. I still think the wrong David won last season, and I have no doubt that the wrong guy won this season. So what’s the point in watching? No more for me.

Morgan | 5/21/2009, 9:21 am EST

I think you guys don’t understand. It didn’t matter if Adam won or lost, he is still going to have a bigger career than what American Idol could have given him. I personally like Kris, and was glad that he recieved the title. I don’t think it matters how many octaves Adam can screech out… But I would have loved for Allison to be in the finals.

stephen b | 5/21/2009, 9:21 am EST

Adam Lost because of the multiple votes by the teeni boopers from Arkansas, nothing to do with Christians….Adam Rocked, Chris was good too…but lets face it, Adam is a True Performer

Art | 5/21/2009, 9:21 am EST

Loved Kris but I have never heard the vocal that Adam produced. His over all singing quality is so far above Kris. But, the voting is questionable and I know my son spent two hours casting for Kris. I was only able to get through five times for multiple dialing. But, both are very talented, and the ones who had the time to do multiple votes won.

Debbie | 5/21/2009, 9:22 am EST

I find it amazing that after reading many blogs and seeing many different polls that most people say they voted for Adam. Whats up with that. I do believe Adam will be around for the long haul. I believe a lot of Americans always vote for the underdog. Everyone knows Adam will be a huge star and that a quite guy like Kris needs the title. Both are great guys, but I think Kris will fade a way. I am not some goofy teenager either, with a crush. I just know talent.

Steelers Fan | 5/21/2009, 9:22 am EST

I think Adam does have talent, but if you are going for the american “idol” you need the whole package. I thought that Kris was the whole package. A sweet, very modest, loves his family kind of guy on top of crooner sytle singing. People are trying to make this about Adams sexual orientation, but people need to realize that they sang two differant kinds of music. I prefer the music that Kris sang. He won, nothing can change that, be happy for this guy. He deserved it for his style of music just as mich as Adam would have if he would have won it for his. I wish the best for both of them. I thought they both were great.

Kelli | 5/21/2009, 9:23 am EST

I think American Idol got it right. Kris has a beautiful voice that resonate to more of the general public. Best of Luck to you. You did deserve to win. Start teaming up with good songwriter.

Kelli | 5/21/2009, 9:23 am EST

JC | 5/21/2009, 9:23 am EST

Can’t you people just be nice! They are both great artists. it came down to personal preference. We will see Adam Lambert with the role of Mister Mistoffelees in Cats and Kris Allen on the stage at the American Music Awards! Kris is great without all the glitz thats what gives him staying power and worthy of being a winner!

Texan | 5/21/2009, 9:23 am EST

For all of you Adam Lambert fans please remember what Simon said a few weeks ago: For all of you that love Adam, there are just as many fans that can’t stand him! I can’t stand Adam Lambert. His shrieking is not singing. Kris Allen is a great artist and will be more successful than most of you are giving him credit for. At least I will buy his CD, where you would have to pay me to buy a Lambert CD.

ontario canada | 5/21/2009, 9:24 am EST

Adam didn’t win, BUT, he will go down in history, akin to Elvis Presley, micheal Jackson and the like. He will set new boundaries of talent, Adam is not just a singer , as is Chris, He is an artist. It’s the artists that break records, bring newness and originality to the music world, You may not like Adam’s style BUT. he will be remembered above all else

Steelers Fan | 5/21/2009, 9:25 am EST

Also, you are not a true American Idol Watcher / Fan if you cant spell Kris’s name right. It was Kris not Chris.

Leaha | 5/21/2009, 9:26 am EST

Wow I was shocked that Adam lost, I miss him already, I voted for him 3 times, as many times as I could get through in a 3 hour time span. Get off the right wing conservative Christian crap, I am a right winger and Adams alternative lifestyle has nothing to do with my views on his talent. I also have a son who is bi, which goes against my beliefs but I love him with all my heart and so does God so you left wingers need to stop spreading YOUR hate, and get up off of usRight wing conservatist) because truly you dont know us you only know what you are spoon fed through the
media.GO GO GO GO ADAM I LOVE YOU.
from a 47 year old mother of a bi son.

Sappho | 5/21/2009, 9:26 am EST

Kris Allen is way too bland to be interesting for very long. Adam is not only the most talented contestant but a good role model for any young or old person. I celebrate his commitment to portraying his true identity and think that honesty and bravery help make him the star that he is. Adam, you are the best!

LSR2345 | 5/21/2009, 9:26 am EST

It’s hard for me to believe that America loved Kris more and that’s why he won, especially considering that 38 million of his votes came from Arkansas. Perhaps they should consider calling Kris the 2009 Arkansas Idol. That was an example of power voting at its finest.

brooklynyankeeso | 5/21/2009, 9:26 am EST

Anyone who voted for kris is an idiot or just doesnt know what talent is because adam lambert is in a league with axel rose and robert plant even michael jackson and a little elvis you dont see talent like that everyday. america is so ignorant. this is how we ened up with obama as presedent leave it up to america do make all the mistakes bc they america is stupid thats wy this country is fallin to pieces i mean if you think kris was a better singer, that tells me what kind of person you are and go retake the iq test ( try to break 100) and get your ears checked adam is one of a kind musical god with the vioce a an angeled demon

Dreamer | 5/21/2009, 9:27 am EST

Obama. Adam. Could this be? Nahhh… We (Europeans) are relieved that America chose not to be a better Europe. Thank you!

Anonymous | 5/21/2009, 9:28 am EST

If Adam is such a huge star around the world, he had no business in AI. It’s supposed to be undiscovered talent. I for one am glad Kris won! We’ll take Kris, and the rest of the world can have Adam… God Bless America.

Beverly in Cali | 5/21/2009, 9:28 am EST

Finish college Kris and invest your winnings well. Because in five years when Adam is rocking the world you’ll be long forgotten.

Rick | 5/21/2009, 9:29 am EST

Well Sonata that seems a little dramatic. “America once again became a slave to their conservative ideals”! I do think Adam has more talent! What an incredible talent he is. I was shocked that he didn’t win. But I voted for Kris because his style is more to my liking. I listen to many European artists who style is quite similar to Kris. I love them all! Congrats to both.

noboundriessux | 5/21/2009, 9:29 am EST

I love adam lambert been a fan since day 1. thank baby jesus he doesn’t have to sing that lame song hes way better than that. as for kris hes a pretty talented kid I like him hes just not nearly as talented.

Buddy | 5/21/2009, 9:30 am EST

Adam – the World Idol… I like that. I actually like both Adam and Kris. Just that I think Adam is the better singer/artist. Adam is a legend and he rocks. No doubt he can rock the whole world!

momof2boys | 5/21/2009, 9:30 am EST

I think Idol sould think seriously about allowing 1 vote per landline. The way the voting system is no true talent could win. It all has to do with who can text or redial the fastest.
Wake up time American Idol!!!

momof2boys | 5/21/2009, 9:30 am EST

I think Idol sould think seriously about allowing 1 vote per landline. The way the voting system is no true talent could win. It all has to do with who can text or redial the fastest.
Wake up time American Idol!!!

Adele | 5/21/2009, 9:31 am EST

I am shocked!!! Americans, you need to wake up and take the cellphones away from your minor midgets with hormone problems! They sinked Adam’s ship last night! 10% person, 90% talent! Kris is cool but not the best. Sorry! How many times have you not voted for the best person? Hudson? Daughtry? Adam?

brooklynyankeeso | 5/21/2009, 9:32 am EST

oh and steelers fan who cares how you spell kris or chris whatever he wasnt even good enough for top 5 aliison was better than him and shes 17 please ADAM IS THE BEST OF THIS GENERATION and soon you will see that I MEAN KISS AND QUEEN WOULD HAVE NEVER SHOWED UP IF ADAM WASNT THERE END OF STORY THEY CAME TO SEE TRUE TALENT THAT THEY GREW UP WITH

Jackie | 5/21/2009, 9:32 am EST

DON’T YOU KRIS FANS GET IT?!?!? THE UNDER-EDUCATED, LOUD-MOUTHED, PURITANICAL ONCE AGAIN VOTE FOR THE SQUEAKY-CLEAN, IN AN ONGOING EFFORT TO KEEPY AMERICANS IN THE VICTORIAN MENTALITY… NAUSEATING !!!

nh | 5/21/2009, 9:32 am EST

I’ve never watched an AI finale. This one I did because I was drawn in by Adam Lambert’s voice & personality. The star studded performances were just icing on the cake. I was very shocked Lambert did not win, but not surprised-votes are a tool that can be used for many purposes. As for the music & career futures of these two, time will tell what happens.

stephanieg | 5/21/2009, 9:33 am EST

It kills me how people down all conservative Christians. I am a conservative Christian who really liked Adam but I don’t like his style of singing so if I had voted (which I didn’t)I would have voted for Kris. All of my other conservative Christian friends did not vote either so don’t blame us because your guy didn’t win. Adam seemed to be possibly one of the nicest people ever on AI and he was very gracious with his loss. Maybe you should take a hint from him. I agree that he’s better off not to have won. I like the way Kris sings. Those of you complaining, did you even vote?

Bill | 5/21/2009, 9:33 am EST

America can’t even vote in a decent president (lets not forget BUSH).. let alone recognizing anybody with talent – Sure Kris Allen has talent, but he does NOT stand out and will like the rest of the idols, get lost in the dust. Someone said Kris Allen should WIN, so all of AMERICA followed like a pack of sheep.. PLAIN AND SIMPLE.

LISA | 5/21/2009, 9:34 am EST

I think it’s probably that the voters can’t handle someone who has some personality and unique style, that might be little different than the average boy next door. They obviously didn’t vote based on singing ability – if they had Adam and Danny would be the top 2 and Adam would’ve won. Chris is probably a nice person – but he can’t sing any better than the others that were in the top 12 – Adam though was # 1 the whole way through the competition, Danny was a distant 2nd and Chris was down there somewhere lower….

Seriously, I am not watching it next year-because the show is clearly bogus. Poor Chris – I do not even think he wanted to win – he knew he couldn’t hold a candle to Adam’s voice. Oh well, yet more proof that life is NOT fair.

Pre-results, didn’t you LOVE the show? I was really impressed with the bands/singers that came out to perform. Adam did unbelievably well with Kiss and with Queen, didn’t you think so? Seriously – that’s it for me; I am not going to invest my time and emotion in a show that is based on the votes of pre-teen and homophobic America.

Sam | 5/21/2009, 9:34 am EST

Surprise surprise that those who dislike Adam should be from the south end of America…

It was a VOCAL talent show, not about who’s nicest or has the best morals.

Just when you think America’s progressed people reveal the color of their necks again.

Alh872 | 5/21/2009, 9:35 am EST

I am not going to watch American Idol in years to come because of bad voting by America. First with Taylor Hicks and Chris Daughtry. Duh! We all know who was better there and now with Kris Allen and Adam Lambert. We all know who was way better. Kris will fade away just like Taylor Hicks did, so that’s a good thing.

Mas | 5/21/2009, 9:35 am EST

Though I’m not a fan of Adam, I do believe he’s the better of the two

Sylvie from Canada | 5/21/2009, 9:35 am EST

I was chocked to see that Adam did not win. I thought…what’s wrong with Americans???? Can’t you see Adam is 10 times the singer Kris will ever be???

Jackie | 5/21/2009, 9:35 am EST

EXCUSE THE TYPO — “… IN AN ONGOING EFFORT TO KEEP AMERICANS IN THE VICTORIAN MENTALITY… NAUSEATING!!!”

Lou | 5/21/2009, 9:37 am EST

Adam Lambert is as Paula said an ICON. He is a genius when it comes to talent and entertainment. No American Idol show to date has been so entertaining and it is because of Adam. So thank you Adam for that and for bringing it. You are truly a star shining brighter than anyone that has stepped on that stage. I have enjoyed your every performance and I look forward to going to one of your concerts and owning a CD or DVD created by you.

American Idol??? That is the last time I will watch that show and all of it’s bull from voters. Mostly because America can’t pick the real American idol. Also I believe that show is named incorrectly. “Looking for the boy OR girl nextdoor” may be a better choice for a title and an added caption of “with or without talent.”

I don’t believe you will ever see icons such as Queen or Kiss ever step on that stage again. Mark my words. I believe they thought Adam had won. They were there for him.

We all know Adam is the real winner. America seems to get it wrong 9 times out of 10. Look at when they chose Rueben Studdard and Taylor Hicks as their picks. That sent a message about not picking the talent right there.

stephen b | 5/21/2009, 9:37 am EST

38 million votes from Arkansas, Wow, that state only has a population around 2.5 million, Adam is the True Winner, Consistant throughout this Season…Was the best every week….and I’m Disappointed because he deserves the distiction of being the “American Idol”…to me it’s a matter of princple…some will say that they are both winners, but winning is important…don’t think so, just ask Bo Bice…

Julie | 5/21/2009, 9:37 am EST

I’m no teeny bopper. 51 years old and always a true rocker. But I still voted for Kris. Adam has an amazing voice and will make a good front man for someone. But Kris has so many talents. He can sing, write songs, play music. He sounds so professional. I will buy his music but will have to wait and see what Adam comes up with.

Jackie | 5/21/2009, 9:37 am EST

BY THE WAY, PEOPLE: I AM IN THE SOUTH, SO PLEASE DON’T SLAM ALL SOUTHERNERS FOR BEING BACKWARD, AND RED-NECKED MINDED !! ALTHOUGH, THERE ARE TOO MANY, ADMITTEDLY, LOL.

Dawn in Canada | 5/21/2009, 9:39 am EST

How in the world did Kris Allen win – yeah, he might have a decent voice, but has no stage presence or charisma!!!! ADAM ROCKS!!!! That guy can sign ANYTHING and bring new life to it!!! Look at Tracks of My Tears, Ring of Fire (which I absolutely LOVED how he did), Mad World……what the heck is wrong with Americans!!! After last night’s performance with Queen, maybe they will reform and starting touring with Adam singing lead…..reincarnated Freddie Mercury?

IconOrIdol | 5/21/2009, 9:39 am EST

Sonata, I have to agree. I’m an American and I am embarrassed by America’s “safe” choice. I do, however, take comfort in finding that I am one of many Americans (slowly but surely building to a majority) who have the same feelings of embarrassment and disappointment. No disrespect to Kris. He’s not entirely void of talent, but there is simply no comparison. Poor guy, even he knows that Adam “deserved this.” For myself, as the initial shock starts to fade, I find myself pleased that Adam has been spared the shackles of AI and will not be bound to a looong contract with them (Is it 5 yrs for the winner!?!). I’m even happier that he won’t be associated with “No Boundaries” – wow, what a terrible song. The truth is that Adam is bigger than AI, and as your post shows, he is also bigger than America. His American fans have given him the more accurate title of “American Icon” – and I love that you refer to him as the “World Idol” because he really is. Those of us that love him do so with everything we’ve got because he has amazing talent, enough said. I look forward to sharing in his future with the rest of the world. Go Adam!! Diversity is not to be feared but embraced!!

Justin | 5/21/2009, 9:39 am EST

Its all well planned. This is gonna be like Ruben/Clay – with Clay making the most sales and records.

It’s sad coz Kris will experience the backlash. Remember, winning American Idol does not mean you will be successful. Think Taylor Hicks and Ruben Studdard.

Heather | 5/21/2009, 9:40 am EST

You know. I didn’t care either way which one won. I liked them both. I was leaning more towards Kris than towards Adam. Here’s the thing. Adam is an amazing vocalist. But, he is NOT everyone’s cup of tea. Some people just don’t like his style, and that has nothing to do with his sexual preference. I actually know a lot of people that like Adam as a person, but, his singing just didn’t do it for them.

You have to look at it like this. Maybe some people want to see that someone is more than just a good singer. They can actually play instruments, they can sing, they can write, and they can arrange songs. Kris is all of these things. 2 years running, a singer/songwriter won. I think that speaks volumes. America wants musicians, not just a pretty voice. The way I look at it, they both won. They will both go on to have great careers. But, to compare the two is like comparing seaweed to a kangaroo. They are polar opposites.

Ideals | 5/21/2009, 9:40 am EST

First off, I am a conservative Christian, and I LOVED ADAM, so to say it is all the religious people and their values is is untrue. I was heartbroken he did not win and voted for him many times over. Why? Becasue he can sing!….He was humble, and it is no ones place to judge but God… That being said. Adam is a true talent. You may not like his theatrics, or his voice, but he is the whole package. And to those who say all he does is scream listen to some of his recordings, watch some of his videos on YouTube, the boy has the range of a vocal god! I am happy for Kris, he needed to win. Adam will go far, and personally I wish him the best.

maryann | 5/21/2009, 9:41 am EST

I am from the Philippines and we love Adam here. Adam is a big hit here. We love him and we are saddened with the result. How can America be soooo narrow-minded?!

Patsy | 5/21/2009, 9:41 am EST

Oh well, another season is over without the best singer winning. Adam will be laughing all the way to the bank.

Dee | 5/21/2009, 9:41 am EST

I don’t know – Kris sounds just like so many other current put-you-to-sleep singers. Adam is the superstar- even Kris said he should’ve won. Makes me wonder if Adam already has significant offers brewing. Velvet Revolver? Queen? Was a fix in to assure better future for Adam?

Bruce k | 5/21/2009, 9:42 am EST

Yes, I agree Kris is not America’s Idol he is Arkansas’s Idol. Last night’s finale proved once again that Adam is well above Kris’s league. But I have to hand it to Kris..he knew it and acknowledged it. That shows a lot of class in my eyes. Still doesn’t take away from the fact that it wasn’t even a contest. For me I will just go to Itunes and continue to buy Adam’s music. I won’t buy anyone else’s because they don’t even come close to the talent.

MoMo | 5/21/2009, 9:42 am EST

Lets be real, America voted for Bush twice, what do you expect! I mean both guys are good, but Adam has a far more superior vocal ,technical and performance skills than Kris. I’m just shocked!

crock57 | 5/21/2009, 9:42 am EST

As Grandma used to state,” The cream will always rise” and last night was no exception to this rule.
It really had nothing to do with a “right wing” conspiracy; rather then the better singer won.
Put both singers on a stage with no band and let them sing thier songs and one would be comfortable and sound good and the other would be uneasy and exposed to his weakness. Adam singing lead for Queen (or a group like KISS) is right up his alley of talent, he needs the accessories to enhance his abilities, where ever Kris needs no additional facades.
I would of liked to hear the comments from the “pro Adam” Judges on the inability to comprehened the talent on thier own show.

not suprised | 5/21/2009, 9:42 am EST

You put a nice American clean cut predictable singer in a show that was geared towards middle America and put him against Miss California’s worst nightmare, and you are surprised that despite having the better voice, Adam Lambert didn’t win? Oh if only the foolish boy had the sense to stay in the closet and get a normal haircut!

Sharona | 5/21/2009, 9:44 am EST

After last night’s Idol finale, I have the same Bush-Gore 2000 next-day hangover I had back then, and again in 2004. Americans love mediocrity. It’s frightening.

This is the only season I’ve watched Idol, and it was because of Adam that I hooked up with it. Kris is an ok talent, but where will he be in 5 years? I don’t see it happening. Adam is another story, I think he has huge things ahead of him– and now he won’t have the “Idol winner” baggage follwing him everywhere he goes. Maybe it’s a good thing he didn’t “win”.

Soonergirl12 | 5/21/2009, 9:47 am EST

I think Kris won cause he is more mainstream/pop. He appeals to more people. Alot of people don’t like emo/gothic/rock. And those that do aren’t really the kind that watch Idol, let alone call in and vote. This really wasn’t my favorite season of Idol and none of the contestants this year will be the next Daughtry or Carrie Underwood.

paxma | 5/21/2009, 9:47 am EST

Adam was the winner of this season for us. We’ll buy his music, see him in concert and support him through the years. Simon’s body language said it all – he was the only judge who didn’t stand up when the announcement was made. The disappointment was there to see.

StrummerJones | 5/21/2009, 9:49 am EST

“There is nothing wrong with conservative American ideals. Please explain this to me: if American ideals are so terrible, why do so many people from other countries leave everything to move to America?”

America’s a fantastic capitalist society to prosper in. Compared to the ideals of, say, The Middle East or many African countries, America is saintly. However, we’re less progressive than we should be.

Anonymous | 5/21/2009, 9:52 am EST

Jackie,

vftw is having a big laugh right now. don’t freak out, it’s exactly what they want.

too much media exposure, the infamous idol backlash, the poularity of mellow rock mixed in with a dash of homophobia are also to blame. adam is going to be a superstar. kris is a decent guy and talented to boot. he, himself, stated, that adam should have won.

however, adam’s idol rejection offers him (adam lambert) a level of musical respectablity that will help, in the long run, i think. it’s something he needs to catapult him into the annuls of true rock and roll credibility and end the “he’s a poser” critques.

love you adam. i so wanted you to win, but you unparalleled talent, graciousness and friendships with kris and allison inspire to us all. rock on, buddy, i cannot wait to see what you do nest!

Sam is dumb | 5/21/2009, 9:52 am EST

I find liberals to be hilarious. There’s some of you claiming to be so “open minded” but in the same post you call all the people in the South a bunch of stupid rednecks.

It must be great to be so much better than everyone else just because you live in your parent’s house in Boston.

This wasn’t about whether Adam was gay or not. Some people just didn’t really get him because he’s a bit out there. You don’t see people like that walking around Iowa, so yes… Adam is weird for a lot of people. Doesn’t mean they are prejudice against gay people.

Also, Adam’s incessant screaming turned a lot of people off. Not everyone listens to that kind of music. Personally, I liked Adam, but completely understand why he lost.

Aries | 5/21/2009, 9:52 am EST

38million votes came from kris’s hometown only,

oh,it’s american idol or hometown idol?

scott | 5/21/2009, 9:52 am EST

Kris Allen won because he appeals to America more that Adam. He deserves to win. Adam is talented but I like Kris’s music much better. Adam’s music is not what I like. Should I have voted for Adam anyway? Sorry.

Kerry Kolsch | 5/21/2009, 9:52 am EST

Kris did not win in any fair-minded way. His home state of Arkansas sent in 38 million votes. Arkansas has less then 3 million population. It had to be electronically generated votes. Only Arkansas voted to make Kris the AI, not the rest of the country. This is not an “upset” this is a little state stealing the title from the man who deserves it. I will not watch American Idol again because this voting process is flawed. Adam won the hearts and minds of this country and he is my American Idol. Kris can go back to Arkansas with his “church” people who seem to think that it is all right to steal!

Unknown | 5/21/2009, 9:53 am EST

Adam should have won yes and he deserved it a lot more after putting his own ideas. But America will truly be the ones who will determine who goes places. If no one buys Kris’s CD’s and they buy Adam’s thats the key. Not just some Contest. Adam you should be proud of what you’ve done. You are a true artist and I would go to any concert of yours rather then someone who is mediocre.

Adamfan | 5/21/2009, 9:56 am EST

I feel the AI voting system is seriously flawed. I tried numerous times to vote for Adam and could not get through. Adam most definately should have won, but it doesn’t matter. He will have a much more sucessful career than vanilla Chris. Plus he doesn’t have to release “No Boundaries” as his first single. Seriously Cara. Also, I do think Chris only won because Americans feel comfortable with him. I know the majority of people in my office liked him for this reason. There is a reason most recording contracts are given by professional producers with a trained eye ane ear for talent, and not the American public!!

Ro | 5/21/2009, 9:56 am EST

I loved how Simon Cowell didn’t even stand to applaud the win of Kris despite the other three judges doing so. He just sat there looking annoyed. I share his sentiment. In my opinion, Adam is more deserving of a win than any other contestant in Idol history.

Racist, homophobes, etc. | 5/21/2009, 9:56 am EST

Why do so many people fall back on the crutch of labeling others when people don’t agree with them?

If someone doesn’t share your same opinion, it doesn’t make them a racist or homophobe. However, people in America resort to that immediately in situations like this. If Adam had been black, his supporters would have cried racist… obviously their opinions are correct, and there no logical reason why other people might not share the same choice in music as them.

People, we’ve got a black president… it’s not 1965 anymore. Those things still exist, but if that many people really hated Adam because of his orientation, he wouldn’t have even made it into the finals.

Cookiebr7 | 5/21/2009, 9:57 am EST

Most priceless headline I read says it all: “Kris Allen wins American Idol after a Two Hour Finale Which Showed Adam Lambert Deserved It.” Most priceless comment: “Adam Deserves This.” Yes, deep down inside, even Arkansas Idol KRIS ALLEN KNOWS THE AWFUL TRUTH: HE WASN’T THE BEST ONE. His win will forever be defined in most people’s eyes not so much as a preference for him as much as a preference for anything anti Adam. Yes, as much as some people may prefer Kris’s style, it can’t be denied that a HUGE part of his support was simply a vote AGAINST something else. Adam Lambert will not need 38 million votes from Arkansas to be what he already is: the Worldwide Idol.

coopisch | 5/21/2009, 9:57 am EST

I’d say I was rooting for Kris all the way. I can relate to him more than the theatrical Adam. And by the way. I’m not christian and american.

melody | 5/21/2009, 9:58 am EST

Mississippi Kay is so right that not all Americans should be accused of not voting for the true talent but it’s the small percentage of stupids cast few thousands each. Obviously Adam has higher popularity and received more affirmation on his talent. The only problem is those who voted for him have never expect there’re minority manipulating the game by vasting thousands and thousands votes each for Kris. AI has to get hold of the voting system if they want to make it a fair singing competition.

Toronto | 5/21/2009, 9:59 am EST

Last night was great it was nice to see David Cook again. Sorry to hear about his brother. I was shocked when I hear Kris has won it was a surprise I did’nt voted this time I wanted Danny Gokey to win the better singer between the the 2 of them..

Mike in Seattle | 5/21/2009, 10:00 am EST

While Kris peaked at the right time, and Adam peaked a few weeks too early, let’s really understand what happened. Kris won because people voted against Adam. He didn’t win because people voted for him.

There are still some uptight jerks in the United States who wouldn’t know once in a lifetime talent if it flew up and bit them in the butt.

Anonymous | 5/21/2009, 10:01 am EST

Don’t complain too much, people. Adam still gets the same record deal and everything. He even gets the honor of No Boundaries not being his first single.

– that is the funniest thing i ever read!

laf | 5/21/2009, 10:01 am EST

adam was the best singer, but the girls had a crush on kris. my 9 year old told me she hoped he won, because he was cuter… and then she asked why the other one wore make up. she is too young to understand sexual preferences… but she still could sense which one was more attractive to young girls. and i think, from looking at the audience… that more girls and guys, watch and vote. and sometimes it is based on who they find ‘cuter’ rather than who has the best voice. i told my daughter adam should win because he could sing better. she said her friends in school all liked kris, because he was ‘cute’.

SB | 5/21/2009, 10:01 am EST

Kris is talented, but Adam totally out sang all of the competition week in and week out. He rocked last night! Adam is going to go very far….I can’t wait to see what he does next. I’m wondering why AT&T handed out free phones in Arkansas for everyone to vote for Kris???? It’s not America that got it wrong…it’s a certain group of judgemental people who claim to have God in their heart..Adam needs to keep being himself and show these people that nothing can hold him back. LOVE YOU ADAM!

Gail | 5/21/2009, 10:02 am EST

I maintain that if voting was one vote per person, Adam Lambert would have won. It’s a statistical anomaly that a person who was consistently more googled, more downloaded, and more talked about lost, and this anomaly is only possible because of the voting system that allows people to vote multiple times, which invites abuse such as robo-calls. This voting system may have led to problems in earlier seasons but nothing will ever compare to the travesty of season 8. I have nothing against Kris who seems like a nice guy and a good enough singer but Adam towered over his competition in terms of both vocal ability AND popularity, as measured by the volume of Adam-related internet traffic, media coverage and sales of music and memorabilia.

john | 5/21/2009, 10:03 am EST

Sounds like the same story as the last year. The media and internet bloggers who were Cook fans started to bash little David and his father as the stage dad. Starting from TMZ, at one point, hundreds of AP reported the stage dad rumor. Simon went to the national talk shows and was against little David. Cook brought his dying brother to the game and tried to change his image from the arrogant to the heartbroken. This year, gay bashing and overpimping caused the upsetting result. This is not a singing competition. If it’s the pure singing competition, little David and Adam should have won.

iluzia | 5/21/2009, 10:05 am EST

ADAM is my rockstar! I can not wait for his first CD and to see him in concert! I love his vocal talents! Adam is so amazing!

Lisa | 5/21/2009, 10:07 am EST

I am from canada and would like to say, kris was good but adam was great.I am starting to believe that the better man has really won, those who need help win american idol and are bound to a contract, the runner up goes places, and adam my friend you will always be a winner in my eyes, and I know without a doubt you will go places.Look at Clay atkin,Rubben won where is he today, and where is clay? It’s no loss adam your life is just beginning.

IconOrIdol | 5/21/2009, 10:12 am EST

Furthermore, I can’t think of one truly iconic or unique artist that would ever have had a chance to win Idol. Prince, David Bowie, Elvis in his time … and the list goes on. Can you even imagine America handing an artist like Prince the AI title. The AI contest is NOT a true representation of talent or even popularity. It is the title of a minority (mostly kids) who are power voting for the so called cutest without any idea of what true talent is. These power voters will not be power buying. This is why America has yet to crown the true idol.

Carma | 5/21/2009, 10:12 am EST

Hello from a conservative Christian who loves ADAM LAMBERT! Just because someone embraces Christianity doesn’t automatically mean that they reject alternative lifestyles. I am a Minister of Music in the Baptist denomination and have been for the past 22 years. I am educated and experienced in the field of music and it is my opinion that Adam is the absolute most talented vocalist on our radar today – period. His ear for pitch and tone are flawless, his range is out of this world, and he knows how to perform and entertain. I truly feel that he will become a legend along with the likes of prodigy’s such as Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson, and BB King. Did Adam deserve to win? YES, but I for one am glad he did not. He deserves so much more than anything AI could have ever done for him.

Inn from Hong Kong | 5/21/2009, 10:17 am EST

What’s wrong with American?
Prpbably that’s the reason why I like Euorpe alot more than America. Please don’t tell me Kris is good guitar performer kinda of crap. Isn’t American Idol an SINGING contest?
BTW, if I’m not wrong, isn’t Kris from New Life Church? The most homo-hated religion community?
Let me know if I’m wrong

smysie69 | 5/21/2009, 10:19 am EST

Speechless! Shocked ! Shattered ! I am from Malaysia and I have been watching American Idol every week. I must say that most of us agree that Adam deserves the title. I agree with sonata that adam has a huge fan base from other countries i.e Asia. If only they (American Idol) allow people from countries other than America to vote , I mean separate the votes between American and other parts of the world… I am sure Adam will be the winner.

Sharona | 5/21/2009, 10:20 am EST

Adam was awesome this season because he stayed true to himself. Adam earned a huge and loyal world-wide fan base. However, Adam was a polarizing peformer as far as the American public goes, while Kris was not. I truly believe that it was the Anti-Adam votes that pushed the competition in Kris’ favor (but the Arkansas go phones power texting may also have played a role…). LOVE and LIGHT to Adam, my Idol in 2009 and years to come!!

Kris Allen Fan | 5/21/2009, 10:24 am EST

Kris Allen has been my favorite from the Beginning!!! He is truly the American Idol, he fits the dream! I love his tone of voice, his charm and can’t wait to buy his album! Kris deserves this! He is the heart of the American Dream where there are no boundaries!!! He was not chosen by the media, hollywood or Simon Cowell! He was chosen by AMERICA! I got to have my voice!!! I’m a 44 year old mother and my favorite male artists are: Kris Allen, John Mayer, Jason Maraz, Josh Groban, James Blunt, Joshua Radin, Seal, Blake Lewis, Coldplay, Michael Buble, Enrique Iglesias, Michael Johns, Sting, Jack Johnson & Elvis Presley

AudreyM | 5/21/2009, 10:26 am EST

Adam will be bigger than Elvis. Thank God he doesn’t have to sing “No Boundaries.” What a piece of yuck. I’m glad he came in 2nd. Now he has the artistic freedom to sign with the greatest and be the greatest. I have never been so “in love” with a performer.

Catherine | 5/21/2009, 10:29 am EST

As a rabid Adam fan for months now, I really do think he might be better off not being tied to the AI contract; however I DO want someone to tell me why all THREE phone lines were busy for most of the first 3 hours of voting. I actually stayed up late and finally in the 4th hour was able to get through. Until Idol changes the voting system, the 8 year old girls will control every reality show with their ridiculous texting capabilities. Actually, American Idol lost some legitimacy last night for actually being able to crown a true “world wide super star.” This has nothing to do with “Christian” voters or “homophobic” voters — it is all about who the tweenies think is the cutest for their age group. Stop with the Kris bashing and let us be as gracious as the real Superstar has been…

mistee- brown eyes | 5/21/2009, 10:29 am EST

wow, this is all very interesting! a young South African… n believe it or not, we do have the internet! unfortunately we r a day behind n the finale only airs tonight. im incredibly disappointed! my varsity friends and i, we have all been following AI hopelessly and Adam ROCKED OUR BOATS. Kris? well he was the typical cute guy 16yr olds would vote for. the talent goes to Adam, the charisma…Adam, the stage pressence…Adam, the performer…Adam and the artist…ADAM LAMBERT

anon | 5/21/2009, 10:36 am EST

Looks like all the Adam fans are crying today. It boiled down to Tued. night. Go back and look at it and Kris did much better. He’s got the all around package. Singer, song-writer, artist. Adam is very theatrical and Kris actually out sang him on Tues. night when the most people ever watched and voted. Many that had not voted all season. Especially the Moms. I was mixed on who I was saving my votes for and after Tues. night, Kris beat out after me going back and forth between the 2. America definitely got it right again this year! (Yes, many bands would love to have Adam as their front man.)

IndyMuse | 5/21/2009, 10:38 am EST

I wonder where people are getting the info that 38 million of Kris’ votes came from Arkansas? Sounds highly suspect to me. Someone needs to source that rather than everyone accepting it as true. I thought both men were great and can expect great careers in music. They are such different artists – one more a performer, the other more a musician. No need for fan wars over this, nor social commentary. Sounds like the vote was close and both are selling very well at iTunes. I voted purely on musical preference, personally. I am not greatly devoted to one or the other and may very well buy some from each. I probably violate most of the assumptions being made here about the voting.

chickc | 5/21/2009, 10:38 am EST

Remember the movie “Quiz Show”, where it tells the true story of the “Twenty One” quiz show game fixing scandal of the 1950s? Sounds very similar here.

Rupert Murdoch’s Fox Network pushes a very “right-wing” point of view including extreme Christian values. American Idol is on the Fox Network and to have a “possibly” gay eye-lining rocker represent the “values” of America probably pushed Christian corporate executives at Fox over the edge.

from Malaysia for Adam | 5/21/2009, 10:42 am EST

Too bad the other parts of the world couldn’t vote. If we could, the winner will definitely be Adam. Just could not understand how America cannot recognise talent when they see one.

Proud Arkansan | 5/21/2009, 10:53 am EST

I voted for Kris. The constant praising by the judges and assurring Adam the he was the next American Idol left a bad taste.
In the past 3 weeks before the finals, Adam screamed at some point in most of his songs. Yes I know they were notes, but perfect pitch doesn’t make a scream sound better.(Queen and Kiss some of my favorites.) The powers of the show dialed Adam’s over the top screams/notes back in the 2 nights of finales.

Bottom line Kris is the better all around musican/singer.(He did all his own arranging and helped others including Adam on theirs. While even Adam said he had others to thank for arranging his.) Best performer/stage presence Adam.
Both will be a big success in each of their own genre. That is why there is many different styles of music.

Side note- stop blameing the loss on the south and portraying them as 1.religious and 2. Homophobic.
JUST BECAUSE WE TALK SLOW DOESN’T MEAN WE ARE STUPID.

dees | 5/21/2009, 10:53 am EST

adam doesn’t need the so-called title ‘american idol’ behind his name. his mission in AI accomplished : he’s now known worldwide.

AI is the one who needs Adam to win. now, as he’s coming 2nd, he need not to be contractually bound with idol, and can have freedom to build his own career.

hope to see you become the best, Adam..

oh, and guys, think this article’s title need to be corrected a bit:
‘Kris Allen beats Adam Lambert on VOTING competition finale’

Grill | 5/21/2009, 10:53 am EST

It’s quite interesting to find out that everybody love Adam Lambert but not Americans. LoL

Pete | 5/21/2009, 10:57 am EST

What a bunch of whiners, Kris won. Get over it! Adam was a screamer and sounded like a girl, until last night when we had an chance hear his normal voice. America got it right..

Lisa Tucker | 5/21/2009, 11:01 am EST

I voted for Adam, however I think Chris is good as well. But he’s not even in Adam’s league. The fact is though, that Adam will have better options this way. We will be seeing a lot more of him than we will Chris.

Rddean | 5/21/2009, 11:11 am EST

I love reading these comments. Especially about Kris Allen’s amazing musical ability. I wonder if we even listened to the same show? America loves the underdog and Kris was superbly average. The same people that voted for Kris voted for Taylor Hicks. Taylor who? It’s like Ruban and Clay. Clay – millions of albums, millions from tours. Ruban – guest appearances on the NAACP and Bet awards show.
Kris will play at weddings for years to come.

sherri | 5/21/2009, 11:13 am EST

First of all, I live in Memphis which is a stone’s throw from Arkansas and let me tell you, there are not 38 million people in the entire state of Arkansas. Try about 3 million tops. This discrepancy shows a huge flaw in AI’s voting system.
Secondly, I was for Adam, however Kris was not bad. I think alot of people were maybe afraid of what Adam represented and voted against him, however Adam seemed fine with the vote and moved on.
Kris seems like a nice guy and has musical talent. He has just as much talent (and even more)than some of our current celebrities Madonna, Kate Perry etc.. I think the problem was that Adam represented the whole picture. From theatrical to one of the best musical voices ever (for those who claimed he screams let me tell you it takes a lot to sing/scream and maintain your pitch)and he definitely has the charisma to become a superstar. Kris has talent, however he has the John Mayer type of talent that definitely is not sustatainable in today’s over the top music concerts. (Think Hooties and the Blowfish, Huey Lewis and the News, Bruce Hornsby) While all these guys/groups were great they didn’t last.

Gerryin NJ | 5/21/2009, 11:14 am EST

I voted for 3 hours after the show ended at 9 pm EDT. For the first 90 minutes, I could vote for Adam for every 3 calls. After 10:30, there were 15-20 busy signals for every call that got through (for ALL three phone numbers). One time it even took ONE HUNDRED calls to get through once. I then switched my vote to Kris to check out his busy signals. I got through on ALL THREE lines after only 3 calls. I think there was hanky panky at AI against Adam. I suspect the servers for Adam were rigged to answer calls slower!!!! My experience did NOT match what was reported by DIALIDOL, at least for New Jersey.

trulyshea | 5/21/2009, 11:35 am EST

I can not believe that Kris won! I have to question myself will you watch AI ever again. Is it Rigged. Was Adam getting to much attention so they gave it to Kris, who by the way was horrible Tues. He forgot the words and was just awful. Even if you vote over all there is no way Kris out did Adam or Allyson or Gokey for that matter. By the way I love the Taylor Who? That is so true. That is where Kris will end up and I know Adam will make it alot further.

Kris appeals to a majority of Idol watchers. I was not surprised to see him win.

Adam is the most talented person I have ever seen on Idol. This is the first season that I tuned in each week to watch. Why? I wanted to see what Adam would do.

I can’t even say I am upset with the results. I think many of the contestants have a chance to make it in the music industry (let’s not forget Allison and Danny). If Adam hooks up with the right people, I think he will shine brightest and longest.

Bob | 5/21/2009, 11:45 am EST

The American people were asked the question what entertainer do you idolize the most…..not idolize to a degree but the most….the gave their answer…Kris Allen should never be made to feel bad that he won.

Lori | 5/21/2009, 11:49 am EST

If I was listening to the radio and I heard ADAM’S voice, I would definitely stop and listen. If I heard Kris, I’d just hit SCAN. ADAM is DEFINITELY the better of the two!!!

Cindy M | 5/21/2009, 11:52 am EST

If this was about Christianity then Danny Gockey would have been in the finals with Kris.

It is not about Adams sexuality.I kissed a couple of girls and I liked it. But I married a man. Adam is sexy to both men and women. That is called charisma.

Young girls don’t get it. They vote for who is the cutest. Mature adults vote for who is good. Since kids out number adults the kids win. I am sure if AI really showed more of Kris’s family life the young kids wouldn’t have voted for him. Because he is married and has a child. Kris is a good singer and musician. But Adam is an all around entertainer.

My money is going to Adam when his debut album comes out. I’ll listen Kris on the radio for free.

M | 5/21/2009, 11:52 am EST

I believe Kris Allen won because he is an extremely talented guy not because of his religious belief or Adam’s sexual orientation. I’m not saying that Adam is not talented, because he is, a great vocals and a great performer but the fact is, most americans prefer Kris Allen’s style of music. The kind of music that you can listen to anytime and anywhere.

I do like Adam’s take on “Black and White” but love all of Kris’ songs. His got that beautiful voice that I would never get tired of listening.

I hope people would be happy for him, he deserve it more than Adam did because he got to where he is without the air time and the pimping. He EARNED it.

You guys want fairness, you should tell the producers that they should give each and everyone of the contestants a fair share of airtime and judges should refrain from pimping a particular contestant and playing favorites. Each and everyone of the contestant should be given a fair shot at winning.

KRIS ALLEN YOU ARE AWESOME AND DESERVE TO BE OUR AMERICAN IDOL.

AchillesLastStand | 5/21/2009, 11:58 am EST

Crock57, you’re a fucking idiot. Singing with Queen right up his alley, huh? I bet you’re one of those idiots who think John Mayer is the best singer of all time and shit like that. Freddie Mercury was the greatest fucking singer of all time bar none and it’s no walk in the park to take up his mantle. Even Adam with his campy theatrics isn’t worthy. He is evidently the better singer. Hope he succeeds in whatever he does. But please, he has no business singing in Queen. He’s too young. Brian May will never “hire” him.

anon | 5/21/2009, 12:02 pm EST

Agree with (M) 100% about the airtime of idols and fairness of the judges! It should be equal and NO partiality shown.

anon | 5/21/2009, 12:07 pm EST

To Gerryin NJ—-It took me 3 straight hours calling all 3 numbers to get in 4 votes for Kris!!

lc | 5/21/2009, 12:09 pm EST

The only chance Adam had of winning was if Allison was in the finals with him. Kris got all of Gokey’s votes, for reasons already discussed…..then again, Allison MIGHT have taken him! She’ll be more successful than either one of them! Count on it!

Bub | 5/21/2009, 12:13 pm EST

American Idol has dumbed down Americas idea of what talent is. You can see the likes of Kris and Adam on stages all across America. Adam was an understudy for the touring production of Wicked, meaning they didn’t think he was worthy of the chorus! Clarkson, Cook, Sparks, Allen, come on people, we are better than this!!!

Very funny | 5/21/2009, 12:21 pm EST

It’s so funny to see people round the world to get upset that Adam did not win and the Americans try hard to protest that Kris Allen deserves the title.
Lucky that I’m not American.

beachlifeFlorida | 5/21/2009, 12:32 pm EST

Adam by far has more talent than Kris does. Adam’s vocals and stage performance has outperformed each and everyone of the Idol’s contestants. He was really remarkable to watch each week as the judges themselves commented. Adam has star quality that you cannot forget….Kris is forgetable. I hope that the “christian crap” did not play a factor in this win….then I feel sorry for Kris.

Anonymous | 5/21/2009, 12:44 pm EST

Danny_xxP | 5/21/2009, 12:48 pm EST

C’mon people, its like a deja vu..,, u guys who voted for Kris are the same guys who voted for Taylor Hicks, Ruben, Fantasia, these should be about talent and the hability to entertain, Kris is just an average guy with a nice smile, in most of your hometowns there are at least 3 or 4 guys like him, I think the idea of entertainer for you americans is totally wrong, its not the fact that I am not from the US, its the fact that the story repeats each time, you americans settle down with so much less than talent,, sure kris can sing, but it is the same thing with your other idols (talking about Miley Cyrus, Britney, Beyonce, etc. etc. etc.) they can sing, sure, but they are not multitalented performers, Adam on the other hand has the charisma and personality to nail a long and rewarding career, that’s why Simon is a judge, he’s from the UK they have a more complete idea of talent, not just a pretty face and a ok voice, as one of the comments above,,,, I’ll sure put my money on the debut album from Adam, as for Kris, I can definitely listen his music for free

Darcy | 5/21/2009, 12:57 pm EST

Let’s get this straight (no pun intended): Adam is a glam-rock god, not a rock god. That doesn’t appeal to everyone. I’ll wait to see what kind of band and music he puts together before I annoint him a star.

Kris is a folk singer. Capable, but not special or memorable. Simon was dead-on.

Some RS readers, including some posting here, have summarily dismissed David Cook’s obvious talent. Too bad. He and his band are bad-ass. Last year, he used the AI machine to break out of indie obscurity into the big time. Last night, he sang the hell out of his own song, fronting his own band, on one of the entertainment world’s biggest stages. FOR CHARITY. Now that’s a mega-star – and an American Idol.

Steve | 5/21/2009, 1:12 pm EST

Adam Lambert’s falsetto just started to get annoying after a while and what was with that gettup when he was playing with Kiss. He looked almost as ridiculous as Kiss did. I watched a grand total of 20 minutes of the finale and that was more than enough. When will this talent show fade away??

filipina | 5/21/2009, 1:16 pm EST

I am not Adam fan and prefered Alison or Danny in the finals but between KRIS and Adam, its obiously ADAM that deserve to win.
To Kris, to gain more an honor, give back your title to American Idol. People surely recognize you more.
“All things work together for good to those who love God. Think about it.”

Its being passed around that when One Voted, text massaging Voting for Adam it came back thanks for Voting for Kris.. So to me is sounds as tho AI was cheating the votes to be in Kris favor , Kris even knew they had cheated trying to give Adam Back His title . We all know Adam will be heard of for yrs to come and as for AI I will never watch it again , they did the same with Constantine , starting rumors that he was f“king Paula for votes and that is just not true , and Constantine was voted off over that issue . AI is only here for the money an ratings and need to all go back to England an let the Americans do the voting an judging

Bub | 5/21/2009, 1:54 pm EST

Steve:
Is that what you call Adams high range a “falsetto”? I call it “the sound a cat makes when being run over by a cement mixer”. Way to go America, I’m so proud, now we get our music stars from a T.V. Talent Show! Ted Mack where are you?

LaLa | 5/21/2009, 2:03 pm EST

Gerryin NJ, A friend of mine couldn’t get through on Kris’s lines until about 11:45, on any of the lines. She said she was able to get about 9 votes in. Everyone is so worried about phone lines but I think you are forgetting we were allowed to text our votes in too so don’t go by what the phone lines did. And for those of you who thought it was rigged AGAINST Adam you are ridiculous he was the apparent judges’ favorite from day one. Kris won because he appeals and is able to connect with more people than Adam was. Everyone I have talked to that DIDN’T like Adam didn’t like all his theatrics and screaming. He is a very talented person who will do very well in the industry. Ryan Seacrest said “America voted and Kris you are the winner” It’s over people get over it. Adam and Kris have both stated several times that they and their families are good friends through all of this. Why does everyone have to be so bitter. Kris said as soon as he won that Adam deserved it not him. That to me is a mark of a great person. This show is about talent and performance… for those of you who say Kris has no talent I’d like to know if you can sing and play 4 instruments? My guess is no. Kris has an amazing talent people! he won American Idol. Get over it, move on.

LaLa | 5/21/2009, 2:09 pm EST

Country:
They reported something similar to this on a news station where I live. Since Idol didn’t send out the confirmation text that night due to the high volume everyone was voting. The person got her confirm text and said it said she had voted for Adam meaning to vote for Kris. AT&T/Idol looked into that and said that the numbers were correct and the person must have misdialed and voted for Adam by mistake.

C | 5/21/2009, 2:15 pm EST

Adam will have longer and better career, guaranteed. Taylor Hicks beat Daughetry and McPhee and how well did that work out for him. If it wasn’t going to be Adam that one it should have been Allison. Kris sucks but stupid tween girls and dead behind the eyes mothers thought he was cute so he won.

Peter | 5/21/2009, 2:26 pm EST

It was apparent from the begining of the contest that Adam would not win; Pop music by it’s definition is more popular than rock music. Therefore it is only logical that the Pop artists like Kris or someone other than Adam would win. This is American “Idol” they are looking for a pop idol, this is not about talent otherwise you would have opera and jazz singers winning which would suck.

Lou | 5/21/2009, 2:31 pm EST

After reading many posts and blogs, it seems to me that more people have agreed that Adam should have won.

Did you also notice that the number of votes between the two were never mentioned. That’s a first; they always say how many votes came in, then how many votes between the.

I think something went AWOL with the voting. There must be something wrong as the world thinks Adam should have one. Oh that’s right too. . .only America can vote . . . that explains it.

anna | 5/21/2009, 2:35 pm EST

If you truly believe those results, I have that “oceanfront property” in Vegas to sell you. Whatever….Adam is the superstar!

anna in vegas | 5/21/2009, 2:47 pm EST

Adam was more than doubling Kris’ iTunes “pop” sales this morning!!!
You be the (honest) judge…..

Teresa | 5/21/2009, 2:47 pm EST

It doesn’t matter that Adam did not win…he’ll outsell Kris and doesn’t have the “Idol” contract to have to deal with for the next year. Adam will be extremely sucessful and probably signed a contract the minute he left the stage. Kris winning just shows the power of teeny boppers and their love of text messages. Wish they had a “grown up” show and one for the teeny boppers.

They do need to change the rules for voting. One voice, one vote and let the chips fall where they may.

Hmmmm. Oh yeah, I forgot Slash. Yeah, Lammbert, possibly one of the greatest up and coming voices for Rock’s newest generatiom.

Have a nice day!

Allen won this fair and square against incredible odds. He is a talented musician, and please – there are more styles of Rock out there than Seventies style Kiss rock theatre performance(which would not bite in the UK any more)
Allen won on his own merits despite being vastly unrecognised or promoted througout the series. Of course Adam will have a career, he is a theatre artist and not everyone’s cup of tea, for many he was simply ‘not wicked’. Despite that Kris and he recognise their diversity of appeal, so please get the message – millions of people LOVE KRIS ALLEN enough to vote for him against the hype that said he could not win. That is an amazing triumph, and along with his incredible duet with Keith Urban, showed his resiliance and talent as an artist of the future.

Argentina loves Adam.

Please, please Adam start your world tour now. We miss you already. You are a legend in the making.

To those of you who say Adam can only scream and doesn’t connect emotionally with audience and the song, you should watch his performance before Idol in youtube. Check out Adam Lambert singing “The Prayer”, “Dust in the Wind”, “Come Home”, “I Just Love You”, “Is Anybody Listening” and Come to me, Bend to me”.
You would regret you’ve ever said he’s a screamer.

To Kris Allen fans, especially those in Arkansas, congratulation.
I just hope those 2-3 million people in Arkansas who have produced 38 million votes could also buy 38 million copies of Kris Album. Oh wait, the album is not free…

The voting process works until you get down to a final four. Then each time one person goes away, there is a huge advantage for the singer who is the most like the one that left. I like Kris, and voted for him, but I think many votes were either “for” or “against Adam. The Danny fans voted against Adam. Older people (like my mother in law) who don’t get Guy-liner voted against Adam. People in Arkansas voted for Kris (which by this week was the same as against Adam).. then there are the vote-for-worst crowd who just want to ruin the show.

Same thing happened with Daughtry, his fan base was enough until the fan bases of the people he beat picked another person to vote for instead of him.

In theory, the bottom 5 could pick the winner by telling their fans who to vote for once they were voted off- if they all chose the same person they could totally choose the winner for America.

citygirl | 5/21/2009, 4:00 pm EST

Everyone is so passionate about American Idol. It obviously is a great show that gives young people a chance to get noticed in the music biz. No reason to hate on any person, state or region. It is what it is – the #1 TV Show in America. Be happy that musicians have been given this opportunity – and you have a show to watch each week that introduces you to people from all over America! It’s great!

Anonymous | 5/21/2009, 4:03 pm EST

There is absolutely no way to make a case for Kris Allen to have won if you are living in a reality based world. If you check most blogs across the Internet-there is an overwhelming amount of anger towards those that were clearly voting for something else than the talent-yep, the same moral majority voting block that got Bush elected into office now takes it upon themselves to screw up a talent contest. We all know how much they hate gays but did any of us think they would take it this far?
First of all, I am a woman in my late 60’s and straight-so please don’t automatically assume that only those who are gay could be posting this type of response. Quite the opposite-I have no doubt that the majority of America is getting sick and tired of having these nutcases trying to shove their dogma down our throats. They screwed up our nation by making it possible for a moron to be elected and now we can’t even be entertained with a talent show without them once again making it about religion?

As one of my cohorts put it, “I could eat the sheet music to that song and then shit a better one!” I loved Adam from day one, still do, cried when he fronted Queen last night, I LOVE this guy, but I think it was worth the loss so that Adam NEVER has to sing that piece of poo again!! You dodged a bullet, Baby!! Whew!! Wainting on pins and needles for your CD, you are my IDOL forever!!

Adam sounded liek a friggin woman hollering. Who wants to hear that?? Not me. He was just a one trick pony…sing and scream. Who wants to hear Whitney Houston sing a KISS song? Kris can sing (check) play the acoustic guitar (check) play the piano (check) that is talent. Putting on make up, polishing your nails, going through the drive thru at supercuts, and trying to be a Fallout Boy want to be is not talent. The right person won and Kris is well on his way to being the next Jack Johnson. And that ladies and gentlemen is a shoot

The fact that Brian May from Queen talked to Adam only, Bono gave him permission to sing One, and KISS clearly loved singing with Adam last night says it all. He IS the best voice to hit rock music in a long, long time. True rock stars (and Simon-bravo for not standing up at that travesty of a finale!)know the real thing we they hear it! He’s going to be the next Elvis/Bowie/Bono and rock desperately needs him.

Wow Elite 17, what made you so bitter and rude? Have your opinions sure, but to attack someone outside of your own country, insulting them on their culture….you are just downright mean.

Adam are a SUPER STAR and will fly high – I was so disappointed with the out come – you truly deseved to win. You have a great talent and will go far. I am your #1 fan and will plan on going to your concerts.

Nooooooo! SAo unfair!!! Adam should have won!

Jackie | 5/21/2009, 7:21 pm EST

WHATEVER… I will just return to watching ONLY the early episodes of AI, just for the comedic value, then stop watching thereafter. The true winner was not voted winner here… we all know Adam should have won.

ebele,9ja. | 5/21/2009, 7:42 pm EST

Granted, a lot of pple liked Adam &wanted him to win, but that is not enough reason to write off kris’ victory.
Kris deserved the title as much as Adam,& shd not be apologetic about winning.
It’ll just be as surprising to see how well Kris’ CDs will sell.
I wish both of them the very best in future.

Lainey C | 5/21/2009, 7:47 pm EST

Hmmm, wonder how much richer y’all made the telephone company?? I don’t envy those parents the phone bills coming to those who allow these silly children to spend 2-4 hours voting for some cute guy on the telly!! And I’d like to know if the statement that AT&T gave out free cell phones to the state of Arkansas to vote for Kris is really true? What a sham!!!

nikki from malaysia | 5/21/2009, 10:00 pm EST

Adam does’nt need to win AI. He’s already a confirmed Rock Star. Talented Kris deserves every bit of the title. Adam only appeals to rock fans. You listen to him, after sometime you lower the volume. You can listen to Kris all day and not get tired.

bennie new york | 5/21/2009, 10:04 pm EST

i never thought i’d see the day that American Idol would cross with politics. It’s clear that Adam lost because of his sexuality. I love Kris, but Adam was totally deserving. This is the guy who saved Idol, and for him to not win puts a gaping hole in the legitimacy of Idol. Adam’s loss is going to be very hard to get over. He’ll do fine post-Idol, though- I’m sure of that. But about the whole issue of Adam’s sexuality- I see the Idol result as a direct correlation to the fight for gay rights. The majority is in favor of equality but is complacent, leaving the power in the hands of an outspoken, active minority. Idol meets politics. Chew on that.

dot from canada | 5/21/2009, 11:03 pm EST

what’s with you americans????? don’t you know real talent when you HEAR and SEE it. ADAM had it hands down, will be watching with eyes wide open for you adam your way to the top. only wish you were coming to canada…….

Angelene | 5/21/2009, 11:04 pm EST

Adam SHOULD have won last night. he didn’t, but was the really a surprise? We all know that most people are backward. Having said that it’s not a bad thing for Adam that he didn’t win because now he won’t be caught up in the “Idol Machine” and he will be able to make a record he wants to make and that we will want to buy.

I LOVE that Adam is rock – real rock! He’s next in line .. there was Elvis, the Rolling Stones, Guns N Roses .. and now Adam Lambert.

A final point to say that Adam is only Rock, that is not true – his interpretations and performances of “Tracks of My Tears”, “Mad World”, “Nobody But You” were flawless. Plus he nailed Big Band, the Blues and disco ..

Salvz | 5/21/2009, 11:16 pm EST

ADAM LAMBERT SHOULD BE THE NEXT AMERICAN IDOL!!! HE IS MORE DESERVING TO WIN. I’M SURE ADAM LAMBERT’S STAR WILL SHINE THE MOST!!! HE WILL BE THE SHINIEST IDOL STARTING NOW!!!

TshaninLV | 5/21/2009, 11:50 pm EST

Not only “Older People” voted for Adam. I’m in my 50’s and my mom is in her 70’s and we both voted for Adam as many times as our fingers would let us. For Kris to have won makes no sense to either of us. Adam was clearly the best singer and the best entertainer all season long. His vocal range is incredible and he never missed a note all year. Kris was ok, but nothing special. He’ll be in a bar band in Arkansas before you know it. There is a theory going around that Fox engineered a Kris win because they didn’t want a gay Idol. I never heard him admit to being gay, and I don’t care one way or the other, but I sure hate to think that they would cheat just to get the kind of Idol they want ( i.e, not gay, a good Christian, boy next door). I hope that isn’t true. I don’t see how Arkansas could possibly have generated 38 million votes, though. California is Adam’s home state and it has a lot more people in it.

Lynn | 5/21/2009, 11:56 pm EST

You guys are all like broken records. Either that American Idol is based on homophobes or that its based on a popularity contest. You are all saying the same thing. If Kris won the popularity and Homeophobe votes, than why was Adam so popular? why did he make it to top 2? Adam was WAYY more popular than Kris, I mean no one knew who he was until semi finals week and even then he sort of was in the background. Yet we saw Adam from the very beginning. So if I am following the majority of Adams fans mindset…than shouldn’t Adam of won? I mean he obviously was the more POPULAR one, everyone knew who Adam lambert was… but eventually Kris started lurking up behind Adam and people noticed. So honestly…if this was a popularity contest..than Adam would have won…drastically. But since it really isn’t than we can go back to the topic at hand. Kris won because people liked his style of singing. what may be boring to some might be dreamy to others. Not everyone out there is a glambert fan.. I’m not. And I find it insulting when you glamberts tell me WHAT type of my that I should liked. People are all different, therefore they all have different tastes….get over yourselves.

JJ | 5/22/2009, 12:35 am EST

Adam should have so totally won. Ask anyone who has watched both Adam and Kris sing LIVE, listen to the judges cos they hear it LIVE, believe what the mentors say cos they hear them face to face…. it all boils down to one name – ADAM LAMBERT!!!!! There’s no more room in my heart for another singer/idol. It’s just Adam Lambert and no one else!
BTW, Singapore loves Adam!!!!!!!

JP | 5/22/2009, 12:51 am EST

Why can’t people understand that reality shows like AI are about public opinion. And the public is not expert on the finer nuances of rock, pop, etc. They just vote on the basis of simple things, like liking or not liking a performer. If truth be told, more viewers LIKED Chris than did Adam. Not surprising, if Chris is more the boy-next-door variety and AI is a family oriented program. Critics should accept this and should let it rest at that. All this debate about politics and conservatives and other things are just, as Simon would say, rubbish. The thing is to enjoy the show and when the TV is turned off, forget about it, instead of getting so involved with these stupid discussions.

dr cakes | 5/22/2009, 1:05 am EST

I tot and still think adam deserved
to win he was clearly better but
let’s face it its a big world out there big
enough for kris and adam to both do
well and what’s with kris`s humility its irritating
Why can’t he believe he is good with songs like heartless aint no sunshine
Just be glad u won and not make ur fans
Feel stupid.I am an adam fan and he
didn’t need Ai one bit ai should be
grateful for the icon ADAM LAMBERT

Lilly | 5/22/2009, 3:59 am EST

America! What is wrong with you people!
Why did you not vote Adam Lambert the winner? It is clearly evident, even to us ‘hillbillies’ in New Zealand that he should have won. He has been the most consistent entertainer since the season began. He truly deserved the recognition of winning.

Jassy | 5/22/2009, 6:15 am EST

I never watched American Idol, I found it increadibly lame. I started watching after seeing a snapshot of Adam’s performance!! He is amazing.
I am looking forward to his record and leave the boring stuff to America to listen to!!!

DEE | 5/22/2009, 10:27 am EST

How sad that the focus of what this competition really was got lost along the way. American Idol is a SINGING competiton – not a beauty contest, not an instrumental competition and certainly not a moral character competition. Kris is a genuinely nice guy, and I wish him well, but he was not the best singer in this competition. Not by a long shot. If we’re being honest, he should have been voted out somewhere around the time that Matt did (maybe earlier). Others were so much better than him. Adam, regardless of whatever his personal life may be, was just in an entirely different league than anyone else. No one else came close to being as good! A great example of this was the “We Are The Champions” duet with both Adam and Kris. When Adam starts to sing, Kris disappears right in plain view of everyone. Adam truly is an amazing talent! I am a Christian who believes as the Bible says – we should hate the sin not the sinner (if indeed that comes into play). When people use a competition to promote their religious agenda, I ruins things for everyone else. Obviously, American Idol’s voting system is flawed when this can be allowed to happen.

Gerry | 5/22/2009, 10:52 am EST

“I am proud to be an American. There is nothing wrong with conservative American ideals. Please explain this to me: if American ideals are so terrible, why do so many people from other countries leave everything to move to America?”- texan girl

Just FYI honey, I moved here not because of your conservative ideals. In fact, Texas would probably be one of the last states I would move in if I have to. I am happy in New York where everyone feels welcome and nobody has to shove religion down my throat.

Hey!!! | 5/22/2009, 12:45 pm EST

This are the reasons why kris won the AI; first, kris is a great singer, number two, kris has a passion for music, third, kris can sing with his heart, fourth, kris is humble, and finally kris was worth listening plus other million positive reasons. Yeah adam is really an astonishing singer, and can belch out his lungs, but comparing him to kris, more people can relate to kris; and FYI if the adam fans wanted their rock-god/goddes to win they should have voted until their fingers bleed and their eyes pop out. Kris won fair and square, kris won because he too has a lot of admirers and fans. Saying that adam lost because of his sexuality is a dumb thing, adam lost because his fans didn’t voted enough because they thought their adam will surely win… well, millions of people believed in kris and voted for him.

Kris and Adam are two different yet awesome singers so… adam fans don’t be such sore and bitter losers, respect kris the way you respect adam for his uniqueness and sexuality! period!!!

angelinaaa | 5/22/2009, 12:50 pm EST

i dont understand this cute thing about kris ? what do you people mean ? this was a singing contest not a baby show

AdamFan4Life | 5/22/2009, 3:29 pm EST

38 Million votes for Kris from Arkansas! That’s where this whole thing went wrong. America probably did get it right, Arkansas didn’t. The results were skewed and thats why we didn’t hear any final figures. I’m an analyst and the last thing you should ever do is present flawed/skewed data. America knows the title should have gone to Adam. That’s why the vast majority of online polls say Adam should have won. This is the biggest upset ever and will ultimately be the nail in the coffin for the American Idol show. RIP

Whatever | 5/22/2009, 7:48 pm EST

Hey!, you are absolutely right, Adam didn’t win because his fans did not spend enough time voting for him and now they keep on whining because Kris Allen’s fans voted for their favorite???

This is a free country, you get to vote for who you want. If you guys wanted Adam to win you should have voted the entire 4 hours just like Kris’ fans did. Just because you guys like Adam that doesn’t necessarily mean everybody else should too.

You guys need to give it a rest. Get on with your lives.

Rochester, New York | 5/22/2009, 10:55 pm EST

Isn’t this a bit like the Presidential results. The man who had the most inherent integrity, grace and dignity as well as tremendous competence, skill and gifts won. Not the loudest or showiest. Both are vey talented, fortunate artists. we were lucky to have such performances by such special people. Kris, however did not have to force his talent theatrically. It just is!!!!!

Dave | 5/23/2009, 12:11 am EST

AI just jumped the shark!

Hugh | 5/23/2009, 4:21 am EST

Golly wow! What a bunch of sour losers! Move on guys, Adam lost and Kris WON. Where did you get the 38 million votes from Arkansas? Arkansas is only around 3 million in population. Plus, what happened to the supposedly millions of Adam fans. Why didn’t they vote?

Kris is a wonderful artist. He can write his own songs and has the charm to go with his singing. He has always shown who he is and that’s what gave him the votes. Not the act or the pimping.

I’m waiting to see if a Jamie Foxx duet will materialize soon. But one thing for sure, I will buy Kris Allen’s album. And those who voted for him also will. And that’s a lot of people. We love you Kris!

Christchurch, New Zealand | 5/23/2009, 6:21 am EST

I am in complete agreement with my countrywoman……were this competition held in New Zealand the others need not have applied, Adam would have won by a country mile. He was very clearly the best singer. Idol has never seen his like, and may never again. He is the real deal…a great singer, a showman, and has charisma dripping from his pores. Quite simply he is an Idol, and in time I believe he will become an entertainment icon. America was ready for a black president, but not ready for an Idol who did not conform to the conservative moral majority. Kris, a nice unassuming young man, will be a one hit wonder…..Adam will be remembered for generations. Congratulations America on getting it so wrong, you still have a lot of growing up to do.

jAdAm | 5/23/2009, 11:16 am EST

ADAM LAMBERT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sarah McDonald | 5/23/2009, 6:41 pm EST

I’m not American, infact I’m Scottish. One of the reasons I kept watching AI all these months was Adam. Allison being another. Chris was great but lets be honest America is filled with this popular kid eutopia which is a form of bias in modern society. Lets face it Adam far out weighs any of the other contestants and actually seeing him perform with Kiss and Queen he’s up there with them…. America, get over your bias attitude of squeaky clean popular kids succeeding, Lets face it the Stones, Beatles and Kiss certainly never fitted your stereotypes…and how much success have they had. Let go of your stereotypes and recognise a star when it’s handed to you on a plate.

It DOES NOT MATTER ANYMORE!!! So what if Kris won the “American Idol” crown. That was too minuscule for ADAM anyway. There is another crown called the “World Idol” crown and ADAM is now wearing it!!!!! He hasn’t even put out his album yet and he’s already a SUPERSTAR and his name it hitting top headlines. I wonder what all fuss it all about!! Adam has won the hearts of millions across the globe and that’s enough!

Annoyed | 5/24/2009, 3:27 pm EST

At first, I wasn’t quite sure why Kris Allen winning the title of “American Idol” was so irritating to me … it is after all a talent show on TV. Clearly, Adam is already an icon in his own right, so it’s really not that important that he win the show. And Kris, he’s a likable, decent human being. Although not as vocally gifted as Adam, he’s definitely a respectable musician. But then I realized it was something a little deeper. It was the fact that Kris Allen IS America’s Idol. Americans swarm to whatever is safe, regular and comfortable. Adam is “theatrical” and uses “vocal calisthenics.” Put another way, Adam has stage presence – he commands your attention. And even more, he can actually sing with vocal dexterity (listen to his vocal passages in Whole Lotta Love – they are quite complex and something no other singer on that show could have even attempted). In general, these skills are REQUIRED to perform any western music written from the time of Bach through about the early 1900s.

People forget that music began as an art form. It seems as of late, no one cares about virtuosos, or artistry, or technical abilities – only that they hear a pleasant sound, so that the audience can “relate.”

This is not a new phenomenon, but a stark reminder of the demise of the American music industry. People want something predictable – someone nice who sounds exactly like everyone else on the radio – with music that all ends happily with a pleasant V-I chord progression. I don’t hate Americans … I just wish the general population would raise their standards a little. It’s frustrating when all the posters on here from other countries can so clearly see what many Americans cannot. Why doesn’t interesting music appeal to our popular culture? Why doesn’t anyone try to learn about what they don’t understand? Why can’t I hear Bjork or Portishead on the radio? I fear Americans will eventually be deemed the international abyss of cultural mediocrity. And as Americans, you really should care about this.

Bay Area | 5/24/2009, 7:13 pm EST

Adam lost because he sounds just like the lead singer from Stryper.

His voice is twenty-five years too late.

Anonymous | 5/24/2009, 10:24 pm EST

wow.looks like the general consensus is also adam lambert should have won here too….

with that being said…all one has to do is vist kris allen nation/ operation ding dong and read, just how elaborate this organization was..they wanted their guy to win and accomplished just that..i read on article on a phone tech who state he rigged his systems to send out 30,000 calls!!! t

the show is over now…when you get down to it…the producers had the right to disqualify large segements of “power votes” _– they did nothing..almost like they used adam lambert!
the hard facts google/ internet sales/ even the idol site itself indicated adam was most popular..

when a few people can outmass the rest of the country that is a real slap in the face…
boycott american idol….let the rating fall like never before! i do say that i believe simon knew
well enough not to stand and applaud this finale..!!!!

idol is not a talent show…YOUR vote does not count! just a scam!

dan | 5/24/2009, 10:32 pm EST

even kris himself stated that adam should have won this!!!!

half of the country couldnt even remeber what he sang in the previous weeks..!!i tunes skyroctked with adam 6 out of 10 downloads, IDOL KNEW EXACTLY WHAT THEY WERE DOING!! kris allen did not win on his talent alone!!!! WE all know this…!!!seems like a really nice kid…but better watch ..the end sometimes justifies the means! Adam really was the winner, week after week, and to the end!!!

? | 5/25/2009, 4:44 pm EST

In South Africa, people could only vote telephonically or via sms, and had to pay for these. I am sure if the same applied to AI then perhaps Arkansas would not have managed so many votes.

Anyway, all the best to both but Adam is a superstar, his mad world song was already requested to be played here on SA radio stations.

WE LOVE YOU ADAM!!!

miffed in ohio | 5/28/2009, 8:51 am EST

I can’t believe that a topic is widely spreading on the internet that Chris Allen won due to unfair tactics via texting. I think the judges should have saved their one vote to change the obvious bull—- results of this finale. Adam Lambert won this contest from the very first song he performed. Allison should have the number two person, but surely not Chris!!!. Chris is OK, but not great by any standards. This show is sinking fast as far as choosing talent over “cute”. Anyway, Adam will be received as the true winner, just as Clay Akin was over Rubin. The rules for AI should be changed to let judges, not Americans having the final say over true talent. Look at how many times America have gotten it wrong, and truly great talent went home too soon.

Wake up America!!! Stop being last to do the right thing. Realize that being fair, will bring peace and honesty to your country. As for American Idol, this really should by the last season because the show is boring after the try-outs are over and the best singers are sent home because of unfair votes.

Enough of this negative crap.. Adam and kris are both talented guys. As for as the Gay thing..hogwash.. Im gay and I voted for Kris..Adam was way too over the top for me. As for as the all the votes coming from Arkansas… people look up the population…. Arkansas has only about 3 million people.. there is no way the 38 million votes came from that state…. besides Adam’s home state is California… Does anyone know how many people live in that State? Why didnt they vote? Stop whinning sore losers and get a life! OMG Adam Lost my life will never be the same….LOL..Its a reality show for petes sake.

MatthewW | 5/30/2009, 8:36 am EST

I think both of these guys are great! They just have their own styles of music. I loved watching Adam but at the end of the day its Kris Im listening to in my car. Adam would be great on broadway or in a live rock performace. As far as AI is concerned, the fact the Simon didn’t stand up for Kris’s Win regardless of his thoughts of who should have won only reflects his lack of professionalism and relfects badly on him. I wish both Kris and Adam well. We need to move on now by supporting our favorite performer and buying their music and thus helping the economy recover :) Ranting and raving accomplishes nothing.

raegirl | 5/30/2009, 8:44 pm EST

I feel bad for Kris. Can you imagine how hard it would be to carry the title of American Idol when you knew that it was won by the sleazy cheating voters of your home state?

ty | 5/31/2009, 6:43 pm EST

Just listened to studio version of No Boundaries by both artists. There’s no comparison. Sorry Kris fans. He’s decent enough and I guess a nice person, but he put me to sleep. Adam is amazing. And he does have a worldwide following. I just hope he is not too tightly bound by the AI contracts. Hope he is free to do his own thing.

yay | 6/10/2009, 1:15 am EST

adam likes kris.

AJ in Seattle | 6/16/2009, 11:00 pm EST

The only problem that I have here is very simple. If you expect me to vote in an election, I expect to know the results. What would happen in any political election if someone just came along and said that Busch won and that was it, no numbers to back it up. It wouldn’t be stood for. So why are we standing for this? As voters and watchers of the show, why aren’t we demanding to at least know the results. If it is a landslide, we can take it and so can Adam (even though I don’t think it is a landslide at all). I and I’m sure the other Adam Lambert fans could take this a lot better if we knew the exact numbers. What is there to hide?
