How Adam Lambert Lost “American Idol” to Kris Allen

Since American Idol’s eighth season kicked off in January, audiences have been fixated on charismatic Adam Lambert, a contestant unlike any the show has seen in its run. His reworkings of songs like Johnny Cash’s “Ring of Fire” were seductively imaginative (like ‘em or hate ‘em), and though his creative adventurousness recalled last season’s victor David Cook, Lambert boasted two new qualities for Idol: star power and a certain unknowability. “There’s a ‘boy who fell to Earth’ quality about him, like David Bowie’s Lady Stardust come to life,” Rob Sheffield writes in our current issue.

So how did Lambert, who was favored for the win and captured the fascination of a nation, lose the competition? (We noted there were five ways he could go wrong.) Was it song choice, confidence, the impact of Danny Gokey’s voting block? Perhaps other factors influenced the vote — there have certainly been an assortment of ugly statements left in our comments section — but we’ll focus solely on the performance, rather than outside politics surrounding the final two singers. (Also see What’s Next for Adam Lambert and look back at his Idol run in photos.)

Too little rock, too late
Lambert blew viewers’ minds — and recruited unlikely classic-rock fans — with his throat-shredding renditions of Led Zeppelin’s “Whole Lotta Love” and Steppenwolf’s “Born to Be Wild.” But as we feared, he held back on the rock & roll histrionics on Tuesday’s final performance show, opting instead for the understated “Mad World.” When he took the stage with Kiss at the finale, he was clearly in the zone, but audiences didn’t get a glimpse of that spectacle the night the votes were tallied.

An early and often judges’ favorite
Being the judges’ pet doesn’t always pay off. As David Archuleta learned last year, earning praise week after week might be instantly rewarding, but it ultimately mobilizes opposing singers’ fanbases to hit the phones. Everyone gets out the vote for the underdog, but the leader sometimes falls behind in the votes. Adam was strong and steady throughout the competition while Kris grew with each week — a quality that appeals to voters who like to feel ownership over a young star’s rise.

An extreme persona, but Idol skews conservative
Idol isn’t afraid to embrace an innovator like Cook, but the show overall tends to reflect the tastes of a majority of its audience — past winners Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Taylor Hicks, Ruben Studdard et al. were all understated in appearance and performance. Lambert, however, had an extreme stage persona and a wilder taste for rock & roll fashion. While he remained upbeat and down to earth in his interviews, his otherworldly onstage presence may have turned off as many viewers as it attracted.

Handcuffed by final three song selection
Because he was known for turning songs into spectacles, Lambert was at a disadvantage Tuesday night by the coronation song “No Boundaries,” which he couldn’t rework or rock out. Show creator Simon Fuller chose soulful selections for both Lambert and Allen, which didn’t play to Adam’s vocal strength. So he had only one shot — his own pick — to demonstrate his true artistry.

Kris performed strong all season long
Kris Allen is a gifted vocalist and arranger, and while he didn’t instantly stand out in the Idol pack, he worked hard to keep his performances creative and forge an emotional connection with the audience. His version of “She Works Hard for the Money” and “Ain’t No Sunshine” were two of the season’s best, and he struck a chord with a diverse swath of fans.

You can’t really discuss “how Adam Lambert lost ‘Idol’” without discussing homophobia. Take a look around the web and you’ll see some of the most disgusting, homophobic garbage being spouted. Even Bill O’Reilly got involved, discussing what would “happen” if Adam won. The reason Adam made it as far as he did is because Kris and Danny divided the conservative Christian vote. Danny’s voters united behind Kris to give him the win. Adam was an aggressively sexual gay man, the type of performer we rarely see outside of heterosexual confines. Gay men who exude sexuality are threatening to middle America, and Adam clearly fell victim to that.

The sad truth here is that America just isn’t ready for a gay idol.

bg lady | 5/21/2009, 8:29 pm EST

Adam Lambert was clearly the most talented competitor on Idol this season. He out sang and out performed everyone! I look forward to following his career.

Dot Green | 5/21/2009, 8:33 pm EST

Kris was the same all season – never really coming out of his shell – the problem is he didn’t know how to. Adam was in a different league. Most viewers tuned into AI to watch Adam.
He was something new not the same old stuff AI had for the last 7 seasons. He made all of the contestants better because they had to keep up with him. Kris really didn’t deserve to win. He said it himself

Vada | 5/21/2009, 8:33 pm EST

Kris even makes that trophy song sound good, especially in the studio version.

Mike | 5/21/2009, 8:33 pm EST

Adam lost because he is gay and the anti-gay voted used Twitter (i.e. Ted Haggard hypocrite) etc. to get the votes going. Doesn’t help that Danny’s is a born again Jesus freak (we love Bill Maher for coining this expression) and he fan base migrated to the boring Kris Allen. This is America! ADAM, you ROCK.

lisa4u | 5/21/2009, 8:34 pm EST

Adam got robbed………Cris was no comparison to Adam in vocal strength or stage presence.

Christine Betz | 5/21/2009, 8:34 pm EST

Black or white, right or wrong, Adam has the ability to become a star without the backing or guidance of the Idol producers. I believe he will become a star now that he has not only shown his theatrical ability, but his ability to entertain us with his amazing voice. Thanks for listening, to a 40 year old Glambert fan!

Erin | 5/21/2009, 8:34 pm EST

Kris was a total dud compared to Adam. It was like watching a rock concert when Adam was on stage, then switching to a cover singer at a local bar when Kris was on stage. No comparison at all!

Cleo | 5/21/2009, 8:34 pm EST

Someone has suggested that the people of Arkansas voted like crazy for their home-state Kris — not becuase of talent, but because he is from Arkansas — whereas, California did not turn out and vote as enthusiastically for their home-state guy, Adam. Adam is/was the STAR of American Idol — even Kris acknowledged this fact — Adam DID win the American Idol title on pure Star talent alone — the fact that the votes didn’t back this up is neither here nor there. I will be buying Adam’s CD’s and following his career. Kris is a talented musician also, but Adam is incredibly outstanding. The best AI has ever had! So, in short, my analysis of your analysis is: FIDDLESTICKS!

Erin | 5/21/2009, 8:34 pm EST

I think Adam may have lost because his fans were older and did not vote. It seems that Kris on the other hand appealed to the younger Tweens – who I would assume make up a huge voting bloke. My friends 85 year old mother watched from her hospital bed to see Adam win. Her mother and the two of us felt he should of won – did any of us vote, no.

CDier | 5/21/2009, 8:36 pm EST

Your an idiot. Not sure what show you were watching. If I want to hear the boy next door sing, I’ll go next door. If I want to be entertained…I’ll go to an Adam Lambert concert!

lisa4u | 5/21/2009, 8:38 pm EST

Not true about Adams sexuality. I am a conservative Christain & Adam was my favorite American Idol ever. My vote was for his talent not for his sexuality.

witenite | 5/21/2009, 8:38 pm EST

The show is rigged and we all know it.

erikaemerika | 5/21/2009, 8:38 pm EST

I think Adam will get the first award!!!! And it won’t be a Tony. If I here one more time he should be on Broadway and that he screams, I think someone will have to restrain me! In the long run I think Adam will be better off. Did you see Simon’s face! He knows were the money and talent is at ADAM LAMBERT!
Kudo’s to Kris for his win as well he is awesome!!!!!!!!1

Anonymous | 5/21/2009, 8:39 pm EST

I dont think christianity views or politics and his sexuality should be a priority to music. All those freaks hiding behind churches and calling themselves christians. plzzzzzzzzzzzzz!!!!!!!! and further more what a gay idol has to do with anything. it’s all about music. who knows what kris does under the covers……….???? I believe Adam is way more of a singer than kris and he is unique unlike kris. even dani was better than kris. gosh!

Joey | 5/21/2009, 8:39 pm EST

Adam Lambert is a talent you don’t see often. He is a Steven Tyler/Axel Rose type talent. Kris’ first couple of albums will do well but Adam will blow Kris away in sales over a career.

Muffet | 5/21/2009, 8:40 pm EST

There are voters who sometimes believe losing is better for the strongest performer. The American Idol title comes with lots of control over creativity. They cookie cutter the winners into pop music.

That’s why I voted for Kris even though I love Adam. I’ll enjoy hearing Kris sing pop music on the radio. I’d cry hearing Adam singing pop music. Adam deserves more creative freedom than the American Idol title offers.

Classic rock lovers want Adam to create a masterpiece. We don’t want him under the control of American Idol.

Anonymous | 5/21/2009, 8:40 pm EST

I am a 55 year old heterosexual woman. It made no difference to me what Adam Lambert’s sexuality is. He could sing better than anyone else. He was/is a huge talent, interesting, different, vibrant, dynamic to watch and listen to. That is what he was supposed to be judged on, and he wasn’t in my opinion. He should have won, but no matter, he will be successful by any stretch of the imagination!!!

Jacquie | 5/21/2009, 8:41 pm EST

Adam Lambert far surpassed anyone in the competition. The other contestants appeared as amateurs next to Adam. Adam Lambert is equal to Elvis Presley. There hasn’t been another since Elvis that could fill Elvis’s shoes, and now Adam has proved without a doubt that he can and has.
We all know that something underhanded took place and that Adam didn’t win because of it.

Rae | 5/21/2009, 8:41 pm EST

Adam is amazing and will be a huge star anyway!

becky | 5/21/2009, 8:41 pm EST

Kris deserved to win because he has more commercial viability compared with Adam’s dinner theatre antics.

TheRamblingRose | 5/21/2009, 8:43 pm EST

Here in our state they were on the news showing people sending in text messages by the thousands. One person had send 7,000 and still have two more hours to send votes. All for Kris. He didn’t win by talen, but by text votes sent by the same person for thousands of times. Voting should be changed.

Danelle | 5/21/2009, 8:44 pm EST

I think how votes are cast needs attention. One coworker voted with her entire family for four straight hours on their cell phones. She bragged about voting over 400 times. If Arkansas did log in over 48 million votes as ATT is reporting, in a state of 2.5 million people-how is that a fair representation? It puts a slant to the final outcome that may not be real.

FearlessinAustin | 5/21/2009, 8:45 pm EST

Without a doubt, Adam is a stronger performer and a truly seasoned artist. Kris is a nice guy with a nice voice only I doubt he has the staying power needed. Like the fireworks over Arkansas, he will be pretty and loud for a brief moment with a bit of sizzle then he will burn out.
I will buy everything Adam releases…he is amazing in that he can sing anything and make it sound great. Well, almost anything “No Boundries” is proof of this.
For those that can rememeber a band called the ANIMALS, Adam reminds me of Eric Burden. I would love to hear him sing “House of the Rising Sun”. His “Tracks of My Tears” amazing!!!
Rock on Adam…we love you!

Annie | 5/21/2009, 8:47 pm EST

I have to strongly disagree about your comment on the final performances. “Change is Gonna Come” was brilliant. It was the best performance of all. And the “coronation song” was sung so much better by Adam. Kris even forgot the words at one point. Please listen to that performance again.

Raya | 5/21/2009, 8:47 pm EST

Adam is a winner no matter what and will have a fantastic career. He already is a “Star”. He owns the audiences and stages! Kris is a “nice all American boy” and hopefully will have a good career also.

Toddy Walters | 5/21/2009, 8:47 pm EST

Kris Allen is a talented singer. Adam Lambert is a phenomenal performer. Kris might sell CDs but Adam will be winning Tonys.

Observer09 | 5/21/2009, 8:47 pm EST

Kris Allen only switched up his songs like 2 times, count them 2. Every week Adam Lambert switched it up. Each performance was his own. Come on now, “Ain’t No Sunshine” was sang like he was in a karaoke bar or Dave & Busters. Nothing different. The guy will not be remembered in a few months at all. Adam on the other hand will be as big as Carrie Underwood, sit back and watch. Adam Lambert is clearly the real winner here. AI is just a bs show, next season their ratings will tank after this happened last night. Rock on Adam! Can’t wait until you tour.

Tony | 5/21/2009, 8:47 pm EST

As a gay man, I find the “homophobe conspiracy” to be too funny. Adam may be gay, and certainly seems like an awesome guy. But as a singer, he is, to put it very mildly, an acquired taste, one I never acquired. And I honestly always found Kris to be a little boring for me. But my opinion changed after his re-working of “Heartless”. kris is still a bit dull for me (for you), but that performance helped me see the guy, when he’s in the right zone, can flourish.

Adam isn’t a guy I believe that can translate on record. His appeal comes on the stage. And though he’ll have some success, those successes aren’t likely to happen, if we’re being honest, on an album. Kris might not be the flashiest Idol, but I expect we’re going to be surprised by him.

But a conspiracy to block a “Gay Idol”? That’s a load of crap, and I think people know it. If the gay Idol could sing without going into a banshee death wail, the gay Idol would have won in a walk.

Mustang chef | 5/21/2009, 8:49 pm EST

Well, well, while we all look for reasons of why and why not, the producers are scrambling to get next seasons show of 90%hype and 10% bull going. If Idol can keep the world entertained while it goes to hell in a handbasket, more power to it.

Bufbills | 5/21/2009, 8:49 pm EST

Adam deserved to win. He was the best thing to happen EVER to AI. His performance with KISS last night was incredible – and I was never a KISS fan. I did hear some people against him who were homophobes; also some who thought he screamed too much. When you watched the video of Kris at home in Arkansas, it was all kids – really young kids – cheering him on!!!I can’t wait to buy Adam’s CD’s, see him in concert, etc. He is a true entertainer. He is David Bowie, Steven Tyler all wrapped up on one package. Love you Adam!!!

aw | 5/21/2009, 8:49 pm EST

I really liked both Adam and Kris; for different reasons. I liked Adam’s style and sound. Don’t know that I could listen to it all the time though. Also liked Kris’s reworkings of songs. He’s going to do well in the studio I think.

I don’t think it can be said that Adam was the more talented. They are different from each other and extremely talented at what each does. Different genre and that’s like comparing apples to…kiwis.

Can we get over the whole homophobia thing please? And while we’re at it, Adam has made it clear he’s not admitting anything, at least not yet. He’s letting people speculate so why is everyone else trying to out him? He may be bisexual for all we know. I don’t care…I just like the guy and I’m old enough to be his mother.

None of this is new, we had Adam-style performers back in the 70’s and 80’s so what is the big deal?

Best of luck to both of them. I hope they both achieve good things.

Adriana | 5/21/2009, 8:49 pm EST

I have been following Canadian and American Idol all theses years and have never seen a better contestant than Adam. It has been really dissapointing to see him out. He was an undiscovered star that luckily come to the show and I am sure he will be the most succesfull of them all.

Angelene | 5/21/2009, 8:50 pm EST

Adam is a STAR and is destined for great things.

Adam owned the stage week in week out on Idol and was heads and shoulders above all other contestants, and frankly many that get played on the radio.

Kris is not a great singer, he’s not even a good singer. He would be the guy that was the “star” of his high school music class and that’s it.

I’d have rathered Adam rock it on the finals with a Whole Lotta Love reprise .. but I am afraid that Adam didn’t win because of bigotry.
And that just disgusts me.

Brenda | 5/21/2009, 8:50 pm EST

Sad, sad, sad.
When a multi-talented man like Adam Lambert is bumped for a one-trick pony like Kris Allen, there’s something wrong with the whole darned thing.

I’m certainly not slagging Kris, I like his voice and he seems like a great guy. But, I truly cannot remember one single piece that he performed. On the other hand, I CAN remember every single one that Adam blew out of the water and most of the songs that Danny sang.

So, for me it boils down to memorability and a magic touch with every piece performed.
Adam has it in spades and Kris doesn’t. End of story.

What did I say? Tony’s ADAM LAMBERT WILL BE THE FIRST TO WIN A GRAMMY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111

Debbie | 5/21/2009, 8:51 pm EST

I would Love nothing more than to see Adam Lambert on the cover of rolling Stone! He is the most talented contestant ever! He is Money for whomever signs him! I would love to see him in a movie too, as he would be excellent! Cast him in a Twilight movie, or a Star Trek Movie, or a Johnny Depp Movie and there will be packed houses! It is probably better he didnt win, so that he wont have contractual obligations after the show. I love his confidence..It is not overstated but down to earth. He knows what is important. Remarkable talent!!!

Anonymous | 5/21/2009, 8:52 pm EST

We all know who should have won…that’s what matters…and Adam knows it too…I think that’s why he was able to smile the way he did in the end!!!

gokey fan | 5/21/2009, 8:52 pm EST

I liked Gokey’s vocals the best (it’s a singing contest?) and my votes went to Kris. I never liked Adam’s voice. I think he is at heart an actor and he acted his way into being a rock singer. It seemed to me that he became more convinced by his own performance each week as Simon and other judges slathered on the praise. From his clothing, hair, and arrangement rip-offs, I think he got caught up in his own performance. I think he is more confused at this point. He wouldn’t be the first actor to lose himself in his current role. If he has any brains he will use his celebrity to launch an acting career and stay away from the whole screech thing. I just found his screeching off-key and unpleasant. Kris has authentic musical talent and music is his main thing. He seems completely sincere. Alison was the real rock star on the show this year.

Annie | 5/21/2009, 8:53 pm EST

If you google Adam and Kris, guess who has over 2 million more results? Adam’s “loss” is more compelling that Kris’s “win” just like his performances were more compelling all season. I don’t even remember Kris’s until he made top two and he seemed boring to me.

Tanya from Down Under | 5/21/2009, 8:53 pm EST

It has been many many years since I have seen talent such as Adam Lambert’s. Every week I waited for AI just to see his perfomance and was never disappointed. His unique, otherworldly brilliance touched me and the most wonderful part of being introduced to this new icon was to note he also possess’ a beautiful soul. I cant wait for his CD’s, tours, broadway shows, film clips etc. Please ensure you come to Australia.Thank you Adam the world is a better place for having you in it!

shike-chi zen | 5/21/2009, 8:54 pm EST

American Idol is not a talent show. It is a voting comeptiton. It’s a shame that Adam’s fans didn’t vote as many times as Kris’. The voting system for American Idol should be changed. Total vote counts does not truly reflect how many people really voted. I voted >1000 times (4hrs) in 3 different phone lines. If 100,000 people did that, that’s 100 million votes already. ADAM won the world!!! and Kris won Arkansas. Adam is CAPTIVATING..!! All the rest sounds the same…BORING, except Allison.
ADAM is a MEGA-STAR and he will rock the world…forevermore!!!!

Solista Chance | 5/21/2009, 8:54 pm EST

ADAM will ROCK ‘EM. He does not need the title for that. Anyone with two ears and eyes could hear that he was clearly a more talented vocalist, artist, and innovator. Still… I am still in shock. what a boring dud America turned out to be…voting for Kris Allen. or maybe that was just his wife voting 60,000 times.

Adam did not lose american idol. He achieved what he set out to do. He wants to give the viewers to like the music they thought they did not like. I would never thought I’d like the rock screaming. Now I love to all
his music and thanks him and idol for this gift. My children would not believe I’d like Kiss. I’ll be a fan forever.

adam outsang everyone from day one & this ending is a upset but for all us lambert fans it’s not the end it has just begun kris will rise to sturdum a bit but the better man will prevail keep on rockin adam lambert!!!!!

RomoFo | 5/21/2009, 8:56 pm EST

At first, I was so upset, mostly thinking that he lost because he is gay, then I thought, it is better for Adam not to be tied down to that title, American Idol. I bet there are so many can and can not do in that contract, that it would limit Adam’s creativity. And if you look at that Kris kid, well, he fits that Idol robotic role much better. Adam is/was the true artist on American Idol, the key word being art.

Murylinda | 5/21/2009, 8:56 pm EST

Mad World was my choice for Adam’s final song, it’s that hauntingly beautiful song that riveted my attention to him in the first place and told me where his soul grew from, his rock songs are his fantasy escapes. I’m ashamed of the part of America that didn’t support this wonderful young man, I’ve found my ‘Star’ and he’s far too bright for American Idol alone.

clvpoprocks | 5/21/2009, 8:57 pm EST

I too saw Simon’s face. He had a look of disgust. He didn’t even stand where the other judges were. Adam deserved the win,but Kris NEEDED the win. Now perhaps he will have more freedom in his music choices because after all, I’m sure he will sell millions.

Blue Collar Conservative | 5/21/2009, 8:57 pm EST

Perhaps if Adam gave up the masscara and black nail polish he might have won Idol. But honestly, not every gay man dresses like a freek show contestant. It’s a singing contest and Adam was the best singer. He lost because his “walk on the wild side” appearance and cocky swager turned off a lot of people. Like it or not.

G | 5/21/2009, 8:57 pm EST

Kris is just another singer with a guitar. One among the many thousands in the music industry. Adam is something else. He is like Freddie Mercury and Steven Tyler rolled into one. He has that unique talent, artistry, and charisma that make a Rock Legend. Someone who will be remembered for ages. Adam has the complete package. Now thinking about it, maybe it was a blessing in disguise that Adam didn’t get the title. He doesn’t need to be bound by the expectations of being the winner of American Idol. He can continue on being his true amazing self doing amazing rocking!

ghettoman | 5/21/2009, 8:58 pm EST

Adam Lambert has a vocal gift that has not been seen in decades. The tonal quality, exceptional control, range, and his natural or honed gift of lyrical interpretation is simply unreal. Clearly, AI has never had such a performer before. Why did he lose? Chris, who is also a talented singer, is the boy-next-door and sexy as hell. He’s humble, nice, heartfelt, all-American. Adam is coy, provocative, alluring, and thus threatening–things most people in this country can not only appreciate but love (listen to the audiences). Why did he lose? All I know is that I’ve watched AI from the beginning. Clay Aiken, a superior singer, came in second in season 2. In the years I’ve watched, I’ve never voted before. I did attempt to vote Tuesday night. All three numbers were busy 1 1/2 hours after the show ended. The numbers for Chris were open (as my husband can attest). I couldn’t get through yet he lost. How many other people experienced the same thing. Seacrest acknowledged at the beginning of the show that some people had difficultly getting through. AI is at heart a “middle America” show. Coincidental, huh?

T-Bird | 5/21/2009, 8:59 pm EST

The outcome of AI this season was so jaw droppingly wrong as to invite suspicion. Anyone would have to be deaf, dumb, blind and stupid not to recognize where the talent lay.

I think that ‘talent’ was not completely the deciding factor, rather that the American public may have felt that Adam was being promoted unequally. That he was the obvious judges choice. But really I think that
America voted on moral lines – not on talent
this year and thats a shame.

For Adam, perhaps this ‘loss’ is actually the perfect resolution because he won’t be bound by contractual obligations to change
who he is or what he does. He is essentially a free agent – who has had amazing exposure for almost six months.

I would imagine that agents and promoters, record labels and any rock band without a lead are lining up to sign him.

I for one will support him by buying his albums and seeing him in concert where ever I can.

Its unfortunate for Kris because his win was never really for him – rather a vote against the kind of performer that Adam is. Kris,
as sweet as he is, has seemed way beyond his depth most of the season and in once the AI money and exposure run out will blend back into society.

Adam is the single most amazing contestant American Idol has had since its inception. He is a force to be reckoned with and we will hear much more of him – without a doubt.

I have to admit that despite my essay on this subject, I am dumbfounded as to how this could have gone so very badly wrong.

Yes, Skylar – you are right about that too.

Anonymous | 5/21/2009, 8:59 pm EST

America plays it too safe.
They went for the obvious choice – someone who could easily make it in the music industry and be a typical safe artist.
Adam could have been so much more and changed the perception of typical american idols.
No wonder America has the stereotype of being the least intelligent nation in the world.

Texas Mom for Adam Lambert | 5/21/2009, 8:59 pm EST

The only reason I watched AI was to see and hear Adam Lambert. I liked Allison and Danny, but Adam is #1. The other guy was always “the other guy.” I couldn’t remember Kris Allen’s name until the last week or so. I will always think of him as “the other guy.” On a positive note, at least Adam won’t have to make a tame, oatmeal textured American Idol album. Those AI albums tend to stifle the style of AI’s best singers. I look forward to hearing the Adam Albert we all love on his first album. I hope it comes out very soon! (And before “the other guy’s.”

Anyone who tries to play the “gay” card as the reason Adam did not win, had better wake up fast…this is not 1950! He is a pure entertainer with a superb talent! Who ever signs him will be very smart! I beleive he will tour the world after the Idol tour!
I would be the first in line to see him anywhere! Wow! All I can say is WOW!

Brady | 5/21/2009, 9:01 pm EST

I don’t think it should matter whether your gay or not. adam sings like a guardian of rock. he has an original voice. Adam should have won because he has talent and skill. there are very few people in this world who can sing like him. American idol is suppose to be judged on singing ability not sexuality. Adam is an inspiration too many. He will be known for ages.

rlm-Ohio | 5/21/2009, 9:01 pm EST

What a bunch of crap. I am a 57-year-old conservative white woman who voted Adam all the way. Kris is a very talented guy without question, but Adam has tremendous talent and a stage presence that just cannot be outdone. I guess teeny boppers really do rule the world: Pretty sad, and frightening as well.

David Niel | 5/21/2009, 9:02 pm EST

Quoting Adam Wednesday am: “I feel like I won by being in the finale… This morning, after coming in 2nd: “It’s all about ‘next’ and ‘tomorrow’ “. What a stud. What a smart man. People, HE WON the competition, EVEN if he didn’t get the trophy. He’ll be able to get the hell out there and start entertaining us a LOT more quickly than if he has to sing that phreaky “coronation” song a zillion times, which could kill anyone but Miley Cyrus… HE WON!!! He got tens and tens of millions of dollars of international media exposure, a five month showcase of his vast talent and personality, and won’t have the specter of “Idol” dragging him down. Kris will be fine and do well. Adam will kick ass in the entertainment business for a LONG time to come. ROCK ON DUDE!

memorable | 5/21/2009, 9:02 pm EST

people say Kris is not memorable… but I can’t remember anything other than MAD WORLD from Adam.

Kris’s version of AINT NO SUNSHINE, HEARTLESS, SHE WORKS HARD FOR THE MONEY, and FALLING SLOWLY are all memorable.

Soutwest | 5/21/2009, 9:03 pm EST

I watched AI with my wife (the true Adam fan) this year, and got hooked. Adam’s talent is much greater than that of Chris. I agree with Skylar that America may not be ready for a gay Idol, but rock and roll is ready for whatever band he joins or creates after the AI tour.

Starfire | 5/21/2009, 9:03 pm EST

You can 20/20 hindsight this all you want. When it comes down to it, the folks that voted got what they wanted. Kris is a very talented artist. I hope that he does well. I may even buy his album when it comes out. (Even though I don’t care for “No Boundaries”.) But when you look at Kris and Adam side by side, they are two very, very different types. I could care less about Adam’s sexualilty. He is an awesomely talented, poised, gracious person. He knows what he wants and he knows how to deliver. Now that he has had this exposure on national tv, he will be a big star. And that may be all he wanted all along.

Danelle | 5/21/2009, 9:04 pm EST

Adam didn’t win. . .but neither did Hudson and Daughtery. Look what happened to their careers! Adam is only getting started.

Warhorsevixen | 5/21/2009, 9:05 pm EST

Shame on Idol for being the farce of a rigged show they are and not crowning Adam KING OF ROCK! He will go on to make millions without them and tour the world with LOTS OF EAGER FANS like me eager to attend their first ADAM concert. I don’t believe for a second about the Arkansas voting crap, they had to think of some line of bs to tell people and that’s what they came up with. ADAM is too good for that show, GO ADAM GO AND SET THE WORLD ON FIRE!!! :D :D:D:D

Pat | 5/21/2009, 9:07 pm EST

Idol needs to change its voting–no more of the unlimited calls so a few people with a lot of time on their hands “decide” who the winner is. Adam Lambert is one of the most incredible performers I have ever seen & should have won.

Lori | 5/21/2009, 9:07 pm EST

This is how we wound up with eight years of George Bush. Ignorant people should not be allowed to vote!! This was my first time watching American Idol and will probably be my last. Obviously, winning has nothing to do with talent. I looked forward every week to seeing how Adam would top his previous performance. He never disappointed. Adam, you are truly a winner in every sense of the word. You know it and Kris knows it, and the uptight conservatives who voted based on religion know it.

Texas Mom for Adam Lambert | 5/21/2009, 9:07 pm EST

I agree that America played it too safe. I don’t think American voters know the industry at all, though. The industry will tear “the other guy” apart pretty quickly, because he doesn’t have strong enough chops to last. I think there is a distinction between the television show “American Idol” and the record/music industry–a huge difference. I am often multi-tasking while watching AI. When it gets boring I even read a book while it’s on. Whoever has the voice that makes me look up from what I am doing gets my vote, because a great voice raises the hairs on my arms and touches me to the core. That’s the one I always vote for. That’s why I voted for Adam. Adam is the true star of AI and there is a huge difference between a star and just a singer who won a talent show.

Sarah | 5/21/2009, 9:08 pm EST

I love Adam’s performances but at the end of the day, I’d never buy his album. See him live? Absolutely. But I don’t need an album with him screaming at me for an hour. Kris consistantly delivered songs that people wanted to hear over and over even if his live show wasn’t as dynamic. Kris will make his money off of album sales. Adam will make money off of tours and endorsements. He’ll get a better record deal losing than he would have winning and he doesn’t have to sing “no boundries” ever again.

glamourpuss | 5/21/2009, 9:08 pm EST

I am not surprised at the outcome–after all, this is the same country who elected George W. Bush president….TWICE!!!

A.I. | 5/21/2009, 9:09 pm EST

I hope people that said Adam should have won voted. Idol is not fixed. It all depends on who gets the most votes from the fans THAT CALL OR TEXT. I voted for Adam because he’s awesome and will be around performing and singing for a long time.

Anonymous | 5/21/2009, 9:10 pm EST

AI clearly manipulated this win. For me , the mask was off. I reviewed all the seasons I have watched and in the clear light of reality ,and they always have. They had an accountant looking guy come out to validate the votes, as if to say mere counting validates fairness. They can very easily control how many votes actually get through on which lines.
No gay has ever won. No Jewish person has ever won. No Hindu. No Muslim. I predict they killed AI last night. I feel bad for all the young people they have manipulated over the years. But AI never, ever has the last word. We do.

Vanessa | 5/21/2009, 9:11 pm EST

I dont even kow what to say. I really dnt think kris has any talent. when you hear him on the radio you will never recognize his voice. He’s not unique in any way. Adam on the other hand is just wow, to amazing for words. kris won for his looks and nothing else, adam desreved to win becuz of his talent. america is wack. everyone will see aftr adam becomes a legend and kris becomes a nobody in the music industry.

Das | 5/21/2009, 9:12 pm EST

Ever hear of “David and Goliath” story? Time and again David wins. There always have been Goliath’s supporters too. Well, Kris won

Miriam Emedan | 5/21/2009, 9:12 pm EST

Kris Allen doesn’t come close to Adam Lambert’s talent. I was very disappointed with the results. To say that Kris won because of his religion is the most outlandish comment yet. Who cares what the religious and/or sexual persuasion of an artist is? Was this a singing competition or a nice guy contest? Adam has a stage presence that Kris lacks. Adam’s voice is strong by comparison to Kris’s. Adam’s career is set. We will see him win Grammys and Oscars in the future. Kris will be forgotten.

Happy2 | 5/21/2009, 9:12 pm EST

I voted for Adam all season, though I’m much beyond the age of the “tween” block. I tried to vote for nearly 3-1/2 hours Tuesday night on all 3 of the phone numbers for Adam and got only busy signals the entire time. I voted for him because he blew me away, not because the judges liked him. But I’m not mad that he didn’t take home the title. I hope this opens more doors for him, giving him more freedom to develop his artistry his way. I would pay for tickets to an Adam Lambert concert in a heartbeat! He is a true showman and was completely in his own element with both Kiss and Queen last night, while also outstanding with quieter pieces like Tracks of My Tears or Mad World. I don’t think he was as surprised by the results as Kris was – I expected Danny’s voters to go to Kris and I’ll bet Adam did too. Adam will do just great without the title while maybe it will boost Kris’ confidence level – Adam already had plenty of that.

Rita | 5/21/2009, 9:12 pm EST

I am a 58 year old Chrisian woman, who never listens to rock, but I feel in love with Adam. Adam is a better singer. He is a phenomenal performer.
My 61 year old, red neck, country. southern Bible belt Christian, husband who only listens to country, felt that Adam should have won.
Adam will be a BIG STAR. We will buy his CD’S.

Michele | 5/21/2009, 9:13 pm EST

I don’t think it’s fair to put Kris down because people are disappointed that Adam didn’t win. I thought they both did a great job, but they are so different. I agree that Kris and Danny were more run-of-the-mill typical pop-type singers and Adam had the star power. Having said that, the AI enterprise has lost it’s innocence of the first season when a nice, unknown, “sweet” young woman named Kelly won. Rags to riches story and all that. Now, we know that a person doesn’t have to win to do well. Jennifer Hudson, Chris Daughtry, Clay Aiken – they all did better than the winners of their season. Good luck to both men! I’d love to see Adam on stage in musical theater…goose bump time!

Keep it real | 5/21/2009, 9:14 pm EST

The voters are the buyers of music, not the judges who flare and don’t even vote, just like y’all. Kris is THE WINNER. digest it. I agree with Das, he is like David and he won.

I do believe that Chris will be forgotten like Ruben, Fantasia and Taylor Hicks and Adam will rise above.. just like Chris Doughtry.

rlm-Ohio | 5/21/2009, 9:16 pm EST

To quote anonymous (who cannot spell the word “anonymous”), “My faith would not allow me to vote for Adam Lambert. God’s word is VERY clear about SIN. There is a darkness in Adam that needs redemption!! Just google his name and you will see the MANY pictures that come up. I DO NOT want that kind of role model or Idol for my children!! Adam your AWESOME but I had to give my vote to Kris!!”

Let me tell you Anonymous, that the darkness is with YOU, not Adam. My God encourages tolerance, compassion and acceptance, not condemnation. Judgement is to be made by God, not by man. Who the hell are you to make any kind of judgement as to the “darkness” of his soul? This humble young man has more raw talent than anyone has seen in a long, long time. I believe there is a passage in the Bible that states “he who is without sin should cast the first stone”. I won’t be casting any stones, and neither should you. Adam Lambert is a phenomenal talent, something we should all embrace without making judgements. Keep your pious beliefs where they belong, not on this blog. It has been an honor and a privilege to watch Adam perform this season, and I canot wait to purchase his first CD.

erica | 5/21/2009, 9:16 pm EST

so tell me what happened in american idol last night. for all i know i was clearly dreaming,.is it true dat america actually chose a guy with no talent wats so ever to represent them. i wud have rather seen gokey win for goodness gracious, if not adam. kris knows he has no talent, see how far your looks will get you. last year was already a fail, but this time america was just plain stupid. this is the last year i will watch american idol. america just has bad taste i guess…

SoCalGal | 5/21/2009, 9:17 pm EST

You can’t be serious…Adam Lambert screamed–not sang–most of his songs. And his tongue hung out of his mouth while he did it. Save me from vocal histrionics. Give me the vocal dignity of Kris Allen any day.

Lucy | 5/21/2009, 9:17 pm EST

So nothing to do with 38 million votes coming from a state with a population of 2 million then? Nothing to do with the use of the mobile based powervoting system that was being advertised as “undetectable” by its Arkansas developer then?

Adam, or anyone, wouldn’t stand a chance against that. He would have had to get almost every vote from the rest of the country to win.

BS | 5/21/2009, 9:17 pm EST

Why PPL complain they can’t vote? I vote a few times, easy text message it. Oh! it costs money…then quit bickering you couldn’t vote, brokeass

I believe AI killed itself last night. I feel sorry for all the kids they have manipulated all theses years. But AI does not have the last word, we do.

The result was a BIG JOKE!!! There is lot of things that need to be doubted: first, Ryan didnt mention the percentage division and he called ADAM again in the center as SUperstar!!! what is this? — EXPLAIN!!!!!!!!!!!

Texas Mom for Adam Lambert | 5/21/2009, 9:20 pm EST

I agree with Skylar. Skylar, you are right on point regarding the AI contract. Adam will get a much better contract. By the way I am a Christian, a “born-again” Christian, too, who regrets that fundamentalists and some extreme conservatives keep trying to hijack that term from Jesus Christ who embodies the grace of God and dear old John Wesley who inspired not only the Methodist movement but holiness and pentecostal movements, all of which emphasize grace. In a talent show one votes on talent, not personality or personal identity. That’s just wrong–for those who say they know Adam is the most talented but they voted for the “truth”? That’s really bad logic, if one is voting in a talent show. It is illogical, because it defies the truth of having said one agrees that Adam has more talent. Something to think about.

John D | 5/21/2009, 9:20 pm EST

Evidently, according to various news reports that I’ve been reading, people in the state of Arkansas were extremely well organized, and organized to use fast serial voting equipment. American Idol as a matter of simple fairness really ought to find a way to disallow this sort of thing. Its cheating, pure and simple. Surely software exists that will recognize the source of a phone call and reject duplicate calls from the same source. I’m a 64-year-old ex-musician, and usually I find myself bored by the final winner, who always seems to be an inoffensive piece of pop whitebread. Out of curiosity, more than anything else, because I like to see what the kids now are doing musically, I’ve watched AI on-and-off since it began, and this year I almost didn’t watch at all. But not only did I end up watching every week, this actually became the first year I’ve ever bothered to vote, because Adam was the most interesting, original and talented contestant I’ve ever seen. Its also the last year I’m going to bother watching, because when someone who generates the excitement that Adam did can’t win, it means the show has become totally irrelevant. Even Kris seems to know it. Simon knows it – go back and look at his face when the winner was announced. I’d advise Simon to quit now while he’s ahead – while he still has some credibility. And I’d advise AI to either rerun the vote, or fix their system. They’ve become useless as a source of information about current pop culture. They’ve lost me as a viewer.

kitty | 5/21/2009, 9:20 pm EST

TOKYO loves ADAM LAMBERT !!!!!!!!!!!!

Mike in Seattle | 5/21/2009, 9:21 pm EST

I called ten times and only got one vote through for Adam. The rest I got a busy signal. I tried every fifteen minutes for a couple of hours.

The text messages killed us. If you didn’t have ATT, you could not text. You never get a busy signal when texting. You can store the number and repeatedly text thousands of times.

The voting method has to change. The texting, from only one carrier made the voting way more biased for tween girls, who live for texting.

Both finalists were great. I loved Adam and Kris’s harmony the couple of times they sang together.

Dumb-Dumb | 5/21/2009, 9:21 pm EST

Kris is Unique, Adam had talent but his mouth not just sang, it went wrong places, ewwww. You guys must be crazy to embrace that. YUCK. Some one here mentioned about David and Goliath i fully agree

Katie | 5/21/2009, 9:22 pm EST

I loved watching ADAM all season long. What an incredible talent. I am an educated, responsible, 46 year old mother of two children. I felt like he brought light back into this show. He is the reason I watched. I worried he was not “mainstream” enough to win. I guess I was right. Poor Kris looked like a fish gasping for air when his name was announced. At that point he must have realized it was a popularity contest (fueled by tween and conservative voters) and less a talent contest.

I hope ADAM realizes that he has MANY MANY fans who look forward to seeing / hearing him in the future.

Raysa | 5/21/2009, 9:22 pm EST

Well, I’m a Christian and an Adam fan ALL THE WAY! I wa shocked with the results last night, but HEY! Adam exudes talent, he doesn’t need to win AI in order to succeed in show business. His talent says it all. I love to see him perfom and love “everything” he’s about. He couldn’t be more perfect as an artist. I will be front row and center at every concert he’s performing, for sure!

Michele | 5/21/2009, 9:23 pm EST

Hey, “Anonymous,” if you’re so strong in your religious convictions, then why not sign your name? What is that biblical verse that has to do with “you who are without sin, cast the first stone?” Would Jesus have judged or would have have loved? Today’s Christians drove me from religion. Yuck.

Annonymous | 5/21/2009, 8:57 pm EST

IF this is what really happened, KUDOS to the Christian community for standing up and supporting Kris!!!
I can honestly say that I LOVE Adam Lambert and that I think hands down is the better entertainer. GREAT Singer…I loved him all the way thru. I Planned on giving hm my vote right up to the very end. However, in the end I had to do what was right….Stand for TRUTH!! My faith would not allow me to vote for Adam Lambert. God’s word is VERY clear about SIN. There is a darkness in Adam that needs redemption!! Just google his name and you will see the MANY pictures that come up. I DO NOT want that kind of role model or Idol for my children!! Adam your AWESOME but I had to give my vote to Kris!!

ADAM SHOULD HAVE WON. but whatever! he’s gonna be much more bigger than kris allen- if kris himself said it!

Anonymous | 5/21/2009, 9:24 pm EST

first off.

no one cares if he’s gay or not. he is an AMAZING singer and deserved it.

second off.

he was consistent. kris was not. don’t get me wrong, I really like kris….but i LOVE adam. He sang his heart out every show.

third off.

he’s going to be signed by someone. and when he does…sooo many people are going to buy his cds.

Coral | 5/21/2009, 9:24 pm EST

WOW! I am writing from Australia and I’m completely surprised by people posting as though Adam Lambert’s career is over when it is only just beginning. It isn’t just graciousness that made Adam happy for Kris’s win. Adam is an exceptional talent…he needed the exposure that AI provided. He did NOT need the restrictions of being put in the American Idol white bread box and having to record the truly mediocre anthem.

It is the best of all possible results for bothsingers. Kris would certainly never have been heard of again if he had lost – and a talent like Adam’s is unstoppable.

For those screaming “Homophobia” consider this. The PTB in AI knew Adam was gay when they gave him a top 36 spot. They knew it could be an issue in him winning. But they also knew that the talent was so great it had to be seen by the largest audience possible.
We’ve been privileged to see the dawn of true superstar. We’ll still be talking about him and paying a fortune for concert tickets in 10 – maybe 20 years time.

If you’re truly an Adam Lambert fan, swallow your sense of injustice, your rationalisation of his gay personna ( who really gives a f**k?) and be GRATEFUL he was runner up. Now let him soar to heights unimaginable in AI mediocreland.

Sierra | 5/21/2009, 9:25 pm EST

I had never watched AI — ever. Someone told me about Adam and I went to YouTube and listened. I was amazed. I tuned in. I even voted. I am a demographic that AI is never going to capture and I was transfixed. I don’t know the politics of the voting, or even the strategy. But Adam should have been the winner. He’s a superior performer and singer. Period.

I’ll never watch AI again. Frankly, with that hideous excuse for a “first single” song that was written for the winner, I’m glad he didn’t win. He’s free to go on and do what he wants, now that he’s got the following and visibility.

But as for Idol and their clueless audience. Pass.

Texas Mom for Adam Lambert | 5/21/2009, 9:25 pm EST

My husband got his cell-phone votes in. After he got his in I tried to phone my votes in on my cell phone until midnight and the line was always busy on all three lines. Last week I got five votes in for Adam and could not get any more votes in for him after that when I tried. What’s this about unlimited voting? I got “sorry, blah, blah, beep” messages last week after 5 or so votes for Adam? Then on Saturday I heard a friend’s mother and niece from Adam’s home town had voted 800 and 600 times respectively. Is that for real? What’s going on?

barbara | 5/21/2009, 9:25 pm EST

ADAM is the WINNER no matter what. I tried to vote but i couldnt get through the line. I think someone blocked his votes I think the other guy needed to win because if he wasnt helped he wasnt going to get anywere. YOU ROCK ADAM

Nicole | 5/21/2009, 9:26 pm EST

Adam Lambert deserved to win. From the first time I watched Adam perform I knew would be an icon. Adam went into the competition wanting to win. He showed up every week like a rockstar. I respect Kris for the fact that he admitted that Adam should have won. I will not watch AI next season.

joan | 5/21/2009, 9:26 pm EST

last night was a travesty – there is no question that adam lambert is the best singer ever on idol – he will be one of the greatest rocker ever and kris will go back to kayoke bars – tuesday was a joke – the judges, except simon, never critiqued kris, but all stated that he improved over time – from what to what? to a mediocre singer/performer. it breaks my heart that citizens of our beautiful country can’t let go of their grip on prejudice and small-minded fear of someone who is different and fear of art

An Adam Supporter | 5/21/2009, 9:27 pm EST

Adam is the BEST I have ever heard. I can’t wait to hear more of him. I am and will continue to be one of his BIGGEST fans. He is already a star in my eyes.

penny | 5/21/2009, 9:29 pm EST

I am a 50 year old female I loved adam from week one I love his stage presence and enjoyed watching every week he will become a rock icon. Taylor hicks and kris allen who? I tried to call in votes itried for a hour. I didn’t get one vote in.he got exposure though rock on adam your the bomb. I can’t wait to see what’s next from you. I be in the line when you release your first c d.

Maria | 5/21/2009, 9:31 pm EST

I really want to eliminate this idea that adam screams. i don’t know if those who continue to write this comment fully understand music or the voice. adam is professionally and classically trained. If he so desired, he could become possibly the next greatest lyrical tenor – just listen to his Brigadoon. his voice is incredibly healthy, never strained, and perfectly set in his resonators. if you think he screams, you’ve clearly never heard rock. what most disappointed me about kris was that he strained his voice. he did not have any vibrato, which can be okay if you are singing quietly. but on big notes, you can see his throat popping out and his jaw locked. he therefore is confined to a extremely limited range. so say what you want about the contestants, but make sure you have more than an untrained ear to back them up. you can say that you don’t like it when he goes into his higher register. but you certainly can’t say he screams or is lacking in skill. his skill is unbelievable. i am not discounting your vote. you can pick who you like, that is your right. i am simply correcting your misconception of adam’s voice.

la | 5/21/2009, 9:32 pm EST

I voted for neither. Adam is not unlike many, many polished, experienced singers in music theater today. He has been performing for almost as long as Allison has been alive. For me, he was too dyed, made up, glittery, and screamy. Kris will not get far. He doesn’t have the talent or charisma that either of last season’s top two have. The judges didn’t help Adam by pushing him on the audience week after week, and declaring him the winner from the first. People don’t like that. It was rude to everyone else.

CB | 5/21/2009, 9:32 pm EST

The truth is that either Adam Lambert or Kris Allen could have won. They are two totally different performers. That is why it was such a close competition.

Lambert is a one-in-a-million vocalist and stage performer, but he is not a musician or songwriter. Allen has a lesser voice and a less showy stage personality, but he can play instruments and write and arrange songs.

One is a star. The other an artist. Who you like better is a personal preference. Both have what it takes to succeed in different ways.

And one other thing: both of these guys would be ashamed that their fans were such haters. If they did one thing together as a team, it was show American that a gay man and a straight man could be close friends, as well as competitors, without sexuality being an issue.

That lesson is their greatest accomplishment.

Outraged:response to the right | 5/21/2009, 9:33 pm EST

@ Annonymous | 5/21/2009, 8:57 pm EST.

You ignorant, uneducated, homophobic, bible-toting freak. What do you think you are, some kind of oracle? I’m guessing you live somewhere in the heartland of America and are certainly a part of the religious right fanatics who cloak themselves in a religious cape to shelter them from people or ideas they don’t understand.

There’s nothing wrong with Kris Allen, but he certainly is no Adam Lambert. Listen, I’m sure they both will do well, so it really doesn’t matter who wins the meaningless title of American Idol. As a matter of fact, winning American Idol and suffering from its kiss of death (namely falling off the face of the earth once your album drops – save for Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood) is probably worse than coming in runner up.

But what does matter are the values of Americans. Not voting for someone because of your religious beliefs is outdated, introverted and the exact kind of thinking which prevents this country from moving forward. Adam Lambert is certainly a role model: he’s a successful young man who has worked hard to get to where he is. Unlike the rest of America, he’s not sitting on his ass waiting for his unemployment check to come in the mail. I don’t care if he’s straight, gay, black, white, purple, polka dot, whatever. Frankly its nobody’s business and shouldn’t affect you. He’s open minded and certainly a better role model than you are to your children. The man can sing and has a hell of a lot of talent. And until people like you change your system of values, this country will never change. Get a clue. Its only the religious fanatics who claim “God” talks to them and possesses them to do something against their will or to carry out some of his wishes. There’s more than one God, and guess what – its all a scam and nobody cares what your beliefs are. Adam doesn’t need redemption, nor should he suffer due to your ignorance – you need to grow up and get a clue.

Phoebe | 5/21/2009, 9:33 pm EST

Sorry but I don’t see how Simon Fuller’s song choice can be held responsible in any way for this result. A Change is Gonna Come was hugely appropriate for Adam and was the performance of the night.

I don’t get this “nice guy” factor with Kris. Yes, Kris comes across as humble but so does Adam and he has far more reason not to be.

I don’t get the “cute” comments about Kris either. Adam is countless times better looking. Let’s face it, they’re both as unavailable as each other for different reasons.

It is a myth that Kris has more teenage fans than Adam. Kris certainly has more among the pre-teens who prefer their idols to resemble cuddly toys but most comments from teenagers around the net were pro-Adam, not Kris, and Adam threads on sites have more teenage members than Kris’. All teenagers I know, male and female, prefer Adam and think Kris is “well boring”.

The proof will be in sales. Those who voted for Kris for the wrong reasons are not going to go and buy his album because they didn’t actually like him anyway.

It’s Kris I feel sorry for in all of this.

HotforAdamzzn | 5/21/2009, 9:33 pm EST

Come on! Kris was consistant every week….are you talking about Kris or Adam here? And when Adam sang “A Change Is Gonna Come” for the first time ever…I agreed with Paula. That performance was phenomenal!!! We as a country that the world tries to immulate have failed. Yes we were tolerant enough to vote in a black president but not a gay idol. I am ashamed of all you fans that say you like Adam and didn’t vote for him and all you conservatives that voted against Adam just because he is gay. I am a straight 52 year old grandma and I never thought that twice in my lifetime I would see such a great entertainer and singer. The first was Elvis. He too scared those prissy little girls with that black hair, swiveling hips, and loud “rock’n'roll” music. Even dead he makes more money every year than the great Carrie Underwood! I say, Adam, you lost on a show but in our hearts you have won. I will follow your career with scrutiny. You are the “little boy that fell from heaven” and you wowed us! Thank you, Adam, for entertaining me for the last five months. I am looking forward to seeing you soon hanging out with the “stars” because you are one.

Fat Nebraska Mom | 5/21/2009, 9:34 pm EST

I don’t care who won. I just want me a bucket of some of that new crispy grilled chicken from KFC along with some mashed potatoes in the gravy and corn on the cob. Mmmm. Adam Lambert can kiss my ass!

Ziggy | 5/21/2009, 9:34 pm EST

I feel politically betrayed … how indicative of fear and injustice is the verdict … something has to give and i hope there is enough compulsion to follow both Adam and his narrative of mythic futurism through to something fun and different … what an embodiment of hope he is and what an empty result to possibility … Ethics, nomads and ritual xxx

Colorado PFLAG Mom for Adam | 5/21/2009, 9:34 pm EST

Kris = American Idol

Adam = American Icon

… and I’ll take the Icon anyday. His innovative and haunting approach to familiar ballads was deeply moving, and he re-energized and brought excitement back to R&R classics. He is an entertainer, and one I’d happily pay money to see. At age 51, I’m very picky who I’ll spend money to see. He would be well worth the ticket. And Adam, if your interested, I’d love to introduce you to my son!

Kims Deeler | 5/21/2009, 9:35 pm EST

Though I am for the ‘rock guy’ every year, they all end up making shit records. For some reason i have faith Adam might be able to change that streak– IF he can get creative control of the record (unlikely/impossible)

"America" Got It Wrong | 5/21/2009, 9:35 pm EST

I’m a 50-something Mom who is an Adam fan and did vote over twenty times Tues. night. I don’t know how to do the “power voting” that obviously skewed the results. I think that A.I. should limit the number of votes per line in order to have a fair and REAL outcome.

maureen | 5/21/2009, 9:36 pm EST

I am a 60 year old grandmother and I have seen a lot of talent in my years. I have been thoroughly entranced every week by Adam, his brilliance and pure talent.
Don’t any of you worry about Adam. He knows who he is and will continue to grow his God given talent.
I truly predict we have witnessed a star who will be remembered, copied, and worshipped for many years.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart, Adam. You gave America a boost in a very difficult time. Congratulations!! You ARE a true winner.

urthux | 5/21/2009, 9:36 pm EST

They are two different artist, Lambert is the show type of guy belting out high notes making the stage his own world and nobody in the idol history tops that, however, Allen is a soul singer that you may not be able to remember him singing on stage but definitely your heart remembers it…At the end of the day after hearing and looking into magnificient views we just need to forget those things and in silence we like to hear songs that pleases our mind and soul…

Annie | 5/21/2009, 9:36 pm EST

Does anyone believe this season will be remembered as the Kris Allen season. Adam outshone everyone from auditions to the results show. He was googled 3 times more. His ebay memorabilia was legions beyond the others. I really believe something shady went on here. This was the Adam Lambert season and everyone knows it.

Carrie | 5/21/2009, 9:37 pm EST

I liked both Adam and Kris. They both are good singers. I would have liked it if both could have won. In fact I liked the top four and hated to see any of them go. But after seeing Adam each week doing the same screaming when ever it had a chance became very boring and predictable. In fact his songs all started sounding the same. Kris on the other hand can sing all styles and has a more soothing voice and could record a cd that I would love to buy.I too was surprised and thought Adam would win hands down because of the response from the judges but I’m glad that Kris won because his style is more to my liking. He’s a very likable guy with a cool voice and I think he’ll be great.

mtom | 5/21/2009, 9:37 pm EST

Ok, here is the deal.. Adam can sing and he will be a singer, there is no question about that, but he can sing a few genre’s well. However he has no skills with an instrument and I didn’t see a lot emotions in his singing but rather a lot of effort in trying to do the scream. I always liked his stage presence but towards the end he was getting too PREDICTABLE (i didn’t want to hear the scream any more!)

As far as Kris, he I think is a true MUSICIAN and I started to see a lot more emotions in his singing as the AI came to an end. I don’t know about you all, I always liked some one that can do more than just sing.

i think they will both have a great career going forward, but I was a betting man looking to make money , i would put it on Kris since will sell more records since he can strike a chord with a lot more people with his voice and style rather than Adam.

I feel that the number of people that will continue to buy Adams 2nd album will be less compare to kris.

Hey I am not Simon so this is just my opinion..

ophu | 5/21/2009, 9:38 pm EST

The final two wasn’t about a competition between Allen and Lambert, but rather a competition between their fans. Multiple votes are permitted, even encouraged (hey, you think you can vote on AI for free?) In the end, it came down to which group of fans was most determined to see their favorite win, and talent and charisma and even singing no longer had anything to do with it. I’m sure that Kris Allen is a nice guy. I really hate to see him saddled with singing that mediocre song for his first single, since it’s far more in Adam’s range. His fans have screwed him over, unfortunately. But hey, at least he’s a winner on TV. I hope he has a decent second single ready for release, because I’d like to see him make it.

twinmom | 5/21/2009, 9:38 pm EST

Adam is by far the most gifted and talented contestent ever to appear on AI. I don’t think I’ll ever be ever to watch AI again unless the producers change the voting procedures. Anyone ever thought of having the judges have a small say in the finals…aren’t they the experts?

texan for Adam | 5/21/2009, 9:39 pm EST

Did anyone notice the stand-off-ish demeanor of Kris’s wife in the “home town tour” clips? I think Kris will soon have to chose between being a star or keeping his wife. She will be too jealous of his career. Adam will end up being the global super-star that he already is.

KD | 5/21/2009, 9:40 pm EST

Compare the posts here that are pro Adam vs. pro Kris….were you people not voting or is this whole clambake fixed? Adam was robbed! I hope he is a mega star soon!

Donna | 5/21/2009, 9:42 pm EST

I have been an AI fan from the beginning. I enjoyed watching the try outs and the performances every week. I think this will be my last season. Even though I think Kris is an excellent artist, we are reminded by the judges that this is a singing contest and last night said otherwise. Adam has an extraordinary voice and carried Kris through at least two of their duet performances. I feel that one point of view that has not been stated is that Simon affected the outcome by saying on several occasions that Adam was over dramatic. However, there was not one Adam performance that was as dramatic as Paula Abdul, Black-Eyed Peas, Rod Stewart, etc. Audiences have always enjoyed dramatic performances and that is supported by $$$ at the box office supporting artists in the past like, Cher, Michael Jackson, Kiss, Madonna, I could go on. If audiences perfered laid back, more subdued perfomances the proceeds would support that statistic. I personally will looking for Adam Lambert records and performances.

one voter | 5/21/2009, 9:42 pm EST

if it was one vote per person, adam would have won. adam lost because of the fact people are allowed to vote a gazillion times with autodials and dialing all night — period.

Sue | 5/21/2009, 9:43 pm EST

Adam Lambert has already had his big break when he was doing shows with Val Kilmer.

shan | 5/21/2009, 9:43 pm EST

Adam did not scream when he sang, its called a high note and he sang it very well. (If you think adam screams than steven tyler must be just screaming too right? haha not!)he never missed a note and was so so so unique with every song that he sang. I can’t believe he lost, and the I’m amazed that people were so “tied to their religion”or homophobic that they didn’t vote for the better singer in a singing competition. Its ridiculuos and I’m done with American Idol for good.

I love Adam | 5/21/2009, 9:43 pm EST

I have loved Adam from day 1. He was consistantly a solid and entertaining performer on the show!! Even tho he lost…he will make it BIG…I mean HUGE!! If he lost cuz he is reportedly gay…that is just sad. He is a gorgeous….charsmatic….guy with an infectious smile. I have a friend who is friends with him back in LA and says he is just the nicest guy you could know. So to lose cuz of sexual orientation is so wrong….isn’t this the search for the most talent? talent he has and an awsome career he WILL HAVE!!! Even the guitarist from Queen (ooohh my husband would be so upset cuz his name escapes me!!) looked impressed with the notes Adam sang!! You will go far!! LOVE YOU@

Mary Jo | 5/21/2009, 9:45 pm EST

Adam Lambert is so talented. I am 63 years old and to hear him sing with Queen was awesome to say the least. How could such a great singer that hit every note so perfectly not win for the talent that he potrayed? I won’t watch the show anymore. I am devistated that a truely great singer was not recognized.

Adam Lambert Lover! | 5/21/2009, 9:45 pm EST

Adam will forever be my Glam Rock God, and my American Idol! I can’t wait for his album to come out! He sounds like an angel when he sings, and I think he was the better performer/singer, definately!

hawaiilovesADAM | 5/21/2009, 9:45 pm EST

ADAM is the true IDOL and America knows it. I’m sad that the Idol people decided to withold the win from Adam know that he will outsell any idol winner that the show has seen in years. They should not continue on with the show after this season because no one in the future will ever be as talented and memorable as this young man. Adam, come to Hawaii and let us show you how much we love you by the number of sell out concerts you will have here!

Mildred | 5/21/2009, 9:46 pm EST

Hello. I’m a 102 year old great grandmother ready to kick the bucket and I also feel that Adam Lambert should have won. He is one cute whipper-snapper and has a beautiful singing voice that our Lord Jesus gave him. Oh well, the Lord works in mysterious ways and maybe this is a sign.

glambert4eva! | 5/21/2009, 9:49 pm EST

I love adam and i think that he deserved to win, me and all of my friends love adam and root for him every step of the way. I think kris was good but adam was 20 times better! and 20 times cuter!Who cares if adam is gay! Its just how you are and you can’t change it! People shouldn’t vote on their voice, not if your gay.

Mary Jo | 5/21/2009, 9:49 pm EST

How could such a great singer that hit every note so perfectly not win for the talent that he potrayed? I won’t watch the show anymore. I am devistated that a truely great singer was not recognized. Pina | 5/21/2009, 9:52 pm EST

Very disappointing .. All we wanted was to see Adam sing and the producers of AI just seemed to focus on everything else even when Adam was singing .. we saw more of the Idols that were voted off .. ADAM JUST GO TO TOURING RIGHT AWAY!! There are so many people that just want to listen to that incredible voice that you have!! Please start your tour in Massachusetts!

If Adam is reading these posts, I am sure he is thrilled that he has the granny vote locked up.

Will he get any endorsement deals with his legion of granny fans, or will sponsors prefer Kris’ younger fans.

Jules | 5/21/2009, 9:53 pm EST

This is to CB… about the “Adam not being an artist/musician thing?” While you had some valid points about Kris’ attribute, don’t you consider Adam’s amazing improvisation on songs and intuitive and perfectly expressive performances wonderful artistry and consider him an elite musician? i am a musician, singer, instrument player, and music teacher and think Adam has hit the nail on the head in these categories! You don’t need a dumb guitar in front of you to be a ‘musician!’ and you don’t need a book of written songs to be an ‘artist!” Right??

rbird | 5/21/2009, 9:53 pm EST

This year’s AI was the Adam Lambert Show. I have been an AI fan from day 1 and there has never been ANYONE as talented as Adam on the show. I was blow away every week! I am a huge Adam Lambert fan and can’t wait for HIS tour. FYI-I am a 54 year old straight christian woman (I even watch Sean Hannity-oh no-did I just type that???). Anyway-as Simon always says, “this is a singing competition”. Adam is the best singer-period. I may not agree with his lifestyle but that has nothing to do with my appreciation of his amazing artistry and entertaining stage presence. (Don’t slam me for that-I am not homophobic or a hate monger, ok?) I still haven’t been able to get Whole Lotta Love out of my mind….

tx mom | 5/21/2009, 9:54 pm EST

why do many keep saying Adam “screams” & “screeches”? obviously no exposure to real vocal talent and fed too much bubble gum pop. half the songs he sang were ballad type – there was no screaming…cookie cutter America=small closed minds.

I’m cranky but Adam will do fine. Download his i.tunes and make the statement!

Adam is IDOL | 5/21/2009, 9:55 pm EST

I didn’t realize so many other people experienced what I did – I dialed Adam’s numbers ALL NIGHT and hardly got through. When was the break we needed to get our votes in???

Joy | 5/21/2009, 9:56 pm EST

I don’t think that the people voted for Adam or Kris because of their religion or sexual preference…thats crazy. Most people don’t like all the screaming and crazy outlandish outfits.Performers such as Cher,Madonna,Michael Jackson can attract people to listen to them but after hearing them a few times they get old fast and we turn to real singers who can make us smile every time we put in a cd. People like Adam can only rely on the shock factor where Kris has real talent and will last so much longer than Adam.

open-minded individual | 5/21/2009, 10:01 pm EST

Over the past 8 years that AI has been on I have never watched it, until recently. I’ve breezed over it but nobody has ever kept my interest. I accidently stumbled on Adam Lamberts Mad World performance on the internet and was truly moved…..I love all kinds of music and although I do not sing I have a good ear. Adam has a special quality about him……he has a kind heart…he sings from his soul, which is a gift. So many people have focused on his sexual orientation as though that has anything to do with his ability to sing. I am also a scientist and if anyone has discovered a genetic correlation between sexual orientation and singing abilities then please publish your findings because you could win the nobel prize. I know so many straight people who are hateful and create chaos whereever they go. Here we have a gifted creative artist who has touched my life and millions more….it really doesn’t make sense to condemn him when he brings happiness into people’s lives. Adam’s innate talent and creativity will surely bring him beyond AI. And this will be a blessing because many people including myself will be able to enjoy his music for years to come. Isn’t that what’s really important here?

Ron | 5/21/2009, 10:01 pm EST

Adam Lambert reminds me in many ways of another charismatic performer of many years ago. His name was Elvis Presley. I believe Adam will be just as famous.
I would love to hear Adam do some Elvis songs though I realize it’s very unlikely.
Go Adam!

Maria | 5/21/2009, 10:02 pm EST

Please don’t tell me christians are actually saying this? i can’t believe this. we are the number one reason for atheism. no, not kudos for voting for kris in order to destroy adam’s chances. I am an incredibly strong Christian and voted 30 times for adam (i would more except the busy phone lines). Michele is right. “you who are without sin, cast the first stone”. you love your family and friends and many other people who sin every day. you cannot pick and choose sins. adam was superior. his personal life has never been confirmed. even if it has, you can not reprimand adam for his lifestyle when he isn’t even a christian. we must love unbelievers for who they are. we are to live by example, not judge and preach with words. please i beg all christians out there, don’t make what has happened on american idol a religious issue or some moral crusade. the crusades alienated and still do many people from christianity. why? it is hypocritical beyond belief. we are supposed to know better. it’s time we start acting like it. love is all that matters. it is above every other law. love firstly God, and then others as yourself. all those who aren’t christians out there, feel free to ignore this message. it is not meant for you. i’m so sorry for those who have offended you and have shown prejudices and hate. it is their wrong doing, not the truth of Christianity.

Mary | 5/21/2009, 10:03 pm EST

Sorry folks but America voted and yes we love Kris! He is a very talented guy and yes I will be in line for his CD. I think our country is tired of way out there performers who think that if they scream and dress strange and have to rely on the black eye make up to get attention. Come on we’re all sick of the same ole stuff and we welcome someone with talent who doesn’t have to be outlandish to get attention. We Love Kris!

GDSS | 5/21/2009, 10:05 pm EST

Anonymous,

If you are a Christian, then you beared false witness by voting for the person you know was not the better singer. This was a singing competition, not what their personal lives are about. To God, a sin is a sin, no sin is better than another, lying, cheating, stealing, fornicating, etc. Love the sinner, hate the sin.

SonyBMG | 5/21/2009, 10:06 pm EST

Hey Joy-

You are saying Cher, Madonna & Michael Jackson are not great performers and people get sick of them? Unreal. Yea, I suppose people won’t get sick of that stupid 14 year old looking dopey Kris Allen in about 2 months. America will forget about him actually by next week. Where vocally Adam lambert will conquer the world. Enjoy your boy Kris and his title, he does belong in Disney World.

Kinch | 5/21/2009, 10:07 pm EST

Joy: I’m so blown away by your comment, I don’t know where to start. Cher, Madonna, and Michael Jackson are among the greatest stars of pop music over the last 20 years with record sales that are second to none. Who do people listen to when they get tired of the best of the best? Wayne Newton?

Lana | 5/21/2009, 10:08 pm EST

I’m 54 and I SCREAMED when KISS came out and sang with Adam Lambert. I stood up in my living room and screamed like a kid at a concert. It was an incredible thing to watch. When Adam sang ‘Beth’ and emphasized that he was playing with the band, we all knew. For me, it was like, he won right there and them. He held the stage with Kiss (and they still can rock it like always). I kept screaming until I thought I’d better settle down or have a freaking heart attack. It was a thing of beauty. Then Queen. OMFG!
The only thing that could have made the evening any better is if Ronnie James Dio came out and sang with Adam. Their voices together, that would have put me in the hospital for sure!

Adam lost out to mediocrity. He’s not out of the cookie cutter mold of most pop “artists” today. Real greatness always has detractors. Remember how they wouldn’t show Elvis above the waist. Jim Morrison was forbidden to say the word “higher” in LMF on Ed Sullivan. He said it anyway.

Kris is a nice kid and talented, but nothing extraordinary. Sorry, nothing against Kris, but he’s just one of many. Adam is unique. After the initial shock, I’m glad it played out the way it did. Idol is a better gig for Kris. It will help his career. Not necessarily so for Adam. Losing the number one slot might just be the best thing for his career. It gives him more artistic cred being crowed another pre-packaged Idol pop icon.

Jim | 5/21/2009, 10:08 pm EST

Adam Lambert should tour with Queen….it could very well be the best thing to happen to the band and certainly the closest, acceptable replacement for Freddie Mercury- both in talent and flamboyance.

Maria | 5/21/2009, 10:08 pm EST

This was a singing competition, not a competition to see who can play key board piano, guitar. So to say that Kris should win because he can do so is foolish. If that were the case they would take contestants that can’t sing but that can play guitar. Kris is GREAT, but Adam is by far better at singing. I am biased though because I love rock. I’m sure Adam will do fine and before too long I will probably be seeing him on stage opening for one of the big rock bands I go to see, then maybe in a few years he will be able to headline a big show, if he can get hooked up with the right bandmates and not have corporate pigeon-hole him into doing something too commercial.

Raine | 5/21/2009, 10:08 pm EST

I think they should let the judges make the final decision, just like they do on “So You Think You Can Dance”.. Maybe then the ones that really deserve to win, will..

Kay | 5/21/2009, 10:09 pm EST

Some people commented and said that Adam does not scream. I liked Adam but he does SCREAM! It’s just on key lol. He did very well throughout the whole competition but I personally didn’t like the fact that he screamed in every song…give us a break man! I still think he should have won. I liked Kris better because his vocals were better but I think that Adam has that star persona…he just needs to chill with the screaming on every song.

TheCoz | 5/21/2009, 10:10 pm EST

I never realized K.D. Lang and Robert Smith’s lovechild was a contestant!!! Oh well, at least Justin Timberlake’s little brother won. Maybe they can do a collaboration.

adam-fever | 5/21/2009, 10:10 pm EST

Tmom–are you nuts or deaf? Adam can sing any genre except maybe sappy country. Kris can sing one genre–soft rock–as long as it’s not more than one octave. Adam didn’t miss notes or screw up words–Kris did. We all understand this is not a talent contest, rather a popularity voting contest. Clearly your comments prove that talent is not obvious to everyone. Adam is by far the most talented contestant ever on idol. Just because he doesn’t play an instrument on stage doesn’t make him a lesser musician. He does play instruments, but he prefers to perform with his whole body rather than be limited by a guitar or piano. Adam has perfect pitch and rhythm. I don’t get you folks who feel it’s necessary to bash Adam to somehow explain why Kris won. Kris won because the tweenies voted their little fingers off.I have a 14 year old and NO BODY sends text messages faster than a tweenie. Congrats Kris. GO ADAM!

strider643 | 5/21/2009, 10:12 pm EST

Kris is just plain old boring. I guess boring is ok though. I suppose in these uncertain changing times we need boring too.

jowilliams | 5/21/2009, 10:15 pm EST

Kris Allen: “Adam deserves this.”
Case Closed

kick | 5/21/2009, 10:15 pm EST

Even Kris stated that “Adam deserved this.” If Kris thinks that Adam deserved it more than he deserved it, is it such a stretch for his fans to understand what he meant by that? I don’t really think he was being humble there, I think he meant what he said and he said what he meant. I think either of them actually deserved it. I think they are both talented in their own way (such very different artists). But there literally are a thousand Kris Allen types out there that can play a guitar and sing well. Adam Lambert (whether you personally like him or not) is one in a million, the uniquely talented. Adam will probably be the one with the long career (think along the lines of Elton John, Mick Jagger). Kris sounds like a lot of people on the radio today, and I think that got him a lot of support being “the guy next door” type or the “everyman,” but that is exactly the thing that might be a detriment to his career, the fact that he is the guy next door type and that this type of artist is easily replaced with next year’s guy next door (think Taylor Hicks). And poor Kris, I hope he can survive his first single.

As for who won last night, I think they both did, and I wish them both well, but history actually is on the side of the unique artist, the one in a million, and (like it or not) that is hands down, without question, Adam Lambert.

TheCoz | 5/21/2009, 10:15 pm EST

@ Skylar (the first poster)

Ummmmmm….didn’t Clay Aiken also come in second on American Idol? I don’t remember any outrage about a gay contestant losing back then. Where’s the outrage?!?!? Besides, Adam Lambert has never come out and declared his sexuality, so everyone needs to just calm down about this.

Michael Stipe, Freddy Mercury, Rob Halford, Elton John…and those are ones I’m listing off the top of my head. There are plenty of gay male singer success stories.

Suzie Q | 5/21/2009, 10:19 pm EST

In all the years I have watched AI, there hasn’t been anyone to compare with Adam Lambert and his show stopping talent. The thought that Adam lost because of his sexual choices is just plain wrong – this was a singing/talent competition, not a church service.

Lana | 5/21/2009, 10:23 pm EST

Oh and this thing about Adam’s sexuality. First off, I want to listen to him, not date him, so I couldn’t care less. The homophobia and snide comments, I could do without, however. Since when has gay been such a shocking thing in the entertainment world? James Dean was gay and he’s still considered hot by men and women, gay and straight. Rock Hudson. Little Richard. Liberache. Freddie Mercury. Elton John. Didn’t seem to hurt any of their careers.

Another thing that’s really annoying is that nobody has considered for a minute that the guy might actually be heterosexual. I certainly don’t know, but I hate gender role stereotypes. Why can’t straight guys were eyeliner or be wildly creative and expressive?
Seriously, I think Adam would be far more of a threat to “macho” males out there if he wasn’t gay. Now, they write off his appeal and his mystique because he’s supposedly gay. Heaven forbid a straight guy being that hot and talented. It would be hard for insecure hetero-males to compete with, huh?

Personally, I hope Adam keeps everyone guessing. It’s nobody’s business. As he says, he knows who he is.

Felicia Chen | 5/21/2009, 10:25 pm EST

I am a viewer from Singapore and have been an avid follower of this season of AI. My family, friends, colleagues and myself think that ADAM LAMBERT is more talented than Kris Allen. We were very heartbroken that Adam did not win. His finale performance can easily be his best throughout this season. We’re so clueless about how America have voted, it’s a disgrace that the ‘free’ nation voted against Adam out of spite because they are jealous of him getting the media publicity and hype. In the perspective of a typical viewer who don’t understand or don’t even listen to music, he is overrated. But to genuine music lovers who are not tone deaf, Adam Lambert deserves all the praises. Whatever Kris Allen can do (play piano, songwriting and guitar), Adam Lambert can do all these but Adam has chosen not to show off. Also he never told anyone the amount of prejudice he has suffered during his young schooling days. Adam has been so true to himself and to us, unlike other contestants who prefer to play safe and act like the gal or guy next door with their sad stories to win them votes. Adam have written his own songs and is a gifted arranger – he changes every song including Johnny Cash’s Ring of Fire, U2’s One, etc and brings life into these songs, making them popular to people who are not fans of them. His vocal is a eye candy. He is a gifted vocalist with a wide vocal range who can do great in any genre. Besides being a gifted vocalist and talented arranger, Adam Lambert is a nice, humble person on the inside – he has been good friends to almost all the contestants. It’s sad that America judged him based on his lifestyle and over-the-top stage persona when they do NOT know Adam as a person. So isn’t the winner of American Idol has to be someone who only has to look good and clean on the surface (never mind how ugly his heart could be)? Even if America refuses to admit it, its bigotry has reared its ugly head when the winner was crowned. The nation has revealed its hypocrisy while it has claimed to be a free one that celebrates freedom of speech and behaviour. Aren’t many wars started by this hypocrite nation? Think. America has lost the respect of many.

Pooche | 5/21/2009, 10:25 pm EST

Hey this is a show for entertainment it is over let it go. You losers sound like angry republicans. The vote is over you lose move on. Now all these conservative Adam loving grandma’s shold start voting for gay marriage since you apparently didn’t vote for Adam. Voting is power. I voted for Danny and Anoop both of them lost but in the end they all win.

TheCoz | 5/21/2009, 10:27 pm EST

I’m calling it right now…Adam Lambert becomes the new lead singer of Velvet Revolver. Slash was a mentor this season and seemed to love Adam’s singing. Plus he can hit Axl’s high notes, so they could break out some G n’R songs during the set. It’s a win-win scenario for Adam and the band.

I guess I can’t say I’m surprised that so many people are making this into a battle of sexual orientation and religion. It’s kind of pathetic. I am sorry the person you wanted to win did not, but it does come down to votes, and more people voted for Kris. Were they voting AGAINST Adam? I honestly don’t think so. I recognize the talent of both, but Kris’s voice and musical ability suited my taste. Is that wrong? I hope not. Adam has an unbelievable voice, but it isn’t the kind of music I want to listen to all the time. It is sad that the same people who are claiming discrimination cannot embrace the differing opinions of those who merely enjoy listening to Kris a little more. Kris’s voice appealed to more people who watch American Idol, who obviously are not all “tweens,” as clearly most of us commenting are not tweens. If more people had voted for Kris, he would have won. And for all of those who think it was just the Adam fans that could not get through, I can assure you that wasn’t the case. I attempted many times to vote for Kris, but probably only got through 5 times on the phone. I finally texted, which seemed like a sure bet. At the end of the day, Kris’s fans got the job done, and Adam’s fans had the same opportunities, but did not. They both will be successful in their own genres. I wish the opinions of both sides would be respected and not trashed. Disappointing.

Russ Martin | 5/21/2009, 10:29 pm EST

I’m 60 and was amazed by Adam’s talent. He is destined for greatness. The sad truth is American Idol lost when Adam wasn’t named winner. Idol lost all credibility, and countless people, like myself, who have only watched this season, will go back to something else. However, I am looking forward to Adam’s first CD. It should be great. In a way, I’m glad he came is second. Now, he isn’t tied to all the Idol publicity crap they would have made him do. He will ink deals very soon and make much more than the million Idol would have given him. Believe me, talent like his has legs and he will be around for a long time. The homophobes can go back to watching and listening to their performers, whoever they are. By the way. Elvis would have lost Idol. He was too sexual and ahead of his time to win. Artists, like Adam, are ahead of their time.

Merle | 5/21/2009, 10:32 pm EST

Sometimes I think American Idol is rigged. How can anyone who watched the result show have any doubt what an incredible talented performer Adam is. His performances were the highlight of the boring drawn out show. To see him sing with Kiss and Queen in one night, and to see him do it so wonderfully is pure joy. I haven’t felt that excited since I saw Elvis perform many years ago. What a beautiful gift from God. I still don’t know how he lost.

Felicia Chen | 5/21/2009, 10:37 pm EST

I would like to add that if AI is looking for a recording artist and ballad singer, Adam Lambert has it all. He will definitely outsell other idol contestants. I wouldn’t store CDs of singers like Kris Allen with weak and pitchy vocals. Its very unfortunate that we in Singapore would have to bear with Kris’s poor vocal quality. I would prefer to listen to Jason Mraz and Nick Lachey. Face the fact – It was so obvious to see the shocked and disappointed look of Simon when the winner is Kris Allen. America got it wrong this time, except for David Cook. If Adam Lambert is not gay, he would have succeeded David Cook. Like Adam, David Cook is more a rocker – he won it because he is not gay.

By the way, David Cook is a fan of Adam Lambert.

cece | 5/21/2009, 10:41 pm EST

Why are you now looking for answers?
Adam lost cause american people didnt vote him, thats the only reason for me, may be there are another reasons, but lets us beleive that AI is an honest show, where people votes for the best singer, no matter what.By the way, does anyone got the percentage results results for Adam and Kriss?

Adam, you lost a title, and you win a career for the rest of your life.
Kriss you win a title, time will say if you deserve it.

Good luck to both of you

Lambert's own fans voted Kris | 5/21/2009, 10:48 pm EST

I think both of these singers are talented — Adam is in a totally different league than any other contestant. I do not believe it has to do with his sexuality. I wonder if I could listen to an entire album of screaming… but that’s beside the point.

I know for a fact that many of Adam’s true fans voted for Kris because they didn’t want an artist the caliber of Adam to be stuck in the rules of AI — they want him to go out and do his own thing, with his own level of artistry.

Kris will do just fine and he is easy to listen to. Support them both.

Angeline Goh | 5/21/2009, 10:53 pm EST

Probably the voting should not be free because it has been subjected to abuse from people who voted out of spite or homophobia. If each vote is charged $0.80, no way that Kris Allen will get more votes. Who would want to spend so much to vote for a mediocre singer who is dime a dozen? The show is an honest one but the fact of how people vote made the show farce and lose its credibility.

howdy | 5/21/2009, 10:59 pm EST

The main reason that the very talented, polished professional Adam lost is that he was polished and professional and hard core fans who still make up a sizable part of the viewers still belive in the show…as it was orginally percieved …a reality/talent show for young amatuers who would be put thru AI boot camp and be exposed to all aspects of performing in a professional setting. Then we the viewers got to watch them learn and grow and follow thier story arc and keep putting thru week to week the most talented and quick learners who stepped up to that weeks challange.
Now AI will tell you in thier fine print that some or certian types of professional experience…or former recording contracts or whatever are allowed but they have never volunteered this info unless forced to nor do they promote the fact ….indeed they do everything they can to promote the Cindrella average guy dreams come true aspect of the show.. because this is what made it so popular. In the last few seasons the have felt the need to stack the deck with more and more professionals then proceed to pimp and promote the hell out of them. The mystery is why…the probably assume they can stack the deck with someone who will hit superstar paydirt…but only 2 of thier chosen ones Reuben and Fantasia have ever come out on top and have been among the least successful winners. Now Adam is the latest and best version of a professional …polished in every way contestant that AI/19 could hope for and that was the problem. There was no story arc for Adam.. or perforance technique he was learning he came to AI with all the performance skills he had learned from his years of professional experience and training. He as he said in his post interviews he did what he set out to do to use AI as a showcase to promote himself. If Simon Cowell wants to showcase and promote professional and amatuer talent he has a show for that AMERICAS GOT TALENT where the top prize is a stint in Vegas ( Adam/ Vegas what a perfect fit )but by diluting the AI concept by allowing professionals with 10 or more years of experience compete with 16 year old novices they may have killed the goose that laid the golden egg. Longtime fans will no longer respect or believ in the show and newer or casual viewes just don’t understand how the most professional performers never get the top prize will believe its all a sham.

open-minded individual | 5/21/2009, 11:06 pm EST

I tried to vote for Adam for two hours and couldn’t get through because the lines were busy, non-stop jammed…I’ve heard other people had similar problems with Adam’s phone lines. Imagine the many 1000’s (maybe millions) of votes that didn’t get through. It’s a possibility to consider…. that this may have skewed the outcome. Since it is a possibility then the system is flawed.

Beatlemaniac | 5/21/2009, 11:33 pm EST

yeah, and old enough to be one. yes, i pretty near lost my mind! i don’t even think simon cowel is old enough to remember the phenomenom. the screaming, stampeding fans. the frienzy. in no way can you compare cris allen with the beatles but 10 year old girls haven’t changed. that’s why he won. he has a cute baby face and the little girls loved him. they are not mature enough to appreciate true talent. cris was just their little heart throb. who is watching AI at home? little ten year old girls. there were no 10 yr. olds at the AI finals. it was a mature audience and adam clearly was the fav.
i’m a christian and i watched the whole season and i had no idea of dannys or cris’ religious bent.
10 yr. olds do not have homophobia and they did not demonize adam. there was no christian conspiracy–think about that–christians have a hard time figuring out which religion is the right one. you really thing they’re gonna band tog. successfully to get cris the title?
cris won with the little girl vote.

to mustang chef: idol will not go to hell in a handbasket–they did bring adam into millions of living rooms.

to imagine77: keep your shirt on.

to mike: Bill Maher did not coin the phrase “Jesus freak” not in your lifetime. college towns were crawling with Jesus freaks in the
’60’s.
i didn’t get to see simon’s face-sorry i missed that.
i saw the pics of adam kissing the boys–last time i saw that was on Saturday Night Live. i won’t name anyone but for sure people we all know. sat nite live kisses boys all the time.

Estrada | 5/22/2009, 12:12 am EST

If Allison won instead, there wouldn’t be so much distasteful comments against Kris. Adam, Alexis Grace, Allison, Anoop and Danny are in fact way better vocalists than Kris. I pity Danny that his fans has poor taste for giving their votes to Kris. Its lame to say that Adam’s kind of music don’t suit the masses – he has demonstrated throughout the entire competition that he is a versatile singer who can sing in all kind of genres and he’s almost pitch perfect – Just go download his music at itunes and figure before an Adam’s critic writes any misinformed comment about Adam which made he/she stupid. And the fact is he don’t scream. Kris’ mellow style of singing and music is BORING and how he struggled to hit the high note in “No Boundaries” has really hurt my eardrums. SERIOUSLY, I’d rather listen to Karunesh’s kind of music, other soul musicians, etc. Sincerely I believe Kris will be another Taylor Hicks or worse than him. Not because of Adam and his fans’ support, Kris would never have made it so far.

j-anne | 5/22/2009, 12:27 am EST

Adam accepted the loss with respect, dignity and class…too bad his fans don’t behave themselves like he does. I think he is a wonderful singer, and obviously has a niche in the music industry that he will excel in. My preference is for Kris Allen’s style of music. Are you all the same people that complained about Daughtry getting voted off early? If you are, then you are absolutely hypocritical to bash a guy that has the same great mainstream sound. Not all of us like Adams kind of music so no matter whether he has an angels voice, it wasn’t for me or alot of other people. If you watched any of the red carpet coverage, Chris Daughtry actually said he was rooting for Kris Allen. Are you telling me that someone with such INCREDIBLE success in the music industry, doing mainstream music knows NOTHING? Get over it people…its over. The winner has been chosen and I am not a lovesick 13 year old. I am in my 40’s.

poppop09@ymail.com | 5/22/2009, 12:47 am EST

Some of you people are just plain funny. You seem to think that everybody in the free world should have voted for Adam Lambert and it’s just totally unthinkable to you that some people could actually prefer Kris Allen. Yes, Adam is very talented, but, in a very different way from Kris. My prediction is Adam Lambert will be the front man for some rock band, not a solo artist. I’ve been in the radio industry for 30+ years and i’ve seen dozens and dozens of Adam Lamberts come and go. But whether you want to admit it or not, Kris comes closer to a “Total Package” than does Adam. Kris writes music, arrange’s music, and also sings. If he keeps growing musically, he will have a great deal of success. he reminds me very much of a young James Taylor, and that ain’t bad!!!!!

Aloha | 5/22/2009, 12:56 am EST

Can you imagine the general public is the one to vote whether you should have the operation? You’d be dead!
Christ Jesus died on the cross to redeem every man, woman and child not just you; so that we are privileged to call God our Heavenly Father. You want to judge? You shall be judged so, hope you’re prepared.
Hypocrisy, deceit and Puritanical vulgarity took place at AI Wednesday evening.
Adam is an exceptional entertainer, his costume and make up are just props appropriate for the settings. This amazing artist is well trained and has tremendous dedication and respect for his craft. The hundred million misery loves company American voters are the pitiful losers. Adam has 1.4 billion fans in China, 1 billion fans in India and all of Europe, Canada and Australia waiting to buy his album and pour out their wallets to see his concerts.

Barbara | 5/22/2009, 1:26 am EST

I think it is a travesty that Adam did not win. I feel it is an insult to my own intelligence to ever bother wasting my time to watch a show that is just plain ridiculous with this sort of an outcome. It is not supposed to be a Miss (or Mr.) America package. It is supposedly based on finding the MOST talented vocalist…a one in a million star. I have a 23 year old son. Kris is cute as a button… The voters are mostly comprised of teensy girls. For this show to continue, the voting parameters would have to be changed for it to hold any credibility for any intelligent, self respecting individual, irregardless of the age. It has come close before, but this time it was a blatant fact that Adam was “the” superior….actually, the most shining star American Idol has ever presented on its stage to the American public. You do not have to like his songs or style. The show is based on chosing “THE” best; therefore, I know I won’t watch it again…why bother…insulting….

Kara can't write songs | 5/22/2009, 2:00 am EST

I can’t believe anyone gives a rats patootie about all this, really. The majority of people who call into AI are 10-13 yr old girls; the same girls who thought the Jonas Bros deserved a Grammy.

While I preferred Adam, not so much for his rocker-screamin’ vocals, but because he made the show entertaining, and no doubt, he was the reason so many big name entertainers jumped on board for the finale – everyone thought Adam was going to win.

But, in the end it matters not, and it’s a good thing Adam didn’t win, for surely that gawd awful ‘No Boundaries’ song would sound the end of his career, if he’d won and had to record it. As it is, Adam is a free agent and won tons of fans and got loads of exposure.

Personally, I pity Kris being stuck with such a stinker of an Idol song to record.

Ronnie Moix | 5/22/2009, 2:30 am EST

I’m from Conway. I am glad a local one. To be honest, Alison was the best. As for Adam. He was entertaining but a bit overrated. His performance on Satisfaction and One were horrible. I could not believe the judges liked it. If anything caused Adam to lose it was a vote against the judges buttkissing of Adam. It was especially disturbing to see Paula’s reaction. C’mon girl, you have been at the top of the business, noone is good enough to leave someone faint.

Here’s the thing, suicide is not usually a rash decision. Most suicidal people are that way for a long time. Something may trigger the decision to finally do it, but the general feeling that life sucks and to simply be tired of living can go on for a while. As for the friends and family that everybody is supposed to consider to keep going. Much of the time friends and family are busy with their own lives and have no understanding, concern or patience for you and why you feel your life is terrible – especially if you have things that all of society tells you are supposed to make you happy. Friends only like you when you’re smiling. Then when you off yourself they act surprised and put upon. If they cared so much, why didn’t they help? Because ALL people are selfish, not just the ones who take matters into their own hands. People don’t make time for other people’s pain – they are busy with their own. So all of us are alone in it. Add depression and despair to the mix and you just might get a suicide. If you don’t understand, then just shut up, give your condolences and move on. Otherwise don’t judge.

Longshowerz | 5/22/2009, 3:28 am EST

Adam lost because Gokey fans teamed up with Allen fans to narrowly beat Adam, had nothing to do with Kris outsinging Adam, they just did not want Adam to win period! But in the end I think Adam turned out to be the real winner, not having to deal with that Kara song and being chained down by the Idol contract plus he did get a car! =)

I am convinced that the show is ochestrated. The finale was a display of rehearsed theatre. All the golden award winners new they had won before hand. And Kris did too. His reaction was so acted!!! It’s a money making scheme. Adam has signed a deal with AI producers, and they want us to buy both him and Kris. A double for them. Such a …

Conal | 5/22/2009, 7:11 am EST

Conservative middle class america has voted. However, talent, stage presence, charisma of the level that Adam Lambert has demonstrated will deliver opportunities for him, that may be better than the AI model.

Faith_D | 5/22/2009, 7:24 am EST

ok things are getting abit heated in here…But i’m just gonna say this. My favourite is Adam Lambert. What can i say? I’m a hard rocker..
But Kris is a soft-rocker. He prefers his songs to be slow…And he’s a soulfull artist. In that way, Kris is very good. Personally, it could have gone either way and it went to Kris, no BIG DEAL. Congrats to Kris, and both of them will have a very VERY bright and strong future. But i would like it if people would stop bringing the other contestant down! I love Adam, and I’m a die hard Adam fan…But since Kris won, he probably deserved it, and its Americas pick so people should handle it sensibly. And to fellow adam fans…Adam will be a legend!! And he will go VERY VERY far!! Dont sweat it! Peace n love! =D

Bella | 5/22/2009, 7:29 am EST

I was shocked and disappointed that Adam lost – he was clearly the best entertainer and vocalist. However I wish Kris well he is a sweet guy.

After this travesty I am done with watching American Idol–they don’t even have to have another season as far as I am concerned. If they do, the voting system needs a SERIOUS over-haul. Felicia Chen – I am a Singaporean too and if you want to use Singapore in your post, make sure you do not tarnish her name with your immature and ludicrous comments. Firstly, the world does not revolve around you and you, your friends and your family alone. FYI, there are many Kris Allen fans in Singapore who like his style of music. So as long as we don’t like Adam’s screaming, we are wrong? Wow! Are you two? Do you know that we intend to set up a fan club here? I betcha don’t cause you are caught up in your own little Adam world. Newsflash : The world is more about you and whoever you support. You talk about a free country and how America fails you. Don’t make me laugh. You wouldn’t be typing on this website if not for America, so stop talking like you know so much about them. And just to remind you, instead of thanking AI for letting you know about Adam Lambert, which you can hear an album from him in the coming months, he would otherwise be just another struggling broadway star trying to make a living. Talk about warped values.

So your little essay about Adam’s lifestory. What is that supposed to mean? Sure it is touching but using that as a pathetic excuse for Adam to win. Don’t joke with me. If thats the case, shouldn’t Danny Gokey win AI since his wife just died? Or Scott since he survived a kidney operation and is now blind? For god’s sake, think before you talk. I would also suggest that you step down your high horse and stop worshipping Adam like a god. How stupid is this? Its only a reality tv show. If you think you can’t bear to lose, then don’t take part in the competition.
If anything, Singapore’s ugly head has reared from this ugly incident. Even the newspapers today was so bias.Seriously, what is this world coming to? Im disappointed to be a Singaporean

Donne | 5/22/2009, 10:07 am EST

To Aloha: Please don’t forget Adam’s multitude of fans here in South Africa!!!

Adam…The legendary superstar, you need no title, go out there and do what you do best – perform for the world – be who you are and do what pleases you.
You cannot be compared with Kris (not to take away from Kris’s talent) – in truth you cannot be compared with anyone, your individuality, charisma, presence and FANFACKINGTASTIC voice(that seems like such a lame adjective for your voice!!?!!) make you someone that is larger than life. You are an Icon.
I tend to agree that winning the AI title would have restricted you and you would have been subject to the stereotypical BS songs like that “no boundries” song (which Kris will do just fine with, being a mainstream singer & all – which there is nothing wrong with). You on the other hand, are off the charts BRILLIANT – A BORN SUPERSTAR.

You are the BEST ADAM!

Rosemerrie | 5/22/2009, 10:41 am EST

This finale was the best that’s ever been on ‘Idol’!
You know why?
BECAUSE ADAM WAS THERE!

It was ROCKIN on wed. and that wouldn’t have happened if he’d not been there.
Every performance (eccept kris’) was showy and full of spirit. Something that was lacking on every season before. This was the first year i’v EVER looked forward to watching such a stupid and boring show each week (this year it wasn’t boring – you have to admit it was fantabulous)…but next year i can’t bare to watch. never again.

you think Kiss would’ve come to sing with a ‘crooner’?
I THINK NOT!
Would queen come on stage for a show that previously didn’t rock AT ALL? NO!

Adam Lambert was the first to EVER sing ‘Whole Lotta Love’ or ‘The One’. Stars just know he’s one of them when they see him; therefore he should’v won hands down…but he’s still gonna be a superstar no matter what!

Anonymous | 5/22/2009, 11:57 am EST

Okay Rolling Stone, he lost, alright! We know you were all over his balls the whole season but it’s time to stop. I guess I have to go to other websites to try and fine ONE article on the guy who actually won the competition.

bb | 5/22/2009, 11:58 am EST

Adam Lambert is a truly rare & unique vocal talent. He mesmerizes us onstage–like it or not. He does not “scream” or “shriek”, but rather belts out high notes with a clarity & ease most singers only dream of. As for all the posts claiming that true musicianship requires plucking a guitar or tinkling piano keys while singing, I say use your tiny little brains. Think of Sinatra, Elvis, Ella Fitzgerald, even Pavarotti. The true vocal legends did not require a crutch. Time will tell, but I believe Adam is a force to be reckoned with. It would have been great to see him win AI; however,it probably won’t matter in the long run.

Connie | 5/22/2009, 12:00 pm EST

Grow up!!!!! It is called American Idol, not over-the-top Idol, not I wannabe a glam rocker Idol. Kris is the perfect American Idol, not because he is hetero, not because he is christian, but because he is a true musician, who plays many different instruments, and puts his personal feelings into and mark on every song he sings. Adam is a performer who acts, who mugged for the cameras, who rode the wave of judges adoration but never came down to earth to actually put feeling into his performances. And the judges should all be fired for being unfair throughout this season’s competition and have a pet contestant. Kris won fair and square. So stop your crying and your homophobic conspiracy theories. If America was truly homophobic, Adam wouldn’t be in the top 13.

patriot ace | 5/22/2009, 12:30 pm EST

I aways considered Kris more talented, partly for his vocals, but week after week he continued to show his talents on the piano and guitar.
That make for a more diverse musician.
Half the time Adam seemed to be screaming the high notes, and other times he was incredible.

bb | 5/22/2009, 12:45 pm EST

bb you are delusional. He screeches, admit it. Steven Tyler, Robert Plant are good rock screamers. Adam, not so much.

Eliza | 5/22/2009, 12:58 pm EST

Most likely the next Elvis bio movie will be starring Adam. And he won’t need any dubbed in voice to take it over, or practice for hours to get the same Elvis tones, or persona.

Since Elvis left the stage, well there’s been no one to come close to his stage presence, his voice or anywhere near the complete package. And, now? Finally we have one to compete with that best talent of all time.
Yes, Adam could do it and probably will fill the void. His vocals, the pure tones from the low to high ranges like Elvis had, are the kind that can be listened to without videos backing him up.
But when both visual and audio are present, he’s the total package and so far above all the rest.
He should be grateful he didn’t win, and now can get on with his career which will skyrocket beyond anything he ever dreamed of … just watch!
Kris won the Idol competition, such as it is … and who knows why? Perhaps the ones calling in have different tastes for music, or whatever the reason … so what?
Adam won his place in music history and he’s only just begun.

What? | 5/22/2009, 1:00 pm EST

ever hear of David and Goliath?…here is the insight to the story. Goliath is a huge Giant and a great warrior fighting for bad causes, all the same a mighty giant. David on the other hand, is a shepherd and follower of god, took the challenge against Goliath and killed him with one stone. Ofcourse he had the hand of god in killing him. However, david without god’s help couldn’t have beaten Goliath. does it make Goliath better person or more talented?

What makes you all cry foul for Adam with the little talent he had, bending his gender. Anybody who bends the nature sexually is a pervert. WOW what a talent?

Guess what?…it just reminds me David and Goliath again and again. Be faithful to god, he will bless you with what you even do not deserve.

I was offended about the commnet that Adam Lambert is sexually perverted. That is a very subjective opinion by a Christian. Appearanceas aren’t everything. I am a Christian. The Bible says “do not be judged lest ye are judged.” No one knows for sure if Adam is gay. And if he was, it should not be a force in deciding a talent. Like the article said, he was innovative and on top of his game. I don’t think it is any Americans right even in a TV show to condone or condemn someone’s lifestyle. it is not the place for that. We aren’t electing a president even though people of this particular Christian’s mindset feel they have a handle even on politician’s spirituality. Adam was a competitive invigorating contestant without which Season 8 would not have been what it was.

top 13 | 5/22/2009, 2:17 pm EST

Adam should never have made it to the top 13. He’s a talentless hack who puts the same spin on different songs and ruins them. Mad World, Ring of Fire, Whole lotta love…please…gimme a break. Those were god-awful covers. I had to change the channel because all the dogs in the neighborhood wouldn’t stop howling.

Ergo Bongo | 5/22/2009, 2:19 pm EST

Any good suggestions to improve American Idol on the next season? There seems to be a mismatch in the selection of the top singers in the finale.

Albums I would buy if they were made available now:
1. Adam Lambert
2. Danny Gokey

Kris Allen doesn’t seem to have a powerful memorable voice.

Cancel it…forever.

donfx | 5/22/2009, 2:29 pm EST

Wow! Is everything in the US now political or religious? This was just a TV show with a contest that probably was decided by a single state–Arkansas which cast 38 million votes–40% of the total! The winner of American Idol doesn’t always become a star–who thinks America made the right decision with Taylor Hicks? I watched AI for Adam Lambert and snoozed during some of Kris’ performances, but that doesn’t mean that Kris will not be a star or that I’m upset that he won. He’s just not for me, just like Adam is not for some of you. How also can you know that Kris and Adam are all that different?

Jenn | 5/22/2009, 2:31 pm EST

Paraphrase from a poster named Mary “Come on we’re all sick of the same ole stuff and we welcome someone with talent ” — Ummmm — last time I checked Kris was “same old stuff”……I love music of all kinds, and Kris doesn’t cut it as new and exciting. There are hundreds of thousands who look\sing\entertain just like him….

Do I think Adam lost because of political nonsense — nope — I think he lost for 2 reasons….1)I think the same thing happened to him as it did to Daughtry — they took it for granted he had it “in the bag”. 2) People truly believe he will further his career not being tied to AI and doing music they give to him.

I am a HUGE Adam fan – because he was different…unique, something the music industry as a whole has been lacking lately. Was he over the top with notes sometimes – absolutely…but so is Mariah, Whiteny, Celine, Steven Tyler, Robert Plant….And look what a ride they had.

At the end of the day it is what it is – Kris won – I’m curious to see if he can make it in the big leagues, or if he will fade out like fellow soft crooner Aiken.

Time will tell ladies and ‘gents….I’m just kickin’ back and waiting to see what happens.

One side bar — to those who oppose Adam for his make-up as they are “antics” – I wonder if they felt the same way about Cook and Daughtry when they sported the liner…..hmmmm…..

D | 5/22/2009, 2:31 pm EST

BJflanagan grow up. Attacking someone really makes your point come across, NOT.

Crowded Hut | 5/22/2009, 2:33 pm EST

If only Adam had the chance to sing Queen’s “We Will Rock You” or Gun ‘n Roses’ “Welcome To The Jungle” then Kris wouldn’t stand a chance to become the winner at all!

Deborah | 5/22/2009, 3:01 pm EST

Adam should have won American Idol. Kris is very good in his own way; however, just ordinary. Adam stands out alone and cannot be compared to another. He is original and defenitly has the vocals to sing whatever he wants. I am sad to see that people voted out of religious belief and someone’s own sexuality. And further, I have read that people voted well over the allowed number of votes and that they were counted. That is sad. A sure fix is to eliminate multiple votes and each phone line be allowed one vote. Adam was defenitly the winner. I think that the lost will not be felt for too long cause Mr. Lambert–you are a star. When the dust settles and everyday life comes back, Adam will make CD’s and start tours and then all Adam fans will rejoice and come together.

Alkaia | 5/22/2009, 3:15 pm EST

In my “mad world”, Adam Lambert won.

Jack | 5/22/2009, 3:23 pm EST

I think what happened as it stated in the article is that when Danny got kicked off his fans were like you know what we don’t like adam lambert at all, so for the final weeks vote danny gokeys fans voted for kris. Its as simple as that it wasn’t rigged its not a travesty its just that kris had his fans voting for him and had danny gokeys fans voting for him.
thats how I voted I didn’t want Adam to win so I voted for the other guy.
Plain and simple.

ddd | 5/22/2009, 3:30 pm EST

Jack | 5/22/2009, 3:33 pm EST

this is what happened, danny gokey fans didn’t want adam to win so they voted for kris, kris had his fans votes and the fans of danny gokey. I can guarantee its not because he is gay. In fact I didn’t vote for him and I found out he was gay like 30 seconds ago when i read skylers comment. so shut up about “oh america hates gays” it has nothing to do with it. The gay people are just looking for something to complain about.

Roz | 5/22/2009, 3:49 pm EST

Intelligent article, great points.
Adam did not shine on the finals, his Mad World showed his theatre background, but did not bring anything new to it that helped him. In fact it showed his weaknesses – his egotism and his belief that he is more original than he is. Lambert’s first rendition of the Gary Jules’ version was way more powerful, impressive until I check out Gary Jules again on YouTube. However Adam did show remarkable vocal control on it, which comes from his theatre training and background (which he denied gave him an advantage over Allen)Lambert, like many, may have fallen into the trap of believing his own press. Kara’s song was ridiculous for both, and her comment made it clear that it was not written with Allen in mind. Allen however continued to rise and to communicate from the heart, and it was this more authentic style that appealed to a lot of his voters. For me, Lambert got in the way of his own presentation, and somehow was always more about artifice, spectacle and came across as a more contrived theatre performer than a musician. Cowell’s bias definately did not help him, nor the ridiculous gushing of Paula and Kara, who one would think had the Second Coming in mind, rather than an emerging new Idol. The bias on the show stopped them from seeing the numerous attempts that Lambert wrecked a genre by getting in the way of the music. He may have peaked actually way early, and the rest was disappointing. His finals showed him off back in a more glamourous comfort zone, but truly not a Kiss Rock Musician. Music Theatre yes, musicianship less so. Allen quietly got on with the business of what he came for, to produce some amazingly creative arrangements, to develop his style and performance experience and to win over the public overwhelmingly with his authentic heartfelt communication through music. He won, and while the total count of individual votes has not yet been made public, my guess is by a landslide. Allen brought it home, end of. He will continue to grow as his public personnae developes and his music, and love of, will start to really reveal his sense of artistic style and composition. Congratulations to Kris Allen, for a job well done.

Lolpet | 5/22/2009, 3:58 pm EST

I am sooooo gutted! ADAM WAS ROBBED!! He was a star every week. Kris was lovely guy but out of Adams league. Daughtry didn’t need to win AI to become a multi million selling artist, and neither will Adam. Can’t wait for the albums!!

Julie Chriske | 5/22/2009, 4:00 pm EST

I think homophobia played a part in Adam’s loss…Perez should have waited to release the photo of Adam kissing another man…that hurt him I think. I have never bought an “Idol” record before, but I will buy Adam’s…
Julie in Montana

ARbob | 5/22/2009, 4:02 pm EST

So Adam lost because he is gay, wears eyeliner, and was the judges’ favorite? And he should have won because he is different?
Folks, it comes down to the music and while Adam performed theater, Kris arranged his music and sang. The finale should have been between Danny and Kris… that would have been close. As it was, I’ll bet that Adam’s loss was so large that they will keep the numbers hidden to avoid embarassment. That said, I think Adam is a good guy and I look forward to watching his success.

CHARLIE | 5/22/2009, 4:07 pm EST

KRIS ALLEN APPEARED SO SHOCKED TO HEAR HIS NAME CALLED AS THE WINNER BECAUSE HE KNEW IN HIS HEART HE DOES NOT DESERVE TO WIN!!! HE SHOULD HAVE BEEN HONEST TO HIMSELF AND RELINGUISH HIS TITLE TO THE R E AL W I N N E R —ADAM LAMBERT!!! HEY AMERICAN IDOL, REVISIT YOUR VOTING SYSTEM. SOMETHING IS TERRIBLY WRONG WITH YOUR SHOW’S COMING UP WITH A MEDIOCARE (KRIS ALLEN) FOR A WINNER. KRIS ALLEN IS SUBORDINATED IN TALENT EVEN TO THOSE EARLIER ELIMINATED AS DANNY GOKEY, AND THE REST. WITH SUCH A DISASTROUS UNJUST RESULT—SURELY YOU’VE LOST ALL CREDIBILITY THIS SEASON…YOU’VE LOST OUR PATRONAGE OF YOUR PROGRAM. THE RESULT IS TRULY SICKENING!!! BUT HEY, ADAM LAMBERT, YOU HAVE A THRONG OF FANS HERE AND WE COULD NOT WAIT FOR YOU TO CUT YOUR FIRST ALBUM AND VISIT THE PHILIPPINES IN ONE OF YOUR TOURS IN THE FUTURE. OUR PRAYERS AND BEST WISHES ADAM !!!

Julie Chriske | 5/22/2009, 4:10 pm EST

I too was constantly reminded opf one of my long time “idols” Elvis Presley…he could definately play him onscreen or stage. All of the contestants this year were pretty amazing….but Adam’s loss was based in homophobia…shame on Perez Hilton for trying to out him.

Peggy | 5/22/2009, 4:10 pm EST

Middle America “pooh”..Now the same sex couples can get married in Iowa…Quit knocking the midwest it is a great place…
Adam didn’t loose, he is just starting and he will have an amazing career…I will be glad when he can have concerts…everyone knows his name now even overseas….

dlvsadam | 5/22/2009, 4:25 pm EST

i know one thing im done with american rejects idol. its rigged its stupid, the underdog always wins. and talented singers always end up runnerups stupid of a joke lettingbut the runnerups have more song hits like archuleta. adam will run c ircles around kris adam will have more song hits.cant wait til america will see that…hahah

Chris | 5/22/2009, 4:47 pm EST

The only thing wrong with Adam was that he comes from a backward country. Small minded people who never leave their own back yard.
Fortunately for him the rest of the western world can see what a star he is and are well and truly ready to make him a star.

John | 5/22/2009, 5:02 pm EST

I get so sick of hearing Adam Lambert fans saying “he should have won” “he deserved to win” Give me a break! It’s a voting contest and although you think your opinion is right obviously more people disagree with you than agree with you. I voted for Kris because I think he is a better singer and musician than Adam. It’s a matter of opinion. Music is art and there’s no right or wrong. More people liked Kris than Adam. Period. Graciously congratulate the winner and stop complaining!

Gina | 5/22/2009, 5:09 pm EST

Although Adam Lambert did not win this year’s American Idol, he stands to gain so much more in terms of success. I think that something drastic has to change with regards to the voting system, as in get real A.I. and count individual votes only. Adam did not stand a chance with Kris’s home state turning out 38M votes when its population is only 28M total. Who was consistent week in and week out this season? Adam. Who were people talking about after every show? Adam. Simon may have favored him from the get go, but Simon is the only judge that is completely honest (brutally so at times, but fairly right on). We as a family were Danny Gokey fans early on. For the past 7 or 8 weeks though, we were in Adam’s camp and like most of you out there, hoped it would be a Gokey/Lambert finale. Kris Allen has a very nice voice and is a nice young man, but as others before me have said BORING! I would not pay to see him in concert, nor listen to his album in the car. Call him theatrical, but Adam was fresh, original and always authentic each week. I am a fan for life no matter what, as are my sons and husband. We could not wait to hear what he was going to sing each week. Be it a ballad, rock and country classic or Motown hit (Tracks of my tears was unbelievable), he not only rocked the house, but added something special to every song he sang and a new persona emerged each week with his hairstyle variations and original outfits, that made watching the show an absolute pleasure. I burned a CD with Mad World, Tracks of my Tears, Play that Funky Music and Born to be Wild – all by Adam Lambert. I cannot get enough of him. I have never enjoyed a season as much as this one and it is doubtful I will ever again. The great news is that ADAM LAMBERT is a star and will be for many years to come.

Anonymous | 5/22/2009, 5:19 pm EST

It’s not that more people liked Kris Allen, it’s that less people liked him a lot more. My theory is that he won because of the support he got from Arkansas. Yeah, there’s not people here, but when something like this happens it’s a big deal. To people from Cali what’s another star, you know? But in Arkansas there is nothing better to do than watch and re-watch your DVR-ed American Idol while voting your brains out for Kris Allen the whole time discussing how sweet his wife is or how cute he is. They know these things because they go to same church of course or had class together at U of A or UCA. I’m from Arkansas and witnessed these things first hand. It’s obvious Adam was the better singer…

Kristin | 5/22/2009, 5:22 pm EST

Shylar,
i totally agree with u. i love how our country is ready for a black pres. and a possible women VP but not a gay Ai…….go fig…way to fail USA

Nimanthi | 5/22/2009, 5:33 pm EST

The reason I started watching Idol season 8 was Adam lambert.I’m a Adam fan from Sri Lanka. If American Idol is all about choosing a star it should have been Adam Lambert. B’cos he has the star quality.Kris can sing but he doesn’t have the star quality.Adam not only sings beautifully but expresses songs beautifully. That is his talent. Everything about him is unique from the way he sings to the way he dresses.People become great not by following others but by following their own path in life. I wish Adam Lambert follwo his own path to success.I wish him all the best.

Maddie | 5/22/2009, 5:37 pm EST

Everyone who says their done with American Idol because Adam didn’t win, need to remember they wouldn’t even know who Adam was if it wasn’t for AI.

Alizarmy | 5/22/2009, 5:38 pm EST

To be unique and original as Adam, means being different and the masses don’t appreciate, different. They are more comfortable with the familiar.
Adam is by far the most talented and original of all contestants ever to take part in American Idol.
Only time will prove his super stardom. As good as Chris is, he is not in the same league as Adam. He knows it, all the judges know it and the audience in the studio know it.

Nancy | 5/22/2009, 5:41 pm EST

OVIOUSLY BECAUSE HE HAS MORE FANS SO STOP SAYING HE DIDNT DESERVE TO WIN CAUSE HE DID!!!

Adam Lambert is the best singer and showman American Idol may ever see. For him to lose to someone that has no voice and no stage presence is a total disgrace… I will never watch the show again…

mel | 5/22/2009, 6:21 pm EST

i am so happy! I AGREE JHON I HATE ADAM AMERICA LIKES KRIS ALLEN BETTER!he will probly still be famous:(

Kiwi | 5/22/2009, 6:21 pm EST

Chris and Adam are too very different performers. Both excellent in their genre and both are winners. I was suprised Adam didn’t win, but accept Chris also deserved to win. There were no “losers” on the night. Chris is the 2009 AI Winner, and as history shows not winning the title doesn’t limit your success. Look at the beautiful Jennifer Hudson.

I think both Adam and Chris have bright futures in music and we all look forward to watching as they advance.

Clay Atkins – very sad individual who hopefully now regrets his comments. Adam outsings and out performs Clay, and on top of that he is one of the most humble, pleasent personalities to appear on tv in years. The same can be said for Chris. What a great finale where two young men from very different backgrounds showed their respect and admiration of each other.

America, lighten up – it’s not the end of the world and hopefully one day you will grow up enough to vote for the best, and not let your prejudices rule out a a flamboyant, over the top, homosexual.

Tony | 5/22/2009, 6:38 pm EST

America demonstrated what the world is showing – middle of the road anonymity is preferred to outstanding individual talent. We would rather recognise the individual with limited talent as the underdog then praise the guy with enoromous talent. It is a jealous world we live in and America robbed the world of the real American Talent. We will see Adam in 5,10,15 years but we will have forgotten Kris in a month. Well done America – you clearly worship mediocrity

Jacky | 5/22/2009, 7:17 pm EST

I’m in the U.K; A 46 year old, sensible adult woman-and I am now hopelessly infatuated with Adam Lambert, easily the best contestant EVER on A.I He oozes charisma and talent that puts him in a totally different league.Basically, he is way too good for A.I, and I sincerely hope that he makes the right decisions with his career, because he is a star in the making. “Mad World” was simply sublime, but everything he did was better than I have ever seen on this rather tiresome show.
Mark my words, Adam Lambert will be a superstar.

petey | 5/22/2009, 7:28 pm EST

I am still shocked and appauled over Adam’s loss. Mark my words I will NEVA watch American Asshole Idol again.

alex | 5/22/2009, 7:36 pm EST

Thank goodness Adam didn’t win. I didn’t want him to be tied to an awful song and boring talent killer contract. Now we can see and hear his diverse talent. Please come to GB Adam. Our boring singer scene needs you.

John, Your comment that everyone has different tastes in music. It was as singing competition. Not everyone who looks at art has any taste…not everyone who likes to sing can sing. if the EXPERTS say that Lambert should have won. You should realize that the votes that Kris received may not have been on his singing abilities and star quality, but rather other reasons.

Adam is the king.. Kris should have relinquished the title to its RIGHTFUL owner.. ADAM LAMBERT!! What a rip off… I will NEVER watch American Idol again! Kris even acknowledged at the end.. he did not deserve it!! Adam is and always will be the K I N G!!

Debra | 5/22/2009, 9:04 pm EST

Kris was adorable so I dont want to knock him but every time my husband and I heard Adam sing we would turn to each other and say how is this guy not already famous! I think that there is something wrong with the voting system because he was by far the best singer and performer EVER on Idol. No tears for him though, Im sure he’ll have a great career and I for one look forward to buying his music and seeing him on tour.

kalmant | 5/22/2009, 9:08 pm EST

adam is Axl Rose, Bon Jovi and Steven Taylor in one body he is the best

Adam is Taylor+Bon Jovi+Axl in one voice. U can not hear better than that. He is the king

Brensley | 5/22/2009, 9:17 pm EST

Adam Lambert is so unbelievably hot! I can’t believe that he lost! I would really like to see him try a My Chemical Romance song or 2. He would be great!

Mark | 5/22/2009, 9:56 pm EST

I think both Adam and Kris will be successful recording artists. While I applaud Adam’s vocal chops – I just don’t think I can listen to 50 minutes of him on a CD. Those high pitched notes he sings just aren’t that appealing to me.

Anger Building | 5/22/2009, 11:59 pm EST

American Idol is lame. The music to total garbage.

Sue | 5/23/2009, 12:30 am EST

I have always been a fan of American Idol, but this season was different. It was exciting, exhilarating and sensational and it was all because of Adam. I couldn’t wait to see what he would sing each week and he never let us down. He definately is the better talent and has definately “won”. Adam did not need to win to become a major star. Kris did need to win in order to get more attention. Kris is a nice guy, with talent but no one ever has compared with Adam. He is hands down the reason I watched the show and I suspect the reason most people watched.
I wish his the best of luck.

Steph | 5/23/2009, 12:49 am EST

I LOVE both Chris n Adam from the beginning… but I think with Adam’s unique n incredible voice that I think “different” from others AI contestant… he should win.. ^^
Indonesia wait for u n your album… >

Leisurebrainbaby! | 5/23/2009, 1:17 am EST

American Idol is rigged!

The reason Adam lost is, he can be successful w/out the win.

The other guy needs it more, no one would be checking for him if he lost.

Now AI can have two successful artists releasing albums.

Sandi | 5/23/2009, 1:37 am EST

Wow I kept hearing all the 14 yr olds were Kris fans, but based on some of the posts, it’s obvious Adam has that 14 yr old fan base wrapped up.

They gay thing is crap. My daughter is gay and she, her girlfriend and I watched it every weak. Adam lost us as fans with the Rings of Fire song. The Alison had us, then Kris got us with his last couple of songs. Kris reminds me (showing my age) James Taylor. I would not want to listen to a full cd of Adam, but I would Kris, Danny, or Alison. I am glad Kris won.

After 5 years of watching the show, I actually voted for the first time on finale night – in part because Adam was getting so much hype and I simply enjoyed listening to Kris sing more.

And a small point, when you disrespect Kris for winning, you are actually disrespecting Adam – afterall if it was rigged, did Adam really make it to the finals on his own, or did the show keep him on for ratings?

Mahalo | 5/23/2009, 3:14 am EST

My apologies Donne… I couldn’t put every countries here but tell you what Africa is one of the originators of dance and music and you are right on the money! I am sure Canada, England, Spain, France, Australia, Iceland, Sweden and all the other wonderful countries… will welcome Adam!
My grandfather made his fortune in Singapore, Malaysia and Hong kong. Prim minister Lee is my family’s friend; and by that I can assure you Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam and the rest of the beautiful Asian countries… will purchase Adam’s album and pay high price to see his concert when he arrives. Each citizen of any country can speak for him/herself and represent his/her country in good will, but not to scorn, condemn nor attack another in the name of his/her country! Felicia, you’re all right.
By the way I seriously doubt that anyone can take Elvis’s crown; however, Adam certainly has presence like Elvis on stage. I met Elvis in the early sixties in my uncle’s Mulholland Hill home; he was in jeans and polo shirt just like anyone else but when he steps on stage… he is the King! He was the nicest and most polite person I’ve ever met and Adam also possess that quality.

Mahalo | 5/23/2009, 4:27 am EST

By the way, Japan will certain put Adam on their billboard and calls him Adam-Rocker-San. If you think his goth make up is cool, wait till you see him in futuristic Kabuki Extravaganzas. Adam’s imagination is limitless and his talent has no boundaries. I can predict there will be “Adam” impersonations in many countries in a near future.
God bless young man … go East.

tbar | 5/23/2009, 9:54 am EST

The show is now a joke. When a performer like Adam, who is the best ever on that show loses to a mediocre singer like Kris it’s pathetic.I”ll never watch AI again.

lchwp | 5/23/2009, 11:42 am EST

The real way to judge who won AI is by measuring how much revenue they generate. Apparently 7 of the 10 songs from AI this year that were downloaded most often were Adam Lambert songs.
Far more people are willing to spend $ to hear Adam Lambert sing. They’re just not willing to spend 4 hours sending 1000 text

BOB | 5/23/2009, 12:42 pm EST

I think Kris is a down to earth young man who will have a hard time dealing with the fame and all imposed activities and orientations from AI. Did anyone see the comment from the MTV reporter, who witnessed a backstage incident after the AI finale? AI Execs kept forcing Kris to scream “I am going to Disneyworld” louder because he was not loud enough for them. He had to redo it 3 times. Poor thing…He is a low-profile stable family guy and he might crack under pressure whereas Adam seems more confident. Being a star is not always fun…I hope I am wrong for Kris but time will tell

I will be one of those who will not watch AI next season. I think that the voting process is a huge failure because anyone who wanted to vote could not do so in an equal fashion (busy lines, etc). It could have changed the results if the voting process was fair enough. I am not taking away Kris’s success here. He might have had MORE votes! I love Dancing W the Stars. Experts have a say and the people too. Now that’s fairness. I never understood why we don’t know the exact number of votes per week by candidate and by state.

bella | 5/23/2009, 12:54 pm EST

Kris is an all American Boy with some basic talents and being cute didn’t hurt either. My opinion is he needs American Idol to launch his professional career….! Adam is already a star and better off not tied to American Idol for the future. Best wishes to both of them….Alison & Danny were a couple of my favorites also.

Gilly just One fan | 5/23/2009, 3:23 pm EST

It echoes rare raw beauty a wonderful range in vocals so gifted to Freddie Mercury George Michael & Adam Lambert. Who won American Idol 2009 but who cares being just a media tool to opportune recognise & afford honour to such perfection in life.

adamcanadianfan | 5/23/2009, 4:46 pm EST

I never watched AI but i got hooked on the show after a friend begged me to watch this guy named Adam Lambert. I was amazed. My father is a very conservative man but he thought Adam belonged to a superior league compared to the other contestants.I have to agree!! Allison was also GREAT but lacked confidence! Anyhow, like someone said earlier here, if I want to listen to the guy next door playing guitar, I’ll go to the karaoke bar next door. Poor Kris needs a lot of support from AI producers to be successful. Adam will just attract other producers that know how to translate his talent worldwide. I am French Canadian and did you know Adam Lambert is a total French name? Lambert is like Johnson or Smith here!! LOL

daniq | 5/23/2009, 4:48 pm EST

Both will do well in their diverse paths . . . however, I DO agree with Connie that AI judges need to stop laveling the idol winner before he wins. I really lost respect for Paula and Simon for doing that.

Jeebs | 5/23/2009, 5:08 pm EST

I agree with America about the real winner of Idol, Kris.

Every week, I found it hard to listen to Adam’s contrived, uncomprehensible and often unnecessary off-pitch screams. I think Mad World was the only song of his I could tolerate.

Him being gay has nothing to do with it, it came down to a matter of Kris’ musical talent vs Adam’s over the top theatrics.

Sal | 5/23/2009, 5:21 pm EST

Does everyone – including RollingStone – believe that Kris had more fans and that he won because his music was what the audience preferred? Those conclusions are invalid because of the ridiculous voting process. The true winner of American Idol is AT&T. Their profits have soared. Don’t expect American Idol to change the voting (vote early and often) process. As Dylan said. . .Money doesn’t talk it swears. Adam was the best singer and performer. Kris was inconsistent and had weak vocals on many occasion…amen, oops I meant ahem.

sugarfrog | 5/23/2009, 5:30 pm EST

I did not want Adam to win and here’s why. Week after week he strutted out in some outfit, perfectly coiffed, some theatrics – stairs, backlights, fog – and at some point in his song he screeched out some shrill note at the top of his lungs. I do not recall Adam ever engaging the audience next to the stage – so he came across to me as slightly aloof. Yes, I admit his performances were spot on, but he didn’t engage me emotionally, and after awhile I found Adam banal. I wouldn’t buy a CD or attend a concert to listen to the screeching, either.

Belinda - BIGGEST ADAM FAN | 5/23/2009, 5:51 pm EST

I was totally depressed when they announced that Kris had won. He’s a good guy but nowhere near Adam. Adam is an amazing talent. It was such a shame that Adam didn’t win based on that fact that Adam had outstanding performances everytime. I LOVE ADAM!

Belinda - BIGGEST ADAM FAN | 5/23/2009, 5:54 pm EST

I LOVE ADAM, AND HE DESERVED TO WIN AMERICAN IDOL 8 BASED ON HIS OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCES EVERY SINGLE WEEK!!

Kamie | 5/23/2009, 9:09 pm EST

I love Kris Allen. He is such a great singer with a cool vibe in his music. Adam is whatever. His voice actually hurt to listen to when he went high. I am sure he will do well BUT all this talk about Adam deserving it more & all is nuts. Kris grew each week & is much more contemporary/radio friendly. BTW – for those who say this is because he is gay – you are fooling yourselves. If that was the case – Adam never would have made it into the finale. Maybe, just maybe, people LIKE listening to music that doesn’t scream & screech at you. Stop with all the homophobia rhetoric and get real.

Fact Is... | 5/24/2009, 4:56 am EST

That Adam just had to have his little scream into every song he sang. Mighty impressive that he has the range, but frankly a bit tiresome for a broad audience. Adam would have great singles, but a whole album will need some consideration if he doesn’t wake up and do something other than peel out screamers. A side note… the duet with Adam and Allison definitely should have been Ozzy and Lita, Close my Eyes Forever – they should team up and score a number one!

Pauly1 | 5/24/2009, 7:34 am EST

It doesn’t matter what people think, the fact is that Adam was ripped off as he had already emerged as the stand out performer by the time the competition reached the top 10. Adding high notes etc into his song selections or whatever he was the most consistent most talented performer this competition has ever seen. He was given a standing ovation by the judges initiated by Simon himself. He was also likened to Mick Jagger and Steve Tyler by Paula Abdul and rightly so. Not to take anything away from Kris because he was good but Adam was great, he was exciting and had you eagerly anticipating what he was going to perform next and to want to be possibly recruited as the new front man for Queen well that says it all. I don’t know what really happened with the voting but most votes or not Adam is the real Idol winner hands down!

George | 5/24/2009, 9:11 am EST

Chris winning is the same process that gave us George Bush for president (twice!). Folksy style with little talent is apparently a winning combination down south.

I still could not believe it that Adam lost. He is obviously the best and most entertaining singer in the entire show!!!
I can’t wait to buy his album . I hope he will come to Singapore soon for a ROCKING concert.
Adam I LOVE YOU!!

Deborah | 5/24/2009, 9:50 am EST

There has been a lot written about the voting, specifically from Arkansas. I’ve seen an article from a local newspaper in Conway (as opposed to word of mouth) reporting how AT & T handed out Go Phones and gave training on how to ‘power text’, obviously enabling multiple texting in huge amounts, even providing facilities to recharge phones when they ran out of juice for voting parties in Arkansas – none of which, from all that I’ve seen written, was offered or provided in San Diego.

It would be very easy for AT & T to refute these claims. If it wasn’t the case, why haven’t they??

I’d like to add that I adore both Adam and Kris (and their ‘bromance’ ;) ), and think they’re both incredibly talented, just very different in their styles. What I don’t like is it seems that because of the likes of AT & T, and what not only seems to be some shady actions but there secrecy in refusing to just release the d*mn stats breakdown (by phone, text, states, numbers per person etc), a wonderful season has been been tarnished. They could just put the speculation to be bed. Sad :(

Paula | 5/24/2009, 10:12 am EST

It’s true that Adam is supertalented and has the potential to become a music icon. But let’s face it guys, majority of Idol fans are women. That’s one of the reasons why Cook won over Archuleta. Fans wanted a man, not a boy. In the case of Adam & Kris, Adam is handsome but he really didnt really make women go gaga over him. Plus, Kris’ songs appeal to a wider audience. Idol viewers prefer mainstream music. Lastly, the judges declaration of a winner even before the voting started drove fans to vote more aggressively for the underdog. So in short, Adam lost to Kris because : Kris established his male sexuality more and thus appealed to the women who were the majority of viewers, it was easier to listen to Kris’ songs than Adam’s, the judges all but declared Adam the winner and drove fans to vote for Kris

Deborah | 5/24/2009, 10:36 am EST

Paula,
Hope you don’t mind my slight disagreement here, but I think that there’s been a bit of shift in idol in the last few seasons insofaras people seem to want more than just singing, but artistry. That is why I think Cook won last year, and why you had two people in the final this year that always changed arrangements on songs, tried to put their own spin on them. Changed things up week on week. In that way, Idol is most definitely going in the right direction. I think its doing a slight disservice to Cook’s talent and originality to say he won ‘because women wanted a man rather than a boy’- I think with the introduction of instruments to the show and contestants who exhibited more than just vocals skills they came to want and expect more. Thats not to say Archie had no artistry, he did, but for my money nowhere near the instinctual originality or talent of Cook.

Al | 5/24/2009, 10:52 am EST

George,

I agree with you. The results of Idol were akin to the Bush / Gore election.

The unlikable, blowhard, big-mouth screamer that was completely out of touch with what American really wanted… lost.

In the election, too.

So the better, albeit not perfect option, won.

(I chuckled when I read George’s post. Obama is blaming everything on the past administration, and now even the results of Idol have to somehow be associated with Bush! hahaha)

Sal | 5/24/2009, 11:03 am EST

We’ll never know if Kris had more VOTERS or just more multiple votes per voter. AT&T made a lot of money off of this voting process, so it is unlikely that American Idol will change. The real question is how much did it cost to cast those multiple votes for Kris to enable him to beat Adam and was it worth the cost? The voting process is a corporate scam! Adam was the best singer and performer -as many are saying, he is in a class of his own. On a another note, what was that last song? Gawd, I hope someone doctors that up before I ever have to hear it again. Even a talent like Adam’s couldn’t save it and Kris strained his vocal cords trying to sing it. Ugh! In general, however, Adam makes singing look easy and Kris is many times straining just to get the notes out.

Max | 5/24/2009, 11:32 am EST

To George (who claims that Kris winning American Idol is the same as George Bush winning elections.) If you would check the political stronghold of Arkansas, Arkansas is primarily Democrat (possibly ever since Bill Clinton won and with the only exception of the previous three presidential elections), the governor, lieutenant governor, two senators and the three congressmen are from the Democratic party. Only one current Arkansas congressman is Republican.

The Arkansas congressman who is representing the region where Conway (Kris’ hometown) is from the Democratic party. I don’t think that just because Kris is a devout Christian doesn’t mean that he is already a Republican (Heck even most Democrats are also Christians). Remember Kris did not bring up the religion issue during his entire run on American Idol. He probably got Christian votes due to extensive research of ardent American Idol patrons/voters/viewers after Danny Gokey was voted off. (But even Wisconsin-Danny’s homestate- is also primarily Democrat) I think this is also the first time that the Top 5 American Idol finalists came from blue states.

Oldtimer | 5/24/2009, 11:43 am EST

I’m showing my age but Adam Lambert reminded me of the child Wayne Newton, Elvis and Liberace would have have had. Extremely talented, huge range, handsome and glitzy but not someone who’s music I would listen to in real life.

I liked many of Kris’s arrangements and would possibly buy a CD of his and that is what Idol is about, making money.

Sal | 5/24/2009, 4:26 pm EST

Oldtimer, I was thinking more along the lines of Roy Orbison and the young Elvis. Wayne Newton and Liberace. . .nope, don’t see it and don’t hear it. You seem content with American Idol being all about the money. No wonder these corporate scams continue to pay off. I really love the concept of talent shows; but when Idol joined hands with the corporate giant AT&T and their profit per vote technology, I agree with you, it became all about the money. Kris got more votes, I guess, but not necessarily more voters.

silvernana | 5/24/2009, 5:14 pm EST

To anyone who thinks Adam didn’t appeal to women, go to his web site, adamofficial.com, and read the letters from hundreds of fans from all over the world, including half of which are women in their 50’s and 60’s, including their husbands, who think they are witnessing the coming out of the next Elvis. It is a phenomenon, the likes of which I’ve never seen. I’m in my mid 60’s, a conservative Christian, don’t like Rock music, and still am wild about Adam and never in my life have written a fan letter. I can’t tell you how many letters on that site say the same thing. Adam will be a huge star, and all these people know it.

4Sal | 5/24/2009, 5:28 pm EST

Sal: What was preventing Adam’s fans from voting multiple times, too? If both fan-bases could vote exact same ways, then they playing field was level.

Neither of them have “talent” in the way I define it that would have ever pushed them to the level they are because of American Idol. Adam is probably more of an entertainer and more flexible, but his screaming was very difficult to listen to. Kris had the “nice boy” appeal and good looks to get all the teenie bopper girls (and boys?) to swoon.

My question is why in the heck do we continue to pick “talent” this way? What happened to the old starving artist that worked hard and struggled to get where they were? Their talent and voices showing that “grit” and hard work. We are manufacturing “low talents” and promoting them to star status. If not for American Idol, Kris would be singing with a hometown garage band and Adam would probably be doing Cabaret acts in some gay bar in San Francisco.

Speaking of which… another reason I believe Adam failed to get votes from “America” is that the majority of Americans, and I’m not talking “big city folk” or “the coastal crowds” really do not understand the guy-liner and stereotypical gay culture that Adam represented… the photos of him in drag kissing other men is most probably what got him half the votes as Kris in the end.

He was just a bit too bizarre to be an “American Idol”. Getting as far as he did, however, said a LOT for his abilities, compared to all the others. I am frankly surprised he was not booted quite a bit earlier.

Sal | 5/24/2009, 6:29 pm EST

4SAL: I really agree with you. I think that American Idol was doomed to be exactly what it has become. The concept had inherent flaws and combine that with the technological multiple voting system and you get Kris. I guess I have some idealistic notion that a talent show could be a good way for beginning artists to get noticed, but not with the current state of our corporate media! The show was more interested in selling gophones (or whatever they are called), Fords, Coke, and that awful No Boundaries song. I admit that I got sucked into watching because of the anomaly of Adam’s talent. So, I agree with you to a degree. I can’t really even imagine certain artists going through that media hyped process. It is laughable or sad or both. But I also think it is a metaphor for what is wrong with the music industry today. On a similar note, how on earth did American Idol get Santana to appear??

Serra Angel | 5/24/2009, 7:40 pm EST

Honestly the main reason, I believe, is Kris Allen’s legions of fangirls. Comments on other sites such as youtube keep popping up like “oh he is so hot” or, “oh he is so cute”. It bothers me that Adam a fresh revolution who is seeming to bring classic rock style with a new twist back to the table, got cast aside maybe because today teens like me are into stuff like the Jonas Brothers etc.. To get my point across, some say that the show got rigged, others say that it was the fans. But even so Adam will still be better in the eyes of his true fans and, will probably be like Chris Daughtry who started his own band as a runner up. This is still an outrage but it couldn’t have been avoided. Adam will still always be great and there is will be many a fangirl who can say that, “ooo Adam stinks he is weird and Kris is cool.” That is probably the best insult they can throw. As an added note because Kris is Christian fans hide behind it as a reason to like him. Some Kris won because of the Christian vote. Adam is a winner in my book.

Jessie | 5/24/2009, 7:47 pm EST

Adam should have won. It seems as if the stereotypical fangirls made Kris get the win. It seems that a big issue that pops up is Kris’s Religion. Fangirls hide behind it as an excuse to say he is a good little church choir boy. Adam twisted and blew up the stage with his desire to create new stuff in old songs. Kris on the other hand only did one great performance with “Heartless” and that does not seem to add up to Adam’s week after week banaza of greatness. But whatever the reason Adam is a rock genius in my book.

KissOff | 5/24/2009, 8:33 pm EST

Jessie: In a related Rolling Stone article, Gene Simmons of KISS said Adam is NOT a rock singer. He said he’s better off doing ballads and broadway.

I agree with Mr. Simmons; Adam is a wannabee Rock Singer at best.

Adam Lambert was the Idol who captured the world’s attention. Kris Who ? I never liked the dull contestant Kris from day one. There was about nine other singers in the top ten who were better than Kris.

The thing is that Idol use to have a WORLD Idol Contest, not sure if they will do it this year, but all the winners from each Country compete. Kris would not even make it to the top five in that, I’m pretty sure Adam would.
Kris Allen is not even the more attractive singer. Adam was more handsome and looked like Elvis.
I think it was pure and simple a “revenge vote” against Adam, not so much for Kris.
Why is America angry that judges liked Adam? Those judges know real talent like Adam’s, as opposed to mediocre talent like Kris’s.

Adam never said he was gay, so stop it. He’s hot and I’m a woman. I could care less.
Kris looks like a person who will be bald in 10 years, then where will his tween voters be?

MaryK | 5/25/2009, 10:38 pm EST

I’m done with Idol. This year was a farce. Adam was clearly the most talented singer/performer and class act during interviews. What was with the mousy little guy who ‘won’?

To_Portia | 5/25/2009, 11:38 pm EST

Adam never said he was gay on the show. But his prior actions not only showed he was gay, but also that he was flamboyantly gay. And all his flamboyantly gay supporters were blogging very early on that “finally an openly gay man is going to win Idol”! People think gay has to be over the edge and in your face. There are bizarre pictures of him all over the internet that probably helped to make him less appealing as an AMERICAN idol. If he had considered the cross dressing and over the top photos at the time he was taking them and decided against them, he may have gone further on American Idol. But I have to wonder why someone like Adam would have even considered American Idol as a place to showcase his “talents”. American Idol is so… hokey.

If he really had true talent he would have easily succeeded in other ways. Because he really does not, he had to take the easy route. Being judged by people (most of America) that don’t really know talent. They just know celebrity. Just look to the last election to figure that out.

Sal | 5/26/2009, 2:04 am EST

Portia: Look to the last election?? What?? You need to look to the two elections before that to see how vote fixing works. President Obama won fair and square. Anyway, your comments about Adam sound a bit homophobic. Don’t worry about his sexuality just compare the two performances. AND this time you only get one vote!

carrd49 | 5/26/2009, 9:47 am EST

To Sal….you say Adam has no talent? Have you really checked out all of his performances? He sang a song in Brigadoon which was hauntingly beautiful and shows he truly has talent. It just depends on how he chooses to use it. I don’t think you would know true talent if it hit you in the face…really.

To_Portia | 5/26/2009, 9:49 am EST

Sal… like most Obama supporters… you entirely missed the point.

And, sure enough, like your spokesperson Janeane Garofolo, you are quick to throw out the “homophobic” or “racist” comments.

I do not recall any “celebrity” votes in the last election. I do not recall seeing people wearing Bush or even Clinton t-shirts. Watch the videos of those who voted for Obama… those that wore the flashy tshirts… few of them knew a thing about what is going on in the world. They voted for celebrity.

And why else would Adam have gotten so few votes compared to Kris. America was turned off by something and it was not the comparison of their talent. He’s not just gay, he’s over the top gay. Being turned off by that does not make one a homophobe.

Sal | 5/26/2009, 10:39 am EST

carrd49: Huh?? Are you kidding?? I am an Adam fan. His talent far exceeds any of the American Idol contestants. In fact, he is one of the most talented contestants that Idol has ever seen. Every time Adam was on the stage, even with the winner, all I could do was watch and listen to him. Kris’ performances just didn’t match what Adam could do on the stage. How did you get that I thought he didn’t have any talent? I do think Kris was a mediocre talent, boring really, and that Adam was robbed. What I am not a fan of is the silly voting process, no matter how much money it made for AT&T, it was just another corporate scam that robbed Adam of the title. You need to reread all of my comments. I’m on your side!

Sal | 5/26/2009, 11:15 am EST

Portia: Yes, I guess I didn’t get your point and I still don’t. Isn’t Idol all about seeking celebrity? The word “Idol” sort of says it all. According to you, it was okay that Adam was gay but he needed to tone it down a little? Did I get that right? His problem, you say, was his flamboyantly gay persona. I just didn’t see any of that – flamboyantly gay stuff – in his performances. All I heard was a well-tuned voice with a rare range. I think you are mixing up too many issues. Adam was the most talented singer in the singing contest. Your Obama references give your real intentions away. Enough said.

Oliver | 5/26/2009, 2:36 pm EST

Adam is single and Krissy is married til death do they part. Adam has more talent, stage presence, good looks, etc. than Kris! THE WINNER IS ADAM LAMBERT! WHAT???????? YOU’VE GOT TO BE KIDDING? Krissy won? America has no ears, eyes, brains, etc.!!!!!!!!!!!

tij | 5/26/2009, 4:34 pm EST

I should have warned Adam Lambert about the American Idol viewers. They are not the buying public. They only buy to support their idol. The buying public are those who listen to the radio. Anyhow, aside from that, the AI viewers are mostly middle-aged women who are bored or boring. They never vote for the one who will win in life after idol. This is because they are jealous animals and do not want one person to have it all. So when it comes time to the final two, majority of the time, America will choose the post-idol loser as the winner. CONTINUED…

tij | 5/26/2009, 4:36 pm EST

CONTINUED from post below. Anyhow, Adam Lambert’s strategy should have been the following: Start the AI week as being below average but enough to stay in the competition. In other words, don’t blow everyone away. The key is to avoid having the judges lavish him with praises. Then he grows a little every week but enough to keep him in the competition while avoiding lavish praises from the judges. He does this until the final two. When the final two comes, he surprises everybody with his talent and performance while on the verge of tears as if he could not believe he was good. Now everybody will think little Adam grew from being below average to above average in like 12 weeks. AI voters love the struggle stories. The AI voters are the ones that watch SOAP operas so they always vote for the struggling one, the one that has more drama (sob story) in his/her life. America usually never votes for the obvious best idol, because America is a jealous country. They don’t want the best idol to have it all.

Gia | 5/27/2009, 7:16 am EST

You all need to grow up!! Who cares if Kris will be bald in ten years or if Adam is gay. They are both very talented and they both deserved to win but unfortunately, only one will be crowned. Adam will do amazing and I am sure that he is very proud of his accomplishment. Kris is the winner and let him enjoy his accomplishment without all the negative feedback. When was the last time you all went into a compitition – I think you all know that only ONE person wins so Stop all the baby la la stuff and start enjoying the music that these two talented musicians will be recording.

Merle | 5/27/2009, 8:43 am EST

I wish Kris all the best, he’s a great guy and a good singer.

I think Adam lost because of a couple of things. The first being that American Idol is a family based show (although some of the judges’ antics bother my grandkids) and they want an all American winner. To them Adam was too over the top, forget his talent, American Idol wants the audience first. I also think the tweens do a lot of the voting and will text all night, and that’s okay since that is the riduculous way American Idol has set it up. There were probably a lot of people voting against Adam because he was gay, and that’s sad, but American Idol brings out the worst and best in people, and American Idol knows how to manipulate its’ audience.

I agree with you, ANNIE, “A Change is Gonna Come” was wonderful and so were Adam’s other songs on the finals but by that time the momentum was going toward Kris.
There has never been any one quite like Adam around for years. He dared to be different each week and only got better. I can’t wait to see what he does next.

storm | 5/27/2009, 10:46 am EST

i wonder whats the connection of being gay to the competition in american idol? it seems the american voters aren’t matured enough to accept the individuality of a contestant like adam lambert.

to think that america is a land of the FREE and yet in this AI competition, adam lambert was prejudiced by voters becuase of his gender. This is sad, a talented guy like adam lambert was not voted by america because he is gay hahahahahahaha…..
when will this people learn to move on with the current trend????

Rob | 5/27/2009, 11:05 am EST

First off I think tij and his conspiricies are retarded. Second, good job to both finalists even though IMO Adam is better. I think we’ll be seeing some great stuff from them aswell as others such as Danny.

PJ | 5/27/2009, 12:36 pm EST

Adam is the best and most intriguing. Kris is good. But many Americans are conservative and religious and were more comfortable with Kris. I knew Adam would not win the final voting.

Mar | 5/27/2009, 2:16 pm EST

I think the article is right on the money. While the texting conspiracy is kinda boring me, I agree that the voting system is terrible.

lhong | 5/27/2009, 2:49 pm EST

i agree with storm..

america should learn how to judge people correctly despite of the gender of the contestants.. IMO adam is better than kris though kris is good. Although Kris really deserves to be the winner, Adam should have been declared as the Next AI why? because if you wud look at it, through the said season Adam Lambert really smashed the audience every week by his music.. while kris is “just” an underdog..

Kris deserves to have the title but base from the performances Adam should have veen the title holder this season!.. goodluck to the both of them..

Oli* | 5/27/2009, 9:58 pm EST

To all you people who are saying that women don’t go completely gaga over Adam: DO SOME RESEARCH!!!! Have you even been paying attention. Adam is said to be the reincarnation of Elvis, WHO DO YOU THINK HAS BEEN GIVING HIM THIS TITLE? To say that Kris deserved the title more than Adam is a complete disgrace to true talent and artistry. Yes, Kris is talented, and I do not mean to, in any way, offend him or his devoted fans. However, even people who are fan’s of Kris have to admit that Adam is the most talented. Even if Kris’s fans dislike Adam’s style, music, arangements, originality (or anything else for that matter), they have to stop the hate and realize that, this year, American Idol has uncovered one of the biggest stars on the planet: Adam. Whether you like Adam or not (that is entirely up to you), bashing him is complete nonesense. You would have to be completely blind or deaf not to see that this man has and incomparable talent.

The Jean Genie | 5/27/2009, 10:05 pm EST

Haha. You guys are all suck fucks.

ANNIE | 5/27/2009, 11:19 pm EST

American Idol was a big disappointment this year. They need to come up with a better way for viewers to vote.
Americans were a big disappointment this year!m How can you have not voted for Adam? Are you kidding me? Adam is like Elvis re-incarnated and even better! I have not seen anyone quite like him! I miss watching him every week do his thing. It is a good thing that I purchased every single one of his videos. Yes! You go Adam. I will say I am sorry for America letting you down. You are the winner in my eyes! Good luck! You will go far.

The Legend | 5/27/2009, 11:58 pm EST

This article completely misses a key point. Arkansas was very well organized and had help from AT&T in hosting texting parties and power texts. This and the GIZMO software allowed Arkansas to get 38 million out of the 100 million votes. On group of 105 Arkansas voters bragged how they did over 410,000 votes with this technology.
AT & T is being investigated as are some of the Arkansas groups for rules violation.

The other main reason Adam lost is that every week in which a contestant got kicked off, mad Kris’s voting club stronger. A Danny Gokey fan would gravitate towards the next reasonable similiar singer, which is Kris. Adam was the extreme opposite.

Adam lost beacause a small state of 2.8 million people organized three universities, thousands of cell phones, sending thousands of text messages and Gokeys voters went towards the familiar instead of talent.
This was not a singing contest it was a technology and popularity contest.

I hate every stupid bitch who had voted for kris.. like they vote for blake and let melinda who deserve to be the winner go home… whp’s blake now ?? CRAP !!

it’s a shocker !! like tamyra gray, daughtry, jennifer hudson, melinda doolittle, lakisha jones, who didn’t won but gain a big succes for their own career…

hope adam will go far away than kris…
fuck allen, go lambert !!!

How sad, indeed. | 5/29/2009, 5:11 pm EST

Thank you Do-Gooder. I couldn’t even continue to read these postings! I can’t believe the pathetic lack of English skills people have today. At least don’t embarass yourself and avoid posting to the internet until you learn how to write, spell and punctuate!

mrbill | 5/29/2009, 10:24 pm EST

I am a 61 straight year old republican and I voted for Adam Lambert. The boy has more range and much better vocals then any American Idol ever. As a matter a fact, all of my like minded friends feel the same way. Even the ones that hate gays. I will so far as to say Adam is better then Stevie Tyler and Freddie Mercury.

Belle | 5/30/2009, 11:02 am EST

There are sooooo many reasons for why Adam lost but none of them seem to be reasonable…the reasons have nothing to do with the amount of talent he has. I’ve never seen any one like him on American Idol and the funny thing is that even Kris Allen fans know it…I was for Adam ever since the beginning and my best friend was for Kris. When the winner was announced i called her to congragulate her but she wasn’t even happy. I asked her why she wasn’t happy and she was like “as much as I love Kris, I know that Adam deserved to win.”

KISSFAN2 | 5/30/2009, 1:32 pm EST

Adam is stlyed to be in Queen. But man he screams every song and kind of looks like Criss Angel. He should have went on America’s Got Talent. He needs a Vegas show for his persona. Best of Luck to you Adam!

mere | 6/1/2009, 5:18 pm EST

I am a 52 year old woman and my vote went to Adam. He should have won and I will not watch AI again. There is no need to. No one has or ever will again match his talent. I think AI’s ratings will drop next year, due to the fact Adam did not win. As well they should!!!

Ldr10135 | 6/1/2009, 5:19 pm EST

Hi, I want to say to Mc that Adam never confirm or denied he was gay at all he said maybe anyway I take that either way. Clay Aiken denied it for years to his fans and the press too until last year after he had his son he said he was gay. I was more mad at Clay lying to his fans than he was gay. I’m more accepting people being gay anyway. I had gay friends before. To me Adam will one day soon tell the truth if he is gay or not anyway at least Adam is not lying to his fans like Clay did at all. Not everybody is a hypocrite on whether Adam is gay or not anyway if Adam is gay so what. I’m don’t care Adam music is different from Clay plus Clay should of what the whole season of AI before he base his opinion on one song of Adam anyway. Yes MC I’m a Clay Aiken fan but disagree his opinion on AI and Adam. I’m sort of :) Adam didn’t win anyway because Adam is getting more press coverage than Kris. Adam might be more popular when his CD comes out than Kris CD time will tell when they come out.Good article on why Adam didn’t win AI good theories on it.

I agree with some of what you said. I think that Adam’s best performances (including Mad World) mostly came at the beginning or middle of the season. Kris began giving more confident, creative performances toward the middle of the season and this culminated with his crowning performance of “Heartless.” This song may have ultimately won him the competition. I thought both of them did brilliantly with their songs they sang previously in the season. Neither of them did well with the song “No Boundaries” — a song which had they each rearranged would have fit their voices better. I felt Simon Fuller’s pick for Kris Allen worked much better for him. Put that together with “Heartless” the week before and vocally and performance-wise Kris was now in a better place to win. I think many of the other issues came into play, but that performance-wise this was it.

I was and am a fan of both, but I still prefer Adam’s exciting performance style. I will probably buy both CDs.

I actually think that if any song “lost” the competition for Adam, it was his choice of “Cryin’” in the final 2. He had an amazing performance and really nailed the song. Dead on, excellent rendition. But, we already saw that he could kill a wailing rock song when he did Led Zeppelin. He was “preaching to the choir” with that performance. He was wowing the fans that were already going to vote for him. He needed to grab back the people who were on board during the Tracks of My Tears/Mad World run. It would have been more strategic to just sing a song in his middle register, a very melodic one that shows off the quality of his amazing voice. He needed to “pull it back” on that one after he wailed out the emotional ending of U2’s “ONE.” (His studio version of ONE is, I think, his best of the entire season. I think it is even better than Mad World). Anyway, he will be the mega star and world wide sensation, so he has gotten everything that he hoped to achieve.

Megan | 6/3/2009, 9:52 am EST

I completely agree with some of the points you made about why he lost. Main points for me:

1. Root for the underdog appeal of Kris (worked last year for Cook as well)
2. People tend to go toward the “middle-of-the-road” pick (esp. with Idol) when they only have 2 choices left to make. And since Adam was far from the “middle”, that put him at more of a disadvantage.
3. Danny votes going to Kris
4. Adam’s greatest strength became a weakness: Idol favors people who do one style and fit a specific characterization all season long (like Daughtry doing rock, Carrie doing Country). Adam could, and did, every style so well (with that amazing voice of his), so those who loved his ballads may not have loved his extreme rock side, etc. He loved to show the versatility, but it meant fans had to “pick and choose” what they loved about him. Kris stayed consistent and safe all season, which won him fans of that particular style.

In the end, Adam, imo, was the only person deserving of the win this year. He made this season, and though Kris is very talented and has a nice voice, he was no where near Adam’s caliber as either a performer or singer. Watching compilations of all their performances only highlights that fact: Kris’s performances are mainly safe and forgettable. Adam just explodes off the stage.

Adam Fan | 6/9/2009, 12:49 pm EST

I truly believe Adam’s talent superceded Kris’ talent by far. I also believe American Idol is not yet ready for a gay idol. They’re still going with the kid next door since the finalists are supposed to be role models for the upcoming generations. How would that look? I also believe the Danny gokey voters swayed over to Kris’ side once Danny left the show. Adam will still be the mega-star he dreamed of; just not the finalist.

ozzie | 6/9/2009, 1:15 pm EST

Adam lost because he has no talent, or maybe it was the gay makeup and clothes. Maybe he will make a couple of albums, be THE NEXT ELVIS???? I dont think so. Elvis wasn’t gay, and Elvis had talent.

Two winners, no losers | 6/9/2009, 1:19 pm EST

I feel that both Adam and Chris are good singers and both will be successful in their careers. I really enjoyed Adam’s performances along with his vocal range, but I also really connected with the unique sound of Chris’s voice. I think they both deserved to win, but only one could win. It came down to what personally touched each voter. Adam may not have won idol, but he is still not a loser as a singer.

Anonymous | 6/9/2009, 1:30 pm EST

Clay Aiken!

cs | 6/9/2009, 2:10 pm EST

Adam was brilliant week after week. Who knows why people vote or do not vote, it’s not about fairness. One could vote 10 times for Adam and it not mean anything when compared to a 10 year who votes 50 times for Kris. Moreover, it’s sad that America is fixated on issues that digress from someone’s true star quality and performance ability. It’s not that Kris was bad; he gave decent efforts and improved throughout the season, and yes, he seems like a nice guy, but as a performer he is, was, so ordinary–so like so much already out there. Kris-alapoolza will carry him through his first album with a lot of hype but I don’t think he’ll last. Adam will.

Dina | 6/9/2009, 2:30 pm EST

Gay is O.K. But the make-up and black fingernails turned most of us off! It took away from his talent, which he does have in abundance! Dina

Katie | 6/9/2009, 3:27 pm EST

Who cares if Adam is gay. Katy Perry is bi! No one has a problem with that. I kinda like his eyeliner, it makes his eyes all the more brilliant. and his black nail polish is pretty! Adam and Kris were both always my favorites. Kris was safe. He sang well(still does) and had his own way of doing things. Adam wasn’t safe. He stayed in. He rearranged most of his songs to fit his voice.
and “Mad World” won the competition for him. I think the song that made Kris win was “Ain’t No Sunshine.” But they are both very talented, special people.
They both won.

Are you completely crazy Ozzie? What are you smokin’? No talent? LMAO! All I have to say is..let’s just wait all this out. Time will definitely tell and how many millions of records he sells.

George A | 6/9/2009, 3:50 pm EST

Adam is no star, rock or otherwise. An entertainer, maybe, but so is the class clown.

ADAMFAN | 6/9/2009, 3:52 pm EST

Basically Adam should’ve won he started off as the best and ended as the best, yes Kris is talented and got better through the show, but Adam is in a whole other league, the league of legends like Aerosmith, Kiss, an many others. It should be based on talent alone, when ur listening to the radio u don’t know if the singer is gay or straight. Adam had all the older more mature voters who will actually be able to purchase his music, not the 10 year olds like Kris has that will have to beg there mommys for the money. In the end Adam will be the bigger star, its just said America hasn’t got past sexuality, i mean voting for him is saying u enjoy his music not that he’s gay.

Anonymous | 6/9/2009, 5:35 pm EST

The 80′over and so’s adam music- was too sure of himself- boohoo he lost – get over it folks-

Debra | 6/9/2009, 5:55 pm EST

I am so happy to see the 50 and 60 year olds voted for Adam. I am 54, also straight (married for 34 years) and also very conservative and a Christian. I voted for Adam because of his talent, and he was the most talented of all of the contestants. I will not buy Kris’s album because he is “forgettable” though a very nice guy. I will be anxiously waiting to purchase Adam’s album though and wish him the greatest success.

Amanda | 6/9/2009, 6:25 pm EST

I liked them both and your right the gay issues is of no concern. however i voted for kris and i’m sure as heck not 10 yrs old, so you may want to retract that the older gen didn’t vote for kris only the little 10yr old kiddies.

i | 6/9/2009, 6:34 pm EST

To all you dumb fucks who think that kris allen has any talent at all, you need a doctor! HE HAS NO TALENT! Also to those of you who think that being gay has anything to do with someone’s gender, you need help too. Being gay has nothing to do with gender. Being gay has everything to do with a person’s sexuality. Your gender doesn’t affect if you are or are not gay. Also to those of you who don’t know how to write or speak proper english, GO BACK TO FUCKING SCHOOL! No one is ever going to think you have a brian in that empty head of your’s if you don’t learn to speak and write proper english. Also Dina this part is for you: MAKE-UP AND NAIL POLISH HAS NO AFFECT WHAT SO EVER ON SOMEONE’S TALENT! OH, AND OZZIE, NO ONE GIVES A FLYING FUCK WHAT YOU SAY! YOU have no talent, ADAM does!

Janie | 6/9/2009, 6:59 pm EST

Adam is a queer! Who didn’t know it before sure knows it now! What an idiot. Girls, your dream man is queerer than a $3.00 bill.

Jamie | 6/9/2009, 7:03 pm EST

You know what, Adam lambert should have won,i voted for him and guess what he didnt win,but im from arkansas and there was no txting partys and such going on what so ever like homo said there was, sure alot of people voted for him over and over but guess what so did adams fans.get over it adam lost because women liked the good guy they seen in kris we all know who will win in the blong run so leave it the fuck alone and get over it. american idol has always had bs winners so why is it such a big deal now. kris is happy and so is adam.your not them so leave it be.maybe adam is happy with the results. you ever think bout that

Jean | 6/9/2009, 8:31 pm EST

Debra: You are SO right. I think us ‘older’ people (I’m 46) have been around the block and know real raw talent when we see it. It isn’t too often that we get to see three amazing performers in a lifetime (Elvis, Michael Jackson, and now Adam Lambert) I think the ‘young people’ just don’t understand this. But that’s ok…as I have stated before, time will tell..it will tell everything. I wonder what the naysayers are going to say when his first album goes triple platinum? This is just the beginning for Adam Lambert. He is going to be around for a very long time and I can’t wait to see what he does.

Betty Pettegrew | 6/9/2009, 10:27 pm EST

Guys come’on..EVERYONE knows..some are afraid to admit;..Adam is as Elvis was, born and destin to be a STAR; Charismatic, likeable, extremely popular, sexy, and MEGA talented..now the rest of you simply relax and watch the “Adam Lambert Haters” be the first in line to purchase his album!!

super | 6/10/2009, 12:05 am EST

apparently there are alot of people out there that are into screeching instead of singing

GlamFan | 6/13/2009, 2:46 pm EST

I wonder how many of the Adam Lambert bashers out there are Elton John fans? Or wear Dolce & Gabbana? Geez! Talent is talent–leave the guy’s private life private. He’s mesmerizing and a true entertainer. Can’t wait to see what the future brings!

Starry Eyed | 6/14/2009, 4:15 am EST

Hey Kamie: Since “Adam’s singing “hurt your ears” and “made Clay’s ears “bleed” maybe the two of you should have a cry fest when Adam catapults to the top and Kris still is trying to get a note out without contorting his face and straining to maintain a note.

HollyNicole | 6/20/2009, 12:51 pm EST

It’s sad that Americans see someone who is original, and automatically shy away from them. Not only is Adam an amazing singer, but he performs his songs as well. His eyeliner, nail polish, and crafty outfits just add to his whole look. Take this from a straight, christian, conservative, Adam should have won.

7 | 6/29/2009, 3:43 pm EST

Kris and Adam had lots of talent.
However Adam was definitly the stronger and a much better vocalist. Kris was meant to be on a show like that. A show where he can preform for an audience and show what he has. But Adam used it as a platform. He was meant to be an artist. He is in a legue of his own and will be around for a much longer time than kris. This Guy has Raw unsurpassed talent.

Susan | 6/30/2009, 11:15 pm EST

Adam will ultimately win his own well-deserved place in the line-up of innovative and influential stars. I wanted him to win idol, because he deserved it. I voted for him (usually several times) every week except the last week. Sadly, I really believe that some technology was used to program votes for Kris and block other phone calls. I called numerous times over four hours and never once got through once. Idol needs to update their phone technology. Other shows limit the number of votes per phone number. What’s the point of claiming 80 million votes if they are all from the same 20,000 people – or from a few computers?

That aside, I am really looking forward to Adam’s future artistry and will take every opportunity to see him on stage and on DVD as well as listen to his newly published songs.

I am close to retirement age and am totally thrilled to see this kind of emerging talent. I have a feeling we ain’t seen nothin’ yet!

NA | 7/1/2009, 8:50 am EST

ok… dude, did anyone not get really really really annoyed with kris allen’s whole, “innocent lost puppy dog” look, he would give while he was being critiqued by the judges? it was so incredibly annoying to me! he would purse and lick his lips, and look at the camera as if to say “please vote for me! i really need this!”
it felt like a hugely unconfident, nervous, insecure persona he would put off. not something i want to see in america’s next big “star”. i never could get over it.
-the weird thing is, i’ve waited and waited for someone else to point that out, but no one ever did. which is exactly why i’m posting this comment… someone needs to.

Colette | 7/1/2009, 9:29 am EST

Adam didn’t win because the vote was “fixed”, by the state of Arkansas along with ATT. Also, the college kids, blocking Adam’s lines with their computer voting things. For 3 hours, the majority of Adam’s voters could not get in more than 5-6 votes due to constant busy signals. They (all of the above) were so effective in blocking Adam’s votes, I am surprised the vote count wasn’t 300 million for Kris and 50 thousand for Adam. Such a farce. It is evident who is the most talented and will continue to be evident as Adam’s career grows. Adam is a worldwide phenomenon already and he has only just barely begun.

cef | 7/1/2009, 1:19 pm EST

Of course Adam should have won if American Idol was based soley on talent. However there are many intangibles involved that skewed the voting towards the middle of the road which is where Kris lives.
I sensed that Kris would win prior to the finale and watched that portion of the show between the fingers of my hands that were pressed against my face in complete disbelief and disappointment. The voting system definitely needs to be revamped in light of the results of Season 8 if AI wants to maintain any semblance of legitimacy. You rock Adam and I will see you on July 17th in Ontario, California. Can’t wait to see the legitimate, honest to goodness, all bs aside…American Idol!

Amy | 7/2/2009, 9:52 pm EST

Kris was strong all season…how can you say that I didn’t even know he was on stage or around till the end with Adam….I do not dilike kris singing but he is not a strong singer or even good…

culture clown | 7/5/2009, 9:12 pm EST

Kriss Allen qwon, Adam did not lose. He won fair nd square as he was a safer choice and appealed to the teens and tweens. the fans that adam appealed to by ion large were over 25 years old. but the younger crowd is the ione who carries most idol voting. No doubt Adam will sell mre records than Kris in the long run so it really doesnt matter. And what ever happened to that Ruben Idol. How many records did he sell for his 1 million dollar contract? Where will he hang it up. its not necesarry to become a star by being the winner. in fact i think Adam was blessed to be the runner up. Just the controversy alone will sell records.

No one will read this as it’s many months late, but in the name of Berkeley I feel the need to post.

Look at how Kris’s single’s doing. He won because of Arkansas, and because of fear. Those votes were not enough to get him even respectable sales when his single got released.

Adam won this thing. Kris lost.

Toni | 10/15/2009, 11:42 am EST

Hi Stella, I read it:} This is an “old” board, but it’s interesting how we Glamberts knew all along that it just didn’t matter. Adam said the same thing over and over. We knew he was a star from the begging and when his CD goes gold in 4 weeks, everyone will know Adam Lambert. Kris won because of the Arkansas voting and the Danny votes too. Even with that, I’m sure it was close. AI is history..when he performs at the AMA, the whole world will be blown away:}

Anonymous | 11/16/2009, 10:14 am EST

Most importantly, as a foreigner, I don’t understsand what’s so controversial about Adam. I’ve always thought that my country is far poorer and far more conservative than America. But in my state, we don’t KILL a genius simply because he is honest about his sexuality and he wears nail polish or he loves laughing innocently so much or he can maintain such a nice character while being superiorly talented? In my country, we are growing more and more used to unique personas.
For me, it’s not just Adam’s losing on the show. It’s the breaking of the American Dream Bubble.
