Eminem’s “Relapse” Expected To Set 2009 Sales Record

Early sales estimates predict Eminem’s Relapse will capture his fifth consecutive Number One on the charts next week with an astounding — for this economy, anyway — 650,000 copies sold. Even if Relapse merely surpasses 600K, the album will easily be the bestselling for a debuting album this year, and the highest sales week since AC/DC moved 784,000 copies of Black Ice in October 2008, Billboard.biz reports.

Of Em’s six officially released albums (we’re not counting the unearthed Infinite) only his debut album The Slim Shady LP failed to reach the top spot, settling for Number Two in 1999. But his five consequent albums all reached Number One, a feat that Marshall Mathers will likely accomplish for a sixth consecutive time when his Relapse 2 is released later this year. Additionally, Eminem’s Curtain Call: The Hits and the 8 Mile soundtrack also reached Number One.

Even though Relapse’s expected sales numbers are impressive, they don’t come close to the 711,000 copies 2004’s Encore sold in a truncated sales week after the release date was pushed up four days to combat that album’s leak. Relapse also isn’t within the same ballpark of the 1.76 million copies The Marshall Mathers LP sold in the pre-leak/pre-recession days of May 2000. According to Billboard.biz, Em’s last five albums alone have combined for roughly 33.3 million in sales just in the United States, making the rapper the bestselling artist in hip-hop. As part of the heavy promotion surrounding Relapse, the rapper hosted an album release party in Detroit on May 19th, and two songs from the performance will air on Jimmy Kimmel Live! tomorrow night.

i heard the album already its not that great, it feels dated, lookin for dre’s album to drop

Mark | 5/21/2009, 1:59 pm EST

Quite impressive considering the economy and the music industry as a whole. I think it will be closer to a million in its first week. The album is excellent and is what rap needed badly. Anyone who doesnt like usally never liked Eminem in the first place.

Will | 5/21/2009, 2:48 pm EST

I loved Eminens old stuff like the album the eminem show and some other stuff. But this album is POP shit. This isn’t the awesome, in your face rap eminem gave us for so long this album sounds more like beonce don’t buy it. I had high hopes for this but it is barely deserving of one star. Everyone should buy Green Day’s new album it is so much better and so amazing it’s without a doubt the best album of the year.

nikole | 5/21/2009, 2:52 pm EST

i wouldnt be surprised if the cd hit one mil, the cd is ROCKIN. anyone who says its not great does not know eminem or hiphop for that matter. hes genuis, the lyrics are off teh chart, the beats or smokin hott. if relapse 2 is better i may pee myself.

Adam | 5/21/2009, 2:53 pm EST

I got the privledge of hearing the album a few weeks before the drop. I had 2 weeks to listen and still went out and bought the CD at release. I am now pushing 3 weeks of nothing but this album. It is damn good. Beautiful is one of the best songs I have heard in a long time. Right there with TI’s Dead and Gone.

Remember, Encore sold more in week 2 than in it’s first week.

Adam | 5/21/2009, 2:54 pm EST

I’m with you Nikole. I laugh when I think about Rick Ross saying he would outsell Em.

Josh | 5/21/2009, 2:55 pm EST

“Relapse” is a classic. People cry and whine so much. His flow is incredible on this album. It has every element from he previous albums all in one. From the craziness of “Slim Shady lp”, to the story telling on ”Marshall Mather lp” to the personal stuff on “The Eminem show” to the experimantation of different voice tones and accents (which open up whole new rhyme schemes by the way) of “Encore”. It’s his first concept album and is also a great concept. I hope it hits 1 million in the first week. I would love for it to beat out that candy ass bullsh**t Lil Wayne put out. “Relapse” is real hip hop!

Sorry Em... | 5/21/2009, 3:10 pm EST

New album…

Same old burns on celebrities, you are crazy- we get it… You like drugs- we get it. Beats are weak- Kinda shocked by that…

Meh. I pass on this record.

P-eZY | 5/21/2009, 3:14 pm EST

aye Will..your just one of the dudes that loves to be picky for no fuckin reason..lol…Eminem is clearly delivering on this album..i think its one of his best..his flow is unmatched and his rhyme scheme is art in motion. FUCK those who down this album…this is the shit

mig | 5/21/2009, 3:25 pm EST

it’s waaaaaaay better than the state of rap today(stanky leg????)it’s a must have cd.much better than bustas latest effort,which i bought the same day.

Yung J | 5/21/2009, 3:40 pm EST

Will you need to get outta here bro relapse is hella good and relapse 2 will be better underground is the best song on the album love the way he attacks the beat

TITO | 5/21/2009, 3:40 pm EST

I WAS DISAPPOINTED WITH THIS ALBUM I EXPECTED HIM TO COME WITH SERIOUS STATEMENTS REGARDING POLITICS AND OUR ECONOMY AND SOME OF HIS ISSUES THATS BEEN KEEPING HIM AWAY FROM THE GAME.HE PRODUCE A ALBUM THATS A JOKE HE CAME OUT WITH THESE STUPID ASS VOICES N SILLY MELODIES.THIS ALBUM NEEDED TO BE SERIOUS.HE NEEDED TO SET THE STANDARD HIGH FOR THE FUTURE OF HIP HOP.OVERALL ALBUM IS A FLOP

Hey | 5/21/2009, 3:45 pm EST

sorry em. . . . get out of here with that go listen to ur lil soulja boy records punk. he had a drug addiction we know dat but he’s off now an his record hit the streets hard real hard any 1 that says relapse is weak needa go listen to your lil soulja boy stanky leg bs ONE

Ken | 5/21/2009, 3:46 pm EST

This album is FIRE!! If you’re a true fan of hip hop buy this album. Em’s lyrical delivery is untouched (White boy is top 5 dead or alive and shows why), the album is dark and reflects on his addiction during the years he was gone, there’s comical tracks but the way he paints the picture with his words is sick and makes you laugh. The more you listen the more it grows on you. For $10 its worth the purchase! If you’re looking for some candy-rap do the Stanky-Leg garbage do not buy, you can find those albums in the Teeny-bop rap section at Best Buy.
Em has re-set the bar on what IS hip hop music, Go get it! Anticipating Relapse 2 based off the bonus tracks of this CD!

nathan fuller | 5/21/2009, 4:21 pm EST

His last two albums were pure shit but Relapse really impressed me. The lyrics are funny and clever and the songs are all round tight.

MajorPayne | 5/21/2009, 5:07 pm EST

Em is the greatest Rapper ever he has nothin else to prove it.
Relapse is a bomb! Eminem has the talent to rap about anything in the world.
I’m Eminem’s biggest fan in Liberia.

Kris | 5/21/2009, 5:17 pm EST

I will say that this album has its good and bad songs….

The beats arent as modern as i expected but thats what dre does haha.

The lyricism is brilliant. The flows are the best iv heard in a long time.

The best tracks imo are DeJaVu, Insane, My Mom, Medicine ball and MY DARLING Bonus song (:

fred | 5/21/2009, 5:30 pm EST

Listen, relapse isn’t the best album ever, but stop bitching please. Eminem is a 36 going on 37 year old man. I think he’s over those imature days of when he was younger. Evern though those were his best albums, he’s too old to be putting out shit like that, its just not gonna sound good. I would have liked this album to be more like “the eminem show” a more mature record, that is good for his old age. although you know that the mmlp, and the sslp were the best he ever made.

Joel | 5/21/2009, 5:39 pm EST

His Lyrics and delivery and untouchable. I can’t believe no one has anything about “stay wide wawake” best song on the album

sean | 5/21/2009, 5:44 pm EST

this album is sick, different songs from different areas and events in his life, from proof’s death up to more upbeat times. R.I.P proof and good luck Em

david | 5/21/2009, 5:55 pm EST

im a real, and big eminem fan, an this album is pure genius!! these critics cant and wont except that he is a lyrical genius and the best rapper alive!! just because he puts a voice on now and then doesnt mean it pop music! good stuff EM

Rik | 5/21/2009, 5:58 pm EST

Don’t really matter what people think!? I personaaly i like it…..i bought it and that’s it ! If Em do great numbers then we gonna have relaspe two sooner and receive great music to listen to. If you’re not happy by the way em rap on it, buy something esle that all . In a couple a month , he will be close to have sold nearly 40 millions copies of his albums worldwide so i guest people like it :P lol

~~~ | 5/21/2009, 6:19 pm EST
YES!!!!!!!!!!!! this so rocks cos the relapse is dope and it deserves to be number 1 AND multi platinum :)
DAN | 5/21/2009, 6:19 pm EST
EM is a lyrical BEAST!!!! Album is fire!!!!!!!!!!!
Bumblehawk | 5/21/2009, 7:12 pm EST
how much did he make world wide?
Sam | 5/21/2009, 7:32 pm EST
Em is a genious, Relapse is a rebirth of his Slim Shady persona, Bringing back the eminem from “The Slim Shady LP” and “The Marshall Mathers LP”—hes spitting lyrical masterpeices on top dre’s dark head thumping beats.
Best Song: Stay Wide Awake
if you a true hip hop head, this is what hip hop needs. Honestly, there isn’t anyone out there that does it how he do. I’m 34 yrs old and been listening to hip hop since the mid 80’s and rap music for the most part is on the decline! this album is a shot of adrenaline in the blood stream no doubt!
no wonder! | 5/21/2009, 7:38 pm EST
With Eminem.co… er, I mean, RollingStone.comm pushing the “music” with all of its might. And thanks for all the excuses you provide for it not selling as well as the others. This from the same magazine that will not let the Monkees in the RnR Hall of Fame… like they are any worse than Eminem… and relatively speaking, they far outsold this “artist.”
Haters | 5/21/2009, 7:52 pm EST
How old are the haters leaving these post? 14, 15? you guys need to keep listening to wak as.s rappers like rick ross, Souja Boy or flo-rida, u kids leave the album buying to the tens of millions of people that have been buying Em’s CDs since 1999.
Shakespeare | 5/21/2009, 7:57 pm EST
Bumblehawk EMINEM to the pre-release of RELAPSE has sold 70 million albums worldwide. I would love to see if Lil Wayne could do that!
Yeah boyes!
chris | 5/21/2009, 8:15 pm EST
there is no one better out there, guess whos back,back again go slim rick ross is good but not even close to what em has done and still putting it down. he will out sell any rapper out there just like pac did because of his brain and the way he lets it flow about life and events. he makes you feel and put yourself there just like pac did. snoop dogg said it the best he is the great white hope!
ren | 5/21/2009, 9:11 pm EST
shut up fred, your not an eminem fan.
Fo sho. | 5/21/2009, 9:35 pm EST
This album is what rap needed right now. I will be straight honest with you…95% of rap out there today is garbage. I kinda makes me wonder what these cats where listening to (definately not tupac/biggie). Eminem is the best out. No competition. Its like Shawn Bradley trying to hoop with Michael Jordan. As for political comments…stay tuned (Relapse 2).
TheCoz | 5/21/2009, 9:58 pm EST
Where are the songs bashing the Jonas Brothers and American Idol? South Park has become 100x better at mocking pop culture than Eminem. Hopefully “We Made You” is the only song of that ilk that made the album.
His Prince Michael | 5/21/2009, 10:26 pm EST
Wow, all these “great” comments?
Brought to you by the suckas from
Aftermath Records and R.I.A.A.
Act, like ya don’t know, fakers.
Jack | 5/21/2009, 10:45 pm EST
I think they forgot about Lil’ Wayne who only sold 1 million 53 thousand copies in one week and sold as many copies in one day that eminem did in a week..but you know…w.e
bob | 5/21/2009, 10:46 pm EST
Fantastic album, im only 13, but im a huge eminem fan, and I’ve heard all his previous work, relapse has crazy sick rhymes and rhythms, amazing
Crill | 5/22/2009, 12:43 am EST
Slim is the best rapper not only alive but ever. Period. He has been since the eminem show. No one can tell a story with such lyrical content like this motherfucker. Its what every rapper before him had tried to do. Even Biggie would say his shit is dull compared to Slims. Hes so aware of everything around him and he always touches on it in the illest way fuckin possible, It seems like he always says the perfect rhyme. If you dont feel the same i feel sorry for you cuz that means your not getting it. Thank you for returning King Marshall, the game was hurtin.
Westcoast OG | 5/22/2009, 2:14 am EST
Fuck lil Wayne and rick Ross who bumps rick Ross fake ass wanna be mafia related clown that fool will get chin checked real quick out here in the westcoast the best coast !
Westcoast OG | 5/22/2009, 2:34 am EST
Emimem is tight he got’s flow but he’s not the best rapper ! That fools sick wit his flow but I am down wit that underground hip hop and no rapper delivers those metaphores like chino xl or crooked I n let’s not forget Juice took eminem out in a freestyle battle but u lil kids wouldn’t no nothing bout that cause like I said this is underground real hip hop shit and there a lot of I’ll underground rappers with mad flow that eminen couldn’t even touch on some real flow shit I aint hating but iam just putting the truth out there YouTube these rappers than say if emenim gots anything on em if itwasnt for dre this fool wouldve never blew up he’s just a whiteboy wit flow behind dre’s fat beats if dre pushed crooked I like he did shady crooked would be ten times better I don’t hate on eminem he got skills but strongly disagree when people say he’s the best rapper I think these fools need to listen to some underground shit when it comes to some real sick flow eminem isn’t even on chino xl’s level and real hip hop heads will tell you that!
Will | 5/22/2009, 3:31 am EST
The relapse is the best cd thats come out in a long time period not just for rap but for music itself. The best songs are stay wide awake, insane, medicine ball and underground i cant wait for relapse 2.
oats | 5/22/2009, 4:49 am EST
Yup guess who’s back, Eminem is back so it be interesting if he disses anyone in the future because eminems quite clever, he just picks on anyone without actually having a reason and you can’t diss eminem, only person who can diss eminem is eminem
sh4dy4lif3 | 5/22/2009, 4:53 am EST
time to hate shady again his bak hey will shut ur bloodcloth mouth ngo to listen to ur 21 breakdown cuz em’s rap iz always n will remain z best fuk other rappers who thinks em a monkey
KT Mutha Fkn G | 5/22/2009, 6:35 am EST
Well overall the albums concept has taken us back to his original persona back with the slim shady lp its good to see eminem transfer his troubled life to music and you can bump it all day long
Anonymous | 5/22/2009, 8:33 am EST
jack…wayne isnt the fastest selling rapper..eminem is with marshal mathers LP
and lil wayne;s carter 3 was pre-recession…i know the exact facts
Wes M. | 5/22/2009, 10:31 am EST
If you are 13 years old, you will love this record.
Alex | 5/22/2009, 10:42 am EST
He might be the most successful and even best rapper on Earth, but he’s not the greatest and most successful singer out there. The thing is he keeps on making fun of other artists, but in the end it’s them who make fun of him by outselling him by far. Only one artist on Earth has managed to sell a record-breaking 85 million records in the 1998-2009 period (the last decade) and it’s not Eminem. What’s more, all this mocking and dissing other people is getting a little boring and astonishingly unoriginal… Especially since it’s the bulk of his material, which means that if he didn’t do that, he would have nothing to sing about and make no records…
Anyway, projections are often wrong. Oddly enough, when those people shoot high, final sales end up being much lower, when they shoot low, they end up being higher. Let’s wait and see before commenting on numbers.
h_e_n_r_y | 5/22/2009, 11:06 am EST
God, these comments are hilarious in every way…
bdizzle1211 | 5/22/2009, 11:15 am EST
I hate pop culture music, but there’s no doubt I’ll be buying this one. He’s original and he is one of the best “artists” in the main stream. As is Wayne. I think he’ll surprise some people with his numbers on this album because it has been long awaited and not only will many of his old fans buy this but there will be a new generation purchasing this album.
If your not a real fan of hip hop you shouldn’t be commenting on anything, for one em is a genius no matter what. This album my not be a classic, but its a dope record that hip hop needed. He is a beast on the mic, his flow is ridiculous. N if people werent’ downloading his stuff early cuz they know its hot, then he would have out sold tha carter 3 in a week, i like wayne too, but if u compare these albums to hip hop em’s is way better cuz he actually talked about something.
Em is honestly the best rapper alive right now, n relapse 2 will be more serious. stop hating n give this man his props. Dont’ be scared to say at white man is the best in rap. N i’m black
Whats up with all this “best” crap? Even Em says he just wants to be mentioned in the same category as the greats not be “the best”. jay, bigs, em, nas are all the best. wayne is on his way but does not deserve to be in the same group yet. Appreciate the talent and stop the BS arguing
kingmathers | 5/22/2009, 1:23 pm EST
eminem is the greatest rapper sorry haters but his record
sales prove it all that he is
Haters Galore | 5/22/2009, 1:24 pm EST
First off… anyone saying the beats are weak is either deaf or dumb. Are you Kidding?
This is Em at his best. If you don’t like this then you have no business listening to him. As with all album you have to give them a month or so before deciding where they rank amongst others but as of right now I am ready to crown this Em’s best album. Look out for Relapse 2 to have some features (D12, T.I., Hova, Stat Quo)and a comeplete different theme. What’s up to the supporters and go away to the haters.
kingmathers | 5/22/2009, 1:33 pm EST
the relaspe was ok and coming from the true the true eminem fan that i am i perdict relaspe2 to be even better because eminem already stated that hes just warming up and that relaspe 2 is more for the ears
snikers | 5/22/2009, 1:42 pm EST
this album is really great. Im 20 and listened to eminem for a long time. The lyrics in all the songs are amazing!
deano | 5/22/2009, 1:55 pm EST
Guess who’s back? Despite everyone’s seemingly divergent tastes in this thread, we all have to admit that today’s sad music world needs stars and personalities like Em to shake things up. Who would you rather see selling tons of CDs, the latest AI hack?
Nick | 5/22/2009, 2:34 pm EST
I’m surprised this album did so well. Anybody bagging on it for “only” doing over 600,000 isn’t paying attention to the music industry.
Relapse was leaked to the internet 2 or 3 weeks before the release date which murders most albums sales. Plus Eminem has a young fanbase and they stopped buying music (if they ever did) around 2002. AC/DC on the other hand has a significantly older fanbase, since they’ve been around since the 70s and usually people over 30 don’t download illegally. So I wasn’t surprised when they did big numbers (or The Eagles also doing over 700,000 before them.) But any artist with the same age group of Eminem fans doing big is damn near a miracle in 2009.
The days of artists going “Diamond” died forever in 2001, but if this sells 4 or 5 million that is cause for celebration. I’m sure his record label popped the champagne for the first time in years.
Derik | 5/22/2009, 3:36 pm EST
Perfectly said there Nick.
kingmathers | 5/22/2009, 3:53 pm EST
the relaspe album is perdicted to sell 4 million 55 thousand copies i bought it and look for relaspe 2 to sell even more numbers
But either way, im buying it this weekend.
So who is it? Britney? She’s the only one whose sales are even close to Eminem for that period according to estimates I’ve read. Maybe she’s sold more records worldwide than he has by now, but not vastly more.
I don’t believe for a minute that sales alone are a measure of true artistic merit, whatever that even is, but to claim that any contemporary artist has vastly outsold Eminem in the past decade is simply fallacious. And if you’re going to put up a statistic, please include a source.
Dan | 5/22/2009, 6:14 pm EST
I don’t understand how he has six albums that hit #1, not including Infinite, Curtain Call, or the 8 Mile Soundtrack. You aren’t counting The Re-Up, are you? Because that’s not really an Eminem studio album, nor did it hit #1 on the charts.
Ok, Will for one you call this pop wtf? are you kidding me? do you know what pop music is? dont knowknow why i asked that cause its obvious you dont. God forbid eminem goes with what works for him. Unlike the south rap that revolves sells more in ringtones then it does in albums.
Secondly Tito since when did he ever come with politcal records? Yeah lets knock eminem who has his first album in 3 yrs while others are pumping albums out like every other month dont see anyone jumping on them for not being “political”.
Lato649 | 5/22/2009, 9:00 pm EST
Eminem is a phenomenal rapper, and ARGUABLY the best out there right now, but you people need to realize record sales don’t mean a person is a great artist AT ALL. Britney Spears sells records by the truckload… and she’s terrible. Rap is nearly dead as it is, so for Eminem to sell his last record as well as he did WITH a leak, is fantastic. But again, record sales don’t mean a thing, and that isn’t where artists make their money anyway. It’s in touring. Being a great live act is how you pick out the great artists. WITHOUT Special effects… dancers, and pyro. Just the artist and their music.
Valeria | 5/22/2009, 9:33 pm EST
this album is really great! i love how eminem does his thing, is the best….
Tree | 5/23/2009, 12:10 am EST
Eminem is one of the most talented artists of recent time, but i have to say the accent he uses on all the songs kills this record. His lyrics are still great, and really catchy, proving he still has all the talent, but with the accent on every song it brings this album way down. If he re-recorded each song with his real voice this would easily be up there with his previous, classic albums.
Anonymous | 5/23/2009, 12:28 am EST
Does this really matter? The Beatles are way better.
4.5 stars! | 5/23/2009, 5:06 am EST
Even if this is not Eminem’s best album ever… (Which it’s not) It’s still very good! I think it was meant to be a double album like Tupac or Biggie’s album. But with the bad economy and the way music is sold and stole…. They release only one at a time. Which right now is the better way to go. Imagine if he did release the double album??? I think we would have to start talking about one of the best EVER! Not just one of the best alive! Think about it!
This album is very good! I say it’s 4.5 stars out of 5.
Every album has it’s filler songs… and to me this does’nt have many. But change 2 or 3 songs on this album… and it would be a classic!
I really think Relapse 2 or whatever they are going to call it… WILL be even better! Cant wait. -Steve
LoserBaby | 5/23/2009, 10:05 am EST
He peaked on Marshall Mathers LP. Every song on that album is a gem. Happens to everyone though. Every artist has there peak album. This album is ok but it’s not very listenable. atleast not to me.
Piro | 5/23/2009, 11:35 am EST
Its hilarious how people say waynes one mill and all this b.s…did u guys forget that mmlp sold 1.7 mill in a week eminem show sold 1.3 mil and encore sold 700k in 4 days and 900k second week…this album is good best since t.i…its wut hiphop needed..relapse 2 come out soon
mitch | 5/23/2009, 12:02 pm EST
so sick of eminem, this album is overrated as hell. ugk – 4 life is probably the best hip hop album of the year, unless the new clipse is better. new cam’ron is way better than this too.
wills wrong | 5/23/2009, 12:46 pm EST
WILL? did you really just say EM new album is to much pop? cuz i highly doubt u listened to the record…its practically the oposite of pop theres not many songs that could be on the radio and alot f’ed up ish that ur ears prolly couldnt even handle
Mladen | 5/23/2009, 2:58 pm EST
Relapse isn’t about how many hits can hit the radio station. I’m glad Em is back, and the beats by Dre are still amazing.
This is what rap needed, everything on the radio is pathetic. This is for hoping rap can go back to the way it once was.
Bradhole | 5/24/2009, 6:09 am EST
The album is kinda garbage. Too much like Encore. Rappin’ in that stupid accent or whatever. WTF is that about? 2/5
Brad | 5/24/2009, 6:13 am EST
Very disappointing. He needs to rap like he used to and not in that retarded voice.
RMP | 5/24/2009, 11:26 am EST
a yo haters if you are a true fan of ems music you would of been buying his cd’s since 96′ way back to the infinite album but your right alot of people underestimating my nigga em but he’s back and lil wayne isn’t going to be on top in the game for a while
em’s new lyrics are so sick on this lp i love it this nigga em has lost his mind but this is what detroit has been waiting for
go buy this album it’s ridiculously insane
can’t forget
R.I.P PROOF
Greg aka DB6 | 5/24/2009, 11:38 am EST
Hey all of you people who said eminem album suck! Should shut the hell up. You guys fail to realized apart from his drug addiction his BEST friend was shot. As you can see he is in a bad place, y’all should be happy he decided to blest this wack rap economy with his lyrics. I purchase the album one of the best I ever herd. He did what he always do. 1. Freak you out, 2. Make you laugh and 3. Make you sad. I gave this album a 9.9 out of 10 simply because I think his fourth track insane was too much. Apart from that, that’s one of the best rap album all year. Eminem is a lyrics god. Listen to beautiful that’s one of his best he was in a dark place cut him some slack. Eminem is the best rapper alive, I swear if pac and biggie was alive he could give them a run for their money.
IrishSarcasm | 5/24/2009, 12:12 pm EST
Hey folks, in all honesty, I am really sick and tired of the bullshit antics that try to bring Marshall Mathers down. The man is the best selling rap artist in US history, and COME THE FUCK ON… Are we going to say that Aerosmith’s older albums make their newer ones deserve a shitty score? Fuck no. Talented and successful artists make their living by being talented. Eminem’s new CD may be unique from his early days, but there’s not a fucking chance in hell that you can tell me that his poly-syllable rhyme deliver has changed at all. Who cares if he uses accents. It’s his choice. If you’re a true fan to his origin, then you won’t hate on the guy simply for using Slim Shady for an album before he ramps up to the deliver of his second LP to be released later. Slim Shady is a funny, lyrically-complex, but true emcee. If you love Marshall, then you’ll love this album. If not, then go listen to Lil’ Wayne. Atleast Marshall has some fucking sense and intellect that relates.
Frozen 1 | 5/24/2009, 12:18 pm EST
Look either you like it or you dont. For me I love it. Absolutely outstanding work again by EM. Im the type that normally has to listen to an album a dozen time to get a real feel for it. There 5 songs on Relapse that really pop and the others i really do like. Just have to get to know where hes going with each song.
Anonymous | 5/24/2009, 12:59 pm EST
Eminem is back
washed-up | 5/24/2009, 2:32 pm EST
Come on people. I am going to make a solid bet that the average age of most these people leaving comments is about 19. This guy is complete crap. He was funny on his first album at least. Now he is just a disgrace to humanity in general. I seriously believe one has to be intellectually impoverished to perceive this man as talent. Instrumentally it is shit. He always dwells on some crass facet of life with the utmost vulgarity. Yeah he may have a point here and there, but about just as much as you would exhibit from a transient beggar at an intersection. Idols like this are a prime example of a factor in why are country is composed of so many under educated kids.
brandon | 5/24/2009, 3:06 pm EST
eminems album relaspe is ok i like it alot better then the flop and boring carter3 album thats rapping about nothing
Krazey Charles | 5/24/2009, 3:10 pm EST
This Album is great, the more you listen to it, the more it grows on you. I agree Insane is well.. insane but that is what Em does he makes you uncomfortable, makes you laugh and if you really listen to his lyrics, You are forced to admit your listening to the best rapper alive.
STAY WIDE AWAKE, my fav song on the album, he’s SICK!!
K.C. | 5/24/2009, 5:27 pm EST
I would say it’s better than Encore, but not as good as his first three. It’s one of those albums you have to listen to a couple of times to get the real feel of it. Tracks 3, 5, 17, 18, 19 and 6 are all really well done.
If I had to rank his albums (and no I don’t count the Re-Up), it would go like this:
1. Marshall Mathers LP – 9.5/10
2. Eminem Show – 9/10
3. Slim Shady LP – 8.5/10
4. Relapse – 7.5/10
5. Encore – 6.5/10
The best rapper alive … still.
washed-up is an idiot | 5/24/2009, 5:40 pm EST
I’m not going to defend everything Eminem does. I feel he dumbs himself down way too much on Relapse (although not as much as on Encore) and would love for him to mature a little more. He’s coming up to on 40 and IMO needs to stop rehashing the same murder-songs and celebrity jokes routine. I was hoping he’d go more for social commentary.
But he’s one of the best lyricists in contemporary music. Granted, that’s not saying much of anything this decade, but he has been critically acclaimed his entire career by a group of people far older than the teenagers you believe Eminem fans are. Is he making an entire album of Bob Dylan-esque social commentaries? No, but he’s still tremendous. By far the greatest rapper of his generation with a strong argument in favor of being the greatest rapper ever. But I’ll take it you’re a “rock snob” stuck in a “rap is crap!” mentality that was discredited as foolish sometime in the 1980s. So none of that matters to you.
Now the only question is, why did Rolling Stone choose to give Green Day their cover this month instead of Eminem? I think the people have spoken that Green Day put out a really pretentious and mediocre record not worth talking about. But Eminem released a record that has gotten more people excited about music again than any in recent history.
JB | 5/24/2009, 9:48 pm EST
No lie i like Em and dis CD is da shit but DIS FUCKN CD IS FUCKED UP heres some examples: bein raped by his dad his mom makn him take pills him rapn people AND WHY THA FUCK DOES HE KEEP TALKN BOUT FUCKN HANNAH MONTANA SHE’S A FUCK TEENAGER. all in all its a good cd but dont let little kids here it it will give them nightmares
Classic Rock is the Best | 5/25/2009, 1:17 am EST
Eminems best album and also a masterpiece was the Marshall Mathers LP.
Eminem had some hits after that CD but no way he could ever do better than that CD.
From the year 2000 to 2010 there hasn’t been any good music at all. Eminem was one of the handful of people who came out with something decent.
Music was best from the 1930’s to the 1990’s. Real music started vanishing in the mid to late 1990’s
I am so sick of all the emo queers and rap queers on mtv.
long live CLASSIC ROCK!!
andrew` | 5/25/2009, 2:12 am EST
OMG at the person below me’s comment. I do not have any affliction with Eminem other than being a huge fan in 1999 when the Slim Shady LP came out. I would like to say though, for the record, your comment makes his fans look idiotic and juvenile at best. Try using grammar above the 6th grade text message level and then try posting a message about how great your favorite artist is. Again, no beef with Eminem, but try to at least be coherent when telling others about how dumb they are.
josh | 5/25/2009, 3:13 am EST
Ok for me Relapse is incredible! I can’t even decide which songs are my favorites. They all have very unique characteristics and contain a great variety of moods and the way he lyrically presents the songs enables you to put yourself in the situation he is describing. I like all of his music from the time of his underground stuff like Crackers and Cheese (very rare from 93) and (Biterphobia also very rare from 93) all the way until now. It is difficult for me to rate his music because all of his material is different and keeps you entertained. I enjoy all of his music. Each time I listen to Relapse I enjoy it even more.
Peace!
T $ | 5/25/2009, 3:21 am EST
“only uneducated 19 year olds could find this entertaining”
Im 19, in college, and i liked the album, some people are full of shit
I’d ditch a few tracks on the album, then itd be better
id get rid of
-hello
-same song n dance
put medicine ball after bagpipes, tonya before stay wide awake, careful what u wish for after beautiful, toss paul at the end of the album…
that how i set it up on my playlist, i like it better, but thats just me
4 1/2 out 5
And honestly do you really think doctor dre rap legend mr. nwa would have humiliated himself by bringing in a little white boy from detroit who wouldn’t be able to run circles around any rapper alive;]
fuck all u haters we dont wna hear ur bullshit…em is incredible, best rapper alive still an his flow is sick. relapse is amazing hoping relapse 2 will be jus as good. to ppl saying lil wayne the best rapper alive- no, hes the most overrated rapper alive. hed be a better artist if he shat on a canvas tbh
Pink Durs | 5/25/2009, 10:52 am EST
EM-U-NEM!! EM-U-NEM!! EM-U-NEM!! Actually, for those who have posted their own ratings and put Encore way down low, I fucken loved that album. I’ve only listened to Relapse once or twice, but I bought it ’cause Em’s one of the only people in music I feel like supporting no matter what. I have no idea how this album will end up sounding to me in a week, but it sounds pretty damn good right now and Encore’s sick — awesome album, awesome, awesome, awesome!! Gets better with age. That fucken puppet dog KILLS me!!!
djandy | 5/25/2009, 12:27 pm EST
Personally I’m not a big eminem fan but as a dj people like him so I play his music. The album is very good though compared to some of his work.
it's bigger than auto-tune | 5/25/2009, 12:29 pm EST
Relapse is the closest thing to REAL hip hop that has gotten lime light in a minute. I am not saying real hip hop in the stuck up “music snob” esteem becuz i love Good pop like most do.
But if you’re into lyricism you have to be into Em. He says off color things becuz thats what Slim Shady is about. But his cadence,timing,and word play on this album is unlike anything in mainstream music right now.(listen to “underground”-last track)
If anything this album and his next will show young aspiring emcee’s how to spit and not just moan into a studio plug in.(listen to any rapper u hate)
This man spit with Jay z years before wayne did(renegade).He has songs with Redman. he’s a legendary emcee and deserves props.
lids | 5/25/2009, 12:42 pm EST
haha agree with jaemie all the way
eminemfan | 5/25/2009, 1:42 pm EST
TITO, thats what makes eminem unique…he isn’t serious, he isn’t logic’, he doesn’t give a fuck (at least most of the times). if u dont like him being funny then u should stop listening, not he should stop acing funny. And WESTCOAST OG, i like those underground artists, but i believe eminem can beat them in a freestyle battle, have u ever heard Eminem freestyle??
Samir | 5/26/2009, 12:04 am EST
You also have to take into account the number of copies that are being downloaded.
Time’s have changed since 2000 and it’s easier than ever now to download an album. Em may have had more sales with his other albums but i’ll bet that none came close to the number of illegal downloads that Relapse has. It’s a damn shame, he deserves the sales, people should be buying his album, it’s amazing!
DM | 5/26/2009, 2:46 am EST
Relapse was disappointing in my opinion and I am probably as big of Eminem fan as there is. He’s my favorite rapper and I have heard everything he’s ever made, underground or with Dre. The 1 reason I liked his work was because he talked about things that no one wanted to talk about. He always pushed one step ahead of everyone else. And as crazy as he sounded he songs were always to the point and sent a message. This album even though it was fun to listen to seemed really random. It feels like he ran out of things to talk about and is just recycling his old work now.
thedetoxg | 5/26/2009, 8:22 am EST
relapse is the shitt!!!!!! hands down, all his albums are very very good but this one lived up to what i thought it would be. my mom when i first heard made me buggg outtt
stan | 5/26/2009, 3:04 pm EST
here we go with the im dissapointed with em just shut the fuck up already the guy has been out the game for four years its either that or kangay n i still think he kicks ass and relapse is the shit
Harless | 5/26/2009, 3:26 pm EST
Eminem is an amazing rapper relapse is bringing Shady back any true eminem fan would love it and not compare it to his others but judge it alone listen to the last song Underground you can’t say that song isnt sick it’s a very good album
ZACH THE FLY MACK | 5/26/2009, 7:09 pm EST
Wow this shit is stupid. if people don’t want to say something good about relapse then don’t leave a comment… anyways its a really good album. I like how he went back to his old roots and made this one like his older albums. I consider all eminem cds amazing though so I might be a little biased.
T$ is a bitch | 5/26/2009, 7:16 pm EST
what an idiot you are. take off same old song and dance and hello? wtf? those are 2 of the best songs on the whole cd. here’s a line that is sick from hello-”you see that chick at the gym checkin me out/any second im bout to stick her neck in my mouth”
bijan from TENN | 5/26/2009, 7:29 pm EST
I hadn’t bought an em CD since encore because I felt he had become too politically correct, and lost his touch, when I heard this was coming out I looked for a used copy and had decided if I would waste my money it would be on a used cheap one, to my amazement, despite the buzz, I found one! Whoever sold it to the store must have been really hard up, its his best album! From the artwork to the fact you can read a long with his lyrics (an obvious suggestion by dre) to the music and timeless beats, and loops, perfect drug CD, makes me miss my pill poppin days! I don’t care what you people say I give it *****!!!!!!
chris | 5/26/2009, 11:25 pm EST
Relapse is one of Em’s best albums YET. The guy is a genius, although I wouldn’t call him the best rapper ever. He’s close to that level with Big and Pac though.
Darven | 5/27/2009, 12:54 am EST
Ok I like Eminem I think he is a great artists and his numbers speak for themself. But whoever wrote this should of did a little more reasearch before writing it. Because didn’t Lil Wayne’s – The Carter III album realeased on June 10, 2008 sell over a million copies his first week?
Matt | 5/27/2009, 8:22 am EST
I always suspected lil wayne’s fans couldn’t read – 2009 SALES RECORD
KMA | 5/27/2009, 12:41 pm EST
lil wayne fans can’t read and clearly they can’t spell either (e.g. ’should of’ vs. ’should have’, ‘great artists’ vs. ‘great artist’, etc.)
Tito(NY) | 5/27/2009, 2:41 pm EST
Yo, 100% word born, eminem is garbage. His freestyles are wack. There’s another Tito on here, and somebody responded to him, that perhaps he should stop listening to eminem. Perhaps eminem should stop getting played! His music is trash!
ollie8342 | 5/27/2009, 4:21 pm EST
bottom line: eminem would lyricly kill any1 alive in the game. startin with wayne. wanye is garbage . he makes club music n pops pills . ems real. “soon as my flow starts, i compose art like the ghost of mozart?” comon. wayne step ur game up shady aftermath is baccc n its a wrap …. scream @ me
sadambush | 5/28/2009, 7:03 am EST
To all the people complaining about the accent, or stating that em should stick to the same old sound of his older albums, i say no way! I like the new sound I mean come on who wants to hear the same old thing over and over again. A little change is nice and interesting shake things up a bit. The beats are amazing his lyrics, like usual are outstanding and personnaly I think its his most talented album yet. So many good songs on the album, Thanks em for bringing me something to jam with all summer!
As an hip hop artist myself who grew up listening to Eminem I think the album definately means Shady’s come back, although it doesn’t match The Eminem Show this album is meant to be horrorcore basically how he use to freestyle. Ya’ll acting like you forgot D12 is still behind the guy influencing his music. I do feel like he could’ve used more heart felt tracks on the album aside from “Beautiful” but that’s why I’m waiting on Relapse 2. Word on the street is…Eminem’s back.
You dummbies are all reterds. all of you.. no one can spell hear, let alone rite a complete sentance. As soon as I sea a proper literating person who can rite properly, than I mite make a serius coment about EM. Because I no rite now, if I do make a serius coment every one hear will just dis it becuse they think they are smart. Just loving Em doesnt make you smart, it makes you normal. Hating Em makes you even more of a reterd, becuse it proves that you have no sence of anything good. Fighting over why Em is or isnt grate just shows your ignorense! You all need to go back to school and learn to read and rite. Then you can go to bulliten boards like this one and try to conversate with us adults.
Thats all i got to say on this topic.
The relapse album shows that eminem is probably one of the greatest rap artists ever and it also proves that he’s far from washed up he still has the ability to wright music that is relevant and entertaining and if anyone denies that there just jealous. Ive already memorized the whole cd and cannot wait for the relapse 2.
I found your blog while looking for stanky leg stuff, what can I say, I’m a fan. Even though it’s only a fad, I love them GS Boyz :) I hear they’re working on a new single as well… Maybe it’ll be the “stanky arm” lol
Relapse 2 better deliver. I can’t believe Em release this garbage, and I really can’t believe how many of you “fans” eat this sh*t up like it’s good. What’s with the rapping like Ghandi? Where are all the phat beats? Where is the wit Em? Please, bring it back for Relapse 2…
I’ve been an Eminem fan for a very long time. I like Eminem because he’s different, he doesn’t talk about all the money he has or all the women that he can have sex with. He tells stories, rather its fiction or non-fiction, the man is a very good rapper. He’s not a white boy trying to be black, he’s not claiming to be a thug, he’s just having fun, doing what he loves to do and making money for it. No different from Kobe Bryant, or Peyton Manning, he’s just making paper doing what he loves and I will always buy his albums. One of the first to buy it. For a rap/hip-hop artist, 650K in the first week is GREAT. Can’t wait for Relapse 2. I can’t wait until he does some raps with Kanye West, and Lil Wayne. I can’t wait, it’s going to be SICK!
cmon people if you know eminem then you should know that this was not close to what he could do. The best song on it was Uderground, but overall i was dissapointed with this cd. those who claim this cd rules are wrong and only say that because they are comparing it with the crap that lil wayne, jay-z, and other “rappers” are putting out today. and im not hating on eminem, hes my favorite rapper, i like him more than tupac, but i know he could do way better stuff than this cd.
fady | 9/26/2009, 9:36 pm EST
mann em is the best..
relapse isnt the best he ever made..
i think the slim shady lp.martial matherslp.and the eminem show are the best..
but i still think relapse is fucking awsome.:
relapse is good people who say its “pop” are fucking retarded, its his least commercial album yet, its horror-core in fact. not a great album but a good, solid comeback record for eminem.
