Michael Jackson Postpones First O2 Arena “This Is It” Concerts

Michael Jackson has postponed several of the first dates of his “This Is It” run of concerts at London’s O2 Arena, the BBC has learned. Jackson reportedly needs more rehearsal time before starting the 50-concert run, which was originally scheduled to begin on July 8th. The BBC reports the first concert has been pushed back five nights, while three other early-July shows have been postponed until March 2010.

“We wanted to ensure that all of Michael’s fans attending the concerts get the same quality in staging and level of entertainment,” promoters AEG Live said in a statement. “It is AEG Live’s sincere hope that those lucky enough to have purchased tickets will have enough time to change their personal schedules and travel plans if they are coming from outside of London… We understand the inconvenience this may have caused and for this reason we have secured some excellent hotel deals for Michael Jackson fans traveling to London on these rescheduled dates.”

(Look back at Michael Jackson’s tumultuous life and career, in photos.)

“Inconvenience” is an understatement, as thousands of international fans were scheduled to flock to the British capital for the opening concerts of the 50-show run. For those who can’t attend the rescheduled dates, AEG Live is offering full refunds for their tickets, but that doesn’t account for people who bought tickets on the secondary market. Turns out those British bookmakers that bet against Jackson performing on July 8th from the onset were right.

Pessimists will pounce on reports that Jackson has been rehearsing non-stop for the tour, and ask whether five days will make a significant difference in his preparation. Or are there bigger problems — like that Jackson 5 tour lawsuit — and more postponements on the way? Rock Daily will have more on this story as we inch towards the (currently scheduled) opening of the This Is It Run.

Here’s the list of affected dates, per AEG Live:

8th July will take place on 13th July 2009
10th July will be moved to 1st March 2010
12th July will be moved to 3rd March 2010
14th July will be moved to 6th March 2010

What are the over/under odds in Las Vegas on how many shows he will actually perform during this run? 15? 23? 1?

Kim | 5/20/2009, 2:27 pm EST

I can’t believe the idiot has done this, so many people will now have non-refundable hotel and train tickets to cover the cost of. I bet he’s not going to compensate everyone for these is he?

unhappy | 5/20/2009, 2:52 pm EST

lydia | 5/20/2009, 3:00 pm EST

i only hope that michael doesn’t die on stage , he push himself too much. all he need is to do an album , i don’t care about the concert. i can’t afford to see him anyway. i have a big family.

No Respect | 5/20/2009, 3:16 pm EST

My rescheduled date is 2 days after I’m back home in Los Angeles. I refuse to pay $350 in fees to change my flight. This was poor planning on MJ’s part and disrespectful to his fans, especially those coming from other parts of the world.

I don’t appreciate getting an email from Ticketmaster that my July 14th show is postponed til March 2010, due to “production delays”…. when July 13th is happening.

Mrs Michael Jackson | 5/20/2009, 3:48 pm EST

OH MY GOD… WOULD YOU ALL JUST SHUT THE HELL UP!!

THIS IS NOT MICHAELS FALT… HE IS WANTING TO DO NOTHING LESS THAN PUT ON AN AMAZING SHOW FOR YOU!! HE IS NOT GAINING ANY MONEY OR ANYTHING FROM THIS… YOU SHOULD ALL THINK YOURSELVES LUCKY THAT YOU ARE GOING TO ACTUALLY SEE THIS LIVING LEGEND IN PERSON… SO QUIT WHINING THAT YOUVE GOT TO WAIT TIL MARCH OR YOUVE HAD TO PAY FOR ANOTHER HOTEL… MONEY AND TIME SHOULDNT MATTER… IF ONLY YOU WOULD ALL REALISE WHO YOU ARE GOING TO SEE… ITS NOT A CRAPPY BRITNEY SPEARS CONCERT… YOUR GOING TO SEE THE KING OF POP… THE MAN WHO HAS SOLD MORE ALBUMS AND RECORDS THAN ANYONE IN HISTORY.
YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOUR COMMENTS.

I HAVE TO BOOK AND PAY FOR ANOTHER HOTEL AND TRAVEL.. BUT THAT DOESNT EVEN BOTHER ME… AS LONG AS I SEE HIM I DONT CARE HOW MUCH MONEY IT TAKES.

AND AS FOR THIS ARTICLE… ITS NOT TO FIT OTHER REHEARSALS IN… IT IS SO THEY CAN HAVE THE BEST QUALITY EFFECTS AND STAGING AND TO MAKE THIS IS IT THE BEST CONCERT EVER.. WHICH IT WILL BE.. SO STOP TRYING TO MAKE OUT LIKE MICHAEL IS IN BAD HEALTH AND THAT HE ISNT READY FOR IT.. BECAUSE HE IS IN FINE HEALTH… HE HASNT GOT ANY DISEASE OR CANCER APART FROM VITILIGO… AND HE ISNT GOING TO GET SUED BECAUSE HE DIDNT AGREE TO A JACKSON 5 COMEBACK TOUR… IN AN INTERVIEW ABOUT A YEAR OR 2 AGO ONE OF HIS BROTHERS SPECIFICALLY STATED THAT IF A J5 TOUR GOES AHEAD, MICHAEL WILL NOT BE TAKING PART.

SO STOP WHINING PEOPLE AND JUST REALISE WHO IT IS THAT YOUR GOING TO SEE… AND GO RE-BOOK YOUR HOTEL AND TRAVEL AND HAVE THE BEST DAY OF YOUR ENTIRE LIFE!

Anonymous | 5/20/2009, 3:51 pm EST

Im so angry. We have paid for hotel and train tickets and then he cancels our july 14th showing. i knew something would go wrong!! He is stupid!

Disappointed | 5/20/2009, 3:54 pm EST

I think all of us that had purchased tickets knew something like this was on the way…my rescheduled show is also 3 days after I leave back to Canada. And who’s to say that the shows further into the tour won’t run into rescheduling problems down the road?? He must have a group of monkeys managing him….which actually wouldn’t surprise me.

Mikayla | 5/20/2009, 3:55 pm EST

We are GUTTED I have a hotel booked which I paid through the nose for!!!! I had 2 tickets for my daughter and myself to see him who is going to refund my hotel!!!! THIS REALLY IS IT!!!

AB | 5/20/2009, 3:58 pm EST

Besides, it takes time to learn how to sing while wearing a surgical mask and dance while wearing pajamas.

Pity the poor people who think they’re going to see Thriller-era Michael Jackson.

Anonymous | 5/20/2009, 4:07 pm EST

Mrs Michael Jackson,

You see that nice shiny ‘CAPS LOCK’ button on your keyboard? It’s your friend.

jr | 5/20/2009, 4:11 pm EST

cmon, are people really surprised at this??? how long has he been working on his supposed come-back album now? between the money problems and his pill popping, no way will these concerts all happen.

At note to MRS MICHAEL JACKSON | 5/20/2009, 4:17 pm EST

DON’T BE SO QUICK TO TELL US TO SHUT THE HELL UP!!!
WE HAVE A RIGHT TO BE VERY ANGRY
MICHAEL HASN’T EVEN BEEN TURNING UP TO REHEARSALS! AND GET YOUR FACTS RIGHT HE WILL MAKE MILLIONS IF HE EVER DOES DO ANY DATES!!!

Mrs Michael Jackson | 5/20/2009, 4:22 pm EST

That shiny caps lock… got your attention didnt it :)

He will make millions out of the concerts yes… but not out of re scheuling the dates.

He has been re-hearsing.. dont beleive what you read in the newspapers.. surely noones that silly.

My dates have been moved too… and ive lost out on money… but im not mad about it… im upset about losing money… but who cares about money when im seeing MJ… i woas willing to pay over 1000 pounds to see him!

Just wish everyone would realise what there moaning about…. would they rather see and amazing show to its full ability or be the only ones to miss out on a spectacular show because the dates were too early for the effects… ? think about it.

Tony J | 5/20/2009, 4:24 pm EST

Wow
I understand why everyone upset, I would be too. But I think it’s not actually Michael’s fault. I think that everything would go off without a hitch; it wasn’t for the lawsuits by people that want a cut of money that hasn’t been made yet. I know this doesn’t make up for the money spent and the time lost planning. I know everyone wants to be at the first shows, because you think they’ll be the best ones. But actually it the later shows dates and the last dates that will be best. Because there will have been enough time to work out all the kinks and all the bugs, where everything will run like clock work. So for those who have tickets for the postponed shows and have received new dates, you do have right to be upset. I would be PISSED! But know that you’re still the lucky ones for having tickets period. I wish it was me with tickets, but that’s another story. God Bless

Mrs Michael Jackson | 5/20/2009, 4:29 pm EST

Finally someone who agrees with me :)

Anonymous | 5/20/2009, 4:41 pm EST

With all due respect, Mrs. Michael Jackson…

My show was supposed to be on July 14, but is now on March 6.

But July 8th is now on July 13th.

So, he’s performing on July 13th, but July 14th the show is not ready??

Dan | 5/20/2009, 4:45 pm EST

had tickets for 14th july, How can he cancel 3 dates in the first week and then have a show on the 13th? Its all a joke and is really unfair

Anonymous | 5/20/2009, 5:34 pm EST

I guess he didn’t want to ‘bump’ all the VIPs coming to the opening night show.

But still… i think fair should be fair.

They should have postponed the first 3 dates, and show #4 should go ahead on its scheduled date of July 14, as planned.

Bullshit that show #1 gets delay 5 days… but shows 2, 3, and 4, get delayed 8 months!

X | 5/20/2009, 5:46 pm EST

I will defend MJ until I am blue in the face, but every grievance that the concert goers have are 100% justified. Changing international travel accomidations is not something that can be easily taken care of, and if I had a ticket, I would be absolutely fuming.

Even though I am guessing that this was not entirely his decision (if he had anything to do with it), he really can’t take any more blows to his credibility if he wants to make the comeback that we’ve been anticipating.

Sam | 5/20/2009, 5:50 pm EST

I am sooooo upset and very angry… me and my dad we going on the 12th and soooo excited!! Its not fair, we paid £1600 for VIP tickets from ticketmaster.. it was going to be a once in a lifetime night and it has been ruined…. i am gutted.. i feel soo cheated!!!

Xander | 5/20/2009, 5:52 pm EST

Based on the new Press Conference video on Michaeljacksonlive.com, it looks like it wasn’t MJ’s decision.

Mrs Michael Jackson (Quote):-

“I HAVE TO BOOK AND PAY FOR ANOTHER HOTEL AND TRAVEL.. BUT THAT DOESNT EVEN BOTHER ME… AS LONG AS I SEE HIM I DONT CARE HOW MUCH MONEY IT TAKES”

“MONEY AND TIME SHOULDNT MATTER”
(Unquote)

GET A GRIP!!!!!!! You may have an abundance of money and no commitments in life other than worshipping MJ 24/7 but many people have already stretched themselves as far as possible to cover the costs of tickets travel & hotels. What are they supposed to do? Just magic up a whole load of cash to pay for new travel and accommodation costs? I consider myself a big Michael Jackson fan, but someone people (like yourself) just take it to a level of insanity!!

(Quote):
“THIS IS NOT MICHAELS FALT… HE IS WANTING TO DO NOTHING LESS THAN PUT ON AN AMAZING SHOW FOR YOU!! HE IS NOT GAINING ANY MONEY OR ANYTHING FROM THIS… YOU SHOULD ALL THINK YOURSELVES LUCKY THAT YOU ARE GOING TO ACTUALLY SEE THIS LIVING LEGEND IN PERSON… ”
(Unquote)

He is an entertainer. Us fans buy his products. If he sells tickets to a concert he is obliged to honour that commitment and not doing so for the reasons given is unacceptable.

Honestly, it’s people like you who give us Michael fans a bad name for being biased nutters who confuse Michael with the likes of Jesus!!!

J.K. | 5/20/2009, 6:27 pm EST

Something is fishy about all of this.

He’s lost it. He’s been in financial trouble for years now. Don’t you think if he had the ability he would’ve made an album or played some shows by now to pay all the millions he owes? He can’t anymore, that’s why he hasn’t done it much earlier. You think he was just taking an extended vacation?

He’s mentally ill.

heather | 5/20/2009, 6:45 pm EST

im sorry but this is an absolute joke! i booked the 12th july because it was one of his first dates and it was on a weekend, so i didn’t have to take a day off work but now to put it right back until march, which he probably won’t even make it that far. and as for some petty excuse about them not being ready well thats just stupid. they could of at least postponed them for a couple months not nearly a year, think i will be getting my money back, as there is no way he will be able to make all shows to march next year!

Jason | 5/20/2009, 7:11 pm EST

Mrk | 5/20/2009, 9:19 pm EST

what an idiot!!!!

rf | 5/20/2009, 9:24 pm EST

woah stop right there everyone! im not asking you to like him but plz give mj a break please!
whether you love him or hate him it is not his fault- AEG are the ones that have been rude to fans, they were really f-ing stupid to book the O2 for an opening date 2 days after madonnas concert there.
if it went ahead on the 8th then it would mean theyd have less than 1day to set up and rehearse- i remember looking at ticketmaster round the time i bought those tixs and thinking “wow!their leaving it pretty tight there!”
all the same,i bought a ticket for the 12th like an idiot, but thankfully i havent bought plane tickets yet and im going over any way this summer to stay with a friend in london, so it dont realy affect me financially, but im gona try and buy an earlier date now and hold on to the ones iv got- who knows? maybe he will perform in march??

p.s. to the person who said hes not been turning up for rehearsals-were in te blazes did u hear that?!

m0ng00se | 5/20/2009, 9:36 pm EST

Um… folks?? Don’t EVER think he will do even ONE concert. Start getting your money back. Think “class action suit”!! He was done years ago. He’s WHACKO!!!

Xander | 5/20/2009, 5:52 pm EST

Based on the new Press Conference video on Michaeljacksonlive.com, it looks like it wasn’t MJ’s decision.
____________________________ _______

It wasn’t. It was actually AEG, the company producing the show who decided to push it back because they don’t have all their ducks in a row in terms of production cost. But MJ’s handlers as well as the king of crazy himself, don’t know how to release an official and concise media announcement. So he has to take the blame and of course folks are ready to rip him to shreds. And by the way I never believed he’d do all the dates anyway.

Ozzie | 5/21/2009, 1:35 am EST

This is absolutely ridiculous. We have tickets for July 10th, flights booked from AUSTRALIA, which are non refundable i might add, and we can’t afford to fork out another 2g to go back in March next year to see him. These organisers better fix this problem, people travelling from other countries should be reimbursed airfares aswell, not just concert tickets. One big disappointment!!

Chain | 5/21/2009, 2:42 am EST

Stop fucking defending this asshole!

concerned! | 5/21/2009, 4:44 am EST

Can anyone clear up the signed contract business with the family? Is this just another rumour or are the concerts going to be cancelled totally?

Anon | 5/21/2009, 5:00 am EST

I booked flight tickets, hotel and concert tickets for 14th July for my husband, 2 daughters and my self. It was a treat for one of my daughters 21st birthday. Now I am stuck with air tickets which I cant get money back for and cant afford to buy show tickets in London (as they are £80 a ticket each)instead of the MJ Concert. Don’t know what to do as we would still like to see him perform in March but again it will skin me another £550 for air and hotel then. And… will he even perform or will he be burnt out! Angry Anon.

Tim | 5/21/2009, 8:48 am EST

…and thus it begins!

How many of us knew there’d be at least SOME cancellations? Well, nice to see he’s getting out of the way early.

I’m like the fans; I’d love to see him perform. The reality ishe’s so broke, he has no other choice BUT to perform. But that’s the business end. The personal end is that he has a propensity to cop out on such matters.

So, THIS IS IT!: The great scam has started. Hope you frequent flyers can get your miles back…

which dates? anyone????????

Hock Ptooey | 5/21/2009, 10:20 am EST

You’re not getting the 1984 Michael. He’s an sick and twisted old man, now, with lots of issues.

He’s looking at the man in the mirror, he sees this and that’s why he postpones shows.

x | 5/21/2009, 10:53 am EST

the dates are listed above!!!

Jess.c | 5/21/2009, 3:58 pm EST

I have two tickets for the 16th of July..
whats the odds the same thing is going to happen?
i think its very likey :(
i will be devastated if this does happen.

F'loonslayer | 5/21/2009, 5:37 pm EST

What are you all whining about? You’re getting exactly what you paid for. You paid to see a washed up, disingenuous freakazoid and now he’s teaching you just how washed up and disingenuous he is. STFU and eat it. You f’loon set your standards low and Wacko is meeting them with the lowest possible standards he can muster up.

Disappointed | 5/21/2009, 6:58 pm EST

So the production co. says they can’t get the stage show ready in the short space of time between Madonna’s concert and the start of MJ’s concerts. Surely they should have considered this before they scheduled the dates? What a fiasco!

Cj | 5/21/2009, 8:56 pm EST

Again numbnuts, Their is a difference between “not guilty” and “found innocennt” He is (or was) a mega rich celebrity. He “got off” because he’s Michael Jackson.Oh, by the way, it’s not 1991 anymore. That’s how long ago it’s been that the “king of pop” BS began to lose it’s gloss.

Used2BHugeMJFan | 5/22/2009, 5:16 am EST

How can anyone be surprised this happened??!! If I knew people were placing bets I would have bet against MJ… Not surprised but still very disapointed he couldn’t get it together… AGAIN!

GSR | 5/22/2009, 8:41 am EST

Three quarters of a million tickests sold, I would be quite happy to sit on all that money for months on end and then refund it back to those that can claim it back, keeping the intrest.
It looks like one big fraud.

mj4never | 5/22/2009, 11:41 am EST

In literature, this is called foreshadowing, as in a small indicator of bigger disasters and misfortunes to come in the future.
If you put your money on an undependable train wreck, you can’t be shocked or surprised when he goes off the rails.

AdamLambertWindy | 5/22/2009, 6:56 pm EST

For me Micheal Jackson stay the king of Pop.

We dont have the wright to condam im. Nothing about him was proved he makes all if he did accused, so for me, he his innocent of the all crimes..Who many peoples, who wants his money make that to M.J. So please respect that. Yes he have a huge problems for his face, but his not to old for Underterning or performing. He have the same voice he always have and he dance always like before. Jeez it is not old to have 40 years old or a little bit more.
Look Madonna, she have more and she perform like a young girl who have 20 years old. So if he was in the perfect for, he will make a huge concert…

So if I will dont afraid to take a airplain I go and see his concert 100%100 sure I will be there. But I will to afraid to take airplan..So if he come in Montréal be sure im gona to see him wright away.

Chris Hansen | 5/26/2009, 8:12 pm EST

Take a seat, Michael. Have a drink of lemonade. What were you thinking? I’m Chris Hansen.

Becky | 5/28/2009, 7:26 am EST

I’m a massive MJ fan and am soooo excited about these concerts!!! But now I am seriously worried, I couldn’t get tickets of ticketmaster so I had to get them second-hand through viagogo for about £500 so I won’t get a refund if it’s cancelled!!! Feel so bad for everyone who’s lost out over this mess – it’s a joke!!! I just hope nothing else happens and he actually performs all of the concert dates…

People still buy into that freakazoid’s promises??? He hasn’t kept concert promises when he was a lot younger. And you all expect this old twisted freak to keep it now?

Kiss your money goodbye. It’s not going to happen.

And wake up. It’s 2009. MJ is so last century.

Mani | 6/12/2009, 6:12 am EST

Michael Jackson is the greatest singer of all time. Those who say that he is a last century singer don’t know at all what music is. they are freak peple. Michael is the best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So I guess the tour is off… since he’s dead.

Wonder about refunds.

Sheri | 6/25/2009, 7:15 pm EST

Well, it’s over. He won’t be doing any shows, huh.

Dave | 6/25/2009, 7:42 pm EST

Michael was one of the greatest entertainers of all time. 50 is far too young to die.
Spare a thought for his family, and his 3 children.
He was misunderstood, he was a shy, vulnerable person, who in my opinion wouldn’t hurt anyone, let alone a child…..people were out to get him, he was rich, and famous…..when you are in that position people take advantage. God bless you Michael.

The eternal king of pop

The rider of the moon dancing with the stars
He now dances with the planets around the sun
He will always be a bright star
He will always be eternal
He now dance to Billie Jean in comets
Finally Thriller play beyond the universe
The boy who did not want to grow now turned angel
Finally, Michael flew

For Michael, the eternal king of pop
