Eminem Honors Proof at Free “Relapse” Show in Detroit

Eminem made his official return to the stage last night, performing a free concert at Detroit’s Motor City Hotel to celebrate yesterday’s release of his long-awaited new album Relapse. The rapper performed eight songs in just under 40 minutes, rifling through seven Relapse tracks before bringing some D12 members on the stage for an encore of the 8 Mile hit “Lose Yourself.” Nah Right has video of the entire performance.

(Check out photos of Eminem’s secret Relapse release gig.)

“Detroit, did you miss me?,” Em asked the crowd before “Hello.” With DJ Alchemist on the tables and Kon Artis as hype man, Eminem sounded sharp bringing his fresh Relapse tracks to the stage. Em also paid tribute to his close friend Proof, who was shot and killed outside a local club in 2006. “I was a little bit nervous ’cause I don’t have my right-hand man tonight. I know you know who I’m talking about,” Eminem admitted as the crowd chanted “Proof!” The entire performance was filmed — professionally, not the cellphone quality footage on the Web now — and two of the songs will appear on Friday’s episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live!. “This is one of the best shows I’ve probably ever done, because when I get off stage, I’m actually going to remember it,” Eminem, who rhymes candidly about his pill addiction on Relapse, joked.

Yesterday prior to the show, Em turned his Detroit hometown into the playing field for a citywide scavenger hunt, sending fans running around the Motor City as he revealed clues as to the whereabouts of more tickets to the release-party gig via Twitter. “4 more tickets are in the Joe Louis fist monument on Jefferson. Look between the thumb & index,” Em Tweeted. “Ok, Paul has a pair of tix at the Original Pancake House on Woodward and 14 Mile. He’s hungry, so come quick” and “A man with a mohawk named Andrew is standing in front of Comerica Park at the Tiger. He has four tickets.”

Video footage of the show is decent, but the audio clipping makes it unlistenable like so many other non-soundboard, audience recordings without manual mic gain control and limiting. It is nice to hear him actually rap and not lip sync like on the Jimmy Kimmel live and past MTV performances or am I wrong about that?

THIS RELAPSE CD IS THE BEST HIP HOP ALBUM IN QUITE SOME TIME,

That’s like saying the corn-encrusted doody I made the other day, is the best doody in quite some time.

eminem | 5/20/2009, 5:12 pm EST

i love how people either love him or hate him,
the production on this cd is flawless…..the lyrics and wordplay are amazing….
i guess “anonymous” should go back to listening to taylor swift, jonas brothers, or lil wayne, because that shit is all garbage…

Anonymous | 5/20/2009, 5:30 pm EST

No, I will go back to listening to AC/DC, Tori Amos, Air, Arcade Fire, the Beach Boys, The Beatles, Beck, Ben Folds, Bjork, Eric Clapton, Elvis Costello, Fiona Apple, Flaming Lips, Fleet Foxes, Fleetwood Mac, Peter Gabriel, Green Day, Jellyfish, Led Zeppelin, Prince, Queen, R.E.M., Radiohead, Ray Davies, the Rolling Stones, U2, Wilco, and about a thousand other artists.

Eminem is not fit to shine their shoes.

Lil Em, Dre-dre…look, dropped a verse and beat on the ground…of course you looked, bitin’ suckas.

Will | 5/20/2009, 6:26 pm EST

You’re wrong about the lip syncing, Em chooses to rap to his own vocal track (wack to me) and it seemed last night he did Underground and Lose Yourself without the backing vocals, the rest of the show his vocals were way louder than his mic

Je$$e | 5/20/2009, 6:34 pm EST

rap is the worst sh!t to hear live…

Paul | 5/20/2009, 9:19 pm EST

Best hip hop album of 2009? Definitely!

Album of the Year? maaaaybe xD

Finally, after 4 years, the wait is over. Relapse is awesome, the whole album is so dark and ”evil”, that and the drug-related lyrics reminds me of the Slim Shady LP.

i hope eminem comes to argentina… BELIEVE!

from the opening skit ‘dr west’ which is f***ing hilarious, you just know that this is going to be a good album. Shady is by far the most talented rapper ever…you can make an argument for other rappers like 2pac, etc. but Em’ is spitting out much more intelligent rhymes, that really speak to average people of any color (not the money and bitches crap that gets repeated and repeated over and over)…TWICE as fast….I don’t even see how someone can talk, nevermind rhyme, at that pace. Put that to the beats and production of the father of gangser rap, Dr. Dre, and you have pure musical MAGIC.

Sharona | 5/20/2009, 11:34 pm EST

By far a powerful album. I cannot stop listening to it. He really did revert back and it sounds amazing. Happy he’s back. Can’t wait for relapse 2.

I just bought RELAPSE and it is fucking amazing. I’ve been listening to that album for 2 days straight and its EXTREMELY addictive.

His lyrics, flow , beats, hook, and rhymes are amazing. BUY RELAPSE. YOU WILL NOT BE DISSAPOINTED! Hail Eminem, the saviour of hip hop.

Role Model | 5/21/2009, 8:00 pm EST

Mule Tool – I understand that people get upset, as you clearly demonstrate, by his lyrics. But think of his audience who are listening to him. I assume you are female because of the reference directed at me telling me to ’suck on these’ – sounds almost like something Eminem would say but in his case it would be more like ’suck on this’. Also you do a pretty good job of attacking his wife – I think you would make Eminem proud for two reasons – 1) you have a mouth on you and 2) you show a great aptitude at aiming your vitriol at his wife – are you sure you are not related? In fact you are starting to remind me of him a little. Getting to the point though – and this will only carry any weight if you are able to understand the complexities of the issue – the fact remains that if a comparison was made between today’s society to that of say half a decade ago it is clear that great shifts have been instigated concerning how we conceive of ourselves as human beings – it could be said that formerly decades ago the predominant religious philosophy in the Western world was Christianity – today what is being disseminated in Western intellectual thought is Postmodernism. This is now the prevailing philosophical outlook of the Western world – its premise could be stated as follows – God is not the ultimate truth behind reality who brings purpose to and makes sense of our existence; how we are to live – so therefore there is no absolute truth and everything, including moral conduct is relative. Now think for a second of the consequences that such logic would have when applied pervasively throughout intellectual and everyday culture. Where do morals come from if not from God and where do we turn to for an ethical foundation if moral behaviour is just a product of human culture and if there is nothing above that of the human to arbitrate right from wrong how do we know for certain that drug taking, casual s%x, abortion, divorce, swinging and cheating on our partners are really wrong – we can’t! The unfortunate fact is that if this is what our society takes on board as the predominant understanding of the world and our place in it, namely if we decide that God does not exist then suddenly everything becomes permissible and we are freed from any universally binding moral obligations or imperatives to do what we choose – moral preference then becomes exactly that – just a preference that may differ from one person to the next but nothing absolute – morality is now purely subjective and divorced from any objective reference point – in other words – the ‘law giver’ – God. What then happens when I decide I want to take drugs – and you decide you want to get intimate with me and then get intimate with someone else and then I decide the same while upping my dose on vallium then impregnating a few women along the way while out of it, recklessly indulging a sexual appetite while high and careless and at the end of it you end up with 6 kids all with different fathers and I end up with say 10 kids most I don’t even know about because the women were perfect strangers except yours because we are still quite close and casually seeing each other. What does this recipe of amoral living usher in? It ushers in the succeeding generation who now suffer under the consequences of our generations failed choices which were encouraged under the veneer of a predominant moral outlook that stemmed from a Godless worldview – one that takes morals to be something purely arbitrary that human society just makes up and changes as culture evolves. If you are still on the same page – then ponder what future generation will be conceived – A ‘Shady’ generation perhaps, pun intended – If you want to know how you raise up a generation of r^pists and easy women that don’t have to be because they freely give themselves – you might try looking and studying closely Eminem’s life, his lyrics, the people he is talking to through his music and why it is that they are growing up in boundary-less homes where their parents are either not around or do not care about their upbringing, their well-being or their future – when you do this then you might understand a little why he resonates with them and then you might start understanding why he is such a cultural force that so many identify with. And If my posts are too long and long winded why do you bother reading them – Perhaps they seem obsessive – but in all honesty a book certainly is needed to give this subject adequate treatment. Am I just an Eminem but# kisser – well it’s either that or sucking on those melons of yours cos it would be a little difficult to do both at once. Also if this is how you see it – I’d rather kiss his but# because he has so much more to say than you ever will. Do you want to understand and discern, for once in your life, what the problem is or simply blame the child now full grown – the one with the huge megaphone in hand and great big mirror in the other who steps up to point out some important truths and reflect a tragic picture of hypocrisy and failed role models. Who should the finger of blame go to first? – the child who disrespects, has an attitude and whose behaviour is just a big finger flipped at authority or the parent whose own conduct taught the child to be that way in the first place – “Why” you ask is there “so much anger out of this generation?” – Lets see… maybe try – neglect, parental drug abuse, psychological abuse, physical abuse, emotional deprivation, absent fathers, village bike mothers and child sexual abuse and then the penny might drop and you might actually start getting the picture. You say – “Get over yourself and wake up and smell the coffee, the world’s not fair it will eat you if you let it”. But maybe the converse is true maybe certain parents need to get over themselves and put the interests of their child first – not the step father who is sexually molesting the daughter while simultaneously satisfying the mother. ‘Why so serious’ as the joker says ‘why so much anger’ as you so surprisingly ask – watch Heather Ledger in that brilliant scene, contemplate the dialogue and then repeat the question to yourself. “Wake up and smell the coffee, the world’s not fair it will eat you if you let it”. Yeah either that or the child will grow to perpetuate the abuse, gag and bind his girlfriend, stick her in the trunk of his car and take himself, her and his unborn child down to the bottom of the lake as he self-destructs.

it’s a shame that such a great hip-hop icon, eminem, chooses to lip-synch when he performs live. i just got done watching jimmy kimmel in high-def, and it was so obvious that he was lip-synching, it was disgusting. MOST respect LOST for eminem.

what a waste.

Eminem’s new album is amazing, its bonus tracks are easily better than anything that rock/rap autotune hack Lil Wayne puts out this year.
