Adam Lambert fans were ready for a Glamb-Slide last night, as our own Rob Sheffield put it in his live blog, but ultimately finalists Lambert and Kris Allen both performed well on American Idol’s last performance show, leaving tonight’s results too close to call. Producers were clearly saving the real fireworks for the special Wednesday-night blowout — which will reportedly feature a motley collection of stars including Black Eyed Peas, Queen Latifah, Kiss and Steve Martin — so Tuesday’s emphasis was on the three performances (singers’ pick, Idol creator Simon Fuller’s selection and the Kara DioGuardi co-written coronation song, “No Boundaries”).
(Relive all the Season Eight action, in photos.)
The night was so significant Simon Cowell wore a shirt with a collar and Paula Abdul generously returned to her pre-verbal state. Sir Anthony Hopkins was in the audience, as was Suri Cruise, who nabbed a photo with Glammy according to her really fake Twitter. But the only person angling for a chunk of the spotlight was DioGuardi, who was clearly proud of “No Boundaries,” a song all the other judges went to great lengths to avoid slamming directly (”I’m not going to judge that song, I’m going to judge you,” Simon told Adam, thereby judging the song). But how did the performances break down?
(Check out photos from last night’s final performance show of Season Eight.)
• Adam Lambert nearly blew our minds and his own head off blasting the final note of Sam Cooke’s “A Change Is Gonna Come.” His performance was a reinvention that emphasized the song’s power in every sense of the term. If Fuller was aiming for a wink-wink commentary on the cultural significance of Lambert’s potential Idol victory, well played, sir. (More photos of Lambert in all his leather’n’spandex glory.)
• Lambert scored first by emerging from a fog to reprise his cover of Gary Jules’ version of Tears of Fears’ “Mad World” in a Lestat cloak that reminded Randy of Twilight and Sheffield of Purple Rain.
• Kris Allen turned out a soulful rendition of “Ain’t No Sunshine” at the piano aimed straight at the jugular of tween America and everyone else with a pulse. DioGuardi added if Allen’s performance “doesn’t move you, there’s something wrong with you.”
• Allen went for a hacky-sackin’ acoustic-jammin’ feel for Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On,” which Cowell said undermined the song’s urgent message and the night’s weight. DioGuardi, however, felt Allen is ready to “bring change.” He may be good, but he’s not exactly RS 100 material.
• Nobody handled the tacky, meteorological-metaphor-packed “No Boundaries” with aplomb, but Lambert’s version was far more dynamic and dramatic than Allen’s off-key, nervous warble (if there was ever a time in the history of Idol for Randy to revive his “pitchy, dogg” critique, this was his now).
So who’s got the edge heading into tonight’s finale? Was Tuesday’s most exciting moment getting a glimpse of Tatiana Del Toro during the Season Eight montage that run under Carrie Underwood’s performance of “Home Sweet Home”? Don’t forget to hit up Rock Daily tonight when Rob Sheffield live-blogs the Idol finale and our Season Eight winner is crowned.
