Katy Perry Talks Pop Plans for Next LP, Dispels Personal Rumors

5/19/09, 5:23 pm EST

“I Kissed A Girl” singer and couture chameleon Katy Perry recently stopped by the Rolling Stone offices to open up about the pressures of following up her hit debut One of the Boys, what the new LP will sound like and why her parents aren’t merely the staunch Christians the media makes them out to be.

“The second record is really important to me because I think it shows whether I’m meant to do this, or I got lucky,” Perry says. Coming off a smash hits like “I Kissed A Girl” and “Hot N Cold” and getting a platinum plaque for her debut album, the 24-year-old singer-songwriter hopes to recruit some big-name talent like Calvin Harris and Guy Sigsworth. “I guess I’m going to take the clout I have now and go, ‘Yeah, I want to work with you, because you wouldn’t have worked with me five years ago,’ ” she says, adding that she will record again with Greg Wells, Dr. Luke and Max Martin when she enters the studio early this autumn.

“Basically what I want to do is not alienate the audience that I have at all. I think some people feel like they have had success with one thing and one idea and one record and they want to pull a 180 and try a totally different thing,” Perry explains. “I definitely feel like that’s the wrong move. I feel like you just have to grow from it, you can branch off of it but keep the tree the same in some ways. Some people get full of themselves, and they think that anything they do is going to work or turn to gold or be the right move, and the reason why you’re here is because of the people that like your music and the fans, so you always should keep an ear open to what they’re saying.” Essentially, she doesn’t want to “pull a Chris Gaines,” as Perry puts it, name-checking the failed rock alter ego of Garth Brooks.

Perry hopes to keep an engineer on board when she travels to Europe for seven weeks this summer to play festivals. Describing the sound that she’s going for, Perry says she’ll “definitely keep it pop.” ” ‘Love Fool’ by the Cardigans meets ‘Into the Groove’ by Madonna but a little more meat on the bones lyrically,” Perry says. “I’m not just gonna talk about the beat and just dancing, I like to get into the meaning.” Perry was less forward with what the songs will be about, but did say they’d focus on the whirlwind last year of her life, to dealing with fame to friendships to her “relationships,” likely a nod to her breakup and makeup with Gym Class Heroes’ Travis McCoy.

As for her parents, who have been portrayed as Bible-beaters, Perry insists that despite the fact that her parents are famously religious, they are “cool and modern.” In fact, Perry’s mother used to hang out with Jimi Hendrix and her father sold acid called Strawberry Fields for Timothy Leary. “I think this whole thing of them, ‘They probably threw me in the basement when they heard me singing “I Kissed a Girl,” ‘ they really understand what I’m talking about, the tongue-in-cheek aspect.” Perry says. “Even though my mom isn’t rock & roller, pot-smoking debutante that she was and my dad isn’t the acid dealer with long hair anymore, they’ve probably had more intense moments than anything I’ve ever done.”

Calvin Harriss is not that big of a “name.” He would die to work with her, not the other way around. That said, his star is on the rise as a producer.

katyperryhas0talent | 5/19/2009, 7:33 pm EST

I Kissed a Girl was fun, but seriously that was the only good single she’s had. I’m hoping she won’t continue to pollute the radiowaves for years to come. She’d have made a fine one hit wonder in my book. if you rely on producers more than your songwriting, then you’re not a good musician ;)

toby | 5/19/2009, 10:06 pm EST

give it up, so tired of your crap.

LovingKaty | 5/19/2009, 11:20 pm EST

I love her and love her album a lot. It’s the first time I buy something for sooo long!

Thank you Katy, you deserve everything you got!

shrly123 | 5/20/2009, 1:24 am EST

i think you are a really most orgianal person that has come out in a long time!!!

Black Hole Sun | 5/20/2009, 1:29 am EST

If Rihanna could get past the one-hit wonder and become a “bonafide superstar” as some people have put it, without any singing, songwriting or any sort of musical abilities (unless you count making the best-dressed lists as an ability), why shouldn’t Katy? At least she writes her own stuff, she even helped pen Kelly Clarkson’s song I Do Not Hook Up. I just hope she goes for a more punk-rock sound on her next album. Oh, and by the way, it’s been public knowledge for years that Britney lip-syncs at practically all her “live” performances, and people still buy her records, accusations of being a fake aside.

Brian McGee | 5/20/2009, 5:50 am EST

The media never gave Chris Gaines a change, he was way before his time, and Garth was just a easy target, its been ten years since the Lamb, give the album a listen.

o rly | 5/20/2009, 5:59 am EST

“At least she writes her own stuff, she even helped pen Kelly Clarkson’s song I Do Not Hook Up.”

A co-write of changing one or two words before handing off her leftovers to Kelly does not constitute as “helping Kelly write” the song. An inferior version was up on Youtube long before Kelly’s album was released.

I don’t know why people insist on saying that she “writes her own songs” when the two worst songs on the album (the last of which was the single that tanked hard, ‘Thinking of You’) were the only ones actually penned by her.

terrible | 5/20/2009, 9:42 am EST

has anyone actually seen her sing live? she’s horrible. i mean absolutely shite-tastic.

enjoy your 15 minutes Katy Perry, the only reason you are famous is b/c you are smoking hot.

KOL | 5/20/2009, 10:06 am EST

Actually, I saw Katy live in a small venue in Nashville. She played acoustic guitar and sang some of her songs. I thought she sounded great. She does use a backing track on the chorus of some songs, but overall it was an impressive performance.

yellow | 5/20/2009, 1:41 pm EST

orly, she does write her songs. How do u know theyr only leftovers? Were u there when she wrote it? Just because u hate her doesn’t mean u shoulldn’t give her credit where it’s due. Hater.

She's the real thing | 5/21/2009, 12:15 pm EST

Folks, the girl has talent plain and simple. Personally I am 49 and played music professionally for 27 years. She’s brought melody to the ffornt after years of Rap that has no musical value. I hope she does really well for a long time to come. Yeah she’s hot, but that’s been a needed thing since MTV came about in 83 or so. Try getting in front of a mic and singing live if you think you got what it takes. I bet alot of you will be happy to go back to burger flipping after getting booed off a few stages!

John | 5/22/2009, 9:44 am EST

I saw her live too and thought she was fantastic. This is no one-hit- wonder but a real talent And I am 51 and played professionally for 25 years.

Katy Perry is hot!!!!!!!!!!!!
Bonerlicious! !!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Okay Katy, we get it that you’re upset that there weren’t enough positive comments about you. No need to start sockpuppeting now.

“has anyone actually seen her sing live? she’s horrible. i mean absolutely shite-tastic.

Um… no. She’s famous because she’s extremely talented and determined. This woman has been struggling to make it this far for YEARS! She deserves the fame and recognition she’s receiving. I’ve seen her perform live, many times, and I personally think she’s amazing. Jumping around, pumping up the crowd, and still singing the right notes ain’t easy. ;)
Have you ever seen any of her acoustic performances, btw? If you haven’t, you should. I know it’s just a matter of opinion, but it bothers me when people give such negative feedback and don’t give her any credit for what she’s accomplished.

Anyway, keep up the great work, Katy. I can’t wait to listen to your new album. :)

Ear Ache | 5/24/2009, 10:45 am EST

Gotta agree with “Terrible” on this one. This girl is largely a studio creation.

Go back and look at her performance at the Grammy’s. Her elaborate stage props like giant bananas or whatever and wacky outfits don’t compensate for the fact that that her vocals were simply awful.

Unfortunately, “artists” like her are par for the course in today’s music world.

Happy | 5/24/2009, 3:07 pm EST

Ok, I agree that Katy isn’t always in top form live. Especially some of her performances that have been broadcast on TV have left something to be desired.

On the other hand, some of her live performances have been stellar. She just needs more consistency.

And as a songwriter, personality, and STAR, she is simply superb and is perfect for the times. On top of that, I would really like to be in her.

Mustafa | 5/25/2009, 5:07 am EST

I remember when she used to sing Christian Gospel Music and went by the name of Katy Hudson. I love her music.

I loved the song Faith Won’t Fail that she did around 2002. It changed my life.

Thanks Katy for doing that.

fallinginlovex_ | 5/25/2009, 10:15 am EST

stop being horrible towards her, shes a great singer her album is one of the best i’ve ever heard, i love it! It’s on my iPod constantly, i mean if you dont like her then thats okayy, but theres no need to say some of the things you lot were saying!

Be Real | 5/25/2009, 12:01 pm EST

Not so much into these singers where image is everything and the performances are just over the top. Honestly, her performance on Idol was just a travesty. And I agree that her live singing needs a LOT of work. But you know, if she continues cranking out catchy tunes, I’m sure she’ll continue to sell.
