Green Day Rip Into “Breakdown,” Fan Favorites at NYC Club Show

Green Day continued their march to an inevitable Number One album, setting up rock-opera shop at New York City’s Bowery Ballroom on May 18th for the East Coast live debut of 21st Century Breakdown. Their Bay Area guerilla gigs in April all featured the record in its entirety. But at the Bowery, the band played a pocket-jukebox edition of the album, starting with the opening title track and the first single, “Know Your Enemy.” Then the new six-piece Green Day — with singer-guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong, bassist Mike Dirnt and drummer Tré Cool assisted on guitars, keyboards and extra vocals by Jason Freese, Jason White and Jeff Matika — sprinted across the first two acts, concentrating on action-rock tunes such as “East Jesus Nowhere,” “Before the Lobotomy” and “Murder City,” and finished with nearly all of the third.

(Billie Joe crowd surfs, a fan warbles “Longview” — relive the show, in photos.)

The result was less emphasis on 21st Century Breakdown’s theatrical scope and more on its knockout-hit details: the pneumatic riff in “East Jesus Nowhere”; the iron-and-sugar pop of “Last of the American Girls”; the ‘69-Who dynamite in “See the Light,” with Cool ramming home the Tommy-like climax (”We’re Not Gonna Take It” for the post-Bush hangover) with brisk Keith Moon-ish drum rolls.

Playing most but not the whole of Breakdown also meant that Green Day didn’t have to spend the first half of the night remembering all of the words and licks — they could settle into performing the songs. Armstrong quickly got down to enjoying himself, nearly plunging into the crowd during the highland-fling section of “21st Century Breakdown.” During “East Jesus Nowhere,” he kissed a stage invader full on the mouth.

The goofy jubilation continued in the hour-long second set, with Armstrong quoting James Brown’s “I Feel Good” during “American Idiot” and bringing a fan on stage to sing “Longview.” (She couldn’t carry a tune but knew most of the words and wore a Kerplunk sweatshirt — qualification enough.) Cool stepped out from his kit to sing and sling a guitar on a clattering cowpunk number, and the ska romp “King for a Day” became an extended opportunity for Armstrong to play soul preacher, like a quart-sized version of Solomon Burke. Dirnt, in comparison, was a paragon of restraint. But he got his licks in. At the start of Breakdown’s “American Eulogy,” as Armstrong sang the “Song of the Century” theme in his plaintive tenor, Dirnt laid a broad mean bed of barely controlled bass feedback underneath, sounding like trouble coming ’round the corner.

Green Day didn’t perform one of my favorite Breakdown songs at the Bowery — “Horseshoes and Handgrenades,” with its blunt mission statement, “I’m not fucking around.” But everything they played made the same point.

Set List:

“21st Century Breakdown”
“Know Your Enemy”
“East Jesus Nowhere”
“Before The Lobotomy”
“Last Of The American Girls”
“Murder City”
“Viva La Gloria (Little Girl)”
“The Static Age”
“21 Guns”
“American Eulogy (Mass Hysteria/Modern World)”
“See The Light”

“American Idiot”
“Jesus Of Suburbia”
“Longview”
“Who Wrote Holden Caufield?”
“Dominated Love Slave”
“Going To Pasalacqua”
“She”
“King For A Day”/”Shout” [Isley Brothers cover]
“Minority”

Great job by David Fricke as always.

Alex | 5/19/2009, 11:27 am EST

Seeing them tonight at Webster Hall – can’t wait!

Missy | 5/19/2009, 12:00 pm EST

Saw them there last night! It was the “time of my life”! Great article.

Will | 5/19/2009, 12:21 pm EST

Sounds like a great show but why wouldn’t they play HHG that’s their best song ever

Adam Taylor | 5/19/2009, 12:36 pm EST

what great night! i was lucky enough to get into tonight’s show as well. i can imagine how difficult it is for the lads to compose the second set, that best represents every era th band has gone through. i think considering their EXTENSIVE catalog, they did a fantastic job, and knew exactly what we wanted to hear. (although for a diehard of 14+ years, no real suprises) let’s see what tricks hey have up their sleeves this evening..

MOSS | 5/19/2009, 12:45 pm EST

I would like to hear a beefed up, live version of “Love Slave.”

ar | 5/19/2009, 12:55 pm EST

Loved Green Day since about ‘92ish, love the new album, but “HHG” is nearly a complete ripoff of The Hives “Main Offender”. That said, I still like it!

Chaz | 5/19/2009, 1:38 pm EST

Not enough old tunes last night and Minority is a weak closer

Fail | 5/19/2009, 1:52 pm EST

ar, please give me a break. Do I really need to list all of the songs that “Main Offender” rips off?

Je$$e | 5/19/2009, 2:00 pm EST

can rolling stone ever do anything without mentioning Bush?

catlin | 5/19/2009, 2:23 pm EST

cant wait to see them in August! soo far away!

ar | 5/19/2009, 3:23 pm EST

Good lord Fail, lighten up. I even said I still like the song, and I know that almost any rock tune these days can be traced back to “insert-song-name-here”. All I meant was that when I listen to “Horseshoes and Handgrenades”, I can’t help but hear “Main Offender”. I’m sure other songs on this album (or any, really) also bear some resemblance to other songs of rock’n'roll past, but that one just immediately jumped out at me as soon as I heard it.
Also, looking forward to seeing them again in July.

Fail | 5/19/2009, 4:10 pm EST

ar, the lord has nothing to do with this :)

Nope | 5/19/2009, 4:17 pm EST

No Jesse, they can’t. In fact, they’ll even delete ones posts that disagree with them and call them out on their not stop liberal bs. Won’t you Rolling Stone, yes you will. I’ll never ever pay a dime for your magazine.

TragicCaseofMyReality | 5/19/2009, 4:26 pm EST

I hope they play Peacemaker on their tour. I am seriously in love with that song right now.

deano | 5/19/2009, 5:26 pm EST

I thought they were dull as dishwater on SNL. I guess you have to be there.

Cj | 5/19/2009, 6:27 pm EST

This band still sucks…

Dom | 5/19/2009, 6:40 pm EST

They say before “Idiot” came out they felt their best stuff was on “Warning”. Yet, the only song they play off the album is “Minority”?! I would have picked “Warning”, “Macy’s Day”, or “Blood, Sex..”. But I guess it’s tough to select these songs when everything is so awesome!

gus | 5/19/2009, 6:45 pm EST

HHG?

JasonTH | 5/19/2009, 7:16 pm EST

Wow, “Dominated Love Slave”! I hope they play that @ MSG.

Nona | 5/19/2009, 8:13 pm EST

Deano – SNL isn’t really a good forum for their kind of show, of course they were going to be pretty restrained.

erica | 5/19/2009, 8:18 pm EST

haha i see there not doin’ “hitchin’ a ride” haha i remember wat billie did in that song…. XDXDXD

ar | 5/19/2009, 8:52 pm EST

Sorry for getting the lord involved. And maybe “complete ripoff” was a little much.

SBZ | 5/19/2009, 9:09 pm EST

awesome concert!!! best concert of my life!!! i actually touched Billie Joe and Mike!! and got a video of BJ literally an inch from me!! definitely the best night of my life!! Green Day really is the best band in the world!!!! :)

BK | 5/19/2009, 10:53 pm EST

LOL! of COURSE it was the best show of your life! OBVIOUSLY, you never saw a show in the 60’s 70’s or 80’s!!! Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha ha!!!

The Intl | 5/20/2009, 12:27 am EST

Did they make stupid faces throughout the show? Because that is all they’re good at.

Kristin | 5/20/2009, 1:12 am EST

Amazing show.. and my hand is in the picture :-D

Jack | 5/20/2009, 1:14 am EST

Man, when will Rolling Stone get off this band’s jock. Seriously, there’s good bands out there.

MarkSeverin | 5/20/2009, 3:41 am EST

Awww they didn’t play Horseshoes and Handgrenades and the most important they didn’t play Basketcase!!

John | 5/20/2009, 4:53 am EST

RS does seem to be a bit in the tank for Green Day, but it’s hard to blame them. When people say “there’s good bands out there,” I’m torn between correcting verb choice (there’s is “there is” implying singular use, “bands” is plural) and just wanting to slap someone for overt pretension. Green Day is not the best band ever, but they write solid pop-rock songs and have never tried to be anything more than what they are, which is impressive. Too many artists that get labeled as “Great” take themselves far too seriously (Animal Collective, U2, R.E.M., U2, Eminem, and, of course, U2) and music suffers for it. I have never seen why “popular” equals “bad” (nor, be fair, “good”) or why “obscure” equals “misunderstood genius.” A band like Animal Collective is amazing; their arrangements are genius, interesting, and fun to listen to, but that music is not for everybody, and we need to accept that. Green Day’s music isn’t for everybody either, but it’s for a wider swath of everybody, and we need to accept that. That doesn’t make it “good,” nor does it make it “bad;” it just means that Green Day’s music, like everyone’s, has to be appreciated in context. All things considered, I think they’ve done some great stuff, and no matter much audiophiles like to rant against bands like this, at least half of the albums they’ve put out have been solid (Warning, Nimrod, 21st Century Breakdown) two have been disappointing (Kerplunk, Insomniac) and two have been excellent (Dookie, American Idiot). From where I stand, that’s a pretty excellent track record. It could just be my state of mind after listening to the (somewhat disappointing) pre-release of British Sea Power’s “Man or Aran” that I need to review, but I’m inclined to agree with Fricke that sometimes “fun” outweighs “smart.”

K, rant over.

In My Opinion | 5/20/2009, 8:44 am EST

In my opinion, bands need to stick with what they know best i.e. – sex, drugs and rock n roll. That’s where System of A Down, Rage Against the Machine, Linkin Park, Green Day and every other band that’s political went wrong. They bitch about the very system that made them rich in the first place, kinda ironic don’t you think.
When I blast a rock album I sure as hell don’t want to hear Billie Joe’s opinion on Bush or the war. Why don’t they join the military, or do something productive than voice their opinion. Until then, stfu and entertain me. That’s why I’m buying your album, ENTERTAINMENT.

Tails | 5/20/2009, 11:23 am EST

So how did Billy Joe enter/exit the stage.
Did he tuck his head between his legs then spin off to collect rings and defeat Dr. Robotnik? (after applying eyeliner, that is)

Anonymous | 5/20/2009, 11:43 am EST

Well after looking at that setlist, there’s no way i’m spending a dollar to go see them. Their new album is horrible and they barely played any older songs….they didn’t even play welcome to paradise????

unknown | 5/20/2009, 12:37 pm EST

i’d like green day aslo play songs like holiday, welcome to paradise, st. jimmy, when i come around… etc..

KI | 5/20/2009, 3:10 pm EST

If you weren’t there you shouldn’t comment….it was the best show i’ve ever seen, period.

C | 5/20/2009, 3:29 pm EST

Never liked this band, next article.

sanfe(BCN) | 5/20/2009, 3:54 pm EST

And…. where is basket case???:(

JuleB | 5/20/2009, 4:42 pm EST

best show ive ever seen of them
but i think the fan sang welcome to paradise..not longview

KING OF WORDS | 5/20/2009, 5:45 pm EST

why do people say: This band still sucks… Never liked them and such….??? Why bother contribute with comments….??? Very objektive!?! They write great tunes though I like Bob Dylan, Buckley x 2, Bon Iver, Young, Cash, Pearl jam etc more…But I still can hear they’re fucking great…..Why bother, saying all this negative stuff. I wish people would respect artist for who they are…working hard 24/7 in a studio…..on the road and such……Do you really think they like you? YOU : saying this. So why write….Listen to your favourite bands and stay there.!

Gosi /Iceland | 5/20/2009, 5:54 pm EST

I think the reason for that they don’t play all of their great songs that are missing, for example Basket Case, Welcome To Paradise & Holiday, is that first of all they’ve just released a new album that includes 18 tracks, and before that they had, I think about 150 songs. And that’s a lot of songs to pick for playing.
Of course they want to play songs off their new album because, well… It’s their new album, and that’s what they’re presenting to the people.
That’s also why they have the show split in two, I believe
Just imagine what it’s like to be them, having to pick 8-10 songs from a range of 150..
Tough decision, I could imagine.
And although not all of their 150 songs are hits, a lot of them are, so..
Just think about that for a sec… It’s what I’m thinking :)

Steve | 5/20/2009, 7:03 pm EST

This show had such a high energy level that I swear the fans more exhausted than any of the members of Green Day. It was a perfect venue to thank their fans of many years. The webster hall show was even better. I was the fan who kissed Billie Joe on the mouth. I can’t wait to see them again.

Aaron | 5/20/2009, 11:43 pm EST

Nimrod never gets any love. “Uptight” and “Scattered” rock your houses.

Nimrod forever!

amy lynn | 5/21/2009, 1:57 am EST

Green day rocked the house at WH…and played She – my all time old-school fave – and Minority, Basket Case, Longview, St. Jimm\y, American Idiot, Jesus…, and a bunch of their new stuff. It was AMAZING – billie took my scarf and wore it on stage!

That show sounds like a blast, the new album is amazing. Really getting into “Before the Lobotomy” and “East Jesus Nowhere.” I can’t believe they played “Who Wrote Holden Caulfield?!” my favorite Green Day song! I hope they play it when I see them kick off their world tour July 3rd in Seattle!!

Alan | 5/21/2009, 6:09 am EST

This was my first Green Day show and I must say was amazing. These guys know how to rock and roll. These guys play as if electricity was running throught their veins. The other amazing thing these guys do is they connect with their fans. They started the show my shaking hands with all the fans in the front. If you love their music you must see them live.

Portal2009 | 5/22/2009, 1:19 pm EST

Green Day is a great band, New York is always a great concert, why aren’t the bands and their labels selling streaming links to concerts at ticket prices so fans can go online and watch in front of their expensive flat panels? This would counteract the $$’s taken out of the CD industry by music clubs with low monthly’s. Even a stationary cam front row center and no zooms would sell millions world wide, just park it on the band’s fan club page. Also, they could black out the state where the band is playing to make sure the live show is sold out.

Hey “Alan”-

If you’ve never heard of Greeen Day, you shouldn’t be on this website.

CR1ZZ | 5/25/2009, 5:27 pm EST

Also missing on top of Holiday, When I Come Around, St Jimmy and Basket Case is Warning, Walking Contradiction, Hitchin’ A Ride, Brain Stew, Wake Me Up When September Ends, Time Of Your Life and their cover of Working Class Hero!!
WTF! And Green Day DO NOT suck! They have a following from all age groups not just teenagers! They are the closest thing to living, breathing, PERFORMING PUNK ROCK! So go home who disagrees.

CR1ZZ | 5/25/2009, 5:31 pm EST

And Natasha dear, the actual artists never read these comments, not even the people high up at RS read these comments, only bloggers and maybe the RS building janitors.

CR1ZZ | 5/25/2009, 5:46 pm EST

What happened to my comment?

CR1ZZ | 5/25/2009, 5:48 pm EST

Oh it’s back now. Also Boulavard is missing from this set list.

Carmen | 5/29/2009, 12:59 am EST

only one song from “warning”? oh come on.

I’ve read through most of the comments I felt compelled to write:
John – most intelligent comment written here.

In My Opinion – That was the stupidest comment here. Learn a bit about what is really going on before writing again.

zp | 7/23/2009, 2:57 pm EST

in my opinion- thats great that you like to listen to that kind of music, but Green Day has done a phenominal job with a political topic for their albums. If you don’t like it, that’s fine, but you should try listening to it again, it’s amazing. Also, why should all bands have to follow what’s been planned out for them- i.e. “sex, drugs, and rock and roll”, it’s good to be different and that can make for amazing music. I’m sorry you can’t appreciate something different.
I recently saw them live, and they are, in my opinion, the greatest rock group of our time, well, of this century. Their lyrics are amazing, their music is amazing, they are amazing live. You can’t top it!
If you want to hear about sex, drugs and rock and roll, pick up a tabloid.

that’s all.
