Dave Matthews Blames Rolling Stone For Ruining Twitter

5/19/09, 1:48 pm EST

Followers of Dave Matthews’ Twitter may have realized recently that the once-loquacious rocker doesn’t seem to be updating his fans with 140-character posts anymore. Well, you can blame Rolling Stone for that. Matthews recently sat down with MTV’s the Vault, and revealed that since he was tweeting from his phone, he was unaware how large a following his Twitter had attracted.

It wasn’t until Rolling Stone’s “Rock Stars on Twitter” article in our U2 issue that Matthews learned he wasn’t the only famous rocker using the platform — and that posting things like “Do men wax their balls?” might get him teased. “They said something about me … and idiot boy humor and I was like, hey, that’s not the point of my Twitter,” Matthews tells MTV. “I got paranoid when I found out all these people were paying attention to it.”

“It’s fun to throw random things into the world,” Matthews told RS for our Twitter story. “Plus, it’s nice for an ignorant dude like me to have access to that many people.” Matthews filled his Twitter with observations like, “I wonder if snail farts smell if you’re close enough to the snail’s asshole to smell something so tiny?” and “I like to take fibre. I like liquid vitamens. Hello.” Unfortunately, the fun stopped on April 30th, the date of his last Tweet, on the subject of George W. Bush and Dick Cheney. The Rolling Stone Twitter, however, is still going strong.

Thankfully, Matthews will let his music speak for him when the Dave Matthews Band return with their new album Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King on June 2nd. The band will also hit the road all summer long, including gigs at San Francisco’s Outside Lands Festival and the Austin City Limits fest.

Too bad he stopped sending out Tweets.. kind of strange he got stage fright from a large Twitter audience.

Looking forward to seeing DMB at ACL fest here in Texas.

RollingStone has done their share of broadcasting interesting Twits(?) here and there, but it’s not like any of these are protected by a 4-digit password.

If you have a sketchy notion you may come off as a wanker by saying, there’s 2 choices-either keep it to yourself or broadcast it to the world.

If your own ego has led you to the point where you think through and type out the Snail’s Asshole Theory, it’s on you, regardless of joke or not.

These celebs and athletes obviously think they matter enough to broadcast their every move, so don’t get mad when journalists are simply doing their job with public info.

kid | 5/19/2009, 7:54 pm EST

i blame mtv for ruining RS

awful | 5/19/2009, 9:40 pm EST

i don’t know what’s more lame, Dave Matthews or Twitter….

DMBSongbyrd | 5/19/2009, 11:22 pm EST

love Dave more then Tweeter That ones things for sure

Bedrocker7 | 5/19/2009, 11:54 pm EST

Actually Rolling Stone has gotten pretty fucking lame for substituting musical coverage for politics. Sick of seeing Cheney/Bush bombs for 8+ years in a music mag. and I lean to the left!

hmm | 5/20/2009, 12:04 am EST

i blame dave matthews for aids… and the holocaust.

The Intl | 5/20/2009, 12:29 am EST

If I were Dave Matthews, I’d worry about other things.

Jack | 5/20/2009, 1:11 am EST

Dude, he’s not worrying about it. He talks candidly when asked a question. Get a clue.

Black Hole Sun | 5/20/2009, 2:51 am EST

Well then don’t twitter. Simple as that. The whole point of twittering IS to draw attention to yourself, not to be a recluse. Geez, I wonder if he even realized what Twitter is when he was using it.

Black Hole Sun | 5/20/2009, 2:54 am EST

Ditto Swingline, BTW.

Pat Offender | 5/20/2009, 11:33 am EST

Twitter represents the epitome of the self-absorption of modern culture. Get a friggin life, kids (and get off my lawn!) Although they may tell you otherwise, no one really cares WTF you do all day. No one’s really that into you. I pity the poor fools who take longer than the duration of their own adolescence to realize this fact of life.

ignacio | 5/20/2009, 11:43 am EST

WTF is twitter useful for?

cmanskar | 5/20/2009, 6:03 pm EST

hey hmm
go fuck off you stupid piece of shit i bet you like miley cyrus and boy george! twitter was awesome a few months ago and it really still is but it has got into hollywood way too much and now its just all about celebrities and not social networking and its best!

yup | 5/21/2009, 9:53 pm EST

what’s really crazy is that my grundle won’t stop sweating.

What's in common? | 5/21/2009, 10:03 pm EST

Both DMB and Rolling Stone magazine suck.

Jeremiah | 5/22/2009, 2:33 pm EST

I know it’s off point but I honestly think that RS has been spinning out of control for quite some time. It’s political coverage it quite bad. It doesn’t matter what your party happens to be. How often can you pay for a mag that hammers the same message every week? Republicans are satan. Democrats are heaven sent. I voted for Obama but for god’s sake! Please curb it!!

Stace | 5/22/2009, 2:41 pm EST

That’s funny, I blame Dave Matthews for ruining music. Douchebag.

T. | 5/22/2009, 2:43 pm EST

Dave Matthews should worry about hanging on to what’s left of his hair.

T. | 5/22/2009, 2:54 pm EST

That’s funny, I blame Dave Matthews for ruining music.

MK | 5/22/2009, 6:58 pm EST

Dave who now? I thought we were done with this towel-folding music.

Jack78 | 5/23/2009, 4:20 am EST

Twitter = vanity to the 100th power. It’s all self obsessed nonsense.

Jeff | 5/23/2009, 12:32 pm EST

Does anyone pay attention to RS or Dave Matthews? RS has been a bleeding heart, liberal rag since I was a kid in the 70’s and 80’s. And when it decides to cover music (every once in a while), the cover has Madonna, U2, Michael Jackson, Britney Spears, etc…so why would a real music fan want to buy it and/or read it?!?!

As for Dave Matthews, please, while the band may consist of very good musicians, who listens to this drivel?!?! The music is like scrapping fingernails down chalkboard. Along with the likes of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, REM and Pearl Jam, there isn’t another band out there that can make me change a station more quickly.

Jeff | 5/23/2009, 12:40 pm EST

Oh, and I forgot to add…only I barely know what Twitter is, but having read a couple articles to figure out what idiots of this country are talking about when they “tweet”, I learned quickly that only self-centered morons who lack real-life friends would use this inane service. And, Dave Matthews, give me a break…”I got paranoid when I found out all these people were paying attention to it.” Please, you knew very well how many sheep were following your pathetic diatribes…and you loved it. Fortunately for you, RS writes a dumb story on a dumb concept and you realize that you have an out…”I can spin this so it looks like I am against Twit, even though I secretly LOVE IT!” Your fans might be dumb enough to gobble up that excuse, but those of us with minds already knew you were a millionaire celebutante, and this little spin game that you just pulled off only reinforced our opinion.

stupid Jeff | 5/23/2009, 1:19 pm EST

Not only did you visit this “bleeding heart liberal rag”, you posted on it, you dork. Go watch that fat ass Rush Limbaugh.

Topher | 5/23/2009, 4:04 pm EST

Jeff, hate to tell you, but there are people that pay attention to RS and Dave Matthews, and they include you!

If you didn’t pay attention why would you be posting posts on RS.com’s message threads?

Not everyone likes Dave Matthews, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Pearl Jam and REM, but they sure are better than Nickelback and other crap you probably listen to.

And if you think they’re so liberal you can always go listen to Toby “let’s destroy the rest of the world so only the US is left” Keith.

Topher | 5/23/2009, 4:12 pm EST

We do need Twitter though because all the illiterate idiots out there need someway to communicate.=) For crying out loud, read a book or something!

Trevor | 5/24/2009, 12:53 am EST

DMB rocks and is a great band.. anyway RS really needs to start having articles that actually deal with music, instead of twitter or politics…..please

dmblynny | 5/24/2009, 2:12 am EST

I think that all of you so-called followers of music who talk ignorantly of Dave Matthews had better have seen them live at least once to judge… you have no idea what you are missing. Or what that band does for music, friendships, love, and life. If you haven’t seen them in person then you have NO room to say ANYTHING and need to SHUT THE FUCK UP. I dare you to take the plunge and witness a show, then come bitch on the Internet about them. Thanks and good day!

dmblynny | 5/24/2009, 2:15 am EST

Oops Toups, I double-posted. Needed to be said tho, and then some. I have at least three couples I know that have gotten married, one that’s engaged, and a bunch (including myself) who have found love because of the Dave Matthews Band. Not to mention the friends from not only the U.S. but all over the world that I have made thanks to them. It boils my blood to see the ignorance and/or hate of this band, specially if you have not taken the time to see a show.

Jeff | 5/24/2009, 4:09 pm EST

Oh Topher, Stupid Jeff, and Dmblynn (I’m lumping you together, however, I apologize Topher, you have far more brains than Stupid Jeff), you liberals really are so mindless, it is quite funny. Why is it that anytime ANYONE disagrees with you or people “like” you, you assume they must be some “evil” Republican? By the way, side note, but people like you are far more evil than most Republicans that I know.

Seriously, you live in such a sheltered world. Get out of your parent’s basements and put down the fake guitars and rock band games. Grow up and experience life as a responsible adult. Seriously, give it a try, it’s rewarding.

To begin with, the reason I was on RS is because I followed a link, not because I had a desire to go to RS. I personally (this is opinion) despise the concept of Twitter and the Spacebook-type sites and I made that clear in my earlier postings.

Reading some of the other comments on here, it is apparent that I’m not alone in my belief that RS still focuses on way too much outside of music. By the way, that’s not opinion, I read the comments…they exist…read them for yourself.

As for DMB, my opinion is that they suck. I’m not alone in that opinion. However, I do understand that there are some hippies out there who do find this music pleasurable. To each his/her own. Whatever floats your boat.

By the way, dmblynn, I have seen DMB live (they played at a festival I attended) and I indicated in one of my posts that the band is full of talented musicians (read my post before)…however, they DON’T do it for me.

As for your desire for me to enjoy Nickelback (not sure why you have this desire…are you stalking me?)…perhaps you didn’t read both of my posts. I was putting down RS’s coverage of the main, main, mainstream music. I think Nickelback falls into that category…along with your DMB. There is a reason that you read RS, the only thing that they cover musically (at least the last time I subscribed to it in the late 80’s) are bands like RHCP, Michael Jackson, REM, U2, DMB, Nickelback, etc. The people that read RS are big time followers that need guidance on the type of music that they are “supposed to” listen to.

I’m glad you found an instruction manual on how to listen to music. Keep it up, kids…keep it up.

Christian | 5/24/2009, 4:30 pm EST

To Dmblynny…I’ve seen Dave Matthews Band live (Tampa’s Ford Amphitheater” and it didn’t change my opinion him or his band. Not only do they whine constantly, but I’ll go as far as to say this is one of the bands that started this whole “Emo” phase….they’re that gay. So Dmblynny, you can go blow yourself as you obviously don’t understand what “good” music is.

Lee451 | 5/24/2009, 5:02 pm EST

Anyone who goes to celebrities and musical hasbeens for their philosophy and political education gets what he deserves. I always felt that DMB was not much deeper than a snailfart. How many times has he wrenched his neck trying to smell one?

Anonymous | 5/24/2009, 9:53 pm EST

o look at me, i only like underground music because its uncool to like mainstream bands. Hey guess what, theres a reason why DMB is mainstream, they’re better than 99% of the bands in the world. If you don’t like them that’s fine but don’t come on here bashing them for writing meaningful songs that inspire millions.

Jeff | 5/25/2009, 1:40 am EST

Hey Dope-nose Anonymous…most of us are not on here (as you say) bashing DMB for “writing meaningful songs”…that’s all in your head. Believe me, I don’t think he writes meaningful songs and I made that quite clear in my previous posts.

We are bashing because he uses Twitter, claims he doesn’t like crowds following him on Twitter (that’s a total lie…twitter is a self-centered service), and blames a liberal rag for ruining his Twitter experience.

Get a name and an education before you come and debate something far above your pay grade.

I acknowledge that he inspires millions…millions of sheep that need an instructional guide and brainwashing to help them in their path to music enjoyment. You passed that part…congrats.

Next time come back with a legit argument, if you are capable of comprehending the “meaningful” posts on here.

Jeff | 5/25/2009, 1:47 am EST

By the way, Dope-nose Anon…there’s a reason that bands like DMB are “mainstream”….independent record promoters.

I realize that you’re probably far too naive and unintelligent to understand the concept (the RS staff knows about the practice), but independent record promoters are the reason songs get played on the pop stations that you listen to in your parent’s car or your parent’s home. Independent record promotion is a modern form of pseudo-legal payola.

Jeff | 5/25/2009, 1:59 am EST

One final note, Anon. It has nothing to do with it being “uncool to like mainstream bands”…and everything to do with enjoying music that moves you. You enjoy music that independent music promoters force feed you…and many of us like to use our brains and feel music that is right for us.

Hey, if you enjoy the force feeding method, hats off to you. But, undertstand that it has nothing to do with cool or uncool, from my perspective. Again, that’s in your head…you’re the one concerned about perception, not me.

Jonathan Bailey | 5/25/2009, 7:20 pm EST

What a stupid article hahahha

Jeff | 5/26/2009, 12:02 am EST

bah humbug

Frederick | 5/26/2009, 12:04 am EST

don’t feed the troll…..

ChristianSucks | 5/26/2009, 12:34 am EST

LOL Please everyone read this Christian fella’s post. If the world crashes and burns, its because of people like him.

Trevor | 5/26/2009, 1:09 am EST

i think its funny that the jeff guy says he doesnt pay attention to RS but he has the most comments on here … also don’t just assume that every dmb fan is a hippy or liberal… im a huge dmb fan and i’m quite the conservative… just because one of my favorite artists says their political view doesnt mean i automatically agree with them.

Jeff | 5/26/2009, 10:53 pm EST

Trevor, I mentioned that I wound up on here from a link way outside of RS. I followed up on my original comments because others are replying and putting words in my mouth without comprehending my posts. That’s why I keep responding. Do you see me posting anywhere else on RS?

As soon as this discussion is finished, I’m outta here…and Frederick and the other Jeff “bah humbug” (that obviously wasn’t me…I’ve enjoyed schooling the kids on here) can go back to singing the praises of emo bands and Paris Hilton’s music career.

I'm popular! | 5/27/2009, 7:05 pm EST

RS should keep their noses out of politics, period. They’re neck-in-neck with Fox news when it comes to clear-cut bias. Remember when it was Hilary vs. Barack? RS trashed Hilary every chance they could get, like she was the devil. Saturday Night Live was more impartial then they were. I think it’s a brilliant thing for kids to be interested in the world around them, but if you want solid political coverage, go to cnn.com, where you’ll get the facts without the POV. RS is nothing more than a liberal soapbox, and this is coming from someone who’s as anti-Republican as you can get.

DOUCHE BAGS | 6/18/2009, 8:32 pm EST

Everyone on here who says Dave Matthews Band sucks is a fuckin idiot. I would love to hear the music you listen to. He is one of the only real artists left. And for the douche who said they like Nickelback, are you kidding me?? They are one of the worst bands of all time Chad Kroeger is horrible he should go jump off a building with spiderman!!!!

hahaha | 11/9/2009, 2:07 pm EST

If CNN isn’t a liberal soapbox then snail farts are to blame for ozone depletion…
