Rumors Fly About Star Performers as “American Idol” Finale Nears

5/18/09, 5:53 pm EST

Photo: Becker/FOX

Tomorrow night, the battle of Adam Lambert versus Kris Allen will keep millions of American Idol fans glued to their TVs (and dialing furiously). While a bunch of Web chatter has been devoted to which three songs the two finalists will sing, the Idol nation is also abuzz over rumors about which big-name stars will guest on Wednesday’s finale when the Season Eight winner is crowned. Here’s a guide separating confirmed performers from the pipe-dreams:

The Definites: Season Four winner Carrie Underwood, arguably the biggest star the show has ever produced, will perform her cover of Mötley Crüe’s “Home Sweet Home,” which has been used as this season’s farewell song. Jason Mraz confirmed on his Website that he will perform on the show.

The Definitely Maybes: According to the AP, the Black Eyed Peas, Cyndi Lauper, Lionel Richie, Keith Urban, Carlos Santana, Queen Latifah and last year’s Idol champ David Cook will all appear on the finale. CMT reports Urban will duet with Kris Allen, while Idol fansite MJ’s Big Blog says Lauper will sing with the equally rambunctious Alison Iraheta, who finished fourth this season.

The Maybes: We’re really hoping this rumor is true, especially since our sister mag first reported it: Kiss will appear on the Season Eight finale, US Weekly reports in their new issue. The make-up-heavy rockers would serve as a perfect backup band for Adam Lambert — who RS’s Rob Sheffield thinks single-handedly saved Idol — but apparently AI producers have other plans for their glam hero. In the most outlandish and fantastic rumor of the Season Eight finale, MJ’s Big Blog says that producers are trying to lure David Bowie, who has not performed live since 2006, to duet with Lambert on Wednesday night. Seems far-fetched, but what better way to announce your return to the stage than with a performance in front of millions of viewers.

The special guests and our new American Idol will be revealed on Wednesday’s finale. But first, come back tomorrow when Rob Sheffield live-blogs the performance show. And stay on top of all of all our Season Eight coverage in one spot.

Keith Urban with Kris Allen Slam Dunk!

mi | 5/18/2009, 6:10 pm EST

Please, Bowie – don’t do it!
Keep your dignity intact and don’t appear on this lame game show with cookie c utter karaoke singers.

You should be 1 but people must be better than take my advice its better

Jeff | 5/18/2009, 6:17 pm EST

Dude-Bowie performed with Bing Crosby (”Little Drummer Boy”)pon a Christmas Special and appeared on the Mike Douglas Show. He digs this kind of stuff. (I remember him telling Douglas be–Bowie–purchased his clothes at Sears.) Chillax, my brother.

MeredithNYC | 5/18/2009, 6:32 pm EST

show might be lame but would die to hear bowie and adam do something like “under pressure.” think it’s weird that Kris’ duet partner has been set for days and adam’s still up in the air. . . yea, i’m one of those adam lovers and proud of it. from the moment he stepped out and did

AI might be lame, but i would die to see adam and bowie do something like “under pressure.” (it’s weird that kris’ partner has been set for days but adam’s is still up in the air.) yea, i admit i’m one of those adam freaks; he just grabbed me with “Satisfaction” from day one and i just can’t shake him.

Cyndi Lauper, Lionel Richie, Queen Latifah, and a Motley Crue cover.

Rad.

Ade | 5/18/2009, 6:41 pm EST

Bowie and Adam doing Under Pressure. That would be great

kitty | 5/18/2009, 6:47 pm EST

This is a talent contest, anyone would be honored to sing with Adam, the most exciting talent to happen to the music industry in years! I watch AI like I’m witnessing the next coming of greats like Elvis and Michael Jackson. Who do you want to represent American talent? A mediocre Kris? Get with it America, watch the performances and be honest!

Imp | 5/18/2009, 6:51 pm EST

Hopefully, Bowie won’t lower himself to be on such a garbage show.

marianne isable | 5/18/2009, 6:58 pm EST

I like both Kris and ADam. But I do believe that Adam is a bigger talent. I am a 45 year old mom who NEVER watched AI before this season. Since day 1, I have been hooked on Adam. He has that elusive magnetic quality and he sings like a dream. I would LOVE to see him pair up with Bowie, or Kelley Clarkston. Their voices would sound cool together!

Olivia | 5/18/2009, 7:22 pm EST

Why can’t they ever mix it up a little more with the guest singers? Bring us Kristin Chenoweth, Idina Menzel, Celtic Woman! Not just all these contemporary pop, country, and rock people.

dlt | 5/18/2009, 7:52 pm EST

How’s David Bowie’s heart doing? (I’ve seen him play, seen him smoke cigarette after cigarette.) He had a stint put in not long ago. Maybe he’d do AI for–God forbid–future heart bypass surgery money. Would he be third worlded, stiffed, not paid what he was promised? I don’t think we have to worry about him; the man’s always had integrity.

It don’t matter that Bowie was in that Ben Stiller film, the one about models. It seems Stiller’s a Bowie fan, having used Bowie tunes in at least a couple of his movies. (Ever check out the Aquatic fim, Owen Wilson and Bill Murray?)

What does Bowie think about AI? “Do ya remember” Margaret Thatcher?

Filbert | 5/18/2009, 7:59 pm EST

I am so tired of listening to Adam scream that I could.

Mike in Seattle | 5/18/2009, 8:18 pm EST

Is it just me, or does anyone else hear that Glambert has the best falsetto since the master Roy Orbison?

jennifer toronto | 5/18/2009, 8:19 pm EST

Wow whata final Kris and Adam.
I have been watching Adam for a while, i love him he has the best voice out there and really connects to the audience.
I truley hope he win! But i have a feeling America isnt ready to have adam lambert as the next AI to risky he is much better than Kris but with Kris looks and voice all american boy thats want idol or the voters will vote for.
I will be watching tommorow night to hear adam sing and hope he sings well go adam!!!!

Anonymous | 5/18/2009, 8:26 pm EST

I would lose all respect for David Bowie if this turned out to be true.

sheila | 5/18/2009, 8:28 pm EST

Wow, Carrie really is tied to Idol’s apron strings. She’s on multiple times every year. Too bad she isn’t replaced with someone that isn’t beyond boring.

Good luck Kris and Adam!

ianaleah | 5/18/2009, 8:41 pm EST

Adam has a strong vocal range so it might be hard on the vocal cords if someone hasn’t sung in a while. I think Plant would be perfect, & he never released a Zep song to AI until Adam was named to be the singer. That would open some closed minds a wee bit.

Bowie Fan | 5/18/2009, 8:45 pm EST

Please, Bowie – please come and sing with Adam! We would love to see you, and you and Adam would be awesome together!!

mrc in costa mesa CA | 5/18/2009, 8:47 pm EST

Adam is mesmerizing, intoxicating, seduc tive, dazzaling, brillant, inspir ing, flawless,w strong stage charisma that dares you to look away. His singing is outstanding and he is an the extremely rare counter tenor, that can sing above a high C in full voice (strong, never weak like a falsetto) I want someone in the duet that can match that!

Yvonne | 5/18/2009, 8:54 pm EST

I am very hopeful that Adam will win this season although I am afraid that many of the Danny voters will vote for Kris. Yes, Kris does have a nice voice when you match him with the right song but ADAM is consistent no matter what he sings. Adam will make it in the music world no matter what happens but he certainly deserves to be selected as this years winner. Go Adam!!!!!!!!!!

adamsjerseygirl | 5/18/2009, 8:56 pm EST

Anyone who is asked to sing with Adam should consider it to be an honor…and if David Bowie comes out for this…he should thank Adam for bringing him back.

adamsjerseygirl | 5/18/2009, 8:58 pm EST

GO ADAM YOUR THE BEST.

VOTE FOR ADAM, VOTE FOR ADAM, VOTE, VOTE, VOTE FOR ADAM.

Jacob | 5/18/2009, 9:18 pm EST

I wonder if they are going to have Lionel singing with the men and Cyndi performing with the women? Anyway the real mystery is who are singing with the finalists?

CR1ZZ | 5/18/2009, 9:22 pm EST

ADAM IS THE BEST SINGER TO COME OUT OF AMERICA SINCE MJ!!!!!! If he does’nt win I am NEVER watching the show again! Bowie could be cool, it be alright if he announced another world tour to follow!

dlt | 5/18/2009, 9:23 pm EST

Carlos Santana’s guitar sings.

Roy Orbison didn’t sing w/ a falsetto, but Brian Wilson did. Vibrato is probably what you meant to say.

Tina | 5/18/2009, 9:24 pm EST

The thing is – Adam could perform with any of the singers or bands mentioned above and he’d be awesome. How many of those genres could Kris fit into and do well? Maybe a couple at most. And “mi”, you obviously haven’t been watching the same show the rest of us have this season. I’ve never bothered watching AI at all before, but Adam has grabbed my attention as the most exciting, creative artist to come along in ages! I hope he wins, because he truly deserves it.

dlt | 5/18/2009, 9:28 pm EST

Lambert has a nice high end, but not much of a range

bubbles | 5/18/2009, 9:48 pm EST

Yeah, you’re right. 16 1/2 notes isn’t much of a range.

Heather | 5/18/2009, 10:01 pm EST

Adam is what the worlds been missing….Super Mega Star…. Its been along time coming and I am so glad he turned up on AI this year..
He is everything and more of what an IDOL is…. Please vote for him cause noboby deserves this title more… NOBODY!!! Love Adam and I will buy anything he puts out, last person I could say this about was Micheal Jackson……
GOOOOOOOOOOOooo ooooooooooo Adam!!!

Anonymous | 5/18/2009, 10:04 pm EST

Why is it that people are always voting for Adam Lambert?! He’s an entertainer, not a singer….. He should be in America’s Got Talent and not in American Idol! Vote Kris instead!

hannah | 5/18/2009, 10:06 pm EST

i HATE the show, but if it brings bowie back, i’ll be FOREVER GRATEFUL!!!!!!!!!! PLEASE PLEASE MAKE THAT HAPPEN!!!!P L E A S E!!!

anonymous | 5/18/2009, 10:07 pm EST

It’s like the battle of the 2 davids again. Lambert is like Cook and Allen is like Archuleta. I didn’t like Cook… he was cocky.

amanda | 5/18/2009, 10:24 pm EST

Adam definintely deserves to win… i hope he does.
His is the album I would buy, and maybe Matt’s. I don’t like Kris’s singing.. he.. doesn’t sing. He yells. there are some moments that he does sing, but a lot of the times he yells.. i have to admit that he is cute.. But Adam has everything.. he is fairly good looking, he can dance, he has star power, he has stage presence, he has range, he has talent and he can definitely SING. It’s a singing contest- not “who is cuter” contest. Adam sings better than Kris. Simple.

Johnny | 5/18/2009, 10:25 pm EST

Keith Urban singing with Kris Allen will be a great show! Kris is the far better talent of the two.

Johnny | 5/18/2009, 10:27 pm EST

Keith Urban singing with Kris Allen will be a great show! Kris is by far better talent of the two, and Adam has that squirrley hair.

Laura | 5/18/2009, 10:31 pm EST

Adam is the best thing thats happened since Elvis or the Beatles!

Laura | 5/18/2009, 10:34 pm EST

Adam has more talent in his little black polished pinky than any other contestant thats ever been on Idol! Adam will not be the American Idol….he will be the World Idol!!

alice | 5/18/2009, 10:37 pm EST

As much as I think Adam deserves to win it is Kris who will take the crown because Danny votes will go to Kris for sure.
Adam made AI alive for me. Without him I would have not watched. I have not watched AI since Chris Daughtry was voted off. Adam is an entire package charismatic and confident.
Even in 2nd place, I believe Adam will be the more successful artiste of the 2 in the long run. Just like Chris D. Watch and see.

Arizona | 5/18/2009, 11:05 pm EST

Man oh man I’d love to hear Keith Urban by himself. And if some freaky chance they can get David Bowie up there to sing Under Pressure with Adam Lambert I would have a cow! That would rock the entire AI house. I’m surprised they said Cyndi Lauper is going to sing with Allison, she was 4th?! Does that mean Danny is going to sing with someone too? I thought this was down to Kris and Adam?

Anonymous | 5/18/2009, 11:16 pm EST

Also Britney Spears may be rumored to perform

Yvonne | 5/18/2009, 11:20 pm EST

Carrie is a great performer and has been loyal to Idol. I really think Kara should stay, she has definately helped the judges to do more coaching and I think the result was the contestants rose to the occasion and we one of the best years yet.

Chipitasgirl | 5/18/2009, 11:29 pm EST

Adam will not lose if you all vote. Don’t settle for second place to anyone…..He is in it to win it and that’s how it has to be. Adam has carried more votes than Danny and Kris combined so get those fingers in gear and speak your mind…..tomorrow night….ADAM FOR THE WIN

tyler | 5/18/2009, 11:31 pm EST

if chris wins, the whole show is set up. I have some ideas why fox would want chris to win. i think there were much better artists there this year than chris.

Chipitasgirl | 5/18/2009, 11:31 pm EST

Oh, one other thought. Extra tonight mentioned Britney Spears to be on the show….they really wouldn’t make Adam sing with her, would they??? OMGSH……saints preserve us

Anonymous | 5/18/2009, 11:38 pm EST

Kris sucks!

Anonymous | 5/18/2009, 11:40 pm EST

Keith Urban – good-looking. Kris – funny looking. What’s with his thin hair? Plus, he is short.

sandy mcdonough | 5/18/2009, 11:41 pm EST

Kris is short and funny looking and cannot sing worth a flip.

sandy mcdonough | 5/18/2009, 11:42 pm EST

greg | 5/18/2009, 11:44 pm EST

Adam Lambert will sing with David Bowie. Finally, we will get to experience “Under Pressure” and “Fame” with the new Freddie Mercury.

Mark my words, it will happen.

jamie lloyd | 5/18/2009, 11:45 pm EST

Danny was my favorite contestant this season and already has a record deal. Go Dan! I wish Kris and Adam well tomorrow night. My votes will go for Kris because he was my second choice after Danny.

scootmandu | 5/19/2009, 1:09 am EST

They are both extremely talented, but I prefer to listen to Kris. I guess I would rather hear James Taylor than Steve Perry, or John Mayer over Tyler.

I am in the music biz, but I downloaded 4 of Kris Allen’s songs to only 1 of Adam. “Mad World” is superb, but Allen has had some amazing cuts as well. Not just “Heartless”, but “To Make You Feel My Love” and “Falling Slowly” to name a couple more. You can’t hear the studio versions and tell me they are not exceptional.

Adam is incredibly talented and it would not bother me if he won. Those who think Kris is boring are unfairly slighting him. Those who call Adam a screamer and deride his sexual orientation are not to be taken seriously.

One more thing. This is not a competition about who has the best voice. If it was, Melinda Doolittle would not have been 3rd and Jennifer Hudson would not have been 6th.

Bottom line, no need to slam the guy you don’t like. It doesn’t help your cause. I more enjoy listening to Kris, but think Adam will be a star, as well.

Apples and oranges.

ARTWANKER | 5/19/2009, 1:11 am EST

Screw the show. Just get KISS to do a warm up set for David Bowie’s return to the stage, and all else will be forgotten.

Sondra | 5/19/2009, 1:41 am EST

Allison Iraheta is by far the most talented. I’m only watching the end because I’ve come this far. I hope Allison sings tomorrow.

bb | 5/19/2009, 1:50 am EST

Adam Lambart is so inventive, diverse, brilliant and gifted that he MUST be the next AI. He has hip-ified a show that was getting pretty sleepy and going nowhere new.

New is here with ADAM LAMBERT! VOTE!!!!

Laura | 5/19/2009, 2:15 am EST

I soooo hope Kris wins. Adam can sing but after awhile he gets a bit much when he screeches. Guess it just comes down to what you like. Kris has a quiet confidence with a hint of modesty which is refreshing where Adam appears to get a little more arrogant each week. Just my opinion.

meesh | 5/19/2009, 3:43 am EST

Oh…can’t wait to hear what Kris does. he surprises me and wows me. Adam, predictable to the point of eh, ok. Kris is more marketable across the board. Santana with Kris would be awesome too!

hollygotigers | 5/19/2009, 4:29 am EST

It doesn’t matter how the show goes down Wednesday night! The real winner of this season is Matt Giraud.

love david bowie | 5/19/2009, 6:46 am EST

message to david bowie — you have millions of fans salivating at the thought of seeing you perform on the finale show. we have missed seeing you, and hope everything has been going well with you…. please grace us with your beautiful and legendary presence on wednesday night… you are the only living legend left who would be a perfect pairing for adam lambert. will keep fingers crossed that you blow us away by appearing.

dlt | 5/19/2009, 7:13 am EST

Bowie probably won’t show. But what about Annie Lenox?

Citygal | 5/19/2009, 7:37 am EST

I have loved watching Kris Allen week after week. His creativity and musical talent are amazing. His voice is so beautiful. Definately has my votes!

londonlambertlover | 5/19/2009, 7:49 am EST

vote adam lambert!

Anonymous | 5/19/2009, 9:25 am EST

You guys DO realize that the votes are compltely meaningless, and the producers pick the winner, right?

Zuzu | 5/19/2009, 10:33 am EST

Did anyone notice that Kris Allen wasn’t mentioned as performing with anyone? Maybe there will be a mind-blowing sleepfest of a duet with Mraz? Lambert and Iruheta have been the best of this season.

Bill | 5/19/2009, 11:37 am EST

Can someone explain why they think that the winner of 2009 idol will be made by the producers and not by the votes of the viewers?

granny | 5/19/2009, 11:42 am EST

I am a grandmother who didn’t watch AI. Was flicking channels and heard Adam Lambert singing. From then on I watched. Who cares about anything other than the fact that he can really sing. Kris to me is boring – like watching grass grow. It should be Adam – but ….
what do the powers that be want?

AI FAN | 5/19/2009, 12:58 pm EST

I did not have a problem with Adam until I started reading the posts from the Adam fans. They bash Danny constantly and very ugly things have been said for no reason. The comment above where Chipitasgirl said Adam had more votes than Kris and Danny combined. That was not true. Danny was the front runner most of the season and had never been in the bottom three until last week. Last week Ryan said there was only a million votes between Kris and Adam. When the massive Danny votes go to Kris Adam will be second and you rabid Adam fans can thank yourselves for that. I wish them all luck. I think they are all good and none of them should endure the horrible comments made on some of these blogs. How about some love, not hate.

Simonez | 5/19/2009, 1:07 pm EST

Adam Must win this show because he is by far the better entertainer of the 2 finalists, Everyone else has, quite simply, been overshadowed by him this season and he is in a league of his own. He has not even missed a note let alone had a bad performance and anything but first place would be a travesty. The sweet thing is tho, that he will most definately have a career from this and I think that is justice in itself if he does not win. I for one, only watch AI because of Adam and I am a 43 yr old straight Englishman. And no, Im NOT Simon Cowell..

Steven | 5/19/2009, 1:17 pm EST

How is Carrie underwood the biggest star Idol has produced when Kelly Clarkson has outsold her by over 10 million albums world wide? Rolling Stone I’m curious what your continued problem is with giving Kelly the respect she deserves. You seem to be part of the propaganda machine of Idol which is funny considering in 2002 one of your main writers compared it to the pet rock and was sure it would fad out quickly.

Steven | 5/19/2009, 1:19 pm EST

P.S. danny is an f’ing tool and deserved to be bashed. He rode his wife’s corpse in the F3.

If Adam does’nt win it will affect American Idol’s rating next year. He is the clear winner now that Danny and Allison were voted off.

Kris is sincere and sings w/ his heart!!

Adam is the most exciting thing I have seen on TV in years. I absolutely think he is Elvis, Freddie Mercury and heaven rolled into one. I did not even want to want Idol this year and saw Adam and have been obsessed with the show ever since. He has to win tonight, or I think a lot of people will be turned off next year for sure. GOOD LUCK ADAM

This show is horrible and insipid beyond words.

roaring fashion | 5/19/2009, 9:07 pm EST

I do not understand why they force the singers to sing the songs that one of the Judges wrote?

Already the poor singers have had to endure singing the Judges choices (much of which were not the best choices) and then in the finals they have to sing the producer Simon Fuller choice AND to sing a song one of the Judges have written?

I mean c’mon. That is pure nonsense.

The last song for the finalists should be one that they wrote- each of them- perhaps with some help.

I do understand that one of the attractions is for the Judges to be able to self promote on the show- OK- fair enough- the finalists should sing the Judge written song on the following day- they should not have to be judged on singing a song they have no connection to!!

What a sad waste of opportunity for all involved- including the fans.

It is a sorry shame, and I do not think I will ever watch a show again in this format.

Adam I will watch. and a few others I hope. But not AI. sad and demented.

Joe | 5/19/2009, 9:52 pm EST

Steven:

Album sales do not mean everything.
even if you count album sales, kelly promotes herself outside of the united states while carrie does not at all.
in the us its different
kelly has sold just over 10 million with 4 albums while carrie is close to 10 million with just 2 albums

Carrie has more grammies, and more awards(average)
carrie even was just named ENTERTAINER OF THE YEAR!
3 time female vocalist of the year by the CMAS and ACMS
im not against kelly at all but carrie has definetley passed her up!
but kelly is awesome too!

Drz | 5/19/2009, 11:06 pm EST

This..this… ummmmm…this show really is trash…

mrtvabc | 5/19/2009, 11:29 pm EST

I’ve been in the music industry a long time.
Some of you would consider me an old fart, over the hill etc. but I’ve won a few grammys, got an attic full of gold and platinum records and as a songwriter/producer – have seen my share of talent come and go. I’m old enough to have met everyone from the entire Motown lineup (including MJ since he was 9) to the Stones, to Lady GaGa and Tupac. My point for all that is….
American Idol has almost single handedly put MUSIC back into popular culture. Rap and Hip Hop had infected the music industry so badly after Tupac’s death that it was hard to get anything else played. Was A.I. corny at first? Maybe so but it’s not the first time I’ve seen things put down by people who couldn’t see past what the media was telling them to see. Bob Dylan was a scandal, not to mention Elvis and the Beatles. Lionel Richie and the Commodores couldn’t get air play because they weren’t “Black” enough while Michael Bolton was told he sounded too Black for a White man. My point is – those of you putting down the A.I. forum – stop being so narrow minded. The show is simply a forum for singers to get exposure. The format has and will change as the audience expands. Rockers used to laugh at the show until Daughtry got a career out of it. Now Slash is making appearances. Point is, don’t turn into your parents. Don’t put down things just because they don’t fit into what you’ve always seen as “cool”. Everything changes. Keep up. No matter who you like, A.I. is a great place for unknowns to showcase. Look at the top 4. All different. All better than winners of previous years, whether you’re into their “genre” or not. My fear is that it’s getting too big and we’ll be back again where only artists similar to those the public already likes will get a shot. The masses are asses.

Kylie | 5/19/2009, 11:47 pm EST

I so much wanted to see both Adam and Kris in the finale. They are both talented in entirely different parameters. They are both marketable, but to different audiences. Whoever wins, will be worthy, and whoever comes in second, will be equally successful.

Idollover | 5/20/2009, 1:57 am EST

Adam is a star ……. but not my American Idol. I would never buy his album. Kris I would buy and listen to. Adam belongs on Broadway and with a rock band. He is like Steven Tyler …. I like Aerosmith, but the only song I have is the one from Armegeddon. Whereas, with Kris I could listen to Man in the Mirror or Ain’t no Sunshine and never get tired of it. I don’t think people who watch idol are rockers. Slash was way out of line to be a guest this year. He was only there for Adam. This year catered to Adam. That final song they both had to sing was horrid. Neither of them should be forced to release it as a single. Kris fits the AI mold, and I will vote for him. Adam has an incredible voice, but I would never buy an album. I liked Chris Daughtry, he was a rocker, but not hardcore like Adam. I have Daughtrey’s album, but I won’t buy Adam’s. I don’t like his kind of music. Voting for Kris ….. but Adam will be a star.

Banks Woman | 5/20/2009, 11:57 am EST

wow, mi, please, you obviously haven’t been to the average karaoke show to suggest that AI is like karaoke..>LOL…

And whomever suggested Bowie had a “STINT” put in – please, it’s STENT! STENT!

Would LOVE to see Bowie with Adam. And if Kris Allen wins, I’ll drop my rx for a sleep aid because all I’l have to do is play part of one of his renditions and I’ll be out cold.

COME ON! Adam is bringing life back into this sucky music biz – isn’t anyone else tired of Britney Spears?! GEESH.

Idollover,

WHAT YOU ARE SAYING IS YOU DON’T LIKE A PARTICULAR STYLE OF MUSIC, AND THAT IS ROCK AND ROLL. YOU THINK ADAM IS “TOO ROCK” AND YOU PREFER SCHMALTZ. WELL, NO ONE EVER SAID IDOL WAS A “SHCMALTZ MUSIC SHOW.” IT TYPICALLY DOESN’T ROCK, BUT WHY SHOULDN’T IT? YOU, HOWEVER, JUST DON’T LIKE ROCK – BUT I’M SORRY TO TELL YOU, ROCK IS NOT ONLY HERE TO STAY, IT JUST BROUGHT IDOL BACK FROM THE BRINK OF DEATH. ADAM MAY NOT BE YOUR CUP OF TEA, BUT SCHMALTZ ISN’T MINE.

BOWIE?!?! ROFLMAO! I honestly doubt that he would waste his time giving Idol legitimacy.

The band will be Kiss. I have it on good authority.

Adam belongs in Vegas. Kris belongs on a CD in everyone’s home. The judges should all be fired for promoting Adam from the beginning. He screams, he doesn’t sing. Kris is a true musician, and humble (imagine that), and a class act.

The format should change.

The climax in this years unusual top 4 lineup was a great and unusual surprise. However, the format of the show made things weaker after that.

If the producers of AI want to make a really good show, they may want to think about a few nips and tucks such as these possibilities:

1) The addition of the Duets in the Top 4 show was fabulous- it should apear again- see below.

2) (A)As soon as the top four are announced, the Judges could begin writing 2-3 short songs of different genres. That way later on down the road when the finale approaches they will already be halfway prepared- and the final two will not have to repeat a performance and they may even be able to choose one they feel more comfortable with.
(B) As soon as the Top four are selected, American Idol producers should put surveys on their website for a selection of 5 songs of slightly differing types for each of the top 4. you could make people who sign in the only ones to vote and they can only vote once- and you can keep the results to yourselves and the contestants until after the final. This way, each of the top 4 will be able to have a kind of reference for their free style choices when they get to the Top 3. This will make it more exciting for the viewers and more will watch. Moreover, when it comes to the final two- this survey should be used as a guide for one of the three songs in the final- see below for more on the final.

3) I think there should be two weeks for the final contestants, Judges, other idol contestants to prepare for the finales. If you want the final two contestants to actually perform an exciting, riveting performance of three songs each – allow them to actually have some time to make the arrangements and have a few runs.

4) I also think that the three songs of the final two should be a bit different:
A. One song should be the top viewer choice from the earlier survey (see 2B above). This will make the viewers more excited, more involved- the producer’s choice has always felt arbitrary and lessened many people’s excitement for the last shows over the years. Perhaps the producers can make a selection in the final 3 show if they feel it necessary to their enjoyment- or the producers can select the Duet for the final two- and if the final two somehow had sang a duet together in the top 4- make sre the duet is markedly different.

B. a second song could be one that the final two contestants wrote themselves- and the extra time for that with an extra week would be wonderful. Each of the final four in fact could begin to write songs for themselves in preparation. This is a vital addition as it can really exhibit the talent and skills of the artist and give the viewers a better understanding of who could be the next big star. This will again involve the viewers at a deeper level and raise the viewership.

C. See #1. Here I think it would be grand for the producer- or the viewers- or the contestants to select a final Duet for the final two- again see above- if the final two sang a duet together in the top 4 show, make sure the song choice is markedly different.

C. a fourth song could be added and sung the following day in the final results show- and this could be a song that the Judges wrote- again two different songs- much preferable. All the more reason for an extra week.

That will make for a much better show that will gain much more respect all around-

I have been in the industry and I know how much work goes into these kinds of showcases- and have learned what moves people the most- and in the end people who are moved turn into great customers and that is indeed the goal of the AI producers in the end is it not?

Yup….I agree with “The Man.” KISS will definitely be on the show.

I also find it interesting that on a site like Rolling Stone I am finding so many comments that attempt to label and denigrate the Talents of one of the newest and possibly one of the brighter talents we may have seen or will see in decades.

Kris Allen is a good artist as well- no doubt- and yes he is very different from Adam Lambert- and Yes there are those who may prefer his down home musical styling.

However, Adam Lambert will be a great Musical explorer- he has shown on internet videos and a little bit on the show (within the limits of American Idol) his large range of talent and skill in a number of Genres- and with being quite active in arranging himself- and sometimes borrowing and adapting innovative arrangements of different songs.
Yes, he often revealed his abilities in the higher ranges and register – perhaps because those talents and skills are rare and awe inspiring and he was sharp enough to sense he should show some of that. He was never out of tune. He also graced us with some softer songs and with some lower registers- but from a brief review of whatever of his previous work is out there- I can say that his lower registers and ranges are superb examples of a person who has been working very hard to finely hone his craft- and not anyone could hone the craft like he did- because he also came with a bit of natural talent.

Do not box up and label your artists before you have expanded your own minds and horizons to appreciate different forms of music- and someone who may not want to be labelled and may not want to only reveal one tiny aspect of the talent and skill they have.
Adam may have just helped millions of other artists who want to express themselves in a number of ways- himself perhaps being influenced by those rare gems of artists who paved the way for him- such as Bowie or RObert Plant (have any of you heard anything from his recent duet album?)- or even Bono and U2 who seem to reinvent themselves and surprise us all- and what about Dylan who started out like the Music Man and evolved into so many different things including a bit of pre-punk narcissism? Even the Michael Jackson of an earlier time forayed into some different types of musical style to great success.

Adam Lambert may be one of the most versatile artists we have seen in a while.

I for one would be very happy to see him, hear him- in whatever venue or genre he decides on at whatever time- in fact I hope to see and hear it all.

Perhaps I can get free tickets for life if I keep writing gushing bits like this? Yes?
