A pair of the biggest bands in rock, Radiohead and R.E.M., hit the studio recently to begin work on their next albums. While both groups are in the beginning stages of writing and recording, they offered up some early details in a series of interviews.

Radiohead have reconvened with longtime producer Nigel Godrich to start work on the follow-up of 2007’s In Rainbows. “It was very noisy and chaotic and really fun,” bassist Colin Greenwood told BBC’s 6 Music of the band’s recording session. “It’s at the stage where we’ve got the big Lego box out and we’ve tipped it out on the floor and we’re just looking at all the bits and thinking ‘What’s next?’ I’m very impressed and grateful for Nigel our producer and his ability to make it all sound vaguely plausible.”

Greenwood had some more vague details for NME.com, adding, “It’s really cool and everything is sounding great. It’s early days and it is a bit like having a scrapbook at the moment because everything is up in the air, but it’s good to be back in the studio.” Considering the recent report that the band was encouraged by their management to “split up” during the tumultuous recording of In Rainbows, we’re glad to hear that things thus far are going smoothly. While the band provided no specifics, one of the tracks that may get the studio treatment is “Super Collider,” which Radiohead premiered during concerts on their In Rainbows tour.

As for R.E.M., guitarist Peter Buck spoke to Pitchfork about the early stages of recording their follow-up to last year’s Accelerate. Buck and bassist Mike Mills recently entered a Portland, Oregon studio to record skeletal tracks that they written wrote touring behind their recent album in the hopes of making some music that would “excite Michael [Stipe] about getting inspired.” Unlike the stripped-down Accelerate, Buck says, “This record, I want it to be broader; I think Michael [Stipe] is into that. So there are some really pretty acoustic things, some really total noisy rock, and some kind of poppy stuff. It runs the gamut.” While Jackknife Lee will likely serve as producer again, Tucker Martine, who produced the Decemberists’ Hazards of Love helped Buck and Mills lay down the demos.

RADIOHEAD! WOOOOO!

awesome | 5/18/2009, 1:04 pm EST

can’t wait for the new Radiohead, should be amazing as always.

REM… meh

No surprises | 5/18/2009, 1:26 pm EST

I really hope this Radiohead album drops before the end of the year. I need new Radiohead..

ALEX | 5/18/2009, 1:34 pm EST

Thank God! The gap between “Thief” and “In Rainbows” was torture!

Blurg | 5/18/2009, 2:18 pm EST

I can’t wait for the almighty Radiohead to have their “Around the Sun” moment. Can’t. Wait.

Adrian | 5/18/2009, 2:34 pm EST

Radiohead have to be the worse, most depressing band in music today. Dire rubbish.

Can’t wait for the REM album.

Jim | 5/18/2009, 3:24 pm EST

Radiohead are depressing rubbish? Newsflash: It takes a bit of cerebral activity to understand and appreciate their music. So sorry, Adrian, but you must have missed out, mate

Anonymous | 5/18/2009, 3:54 pm EST

I’m a diehard fan of both Radiohead and R.E.M.

That being said, I don’t think R.E.M. have any decent music left in them anymore. All the hype surrounding Accelerate suggested it would be a return to greatness. It wasn’t.

They need Bill Berry to rejoin, and reunite with producer Scott Litt, if they want (artistic and commercial) success again, but it won’t happen.

Radiohead still have another few decent albums left in them. And I’m glad to hear they’re working with Nigel Godrich again. That’s a good thing.

JP | 5/18/2009, 4:10 pm EST

The only ceberal activity you need to do to enjoy Radiohead is to put you in your anal cavity and push play. Sorry, they are right when people say Radiohead is the most overrated crap band out there today. They write bland rock songs and give them an ambient rock/prog. rock arrangement to disguise how unremarkable they are.

However, an eclectic REM sounds really promising. Especially, after “Accelerate”, when they discover how to be themselves again.

Jim | 5/18/2009, 5:19 pm EST

See that, Adrian? Now you have someone else to hang out with while not being cerebral.

Radiohead isnt for everyone. People who like nice, safe pop music should stay far, far away. I like REM, but they’ve been done for years now. They havent done anything relevant since 1992. I respect them, but they’re safe(and boring)

Excited | 5/18/2009, 5:42 pm EST

I can’t wait! R.E.M.’s new direction sounds promising and I’m betting that Radiohead will outdo themselves once again.

gw | 5/18/2009, 7:45 pm EST

radiohead stuff good and things
rem poopoo

Drewdog21 | 5/18/2009, 8:21 pm EST

Peter Buck and Mike Mills are here in Portland?? I better go out and get their autographs.

Tara | 5/18/2009, 8:28 pm EST

Omg Rollingstone, Super Collider is not the name of the song.

accelerate | 5/18/2009, 8:34 pm EST

i thought accelerate was one of rem’s best, and by far the best album since automatic for the people – hope fully they retain this magic for another stellar album – as for radiohead, in rainbows was great but lets get another kid a – i loved their experimental trippy shit

T | 5/18/2009, 10:28 pm EST

Radiohead music is like fine art, it takes time to appreciate and not everybody will get it. So don’t waste your time and energy arguing with peeps who don’t get it.

David | 5/18/2009, 10:35 pm EST

I am longing for 80s REM, or at least something along the lines of New Adventures in Hi-Fi.

As for Radiohead, In Rainbows to me was a superb album. I cannot wait to see which direction they take this go around. Their albums are always full of surprises.

yo | 5/18/2009, 11:12 pm EST

NO ONE GIVES A CRAP ABOUT R.E.M. THEY HAVEN’T PUT OUT A GOOD RECORD IN 20 YEARS, NOBODY CARES!!!

Anon | 5/19/2009, 1:00 am EST

Radiohead and REM together are omninal.

Kentalope | 5/19/2009, 1:08 am EST

Can’t wait for both albums.

Don’t forget, R.E.M. put Radiohead on the fucking map. Not that that makes them better, just don’t forget it.

anon | 5/19/2009, 1:16 am EST

Radiohead can’t release an new album yet! Coldplay is still copying The Bends; give them a chance to catch up! You don’t want to confuse Chris Martin anymore than he already is!

anonymous | 5/19/2009, 1:32 am EST

Yes! More Radiohead! Hopefully they tour soon too.

beanicboy | 5/19/2009, 2:52 am EST

Always excited to hear new Radiohead, not as much with R.E.M, and both are literally my favorite bands for years. The thing with R.E.M., I think, has been the way Stipe’s aproached his vocals and lyrics the last few albums. He speak-sings alot now, especially on the slow songs, and some of his lyrics seem forced or not thought through. I think musically they’ve been tight, they just need the frontman to tighten up a little more too. Also, to those who say they haven’t released anything good since ‘92, you should give some of the other 90’s albums a few more spins with an open mind. Moster, New Adventures and Up are among my three favorite, even more than “Automatic”. I’m sure I’m not alone with that statement.

Microtone | 5/19/2009, 5:02 am EST

RADIOHEAD NEW ALBUM, I CAN’T WAIT!!!!

Mike | 5/19/2009, 6:25 am EST

God, I just HATE when the cooler-than-thou hipsters decide to pipe up. Radiohead are geniuses. They’re an amazing band, and a rarity today BECAUSE THEY DON’T CATER TO THE LISTENER. They make the music they want and that’s that. It would have been easy for them to just keep making OK Computer over and over again.

If REM wanted to “discover how to be themselves again”, I don’t think going electric would be the way to do that. Seems to me they were a folky little ban from Georgia.

jogger50xl | 5/19/2009, 8:42 am EST

REM is the best AMerican band of the past 30 years. Lets not forget that.

MB | 5/19/2009, 11:17 am EST

I like Radiohead a lot but I love REM! This and Pearl Jams new album may be the best year for rock music in a long time!

eatapeach10 | 5/19/2009, 11:37 am EST

Accelerate was the first REM album I enjoyed in a long, long time. I hope they keep with the “get in-get out” vibe from the studio. I believe over-production had haunted them for many, many year. Time will tell. Excited and looking forward!

Yay! | 5/19/2009, 1:36 pm EST

New Radiohead! Now I can listen to electronic beeps and moaning with no discernable musicality! I used to love Radiohead. OK Computer proved that you can still be innovative and musical at the same time. Since then, they’ve had some great moments (Knives Out, Everything in its Right Place etc) but there is so much shit on their that is unlistenable. I know people think that is ‘genius’ but anybody with a computer can program beats and throw on a ton of weird sounds; real creativity is using all that stuff in music. And NO I’m not talking about re-writing High and Dry or Creep; I’m talking about great musical ideas merged with innovative sonic ideas like they did on Paranoid Android. Remember when you first heard that? You were thinking what a GREAT SONG and what the fuck are all these new sounds on top of it!!?? Think of something along the lines of “Like Spinning Plates” or even “Body Snatchers” totally forgettable utter shit. I don’t think they should re-write anything; do what makes you happy but fuck put an effort into it if you want to make it a classic.

Nick Bridwell | 5/19/2009, 2:02 pm EST

I think its hilarious how people start arguing about which band should have a new CD. Both of these bands rock! R.E.M. is my favorite band ever, and I hope they put the same energy into the new album that Accelerate had. As far as Radiohead, I’m more a fan of the older stuff. However, In Rainbows had some fun stuff in it. I can’t wait to hear both!

JP | 5/19/2009, 2:08 pm EST

Thank you, Yay! Just because you drown your songs with alot of computer bleeps, drum loops, and other ambient sounds doesn’t make you a genius. When you use various sounds to elevate what you are trying to express, then you have something worth listening to.

The real “cooler-than-thou” hipsters are the one who mindlessly declare that everything that Radiohead does is genius. Other people can figure out a song is trash, regardless if it’s manufactured pop music or over-produced indie rock made to sound pretentious. Honestly, Radiohead fans are no better than obsessed Britney Spears fans. Both of them are oblivious to the obvious lack musical talent of their favorite artists.

dumbasses | 5/19/2009, 3:11 pm EST

Hey, “yay!” Saying Radiohead should change just because you don’t like thier direction is F***** stupid. If you don’t like them anymore, go listen to something else and spout your idiotic opinions to people who take what you say seriously.

“Thank you, Yay! Just because you drown your songs with alot of computer bleeps, drum loops, and other ambient sounds doesn’t make you a genius. When you use various sounds to elevate what you are trying to express, then you have something worth listening to.”

Which is exactly what Radiohead’s been doing since OK Computer. The electronica influences are fused with traditional alternative rock structure to create an orginial sound that complements Yorke’s fantastic lyrics. You’re just too stupid to get it. And those electronic sounds actually take skill to make. Radiohead has enough musical talent to support the creative endeavors of a medium sized country for the next 20 years. Isn’t there some “simple” music you should be listening to? Green Day’s coming out with a new album. Go check it out.

Jim | 5/19/2009, 3:28 pm EST

Its more than just computer bleeps and random sounds. I don’t accept everything that Radiohead does. I don’t follow them blindly to the point where they could fart into a microphone and I’d buy it. It’s about being different…making music that doesn’t follow the standard format that most people are conditioned to hearing.

I’d hate to use an already overused cliche, but its ART. Music is about expressing ones self, and if Radiohead express themselves in a manner that you don’t understand, thats fine, but don’t tear them apart for it. You make yourselves out to be a complete morons, not to menntion a bunch of tools. Just because some music isn’t in 4/4 safe mode with verse-chorus-verse doesn’t mean its not listenable. Open your mind to something other than what you heard on the latest Pop 40 charts.

Tara | 5/19/2009, 3:41 pm EST

JP, erm, seems to me that you’re acting like the know it all holier than thou hipster that you’re supposedly against and sick of. And if Radiohead is trash, why read this article, the comments and add a comment yourself? But that’s cool. When you’re a genius band like Radiohead, there will be polarizing opinions from everywhere. It just proves the band’s importance and impact. So hater, bring it…..

deano | 5/19/2009, 5:29 pm EST

I look forward to hearing where Radiohead can take their music after their last masterpiece. But R.E.M. really ain’t been worth keeping track of since their drummer went farming.

mim | 5/19/2009, 6:21 pm EST

Can’t wait for Radiohead’s new album. I’m sure it’s gonna be hailed as the best album of that year.

Ramona | 5/19/2009, 8:57 pm EST

I excited for both! Accelerate is a solid album, R.E.M’s best in a while, but I’m also glad there will be more diversity on their next one. As for Radiohead, In Rainbows, while not among my Radiohead favorites, still had a bunch of killer tracks. I’m glad both are already back in the studio and not taking countless years between albums.

Watch Dog | 5/22/2009, 3:11 pm EST

R.E.M. should have hung it up after “New Adventures” but I have to admit “Accelerate” had a couple of decent rockers on it. The production sucked, though, and I’m majorly disappointed that Jackknife was brought on board again. Dump the ProTools tricks, bro! And I don’t care that, “everybody’s doin’ it these days!” Screw that. At least give us some dymanic range this time, please…and some true, wide stereo sound would be nice, too. You know, let the band BREATHE. That’s all I’m sayin’….REM used to be the coolest alternative rock band in the world……used to be. Could be again, maybe.

Fo sho? | 5/27/2009, 10:36 pm EST

If Radiohead ever records a fart session mixed with some drum loops people will buy the record and call it a masterpiece.
Be honest with yourself, do you really enjoy Radiohead that much? Are they really that good?

Yes, Fo sho. | 8/5/2009, 1:50 pm EST

I’m sure their fart session will be one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever heard.

andrea | 8/14/2009, 6:29 pm EST

In the ´80s, REM was what Radiohead is today, underground and cool. In the ´90s, REM was battling U2 for the Biggest band in the world slot, and somewhere in the middle it seemed as though they just gave up and lost enthusiasm. It is true that they lost direction after Bill Berry’s departure, and honestly I doubt that they gan get their mojo back. Nevertheless,a band with such a wide palette of sounds can pull it off one more time. Accelerate was good, and it was proof that they still have it. I would really love it if that band resurrected one more time.

mrstevo | 8/25/2009, 6:49 pm EST

dear yay! – While I respect your opinion, it could really change your opinion to see them live. Often with radiohead what you hear on the releases are sometimes bizarre versions. “Spinning Plates” is one of my personal faves, but it’s mostly for the amazing piano work by Thom which isn’t prominent on ‘Amnesiac’ at all. Try ‘I Might be Wrong: live recordings’ or better yet go and see them if you get the opportunity. You will always walk away with a different opinion of many of their songs, I know I always do.
JP – while I won’t put Radiohead on a pedestal and declare everything they do to be genius, I well say that they certainly are innovative and creative songwriters. It is clear that you haven’t a clue what you are talking about. Please troll harder in the future.

i remember when out of time came out. i hated it, now i love it. i remember when monster came out. i hated it, now it’s my favorite rem record. i remember when reveal came out. i hated it. now i think it is beautiful. that’s just the way rem rolls. they are a very challenging listen. and they are still making fantastic records. that includes around the sun. sorry, but this around the sun bashing is lunacy. you can’t listen to side 2 of that record and tell me it’s crap. no way.

I like both bands and like to see new material come from both Radiohead and REM for years to come. I am more of a REM fan than Radiohead though. At this point I would say REM has about one album left in them because of their age, whats left on their current contract with Warner Brothers, and the fact that I think the band mates’ outside projects and interests have become their number one priority in their lives than the band itself now days. Which is understandable for a band that has been around for 3 decades now going onto their forth, (1980s, 90s, 2000s, 2010 beyond. I just hope their next album, I assuming last full pledge album, goes out with a bang. I like to hear the roar and static sound of Monster mixed in with the darker feel of New Adventures in HI-FI. I would also would love to see them produce on last good song that would actually get radio play. For most part just a top 20 or top 40 hit to remind their old fans that they still got what it takes to make radio worthy music at their age as well to open up younger music lessoners ears qaulity music of the previous decades. One other thought would be nice to see Bill Berry to come back and least play drums again with his other known musical skills for the next album.
