Conan O’Brien has recruited Pearl Jam for his first-ever episode as host of The Tonight Show on June 1st, the band revealed on their official Website. According to the post, Eddie Vedder and company will perform songs — plural theirs, not ours — from their upcoming studio album on O’Brien’s inaugural episode, which airs exactly two weeks from today. To quote the first comment on the story over at the Pearl Jam Webpage, “Holy shitballs! This is gonna be awesome!” Agreed. Added bonus: Will Ferrell, who led a star-studded sing-along of Billy Joel’s “Goodnight Saigon” on SNL, will also be on the episode.

The performance will be Pearl Jam’s first of what appears to be an increasingly busy summer for the Seattle quintet, with headlining dates already set for the Outside Lands and Austin City Limits festivals, as well as a pair of concerts scheduled in August for Chicago and Toronto with more dates on the way. Plus, the band is currently in an Atlanta studio — where bassist Jeff Ament was mugged — working on the follow-up to their 2006 self-titled album.

Conan O’Brien wrapped up his stint as host of Late Night in New York with a special performance by the White Stripes. O’Brien also spoke to Rolling Stone about his special relationship with Jack and Meg and his love of rock.

c | 5/19/2009, 7:24 am EST

Its the studio security camera. Paparazzi? That would be a pretty still arm holding that camera.

Alexvoz | 5/19/2009, 7:30 am EST

kilicopter, yes the Max Weinberg 7 will still be Conan’s house band. Max is going to split his duties between Conan and Springsteen’s tour. When he is doing Conan, his son will fill in for the E Street Band.

Mikey | 5/19/2009, 9:07 am EST

wow. Pearl Jam rules hard.

MB | 5/19/2009, 10:51 am EST

Powerful dope!

MisterHate | 5/19/2009, 12:19 pm EST

Now if they can just figure out a way to dump Ferrell it will be a really great show. He hasn’t been funny for a few years now. Blah.

Steve | 5/19/2009, 12:39 pm EST

Beautiful, I can’t bloody wait for the 1st airing. Here’s hoping they play ‘Spin the Black Circle’ or something a little more obscure from either ‘Vitology’ or ‘Ten’. As long as they choose to play something that’s raw and angry I’ll be happy. Bring on June 1st baby!

long tony | 5/19/2009, 12:45 pm EST

this is mad dope fresh news!! i’d write more, but i have a real bad case of the farts right now, and i had better find a toilet soon. pearl jam rules!! as does conan o’brien and his first show!

Great news and a great start for Conan’s debut! Psycheddddddd!

I love PJ and Ed for the integrity, staying true to fans, and their progressive yet true to roots approach. Bravo CBS!

jimbo | 5/19/2009, 5:22 pm EST

OK…NBC, ABC…whoever hosted Leno…never watched it prior, only the Daily Show and CONAN!!!!

jimbo | 5/19/2009, 5:28 pm EST

What a wonderful start…Ferril AND PJ…..long live your career Conan…love ya!

Flava Flave | 5/19/2009, 5:57 pm EST

Conan, Will Ferrell, Pearl Jam This reminds me of the episode in Seinfeld where George tries to combine food, tv, and sex.

boatman | 5/19/2009, 6:37 pm EST

I guess I have to watch but I don’t understand why Pearl Jam is doing this.

stapp | 5/19/2009, 6:48 pm EST

creed must have been unavailable…

God! | 5/19/2009, 6:57 pm EST

Why Conan? Why?

boston joe | 5/19/2009, 10:27 pm EST

It will be an awesome to hear Pearl Jam play for the Conan debut. A nice way to welcome the new host.

boston joe | 5/19/2009, 10:30 pm EST

It will be great to welcome the new host with an awesome band.

RIP James Brown | 5/20/2009, 12:09 am EST

Excellent decision. I was a bit disappointed in the White Stripes farewell performance, particularly since they played my least favorite of their songs “We are going to be friends”. For all the PJ fans hoping for tried and true, however, keep fishing; they will be playing songs “from their upcoming studio album”.

BAD IDEA | 5/20/2009, 2:05 am EST

Conan is more of a rocking White Stripes music then the depresive Pearl Jam outdated grunge, this doesn’t make any sense.

Anonymous | 5/20/2009, 2:34 am EST

HOLY SHITBALLS INDEED!!!! CAN’T WAIT FOR PJ!

pınar kayış | 5/20/2009, 9:02 am EST

This is so great I’ll watch them this is really good for me I will watch Eddie to be alive

thanks a lot

Speedo Steve-O (Scuba Steve) | 5/20/2009, 10:26 am EST

Pearl Jam makes me feel like a 15 year old Chatholic school boy being touched for the very first time by my priest while sipping on the wine. I AM SOOOOOO STOKED!

Conan Ballsucker33499 | 5/20/2009, 12:18 pm EST

I hope they play Santa Cruz from the xmas single.

WTF?????? | 5/20/2009, 12:47 pm EST

Why would any one want to have an under talented band such as Pearl Jam on thier show? I guess Bon Jovi was busy they had to go with a second pick. Who is Pearl Jam even when they were in they were never in. Speedo Steve-O your too way into PJ and wtf @ calling them PJ is that does not sound gay I dont know what does. All you Pearl Jam fans need lives and better sense in good music.

Anti fun band | 5/20/2009, 12:56 pm EST

Peral Jam at the Tonight Show, America will be thrilled, right?

Black Hole Sun | 5/20/2009, 1:49 pm EST

OK, that’s a weird choice of a musical guest for such an upbeat show… But Conan’s biggest demographic is 18-35(?), so I guess it makes sense in that respect to have a band that appeals to that age group.

TheCoz | 5/20/2009, 5:59 pm EST

Does anyone have better information about the release date of PJ’s new album? All I’ve heard is Fall 2009.

Also, I think this is their first mainstream TV appearance since SNL in 2006. Pretty excited for June 1.

Conan Ballsucker33499 | 5/20/2009, 6:29 pm EST

Hey WTF????? eat a big dick.

PJ rules. That’s right…I called them PJ.

Can’t wait for this…they’ve done it before, playing new stuff on a talk show. Remember when they played NOT FOR YOU on SNL…when they were promoting VS.? Wicked.

Bumblehawk | 5/20/2009, 11:44 pm EST

BAD IDEA.

The use of the word ‘grunge’ in reference to Pearl Jam is what’s outdated. They are just a good ol’ classic rock band. Nothing more, nothing less.

I now knowingly choose to resort to ‘lowest common denominator’ mode, like every other idiot on here. Fucking take your immature negativity and pointless commentary to a Jonas Brothers website, you pig fucker.

WTF????? | 5/21/2009, 1:29 pm EST

Pearl Jam, and all of thier fans are worthless, and are taking up all our fresh air on thier pointless lives.

Conan Ballsucker33499 | 5/21/2009, 5:27 pm EST

WTF????

why do you keep coming back to an article about PJ then? If you hate them so much? Is it cause you’re a douche?

Sober Blues | 5/21/2009, 10:31 pm EST

Eddie Vedder looks like Russell Crowe.

Spin_the_black_circle | 5/22/2009, 11:09 am EST

Finally something worth it on t.v. Pearl Jam is one of the greatest rock band ever that still is rolling around the world and making amazing music .

Eric | 5/22/2009, 2:37 pm EST

wtf is fucking stupid.you do NOT question legends

Bi-Polar Bear | 5/23/2009, 11:16 am EST

Omg, I so love PJ. This is going to be the best thing ever on T.V. I’m going to jack off to the performance. I want PJ to have a circle jerk around me.

pearl balls | 5/23/2009, 7:02 pm EST

they used to be good what happend?

WTF????? | 5/27/2009, 11:28 am EST

I recind all of my previous remarks. Bi-Polar bear it’s not cool to make comments like that.

ConanBallsucker you’re the coolest.

Anonymous | 5/29/2009, 1:38 am EST

To all you negative haters… you just wish you were as talented as Eddie. So there!!!!

Steve Trustey | 5/30/2009, 11:45 pm EST

Anybody who talks trash about Pearl Jam is just uneducated. I have no problem if you can’t stand their music. I have no problem if you can’t stand their annoying politic rants (I personally can’t stand them). THe bottom line is, they’ve passed the test of time as one of the musical greats, and can still rock out. So, relax people.

Steve Trustey | 5/30/2009, 11:50 pm EST

Just to clarify (as if anyone really gives a crap) when I say “I personally can’t stand them”, I mean PJ’s political rants…not the band. I love Pearl Jam.

sue | 6/1/2009, 10:50 am EST

feeling relief from my depression

Edward | 6/1/2009, 3:24 pm EST

Pearl Jam rocks! say one band more than 20 years old that still rocks and have a history and songs like pearl jam! If you said great bands like rolling stones, oasis or u2, well pearl jam is also there. PJ is legend. You may like it or not, but you cant denied the facts. Also Connan is a great comedian, very sarcastic and intelligent.

Conan | 6/1/2009, 11:55 pm EST

Pearl Jam sucks. Their lead singer looks like a mental patient.

jim jarmusch | 6/2/2009, 12:02 am EST

naysayers: pearl jam is the best band…& dont give me the “pearl jam…has beens”..just look the facts: 1.- they dont follow tendencies 2.- loyal fan base 3.-they are way better live act than all this mumble-jumble shit from today bands…for example:linkin park were stroked with the “imagine in cornice” live act..they thought linkin park was a pretty shitty live act & recognized their mediocre production values on their dvds after they saw that…can you figure out?… 3.- most pj albums sounds fresh today..brendan obrien brings crisp sound & top quality to pj..…plus pj is more diverse on their albums than most bands out there..actually they have ROCK ALBUMS…you can hear influence coming from the who to zeppelin to neil young to ramones in pj albums…you name it…no shit albums like these emo-new wave shit for kids..like green day or chemical romance 4.-they are more punk than most punk bands..just look at the ticketmaster law suit..as cameron crowe recalls today: “they lost but that was too punk for a popular band coming from that era….eddie vedder acted like a modern day version of joe strummer with an injection of iggy pop & neil young through his veins…pj really is the thing..theyre the personification of an old…great last rock band” 5.- dont even think to give me the “pearl jam vanished after ten”..yes…pj sells dropped because they stopped making less videos or trying too hard with the media or MTV.…but fuck..even with that situation…pj sold more than most rock bands from that era..including giants like smashing pumpkins, radiohead, green day, oasis & metallica…you figure out…true fucking facts…via RIAA,rolling stone, pitchfork, numerous polls, indy magazines, etc…so ps: a sincere “fuck you” to every single fan of the jonas bros, green day..or shit like that!..fucking period

Jennifer Romo | 6/2/2009, 12:54 am EST

Pearl Jam was good.

And I Love Conan!!!!

Jenny | 6/2/2009, 12:55 am EST

Pearl Jam was good.

Conan was awesome!!!
I love you conzey!!!

WTF?????? | 6/2/2009, 1:08 am EST

Vedder the arrogant prick had to jump on the drum stand so he wouldnt look short. HA!

Dick Cheney | 6/2/2009, 3:42 am EST

Pearl Jam sounded like crap tonight on Conan. They need to be sent to Guantanamo and waterboarded to find out where the old PJ went

Philo | 6/2/2009, 3:49 am EST

The bottom line is that they rocked! It was a great song, and once again Pearl Jam delivered an inspiring live performance. They are one of the best live bands period. What other band consistently puts on 2 and a half to 3 plus hour shows like they do?

jim jarmusch | 6/2/2009, 8:59 am EST

im sorry guys for all the mumble-jumble shit i wrote before…i was hopping for a better song from the band….fuck me….im not feeling the fixer..what the hell…what the fuck..what happened?…this does not sound like a brendan obrien-pearl jam collaboration…sounds like an everyday shitty new u2 song….no way…im not sure about this…if all or some of the new songs will be like this..fuck no…in that case i want adam kasper back on the radar….fuck you brendan o brien..i was hopping the real comeback of pearl jam from the vs-vitalogy-no code-yield days..but you turned my favorite band into a u2 cover band..fuck you!…ps: pj needs to release another song…cause i have lost all my faith in them cause of that fucking song…specially brendan…the guy was my hero but he just hit low…to me he’s as cheap as rob cavallo…2nd rate rock song…very shitty….thank god i got my new dylan & neil young album..those rock better!

Jizmoglobin | 6/2/2009, 2:20 pm EST

I so fucking love this band…..NOT! What the fuck is wrong with all you PJ fans…no direction in life, you all suck.

jim jarmusch | 6/2/2009, 8:07 pm EST

Jizmoglobin….dead on…pj is shit after this…fuck em…that was u2 on conan..not pj…fuck brendan obrien too!

ed ked | 6/2/2009, 11:34 pm EST

Their music? It’s regressive yahoo butt-rock frat boy music with vocals that might just as well be Michael Bolton as far as I’m concerned. I’ve loathed it viscerally since the first song of theirs I ever heard. The shitty influenced-by-PJ bands are really just icing on the cake. The PJ followers are orders of magnitude shittier, which must reflect on the source in some way.

Lefsetz | 6/3/2009, 5:38 pm EST

Instead of focusing on maximizing revenue, if only the band could focus on SONGS! Despite the carpet-bombing hype, the album still won’t sell much. More than the band’s recent opuses, but not much more. Because their music is WAY past its peak.

As for buying music at Target… Isn’t that like buying weed at Bed, Bath & Beyond? Or whips and chains at Toys R Us? All those indie stores stocked every iteration of the live show, and as payback…THEY GET FUCKED!

The problem isn’t the deal; the problem is the obfuscation. The problem is that this band claims to be straight with you, but they have never been.

The only reason PJ probably hired extras was because they didn’t want to deal with fan reaction once they realized they were filming a commercial for Target. But you are all so brainwashed and have the band so desperately tied into your identities you can’t see straight so you probably would have spun it until it was gold coming straight from Eddie’s ass.

Look, PJ never jammed econo. they didn’t eat PB&J for years, sleeping in dirty vans zigzagging across the country. they were signed immediately to Epic which was pretty much the major-est of all major labels. PJ has never been an indie band. did we all forget that the 2008 tour was sponsored in part by verizon? it was!

As for Cameron Crowe shooting the commercials…Sure, Cameron featured band members in his movie “Singles”, but when was the last time Cameron Crowe made a good flick? He’s sailing on fumes too. They deserve each other.

Pearl Jam, the people’s band…Utter fucking hogwash.

jim jarmusch | 6/3/2009, 9:35 pm EST

Lefsetz…althrough im a big fan of the band since vs…i dont put pj on a pedestal…and some fans must NOT DENY that…this sounds like a new u2-grenn day product..with bits of solos & good drums..but nothing more…overall it sucks…but Lefsetz…clearly youre a pj hater…and im not going to discuss that cause i have that kind of feelings towards some artists out there today too(tokyo hotel..chemical romance..lady gaga..anyone?..who are much, much worse than pj)and i kind of agree with you on the “past peak” thing…shows are great..but i must confess that i always keep finding myself listening the vs-yield era…the rest is pretty “meh”…and cameron crowe last great movie was almost famous (at least to me)…nothing more…as for the promotion of the new album…im a big follower of pj but i keep thinking myself…if they are so anti-stablishment then…why the hell are they doing conan? & giving rights to rock-star video game? (the game is cool but..putting the anti-corporate pj..doesnt sounds right)..they should be out there making free gigs & putting huge posters or sampling mp3’s…in order to support the new material…if later..doesnt work out in the sales department..then why should eddie care?..after all pj’s policy is not bitching about sales…(ticketmanster anyone?)..im pretty much dissapointed with this band…and this song was it for me…i will be fan…but at some degree…so if they keep releasing shit like this song…i wont buy it…im a fan..but fuck it..i respect myself…definitely…ps:i was listening into the wild..it was decent..& i think eddie should go solo…cause this band is turning into a u2 clone…fuck it…on other hand..kudos for bob dylan, robert plant, nick cave & neil young…they keep continuing as freash as 40 years before…i always keep returning to them when the shit hits the fence…

Miller | 6/4/2009, 12:28 am EST

I love PJ…

That performance sucked…

Very Disappointing.

Huber | 6/4/2009, 2:45 pm EST

I love Jealous people hating a good thing, If the band sucked they wouldnt survive 18 years!!!!!! They sell out 15,000 seat venues, so shut up and quit crying the blues, a band that survives more then 5 years and sells out the venues then they dont suck, the crying fools who hate Pearl Jam are clueless of what it takes to be a great band, Connan O’brien just said the other night, “I welcome you to the best rock band in the world” and I believe him. Jealousy is a serious disease, Just cause your lady is in love with Eddie dont be a hater!! Ed was working at a gas station before his voice was discovered you morons!

jim jarmusch | 6/4/2009, 10:13 pm EST

Huber: as i said im a big pj fan…but lets face it…eddie’s voice sucked…clearly the band was great live..as always…average sound…SHITTY SONG….its a fair review..and pal…conan didnt said “the best rock band in the world”..he said “ONE of the best rock bands in the world”….i know we love pj so much but stop sucking eddie’s dick for a while & get your shit straight..please…plus i think conan’s favourite band (quoting an uk interview from 2 years ago..plus hes in a music video of them actually)…are the white stripes…good band..not my favourite…..ps: best band in the world: nick cave & the bad seeds….to be fair…and my sister said to me that eddie just to be great lookin’…now she said to me that he looks like ron jeremy…lol

jim jarmusch | 6/4/2009, 10:44 pm EST

“a band that survives more then 5 years and sells out the venues then they dont suck”…oh fuck…are you fucking telling me that bands like poison, marilyn manson, papa roach, the offspring, korn, the backstreet boys (yes they had a little tour..i was told..and they sold out),..are good artists?..you gotta be fucking kidding me man…that they sell out venues doesnt mean its a great band…look at the stones…i can say that theyre good live..but their material from the eighties until now…just blows…im a big fan of them (specially the 1968-1973 era)..and i can swear to you..(and its not a big secret to everybody)…that the albums theyre releasing are just plain awful & mediocre at best….it doesnt makes sense that selling venues makes them great artists…then according to you they ARE the greatest cause they sold out more stadiums than anyone in this earth, everytime the stones show up..its like the fucking super bowl & bands like metallica & yes…pearl jam…opens for them..wtf?..they must be most big rock and roll band ever (sarcasm)…seriously…fuck that theory..and the biggest prove is the velvet underground..they never sell shit…neither sold out any venue…and i think they lasted like 4 years…but hey…they have influenced EVERYBODY..from david bowie to sonic youth…fucking period…lets face the facts dude

jim jarmusch | 6/5/2009, 1:30 am EST

fuck it…i was hopping for a better song from the band….fuck me….im not feeling it..what the hell…what the fuck..what happened?…this does not sound like a brendan obrien-pearl jam collaboration …im not sure about this…if all or some of the new songs will be like this..fuck no…in that case i want adam kasper back on the radar….fuck you brendan o brien..i was hoping the real comeback of pearl jam from the vs-vitalogy-no code-yield days with you behind the wheel as the master producer behind those pj masterpieces…but you turned my favorite band into a u2 cover band..fuck you!…pj needs to release another song…cause i have lost my faith in them cause of that fucking song…specially brendan…the guy was my hero but he just hit low…to me he’s as cheap as rob cavallo right now…2nd rate rock song…very shitty performance (im looking at you eddie..got tired already?…with 1 fucking song?)…althrough im a big fan of the band since vs…i dont put pj on a pedestal…and some fans must NOT DENY that…this sounds like a new u2-green day product..with bits of solos & good drums..but nothing more…overall it sucks…..why didn’t they came up with a slow tempo song a la “all those yesterdays” or “I am mine”..time to mature pj…specially if you cant clearly handle it (yes eddie..its you again).. but clearly there’s some pj haters here… and im not going to discuss that cause i have that kind of feelings towards some artists out there today too(tokyo hotel..chemical romance..lady gaga..anyone?..who are much, much worse than pj)… as for the promotion of the new album…im a big follower of pj “anti-this-that” kind of desitions but i keep thinking myself now:…if they are so anti-stablishment then…why the hell are they doing conan & giving rights to rock-star video game? the game is awesome & it could get some kids to know pj…but on the other side..putting the anti-corporate pj just doesnt sounds right..they should be out there making free gigs & putting huge posters or sampling mp3’s…in order to support the new material…if later..doesnt work out in the sales department..then why the fuck should eddie care?..after all part of pj’s policy is about NOT bitching about sales or money…(ticketmaster anyone?)..im pretty much dissapointed with this band…and this song was it for me…im still a fan but at some degree…so if they keep releasing shit like this song…i wont buy it…fuck it..i respect myself…definitely…ps:i was listening into the wild..it was decent..& i think eddie should go solo…cause this band is turning into a u2 cover band/clone…fuck it…on other hand..kudos for people like bob dylan, tom waits, robert plant, nick cave & neil young…they keep continuing as fresh as 40 years before…i always keep returning to them when the shit hits the fence…just like it did with this situation…lets wait & HOPE for pj’s recovery…

Eddie just needs to quit smoking.

Johnny O'kay | 9/9/2009, 1:12 am EST

I thought i liked this song.

Then i was at work yesterday and it comes on the radio. Afterwards, my co-worker tells me, mattr of fact like, “Johnny O, that song was g*y” …(I am editing that but it was a quote).

I now wish that i understood exactly what he meant by this, why his tone was so stern and why it was so obvious to him. There was no sense of bias.

perhaps my music taste has been corrupted. i am at a loss.
