Motley Crue, Slipknot, Alice in Chains Rattle the Heartland at Rock on the Range

5/18/09, 12:52 pm EST

Hard rock ruled the heartland this weekend as Mötley Crüe, Slipknot and Alice in Chains headlined Rock on the Range. For its third year, the Columbus festival drew 38 bands and sold a two-day total of 56,000 tickets, according to L.A.-based promoter Del Williams. A mixed crowd — college kids in baseball caps to bikers — partied under dreary skies on Saturday, and were energized and ready to toss the devil horns on sunny Sunday.

(Go behind the scenes at Rock on the Range with exclusive interviews — watch backstage chats with Mötley Crüe, Korn, Slipknot, Alice in Chains and Duff McKagan by clicking the video above.)

On day one, before he joined Alice in Chains for a haunting rendition of “Rooster,” Velvet Revolver’s Duff McKagan played a side stage, fronting his band Loaded. “The thing about Rock on the Range, I didn’t understand it until Velvet Revolver played here a couple years ago,” explained Duff backstage between appearances. “It’s in Columbus, a little college town — how big a festival can you have here? But people come here from Cleveland, Detroit, Toledo, Cincinnati, Indiana, West Virginia, from Kentucky, Tennessee. They all converge, and this is the big thing of the summer.”

(Check out photos of all the blistering hard-rock action from Rock on the Range.)

Saturday afternoon, Korn warmed up the main stage with a set of favorites and singles, playing as a sextet (with an additional touring guitarist and a programmer). In a black-and-white kilt, frontman Jonathan Davis led the band like Mel Gibson in Braveheart, beatboxing and emoting through the breakthrough hit “Freak on a Leash,” the nü-metal disco of “Got the Life,” the call-and-response “Y’all Want a Single” and more.

Alice in Chains returned in full force with new co-vocalist William DuVall (formerly of Comes With the Fall), opening the set with the murky anguish of “Rain When I Die.” Singer-guitarist Jerry Cantrell led the reconstituted Seattle quartet, who bulldozed through choice cuts like “Dam That River,” “Again” and “Man in the Box.” By the mesmerizing set-closer “Would?” the crowd was roaring approval. DuVall isn’t a clone of deceased singer Layne Staley, and though he didn’t hit the notes in quite the same way, he hit them all the right way.

The set was one of just two American summer shows before the band unveils a new album. Slated for September release, the as-yet-untitled disc has a strong buzz. After his set, McKagan called it “the best rock record he’s heard in the last 15 years.” Cantrell — who had nearly twice as many writing credits as the late, great Staley on previous albums — said the record represents the entire AIC spectrum from electric dynamics to unplugged angst. Though the group’s set didn’t feature any new material, DuVall hinted at a subtle new lyrical direction.

“I think there’s always been a little bit of death trip element [and a] survivor element,” said DuVall. “I think maybe the percentage has been a bit inverted [on the new album]. Where some of the records might have been more Scarface, this one is more Shawshank Redemption.”

Slipknot sent the crowd home with bruises. Fronting the nine-man metal squad, Corey “#8″ Taylor took the stage in a dead-skin mask and black blazer, like a charismatic corpse with an office job. Guitarists Mick “#7″ Thomson and Jim “#4″ Root shredded though maggot anthems like “Surfacing, ” “Wait and Bleed,” and “People=Shit,” and brought dark riffage with the new “Dead Memories” from All Hope Is Gone.

Sunday afternoon, the gray clouds were gone. Buckcherry singer Josh Todd took the main stage, torso covered in tattoos, bouncing on his toes and jabbing like and ex-con who’s slugged his way to a title fight. Todd rasped his way through songs about cocaine, redemption, volatile relationships and more cocaine. Fists pumping, the crowd shouted along to every word of the career-reviving “Crazy Bitch.”

At night, it was Crüe Time. When the legends launched their 2004 comeback tour, conventional wisdom said arena rock was dead; as it’s turned out, it was just resting. Teenagers and gray-haired bikers were ready to shout at the devil again. “I think the main reason why Mötley Crüe works is the crowd,” said singer Vince Neil backstage before the set. “The crowd is multiple generations of fans.”

With Crüe’s greatest-hits set, the Fourth of July arrived in May (the band hits the road in July for their Crü Fest 2, on which they will play Dr. Feelgood in its entirety). Neil opened the show whirling his microphone stand like he winding up the band. Tight as ever, the group skipped around its 27-years-and-counting catalog, playing under a shower of fireworks, clouds of smoke, bursts of fire. Representing Crüe’s 1981 debut, “Live Wire” rocked harder than ever. Last year’s single “Saints of Los Angeles” sounds way better live than on the radio. Following strip-club anthem “Girls Girls Girls” and bass showcase “Dr. Feelgood,” breakthrough ballad “Home Sweet Home” closed the night.

But before the Crüe said farewell, drummer Tommy Lee joined Mick Mars’ bluesy guitar solo as it took a quick stomp through Hendrix’s “Voodoo Child (Slight Return).” Midway through the set, the half-naked drummer left the drum kit, gave the crowd a bottle of Jägermeister as a victory toast, and christened Columbus Crew stadium “Mötley Crüe Fuckin’ Stadium.” Soccer or rock, the building’s two-story banner was still applicable: “Champions play here.”

I fell into free Saturday tickets and snatched up my girlfriend so we could go see Korn, whom we both still have crushes on from 14 years ago. They were amazing. Later we were wasted, sitting on top of Columbus, listening to Alice in Chains. It was the best day ever

gunn | 5/18/2009, 4:13 pm EST

R.O.T.R 09′ Was the most amazing line up i’ve ever seen!! Motley, Korn, Slipknot, Buckcherry,..not to mention newcomers Charm city devils on the Jager stage. But who’s dick did Blue october suk to get on the main stage?, when Static X was on the Jager stage?? CMON!!!!!!! But the overall weekend of Rock was unbelievable!!!

BA Concert | 5/18/2009, 6:59 pm EST

First off, Buckcherry ain’t that great…until you see them live, they rock that shit as for the rest of it best two days ive had in a damn long time 364 and coutin’ to next year!!! BTW Will Duvall is Layne(yea adrenaline shot turned him black)

Dude Man | 5/18/2009, 7:40 pm EST

I didn’t really pay attention to Buckcherry until Black Butterfly(I know critics didn’t like it, but I thought it was a good album). Then I listen to some of 15 and they actually are a really good rock band. I gald that in this decade a hard rock group can get crossover hit singles considering bubblegum and rap are taking over the charts. Still they should get better lyrics because they don’t need the songs about drugs and bad language, they’re too good for that.

Dude Man | 5/18/2009, 7:42 pm EST

Opps, meant glad.

Cheesecrop | 5/18/2009, 8:15 pm EST

Sounds like I missed an awesome show.

DORF | 5/18/2009, 9:22 pm EST

Other than Korn (whom I think suck), sounded like a great show.

Dude Man | 5/18/2009, 9:26 pm EST

Also I heard Buckcherry are going to do a cover my personal favorite song of all-time, Deep Purple’s “Highway Star” for Nascar. I hope it’s good.

Anonymous | 5/19/2009, 12:17 am EST

HAHAHA, Motley Crue, Buckcherry, Papa Roach all suck big time. The true Korn and Alice in Chains do not exist anymore.

Anonymous | 5/19/2009, 12:21 am EST

Another worthless tour with horrible bands. I wouldn’t pay 5 bucks to see any one of these bands perform, if you can call it that. Here’s an idea, instead of Cruefest they should call it Crapfest.

Lisa Jones | 5/19/2009, 1:17 am EST

Rock on the Range kicks ass….

I absolutely loved every single minute, even when i had to work the crowd surfers; i took a beer bottle to head or two….it’s all good! they are plastic…

who cares if you don’t like a couple of bands…watch another one…they have three stages…best festival ever!!

Rock on the Range is a state of mind and people coming together to have good times and good fun!!

Woodstock is nothing compared to this Festival!

I am one of the parents who took my daughters 17 and 19 and they knew all the words to Motley Crue and Alice In Chains as much as I did….that is because that is what they heard all their life!

It is amazing to see the generations of people who come together.

Ours is a family affair and we enjoy every damn second of it!!

Peace
^__^

I have been to countless tours and concerts over the years and always have had a blast, but this was the worst i have ever been to. total garbage. bad venue, poor sound, shit weather, and pricing that made me wish i had spent my money elsewhere. thats the truth

p!$$poortour | 5/19/2009, 1:22 am EST

i had looked forward to seeing most of these bands live, very few came through for me. thanks to slipknot, aic, a7x, atreyu, and uhhhhh yeah thats about it

gnrbuckeye | 5/19/2009, 9:04 am EST

Unbelievable is the only word that can properly describe ROR 09. Alice In Chains, Slipknot, A7X, The Crue, Shinedown, and Korn were ridiculous.

One thing I am certain of after this weekends festivities is that Alice in Chains is back. Wait till you hear their new lead singer. He sounds exactly like Layne Staley!

EPT | 5/19/2009, 10:28 am EST

I hope someone who has the organizational ability to set tour dates sees this. My wife and I moved to El Paso, Texas from New Orleans to kick drugs and all the concerts that come hee play indoors. There are over 3 million people in El Paso/Juarez and we need Cruefest!! To come and straighten out these confused, haven’t seen the power of real rock ‘n roll to transform a community, We need Cruefest because it is the only touring festival with the integrity to show people the transformative power of music. Please Cruefest-book a date in the fuckin’Sun Bowl or New Mexico State University stadium. It will be a guaranteed sellout and bring rock ‘n roll to a part of America inundiated with Cartel Wars, the most prolific serial kiler in history, scarce jobs, and scared people. Please bring Cruefest-it’s our hope.
Respectfully,
tattooed , diseased, and needin’ a fix (I want rock n’ roll not heroin),
Man whom music (especially “The Heroin Diaries” soundtrack) helped end a 20 year smack habit-and I’m one of thousands here

LOL | 5/19/2009, 12:44 pm EST

LOL, Papa Roach, Buckcherry, Slipknot, Motley Crue, Korn, and Avenged Sevenfold. What the hell happened to rock music? At least AiC and Pearl Jam are still around. But damn. Rock music SUCKS nowadays.

The Virgin Marcus | 5/19/2009, 3:24 pm EST

“The greatest trick the devil ever played was convincing the world that Vince Neil can sing.” – Kaiser Soze (sort of)

Seriously people. Vince has the most disparate talent to success ratio in the history of popular culture. I know this didn’t matter to us in the ’80’s when image was more important than talent, but I really thought that we had progressed as a society and as music consumers.

When you are the worst lead singer on a bill that features Slipknot and Korn, you have really achieved something…

something horrifying.

BLAKE | 5/19/2009, 3:56 pm EST

CRUE RULES………

Motley Marie | 5/19/2009, 10:14 pm EST

The line up was great. If you could have actually watched the performances, it would have been better. Too many idiots throwing beer bottles and shoes for me. I never thought I would see so many injured people at a concert. It really wasn’t worth being nearly crushed to death, but I would do anything to see a Crue show. They are true artists and always have the best stage show. Buck Cherry was awesome as always, too. It’s unfortunate college age people don’t know how to enjoy concerts without nearly killing each other in the process. The only band I actually got to watch that I wasn’t familiar with before was Flyleaf. Outstanding is all I can say! I can’t wait to buy their latest album.

Imp | 5/19/2009, 10:59 pm EST

“This didn’t matter in the 80’s when image was more important than talent” That’s really funny. That is 100 times more true now than the 80’s ever dreamed.

Scrunchy | 5/20/2009, 12:32 am EST

bring on the new Chains!!!

RockinMom | 5/20/2009, 1:17 am EST

ROTR is the shit. period. How often do you get to see 35 bands play live with thousands of people??? This was my first time going and I won’t miss another one. To me it was unbelievable. It was a mix of classic, new, metal, and soft rock all in the same venue. Motley Crue was definately and awesome finale.

RockinMom | 5/20/2009, 1:22 am EST

Oh yeah, beers are $8 a piece, water $4 and cheapest food was $4 hotdog. They don’t let you leave, so if planning to go, save about 500 bucks not counting tickets~LOL

PattyRN | 5/20/2009, 11:16 am EST

I went there to see KoRn, Shinedown, Avenged Sevenfold and Static-X. If this isn’t your kind of music…then duhhhh, your not going to enjoy the festival. As far as venues go, Crew Stadium is awesome. The bands had short setlists which sort of sucked and the push at the front of the stage was bad. I have only one thing to say…..If you are a person who weighs in excess of 200lbs……what the hell are you doing body surfing?????

Jared | 5/20/2009, 11:31 am EST

the college kids there give us a bad name. I’ve been to probably near 1000 concerts, no joke. when you have a bunch of people like that though, that have never been to a show before, that happens. Blue October isn’t that great, but they have more pop-radio hits than Static-X. That’s what it comes down to. Charm City Devils impressed me. It was like Classic Rock modernized (and done right). Anyone catch my dudes in Burn Halo? James Hart may have toned his music down over the years, but he knows how to put on a show. They tore up the Jager stage at 12:45 on Sunday. Overall, another great festival.

SHOOBA | 5/20/2009, 12:32 pm EST

TO THE PEOPLE BITCHING ABOUT ROTR: YOU DUMB ASSES PAYED TO GO SEE IT. WHY COMPLAIN ABOUT SOMETHING YOU HAVE NO CONTROL OVER, NEXT TIME DONT BUY A TICKET, LEAVE SOME FOR THE PEOPLE WHO ENJOYED IT. ME PERSONALLY, I LOVED EVERY MINUTE I WAS THERE. AND FOR YOU TO SAY IT SUCKED, YOU F**KING SUCK!!!

t*nelly | 5/20/2009, 1:18 pm EST

rotr 09….words cant describe it!!!! the best bday gift ever!!! a7x, slipknot, saliva, motley crue killed the show!!! even tho i had stadium seating it still ROCKED!!! cant wait till next year cuz of course its on my bday again!!! and plus the prices…..u will run into that any concert u go too!!! peace!

Ken | 5/20/2009, 2:17 pm EST

Virgin Marcus-Just what is that ratio, smart guy? How in the hell can you put music in math terms? Wrap some more tape around your glasses Poindexter, and leave music to people who like to enjoy it, plain and simple, without having it analyzed by someone who actually thinks that image was more important to music in the 80’s than it is now.

Maze | 5/20/2009, 3:09 pm EST

I was there and Papa Roach was not. And the pit was not a true pit. Just a bunch of drunken rednecks, punk jocks and snatchy cheerleaders who weren’t true fans to the music that was playing. Anyone in a pit who takes pride in taking the crowd down, is a loser.

I went there once. It was fun with my friends. I could care if I go again. And Alice in Chains did not co-headline. It was Motley Crue (Sunday) and Slipknot (Saturday). You should correct your article.

alex | 5/20/2009, 3:27 pm EST

r.o.t.r. kicked ass, came from california to see it, slipknot,korn,a.i.c.,motley,st atic_x,and a bunch of up n comeing bands, hope to do it again next year

Heather | 5/20/2009, 5:23 pm EST

I don’t care what anyone else says ROCK ON THE RANGE 2009 completely kicked ass!!! Korn, A7X, Motley Crue, Slipknot, and Alice in Chains kicked ass!!!!!!!!!!! If you didn’t like it then don’t go next year and let the rest of us enjoy a damn good time

slipknot freak | 5/20/2009, 8:09 pm EST

u all complain about rednecks..at the concert u all r just mad cause u gotta bad spot the show was fucking amazing on the railing up front i know…so if u did like it fuck off quit bitchin….slipknot,a7x and korn kicked ass.

joe Brown | 5/20/2009, 8:43 pm EST

Tt was my first time at ROTR and I had a blast, the crowd for KoRn and Slipknot was off the hook. Alice in Chains new singer William Duvall did an amazing job and the rest of the show was great as well… and people who bitch should just stay home !!!

shadowofnick | 5/20/2009, 11:42 pm EST

Great fuckin show!
Best i’ve seen in a while.
I think Static X should definately have been on the main stage… although it was funny to see people tearing down a pine tree to have more room closer to the stage to see them.
Motley Crue… amazing.
I had seen Slipknot, Alice In Chains, and Korn before and they did not disappoint this time.
I was definately not a fan of Blue October… they should have been on the tiny jager stage, but it gave me time to get some food and strong drink, lol.
Actually the band I was really blown away by was Halestorm. They put on a great show and even had a drum solo where the drummer did his thing and the rest of the band brought out floor toms and played along with him.
Early in the first day it sounded like they had some issues with the speakers for the main stage but it was worked out before the bigger bands at the end of the night.
It was my girlfriend’s first concert ever and I had her crowd surfing to Slipknot and Avenged Sevenfold! Avenged was great as well. They played mostly their older songs and had the crowd going crazy… sadly my Oakleys didn’t survive their set, lol.

jake | 5/21/2009, 1:20 am EST

The crowd at this show was unbelievable. I have never seen so much violence in one place in my life. It was beautiful. I don’t know how people didn’t get killed during a7x’s set. If you took all the people in the front 60 rows and a7x and sent them all to Iraq… the war would have been over years ago.

Carol A. Given | 5/21/2009, 2:14 am EST

Awsome show,,,As always Korn,Flyleaf and Slipknot kicked ass..although some of the people was just there for the party, come on if yoiu are not there for the music get the —–out..no room for wanna bes in metal

Watch Dog | 5/22/2009, 3:21 pm EST

I just got one real question: Did Eric Moore and The Godz play? Machines….machines….machin es……You guys are funny. This is why I left Cowtown and moved to the Left Coast. Columbus ain’t got nothin’ on Coachella!

AIC Fan | 5/22/2009, 9:35 pm EST

ROTR….is the best weekend ever..sucks its only once a year…it was my first concert.. i had douts about AIC new singer but shit not to shabby..can’t wait till next slipknot put on a damn good show…If you never been to ROTR GO you will love it all.

people=shi@ | 5/25/2009, 5:11 pm EST

Well to the hater ass fans on the tour maybe you should have stayed home and played your moby and pearl jam cd’s and not test again something you cant handle.metal isnt dead and will be around long after where gone. Its all about the rock/metal and the booze and fine ass women. The lifestyle isnt for everyone. If you cant hack then kick yourself out of the show girly’s.Im sure thiers a walker in your future or a chore to make some allowance to do.Metal/rock have alot of haters but hell we could all get ghetto out and be idiots like hip hop bull shi@.

Holly | 5/26/2009, 2:13 am EST

Yeah…I’ll agree with the post on a7x…I was two people from the gate, broke my nose on a crowd surfers foot…got out to the side…put it back in place and pushed my way back through haha

Definately amazed at how rough the crowd was but eh…it’s to be expected..

ROCK ON THE RANGE!!! Been there all three years now and will be there every year there is Rock on the Range!! The show was totally bleeping awesome, and i loved every bruise I came home with!!

RockinMom | 5/28/2009, 10:30 am EST

Saturdays lineup was awesome! I was happy to see some of us ‘older rockers’ still alive. Took my daughter, her 1st concert, she loved it! Too many crazy LARGE crowd surfers tho. And what the heck was Static X doing on Jager stage?? Definately an experience.

Emilyy. | 5/28/2009, 2:45 pm EST

yeah talk about a great showw!
it was deffintaly amazing and slipknot was fricken amazing i got lots of burises but it was worth it :D
and the funny thing was i came out of the crowd after slipknot was done and these two guys were like how did she make it threw and i was like cuz im hardcore!

Elliott | 5/30/2009, 8:41 am EST

Burt McCracken hit me in the face with a water bottle after they were done with their set and just throwing stuff to the audience…I wasn’t even mad. In fact, it made my day!!
