Fall Out Boy’s Patrick Stump Performs Prince, “Folie” Songs

5/18/09, 11:28 am EST

Fall Out Boy frontman and Rolling Stone reviews critic Patrick Stump recently stopped by our New York offices to perform a trio of songs, including an incredible acoustic version of Prince’s 1979 hit “I Wanna Be Your Lover.” Stump manages to capture the same vocal heights as the Purple One’s famed falsetto on the track, which was the first major hit of Prince’s career after it appeared on his 1979 self-titled album. Stump also performed raw, intimate renditions of a pair of Folie a Deux singles — “America’s Suitehearts” and “What A Catch, Donnie,” both of which can be viewed after the jump.

As Rock Daily reported last week, Fall Out Boy will next join Blink-182 when the punk trio’s reunion tour hits the road this summer. “When we started our band, we were like, ‘Man, that’d be so awesome to meet Blink-182,’” bassist Pete Wentz told Rock Daily. “It’s been a great stretch of headlining tours the last few years, but there’s something interesting about opening up for bands when you have to rope the audience in.” Click here for the Blink tour dates.

Say what you will about FOB, but this guy’s Prince cover warrants respect! White boy gets down!

Alex | 5/18/2009, 1:35 pm EST

I wonder if Prince’s gonna sue for this one.

Bambi | 5/18/2009, 5:30 pm EST

i’m glad i don’t listen to fall out boy.

Becca | 5/18/2009, 10:03 pm EST

Patrick Stump is amazing. You guys might not like Pete Wentz, but Patrick has so much talent it’s unbelievable.

“I Wanna Be Your Lover.”?? Now this guy have my respect!

strawberry man | 5/19/2009, 10:08 am EST

yeah man. Stump is the ONLY talented member of fall out boy

unroastbeef | 5/19/2009, 2:34 pm EST

Stump MAKES fall out boy. PERIOD!…he would do well solo too

Anonymous | 5/19/2009, 2:46 pm EST

Patrick isn’t the only talented member of Fall Out Boy, Joe and Andy are incredibly talented as well. FOB’s only weak talent link is Pete Wentz.

This seriously shows that there is a lack of Patrick love out there…I mean, I love Pete and everything but Patrick definitely deserves way more love and attention than Pete…whether he wants it or not

what a shitty voice.

Annonymous | 5/20/2009, 1:53 pm EST

Noooooo STOP IT RIGHT NOW PAT….you can’t cover Prince….your voice is shit!…

DH | 5/20/2009, 9:07 pm EST

Stump really needs the bombast of the rest of the band. These stripped down songs do not do him any justice.

Don't cover Prince. | 5/21/2009, 12:54 am EST

That was not a cover, that was an bad impersonation. Great song, poor choice for a cover.

Not hating on Stump, but these videos only seem to highlight his weaknesses.

Reid | 5/21/2009, 1:02 am EST

Ouch. This is a strong argument for how week Fall Out Boy’s songwriting is. Stump is a great vocalist but these aren’t MELODIES people. They’re vocal acrobatics with nothing behind them. Speaking of “Donnie,” check into some Donnie Hathaway records for some tasteful vocal riffing from a legend. Stump needs to take these videos down ASAP. Sorry, brother.

jckltm | 5/21/2009, 10:59 am EST

RS wanted Patrick Stump to sing…hence the videos…
hence they must think he’s pretty damn awesome

jlt | 5/21/2009, 11:08 am EST

I think its funny how people bash Patrick and/or FOB.
I mean…do those who hate on them have top selling records? or have millions and millions of fans who most would do just about anything to see them?
They may not be someone’s ideal band or whatever…but i think they are pretty damn awesome and I think Patrick has a bad ass voice…very soulful for their type of music

seth | 5/22/2009, 9:32 am EST

“wanna be the only one you come for” I always loved that line!

Anyway, not bad. I would suggest he do it in his own voice, but otherwise not bad

hayley | 5/23/2009, 10:04 am EST

uggggh.
ok all you patrick haters can ya please stop?
patrick is suuuuper amazing.
ok i though he shouldve done the prince song in his own voice…..a few octaves lower….but hey. it was better then all of you could do.
and what a catch and americas suitehearts were BADASS. dude. amazing.

the amorist | 5/31/2009, 8:42 am EST

Woah.

Someone that can even attempt Prince, and pull it off that well, is pretty damn good.

He’s got a sweet voice, you’ve got to admit it.

Lily | 6/3/2009, 11:38 pm EST

i knew he had a good voice but, he pulled off prince… my conclusion to that is WHOAH. i love patrick (not in an obsessive way) i just think hes one of those people who truly gets music.

justme | 6/16/2009, 2:25 am EST

Patrick is the band! he rocks and I love prince too!

GT5 | 11/2/2009, 5:24 pm EST

Wow he is so talented and maybe its me but every time he sings what a catch i feel like its one of his personel experiences just a lot of emotion…maybe its just me but when he sings it, it gives me chills
