Coldplay Kick Off New “Viva la Vida” Tour With Grand Gestures

Confetti paper butterflies. Giant yellow beach balls (dropped during “Yellow” — get it?). Super high-definition live video. Friday’s opening night of the last leg of Coldplay’s Viva La Vida tour in West Palm Beach was an Olympics-esque spectacle, complete with five orbs dangling over the band’s heads that served as screens for more state-of-the-art camera work.

(Check out photos of Chris Martin and Co.’s “Vida” spectacle, straight from the tour opener.)

Coldplay are playing big sheds for this summer stretch — about 16,000 fans filled the Cruzan Amphitheater — and, despite their sad songs, grand gestures suit them. The quartet, dressed in their Sgt. Pepperesque jackets, want nothing more than to please. That’s why they twice made excursions to small ancillary stages in the middle of the venue, to show their “respect for the lawn,” as Chris Martin said in one of his many shiny, hammy comments (someone hire him a script doctor). He then choreographed the audience to hold up their lighted cell phones and perform what he called “the first ever Mexican phone wave,” before leading the band into an acoustic cover of the Monkees’ “I’m a Believer.” Believe.

One doesn’t go to a Coldplay show expecting shock rock or even anything more mildly challenging than having to commiserate with Martin over his bad haircut. With Martin’s piano riffs and falsetto croon, the band stops just shy of being alt-rock’s answer to smooth jazz. Their music is almost unnervingly tight; Jon Buckland’s Edge-walking leads rang out in the kind of perfect stage mix you rarely get at shed shows. They played long — almost two hours — and they played well, hitting all the bright spots of their catalog (though changing the song selection little from their earlier U.S. leg). “The Scientist” has been moved to an encore position, Will Champion’s high-hat fillip creating just the right dramatic tension. The butterflies rained down during “Lovers in Japan.” Gwyneth Paltrow was standing center front (not out in the lawn), singing along with hubby Martin.

Given how eager Coldplay are to please, they made a serious misstep with the distribution of free CDs that they touted would be available after the show. A few people handed out woefully insufficient quantities of LeftRightLeftRightLeft at only one of Cruzan’s exits, causing Coldplay’s heretofore-happy, polite fans to get ugly. (A more raucous crowd would have rioted or at least trampled someone for good measure.) Presumably, the band will have this sorted out at future dates — or they’ll just decide everyone who cares will have downloaded LRLRL already and give up on the idea (which Martin claimed as the band’s own original concept, even though Prince did it years ago).

Pete Yorn played before Coldplay, performing angsty ballads from his recent CD Back and Fourth. While Coldplay are practiced entertainers who know how to play to every corner, Yorn and his five-piece band with their earnest, indie songs sounded dwarfed by the venue. It’s nothing that a million or so bucks in audio and video technology and a movie-star wife couldn’t cure.

Seeing them in Cincy on the 4th! Can’t wait! :) Their shows are incredible!!!!

Most bitter review ever? | 5/18/2009, 12:44 pm EST

I think… yes.

Jacob | 5/18/2009, 12:53 pm EST

Are they not playing “Speed of Sound”? Damn. I love Coldplay, but I’m not a huge fan of their new direction, and Brian Eno.

versedandvested | 5/18/2009, 12:56 pm EST

never in my life have I done such a 180 on an artist/band. I still swear by the first two LP’s, bur now, between the last two albums and this gaudy live schtick, they’re losing me…fast.

although I’m sure the other billion drones who love this shit will tell me how crazy I am.

Kevin | 5/18/2009, 1:15 pm EST

I’m not gonna say you’re crazy, cause that’s your opinion. But how are we drones for liking what we like? I’m sure there’s a band you love alot. Does that make you a drone too?

Kevin | 5/18/2009, 2:07 pm EST

why?

Bob Saget | 5/18/2009, 2:25 pm EST

I hate to admit it but I listen to Coldplay. It goes against everything I believe to be good music but they make some catchy songs. Still, I would NEVER see them live. Has anyone seen the video of Lost with Jayz? Chris Martin is such an &@@hole. Seriously watch the whole clip its amazing. He thinks he’s god, and he’s definitely not. Plus when you wear “costumes” during a show and you’re not a female singer it’s kind of creepy.

ThatMusicGuy77 | 5/18/2009, 2:29 pm EST

What is up with all this haterade Rolling Stone is spewing on bands that play actual music, you know the kind with discernable melodies and good production? Also see: review of Depeche Mode’s new album. This magazine is becoming Blender-Lite. Ugh.

Caroline | 5/18/2009, 3:02 pm EST

Shut up all you unsuccessful idiots. Coldplay is ridiculously inspirational as well as groundbreaking, and few compare.

If you’ve listened to all their stuff and been to their concerts and are still talking like this, there is definitely something wrong with you.

And let me tell you, claim your own opinion, that’s quite alright, but…um let’s see..here’s coldplay’s success…aaanndd HERE’S YOURS.

Get serious. Silence is your only claim to wisdom.

Kevin | 5/18/2009, 3:26 pm EST

Hey bob. What clip were YOU watching?!
So, having fun and moving around and getting into the song means you’re God?
And I don’t understand. WHAT MAKES IT BAD MUSIC?! I’m an unashamed Coldplay lover, and I’m sick of people who say they’re “too cool” for Coldplay and hate on them, when they’ve probably never heard an entire song or album and have NEVER been to a show. Listen to a whole album and go to a show, THEN come back and tell me you hate them! And do you how many bands have had uniforms? COUNTLESS!!! But I guess you hate the Beatles too right? Sorry, I guess you’re too cool to like anything that is successful, people love, and means something!

Caroline | 5/18/2009, 3:48 pm EST

Go kevin!

Nick | 5/18/2009, 3:51 pm EST

Sorry, Mr. Martin, but the Bono jr. act does not suit you.

When Bono performs, you can tell he’s just being natural. When Chris Martin prances around on stage and attempts to fake some “charisma” it feels painfully forced.

Kevin | 5/18/2009, 4:00 pm EST

“fake charisma”?! You’ve never been to one of their shows in your life

CBSouthie | 5/18/2009, 5:35 pm EST

Poor band mates. Do you thing the rest of the band is like “Uh, Chris, are we going to wear the outfits for the tour?”

Nick | 5/18/2009, 5:42 pm EST

I’m not paying jacked up ticket prices to watch their crap. It would be the most expensive nap I have ever taken. Corporate bands like them let Ticketmaster or Live Nation run wild.

Indeed | 5/18/2009, 9:35 pm EST

Yay, let them jack somebody else’s shit to make another buck.

Hooray for people listening to what MTV tells them to. As Aaron Barrett said, “The radio plays what they want you to hear”. Aaron, will never be in an issue of Rolling Stone and will most certainly not rob a riff or few from someone else because he is creatively lacking.

Anybody who likes Coldplay, may as well admit they only listen to the most mainstream music possible, because they are sellout personified.

dfez | 5/18/2009, 11:33 pm EST

coldplay suck. chris martin dances like a crapped a dead animal out of his bung hole. they try to rip off U2 but haven’t got any skills. coldplay are not original and they are not innovative. it’s all been done before – and much better. every night chris asks gwenie if he measures up to bono, but she just smiles and doesn’t say anything…because she’s listening to U2’s 4th Masterpiece, ‘No Line On The Horizon’.

If you lame CP fans are tired of getting tea bagged by these loser hacks you should give Kings of Leon a try.

Caroline | 5/19/2009, 12:46 am EST

Dfez,
I’m a huge fan of KOL too. I don’t understand how you don’t also love coldplay. They share so many of the same kick-ass elements. Don’t shun stuff just because it’s mainstream, often times that means it’s GOOD, hence a lot of people wanna listen to it, hence it’s mainstream. Also, the entire BAND isn’t mainstream, really just a few songs like Viva la Vida which really I feel isn’t their best song although the radio sure thought so. They are still my favorite band though and I think you need to stop fearing predictability. You can like something that somebody else does every once in a while you know.

ro | 5/19/2009, 1:03 am EST

totally love coldplay.to th eones that hate, drop dead

ro | 5/19/2009, 1:04 am EST

absolutely love coldplay.to the ones that hate, shut up and keep it to yourselves

Heather | 5/19/2009, 1:54 am EST

I just want to see Pete Yorn.

TheSilverOrb | 5/19/2009, 3:32 am EST

“Anybody who likes Coldplay, may as well admit they only listen to the most mainstream music possible, because they are sellout personified” – I think people who are so close-minded that they dismiss good music as ‘too mainstream’ are the real sellouts. The popularity doesn’t decrease the quality. And, for the record, I like Coldplay as much as I do Late Of The Pier, TV On The Radio, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Air, The Raveonettes etc., the fact that their music is popular doesn’t really influence whether or not I listen to them

name | 5/19/2009, 5:02 am EST

“Coldplay stole my songs!!”

that became fun to say after recent news…

Keith Talent | 5/19/2009, 5:34 am EST

It’s not for everyone by any means, but if you like a bit of arena ready indie with all the trimmings, Coldplay deliver that in spades. Its not going to change the world, but its a step or three up from a lot of the elevator muzak that passes for radio friendly these days. Just leave them be if you’re not into it, put on something else. “Viva la Vida…” is better than “X&Y”, no question-but its a shame that the band have feel that they have to ape the U2 career arc as opposed to trying something different.

If only Chris Martin had listened to “Fear of Music” and “Ocean Rain” as opposed to “The Joshua Tree” and “Little Creatures”…There is still hope for them to try and evolve further yet.

dfez | 5/19/2009, 7:21 am EST

lol, ‘TV On The Radio, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Air, The Raveonettes’ those bands aren’t really that “indie” anymore. in fact they’ve become giants in today’s weak market. TV On The Toilet make good studio albums but suck live. And, the YYY’s, well Karen O is hot but that new album sounds like No Doubt which is why they came back too. Coldplay are alt-elevator music. They have nothing of value to say. nothing is real or sincere. it’s all sugar. now if Brian Eno could convince the band to kick Chris Martin out all together – then they might grow a pair of balls and make music for a purpose other than tampon commercials.

NIN | 5/19/2009, 2:47 pm EST

Kings of Leon suck just as much as Coldplay and are just as big of sellouts. Want to hear real music? Listen to NIN, Radiohead, Bright Eyes, DOOM, etc.

Anonymous | 5/19/2009, 3:56 pm EST

Parachutes = Masterpiece. Perfection.

A Rush Of Blood To The Head = 1/2 excellent. 1/2 crap

X&Y = 90% crap / 10% good

Viva La Vida = Overproduced wankery. 100% overrated crap.

Coldplay, I’m done with you.

Coldplay | 5/19/2009, 4:33 pm EST

More like HotPoopPlay

Yusef&Satch | 5/19/2009, 5:19 pm EST

We caught them in Birmingham last night. Not the biggest fans, but we thought it was a pretty good show.

Caroline | 5/19/2009, 7:36 pm EST

I really wanna know in detail what everyone’s problem is with the last album.
Ok, so viva la vida was overplayed.
but you really dont like songs like “death and all of his friends”
and “glass of water”? have you listened to them in full?

Kevin | 5/19/2009, 11:24 pm EST

Anyone who hates Coldplay, hasn’t actually listened to them. Therefore what they say is invalid. It’s not Coldplay’s fault they get played on the radio alot (which I really think they don’t! you wanna talk about overplayed? Beyonce?!) And since when is a singer who dances and jumps around and acts crazy a bad thing? Have you SEEN Thom Yorke?! To the people who took the time to click on this article and write a comment: you’re spending too much time on a band you claim to hate ;) I think secretly you love them like everyone else! ;)

T | 5/20/2009, 12:18 am EST

I love Coldplay and I honestly don’t care what anyone else says.

If it’s one thing I’ve learned in life it’s that every time you achieve success there is always going to be someone to try and break you down. It could be because they are jealous or just plain don’t like you, either way your success fuels anger…simple. They would much rather see you fail so they could have a good laugh than see you succeed…it’s pathetic.

I as a person try not to dwell on things i don’t like. I just move on because it’s not worth my time…some of you should learn that.

I can’t wait for the tour!!!!!

dfez | 5/20/2009, 12:19 am EST

lol, well you obviously haven’t heard radiohead to make a comment like that. or beyonce. radiohead can actually play their instruments and beyonce can actually sing…and okay, she looks hot. so, maybe coldplay should dump chris and get beyonce? nah, they still suck.

The only way moldplay could get me interested at this point is to make a video of hot soccer moms making out.

dfez | 5/20/2009, 10:23 am EST

Radiohead can actually play their instruments? True but they’ve been letting computers do that for them since 1997. Beyonce can sing but so can Chris Martin. If you don’t like Coldplay fine, but you can’t deny the musicality of songs like “Lovers in Japan”, “Yellow”, “Politik”, or “Talk”. I’ll take that over “Like Spinning Plates” or any other computer generated Nigel Godrich piece of shit that dominates every radiohead album since OK Computer. “Bodysnatchers” is one of the biggest turds they’ve ever produced. I have every radiohead album because each one has a highlight or two but most of it is unlistenable unless you eat a bag of mushrooms.

Marco | 5/20/2009, 10:34 am EST

I have had the good fortune of seeing both U2 and Coldplay up front and personal. I myself have been a big fan of U2 for years but seeing Coldplay do their thing live was in one word “extraordinary”. Nothing about the show felt “forced”. While Chris Martin and Bono are two distinct personalities I have to be honest and disagree with many people here. I think mr. Martin is an amazing showman who does not have to live up to Bono. He is his own man with his own talents.

David | 5/20/2009, 4:22 pm EST

These guys work hard, deliver enjoyable tunes that they can actually perform well in concert, and somehow make an arena seem intimate. Anyone comparing them negatively to U2 should listen to the praise Bono heaps on the band.

dfez | 5/20/2009, 7:32 pm EST

yeah, Bono just called Martin a ‘WANKER’. sounds like praise to me. And i agree coldplay are extraordinary. they can barely play their instruments and songs and yet people pay money to see them. the only reason why his performance didn’t seem forced to you Marco is because Chris had you bend over so many times already.

You’re no U2 fan.

Pam | 5/21/2009, 6:28 am EST

When Bono called Chris Martin a “wanker” he was only joking of course. I don´t think that Bono has such problems with Coldplay as some of you. In one interview I heard him saying that Coldplay have done something other bands haven´t done in 20 years. I mean, I agree with some of you that Chris Martin´s movements on stage often look a little unnatural and forced and in some moments I also think that he tries a little too hard to be like Bono. I wish he could concentrate more on his own personality. U2´s influence on Coldplay is undeniable concerning some atmospheric soundscapes and moods. But it would be too easy to regard them as some kind of cheap second-hand U2. Of course they´ve also added some own sounds to the musical landscape like some excellent piano parts for instance.

All musicians have their favourite bands and in my view it´s just a natural human reaction to include influences from favourite bands into the music. As long as an influence doesn´t turn into a total copy that´s okay. How about bands like Keane or One Republic? They all could be put into the same box, too. Anybody remembers the Simple Minds? I don´t know if they still make records, I haven´t heard of them a very long time. But back in the 80s they were big contemporaries of U2 and some songs sounded VERY similar to them. In their music there were also those melodramatic moments and big gestures. Was there the same hate going on?
Anyway, I´m a U2 fan and I don´t have any problem with Coldplay.

Lee | 5/21/2009, 5:55 pm EST

What’s wrong with Radiohead using electronic elements? Bands should try to look forward instead of dwelling on the “guitar + bass + drum + occasional piano” set up. That’s been done for close to 60 years now.

People whine and cry about rock music not selling anymore. Well, it’s because it has been done a billion times and it’s boring.

Going back and listening to the older stuff is great. But I don’t understand why you would want to listen to the 9th rate crap that passes as “rock n’ roll” today.

Zach | 5/21/2009, 9:57 pm EST

Just a little FYI for all those who come here to post that they hate coldplay, thats not gonna change the minds of their fans so your just wasting your time on a band you hate. GG! but anyways, Coldplay puts on a great show, and if you havent actually listened to much of coldplay other than ‘Viva la Vida’ gtfo and listen to them, then decide weather they suck or not, but if you decide they suck dont come back and waste more time by saying i just listened to more coldplay and they suck. stfu and gtfo

Mike | 5/22/2009, 7:42 pm EST

Cool!

CP FAN | 5/23/2009, 1:08 am EST

What? KOL? Theyre overated but i love them still. only becoz their new album made them a tiny bit mainstream.

CP is def. one of the best bands out their now. Theyre mainstream becoz of what their music shows and means to many people. Youll be supriesd how many people like them and thos who hate them i dont know.. dont bother may be coldplay song s will surely grow on you

TeamChief | 5/25/2009, 8:53 pm EST

I was a little bummed by the Pete Yorn ending of the article. PY traditionally puts on a great show. But it’s always tough to be the opening act! It’s difficult to pull around a crowd their to see someone else!

I also saw Coldplay at Coachella a few years back… good times.

CPAddict | 5/31/2009, 4:15 pm EST

I was at this show, it was pretty amazing.
My hometown is on rollingstone.com, how cool!
The fact that Coldplay and Gwyneth Paltrow were in my hometown were even more cool.

Sofie | 6/12/2009, 3:12 pm EST

If you write hatecomments and think that it will affect people, you’re kinda wrong. People won’t change their music because of what other people say. And it’s really a waste of time. Especially if you think coldplay is a waste of time…

ll | 7/15/2009, 7:48 pm EST

to the dude talking about male singers wearing costumes being creepy…umm…bowie? kiss? pretty much any respectable glam rock band..ever? to be fair for the average rock musician whatever they wear on stage is a costume of sorts. no matter how famous you are there is some sort of self awareness of your presentation and at the very least minimal effort goes into creating or at least fulfilling an image you have of yourself or your public has imbued on you. no one is an island.
