Weekend Rock List: Green Day Songs

5/15/09, 5:38 pm EST

Because their new album 21st Century Breakdown is on shelves today, because they’re currently on the cover of Rolling Stone and because their catalog definitely calls for it, this weekend’s Rock List is dedicated to Green Day. From 1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours to their latest four-and-a-half star rock opera, tell us your favorite Green Day songs and on Monday, we’ll tally the votes and reveal the Readers’ Rock List. Bonus points if you go obscure on us and name “Who Wrote Holden Caulfield?” or “F.O.D.” and the like. According to our iTunes Play Count, here are some of our faves:

• “Welcome to Paradise”
• “Brain Stew”
• “Minority”
• “Basketcase”
• “Boulevard of Broken Dreams”

None of them are worthy of more than 30 seconds of my life. They are to punk rock what a mall tattoo is to an actual tattoo. Completely safe and boring, but you can pretend. Just say the equivalent of “George Bush suks” every few minutes and RS will kiss your a*& forever.

Green Day writing epics is the only reason I list myself as a fan. In addition, “Good Riddance” is undeniably awesome, although cliched now thanks to oversaturation.
