Your Frank Sinatra Shortlist: Leonardo DiCaprio? Johnny Depp? Chris Pine?

Kind of fitting that on the 11th anniversary of Frank Sinatra’s death, we’re consumed with his impending rebirth via the vision of Martin Scorsese. The Oscar winning director is taking the reigns of a Sinatra biopic, to be written by Field of Dreams screenwriter Phil Alden Robinson.

While there’s no word on who will try to fill Frank’s one-button shawl collar tux (or even a potential release date for the film), the mere notion of Scorsese capturing one of music’s signature voices — and one of pop culture’s most towering figures — sparked a wave of dream casting speculation and debate here in our newsroom and among our users here and over on Twitter. (Check out photos of your leading candidates here.)

It seems that most of you expect Scorsese favorite Leonardo DiCaprio to fill the role, even if you’re split as to whether or not he can pull it off. “If he pulls it off, the Oscar will [finally] be his,” h_e_n_r_y wrote here on RollingStone.com. Gimlet, however, was even less enthused, commenting “Leo was fairly rotten as Hughes [in The Aviator], a boy was cast when a man was the basic requirement. Leo looks like a child — that’s what hurts many of his attempts at more mature characterizations.”

In the Leo vein, many users are suggesting Scorsese look to Hollywood’s A-list to step into Frank’s larger than life persona. On Twitter, @BenjaminFBurns pitched Sean Penn, Brad Pitt or Johnny Depp, while @chile_pepper put her money on Sinatra devotee George Clooney (who certainly has the swagger, and already jacked Frank’s role in Ocean’s 11). A few even suggested Scorsese’s Bringing Out the Dead partner Nicolas Cage.

Scorsese and Universal have full access to Sinatra’s music through Frank Sinatra Enterprises, but many still suggested musical chops were essential to landing the role. “Harry Connick Jr. … He can nail the music easily and
he has the acting skills as well,” ttrfanatic wrote on our site. And perhaps throwing back to Sinatra’s initial bobby-soxer appeal, teen pop was served among our commenters as well. On Twitter, @Caitlin_Mullen suggested boy band grad turned pop renaissance man Justin Timberlake, while among our commenters, davids suggested Zac Efron (though he doesn’t seem like Ava Gardner’s type).

The suggestions ran the gamut from X-Men Origins: Wolverine star Taylor Kitsch to Ryan Phillipe to Vince Vaughn to Val Kilmer. But five suggestions were intriguing enough to rise above he rest:

• Chris Pine: He’s got the eyes, and demonstrated in Star Trek that he’s got the fire. Plus, that boozy barroom beat down he suffered in front of Uhura proves he has at least one piece of the Sinatra mystique down.

• Ben Affleck: @whoisfluffy suggested the State of Play star with an LOL on Twitter, but we aren’t laughing. Anyone who saw him explore the dark underbelly of TV’s Superman, George Reeves, in Hollywoodland has to be curious about how he’d handle Sinatra.

• Michael Imperioli: This one came in from an anonymous commenter, and while Imperioli might not look the part, he certainly knows the character — a skinny Italian kid from north Jersey with a chip on his shoulder and dreams bigger than the town he grew up in. Come on, it’s right up his alley.

• Matt Damon: The laughingly named “Matt Damon’s Agent” suggested Jason Bourne as Sinatra, but the suggestion has gathered enough steam on various sites that it bears some thought. Damon might be able to tap into Sinatra’s boyish charm and bare-knuckled approach to problem solving, but can he command a stage?

• Edward Norton: @HollySWood sent us this one via Twitter, and it certainly seems like doing time as David Banner and The Hulk would help Norton to channel Sinatra’s more volatile moments.

Ultimately, we’re inclined to agree with those of you who suggested no one actor can fill Frank’s shoes. So how about the same treatment Bob Dylan received in I’m Not There — multiple actors, each representing a different moment in his life? Could work (if they can sort out who gets top billing).

So what do you think? Who should slip on Sinatra’s fedora?

Hugh Jackman
Ewan McGregor
Billy Crudup

…been thinking about this one all day, still nobody fits the part perfect. Just a few names that hadn’t been suggested yet.

Steph C | 5/14/2009, 6:05 pm EST

Harry Connick Jr. was born for this role!!!

Elsie | 5/14/2009, 6:06 pm EST

When I heard it announced that Scorsese was making the Sinatra biopic, I immediately thought of Chris Pine. He does have that smooth, sophisticated air about him and can pull off the mystery that Sinatra possessed.

Anonymous | 5/14/2009, 6:26 pm EST

How about Ray liotta he played him before didnt he And did a fare job.

Keifer | 5/14/2009, 6:41 pm EST

Jouquin!

amanda | 5/14/2009, 7:13 pm EST

What about Ryan Gosling.

Sherrill | 5/14/2009, 7:36 pm EST

Michael Buble!

Zach S | 5/14/2009, 7:52 pm EST

what about christian bale?! he could do an awsome job!!

Berry | 5/14/2009, 8:10 pm EST

James Marsters could do justice to this role.

anonymous | 5/14/2009, 8:21 pm EST

Leo was not rotten as Howard Hughes, I doubt if any of you’s even remember the man. The senate scene was DEAD ON and Leo did that brilliantly, thus the reason he was nominated for an Oscars. Choosing Johnny Depp, Ewan McGregor, Harry Connick jr. Ray Liotta and the rest is laughable!! I trust Scorsese, besides he wants to film Sinatra younger years.

TonyClifton | 5/14/2009, 9:03 pm EST

I’m surprised I haven’t seen Shia LaBeouf’s name here.

Kang | 5/14/2009, 9:06 pm EST

What about Gary Coleman?

Jughead | 5/14/2009, 10:44 pm EST

What about Rush Limbaugh? That fatso looks a little like Sinatra and he’s just as arrogant and pretentious as Sinatra was.

Duke | 5/15/2009, 12:03 am EST

In that pic above, Sinatra really looks like the guy from Beverly Hills 90210, Brian Austin Green. But I’m sure he’d never get a role remotely that big.

Jack Schplack | 5/15/2009, 12:22 am EST

I think Martin Scorsese should cast an unknown actor in the role.
Any named named actor would just ruin it no matter who it was. Get some young Italian kid who can sing and act. If you saw any named actor in that role you would think hey thats”Chris Pine from star trek or whoever” acting like Frank Sinatra. To do the man and the part justice scour the earth for some fresh faced actor.

Abe Froman | 5/15/2009, 12:52 am EST

Although I do want to see it when finished, none of the names mentioned to play Sinatra in the article do I want to see play him. It is a hard one to see through

Anonymous | 5/15/2009, 12:53 am EST

How about someone who can actually sing….

Lou | 5/15/2009, 12:54 am EST

i immediately thought of matt damon, or chris pine wouldnt be bad either, but no dicaprio for this one marty!

Peter | 5/15/2009, 1:24 am EST

I’m saying Clooney is the living person who is as cool as Frank was. But he doesn’t look a lot like him, and I don’t know if he can sing either. I’m a bit tired of Dicaprio in all of Scorsese’s films. Timberlake can sing, looks a bit like Frank, and already dresses like him. Can he act though? Haven’t seen much proof yet. Tough call.

Anonymous | 5/15/2009, 2:19 am EST

I think Justin Timberlake has enough talent to pull this off successfully, and after Leo, I think he’s the best candidate. Leonardo DiCaprio has proven time and time again that he is a phenomenal actor, and Justin Timberlake has proven himself to be multitalented and very hardworking. And although I consider Edward Norton one of my all-time favourite actors, I think he may be too old for this role.

Has anyone suggested James Franco as a possibility?

Martin | 5/15/2009, 3:10 am EST

Go for a complete unknown who can sing like Sinatra. Also, voice and attitude/swagger is more important than close resemblance.

huck | 5/15/2009, 4:47 am EST

leonardo was awesome in the aviator – and he could pull this off – however an unknown would be a smart choice – to truly submerse you in the film – clooney’s too old, as is harrick and whoever said shia le beouf should be shot! that is the stupidest suggestion i’ve ever heard – never mind the fact he can’t sing, he can’t act!!

dlt | 5/15/2009, 8:26 am EST

Ever hear Iggy Pop sing One For My Baby (Set Em Up, Joe)? There’s your man

zoe | 5/15/2009, 9:26 am EST

An unknown makes sense.

Where are your heads? | 5/15/2009, 11:00 am EST

Sinatra was physically a small man. Therefore… actor who are 5ft10 and taller need not apply …

Some of these suggestions are flat out goofy.

Sarah O. | 5/15/2009, 11:42 am EST

Jonathan Rhys Meyers or James Marsters would do well in this. Even Harry Connick Jr. would be fab! Don’t torture us with Dicaprio though. This is not a role that he would do well in. At least that is my opinion.

eD | 5/15/2009, 11:44 am EST

JOE PISCOPO!

Sarah | 5/15/2009, 11:52 am EST

James Marsden, Harry Connick Jr. or Jonathan Rhys Meyers. All got the blue eyes(:

Rick | 5/15/2009, 11:57 am EST

No matter how much success he achieved, Sinatra was always a scrappy, kind of on the small side, street kid from Hoboken. It amazes me how everyone keeps suggesting these suave, tall, built leading men for the part. The perfect choice is Mark Wahlberg. He is the perfect size, the perfect age since he can still pull of a younger look if necessary and he has that street background. Don’t worry about singing, no matter who gets the part they are going to be lip synching to the original recordings. Wahlberg got an Oscar nomination for Scorsese’s The Departed. This would be a perfect match.

grom099 | 5/15/2009, 12:00 pm EST

James Mcavoy!

donnamatrix | 5/15/2009, 12:40 pm EST

The studio wants an A-lister because not enough people still care enough about Sinatra to make it a commercial success otherwise. The only up side to that may be that not enough people will notice the inability of anyone to fill Sinatra’s shoes. I hope Scorsese’s bromance with the cookie-faced DiCaprio doesn’t cloud his judgment again. And I hope Depp doesn’t do it because frankly (pun intended) he’s in danger of wasting his talent on too much mainstream tripe.

weegie | 5/15/2009, 12:56 pm EST

Young Sinatra – Pee Wee Herman
Old Sinatra – Bill Murray

Light & Sweet | 5/15/2009, 1:35 pm EST

How about Eddie Murphy?

Rachel | 5/15/2009, 4:42 pm EST

need to check out this Chris Pine. As far as Justin Timberlake he can sing but perhaps they want someone who looks more Sinatra. Acting wise, Depp can pull it off.

Frank Sinatra | 5/15/2009, 5:06 pm EST

Weegie’s got the right idea.

... | 5/15/2009, 6:30 pm EST

clooney’s too old to play sinatra. he’d be a lot better as dean martin. james marsden or mark walhberg would be good but if the film isnt made soon, they could end up being too old for the part

Bill | 5/15/2009, 7:41 pm EST

I’ve read the articles and am elated that finally, a proper movie about the Chairman of the Board will be made (and by proper I mean that Rob Cohen’s idea of the Rat Pack was hideous). I’ve been a fan of Sinatra’s music most of my life, so it’s about damn time I say. I don’t think anybody’s suggestions so far have been on the money for casting though. The only two that even come close are Harry Connick and Chris Pine, but mostly because of the eyes. And I’d have to give the edge to Mr. Connick because he can pull off the singing, although personally I’d rather hear Frank in the movie, not the actor pretending he can sing. The ideas about Leo DiCaprio or Johnny Depp are an exercise in futility as far as I’m concerned. I mean Depp is a wonderful actor but he can’t match Sinatra on his best day. And are we really supposed to sit in front of the screen and believe that a voice like that can come out of DiCaprio? No, epic fail. Not to mention the look. Whoever they get is going to HAVE to wear prostetics. Ya gotta have that Calabrese nose(and I’m willing to bet that the people asking themselves what the hell that is are the same ones that suggested one of the Jonas Brothers). I’m afraid you’re facing rather bleak prospects Universal Studios

cringe benefit | 5/15/2009, 9:53 pm EST

Getting anyone taller than 3 inches isn’t going to work. In order to capture the charisma of a Sinatra, you need a physically diminutive person who can control a room full of people just by looking at them.

That is the power of Sinatra, charisma to the Nth degree where his physical stature no longer mattered. Many of the greats have it – Bob Dylan, Harlan Ellison, Napoleon, Montgomery Clift.

If you ask me, it’s a form of bigotry to always hire large people to play important parts in films.

The part of Frank’s career that I like is the film career. He could stand in the background and still steal every scene.

It would be extra phony to get some generic handsome harry to play the guy when there are a lot of films out where people can see the real thing.

Hmmm | 5/15/2009, 10:36 pm EST

I agree with James Marsden or maybe Jared Leto?

TheDarkChrisKnight | 5/15/2009, 10:47 pm EST

Val Kilmer is the man. Give him a shot as old Frank or maybe do that Benjamin Button crap and let him do the whole thing. He is a terrific and underrated actor, and this could win him the Oscar he deserved for playing Jim Morrison in The Doors.

Amy | 5/16/2009, 9:52 am EST

I agree with Sherrill, Michael BUBLE!! He packs the fans in and has charisma, plus he respects Sinatra and that genre of music. I also think Timberlake could do a great job..

Calie63 | 5/16/2009, 10:28 am EST

I think Michael Buble would be a great pick!! He has great charisma and a large fan base, sings the genre beautifully and is a Sinatra fan. My other choice: Justin Timberlake could pull it off well..

Richard Redfield | 5/16/2009, 10:49 am EST

Harry Connick Jr. Not a big fan or anything, but he fits the bill pretty well.

Mary | 5/16/2009, 10:52 am EST

DiCaprio was brilliant as Howard Huges esp the scenes where he declines into the worst of his Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.
Maybe this Gimlet guy would like to try it. It is so easy to criticise when we have no other talent.
I trust Scorcese.
Also I think this nonsense about looking young is ridiculous. At the beginning of the Aviator Huges himself was suppose to be young. I thought he aged appropriately throughout the film
DiCaprio is excellent in portraying emotion – better than Depp (though I like him). And I think Sinatra was a very emotionally guy.

Peg-Leg | 5/16/2009, 1:25 pm EST

Matt Giraud – VERY RECENT Contestant on American Idol–Compare the facial bones and VOICE! He is the best choice! IT’s about the hat, too!

Bob Dole -Ex Senator from KS | 5/16/2009, 5:22 pm EST

Without a doubt its going to be Leonardo DiCaprio. Marty loves working with Leo and Leo is so multi-dimensional he can play just about any role.

boatman | 5/16/2009, 8:03 pm EST

Bowie was the family’s original choice to play Sinatra.

piratesfan60 | 5/16/2009, 9:09 pm EST

Johnny would be great in the role.He can play anybody and make it believeable, but he doesn’t have blue eyes.He looks young, but he will be 46 next month. So he would be considered too old. What about Alan Thicke’s son? I can’t think of his name, but he has that old sound in his voice. Michael Buble and Harry Connick Jr both have that old sound too. Any of these three would be perfect.

TSTARK1 | 5/17/2009, 11:40 am EST

What happened to Scorsese adapting Nick Tosches DINO to the silver screen? Back then the rumors were Travolta as Frank, Hanks as Dean, Cheadle as Sammy (for a second time), Sandler as Joey, and Hugh Grant as Lawford. Everybody knows the Frank story. No disrespect the Francis Albert, but c’mon where’s the goddamn Dino movie I’ve been waiting fifteen f’in years for Marty?

Jersey Dirt | 5/17/2009, 11:49 am EST

I was gonna say fuck it…let DeNiro do it. But after reading some of the comments…I think Jonathan Rhys Meyers would be an awesome choice.

Sam | 5/17/2009, 7:49 pm EST

James Marsden has the vocal chops and the look. He’s not too well-known and he’s not too tall. In my humble opinion, he’s just right.

TheAGirl | 5/18/2009, 12:58 pm EST

Johnny Depp is number 1. That man can recreate anyone. He also has those cheekbones and he can sing too. Ben Afleck’s brother, because he’s only kinda pretty and might have that East coast feel. But Let’s not kidd ourselves. Depp Does it for us…oh… but we need blue eyes…Get either of these picks some doggone contacts, will ya?
By the way, Affleck has the appeal and range of cardboard. He should be a catalogue model that’s all. J-Lo had it right making him her video vixen.

Jessica | 5/18/2009, 2:34 pm EST

With a little brown hair dye, I think Daniel Craig would do a great job.

Chris Pine has the blue eyes, but he also has the sophistication and the air of mystique needed for Frank Sinatra. Harry Connick Jr. would also be a good choice in my opinion. Those two are my favorites.

Anonymous | 5/19/2009, 8:12 am EST

DiCaprio could certainly pull it off since he’s a brilliant actor, but maybe he’d better give bipocs a rest and do something contemporary and maybe w\o Mr Scorsese.
As for suggestions, what about that latest james bond guy? don’t remember his name, he looks very much Sinatra in late years

Suenews970 | 5/19/2009, 3:37 pm EST

Joaquin Phoenix, if he shaves?
OR
Adam Lambert!

filmbluff37 | 5/19/2009, 6:05 pm EST

I actually like chris pine for this. And I love everything leo does but I don’t know if he’ll do another biopic straight out of playing teddy rossevelt.

Brittany | 5/19/2009, 6:37 pm EST

Some of the big names on here are fine actors, but certainly think they should cast an unknown. Frank was small and skinny, but he was rough. Justin Temberlake’s girly voice wouldn’t cut it, sorry. And I love Depp as much as the next girl, but I just wouldn’t want to see him as Frank. An unknown is the way to go.

Anonymous | 5/20/2009, 7:02 am EST

sinatra say once hisself in meeting harry connick jr that hcj would be the man for the role and frank should know don’t believe me look it up it was when hcj first made it but still wet behind the ears

Frankie Mayonaisse | 5/21/2009, 2:57 am EST

How about no one! Why do people still worship this guy? He was a so-so talent and an arrogant jerk who had more than his deserved share of success. Now he’s gone- let’s all please move on. That goes for Dean Martin and all that other Rat Pack garbage too.

And as for “Leo” (what, do you guys know him personally or something?) he is every bit as overrated as SInatra. It’s hard to take him remotely seriously, especially with his cheesy facial hair.

Between his inexplicable DiCaprio and Rolling Stones worship, I am less and less inclined to watch any of Scorcese’s movies anymore.

Why do people keep building monuments to mediocrity?

Deb Frank | 5/21/2009, 9:57 am EST

I think John Rhys Meyers is the best of all those mentioned. He really has that body type and that lanky, sexy quality to his movements that was a Sinatra trademark. He’s a very good actor, too. And has that little fighting bulldog quality Sinatra had. Don’t make it a top name — that will ruin it

Ryan Simon | 5/21/2009, 11:47 am EST

I have thought a lot about this. Sinatra’s life was so complex I believe the flick should be shot with three different Frank’s. “The Early Years” goes to Mark Ruffalo – he has the Sinatra features in the face, the smile, etc. “The Golden Years”(Frank in his fifties) should deffinitely go to Ed Harris – the eyes, the charisma, the baldness, they could even use one of Frank’s ol’ rugs on him to make it more authentic, lol. And finally, and this one is a blockbuster, for “The Later Years” – Sir Anthony Hopkins – watch “Meet Joe Black” and tell me Hopkins doesn’t look like Sinatra in that black tux. He’s got the facial features, the eyes, the nose, EVERYTHING to play the old Frank. That is the way I believe the movie should be shot, in three parts with three different Franks, the movie should also be about 4 hours long to cover the spectrum of Sinatra’s life and career. I am expecting a Scorsese classic here, Ragin’ Bull style, with no-holds-barred gritty drama showing exatcly what made the man tick. I’ve been following Sinatra for 15 years and I’ve thought a lot about this one. That is the way Scorsese should go: Three different actors, three parts of the movie “The Early Years” “The Golden Years” and “The Later Years” and make it at least 4 hours long. If the movie is shot right and shows the real Sinatra moviegoers with be enthralled and would sit there for 10 hours. Scorsese has the chops to pull it off.

Emma Macklin | 5/21/2009, 7:21 pm EST

Leonardo DicaBrio. I heard he might play him in some movie. I would love to see that. a

Andrea | 5/21/2009, 9:38 pm EST

I can’t see anyone else in this role but James Marsden. He has the voice (remember “Witchcraft” in Ally McBeal?)and he has the looks and the charisma. He is not so well known that his fame would overtake the role but he has enough star power to attract an audience. Michael Buble has the voice of course but I don’t think he has that rough-around-the-edges charm that Sinatra had.
Leo is a great actor but I think he’s too well known for this part.
Zac Efron would be completely wrong. Sinatra was not a pretty boy, it was his voice and charisma that made him attractive, not the other way around.

Hannah T | 5/22/2009, 7:27 am EST

Definitely James Marsden! He has the unique charm that Sinatra possessed and they both have similar tastes in music (jazz, big band). And he even resembles Sinatra. Johnny Depp and Leo DiCaprio, though fave actors of mine, do not physically resemble Sinatra and might be unable to capture his light-hearted and mischievous charm like James Marsden probably would

Barbara Kealy | 5/22/2009, 11:41 am EST

To me and to many others, NOBODY is good enough to portray Frank – Sorry guys – he was and will always be THE NO. ONE – AND we don’t need anyone to sing in his place, nobody can INCLUDING; CONICK Jr or BUBLE

Geo | 5/22/2009, 5:36 pm EST

Vaughn Suponatime…A great Sinatra clone act.

Doki | 5/22/2009, 6:23 pm EST

I thought if they would make a movie of Sinatra “The Golden Age” and when he was older only choices could be Jon Voight (cause he look’s as Sinatra, and is a great actor) or Martin Sheen (he knows every Sinatra song, looks like him, has the moves, and can sound like him with his talented accent voice)!

But for this I would choose Matt Damon or maybe DiCaprio, but Depp is not Sinatra at all!

Kelwyn Hutcheon | 5/22/2009, 8:12 pm EST

I personally have often wondered why it took so long to produce a movie
on Sinatra-He is the greatest popular
performer of the 20th or any other century-as far as who will play him-
the choice has to be monumentally difficult but I would go with Johnny
Depp-but he must NOT sing-all singing
should be the VOICE with lip sinking.

N.Fox | 5/24/2009, 7:48 am EST

If Leo can pull off the singing, he can definitely do the acting. He is the greatest actor of this generation!

Juliana | 5/24/2009, 9:36 am EST

Leo is the most brilliant actor from this generation.
He will be the best Sinatra.

Stephanie | 5/24/2009, 4:06 pm EST

I’ll go with Harry Connick Jr, or an unknown, but Harry is my first pick.

If the dude can move like Frank and sing like Frank, I’ll believe his face is Frank, but those two elements are key to making Frank.

I also hope that they don’t focus so much on his Mafia crap because honestly I just don’t care about that part of him.

Geddes A Phillips | 5/24/2009, 9:38 pm EST

For the role of Frank Sinatra my choices are Ray Liotta and Mark Walberg.

Geddes A Phillips | 5/24/2009, 9:48 pm EST

For the role of Frank Sinatra my choices are Ray Liotta and Mark Walhberg.

Cris | 5/26/2009, 2:08 am EST

Michael Buble. He can sing Franks genre and i would go and see it if Michael was chosen for it!!!

Jose M. Garcia | 5/28/2009, 11:18 pm EST

I agree that the film should include 3 parts, and Anthony Hopkins would be brilliant in the late, golden or final years, this must be included in the film if it is to be successful. Leonardo DiCaprio will also be an excellent choice..Finally Ray Liotta did an excellent portrayal od Sinatra in 1999.

Finally the actor who played Sinatra in 1992, never held the microphone like Sinatra did..Trust me I know,.I met Sinatra twice and ssaw hinm perform 46 times..Last time May 2004 MGM Grand Las Vegas Nevada..I knew it would be the last time I would ever see him alive. I went to the Cemetery in Rancho Mirage to pay my respects in 2002 and 2007.

Mark Hutcheon | 6/1/2009, 6:05 pm EST

They are all gifted actors and can adapt to almost any roll, but can they, – I hesitate to use the word duplicate- come reasonably close to the man’s body language. I dont think so. I agree with a privious comment that the voice must be that of the man. This may be the most diificult roll they have ever played.

Mark Hutcheon | 6/1/2009, 9:22 pm EST

And as for you Mr Mayonaise, I suggest you stick to salads.

EJperfection | 6/2/2009, 5:51 pm EST

James Marsden!!!!!!!!!!
He can sing he can act HE´S PERFECT!!

grnpep | 6/3/2009, 11:01 am EST

Robbie Williams!

Swimdog | 6/3/2009, 11:24 am EST

Hands down the man who was born for the role is HARRY CONNICK, JR!

Toby Huss | 6/8/2009, 1:50 am EST

He nis a great Sinatra impersonator and He can sound exactly like him singing. He has the mannerisms down plus he is young enough to play both young and older frank. He even looks like him if you tweak a little makeup and such. Toby Huss Played on Down Periscope and Vegas Vacation and he was giving a great early to mid fifties impersonation of Frank in those two films. He has to at least be considered.

AnonymicalAnalysis | 6/15/2009, 8:29 pm EST

There is an actor names Dominic West who is a dead ringer for Sinatra, the only thing lacking is a pair of blue eyes. He was in the movie 300 and if its looks they are going for then he is the man. I think the young James Franco should be considered. He definitely has an air of ideal man quality about him. I think Leo, if he’s cast, which I’m hoping for, will be amazing in this part and I know that for some this is a stretch, but Leo has proven that he can commit and I think he is also very determined and seems to posess this quality of him being aware of what people feel about him, which is a quality that Sinatra himself said he had. If anything, they’re going to need someone that truly understands this complex character because Frank was in no way a simple man, he definitely had more going on underneath. I think Frank was cunning and dark. They gonna need someone like that and Leonardo def has that down to a pat.

You gotta go with james Marsden, he ticks all the boxes. Charisma, looks, acting chops, singing voice, height. Need I go on.

first, I must assume that frankie mayonaisseasse aspires to millie vanilli, tiny tim and the like. he?she ? certainly doesn’t dig class.anyhow, I think multiple characters: harry connick, johnny depp, george clooney, and anthony hopkins. equal billing . I can’t wait to see the finished product and hope mayo naissey thing never gets the privilege!!!

Well, I personally love Leo! He has such charm, charisma, and style to his acting and performances. I have actually seen him looking pretty damn sexy serious and mysterious.

There’s only one obvious choice here: Joe Piscopo.

I like Chris Pine in Star Trek….But remember this,,, these young men are on the big screen to entertain… As long as they are doing that I watch em all and the girls too. When they’re performance is not top notch, then we tend to watch someone else….

Sinatra is not making any more movies folks… thought you might need the bulletin…

DO NOT LET SOME ACTOR SING! Take a clue from the 1945-50 blockbusters The Jolson Story and Jolson Sings again. Actor Larry Parks nailed Jolson’s looks and style and spoken parts. The singer whose voice Parks flawlessly lip synched with movements was Jolson himself. No one can make an audience believe in a copied Sinatra voice. Actors act. Sinatra sings, Don’t spoil it please.

James Marsden!

Seth MacFarlane!

I think only two people should be up for the role: Harry Connick Jr. and Tom Cruise.

The first response was Hugh Jackman?
Are you kidding me?
He can’t act his way out of a mime’s box.

joyusmusic | 8/17/2009, 7:30 pm EST

I have dreamed of Robert Downey Jr playing the role of Frank Sinatra for years now. Why hasn’t he been suggested yet?? He is perfect to play Sinatra….he sings but could lip sinc too, he has that slight Sinatra build, looks more like him than the others mentioned and his personality is much like Sinatra. He would be the only logical choice in my opinion.

dennis hosette | 8/19/2009, 5:44 pm EST

how about an unknown who can nail the vocals like travis hosette

Music Guy | 8/24/2009, 5:07 am EST

James Marsden as Sinatra
Johnny Depp as Dean Martin
Adam Sandler as Joey Bishop
Hugh Grant as Peter Lawford
Tommy Davidson as Sammy Davis Jr.

John [Redpanther] Hansen | 9/10/2009, 12:50 pm EST

Here is a young guy who realy
knows the man and the music..check
out Travis Hosette on youtube…
Zenvikings…Travi s has been singing Sinatra for 10 years…
if Frank was here today…he would say “Give that kid the part!”

John Reader | 9/12/2009, 1:17 pm EST

Travis Hosette should be considered
…not because he’s my cousin..
because his voice is like a
ghost echo from the chairman…

None of those. C’mon. Leonardo? He looks like he is still 18. Justin? Have any of you heard him sing, he sings like a 13 year old boy. Sinatra had a MANS voice. Jonny Depp? The guy is great but not for this role. Clooney? Hes too “nice/happy” looking, a better role would be dean martin. We need someone the world has never seen, but to find that talent would be near impossible. Either way i hope they find him.

Seth Kashyap | 10/2/2009, 9:40 pm EST

It has to be DiCaprio or Depp. They are the only ones with the looks and acting credentials to do justice to a legend like Frank Sinatra. The risk of using an unknown or untested actor could make a mockery of a man who could not only sing but act as well. It’s only fitting that a top director and a top actor undertake such a project.

jackie | 11/7/2009, 6:46 pm EST

JamesMcAvoy would make a great Sinatra. He has the intense blue eyes,he sings,he is small in body, and he can act.Its not always about having the popular name actor.

B squared | 11/14/2009, 2:05 pm EST

Personally, I would say Harry Connick Jr. or Guy Pearce.

But I would also be cool with more than one person portraying the part. It worked well in “I’m Not There” with several people portraying Bob Dylan, why wouldn’t it work for Frank Sinatra?
