Martin Scorsese Set to Direct Frank Sinatra Biopic

Director Martin Scorsese has been handed the reigns of a biopic about legendary singer Frank Sinatra. Universal Pictures and Mandalay Pictures will produce the film; the companies acquired both the life rights and music rights of the Chairman of the Board. “We have dreamt of making a movie about Frank Sinatra, and Marty Scorsese is undeniably the perfect vision keeper for this project,” Mandalay chairman Peter Guber said in a statement.

The Sinatra biopic is one of many high-profile music projects Oscar-winning director Scorsese has tackled in his illustrious career. Scorsese has previously helmed live-music spectacles like the Band’s The Last Waltz and the Rolling Stones’ Shine A Light, as well as the Bob Dylan documentary No Direction Home and a planned 2010 doc about the Beatles’ George Harrison. Scorsese was also originally attached to a Bob Marley documentary but was replaced by Jonathan Demme. Plus, as Peter Travers has pointed out, Scorsese knows a thing or two about soundtracking a film. The script will be written by Phil Alden Robinson, who also served as both screenwriter and director of Field of Dreams and Sneakers.

“My father had great admiration for the talent of the people he chose to work with, and the talented people who worked with my father had great admiration for him,” said Tina Sinatra in a statement. “It is personally pleasing to me that this paradigm continues with Marty Scorsese at the helm of the Sinatra film.” No casting decisions have been announced as yet, but given that Scorsese has collaborated with Leonardo DiCaprio on four consecutive films including the upcoming Shutter Island, it seems conceivable the Titanic star will be the frontrunner for the Sinatra role. No estimated release date has been announced for the film, as Scorsese currently has his hands full with the aforementioned Harrison doc, plus “in development” films like The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt (also with DiCaprio, according to IMDB) and Silence.

So what do you think, can the actor who has portrayed Howard Hughes in The Aviator and a master con man in Catch Me If You Can pull off playing the debonair Ol’ Blue Eyes? If not, who would you cast as Sinatra? The conversation continues here: Your Frank Sinatra Shortlist: Leonardo DiCaprio? Chris Pine?

Not to take away from dicaprio’s acting skill…but i’m worried that he couldn’t quite take on the enormous role of Sinatra. Just can’t see him doing it.

reuben | 5/14/2009, 11:27 am EST

i would like a relative unknown, like they have for the new star trek

lizdeitrich | 5/14/2009, 11:45 am EST

Harry Connick, Jr. Without question!

La | 5/14/2009, 11:47 am EST

Hmm I could see him pulling it off pretty well actually but I think a lesser known would be better as well

val tenore | 5/14/2009, 11:48 am EST

can’t think of anybody in acting that can play the chairman of the board

Mucky Fingers | 5/14/2009, 11:50 am EST

I like Leo DiCaprio, but for a young Sinatra, I would go with someone other than him. DiCaprio doesn’t resemble Sinatra at all, has a bigger build, and still has baby fat on his cheeks. You have to find a lean guy to play Frank.

If they pick an older actor, it’s gotta be Aidan Quinn.

John Moauro | 5/14/2009, 11:56 am EST

I can sing like “OLD BLUE EYE’S” I have been told by friends when I do Witchcraft, Fly Me To The Moon or That’s Life. I have the voice and manner of Sinatra. Please forward this to Mr. Scorsese for his search for a singer. My Email is jmoauro@aol.com or call 708-361-1150. Thanks!

For the older Sinatra we nominate Paul Salos. Paul Salos Top 6 finalist on America’s Got Talent.

Over 100 million viewers of “America’s Got Talent” voted Paul Salos THE BEST SINATRA in the USA. He has Frank’s Charisma, Style, Popularity and most of all,
“THE VOICE”!
Out of 300,000 acts that auditioned, Paul placed as the Top 6 Finalist and brought Sinatra back to Las Vegas to the Garden Arena at the MGM Grand Hotel & Casino.
Jerry Springer introduced Paul by saying; before there was Elvis there was the Chairman of the Board. When Jerry mentioned Paul’s name the audience gave
Paul Thunderous Applause and a Standing Ovation.
Paul opened the show with one of Frank Sinatra’s Las Vegas hits,
“Luck Be A Lady”. Paul told the enthusiastic audience what an honor it was for him to perform on the same stage and sing the same songs that Sinatra sang. Paul closed his portion of the show at the MGM with one of Sinatra’s flying songs, “Come Fly With Me”. The audience gave Paul another standing ovation.
Comments from the 3 judges: Piers Morgan, AGT Judge; “Paul, you have Frank’s Charisma, Style, Popularity and most of all THE VOICE. You have Sinatra Absolutely
Perfect”. David Hasselhoff, AGT Judge; “Frank Sinatra is looking down on you and saying; Yeah Baby! This show is all about Vegas and baby you are Vegas”. Sharon
Osbourne, AGT judge, “You are as Smooth as Velvet. You have the Look, His Moves, His Phrasing, and You are One Classy Guy, Just Great!”

Paul would make an excellent Sinatra!!

ttrfanatic | 5/14/2009, 12:06 pm EST

I agree with Harry Connick Jr. He can nail the music easily and he has the acting skills as well…

Cedar | 5/14/2009, 12:07 pm EST

I tend to agree that an unknown of the talent quality in recent Star Trek would be good. Di Caprio is great, but does not have the look – not intense or nervous enough. Chris Pine might actually be good in this. That said, Harry Connick would be a perfect choice, because he already has the singing talent and is a good actor.

Scorsese is brilliant of course, though I think the Sinatra biopic should be handed over to Todd Haynes who can eschew traditional linear narratives and provide a more impressionistic approach to capturing the essence of who Sinatra was. I think we need at least 6 actors to play Sinatra at different stages of his life (though in the spirit of providing good meta-narrative one of the actors will actually be playing an actor who is playing the part of a “Sinatra-like character”). Here are my casting choices for the 6 different Sinatras;

Tracy Morgan
Harry Dean Stanton
Robert Pattinson
Tilda Swinton (will get Oscar nod)
Robert Downy Jr.
Christopher Walken

shianme | 5/14/2009, 12:32 pm EST

Personally, I don’t think any actor can do Sinatra justice, he is too much of an icon to fill those shoes.

DICAPRIO!

h_e_n_r_y | 5/14/2009, 1:00 pm EST

Joe Piscopo.

…but seriously, DiCaprio should get the role. If he pulls it off, the Oscar will [finally] be his.

gabba gabba | 5/14/2009, 1:02 pm EST

Leo is you want to sell tickets – but I don’t think he’s the right choice.

How about someone who can sing?

Harry Connick Jr (great actor too….)
Clive Owen
Hugh Jackman (really)
Johnny Depp
Ewan Macgregor
Michael Buble

– and HIRE DENIRO TO PLAY SAM GIANCANA FOR CHRISSAKES!!!!!!!

Famke Jaansen should play his Mom

will I am as Sammy
Ben Affleck as JFK
Clive Owen, Colin FArrell or Gerard Buler

I’m looking forward to this movie

J.K. | 5/14/2009, 1:02 pm EST

They’ll have to go with an unknown on this. Leo di Caprio is a great actor, but I just can’t see him as Sinatra.

Harry Connick Jr. wouldn’t work either – he’s too established. If you see him do it, it would be more like a Harry Connick Jr vehicle doing karaoke homage to Sinatra – just wouldn’t work.

It has to be an unknown – what a tough job, both for casting and the actor to pull it off.

E | 5/14/2009, 1:05 pm EST

My vote is for Taylor Kitsch, don’t know if he sings, but I think he’s got that smoothness.

Gimlet | 5/14/2009, 1:18 pm EST

Ava, you made your point, then repeatedly harped on …I tuned you out after the first sentence. No need to post a biography of some sixth placer on a TV show.Ridiculous.

Harry Connick Jr – that’s got to be the most uninspired, prosaic, shopworn choice one could imagine for chrissakes. It would be fine if Frank were Perry Como, but he wasn’t just some crooner. You need to capture the complexity of the man, his duality – the star and the personality. The wannabe hoodlum and womanizer and the family man. The bully with the heart of gold. The ambition and the insecurity. Frank lived many lives – elements of which are not pretty. His life contained many contradictory aspects – and he lived with himself seemingly without ever losing sleep over it.

I’m not sure about Leo. Marty has a hard-on for him – which, I think, has more to do with securing finance for his projects than any belief that DiCaprio is the second coming of Bob Deniro. Clearly, he falls short of the mark. It wouldn’t surprise me if he got cast. Leo probably has the hubris to think he could pull it off – but what is a Sinatra sans the vocal chords? Please don’t lipsync the songs!!! Leo was fairly rotten as Hughes, a boy was cast when a man was the basic requirement. Leo looks like a child – that’s what hurts many of his attempts at more mature characterizations.

I’d cast an unknown.

But hell, I wouldn’t even touch this project. Pure vanity for all involved.

Anonymous | 5/14/2009, 1:18 pm EST

Ok, definitely NOT Kevin Spacey.
Nobody will be able to sing like The Voice, so then we either get someone lip synching the performances, or doing an impersonation of his singing a la Jamie Foxx in “Ray”.
Leo could do it. But maybe someone unexpected like Michael Imperioli too. Scorcese is the man for the job.

Arubalisa | 5/14/2009, 1:33 pm EST

Harry Connick, Jr. hands down…

You need an actor with alot of charm, so therefore It should go to someine likeGeorge Clooney or Hugh jackman

They dont really look like frank, but hey thats what make-up is for.

evan | 5/14/2009, 2:26 pm EST

tough one to call but it’s about time people stop relying on the same usual casting and use someone fresh and new.

someone said michael imperioli who would definitely nail some of the aspects and mannerisms (plus hes a musician) but on the other hand they’d hafta do a lot of make-up for him especially given his dark eyes, wavy hair and his beak nose.

TKitschFans | 5/14/2009, 2:39 pm EST

I (and a lot of other people!) would love to see Taylor Kitsch in this role – he has the swagger and the voice needed, he would bring a lot to this role, I think he could handle it…and I’ve got the sneaking suspicion he would blow a lot of people away.

Sheila | 5/14/2009, 2:48 pm EST

Harrick Conick Jr. all the way. I love DiCaprio, but Harry is himself a muscician, and I think he would be able to fit into the part more.

tantigerkitty | 5/14/2009, 2:55 pm EST

whos got the voice, the looks, the charm and the old school talent? I would have picked Carrey ten years ago, do we have a famous off spring that needs to be sprung? Someone totally new, ready to except that kind of fame– Because when your in a Film with the MASTER prepare yourself for greatness! Martin,I wish you would have done a movie in SAUSALITO LIKE YOU WANTED TO!!!
The Alta Mira is still there…

Tequila Mockingbird | 5/14/2009, 3:43 pm EST

Val Kilmer, since Franks Voice is similiar to Jim Morrisons. Plus Kilmer is real good with acting young and old, with weight gain, etc…Kilmer played Elvis in True Romance, Elvis, Morrison, and Sinatra all are in the same Vein

TequilaMockingbird | 5/14/2009, 3:44 pm EST

Unless it’s an “unknown” who has a breakout performance in them, I don’t think any actor today could realistically portray Sinatra. I have a feeling that whoever gets the part is going to be flamed ’til no end, no matter who gets it.

I’ve been waiting for this for a long time…. Not mentioned in the article: Scorsese was set to direct a Dean Martin biopic starring Tom Hanks as Dean and John Travolta as Frank…. the project never went through. Travolta is probably too old now to play Frank, but who knows? I think Dicaprio is a good choice. I really think he could pull it off.

Can anyone tell me why a movie directed by Martin Scorsese about an actor (i like guys and dolls and Manchurian candidate, don’t get me wrong) makes rolling stone news? I’m completely baffled and think this website is bullocks.

ChocoboJangles | 5/14/2009, 4:40 pm EST

alaskaboy2 | 5/14/2009, 7:31 pm EST

Harry Connick was Frank’s favorite singer before he passed away. I think he could pull it off as well. I hope hope martin doesn’t screw up any aviation consistancies like in all his other movies. Yes I’m even including the Aviator in which he portrayed the 1943 Lockheed connies with the wrong era paint jobs but used the 1952 versions of the plane.

Edwin | 5/14/2009, 7:32 pm EST

Goodfellas II: The Wrath of Frank starring Chris Pine might be okay, but it depends upon what ages are covered in the story. Frank was a skinny young guy, but a heftier old guy. By today’s standards young Frank himself would look goofy. Clay Aiken looks more macho than young Frank by today’s standards. Pine and Connick are both better looking guys than Frank by a mile.

Crystal | 5/14/2009, 7:39 pm EST

As far as vocal talent goes, I think Michael Buble should be the front runner, because he sounds so much like Sinatra as it is. But that’s if he has any acting talent. My second choice would be Harry Connick Jr, if he could train himself to drop his Louisiana accent for a more New York sounding one. Dicaprio has the talent to play the part and Scorsese has had such luck with him in the past, it would all come down to if he could sing.

Larry M | 5/14/2009, 10:48 pm EST

Nobody among today’s current known actors has the charisma to play Sinatra. And the expectations on the poor guy who is finally chosen will be enormous. Hope it is not one of those travelogue biopics (see Ali). It would be better to pick a period of his life and use that period to tell the larger storyt of his whole life. Let’s just hope it’s not Kevin Spacey. Remember “Beyond the Sea”?

Mandela | 5/15/2009, 12:31 am EST

Ray Liota has of course played Sinatra, and starred in Marty’s best film, so I cant help but feel bad for him that his Sinatra will now be forgotten in the shadow of this new one.

HeathenAngel | 5/15/2009, 1:06 am EST

Some interesting choices… I agree that DiCaprio, while a great actor cannot pull off Sinatra. And I love Harry Connick Jr. with all my heart and soul, don’t get me wrong… but Sinatra didn’t have a “New Awlins” southern drawl.. and Harry’s is far too prominent.

I really enjoyed Ray Liota’s version of Sinatra, but even he wasn’t enough to make me believe it was really Frank.

I’ll have to agree, probably an unknown will have to do it.

greerwich | 5/16/2009, 2:33 pm EST

Call me crazy, but there’s this actor on a show called
Supernatural, Jensen Ackles, who has the same tough-guy with a heart persona that ‘ol blue eyes was known for. Granted, his eyes are green, but he kicks ass when it comes to acting. Plus, I hear he can actually sing, too. If Scorsese wants an unknown, that would be his guy. I’m getting kind of tired of the same old actors in the same old movies over and over. I like surprises when I go to a movie.

Patty | 5/16/2009, 5:06 pm EST

Jonathan Rhys Meyers should be Sinatra. He’s got the eyes, the moves, the same build, and he is a brilliant actor. Also, he is the right age (all the others are great, but too mature now..) and fresh face. Look at pix of young Sinatra and of Rhys Meyers – you’d be amazed! A scrappy young Irishman playing a scrappy young italian from Jersey. It’s the only way to go, Marty!

Which actor has Blue Eyes | 5/17/2009, 5:55 pm EST

It may sound like a trivial point, but I think the actor who plays Sinatra has to – has to – have blue eyes. Rhys Meyers does has the look to play the younger Frank, but they may need someone else to play the aging Sinatra. Either way, I can’t wait for the movie!

behind blue eyes. | 5/18/2009, 9:36 am EST

Leonardo Dicaprio
Harry Connick Jr. (has the voice and the look)

i personally even think Ed Harris hes got stunning blue eyes and i dont know but theres just something about him i like.

Angela S. in VA | 5/20/2009, 2:26 am EST

Harry Connick Jr. is my vote. He has the look and vocals of Sinatra hands down. My 2nd choice Joe McIntyre he could pull it off too.

Mary | 5/20/2009, 8:10 pm EST

Def.Leo DeCaprio know one else…OH YEAH!!!!
Hey Martin do a movie on Fred Astair, use Benji Schwimmer for that one….He would be a great pick,he even looks like him, can dance has the whole package

Shoaf | 5/20/2009, 9:17 pm EST

Scorcese could have DiCaprio reprise his role as Howard Hughes, Sinatra’s arch-rival for the affections of Ava Gardner. Harry Connick, Jr. as Dean Martin (big, good-looking guy, affable personality). Angelina Jolie as Ava Gardner. Don Cheadle as Sammy Davis, Jr. George Clooney as Jimmy Van Heusen.

I am a (relative) unknown, and I would love to play (the younger) Sinatra. http://www.myspace.com/ shoaf. I am a student at Yale University, lead vocals for the Yale Tango Orchestra, and an experienced Shakespearean actor. I also have stg. like Sinatra’s build and coloring: 5′9″, 150 lbs, light brown hair, pale green eyes. Lean, odd-looking, disreputable face; big ears; edgy demeanor.

I am due to play the Emperor Nero in a forthcoming Nollywood (= set in Nigeria) rap and gospel movie-musical about ancient Rome, but I will be free as of late spring, 2010.

Comments? Thoughts? Serious inquiries only, please.

P. S. — I’d also be interested in playing Chet Baker, if that idea ever re-surfaces.

Peace and blessings,

Shoaf

Bobijean | 5/29/2009, 4:11 pm EST

The only actress out there who has the attitude and sex appeal to play Ava Gardner is Angelina Jolie. The affair, marriage and life-long love affair between Ava and Frank had the public just as captivated as the The Pitt-Jolie affair does today.

SinatraFan | 5/31/2009, 12:50 am EST

Chris Pine would be a perfect choice to play young Frank. Zachary Quinto, Pine’s co-star in Star Trek would be perfectly cast as a young Dean Martin as well!

DAN1990 | 6/3/2009, 8:51 am EST

Definately hugh grant for Peter Lawford, a eddie murphy for sammy davis. Ava Gardenr should definately be Angelina Jolie,

Christian Slater as Gene Kelly perhaps. Joey Bishop should definately be Adam Sandler.

lm | 6/17/2009, 2:45 pm EST

luis miguel woulb an excelent choice even when he is a latin singer, he comes from an italian ascence too, and is a terrific singer, even admire by sinatra.
but definatevely must be someone succes i wont like the idea that a stranger play the sinatra role, it must be someone of the actual elite of music or acting

gracie | 8/26/2009, 3:02 am EST

I agree about Jonathan Rhys Meyers. He has the charm, swagger, build, eyes, and don’t forget… he stepped into the shoes of Elvis and won an Emmy years ago.
Johnny Depp would be great in anything, but JONATHAN RHYS MEYERS has the skills, talent and looks to pull it off!!!!

Sneramtx@aol.com | 8/28/2009, 7:08 pm EST

Harry Connick would fill the bill as Sinatra. I didn’t know Frank, Sr., but I knew the two men who kidnapped Frank, Jr.. While the two were at the Federal Medical Center for Prisoners, Springfield, Mo.,they were being counseled by the Catholic Chaplain. After meeting with the two for a period of months, the priest decided to write a letter to Frank, and ask him to forgive the two for their transgression. In his reply, Sinatra summed up a six page letter to the priest by saying: ” Up to this time, I have remained silent on the subject of the matter in which the trial was directed and the harm done to my son by the claim of ‘hoax’, but your letter, written in the name of God, has caused me to break that silence {signed in ink} FRANK SINATRA. I have had his letter for 45 years now. I was the one who typed a letter to Sinatra on behalf of the priest.

Anonymous | 9/15/2009, 8:38 pm EST

I don’t think there is an actor who could bring Sinatra to life on the screen (As much as I love Taylor Kitsch and Chris Pine). As for someone playing Sammy? Eddie Murphy? Will.I.Am? No, I don’t think so. Elijah Kelley, who played Seaweed in Hairspray, would be perfect as Mr. Davis Jr.
