Depeche Mode Cancel Four More Concerts Due to Gahan Illness

David Gahan’s severe bout of gastroenteritis has forced Depeche Mode to cancel four more concerts on their Sounds of the Universe tour, the band announced in a statement. Gahan was rushed to the hospital earlier this week shortly before Depeche Mode were scheduled to perform a show in Athens, Greece. Yesterday’s concert in Istanbul was also canceled. “Dave is currently undergoing further tests,” the band said in the statement. “Depeche Mode apologizes to all their fans for this inconvenience and wish Dave a speedy recovery.”

The nixed shows affect Bucharest, Romania; Sofia, Bulgaria; Belgrade, Serbia; and Zagreb, Croatia and mean the tour is shut down until at least May 21st. Ticket holders for all the shows are advised to hold on to their tickets as announcements regarding rescheduled dates or cancellations will be made shortly.

With Depeche Mode’s Tour of the Universe booked through 2010, it is imperative that Gahan return to full health. The band is scheduled to come to North America in July, with a headlining gig at Lollapalooza also on the docket. Depeche Mode made a headline-grabbing appearance in Los Angeles earlier this month when they shut down Hollywood Blvd. during an outdoor performance for the Jimmy Kimmel Live! show.

i’m really forry for all fans from Bucharest, Sofia, Belgrade and Zagreb! ;(
and i really hope they won’t cancel Warsaw, may 23rd. some of us have been waiting for it for years!

SUMNER | 5/14/2009, 1:24 pm EST

They are saying it is “gastroenteritis” but you know it has to be drugs because they all take drugs and they are just calling it gastroenteritis, DM hasa big dark history with drugs and it could be it or not, but I hope he recovers well.

Anonymous | 5/14/2009, 1:36 pm EST

You would think it would be drugs, as is usually the case with these type of cancellations. However, I think with Gahan’s near-death speed ball at the Sunset Marquee in the late 90s, they are too old to pull that shit off anymore.

anne, poland | 5/14/2009, 1:43 pm EST

@sumner, stop spreading sh*t. he is clean now, but probably seriously ill. wish him fast recovery as we all do.

AB | 5/14/2009, 1:45 pm EST

Sumner’s an idiot.

Maria | 5/14/2009, 2:34 pm EST

Dave! Get well soon.
We all love you and are waiting for you to recover. All your friends, family and fans want to see you ok!
Kisses and hugs!

brian usa | 5/14/2009, 2:54 pm EST

anyone in recovery knows there are phyiscal problems that follow long time drug use,we know you are clean dave, get well soon!

walter | 5/14/2009, 3:05 pm EST

Drugs or Not We here in Athens hopes Dave will get better and reschudule the show soon. I was really upset at first, but what can you do? I was really pissed off about the traffic after the show was canceled…where the f$%^# does Athens find their police? Personally, I think that the rest of the band should have apologized to us, saying something like “were sorry, we’ll play two songs w/out dave, and we’ll inform you about another date…” you know, something like this. Anyway, I’m holding onto the ticket aND WAITING for them to give a new date. Cool thing is I got a shirt, I guess thats something eh…?

SUMNER | 5/14/2009, 3:19 pm EST

SAY NO T0 DRUGS, AND SAY YES TO DEPECHE MODE

I AM A BIG DM FAN BUT THE NEW ALBUM IS BEYOND TERRIBLE, NO MELODY, NO GOOD LYRICS, IT IS CRAP. IT TOOK THEM 2 YEARS TO MAKE IT LOOKS LIKE IT TOOK THEM 2 MONTHS TO MAKE AND THE REST OF THE TIME WAS SPENT DOING SEVERE DRUGS IN THE STUDIO.

anne, poland | 5/14/2009, 3:25 pm EST

is that you and your drugs again? >

Genorocks | 5/14/2009, 3:40 pm EST

Hey people are all you all on drugs give the band a break,I can not fathen on whats happening here.It reminds me of the drive by media outlets . Put your head back in the sand and listen to seamestreet tunes word out..

deano | 5/14/2009, 3:42 pm EST

I’d get sick too if I knew I was going to have to bellow “People Are People” for the umpteenth time.

m&m | 5/14/2009, 4:03 pm EST

who is in the picture with him????????
his wife??

Some fourteen year old girl | 5/14/2009, 4:40 pm EST

Poor Dave… Hope you get better soon!!!! Wish I could go see them perform! :)

Oh and to Sumner, gastroenteritis has nothing to do with drugs. It’s basically an upset stomach, but on a more severe level. Just to let ya know.
Love Depeche Mode!
:)

Maureen Murphy | 5/14/2009, 6:18 pm EST

Depeche Mode, Dave Gahan, Greetings from the Coral Casino in Montecito. Dave I wish you a speedy recovery. Get back to your gym workouts. I know how you value your recovery & I am very proud of your accomplishments over the past 13 years. I wish you the best. I will be in London in June doing Olympia. I hope to see you at the SB show later in the summer. Maureen

Andy | 5/14/2009, 7:55 pm EST

Yo people, you act like you don’t know how many musicians take drugs. We don’t know if it’s really drugs. Maybe, maybe not. Did you see the schedule of DM? Well, take a look at their Tour!
One more thing, the new album is damn good! Listen to it a few times and you’ll see! I wasn’t convinced at first, but I am now.
Great stuff!

Tiberius | 5/14/2009, 9:21 pm EST

Sumner your still an idiot. We don’t “know” it has to be drugs. What, you’ve never been ill before? And if you have it had to be drugs? Yes DM and specifically Dave did have a dark past with the drug use but that was years ago & his sobriety has been well documented since. The only solid thing you’ve said so far is that you hope he recovers well. Thats more important than any of the gossip slinging.

Joey Joe Jo | 5/14/2009, 11:07 pm EST

Looks like Dave ate some wrong food at the wrong time.

loretta | 5/15/2009, 12:18 am EST

>walter: Don’t come again.we won’t bother.
On the other hand the truth is that the Depeche Mode cancelled show was a disapointment to the thousands of fans, here in Greece.
Meanwhile their new album sucks…really sucks

Lilian Gahan | 5/15/2009, 1:34 am EST

Dave hope you will get better soon, Croatia is waiting for you!!!!

A Fan | 5/15/2009, 2:04 am EST

SUMNER where do you get your info?If i was you i would stop talking SH** havent you ever been ill (Apart from your obvious delusions)
If i was you i would pop yourself off to the Doctor to get help yourselve.

Greg | 5/15/2009, 2:46 am EST

Dave, get well!
Belgrade’s waiting, this year, next year, whenever…
For all the Sumners in this world: “try walking in my shoes”

UhhuhSure | 5/15/2009, 3:50 am EST

I’ve been a Depeche Mode since
the 80’s and loved all their albums. As for the latest I was a bit bored at first and wondered WTF happened! Is this it?! However, after listening to it a few more times I LOVE IT!! get well soon Dave! There is no DM without him!

Alex, Greece | 5/15/2009, 4:32 am EST

DM DONT COME BACK, DAVE STOP TAKING DRUGS MAN ON YOU WILL DIE!

Ali | 5/15/2009, 5:00 am EST

The new album is fantastic – second only to SOFAD in their all time list – the true fans know it is a great album. I am going to O2 (London) at the end of the month – if they have to cancel that if Dave is still ill then so be it – I won’t be bitter like some of the low life posters here cos that is life guys – get real.
And the reason the band didn’t come out to say sorry is that Fletch got bottled the last time it happened when Dave lost his voice. You all need to calm down a bit….

ikaros | 5/15/2009, 6:39 am EST

i wish good luck to poland. i am so disappointed for their cancelation in Athens but there’s nothing else we can do than hoping to get well soon and return to Greece. If possible not Terra Vibe. Dave Gahan Respect!

DM girl to Alex, Greece | 5/15/2009, 7:30 am EST

Man, you are sick.

Simina Serban | 5/15/2009, 8:24 am EST

Dave, get well as soon as possible and please…., reschedule the concert in Bucharest!!Don’t let us down, because we have waited this concert to take place for almoust an year. We all believe in you and especially in the band!!Love you DEPECHE MODE!!!

SSANGEL | 5/15/2009, 10:10 am EST

LIKE THE SONG GOES “PEOPLE ARE PEOPLE”. WHAT EVER THE REASON FOR HIS ILLNESS, WE ARE ALL HUMAN AND WE ALL DESERVE THE BENEFIT OF THE DOUBT. WHY NOT WISH HIM HEALTH AND A GREAT COME BACK! GOOD LUCK DAVE…GET WELL!

trip with teacher | 5/15/2009, 10:22 am EST

Get better! I love DM! I am supposed to see you in August!

to the DM dissers, you don’t know what you’re talking about. I’m sure the music you like is beyond vapid.

Gahana | 5/15/2009, 10:22 am EST

There are somerael idiots on here with their nasty, selfish and childish reactions. Some of you should be ashamed of yourselves.
Boris from Bulgaria, your stupidity is what stinks.
I’ve seen what gastroenteritis can do to someone- you lose weight at the speed of light, feel weak because you can’t hold food and are absolutely exhausted as a result. Anyone try and stand up like that, never mind perform and they’ll collapse.

A Fan from Bulgaria | 5/15/2009, 10:51 am EST

First, “Boris from Bulgaria !!” – you are obviously an ignorant moron! Btw, not sure how you managed to find a “big fat hairy wife” among so many beautiful women here…
Depeche Mode played in Sofia 3 years ago in front of 40 000 fans. It was an amazing show, that’s why people have been so eager to see them again. And that’s why obviously everyone is so disappointed now…
We all hope that Dave will recover soon and they will reschedule the 6 concerts for the hundreds of thousands of fans they have in the region!

eva | 5/15/2009, 11:40 am EST

I agree with Ikaros…Dave wish you well and hope no more concert cancellations…Please when you reschedule in Athens show respect as IKAROS said.Do not perform in TERRA VIBE ATH.They lack in organization.WE are talking about amateurs managers in TErra vibe. They were checking DM fans for the concert while they knew that D.GAhan was hospitalized and not only that they were issuing tickets till the last moments. What a disgrace..I am ashamed to be greek. This can only happen by greek concert organizers.SHAME on them

Carleen, USA | 5/15/2009, 11:45 am EST

As a longtime fan of DM, their past and current music is brillant. They continue to evolve. They are survivors in many ways. They have impacted the world and have great fans as a result.
I was surprised to learn about Dave’s illness. I pray for his recovery. This is NOT TO BE TAKEN LIGHTLY.
Thanks to all of you long time fans for your continued support and for those who are quick to pick or cricitize others esp the band, its members esp. Dave, shame on you for you rush to judgement and mostly, lack of compassion. I’ve been to their concerts and it’s an incredible experience.

eva | 5/15/2009, 11:52 am EST

How low of you ALEX

depechemode.ro | 5/15/2009, 12:36 pm EST

Depeche Mode, don’t Leave in Silence. We are enjoying Any Second Now your Policy of Truth, and revealing the World in your eyes was like a Halo in reverse…
Now we know that Everything Counts, and we Just Can’t Get Enough….
We will Never Let You Down, in our Free Love for you, and we’ll spread the world The Things You Said

DM = DEPECHE MODE | 5/15/2009, 1:04 pm EST

DEPECHE MODE IS A GOOD BAND BUT I AM NOT FEELING THEIR NEW ALBUM, DIDN’T LIKE PTA OR EXCITER, BUT I LOVE ALL OF THEIR PREVIOUS STUFF, SAW THEM MANY TIME IN CONCERT IN NYC AND EVEN MET THEM AT TOWER RECORDS IN NYC WHEN THEY SIGNED COPIES OF PTA. I STILL MIGHT SEE THEM IN MSG IN NYC.

DEPECHE + MODE = DEPECHE MODE, VERY SIMPLE MATH ANYONE CAN DO IT.

Anonymous | 5/15/2009, 2:41 pm EST

after the disgusting excuse of a review RS gave Mode’s SOTU cd I’m surprised you bother to give Dave space on your pages, perhaps it because DM’s world tour 09 is a monster event, very best wishes to Dave

25 years fun | 5/15/2009, 3:48 pm EST

Dave, get well soon. When you come in Athens in 1985 i was in the army. Also because of work and distance- I live in Thessaloniki 550 klm away- i did not see you and DM on 2001 and 2006. I try last Tuesday, i travel, but you and me were unfortune. Be good, take care, we are big boys now, and i promise to myself to see you anywhere now.For sure…

adriana, Romania | 5/15/2009, 4:50 pm EST

Best wishes from Bucharest! I hope Dave will fully recover after this problem and I also hope that they will be able to go ahead with the tour as they have planned. If the problems get solved, please reschedule the canceled shows! We’re not exchanging the tickets with anything but Depeche Mode!

N (Athens) | 5/15/2009, 4:54 pm EST

Terravibe Park is a shithole! Depeche Mode should only play at the Olympic Stadium!

Andy | 5/15/2009, 5:20 pm EST

You know some of you here really act like little children, well maybe you are! Stop being stupid!
I know a lot of DM fans in Greece, Turkey,Bulgaria…are disappointed, because they could’t see one of their favourite bands perform! I’m one of them!
I’ve been listening to DM for almost 30 years and I was really looking forward to this concert in Athens! Tough luck huh?
Anyway, DM remains a very important band for us who grew up with them, but also for the more recent supporters.
“Sounds Of The Universe” proves the high standard of Depeche Mode and the capability of making their sound fit right into the present. It’s a great new album! Listen to it carefully and you’ll understand. Full of great songs like: Wrong, Fragile Tension, In Sympathy, Peace, Miles Away, In Chains, Jezebel…
C’mon open your ears people!

Mike | 5/15/2009, 6:05 pm EST

Good luck to Mr.Gahan and here’s to a speedy recovery.

Zoe | 5/15/2009, 6:32 pm EST

Some of youare really kids, grow up and stop to write shit about Dave och DM…They are great and things happens…now we has to think positiv.
THE BIG PROBLEM NOW IS THE S;;;;PEOPLE AT TERRA VIBE AND DIDI MUSIC…IDIOTS:

PolicyOfTruth | 5/15/2009, 8:48 pm EST

I can sympathize Dave-gastroenteritis is no joke. Best of luck to you.

Mschirmersf | 5/15/2009, 9:59 pm EST

The runny shiz sucks! I hope Dave gets well soon. Once I had it for a month. It’s really nothing to mess around with. It can be very deadly.

DM fan in Florida | 5/15/2009, 11:29 pm EST

Just wondering if anyone knows the meaning behind the pin that both Dave and his wife are wearing on their shirts on this pages picture??? LOVE DM… HAVE TICKETS TO ATLANTA SHOW IN SEPTEMBER… SEEN THEM 3 TIMES OVER THE YEARS AND THEY ARE UNTOUCHABLE!!! LOVE YOU DAVE… GET BETTER SOON!!!

Sisterofnight | 5/15/2009, 11:45 pm EST

I don’t know if i like the band any more :(

DM freak - Greece | 5/16/2009, 3:21 am EST

Actually, we have been waiting for DM at Terra Vibe – Athens since October 2008…when they announced the concert…

Due to illness there’s nothning we can do. But the Greek organization
“DiDi Music” showed NO respect to 35.000 fans who where stuffed in front of the performing platform until 21.30.. They knew that the show would have been cancelled and they sold tickets even the very last moment… They just announced the cancellation at 21.35 and NO measures have been taken for 35.000 people to leave the place… We have been waiting in our cars to start the engine for 2 hours… NO RESPECT to DIDI MUSIC….

Please mind that all Greek Fans of DM would highly appreciate if the band would not cooperate again with DIDI MuSIC…. We are willing to pay more as long as DIDI music is not involved to your next concert…

DON’T LET DIDI MUSIC RUIN A 25 YEAR CAREER AND LET DOWN ALL 35.000 FANS…

thanks

Flavius, Romania | 5/16/2009, 7:35 am EST

Dave, get better, by all means your health is most important, please if things come back to normal do not forget about your fans from Bucharest. DM marked entire generations of fans here as it did around the world. The image of the stage that was waiting for DM in Izvor Park Bucharest is desolating. I’m holding on to my tickets and hoping for the best.

stunner | 5/16/2009, 9:01 am EST

I really wanted to see this, but I didn’t buy tickets for it because Terravibe, as already noted, is a shithole. It’s in the middle of nowhere many klms outside of Athens without any transportation access. Only by car. And if you’ve been to Athens, you know what that means. Oh, and did I mention there’s nowhere to park your car nearby either? Which mean ALOT of walking.

After one horrific concert experience at Terravibe years ago, I swore I’d never go to that place again, even for a band I love as much as I love DM. Why not just use one of the many abandoned buildings/venues left over from the ‘04 Olympics? Athens is full of them. They’re collecting dust and housing trolls these days. But didi music, being the money-hungry bastards they are, prefer Terravibe simply because it costs them nothing, thus making them plenty. Please DM, avoid Terravibe [and didi music] in the future.

Anonymous | 5/16/2009, 11:14 am EST

Get better Dave please. We love you

dim-DM-greece | 5/16/2009, 1:27 pm EST

i just hope Dave didnt fell into drugs again:((

if it is really a gastrenteritis…then i expect them to come back 2 greece…

eitherway DIDI GIVE US OUR MONEY BACK!!!!

Gahana | 5/16/2009, 1:41 pm EST

To sisterofnight who says she ” she doesn’t know if she likes the band anymore”: What the HELL are you talking about? What kind of a fan/person are you if your fanship depends on your singer falling ill or not?

Vic - DM fan since 1988 | 5/16/2009, 1:46 pm EST

Grow up everyone that says Dave’s on drugs – how would you like being accused of something like that when you were ill?! Grow up – DM don’t need ‘fans’ like you :(

Dr. Benway | 5/16/2009, 2:50 pm EST

Of course he’s doing drugs. How naive are you people? You reall think people like Gahan and the Mode are going to tell the truth about drug-taking to the rock media? Why would they do that? The symptoms of “gastroenteritis” and of opiate WD are almost identical, so there you have it.

Dr. Benway | 5/16/2009, 2:53 pm EST

Gahan’s been doing a lot of interviews about how “clean” hs is lately, which, if past history is anything to go on, means he’s banging all kinds of dope and trying to throw people off the trail. Quit insulting your fans, Dave, and just tell the truth: you had to run back to NYC to go into rehab!

Brunet | 5/16/2009, 3:51 pm EST

I don’t understand why the rumors about Dave’s illness being drug related have gotten so much traction! The man has been clean and sober for 10+ years. Anyone who is a fan and knows anything about DM knows this! To the people on the board who keep the rumors going, STOP. Just because you’re upset about the cancellations don’t give you the right to spread this mean spirited tripe! Put on your big boy/girl pants and get on with your lives!

Brunet | 5/16/2009, 3:56 pm EST

Dr. Benway (yeah right lol)

Most of us who are true fans remember what Dave was like when he was on drugs! The difference between the man he was then, and the man he is today couldn’t be more apparent. To make an assumption about someone who you obviously know nothing about is sad.

Dr. Benway | 5/16/2009, 4:20 pm EST

I agree with whoever said their new album is crap. They were crap, just awful, on Jimmy Kimmel, and Gahan seemed totally out of it. Apparently the main thing is that they are doing lots of drugs again now that they have remembered how boring “normal” life is. As for the crap Gahan feeds the media about how straight he is, he also said that previously just before he OD’d. Gahan is the last person who will tell you the truth about drugs, but if you really think he’s been sober for the last 3 years, much less 13, you are a naive fool.

Anonymous | 5/16/2009, 4:28 pm EST

Go somewhere else Dr Benway. You clearly belong in a more toxic place of your own.

Leo-Romania | 5/16/2009, 4:50 pm EST

- NOTHING- today 16 may in Bocarest AND I”m WAITING OVER 18 YEARS TO SEE MY FAVORITE BAND!!!!!

I don’t want to start any blasphemous rumours
But I think that God’s got a sick sense of humor !!!!!

speedy recovery Dave!!! and come back in stage for your fans

VirgoLibra | 5/16/2009, 8:59 pm EST

i cant believe all the silly trolls who actually think this is drug related. i’ve had an illness similiar to this and if you felt this kind of pain you wouldnt be dissing someone who has it.

Dr. Benway | 5/17/2009, 12:37 am EST

You naive little Dave Gahan fanbois should check the accounts of his bizarre behavior during the American leg of the tour for the previous album. The dude was seriously out of it. I fail to see what good your blind support of Gahan’s media lies is doing anyone, especially Gahan himself. Gahan has been “off the rails” for a few years now, yet still yabbering to the gullible rock press about his only addiction being to “JUNK TV” and how all that stuff he did reo back and really was kind of fun and not all that bad anyway. Go back and read between the “lines” and think again.

K. Koolade | 5/17/2009, 12:41 am EST

I was in the 8th row at their 2006 concert and the “laryngitis” story the band was spinning in the press is complete nonsense. Dave Gahan muddled through lyrics and even forgot some. He seemed dicombobulated and anxious. From what I could see and hear, I believe he was on drugs, as did many friends and co-workers who attended the show.

On Depeche Mode message boards, the fans are defending the band to the death, but Depeche Mode ROBBED Kansas City last week! Period! I just hope Dave Gahan has the Betty Ford Clinic on speed-dial. I’ve been to over 300 concerts and have never seen such a shameful, pathetic display. If Dave comes back to KC, I will find him and kick his junkie (ahem, ALLEGED, yeah right) ASS!!

lilian's friend | 5/17/2009, 6:59 am EST

Are you actually caring fans Benway and K.Koolade or are you just out for whatever nasty little kick you can get? Don’t confuse caring for naivety , it’s your kind of one dimensional cynicism that makes society so shallow.Whatever you two are talking about I’m not sure your conclusions are correct. I have a friend who is their costume designer and has followed them for 16 years. She’s seen all sorts from the good to the bad and there’s not much you can actually hide when working so closely together. Unless you have both actually lived with him or worked with him your conclusions are nothing but cynicism based on a past. I hope you’ve never done something which people still judge you by long after it’s gone. Cos that’s what you’re in danger of doing here with a human being. I’m not really sure that’s being a fan or a decent human being. bsing insulting to supportive fans isn’t particularly clever either. Over and out to you and your kind. See you next time!! Not.

lilian's friend | 5/17/2009, 7:03 am EST

This place is a brilliant example of how nasty and shallow humanity can get over something they nothing about. You live with Dave do you Benway et al? As my friend who has toured with them for 16 years as their costume designer says : she’s seen the good and the bad, and there’s no way someone can fake the bad when it’s there but there’s also alot of harm in judging someone as guilty when their past has been laid to rest. Take heed and now over and out with some of you.

Isy | 5/17/2009, 9:21 am EST

I feel compelled to react to some of you on here as I have spent the last 16 years on and off designing the costumes for Depeche Mode on tour. I am currently working on this tour.I have also worked with other world class bands across this period of years and can tell you that when an artist is off the rails there is no hiding it. I have seen them go through good and bad and what some of you are doing and saying on here is extremely harmful to them and their loved ones, when it is based on past experiences and conjecture.
I’m not sure that all the hard work put in by Depeche Mode and their crew, not to mention the efforts to get back on the road for the fans- is receiving the respect it deserves at this time.

Boadicea | 5/17/2009, 11:34 am EST

The poor man can’t even get sick, without people bringing up his past addiction!

Andy (Athens) | 5/17/2009, 3:25 pm EST

Respect the illness of Dave!
Respect the huge career of DM!
Repect the disappointed fans of DM!
NO RESPECT to shitty organizers who
just think about the money and themselves! You make me sick! Next time you’ll be shoving them tickets up your ass!

eva, Athens | 5/17/2009, 3:29 pm EST

I feel very sorry for both of you Dr. Benway, and whatever you are called Koolade. I have been a fan of DM for 28years, have travelled abroad to attend concerts of them. You sure haven’t shown any respect towards DM, they have been writing their history in music.I guess you must be uncivilized, I am proud that even younger generation fans aknowledge their contribution in electro pop. Congratulations fans.
I will have to agree with the greek fellows that Terrra Vibe was a shithole. One thing is for sure the 12 of May was a night to remember, with the unorganization that existed with DI DI music and that goat-field of Terrra vibe.
Wish Dave quick recovery and pls try to reschedule at the OLYMPIC STADIUM, which we are proud of having and not the shithole Terra vibe

weegie | 5/17/2009, 7:09 pm EST

These guys are still together ? ?Is this 1986 ?

Szelas73 | 5/17/2009, 9:48 pm EST

Well, what to say… Hope he will get better as I’m flying from Seattle to Warsaw to see their concert. If I’m not see you guys in Warsaw hoply see you in Seattle in August. Get well Dave.

Anonymous | 5/18/2009, 12:02 am EST

Personally I don’t give a shit whether Mr Dave Gahan still does drugs or not – and he probably doesn’t because he’s been there in a scary way – and why should I? It’s his life. Why do people have to have all this moralistic bullshit in their heads?

Anyway, I wish Mr Gahan a painless and speedy recovery.

taz-athens | 5/18/2009, 2:13 am EST

has anyone thought that maybe you can get sick once in a while genuinly and not be healthy every day,and no disrespect to dave and the band, theyre no spring chickens anymore!theyre not kept in a box got out to perform then put back again, theyre human beings with lives and families, colds and the squits!i think its good hes taking the time to fully recover so other people aroung the world dont have to go through what we did in greece,as for terravibe just stop for a moment and open your eyes, yeah it was a long drive and parking was pants, but its beautiful!! surrounded by green, mountains and trees and FRESH AIR,a real festival feel,as for the album, ive been a fan since i was 9 years old(am now 36)i think its fab and has touches of the origional stuff not their dark depressing phase.basically shit happens, i was there too,i postponed my uk trip to go,lost wages, etc, etc,am gutted too,but so what?worse things can happen in life. fingers crossed we get a repeat concert, wherever it may be.
p.s.sisterofnight,WAKE UP!! “i don’t kno if i like the band anymore”-i’m guessing your around 12 either that or your a sandwich short of a picnic, you either like the music or you dont, period!

bianca - oradea | 5/18/2009, 6:38 am EST

Dave, I hope you will get better very soon!Romania is waiting for you, please reschedule the concert in Bucharest!Love and kisses!!!!!!

Dr. Benway | 5/18/2009, 10:00 am EST

You can’t imagine how much people get angry in Greece. I say Greece not Athens cause they travelled from whole our country to see them. Next thing to make us so upset is that they were selling tickets until 21:00, they lighted up the scene at 21:30 and instead of see them, we saw someone manager of DM saying about the cancellation. No respect to people at all… Even if Gahan is really ill, Martin could appear and apologize… Also the last information I have from a very trustworthy person in the production company is that Dave with his wife scored so much [dope]at Tel Aviv for this leg of the tour, then they fight and he beat her up so much so she went to the police and they arrested them… They never flew for Athens and never arrived… The production company were waiting until last minute for the police to free Dave but….. It’s a pity for everyone…

Doc Benway | 5/18/2009, 10:33 am EST

I can’t believe the naivete of these people with the “Dave does Kaballah so he doesn’t do smack” or “Dave does yoga so he doesn’t do smack” garbage. You must be members of DM’s PR squad speading the lies Marty tells you to spread around to the gullible. So far, the truth seems to be from this source: “Also the last information I have from a very trustworthy person in the production company is that Dave with his wife scored so much [dope]at Tel Aviv, then they fight and he beat her up so much so she went to the police and they arrested them… They never flew for Athens and never arrived… The production company were waiting until last minute for the police to free Dave but….. It’s a pitty for everyone…” So Dave and the old lady were fighting over who got the biggest share of the smack stash and then Davey got mad and laid a beating on her. What a sad tale.

DM girl to Doc Benway | 5/18/2009, 11:28 am EST

You really have issues.

Dr. Benway | 5/18/2009, 2:13 pm EST

Hey, Gahan was the best was he was smacked out anyway, so this could be a good thing: a return to decadence a la mode!

K. Koolade | 5/18/2009, 2:18 pm EST

Dave IS indeed a washed-up Junky and it’s always kinda sad when fans defend people like Gahan to the death (literally!). When I mentioned that I’ve been to over 300 shows in my initial post, I meant concerts in general. This was only the second time I’ve seen Depeche Mode live. The first was in ‘94 or ‘95 and they were actually good then, and oddly enough, Gahan was probably wasted that night, as well. At least he didn’t let it impact his performance that night.

I went back to see them because I do like their music (if we in the Midwest are such yokels, why would Depeche Mode have even bothered??), but as I’ve said, in over 300 concerts, I have never seen such erratic and flat-out disturbing behavior in a performer, save for the night, one of my first concerts in fact, that I went to see Humble Pie many moons ago (the night John Lennon died in 1980, in fact) and witnessed a drunken Steve Marriott trying to pick fights with many in the audience and stumble through 4 (!) songs in the 75 minutes they were on stage. At least THAT show was entertaining, in a sick way. The Gahan debacle in Kansas City was merely sad to behold.

So defend him all you want, but when he ends up overdosing, and trust me, he probably will, maybe you won’t continue to hold your heroes in such high regard. I still like Depeche Mode’s music, but I was THERE that night a few months back and saw the fiasco of a washed-up band desperately trying to keep it together for a performance many people paid dearly to see, and failing MISERABLY to do so. The fans were ripped off in a most disrespectful manner and I don’t give a sh*t if we lived in Timbuktu, we deserved MUCH better. Trust me, Depeche Mode and especially Dave Gahan, are so completely over. I always say, If it walks like a Junky, talks like a Junky……….

Imp | 5/18/2009, 6:59 pm EST

“In 94-95 he looked wasted,at least it didn’t affect his peformance.” Duh! OBVIOUSLY it didn’t since so many people claim his singing on the SOFAD tour was better than ever, and has been sub-par ever since.

Erich, San Diego | 5/19/2009, 12:21 am EST

Unless someone has hard “proof” of the reasons for Dave’s current condition, I think it would be best to assume that he is clean and that this really is a case of gastroenteritis. This condition kills between 5 and 8 million people worldwide per year (usually when adequate treatment is not available). It is very likely that Dave is suffering severely right now while some people are lashing out with unsubstantiated, and indeed cruel and disrespectful accusations. Perhaps Dave, whatever his circumstances, deserves the support and love of DM fans. Dave, Martin and Andy, as well as the crews and everyone else involved, put a lot of love and effort into their shows. They care about their fans, so perhaps we should not judge and just try to return a little bit of the love and respect that DM has given to their fans for many years. I too have been listening to DM for almost 30 years now. Since I read some bad comments about the new album, I just wanted to agree with those who have words of high praise for this latest work. It’s nice that people can sing “Enjoy the Silence” and “Personal Jesus” word for word at the concerts, but try giving the new album a shot! As much as I truly love the classics, I am looking forward to hearing new masterpieces such as “Peace”, “In Sympathy” and “Come Back” more than anything else. DM is an evolving entity that continues to grow with time. By the way, I did see them play live on Hollywood Blvd. a few weeks ago. They sounded great! They looked great! I’m really looking forward to seeing them in here in Southern California in August. Whatever the reasons for Dave’s condition, this DM fan supports Dave, Martin, Andy and the whole DM family. No judgments here. Just trying to return a little love and respect to those who have touched our lives with their music over many years. Get well Dave! You have our love and support!

Lilian Gahan | 5/19/2009, 1:45 am EST

No news about Dave..what is happening??? I think that they already knew what is wrong with him!
Ok stomach ache..gastroenteritis but is he feeling better..what about tour???

Lilian Gahan | 5/19/2009, 1:50 am EST

And for those who lost their humanity, caring and any kind of sympathy how can you be so cruel, the men is ill!!! Don’t be selfish they will perform all the concerts that they have canceled!! The true DM fan is with DM in a good and in bad situations, especially in bad!!! Shame on you!
DM forever!!!!!

Iva - Sofia, Bulgaria | 5/19/2009, 3:50 am EST

Well, 60 000 people did not go to DM’s show yesterday and we really hope the concert will be rescheduled when David gets better and able to perform. We love him, we miss him, we need him! I am a fan of DM for 25 years, now my daughter is and she is only 6… Please, Never let us down again :)

Anonymous | 5/19/2009, 3:54 am EST

Gastroenteritis doesn’t take 2 weeks to heal… Overdosing does :-) )

Esther | 5/19/2009, 4:45 am EST

A shame we haven’t heard anything for a few days now. Not even the site was updated. Now everyone starts speculating. Drugs?? Why? can a man not become ill? During Playing the angel a gig was cancelled due to Dave’s laryngitis. No drugs in the picture at all. I’d say follow the docs advise and take your time to recover, dear Dave. By the way drugs don’t get you that sick, he did drugs in the past, kept him going on and on, at one of DM’s best tours ever!

Have a little faith please, and wait for an update. I feel sorry for all the fans who missed out on the concerts however. I myself have tickets for dusseldorf June 4, and that date is drawing near!

K. Koolade to Esther | 5/19/2009, 9:46 am EST

I was in the 8th row at their 2006 concert and the “laryngitis” story the band was spinning in the press is complete nonsense. Dave Gahan muddled through lyrics and even forgot some. He seemed dicombobulated and anxious. From what I could see and hear, I believe he was blown out on drugs, as did many friends and co-workers who attended the show. Gahan barely knew what planet he was on, let along what song he was supposed to be singing.

ewelina | 5/19/2009, 10:59 am EST

Warsaw CANCELLED

DISGUSTED | 5/19/2009, 2:02 pm EST

I think the way DM management have handled this whole issue is quite disgusting! Can they not at least try and show some respect to the fans, by releasing an update – no one wants to know all the personal details of Dave’s condition, they just want to know if he is ok, and what is happining concerning the tour! As for their offical site – the Admin and mods alsn need to show some respect to the fans, and they need to STOP running the board like a dictatorship!
Once all is back on track with DM , I think a few heads need to roll, and AM need to do some serious P.R.

Dingerz | 5/19/2009, 4:45 pm EST

What kind of attention seeking crack are you assholes on?

This:
““Also the last information I have from a very trustworthy person in the production company is that Dave with his wife scored so much [dope]at Tel Aviv, then they fight and he beat her up so much so she went to the police and they arrested them… They never flew for Athens and never arrived…”

HELLO – there are pictures of fans backstage with David before they called the show off in Athens!! (www.d-m.com forum) There are personal accounts of him talking with fans who saw him as fine. So beware of what the hell you read on this shit page!!

AnnMarie | 5/19/2009, 9:36 pm EST

Wow, I can’t believe how much BS some of you are spewing. Do you people get off on kicking someone when he is down? People like you are pathetic. Dave is clean and has been for several years. I had gastro back in November, and yes, recovery does take awhile. It completely knocks you down and can lead to other more serious problems. As a long time fan, I wish Dave good luck and health.

Haha | 5/19/2009, 10:41 pm EST

GET A LIFE! IF I HAD ONE, I WOULDN’T EVEN BE WRITING THIS! HOPE THE ECONOMY GETS BETTER SO I CAN GET BACK TO WORK AND NOT BE ON THIS STUPID PAGE FULL OF LONELY PEOPLE WHO ACTUALLY THINK DAVID GAHAN READS THIS! HAHAHA

DepecheShell | 5/20/2009, 9:39 am EST

I find some of these totally disrespectful and shame on you for calling yourselves fans. I have expended hundreds of euro on flights to see them in London and will also see them in Dublin. I will be devastated if they cannot perform in london not just because it will put me on the red financially but also because I was counting down the days for months to see them. I will be very dissappointed and upset if they do not perform if I may be honest, but I will not stoop to the level of some you by writing defamatory comments about Dave Gahan. Shame on you all, and here’s hoping none of you ever get sick because you wont be getting my sympathy.

Loving Dave Regardless | 5/20/2009, 4:49 pm EST

People, leave it alone. He is old enough to do what he wants. I have tickets for 3 shows in Southern California in August, I hope that whatever ails him is gone by then and that he is fine. No judgement here…… maybe you all should look for concrete proof that he overdosed, then you can call him a junkie. He has abused himself for many years, people get sick and when you aren’t as strong you can have a harder time with it. Either way – I grew up on DM – KROQ – loyal fan. We all have our demons, everyone knows his past demons, leave him alone and wait until you see actual mugshots before you claim he was arrested for drugs and spousal abuse. CRUEL comments. What ever happened to innocent until proven guilty?

Get over yourselves, quit judging and be decent human beings. I hope he recovers from whatever ails him quickly and without complications. I hope all of the
“Saints” that are bashing him are exposed for their sins as well!

Basildon Boy | 5/20/2009, 5:17 pm EST

All these comments are fair enough. But I (a) am a big fan and(b)work in media relations. I am not enjoying the silence that these latest press statements represent. Like most people, I have no idea what is up with Dave Gahan. He looked great on BBC a couple of weks ago. But, bald detail-free media statements tend to mean there is something more sgnificant afoot and spokespeople do not want to go into detail. (Believe me, I know.)Rehab or gastro entiritis, I wish him well. Shit, DM would not be so good if Dave Gahan was not on the edge. If the gigs happen, all the better. I’m optimistic that May 30 in London will go ahead.

drjesska | 5/20/2009, 7:56 pm EST

well there’s a load of rubbish written here but suppose everyones entitled to thieir opinion. I would take issue with that ‘Dr Benway’ though – I’m hoping you’re not a real dr cause you don’t seem to know the difference between gastroenteritis and an opiod OD – slighlty scary lets hope you’re not in an ED near me..
Being a real Dr, I haven’t seen much evidence of the old Dave around but I also know there are no guarantees. Whatever is the problem lets hope he recovers soon – I’d forgo my O2 tickets (paid well over the odds) in a flash for his good health.
All the best DM
(and Dr Benway – its time for some revision if you’re a real Dr)

Loving Dave Regardless | 5/20/2009, 8:40 pm EST

I’m listening to DM right now – real loud, and who cares if he was on drugs when he sang it? I can’t wait til I see them 3 times in one week in California. Whatever is ailing him, I pray he recovers completely and proves a lot of the Dave Gahan bashers wrong….. comparing him to how he was 20 years ago is unfair, I am different than I was 20 years ago and I have never overdosed on heroin! I have had cancer, and other medical problems, he could very well be legitimately ill, thus requiring the time to recover – he is not 25 anymore people…. I’m 40 and I don’t recoover overnight when I get sick. Dr. Benway, or whatever your name is, come on… how about some sort of ethics, if indeed you have any. You can’t diagnose someone you have never seen – you dumbass! Unless you examined him yourself (which I am sure you did not) maybe you should allow the people that did to diagnose and treat him. Stop with the once a junkie always a junkie attitude, he may or may not be doing drugs, but who the HELL are you to judge? You obviously are not the kind of doctor I’d pay to see…. there is medical confidentiality, there are privacy laws, and just general common sense. You obviously must have failed your ethics courses…. my diagnosis of you is – asshole. Time to renew your license I think.

I hope Dave gets over whatever it is and lives to be 100! He’ll still be hot and I’ll still be listening! Best of wishes to him… and remember all of you people talking trash… you may think it is funny, but how about his kids…. if this crap you spew is untrue, so far it isn’t proven, how will it affect them? You are a bunch of insensitive bastards for doing that. Let true news be given – in due time. One way or another, he will come clean with whatever it is.

Love always to Depeche Mode!!!

DepecheShell | 5/21/2009, 4:19 am EST

Basildon Boy – I totally respect your point of view and agree wholeheartedly and appreciate your optimism. I’m not going to throw int he towel on 30th May just yet.

katerina | 5/24/2009, 8:43 pm EST

I was there waiting for DM to appear on stage on May the 12th when the concert was cancelled. We didn’t “enjoy the silence” and at least the other members of the group should have said sth to us.Actually they didn’t care for the 30000 people.AND WHAT’S THE PROBLEM WITH DAVE AFTER ALL?Will anyone say sth formal?

viv | 5/25/2009, 4:19 am EST

I totally agree with you “loving Dave regardless”. As i’ve already written. IT’S HIS LIFE! I believe he fought his “demons” all these years and what ever he is going through, hopefully he will get over it!

viv | 5/25/2009, 5:01 am EST

TO Dr. Benway: Dave did come to Greece and was hospitalised in Metropolitan hospital in Athens from 19:00 12th May until 13th May. That was officialy announced by the doctors. He was dried, exhausted and very disapointed for being unable to perform that night in Athens. Stop making story’s and stIck to the fackts OK “Dr”?

Loving Dave Regardless | 5/27/2009, 1:14 pm EST

Thanks “viv” – let’s keep him in our hearts…….. whatever it is, we’ll soon know. May God keep him safe and get him healthy!!! Muah!!!!!!!!!! xoxo to Dave.

Isy | 5/28/2009, 9:21 am EST

To the people who couldn’t wait to jump on the nasty rumour bandwagon , K Koolade and Dr benway et al, I have stood by with others in shock but I really do hope you feel how shamefully you have spoken now.

Loving Dave Regardless | 5/28/2009, 4:38 pm EST

I hope all who bashed him feel shame now. A man was seriously ill – and it is assumed he hit the needle again. Shame on all of you. I pray for a speedy recovery, and as someone who just got news that her cancer is non existent now – I pray that he never has to feel that fear again. Hopefully it is all gone and he’ll be gracing our stages and televisions and internet, etc for years to come. God Bless him…. And I hope all of you who spewed nasty comments lose sleep over the crap you said, his kids, I’m sure were with him, hopefully did not read all of this crap. Cancer vs, Heroin…. hmmm… they, nor Dave, deserve the crap you claimed.

~ a TRUE DM fan!!!!

Leigh South Africa | 6/4/2009, 10:30 am EST

All the best for a speedy recovery Dave.

dropkickglobalism | 6/9/2009, 11:47 am EST

It’s over. The last three albums have been a slow decline, and now SOTU is the boring, bland and lyrically challenged end. Dave Gahan should have never started writing lyrics for the band. They are so straight forward I can finish his sentences. Either bring Depeche Mode back to its original quality, or I refuse to spend another dime past the hundreds of dollars I have already spent throughout the years.

silentmoviefiend | 9/12/2009, 8:12 pm EST

I have been a long-time fan of depeche mode and I love the new album, if you don’t like it, why go on this dmode fan post and degrade it and make yourself look like an ass? I think Dave has done well contributing to the band not just as a singer but as a secondary song writer as well. It’s good to see a band still evolving instead of just staying together to make a quick buck. You can tell there’s a lot of love and dedication that goes into their music & effort and it’s equally reciprocated by their true fans who recognize their evolution & dedication to their fans.
