Paul Rodgers, Queen Split: “It Was Never a Permanent Arrangement”

Paul Rodgers has revealed that he and Queen are parting ways. The singer told Billboard.com that after almost five years as the group’s frontman — and a summer tour scheduled with the reunited Bad Company — he is leaving Queen amicably. “My arrangement with [Queen's Brian May and Roger Taylor] was similar to my arrangement with Jimmy [Page] in the Firm in that it was never meant to be a permanent arrangement,” Rodgers said.

Queen + Paul Rodgers was born in late 2004 to perform at the U.K. Music Hall of Fame Awards. The collaboration went on to produce two world tours, two live albums and a studio album, 2008’s Rock the Cosmos. The studio album was the band’s first since 1995’s Made In Heaven, which featured the last recordings of Freddie Mercury. Rodgers said his time with Queen was “an achievement” and didn’t rule out the possibility of perhaps rejoining May and Taylor in the future: “It’s kind of an open book, really. If they approach me to do something for charity, for instance, or something like that… I’d be very much into doing that, for sure.”

“There were some fantastic e-mails we received that almost had me in tears,” Rodgers told Billboard.com of his time with the Rock & Roll Hall of Famers. “There were a lot of younger people who had given up the idea they’d ever see anything like Queen live again, and there it was, full on.” As Rock Daily previously reported, Rodgers will reunite with Bad Company for a 10-concert run starting June 17th. The band will also release a live DVD, Bad Company – Hard Rock Live, on August 8th.

Queen + Paul Rodgers was never Queen “full on.” There’s a reason they put the plus sign in there. It’s because it’s different.

GOOD NOW LET’S RESURRECT FREDDIE

Steel Dragon | 5/13/2009, 2:20 pm EST

Never should have happened under the name “Queen” in the first place. I enjoy Bad Company and Paul Rodgers, and I did enjoy his work with May and Taylor, but Freddie is one voice NO ONE can replace.

Van Halen | 5/13/2009, 2:45 pm EST

Nothing will ever be better than the original line-up, just like Bad Company. So many bands are usually better with the originals unless it is Rush, which in that case they got Neil Peart. Most of the time the original line-up is the best. They are the ones that went through the ups and downs and grew up together.

Dude Man | 5/13/2009, 2:53 pm EST

Well it wasn’t Queen. They went under the name, Queen+Paul Rodgers. I saw them on tv during the Nelson Mandela concert and Paul had a very interesting take on Queen’s work. Still, it’s good to see Bad Company back together

raisedlefteyebrow | 5/13/2009, 2:56 pm EST

Finally! Rodgers is good, its just that he isn’t Freddie. The best they could do, if they really wanted to get close, would be to get Mika. But they honestly just should have let it die with Freddie.

LA Snark | 5/13/2009, 3:36 pm EST

Two words: Adam Lambert

Anonymous | 5/13/2009, 4:24 pm EST

should have gone with George Michael in the first place… rather than Paul Rodgers.

Anyway, it’s over. Let Queen rest in peace.

McWeezy | 5/13/2009, 4:33 pm EST

Y’know, I’m not even a George Michael fan, but I think he would knock this gig out of the park. Easily the best guy that they had sing at that Wembley tribute concert back in ‘92.

May/Taylor | 5/13/2009, 4:51 pm EST

I actually hope Brian May and Roger Taylor continue with new Queen songs and tours but with MAY AND TAYLOR ON VOCALS

Brien Comerford | 5/13/2009, 4:52 pm EST

Brian May should tour again. In addition to being a dynamic guitar master he’s also a very competent lead vocalist. His “Back To The Light” and “Another World” CDS are exemplary.

Steely Fred | 5/13/2009, 5:53 pm EST

The Adam Lambert idea is not a bad one, actually.

Anyway

i like the lambert idea

Black Hole Sun | 5/14/2009, 12:34 am EST

They should’ve never tried to go on as Queen without Freddie. That dude was irreplaceable, and no offense to Paul Rodgers, but Freddie’s talent and charisma will never be matched. If they went on under a different name, it’d be an easier pill to swallow.

Nick Toone | 5/14/2009, 3:23 am EST

For me it’s never been ‘Queen’+ anyone; it’s May & Taylor tarnishing the Queen legacy by limping on as a tired two-piece with rent-a-members. A bit like The Who really…
By all means go out as May / Taylor with whoever you want, just dont call it what it isn’t! Queen as a band couldn’t exist after the memorial gig in ‘92.

heathen2002 | 5/14/2009, 12:13 pm EST

Paul Rodgers is a fantastic singer for blues-based rock. But with Queen it just doesn’t work. Plus, it’s not really Queen is it? Taylor and May should just let a sleeping dog lie..They really have tarnished the image in the last few years. And the combination of Rodgers with the Queen sound comes across as a really horrible “Baywatch” soundtrack. or the Bud “Mr. Styrofoam-Finger Maker!!” songs..

Freddie=Irreplaceable

Dean Wien | 5/14/2009, 1:46 pm EST

I’ve seen the original Queen many times at Madison Square Garden, and I even saw Queen + Paul Rodgers at The Meadowlands Arena, and I agree..Queen + Paul Rodgers were not really Queen, but it still gave us fans the opportunity to enjoy the songs in concert again. I could never understand why Brian May doesn’t choose to be the lead vocalist. If you listen to his song “Driven By You”, he sound more Queen than anyone else! Brian and Roger should continue, but with Brian on lead vocals.

Chris | 5/15/2009, 4:19 pm EST

Adam Lambert would be a fantastic addition. I think Dude could pull it off. He is very talented and has that voice!!

Mercer | 5/15/2009, 5:09 pm EST

Gary Cherone-ex Van Halen and Extreme would be awesome in Queen

Mike/Houston,TX. | 5/16/2009, 12:21 am EST

Does PAUL RODGERS ever age? He seems to look almost the same since FREE’s 1970 “Fire & Water” Lp cover. Luv Free & Bad Company. I’m a fan of Rodgers and can’t help but notice that while his peers and fans age, age, age – he remains almost the same!

Chris | 5/16/2009, 9:17 am EST

Marc Martel would be perfect for this.

Madogg | 5/16/2009, 3:41 pm EST

I’d like so much to see a “Queen + Axl Rose” featuring.

Dean | 5/16/2009, 10:20 pm EST

Adam Lambert. That is an excellent idea.He can definitely pull it off well.

Steve2020 | 5/18/2009, 12:18 pm EST

Funny about the Adam Lambert comment. Someone mentioned that to me a couple weeks ago after the ‘rock’ edition of AI. I responded, ‘yeah, he could go into Queen OR Led Zep/whatever-it-would-be-calle d..if Jimmy’s still looking to put a band together.

Bman | 5/19/2009, 9:52 am EST

Man! Both of my ideas were taken -Gary Cherone and Adam Lambert. Gary could pull it off. I saw him perform some Queen songs on some benefit show on MTV and nailed it.

Lambert could do it and do it well and would get them back in the mainstream overnight.

Ben | 5/19/2009, 10:43 am EST

Just bring them back making music.

queen 4 ever | 5/19/2009, 12:02 pm EST

the best choice for lead singer of qeen is the singer from keane his voice is almost identical to freddie’s its quite astonishing actually, listen to their “hopes and fears” cd same pitch and strength, tom chaplin is his name i believe, i was quite blown away when i first heard keanes music, i always thought there would never be a singer that could match freddie’s voice range, but tom can almost to perfection, brian and roger should consider him.

queen 4 ever | 5/19/2009, 12:06 pm EST

my deepest apologies for the type-o of QUEEN!!!

Andrea | 5/21/2009, 12:49 pm EST

Adam Lambert is the IDEAL choice to be lead singer of Queen! His voice is the only one I’ve ever heard that even comes close to Freddie Mercury’s. He would be a rock god and a wonderful addition to my favorite band of all time!

Country | 5/21/2009, 2:00 pm EST

I knew this seeing Adam in his gory singing with Queen , he was soooooooooo happy , and I think he would do an out standing job and bring BIG bucks bringing queen out of that Dusty old Closet……..
Go Adam…….

nonono! adam shouldnt be in queen. ew ill have to stop listening to queen if hes there. pooo

adam lambert! perfect choice for queen!

mads | 5/22/2009, 3:40 am EST

Adam Lambert is perfect for Queen. He is already well known and could draw in younger crowds to Queen’s concerts.

Jungleland2 | 5/22/2009, 9:39 am EST

Thank you Paul Rodgers for giving Queen a new life. I like most of the world was devastated by the death of Freddie Mercury and saddened that I would never get to see the mighty Queen.

I saw Brian at a small club in Atlanta the night that G&R canceled (1993?)- Brian was going to open and had already booked his flight, but even that – a great show – was not Queen.

Queen + Paul Rodgers was the hard rock side of Queen and that worked great in concert. He was not trying to be Freddie, just a respectful interpreter of his songs.

That tour meant a lot to us Queen Fans…thanks!

Missy | 5/26/2009, 3:26 pm EST

I am a huge Queen fan and I have been following Idol all season long. I thought Adam was a stronger singer until I heard him sing with Brian an Roger. When compared with Paul Rodgers singing, it doesn’t compare. I don’t want to offend but it would have been better if Paul Rodgers sang a bit and then Adam, just ike Lionel Ritchie did. Still a fan though.

Paul Rodgers was Great with Queen — He gave the act much more of a heavy rock feel — and the record forced Bri and Rog to play in new styles — like the Santana tinged Voodoo. By album 3, they would have gotten it together — no patience — they are just in it for the $$ now

Dwane Pipe | 6/19/2009, 8:46 am EST

It´s a shame fans don´t move on. I´m a big Queen fan and when I heard Paul Rodgers was joining I new it wouldn´t be the same but I had a feeling it would work and for me it did. Just think how Brian Roger and Paul must have felt before their first couple of gigs, I bet they spent a lot of time in the toilet wondering how they would be received. On the first dvd Paul pretty well stuck to Freddies melodies, on the latest dvd, Queen + Paul Rodgers live in Ukraine, he makes the songs his own and I love it, he has a great voice. I live in Spain and unfortunately didn´t get to see them but a lot of friends did and said that Brian seemed to be taking over the concert too much. It didn´t come across that way on the dvd but I do think he should forget about his solos with the double digital echos, they´re starting to get messy. I love guitar orientated bands and Brian is one of my favourite guitarist so don´t take my criticism to hard.
Don´t forget! Freddie loved Pauls voice and wished he could sing like him.

No one should ever try to replace Freddie, let it be !

how about Free + Brian May

no name | 7/15/2009, 3:48 pm EST

Queen + Paul Rodgers was an interesting take, the concert in the Ukraine was excellent. Now maybe Brian May maybe interested in Free + Brian May??

cap’n crunch says No one should ever try to replace Freddie, let it be. Brian & Roger weren´t trying to replace Freddie they just wanted to get back out on the road & play good music by Queen & Free etc. Now! as a couple of people suggested Adam Lambert that would be trying to replace Freddie so no way give him the job, anyway he´s too young & hasn´t done his apprenticeship in the music business yet. Also George Michael is a good idea but again when I´ve heard him sing Queen songs he also sounds much like Freddie and so we get the same argument all over again about replacing Freddie. Queen & Paul Rodgers filled stadiums all over the world so they did something right.

Beistovin | 8/17/2009, 10:53 pm EST

I would rather have queen without PR he was not right for them and the Cosmos rocks SUCKED!They should just let Brian sing his songs and Roger sing his songs and record and tour that way . Paul Rogers is a great singer but when you tag the name Queen on you expect something a little more fun and silly and all over the place . The Idea of queen and Adam Lambert is interesting its just he is so busy showing off to give proper attention to the melodies .

bubu_miha | 9/4/2009, 1:55 pm EST

well, at the beginning i felt that queen + paul rodgers was a dreadfull messaliance, but seeing them live in paris exceeded my expectations and paul rodgers seemed ok afterwards, of course the nicest thing would be to see brian and roger singing queen songs but i’m not sure they would manage to pull it over on a concert… anyway i would just love to see them again touring regardless of the formula…
freddie IS the master forever and ever:)

Queen Fan | 9/10/2009, 2:29 pm EST

I saw an australian Queen “sound-a-like” band and they were really amazing. The guy was Freddie Mercury 2.0 (looked like him, acted like him, sang like him, all very respectfully). I hated the entire relationship with Paul Rogers, I’m so happy he’s gone. I just wish the Australian dude would join them as he had the audience here in the USA out of their seats.

Old_Queen_Fan | 9/13/2009, 11:21 pm EST

I saw the Queen+Paul Rodgers concert in Miami and they absolutely rocked the house. I actually enjoy Cosmos Rocks a lot. He isn’t Freddie, and wasn’t supposed to be. He is a great rock singer joining an established band – like Sammy Hagar and VH. He gave the band a different sound altogether that I thought was great, and the band never forgot their roots in Freddie’s music. The live tributes to Freddie in the concert were so emotional there was not a dry eye in the house. I just wish John Deacon would have come out of retirement and really made it Queen.

Anonymous | 9/16/2009, 6:51 am EST

Queen + Paul Rodgers never did Good Lovin’ Gone Bad. I’m disappointed.
