American Idol believed in the power of three last night: it was the show’s 300th episode, the final three Season Eight contestants performed and Simon Cowell behaved as though he wished there were only three judges. Kris Allen, Danny Gokey and Adam Lambert visited their hometowns and prepared two songs: a judges’ choice and a personal pick. In the end, Gokey’s songs (by Terence Trent D’Arby and Joe Cocker) showed him to be a powerful but dated singer, while Allen’s (by OneRepublic and Kanye West) painted him as a more flexible and adventurous contemporary artist and Lambert’s (U2 and Aerosmith) primed him for prime-time. Plus, we got footage Carrie Underwood in Angola on behalf of the mysteriously missing Idol Gives Back, which was really just a few nice moments for Toto. Here’s how the night broke down:
• Now that he’s done Led Zeppelin, it seemed obvious Adam Lambert would next tackle Aerosmith, and on his second song, “Cryin’,” we saw his uvula and his true rock spirit. “You should be a rock star, that’s who you are, baby” quoth Randy Jackson. Cowell implored viewers to actually vote for Lambert, rather than assume he’ll make the finals. If that’s not an endorsement, what is?
• Kris Allen took a bit of a pounding on his first tune (see below), but pulled off some David Cook magic with a killer cover of Kanye West’s “Heartless” accompanied only by his acoustic guitar. More soulful and spare than the Fray’s version, Allen’s had Jackson proclaiming it “better than the original.” We’ll be checking Kanye’s blog for a retort.
• Everyone went wild for Danny Gokey’s Joe Cocker cover, “You Are So Beautiful.” Was it a strong vocal? Sure. But it was sluggish and snoozy, too.
• Cowell “literally had a call on Saturday from Bono saying it would be their pleasure to have him sing this song,” so Lambert was permitted to sing U2’s “One,” a song performed quite brilliantly by Mary J. Blige on the Idol stage a few seasons ago. After a quiet start, Lambert went to town on “love is a temple” and ended somewhere near Zooropa.
• Kris Allen’s Kara/Randy pick, “Apologize” by OneRepublic, had more energy than the Ryan Tedder version, but succeeded mostly in highlighting the tension between Cowell and Kara DioGuardi. After Cowell chastised Kara for picking the song and then booing Allen’s faithful arrangement, things got awkward.
• Paula picked “Dance Little Sister” by Terence Trent D’Arby for Danny Gokey, who had to admit he didn’t know it. His rendition was predictably screamy and hoarse — in his “money spot,” if you trust the judges. Kara thought his dancing was too “gyratey”; “desperate” said Simon.
Will the two Rock Daily picks — Lambert and Allen — make it to the finale tonight? Will Kara DioGuardi be back as a judge next year? Leave your predictions in the comments. Plus, look back at Season Eight, in photos, check out our interview with Matt Giraud and take a look at who the ousted Idols think have a chance of taking it all.
