Yusuf Returns to U.S. Stage After Three Decades at L.A. Show

Yusuf, the artist formerly known as Cat Stevens, performed his first American concert in three decades Monday night at the El Rey Theater in Los Angeles, mingling early hits with emotional new songs recorded from his just-released album, Roadsinger (To Warm You Through the Night). It was gentle music of quiet drama, with messages of hope and spirituality, peace and troubled romance. Amid jangly acoustic guitars on “All Kinds of Roses,” the bearded singer-songwriter repeated, “So many feelings, so many feelings …”

The beard is mostly gray now, and he stood behind the microphone with the presence of a serene holy man, but the voice had lost none if its warmth from the ’70s, and his newest songs fit easily among such hits as “Peace Train” and “Wild World.” In a performance that lasted just over an hour, Yusuf gave equal weight to his newest work, beginning with “Welcome Home,” which opens the new album, as fans watched from chairs spread across the El Rey’s dance floor.

Past and present collided during “The Rain,” a song dating back to some Cat Stevens demos from 1968, but left unfinished until the new album, with words just as evocative in the present: “Everybody’s thinking about the flood, wondering if the water’s going to turn to blood/Things are looking bad, everybody in the world’s looking so sad.”

A scheduled May 3rd concert in New York was canceled over a brief work-visa snag, leaving the Los Angeles show his only U.S. date remaining this year, though others are expected. Monday’s concert was his first in the U.S. since a religious conversion to Islam in the late 1970s, when he changed his name to Yusuf Islam and retired from secular music.

Roadsinger is Yusuf’s second studio album of secular songs since emerging from retirement in 2006. (His final concert performance as Cat Stevens was in 1979.) He returns to live performing with his gift for emotional connection intact, his voice rising and pleading on the gently sentimental “Where Do the Children Play” and amid the jangly folk and dreamy slide work of the new album’s title song.

Late in the set, Yusuf told of the many “breaks” in his life, from surviving tuberculosis and a near-drowning off the Malibu coast to the successes of his early career and discovering the Koran, and seeing how his “secret path became a straight path.”

The five-piece band’s elegant presentation was not unlike that of a Leonard Cohen or Joe Henry, with soft lighting and a band dressed in formal shades of black. But there was a bit of the hippie left in Yusuf, with a backdrop depicting an old VW van decorated by a peace sign.

Before diving into the shimmering acoustic melody of “Peace Train” to close the evening, a fan shouted to the former Cat Stevens, excitedly calling him “the best!” Yusuf smiled. “No,” he said, pointing skyward, “He’s the best, he’s the best.”

i was lucky enough to be there.(that’s another story) the buzz on this event was incredible. the list was heavy with industry gatekeepers and gray executives, but in the back the fans stood in awe, a generation built on the melodies and message. it takes a lot to cut through the chaos of this town, but then again, chaos is in the eye of the beholder. Yusuf sees it all and brings it into perspective. it was an honor to be there and i will try not to brag, but it was historic! the el rey is a gorgeous venue and this man, Yusuf, Cat.. whomever.. is more than a wealth of songs(an understatement to be sure) and compassion, he is a sage and a performer/entertainer and above all.. cool as the word itself. he puts it in his songs and he delivers it on stage. he played with Alun Davies and (forgive me) three other exceptional players and singers, keys, bass and lead. no drummer, not necessary. the vocals and arrangements were spot on. the new album is the real deal. if you liked his work on mona bone and teaser.. you are going to dig the new one. see this show.. support the artist. welcome back Yusuf! change the world one song at a time.

w. w. | 5/12/2009, 12:01 pm EST

Was the Yusuf performance filmed and, if so, will it be released?

DAVE | 5/12/2009, 12:18 pm EST

I HAVE ALWAYS LOVED HIS MUSIC,ROCK ON YUSUF ,AKA CAT

Ari | 5/12/2009, 12:42 pm EST

Did he do “Foreigner suite”; the song that sounds like “Viva La Vida” by Coldplay? I heard it 2 days ago and it was lush and beautiful with poetry in the lyrics. What a songwriter….phew!

Rick_in_Raleigh | 5/12/2009, 2:07 pm EST

Now I wonder when the common people/everyday fans can get to see Yusuf/Cat. It’s always the industry execs, high-rollers and movie stars that gets in first, innit?

Cat Man Du | 5/12/2009, 3:19 pm EST

His songs are great but his politics suck, much like Sean Penn

CapaJC | 5/12/2009, 4:35 pm EST

Sean Penn has good songs?

RAX | 5/12/2009, 5:50 pm EST

I am sooo happy to see the true living legend back on stage!!

Love his songs and can’t get enough of them!
Welcome bakc Mr. Peace/Yusuf/Cat!

Peace 4 ever!!!

Cynthia | 5/12/2009, 5:52 pm EST

His “politics suck?”

He practices Islam. Contrary to scurrilous rumors and slander he is not a radical, not a member of Al-Qaeda, not a member of the Taliban, did not support the fatwa against Salman Rushdie. He does work for charitable organizations and is devout.

Yusuf Islam practices his religion but he doesn’t practice “politics.”

Ellie | 5/12/2009, 6:11 pm EST

I was lucky enough to be there, too. What a beautiful night.

And how timely “Cat’s” return is… at a time when our planet needs spiritual guidance more than ever. He’s still on the road to find out. And he’s still writing about faith, not just in G_d but in all beings.

His return to music is a poignant reminder of how truth is really the most inspiring music of all.

Welcome back, Yusuf!

James sulis | 5/12/2009, 7:28 pm EST

My wife and I always played the Cat on our stereo, we played all of his albums constantly. We grew up with him. Now, 30 years later, it is a pleasure to hear him new again. I bought my wife his “Roadsinger” on her birthday and she was so pleased that I could get her a nice gift of the new Cat (Yusuf Islam)
Rock on peace train man!

Well said ‘Cynthia’, Cat Man Du your a loser.

supercool1 | 5/13/2009, 8:34 am EST

Is he riding the “peace” train or the “jump on the bandwagon of suing Coldplay” train? I like his music and have no problem with his religion, but my feeling is that a guy this article describes as a serene holy man wouldn’t be troubling himself with such a petty lawsuit, regardless of whether he has a genuine gripe, needs the money, or is looking for a bit of free publicity.

Father & Son is a great song, though . . .

zeezuma | 5/13/2009, 8:46 am EST

He is a phony…

Nmar | 5/13/2009, 9:46 am EST

Only in America in 2009 will we allow a man accused of terrorist connections to play on our soil. Liked him for a couple of years, now noooooooooo.

momma cass | 5/13/2009, 10:16 am EST

Cynthia–NOT well said—don’t conjure up the devil and expect him to behave. Tell me how his religion and politics are separate? They are not. he left the peace train long ago.

tu | 5/13/2009, 11:12 am EST

i thought that our country had religious freedom. as far as i am concerned his music speaks for itself. just because he practices islam does not make him a terrorist. i am much more worried about the bullshit, hateful jingoist crap put out by so called american “lovers of freedom”.

Christina | 5/13/2009, 11:27 am EST

I wish that you holier than thou liberals would get off of your high horses and get real. You say you accept all races and religions but you don’t. Admit it, you don’t like Yusuf because he’s Muslim. There is no proof that he has ever been involved in terrorist activities, just a lot of heresay. There is a possibility he might have said some things that he shouldn’t have in the past but when it comes down to it, I truly believe Yusuf is a man of peace. If you listen to all of the songs he has written, they all convey that he has always been searching for more meaning in his life, not to cause anyone harm. We will probably never truly know what went down with the Rushdie situation, he might have said things that were misconstrued, but Yusuf appears to be older and wiser now.

It’s amazing all of the criticisms Yusuf receives. Meanwhile, how many people in the music industry are role models and paragons of virtue? The majority have been or still are drug addicts, alcoholics, sex addicts, money hungry people who will back stab their friends for a dime. Does that mean that one can’t still enjoy their music? Even if you don’t like Yusuf’s religion, his music still can be appreciated. The Rolling Stones are moral degenerates but that won’t keep me from listening to their music. The Beatles weren’t angels either but should that prevent people from appreciating their music? Yusuf isn’t perfect, he has his faults like everyone else. So why don’t you perfect people out there give him a chance and listen to the beautiful music he has to share. His music is certainly better than most of the crap that is being put out by the music industry today.

h_e_n_r_y | 5/13/2009, 2:24 pm EST

I’m not familiar with 90% of Cat Stevens/Yusuf’s music, but I do know this:

This is a review of his recent concert. If anyone wants to bash his religious beliefs, then go to the Fox News website… You’ll feel right at home.

Anna | 5/13/2009, 5:14 pm EST

I really, really love him and his music as both Cat and Yusuf. I also admire him for sticking to his beliefs despite the assumptions people make about him because of them. And the music!

Chet | 5/14/2009, 3:20 am EST

It’s amazing to me that people still try to group him with terrorists. I think our President has been linked to one or two and we still elected him. Yusuf has done more good for the people of this planet than any 100 people most of us know. His music is outstanding and has more love, peace and spirituality than we are accustomed to. You should also check out his previous Yusuf releases.(Another Cup and the live Dvd, Yusufs Cafe) You may learn much more about the man.I would welcome him as my neighbor at any time. Did you haters realize a few years back that the Noble Prize Committee named him Humanitarian of the Year. I’m pretty sure they don’t reserve that for terrorists. Hope I havr the opportunity to catch a show.

willow | 5/14/2009, 4:07 am EST

Go to yusufislam.com and then the “chinese whiskers” section. Yusuf answers in detail the questions about his religion and the Rushdie nonsense.

He answered one question but the question changed when the answer was published. Yusuf is still steering the “Peace Train.” Always has.

Dr. 33 | 5/15/2009, 1:03 pm EST

The man has won peace prizes for crying out loud. Donated half the proceeds from his 2002 Box Set to victim’s families from 9/11. Donates his royalties from the 60 million ablums sold to the “Kindness Foundation” for children. Proceeds from the Indian Ocean song on his 2-CD Gold compiliation when to families of the victims of the Tsunami in the Indian Ocean. Man can rock and tell a story and still stirs folks with that voice. Welcome back Steve, Cat, Yusuf!!!

Dr. 33 | 5/15/2009, 1:07 pm EST

By the way, it is grossly unjust that he has to continuosly be nominated then rejected for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The man stirred the singer-songwriter genre in the 70s along with Joni Mitchell. They are the ying and yang of the era and he deserves to be there with her. The are too many good but not great artists in the HOF that have not had the impact on people 39 years later. Put him in.

nemestrinus | 5/16/2009, 12:27 am EST

This is awesome! I didn’t know that Yusuf was making a comeback but I have had a feeling in my heart for a couple of years now, that he would. He was one of the great musicians of the late 60’s and into the 70’s and his old songs still ring true. The new music is amazing and I am thankful that he is writing and performing for us once again. His spirit shines brightly upon us all! That he has adopted Islam as his religious framework should only serve to affirm to all of us the positive aspects of that faith.

Floridian | 5/16/2009, 3:36 am EST

Christina – please don’t assume anything about liberals, or assume anything in general. You don’t know anybody here, nor do I.

Just as an example, I’m a liberal non-religious Jewess who has loved Cat/Yusuf for 40 years….missed him for about 30 since he gave up secular music for awhile. So glad to see him on TV performing again, looking great, wearing western clothes, aging very nicely, and thankfully still riding that Peace Train. He proves to me the great side of Islam and the Qu’ran.

Remember now, there are different levels in every religion, and extremists, unfortuntely, exist in every religion.

Cat/Yusuf is back and I wish him and his family well. Keep on keepin’ on and keepin’ us entertained. Every time I hear Father and Son, it brings a tear.

Thanks Yusuf/Cat, especially for the memories, and by the way, you sound as good as ever!

Just my 2 cents worth…

It was a beautiful evening. I was there with my wife and we both loved the concert. After some 30 years this man has come back with wisdom and a true spiritual essence. His presence on stage at this historic night beckoned one to envy the peaceful nature of his soul. He has found the one, and he has once again brought beautiful music to our hearts. Thank you Yusuf!

tom h | 5/20/2009, 6:59 am EST

I am glad the L.A. show was a good one. I would have loved to be there, My selfish side is certainly disapointed I didn’t get an invite. However I am thrilled for those who were blessed to be there.
Yusuf’s music has tought me to play guitar. His lyrics have been the words of a father I don’t have…together they have, he has, helped me bury my daughter, and my brother, and find peace and love within myself. The world is a much better place with him and his music. Thank You Yusuf!

It has been my great pleasure to have performed most every Cat Stevens song over the past 30 plus years. Presenting CAT Stevens music has led me to seeking goodness, peace and understanding, finding this by far the better road to travel. Today I continue to present Cat’s music. I truly hope one day we will all “pick up the good book” ..which ever that may be for each one of us, instead we are being fed grocery store magazine & TV’s deceptive spin.. While our souls remain empty..
Yusuf YOU are a true living holy man, this I know.
Read all of Cats/Yusuf’s lyrics, feel his truth and his emotion. You too will know .. And again.. “let the person among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone”
And to those that judge ask: What have they done with their life to help others? And, would you be willing to give up life as a super star – giving away everything for years to a worthy great cause?
Unbelievably, Yusuf has done this in devoting his life to good, as God would have us all do ..

I saw Yusuf give a speech on his life about four or so years ago here in London, and he had just been denied entry into the US. He was very funny and quite warm, but rambled on about Islam almost incoherently and admitted that “I got into a strict crowd that said I shouldn’t play music, so I didn’t.” Yes he was a radical islamist, or influenced by them, but he has renounced them so more power to him. No one is beyond redemption, as Christ teaches (and He is an Islamically recognised prophet)!

Ali | 9/26/2009, 1:01 am EST

I am very excited that Yusuf Islam has made a comeback. I would love to have been there to see him perform live. But like others I was unaware that he was going to be here in the U.S. performing. Peolple, please listen, I am a Muslim myself and I want you to know first hand, We want Peace in the world as much as any other human being does, regardless of race, religion or creed. The simple word of Salam in Islamic faith means “Peace” and that is the first thing we are taught to offer when we meet someone and shake their hands. There are over 1.5 Billion muslims in the world and less then 1% are the knucleheads that ruin it for the rest of us God fearing Muslims. But again, dont be naieve and believe everything you read in the paper or what the media leads and wants you to believe. Contrary to what you are told, There is NOTHING in the quran that says for Muslims to kill non-muslims aka the Infidels. And in doing so you are granted paradise. This is so untrue. The value of human life in the sight of God is such, If a person kills an innocent person in the sight of God it would be as though they had killed off God entire human creation. It also says that if a human being saves another human being then in the sight of God it would be as though that person have saved all of God ceation and a reward will be secured for you on the day of judgement.

Yusuf is not a Terroist but he is an Extremist- He is extremly Nice Extremely caring extremely gifted extremely generous extremely Awesome.
Welcome Back!!!
