To show solidarity with his struggling hometown, Eminem will fly 200 laid-off Detroit auto workers to Los Angeles when the Relapse rapper stops by the Jimmy Kimmel Live! show for an interview and performance this Friday, May 15th, the first of three nights the rapper has booked on the late-night show. According to the Detroit Free Press, the rapper will also invite the 200 workers and a guest to a secret show he’s staging in the Motor City next week.

“In all the media coverage Detroit is getting, everyone forgets about the people that have lost their jobs without getting big cash payouts after dedicating themselves to the auto industry,” Eminem told the Free Press in a statement. “Jimmy Kimmel and I got to talking, and we wanted to remind everyone that there are real people affected by what’s going on in Detroit, and try to show some of them a good time while we’re at it.” This isn’t the first time the rapper has used the airwaves to bring attention to his recession-slammed city: During the NCAA Final Four, Eminem filmed a PSA reiterating that the city would stay strong through these hard times. Rolling Stone recently examined the fate of Detroit in Motor City Breakdown.

Eminem will also make an animated appearance this Sunday, May 17th, when he gets cartooned and joins Family Guy’s Stewie to co-host “Animation Domination” on Fox. “It was a thrill to work with Stewie,” Eminem said in a strange press release. “I’m a big fan of talking babies and their humor.” Check Nah Right for a photo of the cartoon Slim Shady. Of course, all this leads up to the release of Eminem’s new album Relapse, out May 19th. Click here to read Rolling Stone’s four-star review of Relapse.

You know… I’m a cynic.

On paper, it sounds like Eminem is doing a really nice thing…

But in reality, the truth is this is strictly a publicity stunt to sell copies of his new album.

Eminem is using these laid off workers, for his own personal gain. Eminem is the very definition of a douchebag.

You may be correct in your assertion that Eminem is doing this for his own personal gain but at least he is doing something. What are you doing other than bitching about things and making pissy comments. Oh yeah his new album is great as well you should check it out dick.

Kims Deeler | 5/12/2009, 7:29 pm EST

It doesn’t matter if he is doing it for personal gain (which I don’t believe he is). Mother Theresa could have done the same thing and in the end, it would be for her own personal gain. She would have done it to make her feel good about herself. That is personal gain.

Performing a true charitable act selflessly (and without publicity), is not personal gain.

Doing something like Eminem is doing, in front of a vast television audience, when he has a well-timed brand new album to promote, is disingenuous.

Why not just give the $$ that would be spent on plane tickets, etc. ?? I’d rather have the cash than fly to LA.

Matt | 5/13/2009, 7:46 am EST

Well, Anonymous, it’s not like Em forced them to go with him. They decided to take him up on his offer. So 200 autoworkers obviously liked his idea. And, if nothing else, these guys will have a good time, nothing wrong with that.

TheCoz | 5/13/2009, 9:38 am EST

I agree that this is a great gesture but it would have come off more genuine if one of the auto-workers leaked ths story instead of one of Eminem’s PR people.

Eminem has never grown too big to stay loyal to Detroit. While most celebrities dismiss their hometowns and prefer the LA lifestyle, Eminem has stuck with the city that has made him the success he is today, warts and all.

The key phrase in this article is “Of course, all this leads up to the release of Eminem’s new album Relapse…”. Calculated marketing and publicity is how I see it. Blah and phooey.

I personally don’t care why he is doing it. I get to take advantage of this opportunity as I am a laid off UAW employee. So, use me, Eminem. Just use me in California.

Anonymous- you really need to get a life. Being cynical all the time makes you sound like a complete douchebag.

Denise | 5/13/2009, 11:35 pm EST

Anonymous–Stuff a sock in it. I wonder, if you were in our position (laid off, UAW workers), would you have the same cynical attitude? I’m guessing you’d be the first person on the plane.

haha and Matt…..right on!

Kym | 5/13/2009, 11:58 pm EST

Who cares why he’s doing it. All celebs do publicity shit when they release albums or movies. They gotta make money or they’re gone. I’m sure the workers don’t care what his intentions are. They are gonna have a blast regardless. And you don’t even know him so its very stupid of you to say shit about him. He’s talented and I think you’re just jealous.

i was supposed to be one of thos laid off workers, but unfortunately for me, my union doesn not understand the meaning of solidarity. the plane was scheduled to leave at 6am on friday, but at 3pm on thursday i finally got word (after several phone calls and lots of dodged questions) that i WAS NOT going, i was removed from the list and so were all my coworkers. heres the best part….they didnt plan on calling us. they scratched us off the list guess we were supposed to just KNOW somehow. so 15 hours before i was scheduled to take off, i get word i am UNINVITED. they gave our spots to others at a different plant.

thanks and huge kudos to eminem and to jimmy for trying. we all were extremely excited to go and spent all kinds of money and time getting ready. only to have it taken from us. but at least they tried. being out of work is stressful and any little glimmer of fun welcomed.

hope those that took away our spots have great time. i’ll be home-NOT watching.

-in solidarity

eminem has always been loyal to detroit and this is a great way to bring publicity to the struggling motor industry. anyone who thinks he is doing this for financial gain is seriously deluded, relapse is goin multi platinum regardless!
