Depeche Mode’s concert in Athens, Greece, was canceled today, May 12th, after lead singer Dave Gahan reportedly fell ill and was forced to go to the hospital, Reuters reports. “We regret today’s performance has to be canceled… David Gahan fell ill in his dressing room,” a concert organizer told the audience of 20,000 at the Greek capital’s Terra Vibe Park. Details are sketchy, but Gahan was reportedly “rushed” to the hospital. According to the AFP, organizers hinted that Gahan might have suffered from “suspected gastroenteritis” and could potentially perform tomorrow if his condition improved, but no official word has been issued.

The band is currently on tour to promote new album Sounds of the Universe; concerts are booked through 2010. Most notably, the synth-rock icons are also scheduled to headline a night at this year’s Lollapalooza Festival in Chicago. No word whether Gahan’s illness will result in more cancellations. Stay tuned to Rock Daily for more information as it comes in.

Last month, Depeche Mode drew more than 12,000 fans to their performance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, which was the largest crowd the show had ever seen since launching in 2003.

If he’s been ill all day long, how come the people who met him backstage at 20.30 say he was fine and healthy? The announcement was made at 21.30 by the way..

drugs????????
he been clean for over a decade, post something that doesn’t make you look like a dork

Z | 5/12/2009, 7:59 pm EST

Sources say there was an incident backstage.. might have been that he had a huge fight with his wife, made a mess of his dressing room and took off… sources say… ;)

Journalista | 5/12/2009, 8:03 pm EST

I have had gastroenteritis and you don’t need to be “rushed” to the hospital for it. It is a severe stomach pain but not something to go to the hospital for. I covered the L.A. show and he seemed in fine form then, just a little tired. Godspeed to DG.

Imp | 5/12/2009, 8:04 pm EST

What a difference a decade makes. It has been implied a little here, but if it were 1999, we would all be TOTALLY convinced he’s using again.

Journalista | 5/12/2009, 8:06 pm EST

Ps. I want more comments from Z who seems to know what’s up. Ps2. To all the drug commenters, he’s been off all drugs and drink for years so shut it.

Z | 5/12/2009, 8:31 pm EST

No drugs involved. David met with fans who had won a competition and got to see him at 20.30. He seemed in excellent health. You don’t go ahead with meeting some competition winners if you ‘re about to be visited by doctors backstage, examined and rushed to the hospital by 21.30. Period. As for the dressing room incident… what more to say? we’ll know more in the morning.
p.s. there is no privacy here.. if he was in a hospital, even his phone extension would be known already… i really hope i am very, very wrong about everything. otherwise, he’s no good

Dimitris | 5/12/2009, 8:47 pm EST

i met him about 19:45 backstage and he seemed a little tire to me…

NB | 5/12/2009, 10:01 pm EST

How about a cause of exhaustion. Let’s stop speculating about drugs and fights. Maybe he was too damn tired. The man runs marathon concerts nearly every year. He’s getting a bit older and he probably can’t take concerts the way he used to when he was younger. A good case of exhaustion can send you to hospital, but let’s wait and see. I can only guess – just like everyone else.

Anonymous | 5/12/2009, 10:35 pm EST

They should really be ashamed of themselves. I’ve met people that travelled from all over Greece and spent a fortune to be at that show.

I live in Athens and personally spent (apart from the 80 euro ticket) 30 euros to make a nice depeche mode t-shirt, 60 euro to get there, 50 euros on booze while waiting to them to appear and another 60 euros to get back home.

scr*w you dave

Greg | 5/13/2009, 12:03 am EST

Which pathetic reporter of Reuters say that there were only 20.000 people in the event???
They must be blind or intentionally misleading public!
Either way is… WRONG!
We were AT LEAST 35K if not close to 40K….
People kept exiting (after the bad news) for over an hour…
TerraVibe has NEVER ever gathered so much people before, in any event.
This is one more reason for the HUGE disappointment.

Anonymous | 5/13/2009, 12:16 am EST

I’m sure they’ll do a makeup show.

Yv | 5/13/2009, 12:17 am EST

Thank you, avtarsingh!

Besides “gastroenteritis” basically just means inflammation of the digestive tract. You can get it from eating something gross or you could genuinely have some bacterial or viral issue.

Also, real fans would be more concerned for David Gahan’s safety than anything else.

How selfish to ask him to perform if he can’t even leave the restroom!

And this is “suspected gastroenteritis”. It could be something much more serious (although I hope not).

ViolatedOne | 5/13/2009, 1:38 am EST

I had gastroenteritis once, I was sitting on the bog shitting and puking in the sink next to me at the same time, body temp was flashing from fever to stone cold, fuck, I thought I was dying, the most ill I’ve ever been and it came on so suddenly.

Anyhow, DM have now said they will reschedule another concert in Athens.

Anonymous | 5/13/2009, 1:38 am EST

We were there waiting for them for hours, they were supposed to show up at 9. Then at 9:30 someone comes on stage and says we have to leave. Then we had to wait for 2 hours before managing to actually leave the place,as the traffic was impossible! I hope it’s all on Didi Music (the people organising the gig), he couldn’t be healthy at 8 and not able to perform at 9. Hope he gets well soon
To YV, don’t be so harsh. We lost a whole lot of our time, paid some good money and it was all for nothing. I, for once, don’t idolize DM and didn’t lose my sleep over Gahan’s health. I wish him the best but it WAS a huge dissapointment

BlueHaloMode | 5/13/2009, 1:56 am EST

I am disgusted by your comments, first of all Dave Gahan DOES NOT use drugs. He does not drink alcohol. He is into Kabbalah. Has no one ever eaten something and gotten violently ill? Food posioning? Perhaps they ordered out or the caterers were not careful in the preperation of food. They are in a foreign country. For G-d sake, Give the man a break. In 28 years of being a fan, I can tell you that this is not the norm. If he was on drugs he would have preformed. Do some research before you go running your mouth. Dave must have been ill, he is not a flake and I am sure it was a very difficult decision for him to make. Give the man some credit, he is an up and up man with morals and he loves Mode fans.

BlueHaloMode | 5/13/2009, 2:02 am EST

I can imagine how disappointed all of you were, but “shit happens” We are human. I am sure they will try to compensate ticket holders as best they can, perhaps they can change some dates around and preform again at a later date. This is just not like him. Dave must have been very ill to go to the hospital. I would think that fans would put his health above their own entertainment. Perhaps I give people too much credit, just seems like such a lack of regard for him as fans to be so hostile and pissed off that he became ill. I can not recall the last time Dave missed one of his concerts, unless you go back over a decade to when he was using. That is NOT the case here, I assure you. I would be angry with the venue and how they handled things when the or if the news was delivered that the concert was cancelled. I image Martin and Fletch were very upset as well.
Shalom

eva | 5/13/2009, 2:06 am EST

what a big dissapointed.Cannot undesrstand why we were checked in to the concert at 5.30pm and suddenly 9.30 we were told that Gaham was taken to the hospital since that morning. The organizers should be ashame of themselves. What a waste of time last night, what a dissapointment. Organizers shame on you all. Hope Gaham recovers. And all the 30000 people get their money back soon. This can only happen only by Greek Concert Organizers. SHAME SHAME on you again.I wish I could spit on you

BlueHaloMode | 5/13/2009, 2:10 am EST

British electro-pop pioneers DEPECHE MODE were forced to scrap a gig in Athens, Greece on Tuesday (12May09) after frontman DAVID GAHAN was taken ill just before showtime.
Gahan was struck down with a bout of stomach flu gastroenteritis while preparing for the show in his dressing room. He is currently under the care of medics in a nearby clinic, according to reports.
A concert organiser addressed the 30,000-strong crowd at the city’s Terra Vibe park, telling them, “We regret today’s performance has to be cancelled… David Gahan fell ill in his dressing room.”
It is a blow to the band’s global Tour of The Universe trek, which kicked-off in Israel on Sunday (10May09).
The group are hoping to reschedule their Athens concert for Wednesday (13May09) if Gahan is well enough to perform.

Victor | 5/13/2009, 2:20 am EST

As everything in Greece nothing works properly. There is no official info on the organiser’s site Didi Music and don’t expect there to be.The only thing organisers are concerned about in Greece is how to rip people off. Anyway, if Dave was taken ill, we wish him all the best but I dunno, what about all these conflicting reports about seeing him fine backstage. And if the concert does not go ahead for today, do not expect your money back or refund of any type, this is Greece and organisers of such events in Greece are usually no better than common criminals.

eva | 5/13/2009, 2:22 am EST

wish well to D.Gaham, but SHAME on the organizers.who checked us in at 5.30pm and sudenly we were told at 9.30 pm about his illnes which occured much earlier than the check in time at Terra vibe Park. This only can happen be greek organizers .SHAME,SHAME on them

Stelios | 5/13/2009, 2:33 am EST

There is no information as per the norm in Greece on organiser sites and I do not expect ther to be, what I foresee is chaos tonight, people just turning up and being told again at 9 or 9:30 that the concert will once again be cancelled, so expect rioting tonight.

Don’t expect your money back either, this is Greece we are talking about and people behind the scenes in such events are rogues and could not care less about fans having bought tickets and shows being cancelled. They are an entire bunch of black-market ringleaders charging huge amounts for tickets (when one considers the average Greek salary) and only a trickle going to for example, Depeche Mode, all the rest being eaten up by many intermediary shady characters.

Ivan from Ukraine | 5/13/2009, 3:38 am EST

Well, we are flying to Istambul tomorrow, and their website says nothing about Istambul show, if it is on or off. I find it disrespectful.

In any case, I wish Dave get well. I guess he might have a little more than enough celebrating his birthday on 9th of May.

Dave Gallagher | 5/13/2009, 3:52 am EST

I am with the Depeche Mode fanbase team flying in from the UK yesterday and I would just like to say the following about the cancelled concert in Athens. First and foremost, it is well-known that Didi Music and Terra Vibe are a bunch of criminals as they always adopt shady tactics whether it is in organising or cancelling a concert. Dave did actually suffer from a bout of gastroenteritis, but this happened at approximately 16:00 and he was taken to hospital at approximately 19:00 so what happened yesterday by the organisers was abominable. They will and we will take them to the European court over this scam because despite them knowing that Dave was unwell and unable to perform, they kept selling tickets and merchandise etc….This just show what a third world country Greece is.

Take care everybody and ther just might be a possibility of DM playing tonight in Athens – info will be available from 14:00 onwards. Keep on loving DM and suffer well.
Best,
Dave

lolo | 5/13/2009, 3:59 am EST

is the concert in istanbul cancelled as well? Please somebody inform us!!!

ploc-ploc-ploc | 5/13/2009, 4:03 am EST

Bad Moussakas can make you really sick!

Dave Gallagher | 5/13/2009, 4:27 am EST

Just for your info,Depeche Mode had even originally asked for a ticket price of 40 euros for the Athens concert and that just got stuffed down the drain. It’s really unfortunate that organisers in Greece continue behaving like a bunch of criminals. Anyway news is filtering in that Dave is much better and that concert is likely to go ahead.More news as I said at 14:00 today.

laila | 5/13/2009, 4:28 am EST

hopefully he’ll get well and we’ll all have a wonderful concert in Istanbul!

Anonymous | 5/13/2009, 4:34 am EST

I hope all DIDI music criminals catch a one-month “cycle” of Gastreneteritis for what they did to us!!

Matt | 5/13/2009, 4:34 am EST

“foodhead” fuck off!!! and learn to read. Besides the obvious suspicion that he may be using again, whic I agree is probably not the case, most people have problemn with the organisers.

Besides that, I was there and I am really dissapointed. There is no way that they had to wait until 0930 to call it off! It was a trick in order to sell all food, drink and merchandise. The funny thing is that when I was entering @ approx. 0830 there were some merchandisers that started setting up to sell at that time. I thought that it was too late for people coming in, and too early for the end of the concert. After the announcement 30′ later I astarted thinking that I have been totally tricked. I do believe the reason of the cancellation is something other than illness. It just doesn’t connect. Anyway, I prefer a later date rather today.

Tarek | 5/13/2009, 4:36 am EST

It is a outrageous how nobody even updated us on how and when we can get a refund, they said that the concert will be rescheduled but did the idiots even wonder if the thousands of people that travelled many kilometers for this concert can take another day off work and afford another night stay in Athens to attend the next day?? I hope the company does face the European Courts and I hope for once this wont be handled the “Greek” way.

Giorgos A | 5/13/2009, 4:45 am EST

The organizers are a bunch of shit!

They kept seeling tickets to the people till 9:00 pm. They could have announced Dave’s illness in the early evening.

Furthermore the concert area is totally unorganized and someone must waste 1 hour to find a parking place. I spent 100 euros for a so called VIP area, which was far away from the scene and nothing extra was provided for the extra money we had to pay the Didi Music and Terravibe IDIOTS!

I wish Dave the best and urge DM next time in Athens to perform in a stadium and not let Didi music organize the gig.

I still wonder if thousands of people ask their money back, what didi music will do….

A BUNCH OF CRIMINALS!

eva | 5/13/2009, 4:51 am EST

Shouldn’t by this time the depeche mode fans who attended the concert, and having the dissapointment to be informed by now if the concert will take place todayor at least to be informed how they will get their money back when their tickets have been torn by the check-in agents. Again Shame on you. One is for sure I’ll never attend concerts organized by DD music. They are so irrespnsible. They only desreve a spit by all the 30000 people at least

for fks sake | 5/13/2009, 4:52 am EST

istanbul not constantinople | 5/13/2009, 4:54 am EST

Didi made a big mistake by selling the tickets without giving information to the audience. But, let’s not forget the contracts between the bands and promoters. For example, n the last 3 years’ contracts if the band cancels the show because of sickness or any other reason; the promoter can’t get back the deposit!!! who will save the promoters?

john | 5/13/2009, 4:58 am EST

you stupid people …. I hope all of you who said bad things about dave and dm get sick for a month. Insane people and you call yourself christians . SHAME on all of you stupid people

Anonymous | 5/13/2009, 5:01 am EST

I was there, I was hugely dissapointed like everybody else, stuck in the car for 2 hours etc and disgusted with how things were handled but I was equally disgusted with the anti-Greek/Greece vitriolic comments I have read on this sight. I am Greek but lived in the UK for 20 years. I recognise that Greece has a long way to go on the organisation front but I have experienced some chaotic gigs and other events in the UK also. And let’s not forget the terrible tragedies at foodball grounds. Why so much hate? Afterall and for what’s it’s worth we organised one of the best Olympics ever and sincerely wish that the UK pulls it off just as well and safely. And let’s not also forget the great events staged here in Athens and at Terra Vibe which bring people over from all over Europe. Lastly, let’s not hasten to blame the Greeks, the “moussaka” and the organisers until full details of what happened are known. What if DM was indeed well as some people witnessed backstage and he cancelled last minute? could it be that he did so because he was playing the “third world country” Greece? could it? and where were the other band members? they didn’t even bother to come on stage to say “sorry and goodnight”. Huge disappointment on many fronts…

disgusted with ur comments | 5/13/2009, 5:33 am EST

Personally i hope Dave gets well soon and so what if he misses 1 gig. They won’t just leave it at that. It will be rescheduled so get your heads out of your Aholes and show a little compassion. He’s entitled to be poorly sometimes you know. Just like you all are.

Fot | 5/13/2009, 5:41 am EST

Hello all! I’m waiting with bated breath to find out if the Athens/TerraVibe concert will be rescheduled for today (Wednesday)… I really hope so. As soon as you know, POST IT :)

But when all is said & done, let’s all hope Dave feels better and that it’s nothing serious.

Anna | 5/13/2009, 5:56 am EST

If they play tonight, is there any chance one can find and buy tickets at the entrance? How does it work when a concert is rescheduled like this?

Anna??…paizeis me to pono mas??

Michel J | 5/13/2009, 6:06 am EST

I cannot believe some of these comments. Out of their hundreds of concert dates in close to 30 years of career (I’ve been a fan for the last 26), Depeche have canceled something like 3 or 4 shows. This is one of the most incredibly professional acts around and they make a point of giving their audiences absolutely the best time. No matter how disappointed anyone is, how can they be so blind, selfish, outright fucking stupid, or any combination of the above, to BLAME a performer like Dave for something he’s probably the sorriest of all about ? Not to mention the “stop the drugs” comments, which are not only insulting, but really worthy of the sort of inbred sheep-shagging fucker you’d expect to find at a death metal festival (by the way, well done on the “anonymous”, people; if you don’t feel like taking responsibility for whatever shit comes out of your brains, it’s probably not worth typing it in the first place, is it ?). A lot of so-called “fans” really don’t deserve this band. Or any other for that matter.

Anna | 5/13/2009, 6:26 am EST

No, not at all. I just heard the concert might take place tonight and since I could not go last night, I have no ticket. I was just wondering if I can find one or not. I am really sorry for you all, it must have been terrible!

N | 5/13/2009, 6:29 am EST

First of all, SHAME to those that say that Greece is a thirg world’s country. You should be ashamed of these comments. The bad organisators in concert doesn’t tranfsorm the country in third world’s. You insult its people and a country that gave birth to culture and it`s one of the most beautiful in the world. So, if you don’t like it, just don’t come back again for holidays or anything and stay in your perfect countries or to others that are most “civilised” according to you (even if I can tell bad things for most of them, but anyway)

I was there. There was at least 50.000 people. Every support group performed until 19:50. The concert was about to start at 21:00 and until 21:30 the organisators kept selling tickets and let people to get in and after 10 minutes they say it’s cancelled.

So… whatever happened, SHAME to the company. Unfortunately, the comments that say he was ok until 20:00 make me more suspicious (I was anyway, maybe my journalist aspect makes me like that). However, I’ll stick to the illness thing and wish him all the best, cause YES severe gastrenteritis can rush you to the hospital and make you unable to perform.

Nevertheless, I think that at least the other members of the group should come to apologise on stage to show that they really care about the people who paid ridiculesly so much money and traveled 1-2 hours to get there,

Moreover, the reschedule thing says nothing, because I’m pretty sure almost half of people are unable to get back there today (I’m not sure either) cause we have works too! The best would be to give back the money to the people that have tickets but can make it today or, if it’s no happen, OF COURSE pay back all of us!

Anonymous | 5/13/2009, 6:32 am EST

I was there. Backstage. Gahan was in a room with his wife for half an hour or sth. He was “loaded”. And then he took off.
But the basic problem is not that, if you ask me (although it is, if you know what i mean). The real problem is about this fuckin’ venue, with 25.000 capacity, and a parking for only 500 cars. It took me 2,5 hourse to get to the entrance, from the centre of Athens. And 2,5 hours to get back.
Screw DiDi. Never Again. Boycott the motherf…

Sylver | 5/13/2009, 6:34 am EST

Some of the comments below are not only ill informed but bordering on racism. Dave was sick and the concert cancelled as a result; when was the last time any of you took a day off work due to illness? It happens, people are only human and yes I avoided a bad pun there.

I agree with Sylver
Valid, credible sources say that David suffered from gastroenteritis. An ambulance came at 21:05 and took him to the hospital. According to a fan, he signed some autographs before, but he seemed pretty tired. Rumors about drugs / overdose are completely insubstantial. There is a probability for the concert to be rescheduled for late July 2009.

jared, london | 5/13/2009, 7:16 am EST

are these actually DM fans? Dave exhausted? on drugs? touring every year? etc etc… mmmm, anyone can get gastroenteritis- someone can not wash their hands after the toilet then prepare food- it doesn’t have to be ‘foreign’, or due to ‘external’ catering. All the venom about a ticketing company equating to Greece as a country being hopeless is also quite bizarre. I was waiting for a train for ages last night at the station in London- does this make the UK a shi*thole? Of course not. Let’s just hope Dave gets well (he’s been clean from drugs and alcohol for about a decade now) and that the other concerts go ahead. Finally, to anyone thinking you can sing 25 plus tracks whilst suffering from gastroenteritis- you’ve clearly never had it. The comments about puking, diarrohea and fever etc. are completely right- it’s hellish. I could barely drink a cup of water or turn over in bed-the idea of playing a concert even within days of having it in my opinion is remarkable. Get well Dave!

From the Didi Music site – announcement:

On Tuesday 12.05.09, at 21:00, the sudden feeling of physical discomfort that hit the singer of Depeche Mode, Dave Gahan, just a few minutes before going on stage for the bandʼs performance, resulted in his immediate transfer to the hospital and the postponement of the bandʼs show.

Even though everyone hoped for the singerʼs speedy recovery and the rescheduling of the bandʼs show for today, 13.05.09, according to the information received by the bandʼs management and the doctor on duty, the artistʼs health condition does not allow it.

Shortly, a new announcement will follow that will regard either a new date for the show of Depeche Mode, or its final cancellation.

The showʼs organizers kindly request that all you ticket holders keep your tickets as these will guarantee you your entrance if a new show date is scheduled or will allow you to get a refund in the event that the show is cancelled altogether.

Thank you all for your understanding.

The internet is full of so called “news” but nothing official…
I’am from Romania, we wait DM here on the 16th, and I also have ticket for Sofia on the 18th…
Apart from the lack of information, I love DM, I hope Dave gets better!

Z | 5/13/2009, 7:38 am EST

There is also word from someone who claims to be at the Metropolitan Hospital – where Dave Gahan is supposed to be as well. He says “He [Gahan]is still at the Metropolitan Hospital. He wants to depart for New York today”!
we’ll know if this is true later today

Anonymous lucky bastard | 5/13/2009, 7:39 am EST

and in the meanwhile, the concert arrangers amanged to sell massive amounts of merch, beer and water. Too bad they didn’t manage it in a more professional manner (yes, I am greek, yes, I am a DM oldtimer and no, I didn’t go to the pithole they call a concert venue)

Greece...enjoy the silence!! | 5/13/2009, 7:40 am EST

First of all we were about 40.000 people at teravibe and i expected at the time of the anouncement the oficial start of 3rd World War…!! Instead of this we stay at the arena 45min or more so we have a step by step evacuation without any injuries or panic… as it could have hapened because teravibe is not a very big arena so… NOT SAFE FOR 40.000 people. We did not enjoy DM silence and expect them to come back !!

Louise Matthews | 5/13/2009, 8:06 am EST

Sources from the UK from people associated close to the band say that the concert in Athens will go ahead today 13th May at 21:00 at 12:30 GMT / 13:30 British Summer Time in other words at 15:30 local time in Greece, an official announcement to this effect will be made. According to the same sources Dave is already out of hospital and feeling much much better. We shall wait and see.

for all of us who live in athens:
ok, it was a great disappointement, we were tired, but not such a big deal.
Being among ppl yesterday, i heard many of had come from islands far from athens and had to wait for hours to get the boat back. I ve heard ppl saying that they had taken the bus from Bulgary, i heard ppl saying that they travelled miles and miles from countries all over the world, just to follow DM in their whole tour.
So stop complaining that you lost 60 euros on the ticket (and that u ll eventually get back) or that u spent 2 hours searching for a parking space and think of those ppl who spent much more money and time than you, and just hope Dave gets better…
*sigh*

Anonymous 2 | 5/13/2009, 10:31 am EST

To Anonymous. Maybe you should first learn Greek (at least 10 words) and then you are allowed speak about our English. Still this is not the issue.
The issue is that we are all disappointed that we did not seen DM performing live. We all love DM and wishing all the best to Dave. With reference to Didi Musik, the only thing I have to say is that I personally will not forget what happened because something went wrong yesterday. Illness is one thing, bad organization is another.

Dear all,

i was the one to had yesterday the sad obligation to translate the bad news to you regarding the cancellation of the concert.

Today i resigned from didimusic as i do not share nor support, shady and other acts of my company owner and former boss, co-owner of the teravibe venue.

He is a dangerous man with questionable and totaly negative motives against human rights, people in general and anything else around this, if you know what i mean.

I cannot and will not elaborate any further, as my personal safety (anyway it’s already been threatened) will be in danger from this guy.

The only thing i can assure you is that teravibe owner Mr L. , new very well about the health problem of Dave, and he would not give the green light for the sad announcement, until he was sure, that even the last person that had to walk almost 5 km in some cases, was IN the venue until 21:30.

There were people with RF equipment in a range of 10km informing him about the traffic and the expected number of attendees.

The only motive he had, was profit and nothing else.

Even for the announcement, his no1 priority was to make sure, we give enough hope to the attendees that the concert would take place the day after (this was already made clear as impossible by Dave’s physician earlier on Tuesday around 16:30 as the Istanbul concert was also canceled at the same time).

He just wanted to avoid on the spot massive compensations and complains…

This is all i know…

When I heard that Dave was ill I was really disappointed and thought, shit, too bad for him and for us. However, the truth always comes out one way or another. Please don’t let the didi music people or depeche mode representatives lead you to believe that the show was cancelled because Dave was ill. While I was in front of the stage, waiting eagerly for the show to begin, a friend of mine had to be rushed to the clinic because he (truly) had some problem with his stomach. While he was there he heard people shouting for the oxygen because there was a crisis. Then, to his astonishment, the doctor told him that he shouldn’t be sad for missing the concert because it wouldn’t take place. The reason for that was that Mr.Gahan had an overdose and it was impossible for them to bring him back to his senses. They also advised my friend not to make a big deal out of it because there would be a riot! At the same time, a bus blocked the view at the entrance of the clinic so that no one could see Dave being transferred to the hospital. My friend went to the clinic approximately at 8 o’clock just after Puressence finished their performance. So, yes, the people in charge knew it earlier on that there would be no concert, but left us standing there like idiots. I am a huge DM fan and I am so disappointed that Dave was so irrespectful to the people that spent so much money to see him. If he can’t handle drugs, he shouldn’t use them, especially if he is going to let thousands of people down.
I just wish that didi music people and dm reps were more honest with the people that had been waiting for this concert for months. They should be ashamed of themselves, and I am seriously thinking of not attending any of the concerts they organize ever again. And I expect to get a full refund for my ticket since I didn’t go to the concert to hear Motor or Puressence, but just DM.

Dave was already ill from 4pm and at 7pm they knew that the show was going to be cancelled. Unfortunately they kept all of us fans until 930pm in high expectations since the organisers were still selling tickets even last minute on-site at the concert. From one of the persons backstage (names will not be mentioned) the rumour came out that Dave also had a serious row with his wife, on top of his gastrenteritis. This is really bull. I’ve been following DM around and listening to them from the early 80s when they started back then with Vince Clark and with Alan Wilder and yesterday cancellation was a huge disappointment. No offense taken, we all want Dave and DM to be well but dont consider us fans stupid kids whom you can just shove in a corner giving us hope that it might be rescheduled for 13th May 2009 when they are due to play in Turkey on the 14th May!!!! No way the concert was going to be held. It was just a cool move by the organisers to make sure the over 30000 fans did not wreck the scene and just exit in melancholy hoping for a rescheduling. Having seen the tour dates for the remainder of 2009 and with an ultra tight schedule, I guess its ’stuff it’ for the Greek fans. They made some free cash just like that. Again, this attack is not intended for the band but for the organisers Didimusic.
Truly disappointing especially for us older fans. Guess we threw our money in the wind buying tickets (VIP) for this show. Just some courtesy is all we asked for from the organisers, but then again they are only out for the quick cash. I honestly don’know if me and my mates will be going to any DM concerts anymore after this. Were planning on flying and seeing them in Germany and in UK but guess there’s no point.
Truly, disappointed.
Mike, Athens, Greece.

DM played in Kansas City on the last tour and they made it thru three songs before Dave threw down his microphone and stormed off. No explanation and no refund. Poor Martin tried to carry on and sing lead but it wasn’t happening. If this happens again on this tour in Denver, I’m done with them in the future. I understand that they are just people and people get sick but some thoughtfulness would be a nice counter to the rock-star attitude. Get Well Dave

for rest from Ymusic:
Turkish organizers also announced late Wednesday that they were canceling the band’s Istanbul concert..

“Due to circumstances beyond our control, the Depeche Mode concert will not take place on May 14,” the organizers, Purple Concerts, said in a statement on their Web site..

Purple Concerts was not immediately reachable, but Turkey’s Anatolia news agency said Gahan would go to the United States for treatment and that concerts in Bucharest, Romania, on Saturday and Sofia, Bulgaria, next Monday might also be canceled.

They held us there, in order to consume/pay/drink/buy/pay/drin k/consume etc although they knew since 4 afternoon that Dave is ill.

“mike, athens” and “DM – athens” – are you fuckin crazy to talk shit like that??Is it Dave’s fault that he got ill?? You what, truly think that he (and the rest of the band) are enjoying this situation?? OK, you are disappointed and upset (everybody would be), but WTF – pour this shit onto the organizers (if they really knew much earlier that the show will be cancelled), but not onto DM! Or maybe you have never been ill??

Anonymel | 5/13/2009, 4:53 pm EST

The official announcement says: depeche mode
05.13.2009

Depeche Mode have been forced to cancel two shows on their ‘Sounds of the Universe’ tour, yesterday’s show in Athens (May 12) and tomorrow’s show in Istanbul (May 14), due to the illness of singer Dave Gahan.

Dave fell ill with a severe bout of gastroenteritis shortly before he was due onstage in Athens which resulted in his immediate hospitalization.

mike, athens | 5/13/2009, 5:01 pm EST

DM girl, first of all relax and hold your horses girl. And don’t put me in the same league as DM – athens!!
We are all disappointed at the fact that they knew Dave couldn’t possibly get on stage and perform from as early as 7 pm! We all have gotten sick, but at least if they really cared about us maybe a short announcement by Martin or Andrew would have really helped to ease the pain we all felt from the two representatives explaining the situation. Plus the fact that the woman who translated in Greek what DM’s re said should take some english classes as she really went on adding her own stuff. Now relax and cool it. I’ve been listening to DM since they started their career heading out from Basildon, Essex, and been going to DM concerts and shows since 1985 so don’t come on to me with that attitude. Please. Thank you.

luckyme | 5/13/2009, 5:22 pm EST

That terravibe ‘venue’ is a farce. It’s situated many klms outside of Athens, in the middle of nowhere, without any public transport around. The only way there is by car, and even then you have to walk several miles to the venue/dump, simply because they didn’t bother shelling out a few extra bucks for some parking spots. Screw didimusic!!! Boycott the pricks, along with every other terravibe concert. Why don’t organizers just use one of the many useless [since the 04 Games] venues they have, that have now become Athens’ ‘modern ruins’ that house the homeless and trolls? $$$$, that’s why. And even though terravibe is LITERALLY in the middle of nowhere and costs organisers next to nothing, they still overprice all their concert tickets. To hell with them, I say. BOYCOTT TERRAVIBE!! No matter how much you love artists performing there, just don’t go. Stop feeding the greedy pricks!

oh, and btw, the reason my screenname is ‘luckyme’ is because I didn’t buy tickets for this concert. As much as I looooove DM, there was no way I was gonna go through the TERROR-Vibe experience again. Once several years ago to see Black Sabbath was more than enough. It was an experience I’ll never forget, for all the wrong reasons. Ugh, what a shithole. Did I mention the acoustics there suck too? Of course, that’s just the cherry on top.

Gil | 5/13/2009, 7:38 pm EST

To all Greek DM fans. Don’t know if this could change your opinion but just letting you know that while performing in Tel Aviv, a few days ago, the group has been told about the unexpected death of Fletcher’s father, just a few hours before the show was about to begin. They decided to perform as planned with all the sorrow, and gave their best.

I think it was just too much for them.

Mel | 5/13/2009, 9:27 pm EST

I understand a lot of people are dissapointed. I mean, you buy your tickets, you wait in anticipation, you make it to the venue, and then no concert… I get it!!
That being said, shouldn’t Dave’s health be a priority? As much as some of us view him as a God, he is after all human. I’m sure he would have performed if he was able.

Gil is right, the band did perform right after hearing that Andy’s dad passed away. DM is facing a lot of issues right now and we just need to be supportive as fans and understanding as human beings. Please keep them in your thoughts as they recover from their illnesses and personal losses.

dmfan4life | 5/13/2009, 10:18 pm EST

DM girl to mike, athens | 5/13/2009, 10:27 pm EST

OK, Mike. Sorry. I really used lots of shitty words in my comment. But man, what is that?! “DM, you let us all down again! And got richer for free off our money. Thanks for nothing.” I just cannot understand how you can write things like that. You think that they had to perform in spite of the fact that Dave was feeling bad? Or what? And as for all of yours money – as far as I read in the announcement on Didi music site, you all will be refunded if there is no other show later. So what is the problem then? As I said earlier, of course we can understand you and your big disappointment of the whole evening, but c’mon, everything can happen, DM are not robots, they are humans and have the right to get ill sometimes. Don’t you think that the fact of them deciding to go on stage in Tel Aviv after the news about Fletch’s dad shows that it was a really serious reason why they did not show up in Athens?

DM girl to mike, athens | 5/13/2009, 10:34 pm EST

So send the organizers to hell (for the reasons mentioned in many comments below), but not DM. I hope your day today is better than the previous one and the disappointment will slowly go away.

IAMAMAZED | 5/13/2009, 11:22 pm EST

I am reading these posts and cannot believe what I am reading! Unfortunately the band needed to tend to Dave, so don’t think DM treated the fans with such malace. Dave is not doing drugs anymore and has been sober for quite some time. Yoga is his new drug. Someone gets sick and this is how people react? Shame on you! Before you go on spreading false information, hold onto your drama and wait for the truth. These posts are horrible and you call yourself fans? Where are the good will wishes? No class anymore.

Get well soon | 5/14/2009, 2:51 am EST

Well, I was also in Terra Vibe and to tell you the truth the first thing that came to my mind was drugs. And I will explain the reason. First of all I did not know that he was clean for so long and that is good for him. But I have recently past gastroenteritis and to tell you the truth it did not come suddenly, I felt bad for a long time. What I want to say is that it is very Murphy’s law situation if this happened really. I try to imagine it…the DM logo is on, they make some sound check with the drums and other stuff…and suddenly he feels bad at 9:15. So most of you would thing that something else is going wrong. So finally, I hope it is only gastroenteritis and not something worse, secondly if most of were inside ther with all this tention you would not shout “Dave get well” but somthing more like “Com’on get the hell out of here” etc. We have problem with DiDiMusic because they are a bunch of cons…Have a nice day and cut the crap by accusing each other…

The truth about what happened | 5/14/2009, 2:59 am EST

If Terra Vibe and Didi Music organisers do not make an announcement within the hour about getting the entire money back for the cancelled Depeche Mode concert we will destroy their premises wherever they may be and trash the property of the people (we know who all you criminals are) and start to kill you one by one. You are fucking criminals the lot of you even though you new the Depeche Mode concert would be cancelled since 16:00, you allowed people to enter the venue (40,000) people. Your are sick, criminals and disgusting. You and your damn families should be taken care of appropriately you bloody bastards treating people who have paid money as though they are shit. We are warning you, if you do not make an announcement by 11 am Greek time, we will start destroying all yoyr property, machines, houses, cars one by one.

Do not ever count on getting your money back from the organisers as far as concerns this concert. Didi Music are perhaps amongst the worst extortionists in Greece

Anonymous | 5/14/2009, 3:22 am EST

DM girl, things are slowly starting to ease off. You’re right regarding the organisers DidiMusic, they are a bunch of cons. I truly believe DM will try and re-schedule their concert in Athens until the end of the year, or possibly make it the last gig in their tour. Hope Dave and the guys are alright and lets hope DidiMusic will not try and con us out of our money. I don’t care about the cash as long as I can see DM perform live. Might book tickets for one of their shows later on during the summer to see them outside Greece. Well, have a nice day DM girl and stay true.

Dave was indeed ill and was treated in the Metropolitan Hospital in Athens. This is 100% sure. He suffered from gastrenteritis.
Shame on DIDI music and Terravibe, for they are responsible for what happened. They are a bunch of assholes!

BOYCOTT Didimusic and Terravibe! Smash them!

Anonymous | 5/14/2009, 6:10 am EST

I was at the ‘Metropolitan’ hospital in Athens at 15.00pm when Dave was ready to leave it. No one in public succeed to have a chance to see him since we saw his manager (Jonathan Kessler) minutes before, pressing stiflingly the employees to help them leave the building from the underground parking. I talked to some nurses and they told me that only few people from the employee managed to have access into his room (his wife Jennifer, in a general ‘loaded’ mood, had the room access control) but those little said that Dave was looking absolutely fine! Some paparazzi at the parking exit told me also that there were Martin and Andy in the black jeep that carried Dave (with Jennifer and his manager) possibly to the airport.

Our best wishes to Dave. I hope he recovers soon. As we said before these things happen. Our only problem has to do with DiDi.

Depeche Mode have to make a statement and denounce DiDi’s methods (ticket prices, and the fact that DiDi LIED to the people cause Dave got transfered to the hospital at 6 o’clock).

DiDi spreads the rumors about drugs etc. Don’t believe this b*llsh*t

Anonymous | 5/14/2009, 7:05 am EST

Rumours are rumours but @ 8.30 i met him during the meet & greet backstage – photos are not lying unfortunately…i’m very sorry for him!

DM old timer | 5/14/2009, 7:38 am EST

Unfortunately, I don’t think they will pick up on the rumours and make statements about whether or not DG used or did not use. Greece is too marginal a market for them (even though they are huge lately, but their success came relatively late in their career). In addition, if they were to make statements they would need to be substantial enough to be reproduced in Greece. It’s not a coincidence that official reporting both here and abroad has been fully in line with DiDI statements.

However, if they DO decide to do something, they have a lot to gain, especially from an ethical standpoint. If they want to and can prove that they expressed an upper limit on ticket prices, that DG fell ill earlier than when DiDI stopped selling tickets etc., they stand a lot to gain. I would certainly want to see them live (for the 12th time, I think), as would many others if it were medially promoted.

Do keep in mind that DiDi stand to lose a lot if problems were to start involving a world-class name such as DM. So they’ve probably already planned for a successful execution of their summer program, which will not be easy to change.

daughter | 5/14/2009, 7:53 am EST

stop with the speculations, people…especially about drugs, for fuck sake!As for Mr Anonymous, stop whining.

dave, get well soon.

kx | 5/14/2009, 8:24 am EST

one thing that i didnt see being commented is how well-behaved the audience left the place. the worse could have happened. there were over 35000 people there.
and most people including me are sad they didnt get to see them.
so get well wishes to dave..

didi and teravibe has to be boycoted.

i avoid the place like the plague, but i have said that i ll have to go if depeche mode come, so i did.

depeche mode if they come back to do the show, they should do it in a stadium and not with didi.

i dread to think the scenario that didi wont do a full refund..because i heard that too.
we ll have to take some legal action. for once!

stop didi music from cheating | 5/14/2009, 8:43 am EST

orginizing a consert doesnt only mean to build a stage and bring the musicians. if you target to about 30.000 people you are also obliged to ensure their access to the place. There was absolutelly no public transport, so we all had to take our cars, which leaded to an unbelievable traffic: it took me 3 hours to get there (40 min. is the normal time) + 30 min. walking. They just take advantage our love for musik and bands, and the fact that in Greece there isn’t neither any state controll of their function nor any public reaction. I will not visit Terra Vibe again, i can’t stand being deceived by fucking didi.

Recoil9999 | 5/14/2009, 8:55 am EST

Gore and Fletcher should have came to the stage, apologize for behalf of Dave, and perform 3-4 songs wich Martin sings anyway.
That would be a clear explanation and could make them local heroes.
They didn;t show any respect at all to the audience.
As about Didi is concerned, same old shit…

Rumours are rumours but @ 8.30 i met him during the meet & greet backstage – photos are not lying unfortunately…i’m very sorry for him!

Photos may be photoshopped and anyway what’s all this craze about writing messages as an anonymous person. Why don’t people have the balls to spell out their real names – what are people so frightened of these days. For God’s sake. All I want is for Didi and Terra Vibe criminals because that’s what they are – they even traffick drugs – is to come out and offer a sincere apology on national televison about the way they treat people who pay to go to concerts, about ripping people off with extortionist pricing Euros 60,80 and 100, about exploiting illegaly a plot of land that belongs to the Parnitha wildlife center, about never bothering to have proper, secure, healthy sanitation facilities, toilets-rubbish bins-recycling-picking up refuse unfortunately left behind by many pigs who seem to think they are human beings instead of taking their rubbish home like I do, A formal apology with respect to cancelling the concert even though they knew about it a few hours prior to commencing, about never ever offering proper and safe parking and walking facilites – access to and from concert centres, having a venue far off from any suitable and frequent public transport, about as of yet not even contemplating to offer any type of compensation whatsoever-they have gone into hiding and about FINALLY DECIDING THAT THEY HAVE TO TREAT PEOPLE WHO GO TO CONCERTS AS PROPER HUMAN BEINGS WITH PROPER HUMAN RIGHTS. Thankfully, already as it is being heard from various sources in the UK, Depeche Mode will be suing Didi Music and Terra Vibe for a very large sum of money as they stipulate that both Gore and Fletcher were willing to do 3-5 songs including “A Question of Lust” and then re-apologise agin for Dave Gahan’s illness – because he was indeed indisposed with intestine and stomach etc..and that the promoters Didi music et al. did not allow for this and already about 400 individuals are also taking Didi Music and Terra Vibe to court over the scam of their behaviour on Tuesday night. Good on you, criminals should never be allowed to get away with anything like that and all the above I have said. Finally Depeche Mode it is being rumoured, will play either on July 14th 2009 or on 22 May 2010 at the Olympic Stadium in Athens and are looking at guaranteeing the following:

1. concert only in Athens Olympic Stadium
2. promotion to be done by Depeche Mode themselves through viable and experienced UK concert organisers and via independent neighbourhood record stores throughout Greece including the islands and remote regions.
3. be it for the likelihood of the 2009 or 2010 concert dates, tickets which people have in their possession for the concert that was never held, will be valid whether for 2009 or 2010 concert.
4. A further 40 thousand tickets to go on sale for a price of Euro 40.

This is all the news so far.

depeche fan | 5/14/2009, 10:05 am EST

Unfortunately it WAS all about drugs. I live in Athens and people who work in the hospital said that he was in a terrible condition…

ST | 5/14/2009, 10:09 am EST

What i would really like from Dave Gahan and the rest of the band, is at least a press conference for the FANS (which are one of the best here in Greece since the 80s). Just don’t leave us like this, with no explanation what so ever because everyone is speculating anything they want and THAT’S not fair for the Group or anyone else.We deserve MORE THAN THAT.

olga | 5/14/2009, 10:22 am EST

i don’t give a shit if Dave took drugs or if he was wasted or if he fought with someone.all i know is that i couldn’t wait for the concert and it is unacceptable that they made the announcement so late at night…and one last thing ….Dave if can’t take it the don’t take them…this is fucking bullshit!

ST | 5/14/2009, 10:32 am EST

Terra vibe is not suitable for holding concerts….the way it is. It doesn’t have the space or the organization needed to treat 30 – 40 thousand people. NOT SUITABLE (to visit by car you have to park illegally outside on a main road, how crazy is that) The funny thing is that i went but the truth is that i swore never to go there again except for Depeche Mode is that ironic or what????????

Anonymous | 5/14/2009, 10:39 am EST

Yeah, apparently everyone has a friend that works at the Metropolitan hospital. Stop. Spreading. Rumours. Let’s hope Gahan is OK, and burn Didi music down.

This is no longer about DM, this things happen, people get sick and iam sure they will give us a perfect concert in the future….THE PROBLEM NOW IS THE ORGANIZATION….What are we going to do??? THEY FUCKED US BIG TIME…for sure the are laughing at us right now in their office drinking frappe and smoking Marlboro light!!!!!!an counting money, planning trips and new houses in Mykonos.I will never visit Terra Vibe again and neither should you, i think there should be a big demonstration outside Didi music, 30000 people …should be nice…!!!! Take care everybody and get well soon Dave…you rock..!!!

gastrenteritis they say at the last minuite before Dave came on stage.
if you have gastrenteritis you can’t leave the toilet. He plugged his ass

The only place for DM to perform in Greece is the Olympic Stadium and not that shithole terravibe park.

I will not believe anything they say from Depeche Mode..
‘Depeche Mode’ showed us who they are, we are not stupid ok,
the other from the band couldn’t go on stage and speak to us.
I believe that they were ashamed and frightened because
something very bad was involved.
They left Greece fast and afraid of the Greek law.
Didi music used that to make money……………

To most of the above posters – why don’t you buy some wood and go build a bridge and get over it.

It really pisses me off that you are teating Dave (a former drug user) like this. He cannot get sick without evil shitheads spreading all sorts of rumours. Gastroentrintis is a horrible illness that takes some time to get over.

I can understand everyones anger but really think that you are aiming it at the wrong people. Try the promoters, etc. The last thing a person who is sick needs is half-truthed gossip mongers spreading all sorts of LIES to make themselves feel good.

To Dave – get well soon

Greek DM fan | 5/16/2009, 12:55 pm EST

I think that everyone of us that we love DM and lived with their music and the spirit of them, we must support them and not making silly (at least…) talks…. .
Many of you that tolking about Depeche Mode they dont know even who Davi is….

All of us that we spent our money for these VERY expensive endeed tickets we will take them back sooner or later we have justise in greece you know before many other european contries did not anything about this…..

“It’s a quastion of time….” to have real answers.

We love you Dave and i will alway be behind the weel for you.

THANK YOU.

chris | 5/17/2009, 3:08 am EST

i’d decided not to go ’cause of the overated ticket price..
but almost all my friends were there and indeed is really sad to see that only a few fans worry about dave’s health.

this might look weird to the non greek ppl who read the comments here but you gotta understand this:

we’ve taken lots of SHIT attending concerts! we are SO fed up with DIDI music and the rest of the few ppl who monopilise this industry. they make us pay LOTS of money, they treat us like animals, you have to fight to buy a beer, no parking lots, discusting facilities..

some might remember that in a previous terra vibe d.m. gig, DIDI had convinced many ppl not to take cars there, but transfer via busses that did provided (not free of course!). so when the fans were ready to depart from terra vibe, they were informed that only half the busses were there, and they had to wait in the darkness until very late at night, for the busses to go back to athens with the first group of ppl and then come back to get the rest!!!!!

we are talking of didi music who make FORTUNE out of our ticket money!!! they are scambags who take advantage of our love for live music! NOBODY is standing up for the fans’ rights, radio producers are licking didi’s fat ass..

i’m sorry about dave’s health problem, which i know it’s true, but you gotta realise how fed up we are about being treated like this by didi music.

dimitra matsouka has been responsible for many shitty things that have happened, i seriously worry about her even showing her presence in events, for sure somebody is going to kick her ass sooner or later.. and she deserves it BIG TIME!!!

of course didi WON’T give the ticket money back soon! just make the calculation, 34.000 x 60… they have the money in the bank to get the interests, and this way they’ll gain even more!! they are bastards!!

Master | 5/18/2009, 6:07 am EST

Quoted from Depechemode.com
“On Tuesday, May 12th, 2009, at 9pm (local time), the sudden feeling of physical discomfort that hit the singer of Depeche Mode, Dave Gahan, just a few minutes before going on stage for the band’s performance, resulted in his immediate transfer to the hospital and the postponement of the band’s show.”

He got sick just a few minutes before going on stage meaning organisers did not know his situation early as many people claim. Anyway, I am sure the organisers are scumbags but please try to separate Greece as a country from inadequate concert organisers. The fact that DiDi music are ripping people does not make Greece a third world country no more than madoff scandal makes US a third world country.

Dr. Benway | 5/18/2009, 9:24 am EST

Dr. Benway | 5/18/2009, 9:41 am EST

There are reports of Gahan engaging in bizarre,drug-induced behavior during the US tour in 2006, so it seems Dave has been playing the public instead of the angel for a good while now.

TONY | 5/18/2009, 11:42 am EST

metropolitan hospital sources in Athens said that David has a serious health problem, but is something that he can fight.Test he made there saw something that he did not knew.He needs rest, and probably the tour will be canceled.Wish him the best

Doc Benway | 5/18/2009, 1:51 pm EST

The really funny part is Gahan sitting there doing all these media interviews about how all he’s into is “junk tv” or “yoga” or “kaballah” (just like Britney!) all the while being stoned out of his gourd while he’s saying this malarkey. Bands have learned to *never* tell the rock media the truth when it comes to drugs these days, and who can blame them?

Doc Benway | 5/18/2009, 1:52 pm EST

“Metropolitan hospital sources in Athens said that David has a serious health problem, but is something that he can fight.” Like the war on drugs, you mean? Where is your link for this info?

Yes, and he has been for awhile. It’s not like he’s going to make a media announcement about it or anything, like some of these idiots seem to think. Of course he’s going to deny it — wouldn’t you?

Kylie | 5/21/2009, 12:36 am EST

I watch DM over 20 years! and i was in Athens concert. I think its really human someone to get sick. And I believe that Dave could not play theater being clean all this years. Give him a brake! All about fighting is out of question. But cancelling so many concerts! I don’t know… Maybe the problem is not only a gastraederities but something more serious …. hope not.. It’s not our business to judge or make stories on Dave. Anyway it’s HIS LIFE you know! I WISH HIM QUICK RECOVERY – Concerning Athens concert money will be given back!

Brian, Houston | 5/21/2009, 9:39 am EST

I am a life long DM fan, but I dont think it is unrealistic for people to suspect a drug relapse. The information and cancelations are suspicious at best. I wouldnt be at all surprised if they cancelled the entire tour. I feel bad for Dave if it is indeed the case, but I dont think it is mean for people to suspect that drugs may be involved. He has a well documented history of drug use and its his burden to bare.

Meh | 5/21/2009, 1:20 pm EST

Dave’s been fooling a lot of you DM’rs for a while now with his yoga and kaballah baloney. Yoga, kaballah and smack, sure.

Dr. Wackadoo | 5/21/2009, 1:59 pm EST

if it were a “serious” illness of some sort, i’m sure the band/DM machine would release his med records to show DG is really and truly clean.

they care about public reaction, but not that much. this is more about getting insurance coverage for for DG. if he is indeed still on dope, his and the band’s premiums will skyrocket. so they’re keeping it as hush hush as possible.

and btw why did he have to be rushed back to nyc for tests for a stomach virus? Turkey isn’t exactly the outer reaches of Mongolia.

Over-the-hill DM fan | 5/21/2009, 6:08 pm EST

Did any of you think that maybe the rest of the band were at the hospital with him and that’s why they did not go onstage, because they weren’t there to go onstage? Or that maybe it was decided that it was not safe to send them out to announce that? Has any other band ever done that before? Where they’ve had to cancel a show and they send band members out to announce it? Honestly, I don’t think it is a good idea nor would I want to see them do that.

And for those at the stadium complaining that Didi kept selling tickets and food and drink, not to defend them, but was it possible they thought he was coming back and that they didn’t get the news that they would not be doing the show until right before they made the announcement onstage?

And for the people complaining that he was “fine and healthy” meeting fans before the show, could it be possible that he was putting on a brave face so as not to ruin their experience of meeting the band? I’ve had gastroenteritis, I felt lousy for a week and then was hit with the worst pain I’ve ever experienced that sent me to the hospital. It took me months to recover my strength. It is nothing to joke about.

And stop with the drug talk. It’s so 1990’s…

Dr. Benway | 5/22/2009, 9:27 am EST

So you DM fans want to shoot the messenger, Dr. Benway, instead of facing up to the truth that your hero is back on the smack? Hey, Aleister Crowley did kaballah, yoga, and smack, and it worked out Ok for him. And Dave is into Crowley and all that new-agey-occultnik kind of stuff. So what exactly is the big surprise that you are getting mad at Dr. Benway about? You are shocked Dave is back on smack? He was on smack during the 2006 tour and got away with it, so he figured why not try again?

I don’t think it’s unreasonable at all to suspect drugs. Anyone who’s been friends with, or had someone in their family who was a user..even if they’d been clean for 20+ years.. would suspect it- and I’m sure Dave knows that. I too have been a fan for over 20 years and I think we all need a healthy dose of reality. I sincerely hope it’s just a sickness, but I’m expecting a full tour cancellation. An addict is an addict- you never “fully” recover- that’s just the way it is. Anyone who thinks otherwise is being unreasonably optimistic. Either way, drugs OR sickness..I hope he takes care of himself.

If dave was back on drugs they wouldn’t be putting out mediocre releases…their best to date was when we was Hi…..

erika | 5/25/2009, 11:29 pm EST

Dave you will be OK, just relax!! DM u r the best!!

A DM Fan | 5/26/2009, 1:19 pm EST

Rumour has it (on another board where “Dr Benway” is posting similar unsubstantiated vitriol) that he is Alan Wilder. This would explain he bitterness and venom I guess.

If that’s the case, just for the record, Recoil seriously sucks and I’m bloody glad you left DM if that’s the sort of stuff you wanted to compose.

Anyway, getting back to Dave, no one has any proof if its drugs or cancer or stomach flu with complications. Until we hear something definite, its probably best to wish him well and hope its nothing too serious. I really hope its not drugs and I really hope its not cancer. Only time will tell I guess, but for sure “Dr Benway” wont tell us anything aside from how much he hates DM.

A DM Fan | 5/26/2009, 1:41 pm EST

Okay, so I got my post criticising “Dr Benway” and saying he had no proof what so ever and probably alteria motives deleted and yet he is allowed to keep his posts which are nothing more than salacious, nasty rumour mongering?

That doesn’t seem right to me at all. But then I guess this post will get deleted too.

Figleaves | 5/26/2009, 2:33 pm EST

Did anyone notice if Dave was wearing his wedding ring ? looking at the concert in Tel Aviv he didn’t have it on ???

IRENE1 | 5/27/2009, 9:32 am EST

I WONDER…..ARE YOU ALL,REAL FANS??

YOU MAKE ME SICK…..

Love Thief | 5/27/2009, 2:00 pm EST

I had gastroentitis (sp?) a few years back. I was bed-ridden for two weeks straight and on nothing but fluids. It took me a good month to get back to feeling 100% OK. And I was 24 at the time. Dave is 47 and has to go through the physical excersion of 2hr shows every other night, so no wonder they’re taking they’re time. One of the reasons I really HATE the internet is because its a platform for small minded sickos to spread their bile. Leave Dave alone, and get a life.

JT | 5/27/2009, 3:42 pm EST

Wow, you people are so cranky! If you’re not even a fan, maybe it’s time to move on and stop spreading your disgusting negativity around like manure. For those us who honestly ARE concerned for Dave’s condition, I hope we will all hear something soon! If DM must cancel this tour, no matter how disappointing that would be, wouldn’t that be better than having him keel over in the middle of it and causing himself even more harm? Remember, everyone, this is still a human being we’re all discussing here. Let’s not take his life for granted, because where would music be without him?

laDMgirl | 5/27/2009, 9:52 pm EST

It’s unfortunate that the management is more interested in filling their pockets with Dave’s money without any regard for his health. There is no other explanation as to why they would not release the whole, full story. Not a bright business move anyway…they know how devoted the fans are and we would much rather hear the truth and let Dave recover in peace so that we can look forward to a concert later in the future. Fans are so tired of this incessant “covering up”! What’s the purpose? If he has cancer, he has a long hard road ahead, he will not be able to perform and we will all be praying for his full recovery. If he has relapsed again, he is in for some treatments and will need some time to recover and regain his strength. In any case, he cannot perform so why lead the fans on. We all have lives and need to plan accordingly. We will be fans no matter what Dave is going through and will wait for him till the end!

So it wasn’t drugs, nor was it a fight with the wife, it was a “low grade malignant tumour”

Anon | 5/28/2009, 9:40 am EST

To the person who asked about Gahan’s wedding ring – he never wears it while on stage – he will never divorce his wife, he is way too obsessed with her! He said she is his reason for living.

Policy of truth……

Depeche Mode are pleased to announce they will restart their interrupted Tour Of The Universe in Leipzig, Germany on June 8th. On May 12th, lead singer Dave Gahan suffered a severe bout of gastroenteritis, leading to his hospitalization and the cancellation of the Athens concert. While in hospital, further medical tests revealed a low-grade malignant tumour in Dave’s bladder, which has since been successfully removed. At doctors’ orders Dave Gahan must take a break until June 8th, to ensure that he makes a full recovery. The Leipzig show on June 8th will be the first concert following Dave’s recovery.

Dave Gahan sincerely thanks his fans for their support, understanding and patience. Depeche Mode deeply regret any problems or inconveniences the cancellations and postponements may have caused.

Are all you bastards who critised Dave and the band feeling ashamed now you know the real extent of Dave’s illness?….you should be as you are not true fans. I have been disgusted and appalled by some of the crap I have read on here.
