Yoko Ono Helps Rock Hall Explore John Lennon’s New York Years

One of the last things visitors will see when “John Lennon: The New York City Years” opens to the general public Tuesday (May 12th) at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Annex in Manhattan almost didn’t make the exhibit, which was curated by Lennon’s widow, Yoko Ono, and Jim Henke from the Rock Hall. It is perhaps the most striking of the items that will be on display through late fall.

(Get a first look at the John Lennon exhibit here.)

It’s a small canvas bag from New York’s St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center, and it’s wrapped in plastic. It contains the clothing Lennon was wearing the night he was murdered, and Ono says she thought long and hard before making the bag the exhibit’s parting shot. The message the bag — and a photo Ono snapped of Lennon’s blood-soaked glasses — sends about gun violence was too powerful to keep private. The message, that more than 932,000 people have died as a result of gun violence since her husband’s murder, was “important for people to see that, and for people to understand what violence is about.”

Ono, dressed in a pin-stripped blazer, shades and a white hat, spoke during a press conference today, and says initially, she figured she “would be criticized” for including the bag, labeled “Patient’s Belongings,” as part of an exhibit celebrating Lennon’s love of the Big Apple, and its influence on his art, his life, and ultimately, his death.

“John loved New York City. When he came here, he felt it was his home, and this is a thorough representation of John’s life in New York,” Ono told reporters of the exhibit, adding that she’s sure Lennon was lonely at times, as he was the only one of the Beatles who resided in Manhattan. “He was head over heels in love with this city, and when you’re in love, you forget you had a past.”

The exhibit features a number of items from the Rock Hall Museum, as well as a museum in Japan. Other items, Ono confessed, came from her closet. Among the treasures on display, fans will find Lennon’s iconic “New York City” muscle shirt (stains and all), a number of collages, self-portraits (including one of Lennon’s as the Statue of Liberty), and handwritten lyrics to songs like “Working Class Hero,” “God” and “Woman is the Nigger of the World,” some scribbled on recording studio and hotel stationary. There’s also the Fender Telecaster Lennon played on stage with Elton John at Madison Square Garden in 1974, rare video footage of Lennon and Ono in New York, and the couple’s official declaration of Nutopia: The Country of Peace.

The exhibit also chronicles Lennon’s fight against deportation, with his green card, his visa, and letters of support from the likes of Dick Clark and Joan Baez.

Ono says the exhibit is the first of its kind, and for those who swing by to take it all in, Yoko has included something to ensure it’s like no other exhibit you’ve experienced. A white phone is affixed to the wall, and the card next to it reads, “A Phone For Peace.” The simple instructions? “When the phone rings, pick it up.” Ono said she’ll be calling the phone, “only when I remember,” to deliver a message of peace to whoever answers, she says.

so, it’s basically the exhibit that was at the rock hall in cleveland a few years ago?

artifcialred | 5/11/2009, 2:57 pm EST

This sounds really cool. I have never been to the Rock Hall or NYC. But John Lennon was one of the greatest of all time. There will never be another and the world is a sadder place without him!!!

cherylheld@raany.com | 5/11/2009, 7:26 pm EST

In answer to above, Robby,
the exhibit was custom designed
by Ralph Appelbaum Associates of New York.

I’ll be going to NYC this summer for the day to just explore like I always do once a year. I am going to try and make this event. I wouldn’t miss it for the world.

Bill | 5/11/2009, 9:36 pm EST

Yeah Robby, sounds like its the same exhibit..only missing the Beatles years…The bloody clothes were on Display in 2000 in Cleveland, as well as the actual bloody glasses. Not sure why they are acting as if it is history making now. They Exhibit in 2000 had from Childhood-Death and everything between and was very impressive.

NYC DAN | 5/11/2009, 10:44 pm EST

How long does it run for?

Ray | 5/12/2009, 9:12 am EST

robby, it is the same one. Fascinating as it may be, this has to be Yoko’s way of trying to keep up with Paul in the publicity department, if that is even remotely possible.

bluuuuhhh | 5/13/2009, 3:06 pm EST

maybe its because its john and yoko’s 40th anniversarey and were pretty much going through the same shit as 40 years ago and a message of peace is a good statement.publicity stunt….riiiiight, not everybody bloodless

Anonymous | 5/14/2009, 1:35 pm EST

Bill, for one: NYC isn’t Cleveland, and for two: history is always history.

I stopped reading at the mention of blood soaked glasses.

auchin | 5/15/2009, 5:54 pm EST

This will be a great follow-up to the currently-running 40th anniversary exhibit of the Montreal “Bed-in for Peace”, now showing free of charge at our Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. And they let you take photos, and write a message of peace on a paper leaf to hang on a tree near the end of the exhibit. Very cool!

Tom | 5/16/2009, 7:58 am EST

She’s full of shit as usual.

Tom | 5/16/2009, 9:00 am EST

Thanks for removing my comment. Who did that? Her publicist? Oh, I forgot, she’s her own publicist.

Marc | 5/16/2009, 5:11 pm EST

Yoko used the blood-stained glasses on her album cover for “Seasons of Glass,” next to a half-full glass of water. I thought it was brilliant and shocking. Robert Hilburn of LA Times in reviewing John & Yoko’s “Double Fantasy” album said something to the effect that he admired Yoko’s contributions (songs) even more than John’s work on the album. I love them both so much for all that they continue to do to influence our world experience.

Anonymous | 5/16/2009, 6:31 pm EST

Does Yoko know she’s not one of the Beatles?

Yoko rocks | 5/17/2009, 9:08 am EST

I used to scratch my head and wonder what I thought of or felt about her. Now, I just love her to death. She is one of the few truly unique people in the world, whatever you think of her music or art. And re: the breaking up the Beatles blah blah: complete BS.

The other thing is, she had an international career in avant garde art before she even met John. He gravitated towards that to add legitimacy to what he was trying to do, not the other way around.

Besides, he loved her.

magusfidelista | 5/18/2009, 8:46 am EST

Aah wouldn’t it be nice if Johnny was around today.

pete | 5/18/2009, 3:39 pm EST

Any mention of the great David Peel in the exibit? Peel played a big part in the early NY years.

bring on the lucie | 5/19/2009, 4:06 am EST

“A powerful message about gun violence”? What a sick joke. How about “a powerful message about CIA violence”? Everyone with half a brian knows Chapman was a patsy.

Martin F | 5/19/2009, 5:05 am EST

Do visit the Saitama, Japan museum to John & Yoko. A great place. Here we love The Beatles and all the peace & love you can get.

Everybody is looking for a new world order, when their is a ancient one already in place. I’m talking about a series of ancient world maps. Maps we’re deciphered off a Mayan temple, Maps that link the ancient world better than our link today. Why better? Because it was a world system. That seemed to work for a long period of time, Our ancients we’re trying to copy those before them. Maps match ancient myths and legends all over the world. Maps are overwhelming proof their was an advanced race of people in our past, and I have the proof. Maps have strong ties with Egypt. Am looking for help showing the world.

This sounds like a really great exibition, I would love to see it. I love & miss John.

Eve | 6/13/2009, 8:42 pm EST

I don’t like the idea of seeing a man’s glasses with his own blood, I love Lennon, so it would be really hard to look at that, why the one he loved (ono) would let this happen?

maryellen viola | 6/14/2009, 5:33 pm EST

I think the Beatles were and still are the best !!!I wished they had stuck around for a couple of years longer , we would have some much more great music to listen to. Oh and i wish John Lennon was still around a great artist and human.

John and Yoko were great and are still great. They used their fame and talent to promote thought!”You don;t take nothing with you but your soul.Think!” And John was the “Irish Beatle” a real poet..I think it is great that john found Yoko,a beautiful womam who was a conceptual artist and shored up John’s confidence to be creative and use art as a positive force. So hats off to her courage. It wasn’t easy for her to lose the love of her life that way. And the act of violence that ended John’s life a scourge all around the world needs to stop. Thank you Yoko.John is looking down on you and is always with you ..Give peace a chance…we love John and you ..Thanks for your efforts and using your position and John’s music to promote an end to violence and promote peace..only love can conquer hate.We believe in love and music.thanks
