Amy Winehouse’s Comeback Gig Plagued By Problems

5/11/09, 3:39 pm EST

Amy Winehouse’s highly anticipated return to the stage at the Caribbean island of Saint Lucia’s Jazz Festival ended prematurely and controversially after “technical difficulties” and a torrential downpour reportedly forced the “Rehab” singer from the stage a more half-dozen songs into her set this weekend. However, according to Clash Music, Winehouse’s performance was flawed well before the weather conditions ended her gig, with light and sound problems overshadowed by Winehouse slumped over a speaker during her Back to Black hit “You Know That I’m No Good.”

Winehouse has spent the past few months on the tropical island as she looks to rebound from a tumultuous marriage and a well-publicized drug habit that threatened to derail what looked to be a promising career following the Grammy-winning success of her second album Back to Black. However, the singer canceled her first comeback performance at this year’s Coachella, and only recently was once again hospitalized with “dehydration.” Still, the singer took the stage at this weekend’s St. Lucia Jazz Festival to disastrous results, struggling to get in sync with her band during the opening number (video above) and at times, like in this YouTube video, looking completely disinterested. After it was announced that Winehouse’s performance was over a mere six songs in, the crowd loudly booed the singer.

“Amy would like to express her disappointment that weather forced the abandonment of her show at the St. Lucia Jazz Festival last night. The set started well, but as the heavens opened, a number of technical difficulties occurred on stage, culminating with the lighting rig failing for two songs,” Winehouse’s spokesperson said following the show. “In addition, rain began to flood the technical wings at the side of the stage which caused sound problems. Amy and the band tried to soldier on but the set had to be cut short.” Winehouse will get another redo on May 31st in London when she performs at a special show honoring her label Island Records.

I do not have any idea what anyone sees in her. Suck it up and play some frickin music.

She just doesn’t get it. Either she really has some permanent brain damage from her several over doses or she is a spoiled child. Either way, no one should allow her to perform again till someday, she gets it. This is coming from a former huge fan of hers. No excuses, no one else would get the chances she has gotten. Get the hook!!! Pathetic!!!

Amy Winehouse was very good, she got my attention in a big way, I’m not easily impressed. But,now, she is just a big mess without showing any talent…where did it go? brain damage?current drug abuse? I pray for her, I also hope she does not waste anyone’s money by getting on the stage again, unless she has regained her talent and can show some respect for fans and her self..I’m once again dissapointed in her…I was saving money to go to St lucia, wasn’t able too, I am now glad I didn’t go, i have better things that I could waste money on.I don’t see anything in her any more..

I hope she can pull herself together. It isn’t easy being an artist especially with such great talent but I hope she can manage.

yourfckingface | 5/12/2009, 1:36 am EST

Sold her soul to the drug dealer.
Most likely to never again write a song worth listening to. Don’t hold your breath waiting for a new album either. (I would LOVE to be wrong!)

I was there in St Lucia inside the sound tent next to Amy’s Mother and another man who was with her. Janis Winehouse I found to be a very respectable woman who while being proud of her daughters success was aware of her self destructive behaviour. I monitored her face for reaction during and after the performance. Her mother was emotionless….almost a hint that she expected this to happen, that Amy was not quite ready for this. Before Janis was wisked off by two associates she handed me a bottle of wine. I wish that nice lady is successful at pulling her daughter away the chasm of death. GOD be with them.

Anyone familiar with Janis Joplin already knows how this story is going to end…

shala -inda-islands | 5/12/2009, 8:52 pm EST

yeah she needs rehab..great singer but she needs it bad

sirloin | 5/12/2009, 10:19 pm EST

She’s doing us a service burnishing her legend like Cobain when he blew his brains out.
As long as the music is good this makes it even better.
Who needs a reasonable artist singing sensible songs?

Les | 5/12/2009, 11:50 pm EST

It sounds like they didn’t bother to rehearse at all. Winehouse sounds like she doesn’t know the song very well, and the band is trying to baby her through it. She should have handed her mic to one the backup singers. They seemed to know what was going on.

she needs to shut her toothless mouth and get in a studio-she should have at least three records out by now. If there is talent there, then get it recorded, jeez, she couldn’t even get the Bond song(1 f-ing song) done and worked on it for EIGHT MONTHS!

Rica | 5/13/2009, 12:14 pm EST

Unwanted dumb caucasian trash.
