News Ticker: Green Day, Kiss, Skynyrd, Henry Lee Summer

5/8/09, 8:54 am EST

  • Green Day have enlisted Franz Ferdinand and the Kaiser Chiefs as the opening acts for the second half of their U.S. summer tour; openers for the first half are still being sorted out, Pitchfork reports. The Kaisers will join Green Day from July 27th at New York’s Madison Square Garden to August 7th in New Orleans, with Franz taking over between Houston’s August 8th date and the tour’s finale, August 25th in Los Angeles.

  • For the Kiss fan who has everything, there are some new action figures coming this August. You can check out unpainted models of the toys at Kiss Online; all four figures — Starchild, Catman, Spaceman, and the Demon — will be released in a limited-edition collectible window box, depicting the band onstage.
  • Lynyrd Skynyrd bassist bassist Donald “Ean” Evans died after a battle with cancer in Mississippi at age 48, the AP reports. Evans joined the band after Leon Wilkeson passed away in 2001.
  • Late-’80s pop singer Henry Lee Summer, the man behind the Top 20 hit “I Wish I Had a Girl (Who Walked Like That)” was arrested Tuesday after tossing drugs from his car during a traffic stop in Indianapolis, according to the Associated Press. He was also charged with one count of obstruction of justice and two counts of resisting law enforcement.

I saw Henry Lee Summer at an outdoor event in Knoxville a few weeks after Stevie Ray Vaughan died (1991?). Have to say I have not seen or heard him since.

Thought he was a good John Melencamp type roots rocker. I wonder if I have his cassette somewhere in my attic

I don’t think we should put a nail in Skynard, good band never dies… Sweet Home Alabama is the undying tune…

Henry Lee Summer: Great songwriter…Great performer. I hope this isn’t the end of his story.

i am fully aware that Henry is going through lots of tough times (aren’t we all?) YET maybe this latest issue with the law is a wake up call for Henry. Maybe he is wanting and/or needing an opportunity to get some help, obviously the previous arrest experience just didn’t do it for him. I have known Henry for many many years, I know he will (as many others know too) finally put his ghosts and personal traumas of the past to rest and look towards the future and what he is capable of accomplishing. As I fondly look back into the past of the
good ole Hank I used to know, I sincerely wish for him, his family, freidns and fans will soon be able to put this behind us and start buying up those tickets for future shows! Hey Hank, get it straightened out ok? I have a soon to be 21 year old son who I was anticipating to show him how you rock the night away in Attica at
Robbys. Keep cool guy as we are wishing you speedy problem solving.
