Jack White Says New White Stripes “Won’t Be Too Far Off”

5/8/09, 10:07 am EST

When Jack White announced he was starting up another new band, the Dead Weather, earlier this year, White Stripes fans wondered when they’d see another album of Jack and Meg songs. But now White says that with drummer Meg overcoming the anxiety issues that derailed a tour in September 2007, he doesn’t think new White Stripes material will be “too far off. Maybe next year.” This is obviously amazing news for the band’s fans, who initially suspected the Stripes’ hasty withdrawal from the road meant splitsville. “Nothing of the sort,” Jack tells Music Radar.

White says the sudden return to the road took its toll on Meg, “and we had to take a break.” White tells Music Radar that he was on tour with the Raconteurs for about a year before resuming business with the Stripes, but “Meg had come from a dead-halt for a year and went right back into that madness,” he says. “Meg is a very shy girl, a very quiet and shy person. To go full-speed from a dead-halt is overwhelming.” Meg is now engaged to Jackson Smith, the son of Patti Smith and the MC5’s Fred “Sonic” Smith.

“People don’t really understand. They think you go up on stage and you’re having a blast, like you’re partying or some shit,” White continues. “That’s not the case. It’s hard work to go on tour.” As for what fans can expect from the next White Stripes studio offering, White says its too early to say, but that he and Meg “had recorded a couple of songs at the new studio, [and] I talked to her about coming by” this summer, after the Dead Weather does some summer shows.

(Check out the many guises of Jack White.)

In February, Jack and Meg took the stage together for the first time in two years to bid farewell to Conan O’Brien’s late-night show before he took off for L.A. to host The Tonight Show. O’Brien spoke to Rolling Stone about his special relationship with the duo, who appeared on his stage many times: “There has always been a childlike silliness to our show, and I’d like to think there’s been a silly sweetness to our show. There’s a sweetness to the White Stripes — there’s the hard rock but there’s this sweetness that I think resonates a little bit with our show and it’s always been a good fit.”

What’s with all the hate?

Imonna go put on Icky Thump and ENJOY IT.

Neldom | 5/8/2009, 11:37 am EST

If you don’t care about the WS. Don’t you think the name of the article would have let you know not to bother reading it. Let alone take your time to leave a comment. Personally whether or not Meg is a crappy drummer, Jack is greatly gifted as a guitarist and a songwriter.

Nita | 5/8/2009, 11:40 am EST

I agree… Why all the hate? Jack White is extremely talented.

I love all music he makes and can’t wait for a new White Stripes album.

jay | 5/8/2009, 11:55 am EST

saying the Stripes suck basically shows you have no real taste in music. Your’e *ucking out and Im *ucking in!

GG | 5/8/2009, 12:17 pm EST

all the haters must have shown up here because they got bored with defending trent reznor. and by the way, trent says that even though the white stripes haven’t even written the new record yet he hates it already. check back tomorrow to see what he has to say about the new marcy playground release.

KJ | 5/8/2009, 12:46 pm EST

Just because Meg has her own style hardly makes her suck.

Swingline | 5/8/2009, 12:53 pm EST

Classic GG, hahahaha

Andre | 5/8/2009, 1:04 pm EST

Meg isn’t a great drummer. She’s raw and authentic. If you don’t see the beauty in that, then you’re missing the point.

Go buy a Van Haggar album or some sh1t!

god of guitarists | 5/8/2009, 1:21 pm EST

is poser even a word anymore.
i surely don’t use it.
people put down the ws because
they’re popular. if they we’re under-
ground like the replacements we’re
in the 80’s
you wouldn’t even here about them
here. maybe the replacements was a
bad example.
if jack white is so untalented and
a “poser” then how come every kid
i ask what was the first riff he
ever learned to play on guitar is
no longer smoke on the water, but
seven nation army?

Frank Jones | 5/8/2009, 1:37 pm EST

She’s not Keith Moon or John Bonham “great.”

She is Meg White “great.”

Roy | 5/8/2009, 1:53 pm EST

Best news ever!!!! White Stripes keep R&R alive!!!

pat | 5/8/2009, 2:01 pm EST

go see them live and then tell me that they suck…

fgkfkk | 5/8/2009, 2:20 pm EST

I hope it sounds garage rock-y like their debut

Andre | 5/8/2009, 2:24 pm EST

Good luck getting a ticket to see them live. They sell out within hours … because the suck so much?

Get a copy of Blackpool Lights.

Jooolene … Joleeeeene.

Anonymous | 5/8/2009, 2:26 pm EST

Incredibly excited. By the way, haters, I agree that Icky Thump was a bit of a let down (sort of), but Get Behind Me Satan is absolutely incredible. Also, glad to hear that he’ll be recording this one in his own studio, as Icky Thump sounded a little bit too polished for my White Stripes’ taste. Let’s also not forget how fucking good the songs on the Conquest EP were.

mark | 5/8/2009, 3:26 pm EST

their last two albums are that good. but i think they are amazing live. i think they have 7 albums the fans need to chill and let take a break.

mark | 5/8/2009, 3:27 pm EST

their last two albums arent that good. but i think they are amazing live. i think they have 7 albums the fans need to chill and let take a break. quality over quantity people.

The Hater | 5/8/2009, 3:42 pm EST

How can anyone hate the White Stripes? How is it possible?

Lee Harvey | 5/8/2009, 3:47 pm EST

How funny that someone trying to insult would post “no nothing.” These morons can’t even spell. Must be Republicans.

Bummed | 5/8/2009, 3:48 pm EST

Whose Meg crush is crushed since she became engaged? Her sex appeal is too underrated!

richard hurtz | 5/8/2009, 4:08 pm EST

they aint no warhorse but they dont offend me. i dont cringe when i hear their music. so that settles it. i say they are okay to like. the white stripes are not from worchester mass. that is not my problem

poedunk | 5/8/2009, 4:35 pm EST

Yippeekiyiyay mothaf*ckas!

Jungleland2 | 5/8/2009, 5:28 pm EST

I still think The White Stripes have at least one more great record in them. The last one was just ok but GBMS and Elephant are my favorites.

BTW, The Replacements WERE embraced by Rolling Stone even though they sold way less than White Stripes.

Like Westerberg, People will be sad that they missed out on Jack White when he was in his prime (which I think he still is)

SATAN | 5/8/2009, 5:53 pm EST

you people are stupid, when icky thump came out all of you were on his D!(k. you didn’t like the james bond song so you all decide to talk sh!t. you’re all a bunch of sheep, following the same stupid trend. by the way, meg white is a powerful drummer, and does what is best for the songs to sound good.

Chris | 5/8/2009, 5:54 pm EST

For all the haters of The White Stripes, just listen to the sheer brilliance of “White Blood Cells”, “Elephant”, and “Get Behind Me Satan”. Those will show how they are the best band of today. Fuck all of those shitty bands like Nickelback and Creed that are out today. Jack White and The White Stripes are rock ‘n’ roll and they are saving it from shit rock of today’s bands.

SATAN | 5/8/2009, 7:32 pm EST

Well said Chris

dedalus | 5/8/2009, 7:49 pm EST

Mmmmm Meg. Too bad her band sucks.

dude | 5/8/2009, 8:05 pm EST

JW is a dolt. I’ve always found him overrated. You wanna hear a great male-female two-piece, listen to the Royal Trux album Cats and Dogs, and stop worshipping this false idol. The Greenhornes RULE. Please reunite.

You're all a bunch of morons | 5/8/2009, 10:11 pm EST

White stripes release one “bad” album and they’re finished?? Nonsense. Icky Thump was a weaker effort than the previous 3 albums but gimme a break. I saw them at MSG and the 2 of them had that SOLD out crowd by the balls….plus Rag & Bone and Catch Hell Blues are two of the best songs they ever wrote…Meg is the perfect musical Ying to Jacks Yang…..here’s hoping Jack and Meg make their Exile on Main St for the next one…

yay WS! | 5/9/2009, 1:39 am EST

you haters have no taste in music

Dee | 5/9/2009, 1:44 am EST

Great news that they’ll be back, but I sure wish it was this year. With the cancellation of the Icky Thump tour, it will end up being five whole years between live shows. That’s if they even do a tour next year, which I am fervently praying that they will. Best band in the world, period. And the live shows are especially awesome, like nothing else out there.

Regarding Icky Thump, I think it was one of the greatest albums in rock history; I liked it better than Get Behind Me Satan, and almost as much as Elephant. But for anyone who seriously wants to understand The White Stripes, you need to get their first two albums, The White Stripes and De Stijl. That right there is the original seed, the essence, the encapsulated pure core of what this band is all about. After that, it’s all a beautiful, creative, brilliant elaboration of that pure essence.

Oh, and all you “haters” out there: sorry, but you’re so pathetic. Could your bitter, resentful envy of Jack White’s genius be any more painfully obvious? The White Stripes are the most critically acclaimed band of this decade. (according to the Critically Acclaimed website, which compiles statistics from music reviews.) And Jack’s “other” band, The Raconteurs, are also up there. Rolling Stone named The White Stripes the best live band in the world. Venerable music critics like Robert Hilburn have voiced their astonishment at Jack White’s prolific genius and nuclear rock god charisma, and presented him as the rock messiah of the present era, breathing new life into rock’n'roll. Musical giants from Bob Dylan to Paul McCartney to Jimmy Page to Keith Richards — and more — have all had high praise for Jack’s prodigious musical talent and accomplishments.

But no, all that laudatory acclaim does not at all sway the resentful little twerps who have nothing more coherent or intelligible to say than “they suck!” Suggestion to the haters: first, get a brain; then try to use it in a meaningful manner, to express coherent thoughts that actually reflect something about reality, as opposed to spewing forth the inner muck and turmoil of your dark, tormented soul. That’s how to engage in a meaningful dialog about music, see. If all you want to do is express your inner emotional turbulence, then go make some music yourselves. You’ll be fortunate if you can dredge up one small fraction of the immense talent that Jack White has in his little finger.

Anonymous | 5/9/2009, 6:42 am EST

excellent post Dee, spot on as all hell.

eggy | 5/9/2009, 6:51 am EST

yeh, with all the heavy hitters in the business, for them to spot and commend Jack’s genius is no easy feat to accomplish. The Dylans and Pages and Townshends and Stones have already seen it ALL, and likewise don’t need to pal up with him to boost their relevance. Name two artists that get that same level of credibility given to them by all the old school musicians. You can’t, I know…
Keep hatin’ you dildotrons

the REAL tc | 5/9/2009, 7:19 am EST

i do not understand what is supposed to be so great about The White Stripes. But, i won’t criticize them…or people who enjoy their music. I just don’t get it.

Weegie | 5/9/2009, 12:45 pm EST

You’re not the sharpest crayon in the box are ya “The REAL tc”. To appreciate the Stripes you have to have a knowledge of music that goes beyond whatever drek they’ve played on the radio over the past 2 years….have to know Son House and Skip James, The Stones, Bob Dylan, Robert Johnson…..Jack went back and listened to all the great music, back to 1930, just like The Stones did, and Jimi, and Led Zep. Most bands today think of 1987 as “The old days”, it’s why most music sucks. Jack is a one in a million talent, Keith Richards described him as carrying the torch of rock and roll, and he is…

Weegie | 5/9/2009, 12:46 pm EST

Pearls before swine…..

poopman | 5/9/2009, 2:09 pm EST

I rather have him be part of the raconteurs or dead weather than white stripes. Meg is the worst drummer ever and she holds the band back. If they could get a new drummer I would have more respect for them.

Sigh of relief | 5/10/2009, 5:39 pm EST

YES! Finally! I was worried about them not coming back.

BonScott | 5/11/2009, 12:37 am EST

poopman, you’re an idiot. and made of feces.

BonScott | 5/11/2009, 12:39 am EST

i wish it was actually meg in that sex tape :(

Vicki | 5/11/2009, 12:41 am EST

Amazing post Dee- you hit the nail on the head!!!!

Q-T | 5/11/2009, 6:23 pm EST

Meg has to keep up with JACK WHITE-musical genius extraordinaire, let’s see you do it!

denzepp58 | 5/13/2009, 3:55 pm EST

I thought ICKY THUMP was right up there with WHITE BLOOD CELLS as one of their best cd’s. I think JW is his generations Jimmy Page. And, no, Meg is not the best drummer in the world, but her sound on IT did remind me somewhat of John Bonham, she never has been afraid to hit the drums hard, like Bonham. Having grown up in the seventies, I am pleased to see that there is some good music being made by real musicians who are not interested in doing the Coldplay,Jonas Brothers,FOB kind of dreck that unfortunately is commercially viable today and that Rolling Stone caters to these days. Keep rockin,JW and MW and never sell out,and keep ROCK alive !!!

Edwin | 5/14/2009, 7:46 pm EST

Jack can wail and makes his guitar scream. I like the guy.

mATTERgOD | 5/15/2009, 8:31 pm EST

As denzep58 stated: “I am pleased to see that there is some good music being made by real musicians…”

While RS does profile those music acts that sell mags, they do still maintain a bit of true integrity to rock by giving ample coverage to the Jack White’s, Pearl Jam’s, Kings of Leon’s (although they’ve strayed), and the Stokes’ of the world.

I look forward to the many variations of crativity that Jack brings. I’m proud to know that he grew up in my small part of this planet. See, even if you plant a seed in bad soil, it may grow to prosper!

lolololoolololool | 5/15/2009, 8:34 pm EST

Ok, I have to say that “You’re All A Bunch Of Mororns” is totally wrong. Icky Thump was a great album, I don’t understand people who don’t like that album. It was great. I love all the other stuff as well too. MW’s drumming was good, too. You can tell on this record she’s gotten more creative. I just really love the album.

anna lise | 6/30/2009, 11:04 am EST

i dont know why people would actually not like the WS. they ROCK! all you haters are jus plain stupid idiots, that really obviously have no taste in music at all. :)

i love the WS!!!!!!!! | 6/30/2009, 11:29 am EST

The White Stripes are like the best. All you haters are very jealous of the WS because they can perform very well and you haters don’t even the chance to do things like them. I’D like to see you haters perform something like them. EVERYONE should love the White Stripes. Not yet have i heard a suckish album that they have made.
