Trent Reznor Swipes at Prince, Rivers Cuomo in Fan Interview

Someone needs to give newly engaged rocker Trent Reznor his own talk show. After blasting Chris Cornell’s Timbaland-produced album Scream on Twitter in March, and even staging an elaborate April Fool’s hoax at the former Soundgarden and Audioslave frontman’s expense, the brains behind Nine Inch Nails is at it again, making more well-known frenemies through his online efforts.

In a recent Digg-related interview, Reznor answered fan questions, then he did a follow-up to respond to 10 more queries from his message board, reports TwentyFourBit. When asked whether there was a stockpile of unreleased NIN material, Reznor set his sights on Prince and Weezer’s frontman. “I’m not Prince or Rivers Cuomo, who brags about having hundreds of great songs,” Reznor replied. “And to that I would say, ‘Prince, if you have a hundred great songs or a thousand, how about picking a few and putting them on your record that you’ve put out, because your last several have sucked.’ Same for you, Rivers. I say that constructively, you know.”

Next, Reznor sort of reflected on his words and snickered, adding, “I may be happy and engaged but I can still be a prick.” This is the first time Reznor has publicly acknowledged his engagement to West Indian Girl’s Mariqueen Maandig.

Since fulfilling his contract with Interscope and becoming a free agent in October 2007, Reznor has communicated directly with fans via blog posts, Twitters and message-board chats almost exclusively. While still under contract in May 2007 Trent blogged about the record biz misunderstanding fans and overpricing albums. In March 2009, he instructed fans not to buy tickets from scalpers and criticized the secondary-ticket market. Earlier this week, Reznor angrily posted on the NIN message board when his iPhone application update was rejected by Apple: “You can buy The Downward Fucking Spiral on iTunes, but you can’t allow an iPhone app that may have a song with a bad word somewhere in it.”

In March, Reznor updated his more than 400,000 Twitter disciples with a pithy review of Cornell’s album, which sees the rocker trading in his guitar for a sampler. “You know that feeling you get when somebody embarrasses themselves so badly YOU feel uncomfortable? Heard Chris Cornell’s record? Jesus,” he wrote.

On April 1st, Reznor added salt to the wound, announcing on his Website that a new Tim-helmed Nails album, called Strobe Light, was on the way, and that it would include the songs “Everybody’s Doing It” (featuring Coldplay’s Chris Martin, Bono and Jay-Z), “Coffin On the Dancefloor,” “Even Closer” (featuring guest spots by Justin Timberlake and Tool’s Maynard James Keenan), “Laid, Paid and Played” (with Fergie and Ministry’s Al Jourgensen) and “Still Hurts,” which boasts a duet with Alicia Keys.

Reznor replied. “And to that I would say, ‘Prince, if you have a hundred great songs or a thousand, how about picking a few and putting them on your record that you’ve put out, because your last several have sucked.

Uh, your last several have sucked too!

Tela | 5/7/2009, 11:39 am EST

Give Trent a Cover on Rolling Stones. It been years since he has been in the cover. I mean come on it been 20 years since NIN!

Taj | 5/7/2009, 11:42 am EST

i think rolling stone is blowing this up too much. why can’t TR have his own opinions about pop music?

Michelle | 5/7/2009, 12:02 pm EST

Actually the Digg interview was done last month, and this interview where he mentions Prince and Weezer only happened less than a week ago (in May). And Trent is really only giving constructive criticism. I think his pokes at other artists are funny and good natured.

StrummerJones | 5/7/2009, 12:07 pm EST

Prince really does need to just start creating another opus like Sign “O” The Times. If he can’t with the ridiculous amount of material he has in the vault, then he’s really just done.

leo3375 | 5/7/2009, 12:07 pm EST

The Digg interview wasn’t a webcam interview but was done face-to-face last month.

Kevin the Robot | 5/7/2009, 12:36 pm EST

He’s right about Prince. I heard he recorded 100 songs during Purple Rain. Rather than hear some new crap album, I’d like to hear the 91 songs that didn’t make the album.

Sarah | 5/7/2009, 12:40 pm EST

Strobe Light was an April Fool’s joke. It wasn’t salt on the wound it was just funny. Im glad Reznor is so outspoken, and damn funny!

Anonymous | 5/7/2009, 12:41 pm EST

I agree Tela.. Put the man on the cover. He, along with Radiohead, have changed the way artists can distribute their music without the “big boys” having a hand in it.

Ash | 5/7/2009, 12:49 pm EST

Year Zero is his greatest album. Ghosts and The Slip were more experiments on form and aesthetics rather than being classic, traditional albums.

TheCoz | 5/7/2009, 12:57 pm EST

I don’t ever remember Rivers Cuomo saying he had hundreds of “great” songs, just that he is a prolific writer. I think he values his bandmates’ opinions when selecting tracks for a record which can happen when you ummm…have other people in the band. NIN is still a one man show the last time I heard.

Cuomo is alse a song-structure perfectionist, so maybe he’s just trying to not drive himself crazy again by leaving these songs by the wayside.

NIN is Irrelevant | 5/7/2009, 1:02 pm EST

It’s funny hearing an irrelevant “artist” like Trent Reznor bash Prince’s work. Prince’s worst work is still 100 times better than anything Trent could spit out on his little computers. I wasn’t even aware Trent was still alive, let alone made records. Now I see he has to give his music away free and beg people to come to his concerts, using Twitter all day long. Can you say, “loser”? Prince sold out 21 straight concerts and is in the Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame… a living legend. Trent is and always has been irrelevant… a minor blip.

Rabbitbunny | 5/7/2009, 1:03 pm EST

Thanks, RS and thank you, Mr. Reznor for having the absolute bravery to speak out against Prince! The Purple Brat is not a genius! He is overrated! Prince and I ARE NO LONGER ON ROCKING TERMS! Trent, now I know the real meaning of your first brilliant metal classic Head Like a Hole! The hook “Bow down before the one you serve/You’re gonna get what you deserve!” is directly aimed at Prince. The song is a diatribe and an indictment of the music industry
-a Pretty Hate Machine and Downward Spiral that simply does not even care about the people who make and breathe rock & roll
-the bleeding hearts and artists,
as Roger Waters angrily described it in the Floyd song Trial. As more irrelevant figures
re-non-rock (Prince, Mariah, Whitney, Michael, McCartney, Stewart, Adams, Sting) BUILD UP THEIR OWN WALLS OF OBLIVION
-WATCHING THEIR CAREERS FALL IN IRRELEVANCE BECAUSE THEY CAN’T ROCK, DON’T ROCK OR AREN’T ROCK, they just became or become part of a machine that doesn’t care! Thankfully, unlike Prince, I am not funky and I don’t live the
pop life! Thanks, Trent for being brave enough to write “Screw you!
-I want to feel you from the inside-like an animal!,” as you bluntly stated and pointed out in Closer because the ramifications
are going to Hurt for a long time
to come-unless artists and bands are willing to do something about what gets sung and written on our records-and for rock & roll
to shout-”I’m mad as hell and I’m not gonna take it anymore!”
Mr. Reznor, you’re a rock hero after my own Rabbit heart!

Ozzie | 5/7/2009, 1:08 pm EST

Isn’t this the same guy who hasn’t made a decent album since 1994? Maybe he’d be in the same class as the aformentioned artists if he’d stop making the same album over and over again!

Nick | 5/7/2009, 1:19 pm EST

It’s says a lot about a man’s character when he has to go out of his way to bash other people’s artistic endeavours and it also says a lot about the confidence that he has in his own work. And rightly so, his last 2 albums have been garbage. So much so that he has to give them away for free on the internet. I can’t think of a bigger brat in the music industry right now than Trent Reznor.

SHAP | 5/7/2009, 1:21 pm EST

I’m tired of Trent, but he’s right about Prince and that douche Rivers Cuomo. Granted, I’m wondering when HE is going to start putting great songs back on NIN records.

Tachyon | 5/7/2009, 1:24 pm EST

Prince fanbois are pretty butthurt.

Nick | 5/7/2009, 1:24 pm EST

The Fragile and Year Zero were fantastic pieces of art. With Teeth was really good. The Slip wasn’t that great, but hey it was free.

Rivers Cuomo on the other hand has to be in his 40s by now and still writes the same crap for teenagers. I get a total Gary Glitter vibe off of people like that.

Prince does in fact release old songs on his new albums. You can’t tell me he wrote a lyrics with a pager reference on a song made in 2006, as he did on a Planet Earth track. Nobody has used a pager since, what, 1998?

Unknown | 5/7/2009, 1:28 pm EST

I’m with you on Rivers, Trent. HORRIBLE TUNES!

Jordan Catalano | 5/7/2009, 1:39 pm EST

Trent has no right to be calling people out for not making good records anymore.

While Prince’s most recent works haven’t been amazing, over the course of his career he’s put out far, far more great songs and ALBUMS than Mr. Reznor. Hell, Reznor even sampled Prince on his first album (at least that’s what he said in the liner notes).

I just wish he’d spend less time talking shit about people and made an album that actually MATTERED outside of some ‘progressive digitally-based marketing plan.’ If dude could come up with a song even half as good/interesting as “That’s What I Get” again, maybe. But seriously, his last decent album was ‘The Fragile,’ and that one didn’t even have any real songs on it.

Next…

Dawn | 5/7/2009, 1:43 pm EST

Poor Trent. He still seems very angry. Isn’t this the guy who just got himself engaged after knowing someone a matter of days? I agree, his last couple of albums have been terrible. I think someone must have come off their meds recently…

Swingline | 5/7/2009, 1:44 pm EST

Sobriety has made Trent sound like a bitter asshole.

Earlier on, NIN’s music edge seemed so much sharper because Trent kept himself “behind the curtain” instead of at the forefront. 10 years ago that anger would’ve been channeled into another “Starfuckers, Inc.”, and now it’s just “here’s my ramblings and here’s another album just like the last 3.”

Bill O'Reilly - NOT! | 5/7/2009, 1:47 pm EST

I said Reznor was a pinhead for dissing Chris Cornell. Looks like once a pinhead … always a pinhead. Or in his own words a total “prick”.

Reznor, you are graceless and lack anything resembling social skills.

Leslie | 5/7/2009, 1:47 pm EST

Yeah he has proven recently he isn’t the best at making decisions himself. Happy? He doesn’t sound it at all. Still sounds bitter and jealous.

Trev | 5/7/2009, 2:11 pm EST

NIN Rules – Trent is hilarious but true.

Hoov | 5/7/2009, 2:15 pm EST

Wrroowwww! Hissss!!

I still love Mr. Reznor for his classics, but have to admit not much interest in his last few albums. He’s always been a bit of a shit talker and why not?

Salo | 5/7/2009, 2:23 pm EST

i think once you put every single thing the man says on here it’s easy to see it differently than the way it was intended..
you make it out like this whole interview was for him to sit on his high horse and look down and judge at all the little people..
but he’s just a guy..and he randomly gave his opinion..
and as far as the stobelight deal..
that was premeditated to make fun of ALL artists who feel they need to collaborate with big time producers to make more sells…that simple
so chris, don’t feel like you’re all alone in this.

WOW | 5/7/2009, 2:28 pm EST

“his last 2 albums have been garbage. So much so that he has to give them away for free on the Internet”
I’m seeing a lot of variation of this sort of comment. The point of releasing the albums for free on the Internet did not have anything to do with the quality of the albums. It was a way of trying to wake people up to the ridiculousness of the Record Industry. He could have easily released those albums on a record label and continued the ripping-off of his fans. Instead he took the high road and showed people that these labels are unnecessary. He consistently goes out of his way to connect with his fans on the Internet and through other means. For that he has my respect. Although, I think he should watch his words though. I’m getting tired of him ripping on other artists. As for the quality of his albums, While they may not be the fragile and the downward spiral they’re still decent albums. To say that they were terrible or “garbage” is idiotic. They’re still much better than most the crap that’s being played in the mainstream.

Anonymous | 5/7/2009, 2:28 pm EST

Yeah Princes last albums have been pure shit and Weezer now sounds like they write music for cereal commercials. He does deserve the cover of Stone!

Julie | 5/7/2009, 2:45 pm EST

Quote: “Someone needs to give newly engaged rocker Trent Reznor his own talk show. /Quote

This.

Buzz | 5/7/2009, 3:01 pm EST

Prince does a have a habit of writing the same song again and again, but in amongst those song clones (usually the more beat-heavy, neo-R&B things) is some amazing stuff–even these days. Particularly, he has been playing guitar like the thing was on fire on the past few albums. He’s just has an enormous musical instinct and impulse–it won’t all be great.

Sonic Reducer | 5/7/2009, 3:06 pm EST

I love how all the gosspip magazines my mother reads are celebrating that the most “anti-social loner” is just a softie into marriage and kids.Yuck.

There is no such thing as a singer you relate to for having a certain world view sticking to that worldview.Unless it is the original
70’s punks. They all turn into your dad.

Nick | 5/7/2009, 3:29 pm EST

To WOW – I think it’s pretty ironic that you cite the ‘ridiculousness of Record Industry’ for Trent having success releasing his music for free on the internet. It’s this exact ‘Record Industry’ that Trent owes entire career to. Where would Trent be if his label didn’t fund the magnificent “Head Like a Hole” or “Closer” videos that launched him superstardom? The fact of the matter is is that if Trent hadn’t put out some great records (and they were great) that were pushed to radio and MTV by his label he would be nowhere right now. He’d just be some creepy 40-something writing bitter blogs about musicians and releasing crappy bedroom recordings for free on the internet.

chops | 5/7/2009, 3:34 pm EST

I think Trent Reznor has now passed Bruce Springsteen as coolest guy in rock

Tom | 5/7/2009, 3:35 pm EST

I love Trent and he is honest to God my biggest idol (AND I loved YZ, The Slip and Ghosts) but he has a tendency to act like a giant fucking baby sometimes.

This is one of those times.

Bobbie | 5/7/2009, 3:44 pm EST

This asshole has nerve….he’s pulling a publicity stunt as we speak. Twittering about marrying some tramp after meeting two weeks ago. Reznor is an idiot….a hypocrite…oh, and a douche bag who is pulling stunts to stay relevant. He’d be mad if someone told him he hasn’t put anything worth while out…which he hasn’t in a VERY long time. He’s an asshole.

Elke | 5/7/2009, 3:48 pm EST

Nick, maybe you should take in account the way the music industry has evolved lately? 1993 and 2009 are way, way different; and record companies do seem to have changed immensely over that short period of time.

jolkie | 5/7/2009, 4:09 pm EST

Reznor, Prince and Rivers all have this thread in commen: They are all independantly minded musician who compose by themselves and are maverick jack of all trades. They all have great talent, but if I could rate:
1. Prince
2. Reznor
3. Rivers
4. Reznor’s computer

SATAN | 5/7/2009, 4:12 pm EST

NIN sucks too, he has these delusional visions of personal grandure. Trent thinks he’s the sh!t, wow, what a news flash. Weezer is so much better than a guy who pretends to be a genious. Hell, Year Zero needed the gimmick because the music sucked

George | 5/7/2009, 4:20 pm EST

Both Prince and Reznor have released crap the last few times! I haven’t heard a great prince record since Diamonds and Pears and the NIN record that was decent was the Downaward Spiral.

nine inch dong | 5/7/2009, 4:20 pm EST

When was the last time Reznor was even relevent? 1998? Who gives a shit what he thinks.

Peter North | 5/7/2009, 4:21 pm EST

Did someone say nine inch dong?

Drewdog21 | 5/7/2009, 4:23 pm EST

Man, I just don’t get the general public anymore. I’m just gonna talk about the music here. Prince was great–in his day (and before he became a Jehovah’s Witness.) His music just oozed sex–and it was good! Purple Rain is personal favorite of mine. I love all his early work from Dirty Mind and Controversy, 1999 and Purple Rain and Sign O’ the Times. Then he became “

Zwic | 5/7/2009, 4:41 pm EST

First Slash on Idol now Reznor and Timberlake together, this is bad! All rockstars shoud die young before they ruin their image!

amusic09 | 5/7/2009, 4:51 pm EST

Hey Zwic,
Learn how to read. The Timberlake/Reznor thing was an April Fools joke!

Anonymous | 5/7/2009, 5:05 pm EST

1. This artcile jumps around more and is harder to follow than a 7-year-old on crack.

2. This isn’t the first he has talked about his engagement- he has posted a comment about it on NIN-Access and Twitter.

3. If you would watch the whole damn interview you would’ve heard him saying people take him way too serious and he is joking when he says some of the things he does.

Henry | 5/7/2009, 5:10 pm EST

I agree with Swingline.Instead of the angry recluse making his pretty hate machine,he has become Mr chatty internet. The ‘beefs’ he starts are now out of thin air too.

Expect Reznor to twitter cutesy pictures of his future kids and family vacations and stuff like that.Yawn-it is over for another artist who was about something in the 90’s.

prince reznor | 5/7/2009, 5:25 pm EST

way to go trent! lol
dont ever brag about you have hundres of great songs lol

Evan | 5/7/2009, 5:28 pm EST

Trent has always been pretty sarcastic, so yeah….

prince reznor | 5/7/2009, 5:36 pm EST

and the strobe light album was genius. lol thats hilarious in a real way. thats a very good satire of modern music/artist.

PRODUCED BY TIMBALAND
1. everybody’s doing it (featuring chris martin, jay-z AND bono)

lol!
(im not a big fan of NIN.)

... | 5/7/2009, 5:36 pm EST

Trent reznor – loud mouth emotional guy.

Anonymous | 5/7/2009, 5:51 pm EST

How is Weezer different from any other hipster band out there? Weezer hasn’t had a good song since buddy holly. Trent I love how your doing a duet with Fergie!!! hahaha

mk | 5/7/2009, 6:15 pm EST

i’m not a big prince fan, just a matter of taste. but the guy’s a genius. you’d have to be pretty dense not to see that. a hundred years from now when we read about the american popular music movement of the 20th century, prince will be all over the place. trent reznor….not so much.

EAB | 5/7/2009, 6:28 pm EST

What also needs to be mentioned is that later in the interview, Trent mentions that he used to want to work with Prince and he thinks he is a genius. I guess the RS writer omitted that part since it takes away from the snarky narrative.

Lunch with Axl Rose? | 5/7/2009, 6:28 pm EST

Cause the both of you seem to have a taste for sour grapes. And invite Brandon Flowers from the Killers for cocktails too, cause he’s got beef with Led Zeppelin and Kurt Cobain, so maybe you can all discuss about how much you hate people who are doing so much better and are more talented than you. You’re 40-freaking-3-years old, what’s up with all this immaturity lately? Why are you picking on people who’ve got nothing to do with you, huh? If you hate their music, go ahead and hate their music, but don’t publicly diss them for making something YOU don’t like. It’s not like your opinion matters anyway. And Swingline is right, you’ve hardly become a Mozart yourself.

OK | 5/7/2009, 6:31 pm EST

So I don’t know if Trent Reznor can boasts that what he has put out since the Fragile is at all that great. A few good songs here and there but what I liked about NIN was that when an album was released it had a unique sound and vision to it. The latest albums put out by NIN all sound very similar. You can’t really distinguish what song is from what album after fragile. It’s to bad when someone believes his own hype :(

mk | 5/7/2009, 6:36 pm EST

re Taj comment: i think rolling stone is blowing this up too much. why can’t TR have his own opinions about pop music? \

he can. it’s just bad form to be slagging people in the press. slagging a peer like cuomo just makes you look like a jerk. but when you slag one of the true geniuses of american music it makes it look like you don’t know your craft. basically, it makes you look like an amateur who wouldn’t know a professional if one bit him on the arse.

Black Hole Sun | 5/7/2009, 6:41 pm EST

“I may be happy and engaged but I can still be a prick.”

Wow, he took the words right out of my mouth.

FACT. | 5/7/2009, 6:48 pm EST

Atleast Trent is not going after a easy target like the dumb Radioheads going after Miley Cyrus.

W | 5/7/2009, 6:59 pm EST

@Fact:

Actually, it was Miley who went after Radiohead first, by threatening to “ruin them” because they wouldn’t meet with her backstage at the Grammys. All they did was told her to grow up, they didn’t insult her.

Kyle | 5/7/2009, 6:59 pm EST

The dumb Radioheads? How about the dumbass calling radiohead dumb? Fuck off

GG | 5/7/2009, 7:03 pm EST

I fully support Reznor ending his music career and devoting himself full time to being a music critic.
This is the best idea he has had in…ever.

EAB | 5/7/2009, 7:06 pm EST

Actually that’s not a “fact.” In reality, Miley Cyrus took a swipe at Radiohead for refusing to gush all over her at the Grammys.

Billy. | 5/7/2009, 7:11 pm EST

So if he’s going after bad records of great musicians now, I think he should be fair and start at home, I mean there’s no point for his comment, he was one of the classiest guys of that generation, looks like he’s turning into another bitter failure, a la Billy Corgan.

Anonymous | 5/7/2009, 7:14 pm EST

Maybe Reznor should listen to his own advice and stop putting out crap. The Slip, Ghosts, and Year Zero are all horrible albums. Last decent album they had was With Teeth, even that was average….

Thom Yorke is a hipocrite. | 5/7/2009, 7:17 pm EST

Radiohead went to the Grammys to dish POP artists.

If you are Radiohead and go to the Grammys (POP industry biggest party) you will expect for people to come up to you, they knew what they were doing and drag about it, I mean if you don’t care about the POP industry Why bother? that’s a FACT.

Keith Edward Armstrong | 5/7/2009, 7:22 pm EST

Trent Reznor is a joke. Prince’s last few albums have all been critically acclaimed (by actual music critics who aren’t artists jealous of other artists) and the fact is that Prince is a living legend and Reznor is a has been (it isn’t 1994 anymore!)

Genius vs Bitterness. | 5/7/2009, 7:29 pm EST

The funny thing about all the Trent Reznor “Paris/Nicole style” of trashing is that Prince don’t care a fuck.

So keep it coming Trent, you gotta represent the 90’s.

wallytarkington | 5/7/2009, 7:33 pm EST

You know, I have never ‘gotten’ NIN, and this validates it. Not because he is acting like a dick, but because he thinks he is in a position to judge. Rivers may be hard on bassists, but does anybody who played with Trent in ‘94 still play with him? They got tired of his bullshit and left because the music wasn’t enough to keep them around. And I know Rivers can be difficult but at least he still has three guys who believe in him. Trent makes music in a vacuum, which just confirms that he sucks!

Septimius Severus | 5/7/2009, 7:34 pm EST

Reznor has been putting out fecal matter for the past decade. Get your head out of your ass, protein shake boy.

This is 2009! | 5/7/2009, 7:35 pm EST

Your such a class act Trent, you just join the Billy Corgan and Thom Yorke club.

We’re millionares, we’re stars, what should we do next? Let’s trash or peers!!!

90’s all over again. yeah the new generation love you, they think you are the coolest, right?

Cookie dough | 5/7/2009, 7:36 pm EST

He makes Robert Christgau look like a softy, LOL.

Paul | 5/7/2009, 7:36 pm EST

i dont think Cuomo ever came out and declared that his unreleased material was the greatest thing ever. i think it was more of an outcry from Weezer fans for the unreleasedsed material that led to the release of the “Alone” cd’s

Javier | 5/7/2009, 7:44 pm EST

I totally agree with you, hate doesn’t give you relevance, in fact the new generation looove’s Prince, jus’t chek all the cool bands that still mention him as their big influence:

MGMT, Arcade Fire, Beck, Of Montreal, Peaches, Jack White, M.I.A., Kings of Leon, The Killers, Justice, Flight of the Concords, Kid Kutty and TV on The Radio latest album was a very well know tribute to Prince, so I guess Trent your so in touch with the new millenium. Keep it coming.

EAB | 5/7/2009, 7:45 pm EST

Actually, LOtUSFLOW3R received mixed reviews. Check the review bar on the album’s Wikipedia page. The Slip, on the other hand, got decent to good write ups. 3121 was well received. Likewise, Year Zero got a pretty decent amount of praise (in my mind its one of the strongest from NIN’s catalog). Indeed, RS gave it four stars.

Tourniquet | 5/7/2009, 7:52 pm EST

The strange thing about Reznor dissing Chris Cornell is that I completely see Reznor going the same direction as Cornell. The techno-pop balladeer,Mr. stud & nice guy family man route.

The anti social, single-white-male audience of Soundgarden replaced by moms who think Chris Cornell has the sexiest voice, dreamiest eyes and nicest butt on the planet. And he sings Neil Diamond songs too!

The Kid | 5/7/2009, 7:54 pm EST

Prince don’t give a ***k!

Keep it coming Trent, your so cool, so alternative!

I'm so alternative! | 5/7/2009, 7:58 pm EST

yeah, Trent come and save rock, you are the only genius in the industry. LOL!

Such a 90’s pretentiousness.

Your so rebel Trent! | 5/7/2009, 8:01 pm EST

What’s next? trashing Dylan? James Brown? Hendrix? Kraftwerk?

Mia Bocca. | 5/7/2009, 8:09 pm EST

Prince don’t give a ***k.

Sam | 5/7/2009, 8:10 pm EST

Mariqueen, do something about that bitter man of yours. He’s turning into Archie Bunker, and it’s so pathetic it’s not even funny anymore. When he told Fred Durst to surf a piece of plywood up his ass, it was justified, cause Fred loves to think he’s the greatest musician that ever lived, when it’s the exact opposite. But picking on Chris Cornell, Prince and Rivers Cuomo is going too far for no reason now. You’ve made the same, angry, industrial-goth crap since…your ENTIRE career! Wow! And you’re talking about others embarrassing themselves and making consecutively bad albums? I’m embarrassed for YOU, Trent Reznor. You’re a middle-aged man acting like you’re still in junior high.

Camille. | 5/7/2009, 8:36 pm EST

Listen, I don’t like Prince, I never been a fan, but the man is a genius like we’re never comprehend, he’s probably the last of it’s kind, you can say lots of things about him, but you always have to respect his craftsmanship and his legendary contribution to rock.

What’s next Trent? Are you going after Led Zeppellin or Bowie?

Jamie Star | 5/7/2009, 8:38 pm EST

Trent welcome to the Brandon Flowers and Thom Yorke club.

You are the only one making “good” records, right?

Broke e broke | 5/7/2009, 8:48 pm EST

I ain’t sayin’ she’s a gold digger…

FERABAD | 5/7/2009, 8:49 pm EST

He just said what he thinks, and I agree with him.

Yeah, Prince will be seen as a genious by future generatioms (and in these predent days), but for his 80’s albums. And Weezer are Ok but their last albums aren’t that good either. NIN’s relevancy these days is far superior and so are their albums. Anyone saying that he hasn’t made a good album since TDS has no fucking idea about good music, and trying to compare Reznor with Cornell is absolutely ridiculous, I liked both in the 90’s but these days only Reznor has my full support and respect.

Cindy C. | 5/7/2009, 8:58 pm EST

Bad for you RS, later on the interview Trent reveals that he dream of working with Prince once.

You guys are turning into TMZ.

ME | 5/7/2009, 9:00 pm EST

WHERE THE F… IS MY COMMENT?

crzydgldy | 5/7/2009, 9:14 pm EST

Trent you’re gonna need to be a little less subtle if you wanna land the cover of Moderne Prick magazine.

And yes I loved Year Zero. Guilty as charged.

W | 5/7/2009, 9:28 pm EST

Professor Snape, leave Prince and Weezer alone and go back to teaching Potions at Hogwarts.

No smoking | 5/7/2009, 9:47 pm EST

Can’t someone tell this fat ass to get off the couch and onto a treadmill? Otherwise his 20-something fiancee will leave him for a younger and better looking dude who’s not such a prick…

Izzyfan | 5/7/2009, 9:52 pm EST

Does anybody really care what any musician thinks about anything? Music is almost all I care about outside of family and I don’t care what any artist says about anyone or anything outside of their art! Get a life! I’ll be doing the same, as this will be the first and last post I ever make!

furiouscalm | 5/7/2009, 10:23 pm EST

We are in the age of reality-media, of which R.S and commenters such as ourselves are a part. So, Reznor’s comments are the norm and no different from others who twitter, blog, post, podcast, audition for reality TV shows, et al, who express opinions of all shape and size. So, big fucking deal about what Reznor says. He is not the only one. And he has every right to, as we have the right to post here. The only way to dismiss this right is to revolutionise mass media as a whole.

Anonymous | 5/7/2009, 10:38 pm EST

I find it hilarious how many of you are upset because Trent gives his opinion.

Isn’t that the same as what you’re doing?

Wendy | 5/7/2009, 10:54 pm EST

Hey man don’t confuse opinion with dissing, don’t confuse freedom of speech with freedom of trash.

Rivers who? | 5/7/2009, 10:54 pm EST

I am a huge fan of all music, and I’ve always thought of myself as a pretty knowledgeable guy when it comes to music trivia (actually, I’ve almost made that my second job)…so I hesitate to ask, but who is Rivers Cuomo?

…I have nothing to say about Reznor’s comments because if he wants to dog on Prince, he is undeserving of my time.

Bill Thomas | 5/7/2009, 10:55 pm EST

Trent isn’t the nicest of human beings, drugs or no drugs. I highly doubt Trent is a clean and sober man. No clean dude would be acting like this and getting married after a couple of weeks of knowing someone. Reznor is 44 yrs. old now and hasn’t learned a dam thing. He is legally insane, and self-obsessed.

Trent Daddy | 5/7/2009, 11:02 pm EST

Trent owns

thats what you guys don’t get

Lisa | 5/7/2009, 11:02 pm EST

I agree with you Wendy, What’s the point of his comments?

Trent thinks that beign a prick will keep him in touch with the new generation, you know, with the rock fans who are listen to TV In the Radio and MGMT, but if he pay attention will see that antagonism is over, it’s all about harmony in 2009 Trent!

Your so alternative. Right.

Joel. | 5/7/2009, 11:06 pm EST

This is the funniest thing ever, the 90’s rules right?

Even worse, I bet you that Trent really think’s that’s his comments will hurt Prince.

Tyler | 5/7/2009, 11:08 pm EST

It’s really unfortunate that when someone speaks their mind that everyone gets all pissy over it. Also, quit comparing Cuomo and Prince to Reznor, they’re three completly different people.

FACT! | 5/7/2009, 11:11 pm EST

Such a classy guy Trent, welcome to the washed out 90’s club.

We’re millionares, we’re famous, we sell out! What should we do next?

Let’s trash or peers! May be we can get our credibility back.

Trent is a hipocrite | 5/7/2009, 11:21 pm EST

You call this “speaks their mind”, you are a blind fool, Trent is turning into Perez Hilton.

Of all of the legends that had made great and not so great albums, Why would Trent go after Prince? the only 80s artist that survived far better then the 90s acts, I mean this is a common patron of that generation, even when they go indie they need some one to trash, sad but true.

Trent turn into a cliche.

90's sucks! | 5/7/2009, 11:23 pm EST

Your such a class act Trent, you just join the Billy Corgan and Thom Yorke club.

We’re millionares, we’re stars, what should we do next? Let’s trash or peers!!!

90’s all over again. yeah the new generation love you, they think you are the coolest, right.

LOL!

Really? | 5/7/2009, 11:28 pm EST

I want to hear Prince opinion on NIN.

Trent sample Tambourine, Batdance and many Prince classics, he even confess that “Closer” was a homage to the purple man, so I bet you that Prince will find this pretty lame.

LOL! | 5/7/2009, 11:32 pm EST

This is so abzurd, is like Eddie Murphy trashing Richard Pryor, doesn’t make any sense.

But once again this is a Gen X alumn, so pessimism it’s on his blood.

Keep going Trent, you are so hip now.

Prince rules! | 5/7/2009, 11:45 pm EST

Go Trent, you gotta represent the 90s. Right?

Like it or not Trent Reznor is the new Elton John, a bitter millionare screaming for attention.

really? | 5/7/2009, 11:54 pm EST

wow! who’s next Trent? Dylan? Kurt? Bowie?

I loose my respect for Reznor.

Prince rocks!

For real? | 5/8/2009, 12:00 am EST

ok, one thing, Prince is a genius like Trent will never be, I like NIN but this is stupid.

When does Trent Reznor turn into a ignorant ass?

Please explain to me | 5/8/2009, 12:00 am EST

How long has he known his girlfriend? Everyone keeps saying a couple of weeks, I google his girlfriend and no explanation. How long have they known each other? If it’s really a couple of weeks, than that’s bad, man.

Gwab | 5/8/2009, 12:06 am EST

LoL…watch the obedient sheep flock to take up for Prance…

Brad C. | 5/8/2009, 12:34 am EST

Aw..Trenty wants some attention…Aw.. Pacify this man with some attention.. Whuh? You wanna spot on Leno with your bimbo? You want more $$$$ and record sales too? Aw…Don’t cry baby..

Trent Reznor is out of touch. | 5/8/2009, 12:34 am EST

Is this is how “someone speaks their mind” so I guess Perez Hilton is a genius.

Mass Hysteria | 5/8/2009, 12:38 am EST

NIN is overrated, listen to Muse, they’re way better than NIN and the lead singer isn’t an a-hole like Trent.

Sam D. | 5/8/2009, 12:41 am EST

Trent did this to himself with the fame-whoring and drinking/druggin girlfriend so I feel no mercy. Prince is probably in the studio now preparing a death blow. Trent does have the onstage chops or musical abilities to match Prince.

Prince is the man! | 5/8/2009, 12:51 am EST

I agree with you, any artist with relevance right now respect Prince or other legends that don’t make albums like they used to (Bowie, Dylan, Zep).

The ironic thing is that Where are the good NIN albums of the last 10 years? I mean Prince made like 3 albums a year, probably not as good as Purple Rain but as good as everyone else best albums, the guy is a genius and is more relevant now then ever.

Omar. | 5/8/2009, 12:55 am EST

I wonder why this is Radiohead decade, Trent Reznor is becoming every single thing that he hates, who knew. Really disapointing.

By the way Prince rocks!

Kurt Cobain | 5/8/2009, 12:56 am EST

Married.Burried.

The wingman. | 5/8/2009, 1:00 am EST

5 modern bands making better albums then NIN:

Radiohead, Muse, MIA, Tv on the Radio, MGMT.

I saw Prince in Coachella and he rock the house!

Dios mio! | 5/8/2009, 1:06 am EST

Wow! this guy is a jerk, first he trashed Radiohead because he loose the Grammy against them, afterwards he trashed Chriss Cornell and now he’s after Prince.

We got ourselves the new Fred Durst.

Great comment | 5/8/2009, 1:09 am EST

FACT
It’s says a lot about a man’s character when he has to go out of his way to bash other people’s artistic endeavours and it also says a lot about the confidence that he has in his own work. And rightly so, his last 2 albums have been garbage. So much so that he has to give them away for free on the internet. I can’t think of a bigger brat in the music industry right now than Trent Reznor.

Dean Temple | 5/8/2009, 1:25 am EST

Yup 45 yr old male Drama Junkie. Its pathetic. His new girlfriend that he found on Twitter looks like a reeeaal piece of work. Maybe now he’ll stop making crappy electronic music. Prince needs to smack the bitch back to senses.

Oberon | 5/8/2009, 1:31 am EST

Trent is doing this for the attention. He figures he has nothing to lose by making these comments because he gives away his music for free, but he doesn’t realize that he has a source of income worth protecting—his tour revenue. If he keeps it up, people may be fed up enough to not even want to see him live. He would do himself some good by not speaking in public altogether, except to break news about his own projects.

Dirty Mind. | 5/8/2009, 1:48 am EST

Anyone who diss Prince is a dumb ass!

jason | 5/8/2009, 1:58 am EST

most people here need to shut up.
you act like trent’s doing something wrong. princes new albums are horrible, and weezer, well does it really need to be said. Also stop saying trent just wants attention. He’s just saying the truth, why do artists have to stoop so low to get timbaland to produce their record. now that’s just dumb.

Dan M. | 5/8/2009, 2:06 am EST

Prince rocks! Trent Reznor is becoming every single thing that he hates, who knew? Really disapointing and embarrassing. He is turning into a fucking circus freak/side show.

jackson | 5/8/2009, 2:11 am EST

I love Prince more than any other artist and I loved Weezer’s first two albums, but truth be told, Trent’s right. I’m tired about hearing how their ‘vaults’ are full of awesome stuff, when their releases are consistently getting worse.

Another attempt @ attention. Now the press can write…”TR in love, bashes Prince and gives away free tickts to fans”. Its a cry for attention. He’s just pathetic. He has no shame at this point. I’ve never seen a “rock star” so hard up for attention. You would think being in love would give him a life outside of Twitter now. But nope…he is still being an attention whore.

NOLA | 5/8/2009, 2:35 am EST

This is just Trent’s sense of humor.

Anonymous | 5/8/2009, 2:54 am EST

Trent is totally dead on. Prince has consistently put out shitty releases for almost 20 years. Not since 1988’s “Lovesexy” has the man put out a record with more than one or two keepers. It’s frustrating when we know what he’s done. Sad really. I think he spends more time controlling things than actually making good music. He doesn’t allow creative input that challenges his own. He just does soft safe R&B/rock. AKA: ELEVATOR MOOZAK

Instant Karma. | 5/8/2009, 3:16 am EST

To the dumbfuck that comment this:

“He’s (Trent) just saying the truth”

There’s a big diference between objective criticism and trash talk, ask Perez Hilton.

Trent just went lower then I ever expected, even worse in a time were his best work is behind him, and that is the TRUTH.

Trent is a ignorant. | 5/8/2009, 3:32 am EST

So here we have a washed out artist dissing one of the greatest genius of the century.

Reznor is the first to do so? no.
Will this affect Prince? no.
Will this affect Reznor?. yes.
Reznor is a dick? yes.

Carmen. | 5/8/2009, 3:37 am EST

Somebody need to tell Trent Reznor that this is not 1994, trashing the 80s is not cool anymore, trashing the 90s is the new IT thing, so Trent Reznor go and fuck that goldigger and make your first good album in 15 years.

By the way I saw Prince in Coachella and he’s better then ever, kick ass guitar.

Jamila Suicide | 5/8/2009, 3:49 am EST

Give me a break, Prince has never been that great, and Weezer had one good album. NIN is twenty years of fantastic music. Trent is speaking his mind, and anyone who calls him washed up hasn’t been paying attention…

rivers | 5/8/2009, 3:56 am EST

Sorry, but in case of Weezer, he is totally right. What went wrong with them.
Weezer (blue) masterpiece
Pinkterton masterpiece
Weezer (green) very good
Maladroit good
make believe oh my good, very bad
Weezer (red) bad

REAL FACT | 5/8/2009, 5:03 am EST

Prince Dirty Mind, 1999, Purple Rain and Sign O The Times versus Downward Spiral?, Broken?… may be.

Reznor doesn’t got shit on Prince.

uhhh | 5/8/2009, 5:17 am EST

to the tard that called trent a fatass, have you seen him lately?! the guy is ripped and huge and could kick your fatass. whoever says that NIN is not relevant today is retarded, his last cd had a couple hits which is 2 more hits then princess’s last 5 cds combined if you count that Target garbage. Prince was great back in the day, not so much anymore.
the sell-out comments are ridic too, he really fucking sold out giving his latest cd to fans for free, a cd that i might add got stellar reviews compared to the crap reviews prince got….go back to the 80s when prince could write a song.

Peter S. | 5/8/2009, 5:19 am EST

The Downward Spiral is the worst album ever released. Prince and Weezer are releasing crap as well.

rad | 5/8/2009, 7:35 am EST

when did Q get the nose job?

trip with teacher | 5/8/2009, 9:14 am EST

I love NIN. The only great album by Prince is Purple Rain. Weezer have shit albums period. I quite enjoyed the Slip. Ghosts is way too indulgent.

BTW, Trent can’t negate his dorky ways with Twitter and the whole “here I am” Internet realm simply by being embittered. I only value him as a musician. Any one who can separate personality from artistic ouput, I can respect as people as well as being musicians.

Edjus | 5/8/2009, 9:24 am EST

Trent Reznor isn’t even a gnat on Prince’s ass.

Damn | 5/8/2009, 9:25 am EST

Reznor is right about EVERYTHING. And I don’t even like NIN!

Bah | 5/8/2009, 9:27 am EST

You’re all saying that Trent isn’t relevant, making this up to gain attention and shit.

Have you realized that you’re wasting your time posting comments about something he said in a FUCKING WEBCAM CHAT WITH A FAN POSTED ON HIS FORUM?

You think he’s not relevant yeah, but y’all spend half your time caring about what he said in a fucking chat with a fan, following him and listening to his latest “crappy” albums.

Way to go fellas!Who cares about Trent!

Anonymous | 5/8/2009, 9:33 am EST

Nine Inch Nails had a couple good early albums, and the rest of their (his) career has been self-indulgent drivel.

Prince had an amazing streak from about 1980-1987…. with a few exceptions, his output since then has been torturous.

Weezer’s first two albums were excellent, and then all subsequent albums sucked, save for a decent song or two.

None of these artists are stellar.

Busted HighNote | 5/8/2009, 9:34 am EST

The hell. Trent Reznor is a side effect and Prince is THE POPE. A loop is a loop is a loop & Reznor is loopy. His Babe is young enough to be his kid and she’s a dude.

Bah | 5/8/2009, 9:35 am EST

Also many props to RS for not writing about the other 99% clever things he said.

He considered Prince a genius,he just hated his latest outputs just as much as half (or more) of his fans. And he’s talking as a Prince fan,not as fucking prince of rock.I don’t think he considers himself better than Prince since he’s also praising him.

RS why don’t you write an article about that part in which he said that Bowie is a genius or that he love Dave Sitek’s work?

Oh brother.

My Name is PRINCE | 5/8/2009, 9:43 am EST

What is this u’re seekin’?
The syncopated rhymes are at their peak
When you jumped on my D.I.C.K.
That’s the one thing that I don’t play
The jock strap was 2 big 4 u anyway
U’re just a simpleton
I’ll bust u like a pimple, son
My star is 2 bright
Boy, I’ll sink u like the ship Poseidon Adventure
U’re bumpin’ dentures 2 be cocksure
There must be more coming from
your mouth than manure
So with a flow and a spray, I say hey
U must become a prince before u’re king anyway.

-My Name is PRINCE

Kevin H. | 5/8/2009, 9:50 am EST

Trent, Prince wrote this song – “Shockadelica” for the situation you are in. The smell of doom for sure.

Cyr | 5/8/2009, 10:24 am EST

Reznor has always admired Prince, he even cites him as an influence on PHM. Don’t blow some trivial fan-like chat out of proportions. Reznor may be a well-known artist himself but that doesn’t take away the fact that, as a fan, he’s entitled to like or dislike any Prince record. It’s not like he’s trying to “make some enemy” out of him…

Amish C. | 5/8/2009, 11:07 am EST

Please have this Trent Reznor train crash soon! WTF? Has he seriously lost his mind? Prince’s worst work is still 100 times better than anything Trent could spit out on his little computers. I wasn’t even aware Trent was still alive, let alone made records. He still seems very angry and out of touch. Isn’t this the guy who just got himself engaged after knowing someone a matter of days?

What happened to Weezer | 5/8/2009, 11:16 am EST

Prince has really had some bad albums lately and hasnt put anything good out in a decade. Weezer sounds just awful. Every song sounds the same and if they want to increase their revenue maybe they should write music for tampon commercials because that is the current depth of their music. Reznor is awesome and one of the most talented artists of the last twenty years.

InOurTime | 5/8/2009, 11:28 am EST

RIP NIN. I’m not a big prince fan, just a matter of taste. But the guy’s a genius. you’d have to be pretty dense not to see that. A hundred years from now when we read about the american popular music movement of the 20th century, Prince will be all over the place. Trent reznor…not so much. Luv the Drag Queen.

iwonderu | 5/8/2009, 11:31 am EST

So, this is just like Eminem and Everlast? I’m gonna diss you because you didn’t say hi to me in the hallway! Too Funny. TRENT GROW UP – U R 45 yrs. old.

Tony V. | 5/8/2009, 12:59 pm EST

Where’s the porno movies of your new girl Reznor? I heard their was one floating on the internet.

Jon G. | 5/8/2009, 1:52 pm EST

“Anonymous” is 100% correct: “NONE of these artists are stellar.” Prince’s influences have been blatantly transparent from the beginning of his career – Hendrix, James Brown, Sly, and one whom he tries but never succeeds in emulating, Stevie Wonder. Reznor has recorded less than a handful of truly good songs, and is a product of his electronic equipment. Cornell has a wonderful – even stunning voice, although he has lent it to weak material at times.

People are VERY loose throwing the word “genius” around…

…and Trent, I agree – you still CAN be a dick.

Jon G. | 5/8/2009, 1:54 pm EST

Oops – make that “prick.”

arch stanton | 5/8/2009, 2:17 pm EST

be better thatn the new crap….

RIP NIN | 5/8/2009, 2:45 pm EST

Everyone says how smart he is but you’ve got to wonder about a guy who only dates girls young enough to be his kids. He LOVES this attention and will no doubt put all of his business on the Internet. Reznor will hit at anything just for the vain attention. Prince has real class and ignores this punk.

Sober Blues | 5/8/2009, 3:52 pm EST

Does anyone notice how he always picks on people who he knows will never respond? Very Brandon Flowers of him. Why can’t he attack someone who will throw one right back at him, like Liam Gallagher? What a total coward he is.

OpinionsAreJustThat | 5/8/2009, 3:58 pm EST

Maybe this comes down to the notion that any press is good press… it’s not that big of a deal if Trent has an opinion about Prince or Weezer, especially ‘if’ they were bragging about having hundreds of great songs. Don’t brag about how awesome ‘you’ are if you’re a big rock star… that’s just sad… be humble. That just reminds me of Brian Wilson, who, in an interview by Guitar World was asked what his favorite ten songs were… he chose all his own songs… as if influence doesn’t come from anyone else.

Popular musicians should just be happy that anyone even cares at all… people with opinions are the main reason that anyone or anything becomes ‘popular’. Whether it’s Brian Wilson, Trent Reznor, Prince or Rivers… They all have their merits and they’ve probably all been arseholes at one time or another just like anyone else.

I think Reznor has shown most fans and music listeners who’ve heard of him that he is capable of releasing music with success. Even regardless of what he says about anyone, he still sells records. With or without record labels. It doesn’t matter if it’s better than Prince or Weezer or anyone. It doesn’t really matter if NIN is or isn’t your favorite band. Just look at the facts. He made enough money to tour off of an album that was available for free. If that isn’t genius, then I don’t know what is.

Vinc3nt | 5/8/2009, 4:18 pm EST

The majority of new music by anyone is crap these days. The key is can u kick it live. Prince had a decade where he was king. Few artists even last that long these days. Oh and I dare anyone 2 come close 2 Prince live!

Kid TJ | 5/8/2009, 5:07 pm EST

Prince = unquestioned genius. Virtuoso musician on multiple instruments. Unbelievable live performer. A historic musical figure.
Trent Reznor = Possibly a footnote to a footnote about music. Loud mouth. Can be funny. Not this time.

Nathan johnson | 5/8/2009, 5:07 pm EST

Do you not have anything good to say about music Trent? How about a positive opinion you fucking bitch. I can’t say anything positive about your last 4 albums you fucking flock of seagulls little bitch. NIN used to be creative and good, I can’t tell Trent from the band Orgy anymore. Yeah, I went there.

Eric | 5/8/2009, 5:23 pm EST

Princes Latest albums blew chunks,Weezer sounds the same in all their records. At least trent cares about his fans.i would just love to see either weezer or prince make a free album.

Carlos. | 5/8/2009, 5:34 pm EST

To the dumb guy that called himself: OpinionsAreJustThat

So are you saying that Trent is a genius because his still making $, well, The Jonas Brothers must be super geniuses.

By the way don’t confuse opinion with trashing.

Aaron. | 5/8/2009, 5:42 pm EST

To “Jon G.” you are completly wrong, with all due respect, you are another one of those people that judge Prince music by the obvious comparations, 1- because he’s a black musician, 2- because the popular songs. But it’s so obvious that you never hear the core of his best music or aleast you never read the first ten year of his music cirticism.

Sure Prince love’s Hendrix, James Brown, Sly (and Carlos Santana) etc. but he sounds nothing like them in his defined moments, actually he hardly sound like something you ever hear before (back then), examples:

“Dirty Mind” (1980) was a Funk record with a Punk attitude, in the beign of early Gary Newman but with a very big sexual innuendo and hardcore dance beats, including songs such as “Head,” about oral sex, “Sister” about incest, and “When You Were Mine”, this last one is the only song with clear solo guitars but is driven with a synth pop sound, there’s only one track that resembles good all Soul music, “Gotta Broken Heart Again”, but the rest is dark, upbeat, new wave.

“Controversy” (1981) is another ode to Punk/Funk with some turns like the rockabilly “Jack U Off.” or the bizarre german influenced “Annie Christian”, a creepy off-beat song about violence, really hard to descibre, the only song closer to RnB music is the ballad “Do Me, Baby”.

“1999″ (1982), this is a double album masterpiece, with a crazy mix of synth-and-drum machines with electro, house, techno and computers obssesions, “Automatic” is a ten minutes epic of bondage and synthesizers, closer to Kraftwerk then Sly Stone, “Something in the Water (Does Not Compute)” is another drum and bass track really ahead of its time, “All the Critics Love U In New York” is a dance number with a Devo touch. The computer theme is also reflected in the album’s instrumentation, with Prince fully embracing the gadgetry and sounds of emergent electro-funk and ’80’s sequencing technology on tracks like “Let’s Pretend We’re Married” and “All the Critics Love U in New York”. Perhaps the only song reminisce of a Hendrix guitar is the solo in “Lady Cab Driver”. Prince himself admitted at the time the movie Blade Runner was an influence on the album’s synth sound. The only song closer to traditional Soul/RnB music is “Free”. The “1999″ album might be Trent Reznor biggest influence.

“Purple Rain” (1984) well you all know this one. Best pop record ever.

“Parade” (1986) this is a jazziest album but at the same time (along with the album “Around The World in a day”, 1985) this is probably his closer thing to psychedelic funk (Sly, Brown, Clinton etc.), but it have nice surprises like “Kiss” the biggest defined moment of electro-funk ever.

“Sign O The Times” (1987) definitely the best album of the 80’s, with a radically minimalist, experimental arrangements on songs like “Housequake”, “The Ballad of Dorothy Parker”, and “Forever in My Life” but includes techno house music like “Hot Thing” or classic Rock n Roll like “Play In The Sunshine” but is the title track that resembles a weird foreign sound from Europe, with a repetitive drum machine in the backgorund and some heavy guitar riffs between the chorus, with a marching band type of climax (years before Radiohead) plus “Starfish and Coffee” the cutest, catchiest strange pop song ever and an amazing provocative Jazz number “If I Was Your Girlfriend”, the only tracks resemble of traditional Soul/RnB are “Slow Love” and “Adore” probably the best love song ever made.

“Lovesexy” (1988) a spiritual dance/punk record, you can say that is something like Gospel meets Tri-hop, I can see Trent Reznor taken the “You get me closer to God” thing from this record, very adventurous album, one of his most underrated and none commercial aproches, a big influence for the 90s Dj’s acts and a key inlfluenced on TV On The Radio latest “Dear Science”.

So if your gonna critizied Prince music, listen first, don’t come here and throw Hendrix/Brown comparations just because you saw a clip on MTV. I mean will you critized Nirvana sound based on “Smell like Teen Spirit”? Or the Radiohead sound based on “Creep”? I tough so.

Jimmy G. | 5/8/2009, 5:53 pm EST

Who is Trent Reznor? I don’t know who the hell he was. Nor do I care. I could ask the same question to every one I know… and they would give the same reply, ” Trent who…???”

According to ‘you guys’… he’s done some very fan friendly things with marketing himself to his fans. But what does that really have to do about his music? The only people who will utter his name in the same sentence with Prince are his own fans.. while everyone else is still asking “who?”.

Sissy W. | 5/8/2009, 6:06 pm EST

By the way, Reznor is a douchebag.

I’m not wearing any pants. *sigh*

lol He’s crazy.

caddie | 5/8/2009, 6:37 pm EST

all major record label music sucks, they are courting the 12-16 year old consumer and greasing the pockets of cummulus. the truth hurts. go trent. Rolling Stone has sucked for a long time now wow has the identical target market as the forementioned. people are idiots

Joel | 5/8/2009, 6:38 pm EST

Trent is funny, but, um, his last several albums have sucked a**. Talk about dredging your collection of outtakes and cast-offs for something you can call a release.

Still, I’m looking forward to seeing them at Shoreline.

jp | 5/8/2009, 8:22 pm EST

Yes Trent, we know you don’t have piles and piles of unreleased songs sitting around. You pretty much cleared that up when you released a 36 song instrumental album in which you didn’t even bother to name the tracks. Good stuff. Gotta love a guy with such reckless indifference towards irony.

50 Cent | 5/8/2009, 8:56 pm EST

Yo, wud up Trenty, yo b**ch a*s music sucks. You can’t touch me, you can’t touch us, we the best. You can’t even tune your geetar. Why donchu talk trash back to the master? You afraid? You trying to start static and controversy with them lame duck, no-looking-for-a fight MFers…come to The Real, or you scared you will be p’wned!???? I have a bet witchu…whoevers next albums sells least, retires from recording FO’EVER! I didn’t mean that last time when I got whupped by Kanye, but even I can outsell your cr*p! Put or shut-up B**CH! Let’s roll and I’ll burn your arse like you are Santa Barbara foothills!

michelecm | 5/8/2009, 9:10 pm EST

Trent’s entitled to his opinion, he makes some valid points, and I’m a fan of his work.

But his behaviour of late is concerning–why would an artist of his calibre choose to present himself as a prick? Sure it’s all rock star bullshit bluster, but too much of this ilk and you become a parody of yourself. It makes no sense to me. Please explain Mr. Reznor.

Now does anyone have any good bible quotes I can throw in there?

Casual Commenter | 5/8/2009, 9:24 pm EST

It’s interesting to see what’s being said in the posts. Rollingstone seems to think Reznor is going a little overboard here (judging by the dopey Reznor photo posted above), the fans certainly don’t like Prince being targeted and there is indifference to Rivers.

My opinion? Trents opinionated. He doesn’t hold back. I think he wants better material from Prince. He’s said he’s a fan in interviews I’ve read. I think he’s a demanding guy who doesn’t get the sense Prince is putting his all into his latest work.

Fans are too easy on their idols. I like Trent but as time goes on I do wonder if his material isn’t as strong as it used to be.

Maybe NIN should hang it up (I think that’s the plan anyway) but maybe Prince should take a bow too.

Act it | 5/8/2009, 9:55 pm EST

Lol, I just love how everyone here is lashing out at Trent for his arrogance…You guys do know that you put him on the pedestal that he’s on, right? The reason he’s been acting like such a prick lately is because we basically gave him permission to do so. Prior to this, Trent was untouchable. He could say whatever he wanted to and get away with it because he’s Trent Reznor, the genius behind Nine Inch Nails, therefore he knows everything there is to know about music, so we shouldn’t dare question him. Unless of course he insults a bigger legend, then that’s when he crosses the line. That’s exactly what’s gonna happen to Radiohead. We treat them like gods now and if they diss someone, we’ll automatically say they have a point. Until they have the nerve to say something bad about Paul McCartney or Bob Dylan. Then we’ll turn on them, too.

Trent Reznor sucks! | 5/8/2009, 10:03 pm EST

I guess Perez Hilton got competition.

I love it when people trash others in the media. It’s a fun little movie we can all dig into. It’s compelling at the very least. A little entertainment from entertainers is well, entertaining. Here we are now…thanks, Trent.

Chloe | 5/9/2009, 2:34 am EST

I’m still having a hard time accepting the fact he’s engaged. Partially because I expected him to just live alone in some goth mansion on some goth hill in some goth town the rest of his life, but mostly because I had to pay my best friend from the eighth grade $20 for finally proving he wasn’t gay.

BBorooah | 5/9/2009, 2:40 am EST

Trent Reznor is off his meds. First he gets engaged to someone he barely knows then he starts a fight with PRINCE. Damn. *Pssst* Trent, that’s a dude.

All hail Perez Hilton and the you tube comments.

Thanks Trent, get in line.

MCal | 5/9/2009, 6:16 am EST

Trent is a HUGE price fan.. Massive, and I think he’s just channeling his disappointment in one of his musical heroes and the by the numbers muzak he’s put out recently. If Prince was still inspired and had something to say he could still be brilliant.. But it doesn’t. I think we’re agreed on that. Cornell is an amazing vocalist, and I think again trent totally respects him for this and his past work, but come on doing the Timberland thing is just so sellout and weakens all his past triumph’s… I am biased in being a trent fan, and yes I know (as does he) that he can be a prick and run his mouth, but at least he speaks his mind and doesnt just follow the shallow celebrity culture, and imo NIN has been on a HUGE upswing creatively in the past few years. Making himself relevant again after being written off as a 90’s star.. It is a big deal. Like Corgan he as seen as almost a write off till say 2005.
Timberlands on record as being a Reznor fan, so maybe these comments will up his game too… just maybe..

Lee | 5/9/2009, 9:24 am EST

People equating NIN’s newer music to Weezer are complete idiots.

Rivers hasn’t written a good song since 1996’s Pinkerton. Then he goes and cries about how he can’t bring himself to write because people didn’t want to hear him sing about young Asian chicks because it’s creepy. That’s his excuse for crap like “Beverly Hills”, “Island In The Sun”, “Keep Fishing”, “Pork & Beans”. Rivers has been a joke for over a decade. You know nothing about good music if you think anything NIN has released compares to Weezer crap.

Plus Rivers is directly responsible for emo music so he should be put in jail for that.

Imp | 5/9/2009, 12:27 pm EST

Barely.

abha.shanker@pridetech.com | 5/9/2009, 12:41 pm EST

Trent Reznor snarls emo lyrics against pre-programmed GarageBand beats and blips his love for some cheap Ho. Too stupid. I guess love makes you dumb. Real dumb to strike out at Prince. Reznor is attention starved.

KRK | 5/9/2009, 1:19 pm EST

Chris Cornell and Prince are both legends. Trent Reznor is… not. He has some obvious, serious mental issues! Can’t even compare to Chris Cornell or Prince!

carrie | 5/9/2009, 1:20 pm EST

Act It has an amazing point……

THE FACTS | 5/9/2009, 3:20 pm EST

“Act it” is completely wrong.

The point here is that Trent Reznor is not a muscician muscician, he might be good with computers, but he doesn’t know everything there is to know about real MUSIC, he might understand how a Jazz record works but he could never made one, Does he play Sax? Does he play the guitar like Prince? I tough so.

Prince had his computer/sampling phase 25 years ago and he created almost every single thing NIN follows but your never see or hear Prince talking vaguely about how bad the last NIN records are (they were horrible). Trent have no class.

Prince albums aren’t as good as Sign O The Times or Purple Rain, but 35 years after his first record he still making great music.

How many years past by since The Downward Spiral? right, and Trent is making horrible pop records all ready, even worse his live shows are getting repetitive and boring.

So this why you see many comments here, because it’s so ironic that a washed out talented artist is dissing a genius who’s still rocks live.

But we have to give him credit that atleast he din’t went after a easy target, like the pathetic Radioheads going after Miley Cyrus

Who knew Perez Hilton will become the biggest influence on today rock stars..

dave p. | 5/9/2009, 3:22 pm EST

Trent Reznor is becoming every single thing that he hates, who knew. Really disappointing. He is turning into a fucking circus freak/side show.

shaunyd74 | 5/9/2009, 4:04 pm EST

Trent thanks Prince (as an influence)on the inside sleeve of 1989’s Pretty Hate Machine. He’s obviously a fan. Trent never questions Prince’s musical ability or genius, Trent simple wants to Prince to release another solid album…start to finish. Prince did this with ease throughout the first 10+ years of his career (Dirty Mind 1980 to Diamonds & Pearls 1991). It’s nice to hear a musicians opinion on the state of music, but guess what…none of us would give a shit about what Trent said, if we didn’t have our own opinions! I feel the same way about Prince. I have been a fan of his music for nearly 30 years, and yes, I still buy all of his records, but he hasn’t had a “Play it front-to-back”, album in years. Im not asking for him to make another “Sign of the Times” or “1999″, or to even revisit the sounds of those periods. I just want him to do what he always did, make “his” music, whatout compromise or caring about what the flavor of the month is in music, and kick ass! I want to find deep cuts that could easily have been radio hits (i.e. “Let’s Pretend We’re Married”, “Darling Nikki”, “Glam Slam”, Jack U Off”, “Elephants & Flowers”).

My point is, we all have opinions, Me, U, Trent, Prince…take ‘em all with a grain of salt. Im not gonna stop listening to Prince or NIN just because someone else doesn’t like their new music…Im gonna stop listening, if I don’t like the music.

no longer a fan | 5/9/2009, 4:25 pm EST

I agree..what else is Reznor going to pull. He’s turning into a joke. From talking s*** about people to pulling a silly pr stunt “marrying” a woman who is only concerned about getting promotion for her crappy band and spending his money–oh, and they met on Twitter 3 weeks ago–…all for PUBLICITY. He is an attention seeking Fool. Never thought I’d say that, but it’s true. He’s lost a lot of fans…and he’s getting laughed at.

The fact checker. | 5/9/2009, 5:55 pm EST

Although I believe that Trent’s comments are ill advised, “THE FACTS” proves to be extremely ignorant. First, what is this “Real Music” you speak of? Industrial is not any less real music than the jazz/funk/ pop you listen to, just as Jazz is not any less real music than classical. Furthermore, you do understand that actual instruments are played on NIN albums including guitar, bass, drums, and Keyboard? Do you also understand that Reznor plays all the instruments on his records?

You should also realize that you prove your own hypocrisy by stating that Reznor should not critique others music w/o being able to make a Jazz album but, clearly you would have no clue how to write and record an industrial album.

Teznor has had his well documented bouts of writer’s block. I am sure that at the heart of his statements there is some insecurity and offense taken at the prospect that Prince and Rivers have stock piles of songs in their back pocket and don’t release them while he struggled for years to put the Fragile together. It seems like an insult to musicians and their fans alike for Prince and Rivers to hold back great material yet still let people know of its existence.

Especially with Rivers because a lot of the leaked B-sides ect. are really quite good in my humble opinion.

While I do think it is inappropriate for an artist to question another artist’s work in public and Trent probably should have kept his mouth shut, your post wreaks of ignorance and hypocrisy (not to mention spelling and grammar errors) and you needed to be called out.

alex | 5/9/2009, 6:01 pm EST

NIN is no Foetus.

Trey | 5/9/2009, 6:13 pm EST

NOTE TO EVERYONE ELSE: THIS IS HOW YOU BREAK DOWN REZNOR’S COMMENTS!

1. He said that Rivers Cuomo and Prince brag about their extensive unreleased catalog. This is true. That’s why Prince just released three albums and Cuomo’s got his “Home Recordings” series.

2. While he didn’t attack Cuomo (seeing as how “Alone I & II” are good) he did attack Prince (seeing as how he HASN’T made a good record in a while). So, this is also true.

3. I liked Soundgarden and I liked Audioslave, and I consider Cornell to be the greatest living rock singer… but Chris Cornell’s solo stuff sucks. He can’t write an entire record all by himself like Reznor can.

SO! There you have it. Reznor was right. Shut up about it and move on.

___ | 5/9/2009, 6:59 pm EST

I laugh at whoever thinks Reznor’s computers do all the work.

Steve | 5/9/2009, 7:43 pm EST

NIN no relevance. | 5/9/2009, 9:01 pm EST

What Trent Reznor did after his first 5 records? “Year Zero” LOL!

Yeah the future looks bright for NIN.

No one cares about Trent’s opinions. For someone claiming to be “happy,” he is still acting like a miserable jerk. Just today he was posting personal information on his Twitter account on where to find some girl he doesn’t like. How pathetic is that? Yeah, real class act all the way. Focus on putting out some decent music for a change, because son, yours has sucked for the past ten years also. Don’t let the gold digger bleed you dry (although it sounds like you deserve it). Same a**hole he’s always been.

To THE FACTS (by the way, when you type in caps you come across as a moron): so what if Reznor makes music using synthesizers?

Could Al Dimeola do what Reznor does? Maybe, but he’d have a hard time making something as awesome as the downward spiral. My point is that to compare jazz musicians with synth musicians like reznor is like comparing apples and oranges.

If making music with synths is so easy, why don’t you try? there’s a reason that Reznor is famous and you are not. it is because he has dedicated his life to his music and made a few really great albums. just because he doesn’t have technical skills on GUITAR, doesn’t mean his synthesizer skills should be ignored.

Trent is probably the responsible of the 90s failure, his a very talented artist but talent isn’t everything, just look at Billy Corgan.

Anyone that thinks that trashing another artist will give you any credibility is a stupid asshole.

Welcome to the Phill Collins club Trent.

Icantstoppartying | 5/10/2009, 1:38 am EST

I don’t know about Prince but I can’t remember Rivers Cuomo ever saying he had hundreds of ‘great’ songs. In the liner notes from alone 2, Cuomo wrote that he plucked the best songs he recorded over the years and put them on the alone records. He also wrote that plenty of the songs weren’t that good at all.

LOL! | 5/10/2009, 2:06 am EST

Methinks he isn’t as clean as he claims anymore. Drug use would explain alot of this bizarre crap.

Kaye B. | 5/10/2009, 12:00 pm EST

I think Reznor has been acting like a huge tool. He is having a mid life crisis and is acting out for all the years he repressed his true persona. He should be happy and busy now that he is engaged but he spends his time lashing out at other people. Sounds very bitter and insane.

Tommy | 5/10/2009, 12:10 pm EST

Remember what that agent in the Matrix said about humans being like a disease that just spreads? That’s YOU, bra. Trying to get your SHIT pumped into their heads at any cost:

“Take it away, steal it, download the new NIN app! Yes, you too can be a professional groupie with your iPhone for only 99 cents!” -Trant Reno

But this is nothing new to him, Trent’s always dissed other musicians.

One would think that with all that success that it’s enough. (But apparently not.) Climbing the charts by pulling other people down… Makes perfect sense. Works for Eminem and it’s funny.

PAST VICTIMS: Limp Bizkit, Billy Corgan, Gene Simmons, Marylin Manson, Radiohead, Sheryl Crow.

Seriously though, Price is an easy target. Tell Em his shit sucks- See what happens…

George W. Bush | 5/10/2009, 12:11 pm EST

(In his warped mind) TR must think that because he’s succeeded in his nitch market of noise music, that it’s ok for him to dictate what sounds good to other people. So no, it’s not a fair or an accurate remark at all.

I don’t get up here saying NIN’s “With Teeth” sucked… You know it, I know it, I’m not gonna say it.

“Do you BITE… the HAAAAAAAND that feeds you?” lolz. Good one.

Tony Puleo | 5/10/2009, 12:29 pm EST

ATTN MUSIC CRITICS:

SHUT… THE FUCK… UP!

Everybody thinks they’re a fucking critic these days- AS IF the song was written specifically just for YOU and it didn’t live up to your expectations. Could you cry any harder?

What do you critics hope to gain by publicly saying something sucks? Do you hope to change the opinions of those who think it rocks? That sounds pretty fascist to me.

Let those who like it, enjoy themselves. If you don’t like Hannah Montana, don’t listen to it. It wasn’t made for you. (That means you too, Trent. As a NIN fan, these comments disappoint me and I’m sure they disappoint Chris Fletcher too.)

When will the world learn the true meaning of music? Or a song. When will the world come to realize the psychology of sound and the mind? I honestly can’t see why anyone would release an album to an ungrateful public who’s armed and ready to steal it, dissect it and downplay it.

So fuck you all.
My last album sucked too.
Hopefully, it will never reach the likes of your ears.

-Count Fucking Monaco, Bitch

I just wish he would have taken aim at “artists” who are relevant to the times. I mean, who really gives a sh*t about prince anymore?Who’s given a sh*t about him since the very early 90’s?

The only people listening to Weezer is their friends & family.

Chris Cornell is and has been one of the most annoying voices in the genre. If it wasn’t for Tom Morello, Cornell’s mediocrity would have been forgotten long ago.

With all this said, I have to wonder about Trent these days. Before we know it, he’ll be walking off stage randomly, fighting fans, and rumor himself to be releasing the next NIN album … only for that album to come 15 years later, and suck.

Catch my drift?

Trent does have the right to his own opinion (as we all do). However, the combination of presenting them in such a public forum, so obnoxiously & tactlessly… he will obviously receive backlash… whether this concerns him or not.. is another issue. But I will say one thing… I think that maybe he needs to take a break & time to self-reflect before he spirals out of control.

You said it all and your glory burns

And there seems to be a problem here.
Your state of emotion seems too clear.
You rise and fall like wall street stock
And you had an affect on our happy talk…’

sgoel | 5/11/2009, 8:13 pm EST

Trent Reznor is like an old bum on a ham sandwich. Tryin’ to race up the charts by pulling other people down. He and his new cheap wife are pyschos.

Whirlpool | 5/11/2009, 11:06 pm EST

This dude is pals with Diddy (yes, “Puff Daddy” Diddy) and he’s calling out Prince? That’s like being friends with Britney Spears and saying Radiohead sucks! Check out this loser’s latest tweet: “Diddy’s so far ahead of the game in so many areas it really shouldn’t surprise me he’s beat our system.”
Yeah, but Prince sucks?
Get over yourself, idiot.

Roy | 5/12/2009, 10:41 am EST

Trent Reznor is really messed up to talk about Prince like that. Recently he instigated a beef with a fan (a member of the general public). Thrashhits reports on his recent comments regarding a fan. Trent is sounding maniac.

Jordan | 5/12/2009, 11:30 am EST

As always, my man Trent is spot-on and totally hilarious!

inrainbows50 | 5/12/2009, 4:11 pm EST

I stand up for Trent Reznor because I believe that relevant criticism has got an important role to play. If there is anyone here who thought that Cornell’s last record sounded remarkable then please let me know which songs you meant because I cound not find any. As for Prince I think that we can all agree when I say that Prince is one of the most talented artist to walk on earth and hence we expect the best from his talent. Therefore it’s somehow painful to accept that an artist od such calibre has not released a spectacular album over some time now.
I know that it’s hard to be objective but this time Trent criticised constructively.

George Matte | 5/12/2009, 4:13 pm EST

I WANT FREEDOM AWAY FROM TRENT REZNOR. TAKE YOUR BALL AND GO HOME TRENT. Nobody cares what Trent Reznor nor his skanky girlfriend says. Grow up Trent.

Eric | 5/12/2009, 9:25 pm EST

What is he doing marrying someone after a couple days? I think clinical depression is a serious thing.

Nostraboris | 5/13/2009, 12:04 am EST

Great to see a “celebrity” who’s public opinions are not toned down, polite versions of his real opinions.

And the last 20 years of Prince’s stuff do lick balls, sorry.

Nimbus | 5/13/2009, 2:50 am EST

Ooh, Trent’s being a bad-ass, everyone better watch out!

Dude, please. You’re just a desperate, middle-aged clown.

Sylver | 5/13/2009, 12:45 pm EST

Mr Reznor is like a middle aged drunk dialler only with twitter and a net connection instead of phone. It wouldn’t be so bad if he’d released anything half decent lately but The Slip sounded like a b-sides album and all we can really say in it’s favour is it was free to download. Still he was posting bs back in the day calling Bill Leeb the Marc Almond of industrial; some folkers never change regardless of age.

Ryan Brogan | 5/13/2009, 2:36 pm EST

Is Trent Reznor ever going to grow up? I used to be a big NIN fan but he’s spent the better part of two weeks now being a complete ass. Quickie engagement to a bimbo, attacking fans, attacking other artists, then he’s “sad” that the crowd’s not into his concerts. Trent needs to put down the toys and grow up.

C. Hernandez | 5/13/2009, 11:26 pm EST

I would agree with Trent reagarding Prince releasing album after album of unimpressive material. His last 3 albums, 3121, Planet Earth, and Elixir\LotusFlow3r\MPLSound could have been narrowed down to 1 great album. As for Rivers Cuomo, my guess is that he’s referring to his solo recordings (2-albums worth of material) and others. I can’t see how it really applies even if it included material from Weezer. Regardless of anyone’s thoughts on these particular artist’s efforts, Trent used them as a example in a response to a question regarding his own unreleased material. Please watch/listen to the interview for yourself.

Sterling Booth | 5/13/2009, 11:55 pm EST

Trent Reznor is having a midlife crisis and has gone crazy. I loved the past 3 albums by Prince. Trent is hateful and can’t sell his concert tickets. Whereas, Prince sold out 21 nights in London last year. Trent’s NIN/JA tour is doing poorly – just read the reviews. Poor attendence, tech problems, crowd apathy, and overpriced merchandise.

bcassidy@allianceglobalservice | 5/17/2009, 12:55 pm EST

Trent Reznor needs to retire soon. I went to the SD concert and it was WEAK. NIN and TR has turned into a joke. Reznor’s voice has gone due to the anabolic steroids. At least Prince & Weezer still have their voices and put on a good show. I agree Reznor needs to grow up and stop taking cheap shots at other artists when his performance has gone downhill.

Balls to your mom. | 5/20/2009, 12:09 pm EST

Oh boy….I’m thinking everyone on this comment board, and all the musicians that are out there ( including Tent). Are stroking themselves a little to hard here. Come on!! Main stream music just blows. There isn’t any risk taking anymore. It just seems that all the artists just put out their music, and we just go on our knees, and receive facials. For fuckskae!!! Go listen to some G.G Allin.

zoe | 5/21/2009, 5:07 am EST

i didn’t want to say anything about the ninja tour…but it wasn’t that great…he’s my fav. artist but the show kinda sucked, even the song selection…the show in general wasn’t great…the show started at 8:15 ended at 9:50…they were having some sound difficulties when he was singing…DON’T GET ME STARTED ON THIS NEW ENGAGEMENT! YEAH HE’S A PRICK! THIS NEW GIRL MIGHT BE STUPEFIED W/ ALL THE FAME AND MONEY! BUT I’M SURE THAT JOY WON’T LAST…MAYBE THE MONEY WILL!! I’M VERY SURE SHE’S ENJOYED IT! AND SHE SHOWS IT QUITE WELL! … she’s just in it for the fame and money…i’m sure she thinks he’s the best she can ever get…not that he’a price…he’s all used up…drugs and girls i’m sure…

deusex182@gmail.com | 5/29/2009, 1:33 am EST

Prince’s performance was the best EVER, at the Super Bowl.

Ethan

cathartik@cathartik.com | 5/29/2009, 1:36 am EST

No surprise. Filled with hate and bitterness. Only NiN song I ever hear is Closer. When was the last time Trent rocked the Super Bowl? Still, hands down, best Super Bowl performance ever by PRINCE. BTW, I love Weezer too!

Oprah Apple | 6/2/2009, 1:28 pm EST

Trent can have an opinion all he wants. It doesn’t mean that he doesn’t sound like some lameass 15 year old hipster. He wouldn’t be caught dead praising anything mainstream because that’s not cool anymore. lame and insincere

YourshitsmellstooTrent | 6/2/2009, 3:14 pm EST

Looks like Trent needs to go back to drugs. He´s boring as hell and his last shows were all smoke and mirrors crap.

the one | 6/3/2009, 10:20 am EST

You sound like an old man tapping his cane…

lady | 6/3/2009, 11:09 am EST

oh trent. i think you’re one of those people who hates on anyone who has done well in their life and has better shit than you. like a fun-hater. shit’s weak.

Paul | 6/3/2009, 3:21 pm EST

Except Reznor’s a god.

Elise | 6/3/2009, 8:07 pm EST

I never thought I’d see the day when Trent Reznor of all people lowers himself to the level of a friggin’ Twitter whore prick who does nothing on it all day but slag off everybody in sundry for doing the exact same thing he has done for close to a decade now! Why couldn’t he have just stuck to chatting with his fans about NIN related stuff instead, which was his original intention wasn’t it? Needless to say it’s all very hypocritical and pathetic on his part, and indeed it does make him as others have already said, sound like a petty, embittered, hectoring old man or something. I also don’t believe he’s as happy as he claims to be either and I’d give his upcoming marriage to that one little Asian-American chick, who looks half his age by the way, two years tops! You know I used to have some respect for this guy as the talented and visionary artist/musician that he was at one time, but his work here in the last few years has most definitely declined greatly and apparently the same goes for his attitude as well. Trent, get it together man and show a little professionalism and tact. You are not the god of industrial metal or whatever that you perceive yourself to be, and are in fact just like the rest of us and fully capable of making a public ass out of yourself as you have made abundantly clear here recently :(

Driftwood | 6/4/2009, 12:07 am EST

These comments are so inane. There’s no need for Prince (or Weezer) fans to get pissed about Trent Reznor’s comments. To put it into perspective, compare the quality of Prince’s “LOtUSFLOW3R” to any of his albums from the ’80s. I love Prince’s music & I consider myself to be a big fan, but I bought & listened to “LOtUSFLOW3R” several times & it’s nothing compared to his heyday. The same thing is true for Weezer; “The Red Album” isn’t nearly as good as, well, any of their other albums. At least with Nine Inch Nails, “Year Zero” & “The Slip” are just as good as the album most consider to be his best, “The Downward Spiral”. Besides, Reznor didn’t sound bitter at all when he made those comments.

Hmmm | 6/4/2009, 12:06 pm EST

Nothing about Trent’s last 2 album’s that sucked…

AMc799 | 6/4/2009, 3:33 pm EST

You can go down the list of the NIN catalogue and pick out very few weak productions. All Three acts (NIN Weezer Prince) are all successful in their own right but the truth is while Reznor’s music grew, expanded, and matured, the other acts did not. “Red Album” could very well have been a collection of ‘B’ sides. And Prince didn’t age well either so for them to boast that they have deep libraries of unreleased genius is going to provoke someone, anyone, to say “prove it,” and they can’t. I personally was pissed when I bought “alone.” I would never have paid $15 knowing that is was a bunch of shotty basement produced demos that never became fully realized songs. I’m a huge fan of Trent’s of Rivers’ and admittedly not so much of Prince’s but at the end of the day only one of them has kept their integrity and continued to grow.

In closing I don’t think it’s Reznor’s place to call out these acts for their mediocraty, but I do believe he is speaking the truth.

haha | 6/6/2009, 10:23 pm EST

Its funny listening to all of you. He can say whatever he wants to because its his right. And I doubt he really gives a shit about all you low ass people who actually think commenting on trent does anything but boast your own egos. That’s why he is a rich music artist and your sitting on your cheap little computers with your panties in a bunch

German | 6/18/2009, 5:56 am EST

WOW! so many Trent haters here.. I would agree that his recent tour has SUCKED! he’s not even going out w/ a bang. His voice is not the same…his shows are so plain and boring…paying all that money when he’s not even closing the show.i’m very disappointed…he’s even twitting 24/7 …he recently got engaged to some really annoying, nobody, fame whore..uggg! trent is LAme! he’s not a bad ass as he use to be… he’s so desperate to find someone all he can is some hoochie groupie…i feel sorry for that girl.

NINisANON | 6/24/2009, 3:32 pm EST

What??? Stop Twittering your self Reznor. The ONLY good cd you ever did was Downward Spiral and that was NO Sign O’ The Times or Purple Rain or even 3121

VirgoLibra8 | 6/25/2009, 8:21 pm EST

i think in the case of chris cornell, prince, weezer, radiohead & manson getting dissed it’s more of constructive criticism because those are bands he used to like that are now putting out in his opinion sub-par material. the state of mainstream music is at an all time low in terms of creativity and substance and now that trent is leaving, it’s like he’s trying to motivate some legends to make amazing albums.

mnash81 | 6/25/2009, 9:55 pm EST

I am not writing this in defense of Trent Reznor. I feel he does not need defending. I do feel that this this comment board is a great social experiment. For those of you that are so outraged by someone speaking his opinion on artists he probably likes to an extent. And for those of you that say he is tearing people down to build himself up, you are doing the same thng by tearing him down and his girlfriend who has nothing to do with this. Most of you are reaching. Reznor does what he does. He actually has been one of the few artists who actually think about what the fans want. That alone is some pretty stand up shit.
And if you told him his music sucks, he would probably say “maybe your right”, and do you really think trent reznor gives a shit about playing the superbowl. There is a reason why he has never played “SNL” or performing at the MTV music awards one fucking time. And I would love to know what you think a great nine inch nails song should sound like.

Mojo | 6/29/2009, 12:21 am EST

I disagree with mnash81, he is defending Reznor’s bad behavior. Notice that Reznor slams both Cornell & Prince the week that their new cds hit the market. Reznor is a true PRICK. NIN does NOT even compare to Prince’s legendary status in any shape nor form. It seems that Reznor has nothing to do except lash out at musicians, fans and various random people. He is a poor excuse for a man. In fact, Reznor thinks his fans are a clueless and tasteless idiots. (Also, plump & unattractive) Can’t wait till he wakes up and smells the coffee and realizes that no one is interested in what he has to say nor his music.

Anthony T. | 6/29/2009, 1:13 am EST

I am tired of Trent Reznor dragging artists and fans through the mud. And frankly it is kinda weird a man his age blows up like that in public. I’m pretty sure he hit his stride in the mid-90s.

Reznor is not relevant. When Industrial Nation came out, he had nothing good to say about any other musician, and no other musician had anything good to say about him. Go home punk.

VirgoLibra8 | 7/1/2009, 11:15 pm EST

you may not like what reznor is saying about various artists these days but nine inch nails is far from “irrelevant” within music these days, “with teeth” debuted at #1 in 2005 and had 3 #1 singles on various billboard charts, year zero debuted at number 2 in 2007 with limited media promotion. when he went independent ghosts I-IV was the highest selling mp3 album in 2008 on amazon and the slip had 1.5 million downloads worldwide last year when it was released for free online. that’s not my opinion, that’s just the facts.

Marshall Hill | 7/2/2009, 4:35 am EST

Trent Reznor said “I’m trying not to become a parody of myself..” and yet here you are.

I didn’t know Trent Reznor still makes music? All those years he spent being an unproductive, shut-in alcoholic? Now, Reznor is in every butthole. Perhaps if he knew what was involved with making a great record,i would allow you to get away with that comment, but sadly the man has put out trash music.

Stuart | 7/2/2009, 4:54 am EST

Trent Reznor keeps writing variations on the same depressing theme and he’s been a bore for some time. “Pretty Hate Machine” has a song Reznor stole from Skinny Puppy and “The Downward Spiral” doesn’t have the any staying power. Most of his cds only sell to his hard-core fans. Reznor shouldn’t be complaining about the quality of other peoples’ music. I’m not wild about any of NIN’s work and I wrote Reznor off long ago. Maybe instead of griping about other musician’s efforts, Reznor should be more concerned about his own one-dimensional music.

wheresyourgrip | 7/14/2009, 7:19 am EST

damn…this is crazy. Everyone chill. Trent said some harsh shit he’s got his opinions and we all do. trent is very frustrated with the way things are going right now with the music scene and business. its changing, and maybe for the worst, its all abt money and shit now. Trent see’s that and maybe he should chill out and just keep his mouth closed and accept it and jkeep doing what he’s doing best. Instead of embarassing himself and looking like a douche. Then again rappers do it all the time. creativity is a dying flame out there. BUt good inspiring loving music will always prevail.

John Ivers | 7/15/2009, 8:56 am EST

Trent Reznor is a hateful and mentally ill man. His music is targeted to alienated kids. His poor excuse for music is depressing and whiney music. Since his music never sold as many cds as Prince, Reznor’s jealousy causes him to strike out at Prince. I never found NIN’s music as being very creative. In fact, on PHM there is a song that is almost exactly a Skinny Puppy song! Reznor is a talentless putz.

Remixt | 7/27/2009, 6:49 pm EST

NIN lost it’s edge after “The Downward Spiral”, in my opinion. The creativity on PHS and TDS far outshine anything I have hear from this band/group/entity. But most of the music out there sucks right now. Welcome to the pack, Trent.

Simon | 7/28/2009, 5:56 pm EST

Next up? Trent replaces Paula on American Idol.

chris | 8/6/2009, 10:38 am EST

trent reznor is trash was trash and will always be trash last time I heard one of his songs back in the fuckin nineties get a life dude and put out some real music you fuckin fraud

TrentGenius | 8/7/2009, 2:30 am EST

Trent Reznor is music god…prince is purple pain

Deney | 8/9/2009, 9:22 am EST

Calm down. A musician can also be a fan. And twitter is what it is. That’s it.

And comparing NIN to Prince is like comparing a slalom skier to a freestyle swimmer. Yes they both race, but in very different ways.

The irony here is that some people want to read what famous people say on twitter – then criticise them for being human. They can’t win.

I don’t want Trent or Prince or anyone telling me what I want to hear on Twitter. I want them telling me what they feel.

And for the record, attacking someone’s fiance who has no part in this? That’s just cowardly. Like kicking your enemies little sister. Very very uncool.

12345 | 8/9/2009, 11:47 pm EST

hahaha i love it! reznor is the man!

rable | 8/26/2009, 2:02 pm EST

I dont think its to cool to talk crap about anyone in public… having said that; I find NIN to be an awesome band, The Fragile is brilliant and the new stuff is also good. I think its neat that their music has evolved. The wave goodbye tour is great, rarely have I seen such a good live performance.. nevertheless I think he should keep his opinions to himself. I saw the interview (cornell content) and it was I think it has been blown out of proportion, to me it seemed he was just jokingly talking crap…

Gamed | 8/30/2009, 7:27 pm EST

Most NIN fans feel fucking played because their hero was considered to be this super intelligent, thoughtful guy but turns out to be a really stupid piece of turd. But that’s what you deserve when you put a rock star who pens something like “Big Man with a Gun” on a fucking peddlestool.

fattgrrls@gmx.com | 9/3/2009, 12:36 pm EST

Trent Reznor belongs to the CULT of SELF -all about image and no substance and full of entitlement attitude. His 15 minutes are up! Someone stop this no-talent thing.
