U2 Debut “Magnificent” Clip Online

5/6/09, 11:18 am EST

You can always count on U2 to deliver eye-catching music videos, but with director Alex Courtes, the Irish rockers may have found their muse. Together, the pair has produced some truly wondrous, cinematic stunners, including 2004’s “Vertigo” and “Get On Your Boots,” the first single from the band’s twelfth studio set, 2009’s No Line on the Horizon.

But while “Boots” presented fans with a striking, green-screen rendered visual collage amid a captivating performance from Bono and company set in the cosmos, the four-and-a-half minute clip for U2’s second single, “Magnificent,” which debuted on the band’s site this morning, utilizes the beautiful city of Fez, Morocco, as its backdrop.

Shot in March, the video consists largely of another brilliant performance from U2, inside the garden of a local riad. But the action does shift between U2’s performance, close-up imagery of people running through the city, and wide shots of the city, its buildings draped in white sheets, which slither off the tops of palatial mosques and the tiled rooftops of the North African city.

The video also features slice-of-life footage shot within the medieval city, of its ancient edifices, its bustling markets, its denizens toiling and its youth playing.

The song, which was originally titled “French Disco,” revolves around a pair of lovers “holding on to each other and trying to turn their life into worship,” No Line producer Daniel Lanois said in a recent interview. “We wanted to have something euphoric and Bono came up with that little melody. And he loved that melody, and stuck with it. Almost like a fanfare. And then I was involved in the lyrical process on that, because we wanted to talk about sacrifice that one makes for one’s medium or one’s art.”

U2 lost me when they started putting “art” before the music. Just another group that forgot they were once a rock & roll band…and a damn good one.

Kurt | 5/6/2009, 1:58 pm EST

Yawn.

Jim | 5/6/2009, 2:02 pm EST

This song sucks..and is just a giant corporate band now, that only cares about money.

Rolling Stone, how long are you going to kiss U2’s ass? They could take a shit, and you would give it 4 stars at least (if not 5)

Burt | 5/6/2009, 2:38 pm EST

A great song and a video to match. Like Bowie, the Beatles and many others, U2 knows art and music are not mutually exclusive.

greg | 5/6/2009, 2:41 pm EST

great song. the video isn’t too bad either. Couldn’t disagree with the other posters – No Line On The Horizon is a modern-day U2 masterpiece.

jm | 5/6/2009, 3:29 pm EST

that is a great song

jm | 5/6/2009, 3:30 pm EST

that is a great song

Kevin | 5/6/2009, 3:36 pm EST

I love the video and the song. U2’s latest classic is a modern worship tune. How fitting.

Jim Kurt Ray Trash | 5/6/2009, 4:52 pm EST

live your life…the music video is simple, no time to do it best, have a hair at the top in 0.18 min

Saad | 5/6/2009, 6:57 pm EST

I hate how U2 have started using special effects in all their recent music videos. starting from elevation all their videos seem tacky and forgettable. i think simplicity works best for them.. a good example of that would be beautiful days video

Mike Hutchins | 5/6/2009, 7:21 pm EST

U2’s story–like most artists—is a sad one. Started out being meaningful. Sold soul–in a very literal way. Now the very definition of mediocrity. Paul and Dave—what did you exchange to get where you are? Paul, you’ve got $$$ now. Asking everone to coexsist. You coexsist with the elite and pretend to an everyman. I’m sorry i ever listened to you guys. people starving and you pay $$ to have your favorite hat flown to you. Reap what you sow.

Amit | 5/6/2009, 7:32 pm EST

Amazing video and song. This is definitely one of U2’s top 5 songs in my opinion. a masterpiece.

jane | 5/6/2009, 7:50 pm EST

i like u2´s songs but i think this is not the best video for the band.

joe | 5/6/2009, 7:57 pm EST

While its true that Bonos voice is not as strong as it once was (which I,unlike a lot of other U2 fans wont admit), this is still a great song. U2 at 75% of what they used to be is still better than most bands today at 100%.

His Prince Michael | 5/6/2009, 10:38 pm EST

Magnificent, even from a purely
creative standpoint: They’ve never
stood still.

Saint Subversive | 5/6/2009, 11:05 pm EST

Great song, great album, and Ill be at the Sam Boyd show in October. Achtung Vegas, Baby! :)

john | 5/7/2009, 12:31 am EST

Great stuff

Thomas | 5/7/2009, 12:32 am EST

Why couldn’t U2 have retired while they still had their dignity?

Ezra in Madrid | 5/7/2009, 5:32 am EST

Loved the pacing of the video…beautiful…I just missed the 180 crane cam shot of the Edge on top of one of the buildings when his slide bar solo busts in…I miss those iconic Guitar God moments like in the Sydney Zoo tour video when the Edge improvises a sort of sideways moonwalk across the stage during Mysterious…or like the infamous shedding of light upon the Edge by Bono with flood light in Rattle and Hum. After all, the Edge is one of the most original guitarists ever to sling distorted, twangy sound waves into the atmosphere. This video would have pushed us over the brink with a couple shots of that magic.

Pam Bonamusica | 5/7/2009, 6:54 am EST

MAGNIFICENT U2! The way the video connects a strong performance from U2 with views of Fez is great. Alex Courtes captures so much of this place with its outstanding architecture and people. The splendid images of this city create an atmosphere that expresses the pure beauty of this song so well. I love the moment when all the white sheets slither upwards and shadows disappear as we hear “Only love can leave such a mark”. This is one of the most beautiful and radical lines with a catchy melody. I remember one morning when I woke up with that melody in my head. In my opinion “Magnificent” is one of U2´s clear highlights full of beautiful soundscapes that are both powerful and atmospheric. This song creates something deeply spiritual.

U2 lift me up.

G-Man | 5/7/2009, 9:08 am EST

This is Huge.

The argument that U2 are in it for the money is just stupid. If they were they’d churn out albums/tours every 2 years. Instead they take risks with their music and have the most innovative/expensive live sets in the business.

Marco Macri | 5/7/2009, 10:29 am EST

I think the new video for Magnificent does not do the song justice. I personally find the video a major bore and very not like the exciting u2 I have known before. they should of record the video LIVE like they did on the David Letterman Show…now that would of been raising the song on a pedestal high above the heavens…that would of been justice.

Mike S | 5/7/2009, 10:31 am EST

Great song.

Jogger50xl | 5/7/2009, 1:31 pm EST

Good tune, very U2-ish. Unlike any album they’ve done before how it comes across on their 360 tour will ultimately tell us how good this album is. I’ve never seen such a wide discrepency in opinions of a U2 album.

Anonymous | 5/7/2009, 4:13 pm EST

LOL, disappointing. What else is that song but a rehash of all U2ness.

Ari | 5/7/2009, 5:48 pm EST

Who are these morons who use “of” instead of “have”? Gosh.

Andrea | 5/7/2009, 9:14 pm EST

U2 playing “magnificent” at Somerville theater in Boston is epic,in the biblical sense. Check out in Youtube. In my opinion, this should be the official video.

kj | 5/7/2009, 9:48 pm EST

i have a question……when the fuck is u2 going to go away?

Pam | 5/8/2009, 5:48 am EST

Ari, you´ve also used a wrong word, by the way.

Rich CT | 5/8/2009, 9:46 am EST

I used to like this band, until I heard their music without the synthesizers to fill it out! they can barely play! They use recorded backing music in concert, because I have NEVER seen a keyboard/synth player on stage, but yet the sound is there? In addition, this album sucks, its ounds exactly like 20 other songs they already “wrote” if you want to call it that.

Torontotoad | 5/8/2009, 2:39 pm EST

Agree with Dave…album ranks along with the best they’ve done. I like the Fez look too..

Black ♠ | 5/9/2009, 2:31 pm EST

Jim you are an idiot you low life

Black ♠ | 5/9/2009, 2:43 pm EST

U2 is the greatest F#!*$ band! Hail to the chief!

Saint Subversive | 5/9/2009, 7:14 pm EST

Great video, great song, and Ill be at the Sam Boyd show this October … ACHTUNG VEGAS, BABY!

dfez | 5/10/2009, 1:27 am EST

Magnificent is one of the best U2 songs EVER. And, this video while simple, is effective in evoking the spirituality, colors & textures of one of U2’s best albums to date. NLOTH is up there with The Joshua Tree & Achtung Baby. There are some people who want to see U2 fail because they’ve had so much success for so long, with very little scandal. While U2 certainly enjoy the spoils of success, it isn’t the root essence of why they started a band – and why they continue when all their peers have faltered. Spirituality, family, a belief in themselves, and a belief in the power of music to heal, enlighten, and change the world have been the driving force for these 4 boys from Dublin, Ireland. I feel so blessed that U2 are still around making great music. And, love or loathe them, if they quit tomorrow their music will be around long after you and I are forgotten.

b.unkewl | 5/10/2009, 6:26 pm EST

Song barely chills me like “NLOTH” version b. Like of the “making of” video better (on U2.com)… Will check out live version… Boston version live really good… Standard version highlights disparage between music and digital age – doesn’t connect ‘em.

Bob | 5/11/2009, 1:31 pm EST

Song is great. This video is forgettable. The live performance on Letterman was spine tingling and better than the album version.

RoseParvin | 5/11/2009, 11:56 pm EST

U2 is magnificant themselves and with their spirit of the angel can spiritually know the truth going on underneath the vail and try to bring it out and support it with their songs! Magnificant is one of those that resorects the Angels of the Rose Prophecy!

;( | 5/12/2009, 9:19 am EST

U2 always sounds the same nowadays . dissapointment , the whole new record.

Mike | 5/13/2009, 6:06 pm EST

I don’t get why people have a problem with U2 being so huge and still making relevant music. Is it music snobs who immediately yell “sellout” when a band does well? What the hell is wrong with you?
I’m sure you would have been the same one in the 60’s who wished the Beatles would have packed it in when they became popular in 1964.

vhuskey | 5/15/2009, 3:45 am EST

i love! the new album! i’m still listening to it everyday. these guys are prolific geniuses. i’m glad to see they continue to put out bold, fresh sounds. finally, lately a record worth listening to. thinking u2 should have remained the band that produced JT, is like wishing george washington should still be president, even though he’s dead. people like to accuse them of selling out, and whatever garbage they try to say, but they’re claims are untrue, and u2 are better than thier critics.

Andy | 5/19/2009, 3:11 pm EST

What makes U2 tick are their live shows. A lot of the previous albums have only survived due to what the live performances gave them.U2 are not a sell out. Who writes 5 min songs and expects them to play on radio? THis album feels short to me. A lot of songs that have been formed into something that works rather than naturally. but I still listen to it most days. Where as other music plays and than disappears this will stay on rotation til the next one, and thats U2
